etting from one side of Boise State to another isn’t as straightforward as it used to be.

Construction projects across campus have rerouted walkways, closed familiar paths and forced students to rethink how they move around campus.

For freshman Owen Christensen, construction makes navigating through the university more difficult while he is still learning his way around campus.

“The main thing for me is that it’s tricky trying to learn all of this with the construction,” Christensen said. “I’m learning the detours before I even know the traditional way I would get around campus.”

As previously reported by The Arbiter, Boise State received $90 million from the state in fiscal years 2023 and 2024 for more than 50 deferred-maintenance projects including roofs, boilers, HVAC and electrical systems, fire alarms, elevators and underground utility tunnels.

“That money comes from the state, and we have a set amount of time to spend it,” said Brittany Austin, the deputy director of Architectural and Engineering Services.

Although projects may appear to be happening all at once, Austin says that Boise State’s funding for the construction has been phased over three years and must be spent by the end of next fall.

“We’re under a crunch of a deadline to do that,” Austin said.

The Capital Renewal Program is only one piece of the construction happening across campus. Projects range from infrastructure repairs in the Quad and Education Building to work affecting the Greenbelt, parking areas and Student Union.

The work also comes as Boise State prepares for future campus growth. The university’s 10-year Campus Master Plan, approved in April, anticipates Boise State’s

student population will grow 9% to about 21,900 by 2034. The growth is expected to increase demand for housing, parking and academic space.

One of the most visible projects is the steam tunnel refurbishment throughout the Quad, where crews are replacing the network of pipes that provide steam and chilled water to campus buildings. Drew Alexander, vice president of campus operations, previously told The Arbiter that the three-phase project is currently in phase two and expected to be completed in November 2027. However, the current phase of the project is the most disruptive.

Fencing currently blocks some of the direct walkways between the Albertsons Library and the Mathematics building, requiring students to walk around portions of the Quad.

The changing routes can become especially difficult when students have limited time to get to and from classes.

“You’ve got 15 minutes to make it to class, so you learn, ‘I go through the SUB and take this specific trail to get there,’”said freshman Dylan Delacy. “With the construction, you can’t consistently have those same routes.”

Delacy experienced that firsthand when construction near the library forced him to take a detour that added about 10 minutes to his walk to class.

“Construction is inherently disruptive, and so we try to minimize that as much as possible,” Austin said.

Boise State schedules disruptive work during the summer and off-hours when possible and asks contractors to limit noisy work during dead week and finals. The length of current projects, however, makes some construction during the semester unavoidable.

The current phase of Quad construction is expected to wrap up in late fall, with portions of the existing fence coming down before fencing for phase three is installed.

Construction also affected commuters with the replacing and widening of the Greenbelt between Theatre Lane and Broadway Bridge. Phased repaving in the West Stadium lot and along Bronco Lane is also scheduled to continue through Sept. 11.

Other projects are taking place inside campus buildings. In April, Boise State announced a sponsorship agreement with WestMark Credit Union worth more than $8.5 million over 10 years, with part of the funding going towards improvements in the Student Union and student programs.

All three elevators in the Education Building are also being repaired and refurbished. Crews are taking them offline one at a time, which can lead to longer wait times while fewer elevators are available.

Austin said Boise State uses its interactive campus map and a current projects hub to communicate closures and construction timelines. Students who have specific construction questions are recommended to contact Architectural and Engineering Services directly.

Despite temporary interruptions, The Capital Renewal Program’s purpose is to extend the life of Boise State’s existing infrastructure and ensure campus facilities continue functioning for future students.

“What needs the most help, and how do we make sure it’s here for generations to come?” said Austin.

Austin acknowledges the steam tunnel project may feel like a never-ending process that students experience every day, but described the construction as a commitment to campus longevity.

“It is a once-in-a-generation replacement… an investment into the school,” Austin said.

or the second time in 20 years, the roadway running between the university and the Boise River Greenbelt is getting a new name.

West Cesar Chavez Lane will soon become Friendship Lane, following a unanimous Boise City Council vote on the name proposal in early September. The name references the nearby Friendship Bridge connecting the university to downtown Boise.

The change comes after a New York Times investigation reported allegations of sexual misconduct against labor leader and activist Cesar Chavez, including allegations of abuse involving two underage girls.

One week after the investigation was published, Boise State said the reporting raised “serious allegations” against Chavez.

The university said it was “committed to gathering campus feedback before making any determination on a name change,” according to an email release to the campus community.

This would not be the first time controversy changed the name of the road. Nearly two decades ago, campus activism helped put Chavez’s name there in the first place.

In 2004, Boise State entered a 15-year, $4 million agreement with Taco Bell to rename the arena now known as ExtraMile Arena after the fast-food franchise.

The decision came during a national boycott over wage and labor standards for farmworkers in Taco Bell’s supply chain.

Student groups and faculty members criticized the agreement and pressured the university’s then-president, Bob Kustra, to consider backing out of the deal.

“I wouldn’t doubt that the Cesar Chavez naming was one way to deal with issues of the Taco Bell Arena,” Kustra said in a 2022 interview with The Arbiter.

Twenty years later, the university turned to the campus community to ask what the road should be called, but this time, the name favored by students, faculty and staff did not make the final cut.

A campus survey showed broad support for a name change. Of the nearly 2,500 respondents, 89% of faculty, 80% of staff and 72% of students either agreed or strongly agreed the roadway should be renamed, according to public records reviewed by The Arbiter.

Of the 10 names initially suggested by the university, faculty and staff preferred Huerta Lane, honoring United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta. Students favored Huckleberry Lane.

Other names on the list included Morrison Lane, a reference to Velma Morrison, the woman the Morrison Center is named after, Centennial Lane, Innovation Lane and Front Porch Lane.

Former Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty was the most frequently suggested write-in, appearing 73 times. Renowned

Bronco quarterback, Kellen Moore, was suggested 34 times, Buster appeared 22 times and Farmworkers received 21 mentions. Other respondents drew inspiration from the roadway’s location, with 40 writeins referencing the river and seven naming the Greenbelt.

Despite these results, the university moved forward with presenting Friendship, Peregrine and Campus Lane as its three final options. Friendship Lane was not among the 10 names initially presented in the survey and appeared only seven times as a write-in. Campus Lane and Peregrine Lane ranked middle of the pack across all groups.

When Boise State’s naming committee narrowed the options, it developed criteria favoring general names over those associ-

ated with individuals, leaving neither person-specific name on the final list.

A range of factors were considered in the naming process including the roadway’s purpose, its location and context and how to best reflect Boise State’s community, Stephany Galbreaith, university spokesperson said in an email to The Arbiter.

“As the process continued, the committee determined that a name not associated with an individual would best align with its goals for the roadway,” Galbreaith said.

“That consideration was applied when the committee evaluated the names following the campus survey.”

The university has not yet announced when the signage will change, but Cesar Chavez Lane will soon give way to Friendship Lane, marking the roadway’s third name in two decades.

or nearly two weeks this summer, Boise’s familiar blue skies were difficult to find.

A thick layer of wildfire smoke settled over the Treasure Valley in late July, hiding the foothills, reducing visibility and repeatedly pushing air quality into unhealthy territory.

“We had about a two-week period where the smoke was so thick you could smell it, almost taste it,” KTVB Chief Meteorologist Rachel Garceau said in an interview with The Arbiter. “[From] recent memory, this summer and the summer of 2024 were probably the worst.”

Although Boise State’s skyline returned to clearer skies just in time for the fall semester, the conditions behind this summer’s smoke have not completely disappeared.

Boise did not record a single day in the red, or unhealthy, air quality category in 2025, according to Garceau. In 2024, Boise spent 31 days in the unhealthy category and four days with very unhealthy air.

The start of fall does not guarantee Boise has seen its last smoke of 2026. The U.S. Wildland Fire Service told The Arbiter Idaho’s wildfire season now lasts more than a month longer than it did in previous years.

Breidenbach said another stretch of dry weather could quickly change conditions.

“We’re not out of the woods yet,” Breidenbach said. “If we hit a stretch of dry weather, say in the second half of September, we could certainly see more wildfires, and fire produces smoke.”

Clearer skies offer students a welcome break from a summer marked by haze, but this summer demonstrated how the fires producing Boise’s next plume of smoke does not have to be anywhere near the Treasure Valley.

For four decades, few symbols have been as closely tied to Boise State’s identity and national prominence as The Blue. Albertsons Stadium’s recently-installed turf represents more than merely the seventh iteration of the iconic field since its inception in 1986.

The new field arrives in a year that carries particular weight in Boise State history.

Alongside Boise State’s inaugural year in the Pac-12 and major athletic facility upgrades, 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of The Blue, a milestone the school plans to celebrate at its football home opener on Sept. 12.

A centerpiece of the celebration will come with the help of renowned artist Armando Villarreal, who hand-painted a special edition helmet commemorating 40 years of The Blue that will be worn against Memphis in the home opener.

For Villareal, the project symbolizes more than just artwork.

“Once you get to know the people and the program, to get to help tell their story, it’s just unbelievable,” Villarreal said. “It’s so much fun and so rewarding to get to tell a story that means so much to so many different people. As an artist, that’s a dream come true for your art to mean something to somebody.”

Villarreal began painting motorcycles full-time in 2010. He eventually transitioned into sports art and airbrushed his first football helmet for Mississippi State in 2018.

After painting a helmet for Illinois in 2024, he was contacted by Boise State Assistant Athletic Director of Merchandising and Brand Operations Matthew Sterling, who invited him to create a helmet for the Broncos. The result was last year’s Front Porch of Idaho helmet.

While touring the stadium before the helmets were unveiled, Sterling half-jokingly floated the idea of designing a helmet to resemble the turf in celebration of The Blue’s 40th anniversary in 2026. Sterling recalls that Villarreal looked at him as if to say, “You’re crazy.”

From there, the initial blueprint for the helmet was born. Villarreal, Sterling and

the rest of the athletic department began collaborating on various designs and features that would go into the final product.

“It came out better than expected,” Sterling said. “It was amazing. A lot of hands went into bringing my sarcastic comment to reality on the field.”

The backdrop of the helmet’s design represents the blue turf itself, with Boise State’s retro logo, used on the very first version of the field, on one side of the helmet, and a 40-yard-line marker on the other side to represent the 40th Anniversary.

The back bumper of the helmet reads, “Est. 1986,” with the front bumper reading, “The Blue.”

Even the smallest details carry history: the 40-yard-line marker uses the same numerical font featured on the original 1986 field..

“One thing [that’s] fun working with Boise, is they like to tell a story with everything, and everything we put on [the helmet] has a reason as to why,” Villarreal said. “I love the helmet, I thought it turned out awesome.”

Similar to last year’s Front Porch of Idaho helmets, the game-worn helmets will be auctioned off after the game, giving fans an opportunity to own a piece of Boise State history.

Part of that history is the evolution of The Blue, which has gone through numerous changes since its inception.

In 1986, Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier had the ambitious idea to switch from the traditional green turf that the stadium had since 1970 to an all-blue field, the first non-green football field in the country.

The Blue made its debut on Sept. 13 of that year in a 74-0 Boise State victory over Humboldt State.

What initially looked like a gimmick quickly grew into a defining part of the program and its history.

When it came time for a new field in 1995, the athletic department stuck with

the blue, and the anomaly gained more national attention during Boise State’s subsequent transition into the Big West Conference, which included a 1999 bowlgame win over Louisville on The Blue on national television.

The third Blue arrived before the 2002 season, with the school deciding to switch from AstroTurf to AstroPlay, a synthetic surface designed to feel more like real grass.

The field also included a new Bronco logo.

This version of the field saw the most important stretch in the program’s history, with the team capturing five straight conference titles and an undefeated 2006 season that culminated in the legendary Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma.

A new field was installed in 2008, and The Blue became Boise State’s nationally recognized backdrop during the Kellen Moore/Chris Petersen era.

The fifth version came in 2010, and by 2011, the university had even obtained a federal trademark for the color blue as applied to artificial turf.

The sixth Blue was installed in 2019 and carried the Broncos through another major era that included the program’s first College Football Playoff appearance in 2024.

Now, 40 years after Bleymaier’s gamble, the seventh Blue enters a new chapter in the Pac-12, bringing four decades of tradition with it. That history will take the field in a new form this Saturday, when the 40th Anniversary helmets make their debut.

“We’re cutting edge, we’re different,” head football coach Spencer Danielson said when asked about the 40th Anniversary helmets. “So much is encapsulated in that helmet, and we talk about it as a team, that, ‘[The Blue] is home and you protect what matters most to you.’ There’s not a lot of teams that are doing that or have the forward thinking to do it and that’s hats off to our administration.”

he Student Union is welcoming back an essential campus resource in the Student Connection and Support Center: the Campus Clothing Closet.

The grand reopening showcased pieces from the closet on student models during a fashion show, providing attendees a sneak peek as to what the renovated space has to offer.

“I think the big thing about student retention and success is, first off, they feel more confident when they pick out an outfit that really is them,” said Campus Clothing Closet Coordinator Leslie Kennemer.

“As we could see in the models you could see their personality in it, and it gave them swagger when they walk out because they picked out that outfit.”

Noemi Tapia, a regular at the closet and one of the models, explained the themes helped them choose their outfits for the fashion show and gave them the opportunity to be seen in a positive light.

“It was really fun that they let us have full creative output,” Tapia said. “I feel like

it just made everybody feel like they had something.”

Renovations replaced the old closet with a new atmosphere and experience for students who visit. Shade Hines, another model, said that nothing from the old closet remained. The renovated space features a new aesthetic, with mounted racks replacing mobile racks, a masculine cut section, a vinyl on the wall, mood lighting and speakers have entered the closet.

“This is a thrifting, cool shopping experience, is what I want the vibe,” Kennemer said. “If you look in the closet, we have quotes that say ‘Wear the outfit, you are the occasion.’”

Kennemer’s goal for the closet goes beyond just finding clothes, building students’ confidence and success plays a more significant role in the closet.

“Feeling good about their clothes, I think, will help them with job interviews, with internships, with going out and meeting new people,” Kennemer said.

Hines said the closet aims to support students throughout their college journey.

“So our goal is to create an area where students can express themselves, how they feel comfortable, by having that closet resource available, as well as others, and being open to how you see that fit into your student life,” Hines said.

Donations for the closet come from professors, alumni, campus visitors and community members. The closet is also highly accessible. Students can book an appointment or drop in and receive up to 10 free items per semester.

“So I think it gives students that confidence, and then not having to worry about money and budget,” Kennemer said.

The closet gives students an opportunity for self-expression by finding styles in a private space. However, if you need help,

students can also turn to staff in the center for advice and styling ideas.

“I feel like outfits are part of our everyday, and learning how to build a presentable outfit where you can walk into an office space and feel comfortable, go to more formal events, and have that impact of looking more striking, bold, sleek, niche, whatever you’re going through for your outfit in the closet something can help kind of cultivate that,” Hines said.

The closet currently sees four to five appointments per day; Kennemer hopes the numbers increase to 10 to 15.

“I hope in the future my goal is for it to be used like the [Campus Food] pantry, and that everyone feels comfortable, and is not ashamed to come out,” Kennemer said.

Boise State’s defense, headed by Travis Anderson’s career-high 11 tackles, held strong, shutting out the electric Oregon offense for the entire first quarter.

It wasn’t until the second that the Ducks tied the game at seven after punching in a touchdown to cap off a 50-yard drive.

Shortly after, a quick three-and-out forced the Broncos to punt, and a muff at Oregon’s 38-yard line allowed Arthur de

“[Dante Moore] is a great quarterback,” Phelps said. “We [the defense] knew it was going to be a competition, and he went out there and operated and we gotta do better as a defense, for sure.”

Madsen and the offense responded swiftly with an 8-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a crucial fourth-down diving catch in the endzone by tight end Matt Wagner for the score, tying the game at 24 after the extra point.

Both teams traded field goals to open the final frame, but a 62-yard touchdown reception from Oregon receiver Dakorien Moore gave the Ducks a 34-27 lead with 7:51 remaining.

A pivotal third-down sack from Boise State’s Bol Bol gave Madsen and the

offense a chance to tie the game, but the Broncos couldn’t take advantage and the Ducks eventually ran out the clock, sealing their 34-27 victory.

“When you put your all into something and you go ‘all chips on the table’ and you come up short, it hurts,” head coach Spencer Danielson said. “We’re not gonna make any excuses. We’ve gotta find a way to get better.”

The Broncos turn their attention to Memphis, who will travel to Albertsons Stadium for Boise State’s home opener on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The performance earned him FCS Punter of the Year Semifinalist and Big Sky Academic All-Conference honors. His 44.4yard average per punt landed him 4th in program history before entering the transfer portal in April 2025.

Within nine days, Doyle made his decision to become a Bronco, where he developed a new level of gratitude for Bronco Nation.

“Not only am I chasing the goal of getting it inside the 10 and inside the 20, but I’m also doing it for the [children] too,” Doyle said. “I’m just forever grateful for this place, and I can’t wait to give back to the community because they’ve given me so much.”

As the season begins, Doyle gives the Broncos a reason to cheer as the punt team takes the field. Every kick within the 20 is a small victory for the team and a bigger win for the children at St. Luke’s.
