TASING INCIDENT UNDER INVESTIGATION SAMMY HANF NEWS REPORTER

F

reshman Hayden Wyatt was arrested Feb. 5 and tased

by Appalachian State's campus police at approximately 2 a.m. in Bowie Hall following a disturbance.

ASU Police Chief Gunther Doerr said this was the first instance of a taser being activated by an officer. The charges are simple physical assault upon an officer and resisting a public officer. Bail was set at $1,000 and the arresting officer was Lt. Darrin Tolbert.

Wyatt said the night started calmly enough for him, he was about to leave the dorm when his roommate showed up, closely followed by the night assistant.

Wyatt said the night assistant asked him to describe his roommate because he seemed to be intoxicated, he obliged and then identified his room, which his roommate had locked himself in. Wyatt said he didn’t have his key at the time so he was unable to let the night assistant in.

Wyatt said the door was eventually unlocked and he went in to talk to his roommate. Around this time, Wyatt said two police officers arrived at the scene and asked if they could enter his room.

Wyatt consented.

The officers entered the room and Wyatt said they immediately walked over to the bed and told his roommate to wake up because he was under arrest.

Doerr said that the police were there

because Wyatt’s roommate had escaped from the back of an ambulance after he was discovered unconscious in the kitchen.

At this point Wyatt said he became confused and upset, not understanding why his roommate was being arrested because as far as he knew he was only drunk.

The police report said that Wyatt was cursing loudly as Tolbert attempted to get him away from the area. Doerr said that Tolbert was called to the scene because the other two officers were having difficulty restraining Wyatt’s roommate.

Doerr said that Tolbert then attempted to arrest Wyatt for resisting or obstructing an officer. This led to a struggle that culminated in Tolbert’s use of a taser in an attempt to subdue and handcuff Wyatt.

A video recording of the incident was taken by Austin Donohue and uploaded on YouTube. The video, which only depicts the aftermath, was circulated around campus the next day.

Wyatt said he was breathalyzed and that no alcohol was found in his system.

Hannah Minter, a friend of Wyatt’s, said that she and several others attended a public forum held shortly after the incident and raised questions about whether the use of this kind of force was police policy.

Doerr said the department is currently

“We certainly don’t want people to think that we’re trying to hide something, we want to be transparent,” Doerr said.

Hayley Durant, a friend of Wyatt’s, said she had a lot of trouble dealing with the incident and how it affected her friends.

“I have never seen my friends that shaken up,” Durant said.

Doerr said that unfortunately incidents like this happen, and that it is always best

to voice grievances with an officer after the fact, when everyone involved has had a chance to cool down.

Doerr said if students want to file a complaint they have several avenues to do so and encouraged them to give the department a call, come in or file a complaint online.

“We want people to tell us if an officer is out of line, so we can look at it,” Doerr said.

Wyatt’s court date is March 1 and he is currently facing suspension.

POLICE CRACK DOWN ON CHILD PREDATORS SAMMY HANF NEWS REPORTER

T

he Boone Police Department recently apprehended a man for attempting to solicit sex with a minor, the eighth of such arrests that have been made since the beginning of

2015.

The statement released by the department said the investigation was conducted in cooperation with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina.

A sexually explicit ad was posted on a popular website by the suspect, John Edward Heelan, which caught investigators' attention. This led to them arranging a meeting between Heelan and a police officer he believed was a 14-year-old girl. The police then interviewed Heelan and searched his car, leading to his arrest.

Heelan was jailed for one count of felony solicitation of a child by computer and one count of indecent liberties with a minor. His bond was set at $50,000.

The case is part of a larger effort by the BPD to crack down on sexual offenses against minors, an effort facilitated by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Lt. Chris Hatton, chief officer of the BPD’s investigations division, said the department didn’t realize the extent of the problem until the end of 2014.

“The reason that these are a fairly recent development coming from our office is because, it's sort of a silent problem," Hatton said. "It's a problem that people aren’t coming in to tell you about.”

Hatton said they stumbled upon multiple suspicious listings while going through digital evidence for an entirely unrelated case. Being unfamiliar with investigating such crimes, they went to the SBI for guidance on how to conduct the investigation.

Alan Flora is the special agent in charge of the computer crimes unit of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Flora said that the SBI gives assistance to departments by providing specialists that can lend their expertise to a local department’s investigation.

Hatton said their initial investigation was closely overseen by the Internet Crimes Against Children task force and involved them posting a fake profile of a 14-year-old girl, which received aggressively sexual messages from a 40-year-old man within a week of its posting.

“When we got that message from him, that solidified our fear ... this could be an innocent girl just being on the internet just doing what kids that age do, and here's a shark in the water," Hatton said.

Hatton said that after working with the ICAC on several cases, they saw the necessity to send some of their men out to Raleigh to get trained in dealing with these types of crimes.

Hatton said part of the training is conducting investigations to avoid entrapment, a problem Hatton said gets far more attention in entertainment than the criminal justice system and is almost never a major concern in their investigations.

“They are the ones that set up these meetings, they are the ones that drive here," Hatton said. "They are the ones that initially contact this girl."

Hatton said they also monitor personal pages for ads

that seem to be targeted to young girls.

“To a detective, especially one who is looking for somebody who is trying to find a child online, ‘The younger the better’ just screams out, ‘You need to investigate me,’” Hatton said.

During their investigations, Hatton said they have encountered some very tech savvy suspects, even encountering some capable of digitally hiding their identity, which is a scary prospect for the officers who have to track down the predator and make the arrest.

Hatton said they have also encountered some suspects that lose their nerve before proposing a meet up.

“Guys will contact this young girl and do everything all Chris Hatton around the laws," Hatton said.

"They want to talk to this young girl, they want to do things that they shouldn’t be doing with her but they're scared, they won't cross the line.”

Flora said that parents should be vigilant in making sure their children are not putting themselves in danger online, consistently monitoring internet usage on whatever devices or apps they frequent.

“I think it comes down to the parent. The main thing is that if the parent is not naive and they realize that this is a real thing then they can make better decisions for their families," Hatton said. "You can't just go thinking that nobody is gonna contact your kid, you don't know that.”

HOW TO STAY VEGAN ON CAMPUS V CLAIRE BROWN A&E REPORTER

eganism is a form of vegetarianism in which one does not eat any animal byproducts, which include, but are not limited to, milk, eggs, butter, whey, gelatin or any meat, according to Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina, two registered dietitians and authors of “Becoming Vegan.” Pretty quickly, that dismisses a lot of the college food staples like pizza, chicken strips and breakfast-for-dinner on Thursday’s at Traditions. But there are ways to stay true to veganism while living on a college campus, and not only that, there are ways to be vegan while living off of a meal plan.

Being a nutritionally sound vegan can be difficult because cutting meat out of the diet increases a person’s chances of being protein deficient. Davis and Melina state that vegans may be short of protein if they stick mostly to fruits, do not consume sufficient calories, eat too many processed food items or if they do not eat an adequate amount of legumes, which are foods such as nuts, seeds and beans. Not only is protein a major problem area in most vegan diets, but a lot of dairy products are vital calcium sources, and without the protein from meat or the calcium from dairy, it can be difficult to search for these things elsewhere.

A healthy vegan should stray from easy to reach for fatty foods like french fries and Oreos, which lack nutritional value, even though they are fine every once in awhile.

The trick is to enjoy plant based foods that are both delicious and nutritious.

Getting in the proper daily amount of fruits, vegetables, protein and water is essential to the health of a vegan. It can be hard to balance a healthy diet with the stress and workload of college, but it is possible, especially with the provisions available on campus.

It may sound overwhelming to attempt veganism on a college campus, but Appalachian State University has plenty of meal options for vegan students.

One classic college food staple is Top Ramen noodles, which are quick and easy, but laden with sodium. However, these noodles are a great canvas for lots of delicious vegetables, making them a great way to combat the broke, unhealthy college student stereotype.

Both chili and oriental flavored Top Ramen noodle packages are available in both markets on campus. Try “un-beefing” up this dish by grabbing a vegetable packed take-away tray from the dining hall. Things like lettuce, carrots and mushrooms make for a hearty meal, and vegans can add some sriracha and soy sauce, or for a little bit of sweetness to cut the heat, add in some brown sugar.

Right after the ramen has been drained of most of the cooking liquid, add in less than half of the flavoring packet and dump in the veggies. This easy-to-do dish with a punch of heat is surprisingly satisfying and totally cruel5

For more recipes that can be cooked up in a dorm kitchen or tips on how to add the necessary nutrients into the diet, vegans can find recipes on PETA’s website or grab a copy of “PETA’s Vegan College Cookbook.”

If class starts soon and there is not time to cook up any ramen, Roess and Trivette Dining Hall have everything under control. Salads can be a quick and easy solution if time is short.

“I like salad because it always fills me up even though it’s super healthy,” Kaley Groover, sophomore psychology major, said. “Also, they have a great variety of beans and fresh veggies.”

While it is nutritious to eat fresh vegetables as often as possible, there are other ways to stay vegan. For instance, both dining halls offer vegetable sushi packs, which include two servings for $6. These contain nutrient rich seaweed and other vegetables that are sure to curb the hunger.

For something that is hot, go to Habanero’s in Roess for burritos. Ask only for beans, rice, salsa and lettuce to keep the animal byproducts at bay. If some extra texture is desired, ask an employee to crush up some tortilla chips into the burrito filling before they wrap it up.

“We do a lot of stuff with tofu [in Sanford Commons]," John Wolcott, manager of Sanford Commons, said of vegan options in Roess Dining Hall.

"You can get vegan stuff at the sub shop, you can get vegan stuff at Habenero’s, we have vegan options at Traditions and

then, of course, there’s the salad bar.”

Also located up the stairs in Roess is Healthy Select. This aesthetic in the dining hall offers only vegetarian and vegan options.

Trivette’s vegan specialties can be found in their Asian bar. They have both entrees and side items which are marked on the menu as vegan. Look for the indicator (V+) beside the item name in order to get a worry-free vegan meal.

“Because items are priced a la carte and because many of our venues offer customizable options, diners are able to create a meal that meets their needs,” the university’s food service specialist Heather Brandon said. “For example, many items can be made vegan by requesting no cheese.”

Sometimes it can be a hassle to walk all the way to the dining hall for one meal, especially when it’s 30 degrees outside. However, the markets on campus offer some things that are able to be taken back to the dorm and kept for long periods of time, so that seemingly thousand mile trek, uphill both ways in the snow and wind, can be long forgotten.

Many breakfast cereals that are offered in the markets are vegan, including favorites like cinnamon-flavored Life and Froot Loops. Instead of dairy milk, grab some almond or soy milk, available in the refrigerator sections. It lasts longer than dairy and tastes just as good over dry cereal.

Another option for breakfast is oatmeal, which can be made with water or non-dairy milk. A banana alongside a

piping hot bowl fills the stomach to the top.

Other vegan foods, like tomato and vegetable soups, are good things to keep on hand as well. These products keep for a long time, and having them on hand may prove fortuitous in the event of unexpected weather conditions.

Both markets are great places for on-campus vegans to go to stock up the pantry. They carry a variety of fruits and vegetables, including apples and green bell peppers.

“I like to buy strawberries because they are sweet, and the market sells good strawberries,” freshman English major Caleb Perdue said. “They’re juicy and ripe.”

They also offer non-dairy yogurts and vegan vegetable patties. All of these items can be found in the refrigerated sections along the walls of the stores.

There are numerous vegan items offered in the marketplaces and cafeterias.

Vegans can simply check the packaging or ask an employee if the item or dish contains animal byproducts.

Learning what veganism means is the easy part, but the rest is a commitment.

Cutting out all animal byproducts sounds difficult, but App State’s cafeterias and marketplaces are incredibly accommodating to this lifestyle. Believe it or not, it is possible to stay both vegan and healthy on a college meal plan. Perhaps it takes a bit more planning, but it is worth it to know that both the body and the environment will be benefitting from every bite that lacks animal byproducts.

W

hile hanging out on Sanford Mall or “Hippie Hill,” chances are there is a hula-hooper or two showing their skills on the lawn. Hula-hooping is a part of a larger culture known as flow arts. Flow arts can be described as prop performance including different flow toys such as hula hoops, poi, which is a toy or prop, staff and wands. This art of practice showcases the elements of rhythm and illusion, creating a “flow” for spectators to marvel over.

The flow arts community here on campus is known as High Country Hoop Troupe, a club formed in spring 2015.

Members of Hoop Troupe meet once a week to practice together, learn new tricks and admire one another’s flow.

Hoop Troupe welcomes all flow arts, even those who have never picked up a prop. Shauna Caldwell, senior art education major and president of the club, brings multiple hula hoops to each meeting just in case any newbies decide to drop by.

Julia Wood, sophomore apparel design and merchandising major and a regular attender of Hoop Troupe, said one of the best qualities of the flow arts community is its inclusivity.

“Everyone I have met has been so kind and willing to help each other improve, as well as teach anyone who wants to learn,” Wood said.

Anyone is welcome to attend a learning prop performance and everyone can develop a flow, Caldwell said.

“You don’t have to be great at it, you just have to be willing to try and have fun,” she said. “The more you practice, the better you will get, and our flow family is there to encourage you every step of the way.”

Caldwell said lots of people get into hooping and stay in Hoop Troupe because of the welcoming community.

Caldwell, Wood and Rachel Wynn, junior accounting major, all got into flow arts through friends who practiced and introduced them to the community.

Performance is a significant part of the flow arts community, Wood said. Whether it is showing a few people a trick or spinning in front of a crowd, showcasing talent is common.

Wood said it is awesome to perform in front of peers.

“When someone nails a really hard trick or learns something new, it’s a win for everyone and we all get really excited,” Wood said. “We’re very proud of each other, and it definitely makes us closer.”

Last semester High Country Hoop Troupe was asked to perform as halftime entertainment during an App State women’s basketball game. Another major platform to perform is at Fire Flow on “Hippie Hill.”

Fire Flow is where flow arts light up, by adding fire to props. The event is run by Inspiral Fire Tribe on Wednesday nights as long as weather permits.

“I love to fire hoop and I want to learn to use more props as well,” Wynn said.

Using different props is inevitable and conducive to the overall fluid atmosphere, Wood said.

“It is pretty common for people who participate in the flow arts to eventually develop an interest in more than one prop,” Wood said.

Wynn finds practicing flow arts meditative because of its constant requirement of physical effort. She said not only will the performer work up a sweat and get some daily exercise in, but practicing can also help flow the worries away.

“I love the meditative quality that it has,” Wynn said.

“When I really get into it, I lose the world around me. I don’t even think about my next move, I just flow and flow and flow.”

Wynn said flow arts are about expression but more importantly about enjoying yourself.

“It’s a stress reliever, workout and a form of expression all rolled into one,” Wynn said.“Who would ever give that up?”

PROTECTING ANIMAL RIGHTS

ANIMAL WELFARE CLUB PROMOTES SUSTAINABILITY ON CAMPUS

O

n a campus that prides itself in making great efforts to be sustainable, one club is trying to reach out about the importance of including animal rights in the sustainability conversation.

The Animal Welfare Club, founded in 2014 by its president Madalene Smith, spreads awareness about animal rights and environmental issues including the use of animal products, the effects of animal agriculture and testing or experimenting on animals.

“I founded it because there were no animal rights clubs on campus,” Smith, a junior advertising major, said. “I felt like a lot of people would be interested and could get behind it.”

The Animal Welfare Club meets at 7:30 p.m. every other Tuesday in the Linville Gorge room of the Plemmons Student Union. During a typical meeting, the club watches a presentation by Smith or one of the other members, followed by a discussion.

The topics of these presentations vary depending on what the different presenters are passionate about, and can range from hunting to factory farming to domesticated animals.

“One of my upcoming presentations is about climate change’s effect on

animals,” Smith said. “Farming animals is affecting climate change, and climate change is affecting already endangered species, and it’s all affecting us. Everything is intertwined.”

Several of the club’s members also participate in other animal-related groups, ranging from national organizations to the local Humane Society.

Hannah Kinder, a senior biology major and the club’s event planner and social media officer, is a campus representative for PETA. PETA sometimes sends Kinder its own materials for campus outreach, but she often comes up with her own ideas and incorporates the Animal Welfare Club into them.

“For Valentine’s Day, PETA sent me vegan chocolates to pass out,” Kinder said. “I just expanded that into an entire week, Love Week, where I talked about loving animals better.”

She partnered with Full Circle Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization located in western North Carolina, for Love Week. Students made valentines for the animals at the sanctuary and Kinder educated about the importance of spaying and neutering among other topics.

Madeline Lippy, a sophomore nutrition major and member of the Animal Welfare Club, is also a campus organizer

for the Humane League, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting animal cruelty.

Lippy spreads awareness of animal rights subjects and promotes Humane League campaigns around campus. One of these campaigns is Meatless Monday, in which students pledge to go vegetarian for one day a week.

“I read this book about animal activism, and it had a quote that stood out to me,” Lippy said. “It talked about how someday, no one will use animal products anymore. But if we go our whole lives doing things to move that day just one day closer, then we can really make a difference.”

However, members of the Animal Welfare Club acknowledge that it can be very difficult to get people to adjust their lifestyles in order to better the environment.

“I think people just really don’t want to change their diets,” Smith said.

“They’re in denial about it being harmful.”

Kinder said many people on campus have a blind spot when it comes to sustainability. Though Appalachian State is one of the greenest schools in the U.S. according to Sierra magazine’s 2014 list of sustainable universities, there is less emphasis on animals and factory farm-

ing’s effect on the environment. Factory farms are industrial operations that raise large amounts of animals for food; they focus on profit and efficiency at the expense of the animals’ welfare, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“Everyone talks about sustainability and being so concerned about the environment, but what they don’t realize is animal agriculture is literally destroying the planet,” Kinder said. “I think educating about that is important. It should definitely be a part of the campus conversation.”

Despite the topic of animal rights being a huge global issue, the Animal Welfare Club prides itself in taking small steps to enact change locally, Smith said.

Although she previously felt powerless as an individual to fight all of the harm being done, she recognizes that the club can make a difference simply by reaching out to the community.

“I know we don’t do a whole lot for animals, like we don’t go to Africa to stop poachers or anything, but I like to think I’m educating people through presentations so they can spread the word locally,” Smith said. “I just want to do as much as I can for the animals around me.”

MALLOW PROVIDES INSIGHT IN NEW POSITION AS GRAD ASSISTANT

I

t's a brisk Thursday morning in Boone as Katie Mallow works in her office at the Holmes Convocation Center, the same place she played for four years as a member of the Appalachian State University women’s basketball team.

She combs through emails and is busy planning the team’s upcoming trip to Georgia. This is just one of the many tasks that fall under the job description of her new occupation: graduate assistant.

A graduate assistant is not a position known by many outside the college basketball community. She does not get a lot of publicity. There weren’t articles written about the promotion in the local papers. Sometimes she doesn’t even get to travel with the team, but her role is a key one for the other coaches and players.

“I’m an assistant,” Mallow said. “I assist with anything anyone needs. I help break down game film with assistant coaches. I help in practice sometimes. I play a scout team role. It’s great coaching experience and great life experience.”

Mallow said she is also in charge of some alumni gatherings, the managers, the scout guys, the gear and perhaps most importantly, the food.

She is tasked with organizing meals, whether at home or on the road. The players receive meals before and after every game, and when they travel all meals are planned and provided, but there have been plenty of times where things did not go as planned.

“We don’t always follow what I have planned out,” Mallow said. “Some things you just can’t plan for when you’re traveling, but we try to.”

Before getting this position, Mallow put herself in the record books during her time as a player at Appalachian State and sits eighth all-time in made 3-pointers with 128. She also ranked in the Top-25 in scoring in the Sun Belt during her senior season and was a team leader throughout. According to App State Sports, she finished her playing career with 891 points, 171 assists and 114 steals.

Because of her consistent on-thecourt play, Mallow has also been able to reach her players in a way some coaches cannot.

“It might be a text I send to one of them after practice or just bringing them aside during practice to talk to them about something I’m seeing, that maybe the coaches have seen too, but I could deliver in a different way that might be easier for them to understand,” Mallow

As a senior point guard last season, Mallow started in all 26 games for the Mountaineers. Mallow was pivotal in leading the team to 14 wins.

Players have been affected by Mallow’s consistent positivity.

“As a grad assistant, she’s been fearless,” senior guard Farrahn Wood said.

“She knows that she has to be positive.

She is the positive voice for us.”

Mallow’s ability to relate to players and stay positive has resonated with the team.

“She’s always been really positive, but now she’s able to see a little bit more since she’s off the court, so she’s really insightful,” junior forward Mia Marshall said. “She was in our position, so she knows how to get it across to us differently than the coaches do.”

Head coach Angel Elderkin said that, regardless of the situation, Mallow has never made it about her personal collegiate success.

“She was the type of player that transitioned to this role and made an immediate separation,” Elderkin said.

“You never hear her talk about ‘When I played.’ She just wants them to succeed.

She never makes it about her.”

She has also been able to offer offthe-court advice to help the Mountaineer players and coaches.

“Having played with some, I know how to talk to them, and I know how good they can be,” Mallow said. “The players are more comfortable with me so they’re more candid. They say things that they probably shouldn’t around me, and then it’s my choice to do what I want with that information.”

Elderkin said she uses this ability to gain a feel for where her team is at.

“I trust her,” Elderkin said. “She’s really good at being able to provide a pulse for me, but never crossing the line. I feel our players can communicate to her.”

As important of a role as Mallow plays, it could just have easily never happened. Mallow had never even thought about applying for the position, or continuing in college basketball.

“My senior year I started thinking about what I wanted to do,” Mallow said. “Like most seniors, they’re like ‘Oh no, I’m almost done.’ I just didn’t have something job-wise that I wanted to go after right away. I really enjoyed playing basketball in college, and that was my goal that I had set for myself for the longest time. I had never thought about going further.”

During her senior season Mallow gained a close relationship with Elderkin, which led to her applying for, and ultimately getting, the job; a position which had over 50 applicants, according to Mallow.

“I’ve always had a passion for hiring former players to help them on their path,” Elderkin said. “I’m a new coach to App, and I’m trying to establish this culture. The more we talked, to be on my staff as a former member of the program here, a member of my transition, I [thought] it would just be awesome.”

Mallow said that Elderkin understood the type of person she was, and that made the process quick and easy for both sides. The players have benefitted from having the familiar face around.

“Her new role gives her a new perspective on the things that she went through,” Wood said. “It’s unique that

Mallow, who majored in psychology as an undergrad, is currently attending Appalachian State’s graduate school. She aims to use her education as well as what she’s learned from playing and coaching as tools to help her in her dream job: being a high school counselor and bas-

ketball coach.

Through these opportunities, Mallow has a gained a new outlook on life that she’ll use in both professions.

“I’m gonna let my players know how much I care about them and love them as people," Mallow said. "They need that. No matter what, basketball is just a game. It’s just an avenue to do a lot of great things, but their worth is beyond how good of a basketball player they

are.”

As for now, Mallow will continue in her role at Appalachian State, and Elderkin said she plans to continue to use her abilities to communicate and relate to the players.

“She was their teammate and their sister,” Elderkin said. “Now she’s their bigger sister, trying to help them get through the same challenges that she went through.”

elcomed by a plethora of "boos" from Hoosier hopefuls, the Mountaineers wrestling team (12-4, 6-1 SoCon) traveled north on Sunday to take on Indiana (6-7, 3-6 Big Ten). Unfortunately for the home fans, however, they would leave feeling hopeless, as the Mountaineers prevailed 21-13.

Although App would start the match off with a 6-4 decision win in the 157-pound match by David Peters-Logue, Indiana fired back with three wins of their own, bringing the score to 10-3 in favor of the Hoosiers.

But in the 197-pound matchup, a Randall Diabe decision would help to put the Black and Gold back on the right track. Denzel Dejournette was flawless as always, and trampled Indiana’s attempt to stop him, bringing the Mountaineers within one at 10-9.

Vito Pasone took on No. 19 Elijah Oliver in the 125-pound weight class and fought until the end. But in the final seconds of the third period, Oliver managed to take down Pasone to set the score 13-9.

The Hoosiers would not lay down on their own, so Michael Longo and company had to help them hit the mats. After a 6-2 decision by Appalachian’s Irvin Enriquez, Longo kept the momentum rolling, pinning a Hoosier and retaking the lead 18-13.

In the final bout of the afternoon, Matt Zovistoski added a 6-5 decision to seal the deal for the Apps and taking down the Big Ten's Hoosiers 21-13.

“We deserve to be here,” Dejournette said. “We can win at any level if we just put our minds to it. It doesn’t matter the size of our school or program we have the biggest heart out there.”

Coach JohnMark Bentley echoed Dejournette.

“It was a great team effort," Bentley said. "It kind of wrapped up the ‘dual meet’ season how it’s been all year.”

That statement is most certainly true as the Mountaineers have managed to receive their highest ranking in a poll ever this weekend. FloWrestling ranked App as high as No. 18 in the country while the USA Today bumped the Mountaineers to No. 23 over both Arizona State and SoCon rivals Chattanooga. The Mountaineers also moved up three spots in the InterMat Wrestling poll, from No. 25 to No. 22.

On March 5, the SoCon comes together in Asheville for the conference tournament championship. Chattanooga is looking to defend their five-time run as SoCon champions but have a huge obstacle in their way. A 6-foot-2-inch, 265-pound obstacle named Denzel Dejournette, to be more precise.

But Dejournette isn't the only obstacle. Every Mountaineer on the squad poses a threat to opponents as well. Each played a part in the team's 22-15 victory over Chattanooga on Feb. 5, when the team handed the Mocs their first SoCon loss since 2012.

There is no doubt that at some point in the tournament multiple Mountaineers will come face to face with a Bulldog from Gardner-Webb, who the Mountaineers suffered their only conference loss to in January.

Dejournette touched on going into the tournament better than what they were and finishing out matches. The heavyweight for App said it was all about having faith over fear.

“We know we worked hard and we need to believe in our conditioning and the process coach put us through," Dejournette said.

Looking back on past seasons, the Mountaineers are no stranger to talented wrestlers.

In fact, Bentley said he has had previous teams in which the group of guys were just all around better athletes. Talent, however, is not the only thing that makes a team successful.

“The most important factor in having a successful year is having a group that buys in and is 100 percent in to what your vision is,” Bentley said.

The chemistry and culture of a team is what makes or breaks the group. For this group, nothing appears to stopping them.

The Black and Gold eagerly await March 5 to finally take their shot to claim their title as the 2016 Southern Conference champions.

JUNIOR CORNERBACK SEEKS TO REBOUND FROM SEASON-ENDING INJURY MATT KROMBACH SPORTS REPORTER

o athlete in any sport hopes or plans to get injured. Small injuries can be fought through, as adrenaline can help numb the pain. But those unfortunate enough to sustain season-ending injuries are forced to take a step back and watch their teams’ success or failures from the sidelines.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers football team accomplished an incredible feat by obtaining a 10-2 overall record and a Camellia Bowl victory in their first year of Football Bowl Subdivision post-season eligibility. Four months earlier, however, then-redshirt sophomore cornerback Brandon Pinckney suffered a season-ending knee injury. The pain of the injury was excruciating, but the thought of not being able to help propel his team to glory was worse.

“It was very hard, especially when you work so hard to get to a place where you’ve been here for three years and you finally get the shot and it just happens just like that,” Pinckney said. “It hurt real bad, but after the first day you find out, you get all your tears out and everything, and then its back to work.”

Despite being sidelined for the season, he found himself in with vital player-coach responsibility, helping develop the newcomers in junior-college transfer Mondo Williams and freshman Tae Hayes. Along with Latrell Gibbs, that cornerback unit combined for 10 of the defense's 18 interceptions on the year.

“He played a huge role with helping me out at the cornerback position because I was

coming in as a new guy,” Williams said. “Him being hurt just helped us even more, not really because he was hurt, but him being on the sideline and telling us the calls and helping me with what I had to do at corner. So I appreciate all his leadership.”

With that role in place for Pickney, one message stuck out that he always tried to reiterate to his teammates.

“Always be prepared and anything can happen,” Pinckney said. “I can get hurt, they can get hurt. Just always be prepared. That’s the biggest thing I wanted to put in their heads.

‘Next man up,’ be ready at all times.”

Now six months after the injury, Pinckney himself is recovered, prepared and feeling confident in the process. As of right now, he leads the team in interceptions in spring practices and secured his first pick in his first spring practice back from injury.

“There’s still that slight mental aspect because this is my first real action in six months,” he said. “But I mean I do feel really confident, I feel stronger than I did in August. I’m picking up where I left off and that’s the main goal — not to drop off.”

Cornerback coach Bryan Brown certainly knows what to expect of Pinckney in his three seasons with the defensive backs at App State.

However, with Brown’s playing time at Ole Miss and four prior years of coaching experience, he understands the aspect of the injury, as well as playing after recovery.

“Anytime you have an injury you always come back, that leg or that arm or whatever

comes back, stronger than ever,” Pinckney said.

“The main thing about an injury like that is you have to come back with confidence and he’s a guy that has a lot of confidence and I think that’s definitely going to help him in the near future.”

The team doesn’t want to take any risks, however, and is keeping Pinckney from participating in any tackling drills until the fall.

“The main Brandon Pinckney goal is to get him to fall camp,” Brown said.

Fall training camp is now just a couple months away and Pinckney hopes to recover his permanent spot among the team's top cornerbacks. However, fighting for another exceptional season as an overall team seems to be his top priority.

“I don’t see why we shouldn’t be 11-2 if not 12-1,13-0," Pinckney said. "Just looking at the team we have coming back, we lost two great players in Ronald Blair and Doug Middleton, but I feel like its no drop off in the two guys stepping into that position."

he Quinnipiac Bobcats (0-0) and the Appalachian State Mountaineers (0-4) face off in a weekend series at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium beginning Friday. The Mountaineers have gotten off to a rough start after facing four quality opponents (Coastal Carolina, Virginia, Old Dominion, and South Carolina) all on the road. Returning home will hopefully propel Appalachian to a much-needed series win.

Get the bats warmed up After an 0-4 start to the season, Appalachian State needs to get the bats going as they head back to Boone for this weekend series against the Bobcats. Only scoring 1.25 runs per game in their first four games is not the formula to win. Incorporating some hit and runs or stealing some bases may get the offense going and get the team heading in the right direction to winning their first game of the season. Getting runs would take a lot of pressure off of the pitching too, as they won’t feel like they have to go out to the mound and be perfect.

Freshman outfielder Beau Myers has had a great start to the season, posting a .357 batting average in his first four games, while Tanner Mann-Fix, another freshman hitting at the top of the lineup, has posted a .556 batting average. I'd look for both to get on base and score some runs for the struggling Appalachian offense early on in this series.

Early Lead In all four of the Mountaineer losses, they have

not scored the first run of the game. It has been the opposition every time who has scored first. When a team is struggling and always playing from behind, the team will tend to press more than playing free and lose, which in baseball is very important.

This is not a game you can play stiff and lacking confidence, and Appalachian has started all games so far behind the eight ball. With multiple freshmen in the lineup, confidence is paramount. I expect the Mountaineers to come out pressing the issue early in the games this series, trying to get ahead of the opposition so they don’t have to play from behind.

Schedule Seeing Quinnipiac for a four-game series at home might be just what this Appalachian team needs to get some wins and jump start their season.

After four games against quality programs (three that are ranked), getting home could be exactly what the doctor ordered. South Carolina at No. 24, No. 23 Coastal Carolina and No. 4 Virginia are the toughest teams the Mountaineers will face all season, so only positives will come out of seeing such great competition early on. This is a young team and I expect to see growth from the grueling early season match-ups this team has had.

If the team could find a way to string together a few wins in this series with Quinnipiac, they may be able to carry some momentum into the upcoming week, where they'll face North Carolina Central, and the weekend, where the team will take on Stony Brook, Bowling Green and Elon in the Elon Tournament.

MAPWORKS DOESN’T HELP TRANSFERS JAMES BRANCH OPINION WRITER

ear the beginning of each semester, freshmen and first year transfer students are asked to complete the Mapworks survey, a questionnaire that focuses on helping these students map out their strengths and weaknesses.

The purpose of the questionnaire is to help students connect to the resources based on their answers, according to the Mapworks webpage.

As a transfer student with two years of college under his belt, the process of sitting down and thinking about all my weaknesses is not only redundant, but disheartening.

When I started at Appalachian State last fall, I came in knowing what I needed to do to make an A in my classes.

I also knew that a quick search on the school’s website would point me in the direction of getting help.

The Mapworks survey did not help me in any way.

Not only is the survey pointless for transfer students, it is written in a weird way.

The issue was not so much the questions themselves, but the way the answers were scaled. The answers were on a scale of one to seven, with one being “not at all,” seven being “extremely” and five being “moderate”.

The problem is that, without warning, the answers switch from one being “not at all” to seven being “not at all.” Out of the blue, the response bubbles are switched in value.

This leaves the student who are trying to answer honestly and correctly with a survey of incorrect information if they did

not notice the values of the answers had changed.

So if the student knew nothing about their strengths and weaknesses, this would leave them with false information, and not have helped them very much.

One way to fix this would be to keep all the answer scale the same throughout, without switching any values. It feels like the creators of Mapworks are trying to test if you are paying attention or not.

Of course, students should be paying attention, but the practical reality is that they often do not, something the creators

of Mapworks should have known when the university set up the program.

For a tool like this, which is intended to help people make important determinations about their college careers, the tool should be as simple as possible.

Also, the survey should be optional for transfer students. As a group of people with college experience, we do not need to a survey to tell us what we need improvement on. We just need a resource to tell us where to get help on our weaknesses.

Even though Mapworks gives students a way to connect to campus resources like the tutoring center or the writing center, a quick look the Appstate website can send me to those resources faster then Mapworks can.

For the freshmen who are required to take it, Mapworks should be improved to help those students get better information. For transfer students, it should be optional.

INVESTING APP, ACORNS, IS A GOOD OPTION FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS LAUREN MERRILL OPINION WRITER

ecently, experts have observed a noticeable delay in savings among millennials.

As a bankrate.com survey from August revealed, over 10 percent of millennials say they delay savings, largely because of student loan debt.

A good way for millennials to begin saving for the future is to invest in stocks, but just 18 percent of millennials view the stock market as a good way to save for the future, according to a Goldman Sachs survey.

Investing money is crucial, especially for college students who will soon be entering the real world.

Obviously, the type of investment that earns significant gains will require time and research. Luckily, there is an app available that can help millennials save modest amounts of money with relative ease.

The app is Acorns, a mobile app that allows anyone to invest simply through their cell phone.

This app is meant to target users who are 35 or younger, and it works on a system where you are investing spare change and do not need a large amount of money to start investing.

The app works by simply connecting to the debit or credit card you provide when you sign up. When you make a purchase, it rounds up what you spent to the next dollar and invests the spare change.

There are over 3,500 stocks that your money can be invested into, and there is no minimum to open an account. All data is encrypted and never stored on your phone, and you have the power to set the amount of risk you want to be involved with.

Acorns uses six primary exchange-traded funds to invest your money. By doing this, Acorns is using a managed fund so that users do not have to partake in large buy-ins that an ETF such as Vanguard, one of Acorns most popular ETFs, would usually require an

investor to do.

Acorns had 65,000 members, mostly millennials, as of April 2015, according to CNN. At that time, the members had saved a total of $25 million.

It should be said that those numbers don't give a large amount of savings per person. But for college students, the program gives several attractive features.

One of the best things for college students and anyone under the age of 24, investing is free.

For those older than 24, there is a $1 fee for accounts with less than $5,000. Depending on the amount of savings, that might not make it the best deal for some older people.

Another major benefit is convenience. Students can set the account up on their phones, and from there the entire process is simple.

You don't even have to go into a bank, you simply log into your phone and automatically begin collecting interest.

The other reason to use this app is because of the safety guarantee with it. Each Acorns account is insured by up to $500,000 through the Securities Investor Protection Corporation, according to Investopedia.

Overall, Acorns is a safe and easy way for students to begin investing. It is free for college students and you only invest some spare change each time you make a payment with your credit or debit card.

Of course, as we move on after college we will need to look at other investment and savings options.

But as college students, this is a great option for putting away some money in school in a way that is simple.
