Space news is just as important as Donald Trump Justin Kirkham Editor-in-Chief

When signs of water were discovered on Mars this past week, very few news feeds flooded with the breaking research. Instead, we faced more Donald Trump coverage and articles on every new guest appearance at Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour.

These sorts of findings and new research are important both to our local community and our national interests, as you can read in Patty Bowen’s opinion piece on page 9. It’s a shame this sort of news cover-

age isn’t perceived as important as other stories within each of our individualized news diets.

Instead of focusing on stories that could potentially instigate change in the future, we gravitate to sensationalized conflict articles. And, while political and entertainment coverage can be good in their own right, it is also important that we focus on other topics that don’t necessarily scream click bait or celebrity gossip.

When approaching this week’s issue, we decided this recent space news was well worth our coverage. And, in an effort to reflect its importance as it spreads to different facets

within a student’s life, we tried to find several different stories about space research and local events that could pertain to the overarching topic of space.

And now, we’ve created The Arbiter’s space issue.

This year we haven’t selected specific run dates for special issues. Instead, we’ve chosen to allow them to organically surface in a way as certain news topics become more prevalent and pertinent for our student audience.

That being said, please let us know what topics are most important to you, as a campus news consumer.

ics like a Halloween issue or a winter holiday issue are going to come to fruition. However, with more specialized and timely topics like space, it is important for us to keep our finger on the pulse of campus.

Biometrics are becoming a staple in everyday life News Editor

A few years ago, using a fingerprint scanner would appear solely in a science fiction film, but this technology is now so common it serves as a form of security in the pockets of millions of Americans.

This technology brings a new level of convenience when accessing smartphones, but according to Greg Hampikian, professor of biology and criminal justice at Boise State, this security measure might also bring a new threat.

“There’s really no difference between security and threat. Anything that’s used as security can be exploited as a threat,” Hampikian said. “The moment you disclose something it’s open to be stolen.

Any type of information stored can be stolen.”

The United States government is already dealing with these issues as a result of a security breach this summer.

21.5 million people had sensitive information, like their Social Security number, stolen in a security breach at the United States Office of Personnel Management. Of those affected by the breach, 1.1 million had their fingerprints stolen. But a recent investigation showed this number is now closer to 5.6 million.

The concern with these technologies is, unlike a password, one cannot change their fingerprints.

mised for life.

Hampikian said, once someone has a person’s fingerprints, they would be able to falsify the presence of that individual.

This could mean accessing a cellphone, stealing an identity or even planting fingerprints at a crime scene.

Despite these concerns about biometrics, Hampikian is still more concerned about Social Security Numbers and other forms of identification. Part of the reason is fingerprints are hard to transfer from one subject to another.

“I’m not so worried about the fingerprint database because we haven’t seen a lot of crimes with fake fingerprint transfer, though it’s possible. It’s just not a common route for criminals,” Hampikian said.

Two of the leading providers of mobile phones, Apple and Samsung, seem to have taken into account their user’s privacy and security before introducing this technology.

Both companies have stated the information from the fingerprint scanner does not leave the device or store complete fingerprints.

According to Apple’s privacy page, “Touch ID doesn’t store any images of your fingerprint. It stores only a mathematical representation of your fingerprint. It isn’t possible for someone to reverse engineer your actual fingerprint image from this

Richard Hickman, lead computer-examiner and forensics expert at Decipher Forensics, said while these measures increase security, they are not a failsafe.

“My opinion is biometrics by itself is not a secure way to store or protect data,” Hickman said.

“Two-factor is the better way to go when it comes to wanting to be more secure.”

Two-factor is a form of security, requiring two forms of identification rather than just one.

Fingerprint scanners are common tech tools.

“There are three ways to prove who you are: something you have, something you are and something you know. Two-factor involves two of those rather than just one,” Hickman said.

“The problem with that is it’s a pain in the butt. It’s not very convenient, but, it’s a better way to secure your data.”

Hickman and Hampikian believe fingerprints are just the start of biometrics as a form of security and the industry will move away from just using fingerprints.

“I don’t really ever see technology as positive or

negative on its face.

It’s all about how it’s used,” Hampikian said. “Is it bad that we use fingerprints to open our phones? No, I use it. I think it’s great. It’s very efficient. Of course, it can be hacked.”

According to Hampikian, this is just the beginning of biometrics. There are a lot of characteristics that can be used as biometrics which have not been explored yet, including smell, cells, hair count and even DNA. “The future always comes, whether we think about it or not,” Hampikian said.

The future according to Hampikian is going to be marked by an even greater amount of information and understanding.

“We’re getting to the point of omniscience.

We’ve had thousands of years to prepare because we’ve been told there’s a god, there is a Santa Clause or there is someone who knows when you’re sleeping, who knows when you’re awake,” Hampikian said. “The fact is, Santa’s real now. Santa does know when you’ve been naughty or nice. There is omniscience to a very high level of practicallity.”

“I think the importance of those lectures is a different perspective on a common topic,” said Gloria Luciano, sophomore health professions major.

“Not a lot of people touch base on real ideas; everyone’s focusing on getting good grades or reading their textbook.”

“One of the things students tend not to realize is how rare the opportunity is to see and hear these people,” Frenz said.

“Universities are the only places that do these kinds of things and bring these kinds of people to a public venue where you can actually access them.”

These lectures are followed with a question and answer segment, which allows students and the Boise community to interact with people who are working on major issues in the world.

“If it’s related to your major, you might find some useful information about finding a job in that career In a press release concerning the study Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix said, or what you need to do to prepare yourself for a job,” said Kyle Golen, freshman computer science major. “If it’s not in your field of study, it might just be good to go to find new information and build your character.”

Boise State University hosted a lecture titled “Women in Professional and Public Life: Challenge, Adversity and Triumph” on Monday, Oct. 5,

by Julia Gillard, former Prime Minister of Australia.

This lecture was part of a series of lectures referred to as the Distinguished Lecture Series, in which prominent figures are invited to campus to lecture and discuss the topics in which they are considered experts, ranging from politics and academics to humanitarian activism.

“Talking to the head of a state is always interesting because of the sheer balance they have to run between practicality and idealism,” said Annal Frenz, associate director of the Honors College. “But she adds this extra element of gender issues that’s really interesting.”

Julia Gillard was the 27th Prime Minister of Australia and the first woman to ever hold that title. Having previously served as minister for education, employment and workplace relations, and social inclusion, Gillard now also acts as a public speaker, addressing social and political topics.

“Because it’s the distinguished lecture series, you need to really have shown yourself to be at the very top level of the field you work in,”

said Frenz. “As with Julia Gillard, we bring in former heads of state. You can’t get much higher in politics.”

Before the Honors College took over the Distinguished Lecture Series in 2010, the Office of the President was in charge of running the lecture series.

Speakers are selected a year in advance through speakers’ bureaus by a committee made up of members from the different colleges on campus.

According to Frenz, the committee gets together once a year to discuss potential candidates for the speaking position and they come up with a slate of people who are voted on.

Upon narrowing down the list to the top three choices, the list is sent to President Kustra, who offers his opinion on which people to attempt to connect with.

“The Office of the President supplies the funding for the Distinguished Lecture Series, so they have a say in who comes,” Frenz said. “I have to say he’s actually pretty good at picking people.”

This spring’s lecture will be given by Steven Weinberg, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who has also done a lot of work in STEM education.

Boise community works to rebuild after market fire Managing Editor

On Sept. 6, the Boise International Market— an indoor market built to showcase businesses and cultures from around the globe—burned down after an accidental trashcan fire in the kitchen.

This travesty seems miles away as families and community members gather around food trucks and several foreign clothing stands.

The crowd ebbs and flows to the deep and melodic voices of the musicians on stage at Fourth Friday on the Bench, a charity event to raise money for the business owners who lost their businesses in the fire.

“Everybody was very gratified and happy when the market was alive,” said co-founder of the Boise International Market Miguel Gaddi. “The market highlighted all this diversity and got us exposed to different languages, cultures and music. All that got amplified after the fire. People in the community really rallied behind the project, idea and business owners.”

The fire caused several classes, including graphic design assistant professor Brian Wiley’s course to move their instruction elsewhere.

According to Gaddi, there are no current concrete plans for rebuilding the market, although he and Boise International Market co-founder Lori Porreca are talking with several organizations around the community to see if finding funding will be possible.

In addition to the $1,800 raised at Fourth Friday, a gofundme page created after the fire brought in $50,000, which was split 14 ways for each of the vendors.

“That money covers expenses,” said co-owner of Joyful, Terry Hathaway.

“None of us are able to make money at this time, and some of us are trying to move on, so it certainly helps.”

According to Hathaway, the money allocated to the 14 International Market vendors was barely enough to stay afloat financially, let alone fund a new business. Hathaway explained the majority of the venders were refugees who had families to support and rent to pay.

That being said, Gaddi believes vendors will be able to figure it out through creative means. He stressed the importance of communicating the need for support in building a new market.

“Some of the business owners are going to be doing pop ups and different events. Some of them will be setting up in different places,” Gaddi said. “The idea is to express to the city, companies and corporations that this is an important thing for Boise and it’s okay to put community resources behind it.”

Community volunteer Lynn Hyneman worked with refugees for the last decade and believes, without the market, it will be much harder to create the same community connection to foreign food and culture.

Hyneman explained there are several other refugee run stores around Boise, but both the shop owners and the local shoppers feel a disconnect.

“The individual stores are a little intimidating,” Hyneman said. “A lot of people are afraid to just walk in and go there, but when it was like it was here, this open thing, they’re a little more apt to walk around and try the food.”

Currently there aren’t any planned events involving the vendors of the Boise International Market. Porruca explained in an email that the market doesn’t currently have the resources to put on any more events.

“We lost an anchor in the community,” Hathaway said. “There were a couple of people in the neighborhood who might come there for lunch or dinner or tea and coffee, but the general community of boise lost a wonderful experience in international merchandise that wasn’t here before.”

Netflix users face process addiction, compulsion Patrick Adcock News Editor

The statement “I ended up watching Netflix” is one students hear all too often.

They joke about their “addiction” to the world’s most popular streaming service.

However, Susan Esp, associate professor in the Department of Community and Environmental Health, said she is not yet convinced of any sort of true addiction to Netflix.

The American Psychological Association only recognizes two forms of addictions: alcohol use dis-

orders and gambling disorders, both of which are verified through research.

According to Esp, if there were a type of addiction Netflix would fall under, it would be a process addiction—an addiction to a certain behavior.

“I would be very slow to use the term ‘addiction’. I would feel comfortable using the word ‘compulsion’,” Esp said. “I think addiction and compulsion are not the same thing. Addiction is a serious issue that interferes in your life. Compulsion, yes. I think those shows know how to hook you in.”

A recent study by Netflix showed just how effective the company is at “hooking” viewers. The study identified episodes of popular shows that kept viewers watching.

These “hooking” episodes had a 70 percent chance to keep the viewer watching the rest of the season or more.

“In our research of more than 20 shows across 16 markets, we found that no one was ever hooked on the pilot. This gives us confidence that giving our members all episodes at once is more aligned with how fans

are made,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix, in a press release concerning the study.

The process of getting people “hooked” doesn’t take long either. Supposedly, some shows only require two episodes before viewers watch them to completion.

Esp said the criteria a potential behavioral addiction like Netflix includes the activity becoming important to a person’s life, modifying their mood— providing excitement, calm or numbness—if they develop a tolerance to the

activity, if they experience withdrawal symptoms, if it brings up conflict with others or interferes with other activities, or if they return to the behavior after giving it up.

“The key is interfering in life,” Esp asked. “To me, it’s more of a compulsion.

Addiction is a philological disorder; a compulsion and a desire and a want are different than an addiction.”

While there is still no concrete evidence as to whether or not there can be an actual addiction to Netflix or media in general, there is some research be-

ing done on the subject.

A study that was published in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions in 2013, titled “Hidden addiction: Television,” gives some insight to the negative consequences binge watching can have on individuals.

The study showed media could have a negative impact on health, body image, social relationships, academic achievement and even life satisfaction.

However the study concludes, “much research is needed to better understand this addiction.”

Space research is worthwhile locally, nationally Managing Editor

The confirmation of liquid water on the surface of Mars

by NASA just days before “The Martian (2015)” premiered put Boise State—and hopefully everyone with a love of discovery and the stars—into an excited frenzy about what the future holds for astrobiological and cosmological studies.

Despite discoveries like liquid water on Mars seeming far removed from our everyday lives—like 54.6 million kilometers far removed—research discoveries impacting the work and long term goals of NASA are being made in Idaho and on our campus.

This research boosts the economy, adds to our commercial lives and makes the possibility of trips to other planets like Mars possible.

It is important Boise State and our community does what it can to not only individually support the research being done in Idaho and at Boise State, but push for more funding to be put behind these fields.

“We’re in an age of exploration in our solar system and beyond,” said Steve Swanson, retired NASA astronaut and distinguished lecturer at Boise State. “It is part of human nature to explore, and we love doing that as a society and as a being. NASA fulfills that for everybody. They can follow along and be part of it.”

The exploration and discovery NASA is doing is not only really cool, but it is fueling our minds and imaginations. The number of movies,

videogames, books and television series based on space travel and exploration is innumerable.

Basically, the more NASA discovers, the better understanding we can have of the science making our science fiction more realistic and more enjoyable—think “The Martian (2015)” 2.0.

This boom in material for science fiction ideas not only inflates the entertainment industry, but also creates growth in the national economy.

“Let’s say someone does research for NASA and then develops a new capability here in Idaho. Now they’re building expertise that will attract more research to Idaho,” said Susie Johnson.

“Then that infostructure draws more research dollars in and maybe creates a spinoff.”

Johnson is program manager of NASA Idaho’s Space Grant Consortium, a branch of Nasa that allocated grants and scholarships in Idaho to organizations, professors and students who are investing their time in space research.

Johnson said these spinoffs can later become businesses, which provide even more jobs for the economy.

According to Swanson, everything taxpayers pay into NASA is paid back into the economy full force.

“For every dollar spent on NASA you get four going back into the US government through taxes,” Swanson said.

Pushing for more tax dollars and donations would only provide a stronger economy for the rest of American industry.

In addition, research done

by NASA generally isn’t used solely for space travel. Johnson often tells researchers to consider the commercial application of the research they are doing.

“What most people don’t realize is things in our everyday lives were created out of research for NASA missions,” Johnson said. “All these things came out of trying to create solutions for our explorations and for our missions. What people don’t see is research can have a benefit if people are thinking in the right way.”

She stated even if something doesn’t have a place in the commercial market when it is first developed, it might boom into popularity in ten years.

Our phone’s cameras and our memory cards are both examples of technology was originally developed by NASA and then commercialized.

Even though commercializing research is popular and much appreciated by those of us in the lowly liberal arts, Johnson stated that we need dedicated researchers who will make those ideas and endeavors possible.

“In 15 years, we are seriously going to be looking at a mission to Mars,” Johnson said. “If we don’t have a quadrant of workers that have a passion for that and love coming to their jobs every day, you’re not going to have the people to work on those missions.”

Despite this probably seeming rather unrelated to those of us who chose to STEM into other nonengineering related majors, research that will affect the

first trips to Mars is happening right now at Boise State through human performance studies.

“It’s going to take seven to nine months to make a full trip to Mars and the toll on the human body is crazy,” Johnson said. “You have a

couple of researchers at Boise State studying human performance related issues.”

This research that is pertinant to the survival of astronauts in deep space on the way to Mars illustrates why students should be aware of the local programs that are

making an impact on our knowledge of the universe.

Going to see “The Martian (2015)” is one thing.

Helping make a real world trip to Mars happen through support of local and state research is another—way cooler—thing.

Theatre Arts Department puts Patty Bowen Managing Editor

The theatre goes pitch black just long enough for the audience to catch their breath. A single buttercolored street lamp illuminates the stage. A man shivers in a winter coat.

The backdrop lights up, showing a parking lot and the familiar skyline of Boise’s mountain surroundings.

This is the beginning of the Theatre Arts Department’s new production “A Bright New Boise.” This 2011 dark comedy takes place in modern day Boise and follows the story of several characters who work at a Hobby Lobby.

Throughout the play, each character tries to understand the deeper callings in their life while simultaneously drowning in the uncertainty of the future. “(‘A Bright New Boise’) deals with a crisis that I feel I am going through as a student, which is not knowing what you are going to do and not knowing what really matters in life and in the world in general,” said Amanda Baschnagel, director of “A Bright New Boise”. “This play tries to tackle that and seek out that answer.”

According to Baschnagel, “A Bright New Boise” also connects with its audience because it illustrates the modern ideologies people get stuck

in throughout their lives and how the inability to let go of one’s beliefs hinders their connections with other people.

“This is a play that speaks to our culture right now,” Baschnagel said. “Thematically, these characters just don’t understand that people are worth more than ideologies. You want (the characters) to make that connection with the other person and to say, ‘fuck it’ to what they and the other person think to make that human connection.”

Assistant techniqual director and actor who plays Will in “A Bright New Boise”, Nate Pohl, felt each character has a singular driving force they let take over their lives.

“Focusing so completely on something in their lives left (the characters) unbalanced,” Pohl said. “You look at these characters and none of them are particularly well-grounded in life. None of them are well rounded individuals.”

Pohl felt his character, Will, was fighting with their self-righteousness, arrogance and desire to redeem himself, only to consistently fail and watch “everything they touch turn to shit.”

“In a lot of ways, this show mimics the classic greek tragedy in terms of having these characters who come into the show, who are noble in their own way, but no matter what, they do they can’t manage

to overcome (their flaws),” Pohl said. “It chases them all the way through the show, often times to their death, or the death of some sort of hope or something.”

Use of noise in “A Bright New Boise”

According to sound director and junior theatre arts major Samantha Lancaster, there is a never a time during “A Bright New Boise” where background sound isn’t playing. Lancaster explained that unlike most shows that use transition or mood music, the only sounds in “A Bright New Boise” are realistic, like the break room TV playing or Hobby Lobby product information blaring from the store speakers.

“All the effects and sounds are an attempt to bring in this real-world element to all these characters,” Lancaster said.

“They all have this sense of the world that is so closed.”

Lancaster translated “A Bright New Boise’s” location being set in a Hobby Lobby as a metaphor for the over-corporatization of our lives in modern capitalist society. Because of that, Lancaster explained this overuse of sound shows how the characters are “bombarded by Hobby Lobby” and are never able to get away from it even in their break room where the majority of the play takes place. “(The break room) should be where they are

According to Pohl, the consistent use of noise creates pressure and an atmosphere within “A Bright New Boise.” “(The noise) plays in much like the TV sort of plays the eye of God always watching you,” Pohl said. “It’s this noise that is always pushing on the characters, propelling them forward. It lends a sense of urgency to the action on stage.”

Despite “A Bright New Boise” being set in Boise, Baschnagel said the real connection she felt to the play was through the playwright, Samuel D. Hunter, who was born and raised in Idaho.

“The play itself is a very fictionalized version of Boise that doesn’t seem to live in any reality we know,” Baschnagel said.

“We don’t feel like we’re representing Boise here.

We feel like we’re representing this small part of the world.”

cause the audience didn’t have an understanding of some of the locational references made in the play.

“There’s a lot of Boise name dropping of streets and places,” Pufall said. “It kind of puts a little bit of paradox of place because you’re actually sitting in the place that they’re talking about. They talk about Meridian and Caldwell, so it will be interesting to see how people respond in Boise.”

Costuming in “A Bright New Boise”

While costuming the play, Pufall made sure to keep the Boise location and Boise fashion in mind.

“These are not high fashion people,” Pufall said.

“These are average people with minimum wage jobs.

It’s really important to consider that.”

According to Pufall, costuming for “A Bright New Boise” was easier than other period pieces, like “Little Women,” that he’s been a part of because of its contemporary status.

Instead of doing specific research on the period, he was able to observe real people who he thought were similar to the characters and pull ideas from their wardrobes.

“You’re trying to illuminate the two dimensional character from the page in conjunction with an actor, always, whether it’s set in 1712 or 2012,” Pufall said.

“It is important you’re always understanding what

the character is feeling at that moment and what they’re feeling when they woke up and got dressed.”

In this way, Pufall felt he was able to focus more on making the costumes “speak to the characters.”

“It’s really important to try to understand who these people are,” Pufall said. “For (“A Bright New Boise”), we started with a collage of sorts while researching the individuals. I generally try to work with the actors and get their take on it, because they tend to have more to add to what a character may or may not need.”

Pufall did encounter a challenge with trying to create flexibility in character’s costumes because of “A Bright New Boise’s” need for quick costume changes.

“Knowing a character has to walk off stage and then walk on in the next 30 seconds showing it’s a different day requires you to be pretty clever about how you’re making that statement, “ Pufall said.

“A Bright New Boise” will show Oct. 7-10, at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Danny Peterson Theatre in the Morrison Center.

“Theatre is sort of a gathering place of both people and ideas,” Pohl said. “It’s where we can see life dissected in front of us.

It gives a chance to explore all sorts of topics: mortality, personal interactions.”

The wake of last week’s total lunar eclipse and the discovery of evidence for water on Mars has piqued many students’ interest in space.

Fortunately, there are opportunities at Boise State for further development of this interest, one of which is Space Broncos.

Space Broncos is a spaceoriented student organization aimed at providing outreach programs for the community, research projects and connections with NASA. The club lacks the typical hierarchy of a president and vice president and instead implements a group of strong leaders who work together.

Junior mechanical engineering major Camille Eddy, who is part of Space Broncos’ core leadership team, explained the goal of Space Broncos.

“We try to create big social events centered around space to get the whole campus involved and aware of the space things they can do on campus,” Eddy said.

In the past, these events have been huge successes.

Space Broncos works closely with Steve Swanson and Barbara Morgan, both former NASA astronauts and distinguished educators in residence at Boise State.

In 2014, Boise State hosted the Space Symposium. It featured a live Q&A between Space Broncos, Swanson and fellow astronaut Rick Mastracchio while they were at

the International Space Station via downlink.

It was a historic moment for Boise State, and the university has continued to cultivate a relationship with NASA through various events and research projects ever since.

“In the fall, we had Steve Swanson come back here— just returned to earth from the space station—and we had a big event. We were in the Jordan Ballroom. It was packed. There was about 1,000 people there,” Eddy said. “After that, we went on the Blue during a football halftime show and had Steve walk on. He had taken a hat with him into space, so he brought the hat back with him, went on the Blue and presented that to Boise State.”

The club’s intention is to let people know about NASA research going on and ways to get involved with NASA. Space Broncos also connects with other members and groups in the community.

“We’re going to hopefully be working with the Boise Virtual Reality Project,” Eddy said. “They are a virtual reality initiative, and we’re going to try to do an outreach with them.”

Any students who wish to be part of Space Broncos are welcome to join, regardless of if they are majoring in a field related to space. Eddy said the club is eager to use any skills students possess and help them develop those skills to take elsewhere in the future.

the same room, that’s where we come up with these really great ideas and opportunities—not just networking within the club, but also using our network outside of the club. We can pull in some awesome opportunities.”

“The Martian” may come off as another space movie, but five minutes in, the film blows that notion away.

“The Martian” is based on a book by Andy Weir, that was published in 2011 and republished in 2014, about a man stranded on Mars. The story follows American astronaut Mark Watney—played by Matt Damon—and his crew, as they leave Watney for dead on the red planet.

The film relies heavily on the performance of Damon as he takes the majority of the screen time and does so alone.

Damon does an incredible job of creating dialogue through video logs as he performs experiments to

survive on the planet.

This is where “The Martian” truly shines, in Damon’s ability to make these interactions feel authentic.

The screenplay cannot be praised enough in this film. It creates a great pace for the plot to unfold and makes use of the incredible cast.

The cast features Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Pena, Sean Bean and Kate Mara, just to name a few.

“The Martian” is a powerful film that shows off the talent of its renowned cast and crew and allows Damon to give one of the best performances of the year, and of his career.

The film’s realistic tone gives it power over the viewer and may just inspire the next generation to problem-solve its way to the stars.

Filmmakers talk tips and tricks for students Patty Bowen

Light streams into Ming Studio’s wide open space while a group of dedicated Boise residents and cinema buffs sit with anticipation before the long awaited screening of “How to be Cute and Break Hearts” (2014).

This indie film was one of the many films shown during the first year of the annual Boise Film Festival.

After its screening, writer and actor Tommaso Matelli and director Mattia Molini hosted a question and answer session for viewers present after the showing.

During the Q&A, they revealed two keys to success in the film industry­ — experience and finding partners who can assist with a variety of skills.

“Don’t waste any time,” Molini said. “If you have a camera and a script, just do it. Most importantly, find people who you understand.”

Despite attending film school, Molini realized that after college, he still wasn’t as prepared for the real world as he wanted to be.

Both he and Matelli found that the only way to work through this was to just get involved with whatever they possibly could.

“Working for free happens constantly when you’re starting out. Do it, work as much as you can,” Molini said. “We tend to get out of school thinking we know exactly how to do things and we don’t. On a

to be in a working group with someone who knows exactly how to do what you know how to do. It makes no sense in a working crew environment.”

Matelli said this trust factored well into making “How to be Cute and Break Hearts” because Matelli had to trust Molini to do everything after he created the script so Matelli could act in one of the lead roles of the film.

“If I didn’t trust him blindly, I wouldn’t let it go.

It’s my baby scriptwise,” Mattia said. “I wouldn’t hand it off unless I trusted them and knew they can do it better than me. Otherwise, what’s the point? You could just do it yourself.”

Last Sunday, Boise was treated to the rare sight of a lunar eclipse swallowing a large, blood red moon. This “super moon” was a wonderful treat for Boise residents to witness as most astroligical events are obscured by light pollution.

“Unnecessary or improper lighting in towns causes you to be unable to see what’s up there,” said Randy Holst, vice president of the Boise Astronomical Society.

Holst will help with the Oct. 10 Star Party at Bogus Basin hosted by the Boise Astronomical Society and Idaho Camera.

The Star Party will give students the unique opportunity to look through professional telescopes and see Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and several of the constellations.

“For a lot of folks, this is the first time they’re seeing (space) through a telescope and are amazed at what they can see with their own eyes,” Holst said.

“It’s that exploration of the universe that is made available through telescopes provided by the Boise Astronomical Society,” said Ralph Comstock, member of the Bogus Basin board of directors. “They make the whole universe available for people to peer into and discover. That experience is thrilling and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand right up.”

During the Star Party, a telescope will be set up with several filters, allowing attendees to view the sun’s surface as well as the things that project off of the sun. There will also

be opportunities to see star clusters and galaxies, and Idaho Camera will be giving away a Celestron telescope.

“We give people a chance to see (the universe) with their own eyes in person,” Holst said. “They’re not looking through a book or at a computer screen. When they’re looking at the sun, they’re actually seeing sunspots and solar sparks we can show them through a telescope.”

According to Comstock, there will also be a telescope set up by a member of the Boise Astronomical Society that will allow attendees to ask to see specific objects in the night sky.

“He types something into his computer and you’ll hear a “whoosh” as his telescope swings into position,” Comstock said. “Then you’ll put your eye on the telescope and there it is.”

According to Holst, the Boise Astronomical Society throws several Star Parties over the course of the year, but this will be the only one taking place on top of Bogus Basin. Originally, this Star Party was scheduled to take place during July, but was cancelled because of bad weather conditions.

Holst stated if the Star Party is cancelled again due to weather conditions, a sign will be posted at the head of Bogus Basin road. “(The Star Party) is an incredible way to get out of the box,” Comstock said. “The best way to inspire and excite people is to explore the awe that comes from the discoveries exploration provides.”

The Star Party will take place Oct. 10 at Bogus Basin and will start at 7 p.m.

Explore personal politics with Mal Blum

Mal Blum’s music hits with a mix of the soft warmth of a “Charlie Brown Christmas” special while leaving the sentimental sting of finding photos of an ex who broke up with you in the most inconvenient and emotional of times.

Concurrent with the release of “You Look a Lot Like Me” on Oct. 2, Blum began her tour across the United States, which will include a brief stop in Boise.

Although Blum’s music could be described as mellow rock, she doesn’t know which subculture her music belongs.

“The closest subculture we

fit into is punk, but we don’t even fit into punk, so I don’t know,” Blum said. “There is an ethos that is associated with punk that it is political in a sense and outspoken. I fall into that just by being an outspoken band and a queer band.”

According to Blum, her lyrics are often a mix of the political and personal because they deal with issues like gender, sexuality and lifestyle, which can be commonly disputed.

“Because I am a queer person and a person that doesn’t fit into a lot of categories in this world, that by nature of being who I am and by writing about the things I write about, there is this notion that my music is political,” Blum said.

Blum’s music is a personal political manifesto. “Even when I don’t intend for it to be, the fact that its subversive to nature and culture makes my personal narrative political in a way.”

Blum graduated from State University of New York at Purchase and makes her living as a musician. When she started, she explained how hard it was to be a musician because she felt left behind by her peers who were all getting nine-tofive jobs. However, because of the current state of the job market, Blum has found it just as hard for her friends to get a steady, well paying job.

“Just watching my friends try to get jobs right now, it’s not any easier to get a job as a teach-

er than to get a job in music,” Blum said. “It used to be that music was really risky and having a job as a teacher was really not, but it’s kind of like similar level of risk in this economy.”

Because of this, Blum feels a little safer pursuing music.

That being said, Blum hopes to someday work in a field where she can help people work through their creative passions.

“Music is funny,” Blum said.

“I don’t feel secure in it, and I wonder what level of financial security musicians and artists need to get at before they don’t feel ‘this is working right now, but it’s going to stop working at some point.’”

Blum will play on Oct. 23 at the Watercooler.

In sports, injuries are as similar as touchdowns and home runs.

The competitive atmosphere of sports encourages athletes to do their best and try their hardest on the field. Sometimes athletes will play through minor strains and soreness to help their team in the pursuit of glory. While this quality is revered in athletes, it could potentially lead to putting too much stress on a muscle and cause an overuse injury. explaining overuse injuries

There are two basic types of injuries: acute and overuse.

An acute injury is sudden and is obvious, i.e. knee tears. Overuse injuries are a little more tricky, such as hairline fractures.

They start very subtly and there may not even be much pain at first, but continued stress put onto the injury causes a more serious and even more painful fracture down the road.

Because of the difficulty in distinguishing an overuse injury from a minor one, the reported number of these injuries continues to grow. increases in overuse injuries

Many experts immediately point to increased specialization and training routines as the primary cause. Many kids today are being put into sports at younger ages and are specializing in one sport

“Youth specialization is huge in the research world right now. The question now is, do you let your child try different sports, or do you focus on one?” said assistant athletic trainer Ashley Hudson.

Many studies have shown specialization encourages more serious overuse injuries. In April, the American Journal of Sports Medicine recorded a study of 1,190 athletes from the ages 7-18. The athletes with serious overuse injuries were 1.90 times more likely to be highly specialized athletes, compared to participants with a non-serious overuse injury.

There are other barriers young athletes face in local rural communities.

“As far as college athletes go, by the time we see them, we’re the ones who take care of any overuse injuries. By the time they get to us, they’ve probably had something that’s developed before,” Marc Paul, assistant athletic director and head athlete trainer, said. the nature of an athlete

While determination and ignorance of injuries worked while athletes were in high school, they tend to revert to the training and rehab methods athletes used in high school as well, which hinders the important process of adapting to their maturing bodies.

According to Hudson, athletes know how to compete in a smart manner just that it takes longer for some to figure out than others. And that student athlete bodies are still changing and that students priorties change over a four to five year process.

Stating that there are several dynamics going into this growth that include: nutrition, sleep, studying, and being a full time student.

The culture in sports still maintains the stereotype mentality of ‘if you can walk, you can play’.

This can cause players to be hostile towards injured teammates, and increase pressure from parents and coaches to play through injuries.

“Some kids take it as not wanting to let their teammates, coaches and parents down,” Paul said. “The mental side of injuries and sports is, by far and away, one of the fastest growing issues in sports we’ve seen in the last decade more than anything else.”

According to Hudson,

the culture of sports is routed in maintaining the traditional treatment of these injuries.

The only way to change the culture is by changing the mindset of it, Paul feels. Parents and coaches must realize the way injuries were treated 15 to 20 years ago is not the they should be treated now. It is important to remember, at the end of the day, students are all just kids and the vast majority of students only have so long in competitive athletics. As new sports medicine and sports psychology trickles down to the lower levels and parents see success, it will start to carry over.

Despite the risk of overuse, you can still train hard safely. Eating right and getting enough sleep do wonders to lower your risk of an injury from overuse. students should make sure to use correct mechanics to prevent injuries.

The key for college students is to adapt their training as their body changes, and not ignore minor injuries that linger.

“It’s not complicated. It’s really not,” Paul said. “You could have the most elaborate training schedule in the world but if you’re hurt, it does you absolutely no good.”

Big opponents show what Broncos are made of Asst. Sports & Rec Editor

Americans love soft drinks —especially Coca-Cola. It tastes good, goes down easy and makes you feel great. On the contrary, drinking a can of tomato juice can be a nightmare for some. For the majority, the taste is bad and it can be difficult to drink.

Now imagine you have the two lined up next to each other—tomato juice in one hand and Coca-Cola in the other.

In order to drink the Coke, you have to get through that tomato juice. So you chug the tomato juice and then drink the Coke, right? This scenario is similar to Boise State’s schedule. Three of there first four games were against difficult non-conference opponents (Washington, BYU, Virginia) and then eight games against lower end Division I opponents (Hawaii, Colorado State, Utah State, Wyoming, UNLV, New Mexico, Air Force, San Jose State).

The Broncos’ strength of schedule ranks 118th in the nation for the rest of the season, and they have a 38.9% chance of winning the rest of their games. Of the teams Boise State plays the rest of the season, Air Force Academy has the next highest percentage of winning out in conference play at a 0.6% clip.

Barring a bad loss, the Broncos are on the path to finish the season with one loss and have a shot to play in a New Year’s Six Bowl game.

The stats prove how well the Broncos have been defending the run in the first four games.

They are first in the nation in rush yards per game, allowing 44.3 per game with an average of 1.53 yards per rush.

Add that to only two rushing touchdowns allowed this season, and that is what stirs the drink of the Broncos’ solid defense. Heading into week five, Boise State is ranked first in the country in defending against the run led by junior stud Kamalei Correa. running the ball

It only follows suit that the Broncos can stop the run on defense and then do it on the offensive end. Sophomore Jeremy McNichols has been the answer on the ground averaging 4.3 yards per carry. The more impressive statistic is the eight touchdowns McNichols had heading into week five against Hawaii. That was tied for fourth most in the country with some impressive names that include LSU’s Leonard Fournette and Alabama’s Derrick Henry.

McNichols is carried by his strong offensive line, which features redshirt senior Rees Odhiambo, redshirt junior Mario Yakoo, redshirt senior Marcus Henry and redshirt junior Steven Baggett—an experienced line that paves the way for McNichols and backups, redshirt junior Devan Demas and redshirt senior Kelsey Young.

McNichols knows how well he has played so far, but when asked about his eight touchdowns through three games, it really didn’t matter.

“It’s great,” McNichols said.

“But the only stat that really matters to me is winning.” dealing with adversity

One of the biggest takeaways from this Boise State team is watching them handle adversity.

“That’s something I learned about this team. We weren’t in very good situations in this game and we still responded and found a way to win,” head coach Bryan Harsin said postgame against Washington in week one.

The Broncos struggled in the second half of their opener versus Washington but were able to find a way to win. In week two, Boise State fell to BYU in a devastating Hail Mary fashion, but came back against Idaho State and won in a dominating way.

In that same game, the Broncos lost their starting quarterback Ryan Finley. The week after, Boise State threw freshman Brett Rypien into his first start in a road game against a power five conference team in Virginia. The Broncos won 56-14 and have shown a recurring theme of responding to adversity in tough times—an important quality to have during a long and arduous college football season. the big play

The easiest problem to point out is Boise State’s issues with giving up the long ball.

Of the 62 points the defense has given up this year, 35 of them have come from plays that were 30 yards or more and resulted in touchdowns.

The loss at BYU saw pass plays of 84 yards, 70 yards and then the final, 35 yard heave that won the game for the Cougars.

In last week’s win over Vir-

ginia, both touchdowns came on big plays of 75 yards and 45 yards.

If the Broncos want to compete with the big boys, the secondary will have to tighten up on scramble plays and look to make the smart play instead of the savvy one.

Boise State is fifth in the country among team interceptions after week four with eight, but will have to try and stop the “big play.” the quarterback conundrum

Ryan Finley started the year but went down with an ankle injury in week three. Brett Rypien took over in week four and ran with the opportunity. We all know what he did against Virginia, but do the Broncos have their starting quarterback?

Thomas Stuart will continue to get snaps and give opposing defenses a different look, but the instability of the quarterback has been an issue for Boise State. As a teammate, you want to know who the guy is under center making the throws.

Brett Rypien will try to run this offense and win more football games for a team that is hungry for another New Year’s Six bowl game. If there is one take away from Rypien’s first game, it wasn’t what he did while the ball was in play.

“The thing I was most proud of Brett for was when he got hit, he got up,” Harsin said post-game against Virginia. “Not just for the sake of getting up, but the number one requirement for being a quarterback is toughness. He continued to do that.”

The Boise State women’s swimming and diving team has been involved in a bit of a shakeup with the team’s coaching staff.

On Jul. 20, head coach and founder of the program Kristin Hill announced she was stepping down from her position.

“After nine wonderful years of building a program here at Boise State, and 18 years of college coaching, I have decided it is time to spend more time with my young children and my husband,” In an interview with Bronco Sports, Hill said. “They have all sacrificed so much to allow me to pursue this dream as a Division I college coach, and now I feel a strong pull to give more back to them and allow our family to spend more time together.”

Following Hill’s resignation, Boise State began to search for a coach to fill her vacant position. It was announced on Aug. 25 that the role was to be filled by Coach Jeremy Kipp.

Kipp had 16 years of coaching at the collegiate level, with his most recent coaching job at the University of Southern California, where he coached both men’s and women’s teams for USC. “I am both excited and humbled Curt Apsey and his staff have chosen me to lead the Boise State women’s swimming and diving program,” Kipp

After his appointment as the new head coach of the swimming and diving program, Kipp began to bring in new staff to add to his team.

On Sept. 15, Kipp announced former USC All-American Swimmer Meghan Hawthorne was to be on the staff at Boise State as an assistant coach.

In her college career, Hawthorne swam in the 2012 olympic time trials and, served as an age group coach for a local swim club in San Fernando, California.

“When I thought about an inspirational woman to help lead our women’s program, Meghan Hawthorne was a natural fit.

As an athlete, Meghan was committed and worked herself into the world class strata of athletics,” Kipp said in an interview with Bronco Sports. “Meghan is proof that a strong will and positive attitude are more valuable than any level of talent.
