GEOLOGY STUDENTS GET KIDS EXCITED APP PRESENTS AT VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY TOMMY CULKIN SENIOR NEWS REPORTER

ix Appalachian State University geology students recently presented at the Virginia Museum of Natural History as part of an outreach event called Dino Day. Andy Heckert, the geology professor who led the trip, said the day consists of dinosaur themed exhibits and displays, and many schools set up displays where they interact with the museum’s patrons, showing fossils and answering questions.

Austin Deans, a freshman biology major, said they wanted to raise awareness for Appalachian’s geology program but also for the sciences in general.

“We talked to a lot of people about our program and what we’re doing, and hopefully we raised some interest for Appalachian geology,” Deans said. “But the entire event was focused around interest in science and paleontology, so I think we raised a lot of awareness about science besides at Appalachian.”

Additionally, Appalachian took its display one step further.

“We showed the public a bunch of casts and real fossils, and we have a bunch of toys that we match up to show kids,” Heckert said. “What makes us different than all the other exhibitors is that we actually brought some sediment and some microscopes, and we had a couple students looking through the microscopes, looking for new fossils right there. So we’re actually doing science while we’re there, actively improving the fossil record.”

Amanda Hendrix, a freshman geology major, said they brought roughly 25 fossils.

“We had a number of fossils on display, such as Triceratops bones and Tyrannosaur teeth,” Hendrix said.

In addition to the sizable fossil collection, Appalachian’s geology students brought another exhibit with them: an interactive video game.

Senior geology major Haviv Avrahami has modified a 2001 Playstation 2 game titled "Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis" to include more dinosaur species and updated the appearances of the existing dinosaurs. He also added brief descriptions of all the dinosaurs that the original game lacked.

“The game was a fun little park builder, almost like ‘The Sims’ or ‘Roller Coaster Tycoon,’ where you could fly around and explore the park and cool things like that,” Avrahami said. “A few years ago, the idea popped into my head that there’s a lot of potential here, if I could get into the code of the game to turn this into a simulation that could be used as a museum display or an educational tool.”

Avrahami said the video game was one of the most popular parts of Appalachian’s exhibit because it shows dinosaurs as they actually looked, rather than

“When people went and saw ‘Jurassic World,’ they saw a great movie with a great plot, but they didn’t see good science behind it,” Avrahami said. “My goal was to display these dinosaurs in a more scientifically accurate way.”

Heckert said Appalachian’s exhibit was the biggest at Dino Day. “There were some other schools there,

but they had no real exhibits,” Heckert said. “We go all in on this more than anybody else.”

Heckert said he puts such a big emphasis on these sorts of events because it is important to help educate the public.

“Fundamentally we’re a university, so we’re all about education,” Heckert said.

“We want to do outreach because we want an educated public and it’s import-

ant to reach out to people when they’re interested in science.”

Deans says the high level of the school’s display speaks volumes about the culture at Appalachian.

“It says that our school cares a lot about citizen science and getting kids interested in the sciences,” Deans said, “We managed to talk to at least 600 people, and that’s really impressive.”

APPALACHIAN IN IOWA

en Appalachian State University political science students travelled to Iowa to witness the presidential caucus, a crucial early part of the election process.

The trip was a part of a course called the Iowa Project, which looks at the importance of the Iowa Caucus in determining the next president of the United States.

“The objective of the course is to study the Iowa Caucus, and more generally, how it relates to the presidential nomination and campaign process,” professor Phillip Ardoin said. “We talk about elections all the time, but it’s not often that we as political scientists actually engage in this process and see it firsthand.”

A caucus is a meeting of voters in a specific precinct. The number of supporters for the various candidates determines the number of delegates those candidates will receive in Iowa’s Congressional District Convention and the state convention, which in turn will determine the amount of delegates for the presidential nominating conventions.

The Democratic and Republican caucuses are conducted in different ways. The Democrats conduct the caucus publicly. People align themselves with the candidate they support and then they publicly count the heads. For the Republicans, the people anonymously fill out a ballot.

“The Democrats and Republicans actually had their caucus in the same building,” Eloise Hincker, a graduate student who went on the trip, said. “However, the Democratic one is much more interesting to witness, so I only watched that one.”

Ardoin said the trip was a learning experience because there are a lot of misconceptions about what a caucus actually is.

“Most people know that the Iowa Caucus is important in the process of electing our president, but very few people actually know what a caucus is and how it works,” Ardoin said.

There were 870 people at the precinct that the Appalachian students went to. The caucus traditionally is very lightly attended, with only a few dozen people per precinct, and Bradway said she believes the unprecedented turnout is indicative of the divisive state of current politics.

“Based on everything we’d read, these things typically don’t have much turnout, but this was absolutely packed,” Courtney Bradway, a graduate student who went on the trip, said. “And I think this is extremely telling about the state of things, how divided this nation is right now.”

While in Iowa, the students got to meet eight presidential candidates: Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Bernie Sanders, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul.

“I was absolutely starstruck,” Hincker said. “I likely shook hands with the future president.”

Hincker said that one of the most memorable moments from the trip came when she saw Hillary Clinton because former president Bill Clinton was there as well.

“Even though we didn’t get to meet him personally, just being in the same room as a former president was an amazing experience and I’d never felt anything like that before,” Hincker said.

Bradway said she was surprised at how personable all the candidates they met were.

“Meeting them in person was great, because you really get to see all of their redeeming qualities that way,” Bradway said. “Even candidates who I don’t necessarily agree with, when you go up and talk to them and shake their hand, you understand why people like them.”

Ardoin describes the class, which meets infrequently on Sunday nights and consists of five undergraduate and five graduate students, as unorthodox.

“We’ll have some assigned articles, and our big book this semester is called ‘Why Iowa’ and that’s most of the substance of our class,” Ardoin said. “We’ll meet a couple more times this semester, but for the most part, the students will be spending the rest of the semester working on their final projects.”

Ardoin hopes to be able to teach a similar course again in the future.

“This class has been a joy to teach,” Ardoin said. “Hopefully in four years I’ll be able to teach this course again.”

WHERE TO WINE AND DINE YOUR VALENTINE

The Boone Waffle House location will not be providing candle-lit meals for their dinners, as a Charlotte location will. However, it is still a great option for couples wanting to enjoy breakfast together.

ith Valentine's Day steadily approaching, struggling to find the perfect date spot can be anything but romantic. For those running low on time and ideas, here are a few suggestions on which restaurants to dine with that special someone.

Waffles, hash browns, sausage and eggs are staples for any Sunday morning. Therefore, Waffle House’s seat-yourself breakfast bar layout takes a lot of pressure off of the situation, especially when taking someone out for the first time this Valentine’s Day. Conversely, for those who have been together for quite a while and don’t want to make a big fuss about the gushy day, Waffle House will be offering their everyday menu and smiling service to accommodate.

Waffle House offers both breakfast and dinner options at a price that can work for even a student’s budget.

There is one rumor left to be addressed regarding Waffle House. Supposedly, the chain restaurant was set to have a candle-lit, reservations-only dining experience for couples, but this will only be happening at a Charlotte location. Boone’s neighborhood Waffle House will operate as usual.

Besides the possibility of a little extra love coming through the door, “It’ll be busy just considering Sunday’s our busiest day,” manager David Riddleberger said.

So, if fighting the Sunday morning crowd isn’t an issue for any lovebirds out there, those hungry for breakfast food can go to Waffle House this Valentine’s Day. As an added bonus, the joint is open 24 hours.

For a taste of the east, couples may consider stopping by Mint, a restaurant that specializes in Indian cuisine. Manager Nidin Radra said the establishment will try to spice up the vibe by adding balloons, red napkins and a candle on each table.

The ethnic restaurant will be offering a meal for two for $45, as well as half-priced wine bottles.

Aside from these specials, the restaurant’s menu will remain the same. Mint’s menu accommodates for vegetarians and vegans, so it is perfect if your Valentine’s Day love extends to animals, as well. In addition to the standard menu options, Mint offers a Sunday brunch special that includes mimosas and a choice of chicken, lamb or other entrees for $13.

Mint will be open from noon to 3 p.m., closing and reopening for dinner service from 5-10 p.m. this Sunday.

Finally, King Street’s own upscale Southern restaurant, Vidalia, will be having a special reservation-only dinner for those who call ahead. The joint isn’t usually open on Sundays, but Valentine’s Day calls for special circumstances.

The restaurant will be offering a multi-course meal, featuring some Southern favorites with an upscale twist. This deal is $55 per person and includes the option of favorites like shrimp and grits, but also offers dishes like duck confit, bison and firecracker ice cream for those willing to step out of their comfort zone. These are just a few of the menu items that are accompanied by an optional wine pairing.

“After [the restaurant’s] expansion, some people said we lost our intimacy,” server Kayley Culbertson said. “This dinner will prove that wrong.”

Servers and staff are committed to personalized service and making this Valentine’s Day evening special, but don’t forget to call ahead to reserve a table.

These are only a few of the restaurants in Boone that offer specials for Valentine’s Day. Whether it is a first date, dinner with a long time partner or an evening alone, the best accompaniment for Valentine’s Day is good food.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO SPEND VALENTINE'S DAY

ouples are making reservations, buying stuffed animals and sending out flowers for Valentine's Day this weekend.

But not everyone likes the traditional dinner and a movie. Some people want to celebrate by doing things a little differently.

Students are trying to find ways to celebrate the day with loved ones, searching for something to do with friends or still haven’t found quite the right person to celebrate the holiday with. Here are some nontraditional ways of celebrating Valentine’s Day in Boone.

Valentine’s Special Workshop: Genus Dance Crew The Genus Dance Crew will be giving students an opportunity to go out and learn how to dance Friday night from 2-5 p.m. There will be a variety of classes for anyone who wants to participate in the Varsity Gym room 208A. There will first be a Latin dancing class from 2-3 p.m., a modern dancing class from 3-4 p.m. and will finish by hosting a reggae dancing class from 4-5 p.m. The event is free for all students, though donations are appreciated.

Roberto Bell, a sophomore dance studies major who is a member of the Genus Dance Crew, said that it was a relatively new club on campus that began in April 2015. The styles of dance they focus on include modern, jazz, cultural, hip-hop, line and majorette.

“We are portraying seductive dance in different styles,” said Belle. “It is great for connecting with your partner and exploring each other’s bodies. Plus, it’s fun.”

Sadie Hawkins Dance: Reformed University Fellowship For a more retro approach to celebrating Valentine’s Day this weekend, ladies are welcome to ask the guys to the Reformed University Fellowship’s third annual Sadie Hawkins dance on Feb. 12.

Brooke LaMachio, a freshman majoring in political science, said that she heard about the event at one of the RUF

meetings during their announcements.

She said that she has been taking dance classes with the Swing Dance Club and was looking forward to dancing and socializing with her friends from RUF. She has already found a date for the event. Though she said it was nerve wracking being the one to ask, she was excited because she got to get creative with how to ask him.

“I took a piece of poster board and cut it into four pieces, painted ‘Sadie Hawkins Dance?’ on each piece, hung them from the lights on my ceiling and then invited him into the room,” LaMachio said.

The Sadie Hawkins dance will be from 7:30-10:30 p.m. at the Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock.

Twice Upon A Prom: LGBT Center It’s time to dig out old high school prom dresses and wear them one last time before taking them to Goodwill.

The LGBT Center will be hosting its ‘Twice Upon A Prom,” a second chance for anyone to enjoy prom regardless of their sexuality, in the Solarium in the student union on Friday.

This is an opportunity for students to get their money’s worth out of that old dress sitting in the closet, to find the right date to enjoy the night with and to have all the fun that they had back in high school.

Formal wear is optional for this fairytale themed prom, and there will be a DJ, some light refreshments and a photo booth. The event will be partnering with the Vagina Monologues, and if students bring their tickets from the show, they will receive a free goodie bag at prom.

Students who are interested can sign up on the club’s website.

“It’s the first time we’re doing it,” said Casey Maslow, a junior majoring in psychology who works at the LGBT Center. “It is another chance because generally high schools don’t let students bring their [same sex] partners to prom.

It gives them a chance to wear what they want and bring who they want to bring.”

Don’t Hate, Speed Date: the Appalachian Rollergirls The Appalachian Rollergirls are there to help prevent anyone from being lonely on Valentine’s Day. The rollergirls will be hosting speed dating for all sexual orientations at Cafe Portofino on Sunday from 6-10 p.m. The event is for those 18 years or older and costs $10. Students can find information on how to RSVP by visiting the rollergirls website or the event facebook page.

Sarah Holt, one of the Appalachian Rollergirls who coordinated the event, said that the proceeds from speed dating would go towards the team’s home bouts.

Proceeds from the home bouts will go to a local charity.

“It’s a great way to spend Valentine’s Day because you’ll be spending it with the rollergirls. Quite a few have signed up to participate,” Holt said. “It’s great for single people and even people that are just interested in making new friends.

‘SAFE SPACES’ FOR DIVERSE RELATIONSHIPS

elationships can help set the tone for a college experience. In the haze of homework assignments, cumulative exams and looming deadlines, some students have still managed to find the time to form strong, meaningful relationships with their peers.

People of varying sexual, romantic, gender and social identities attend this university and are involved in various organizations and groups such as the LGBT Center, LIPS and the polyamorous community. Appalachian State has a number of “safe spaces” for students to form relationships with people on similar journeys of discovering who they are.

One “safe space” on campus is the LGBT Center. The center is one of “three student-led outreach centers” operated by the center for Multicultural Student Development, according to their online mission statement. The LGBT Center is designed to be a resource for lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender students and has evolved into a community inclusive to virtually anyone, sophomore English major and LGBT Center volunteer Ariel Green said.

The LGBT Center is open to all individuals who identify outside of heteronormative, as well as those who consider themselves to be an ally, which is a non-LGBT person who stands up for and supports the rights of LGBT people.

Green said that as a volunteer at the LGBT Center she has made some “really cool” friends, specifically Tuesday Feral, a graduate assistant she works with.

“It’s assumed that we all share similar values and experiences as far as LGBT rights and people who fall on the LGBT spectrum,” Green said. “That creates a unique bond and I feel like it brings us closer to each other because we don’t walk on ice regarding those issues.”

Amanda Lancaster, sophomore advertising major and someone who identifies as bisexual, said she recognized the challenges that come along with discovering her sexuality.

“It has been personally difficult because it is not something that is accepted by most of my family, so I have to lie about my sexuality to most of my family members,” Lancaster said.

It is also a challenge for her being in a relationship with a straight man, she said.

Green said relationships like the ones facilitated by the LGBT Center allow people to be open about similar experiences in a safe space.

“This is important for anyone, especially if you plan to move out of your comfort zone at any point in life,” Green said.

Green also said that having relationships with people of the LGBT community has helped her to develop a language that she can use to communicate with friends, especially her LGBT peers. For example, Green has learned to address her peers using proper pronouns.

Developing a language like this prevents things such as misgendering individuals, which means addressing someone using a pronoun that incorrectly represents the gender they identify with. Simply being aware of things such as these makes for healthier relationships between allies and LGBT people, Lancaster said.

Ariel doesn’t have special plans for Valentine’s Day, but Amanda plans to make her boyfriend a “Smite” themed card.

A far smaller but growing community of people who identify as polyamorous offer another perspective on relationships in the Appalachian community.

Polyamorous people are individuals interested in being in a loving, caring and respectful relationship with more than one consenting adult, Beth Fox, Appalachian alumna with a bachelor’s in sociology, said.

Fox said in a polyamorous relationship there is not a finite amount of love designated for a single individual.

A big misconception about these kinds of relationships is that they are purely sexual and non-committal, when in fact they involve a high level of commitment and communication, Fox added.

“Polyamorous people feel that one person cannot be everything, and that loving one person does not take away any love from another person,” she said.

What makes these relationships so strong is the effort put into honest, respectful communication between all parties. They allow individuals to express themselves in many ways with

more than one person, Fox said Fox, who has identified as polyamorous for over 20 years, has been in a relationship with one man for over 20 years and married to another for 10. She is also casually seeing someone as well, although it has not developed beyond friendship. For Valentine’s Day she and her husband plan to have dinner together.

Lauren Camacho, a Hispanic junior social work major, has been in a relationship with her boyfriend, who is an African-American, for a few months. As two people of color, neither of them ever considered their race to be an issue.

Though she and her partner haven’t had any negative experiences in terms of prejudice and discrimination from others while together, she said that is not the case for all interracial couples, which can be challenging.

“Some people have issues with things like disapproving parents or grandparents,” Camacho said. “It seems like with younger generations, it is slowly becoming less of a thing people dwell on.”

She also said that a relationship between people of separate ethnicities can be a special and intimate learning experience.

“It’s very intriguing and beautiful to be able to learn about other cultures and ways of life from someone you are that close to,” Camacho said.

Looking at life from a different perspective can be refreshing, and having a diverse group of friends can help people do that, Tatiana Eaves, junior biology major, said.

Regarding her friends, she said, “On off days, we just have a calm dinner and catch up. The six of us will have dinner, work things out together, and drink a few beers. We all support each other in every way possible.”

LIPS is an on-campus organization designed to create a space for gender and sexual minorities. LIPS fosters powerful relationships and a healthy network of support for strong, driven and unique women, Amelia Thomas, vice president of outreach for LIPS said.

“Strong friendships are super important, especially when you’re trying to discover things about yourself,” Thomas said.

Every identity is welcome in the group, but she said the majority of the current members are white, cisgendered females, or people whose experiences of their gender align with the sex they were assigned at birth. In some meetings, members share personal stories, which requires a certain degree of intimacy that she said strengthens the relationships they have with each other.

“I know that outside this space I always have someone that I can trust to care and go to for feminist advice,” Thomas said.

She plans to celebrate Valentine’s Day by having wine and dinner with her LIPS friends. She calls it an Anti-Valentine’s Day party.

Boone is a community comprised of people of all identities and all forms of relationships that are supported in “safe spaces” across different organizations at Appalachian.

SILENCE OF THE FANS OFTENTIMES THE HOLMES CENTER IS THE EMPTIEST PLACE ON CAMPUS DURING GAME DAYS

choes. Come to an Appalachian State Basketball game at the Holmes Convocation Center and that’s what you’ll hear. The echo of the ball bouncing, players yelling and the refs whistling. Not the roars, gasps, chants and boos that are typically associated with college basketball. Just echos.

Appalachian State University is the proud owner of college basketball’s 140th largest gymnasium, able to hold a respectable 8,325 people. For comparison, Duke University’s Cameron Indoor Stadium holds 9,314, just under a 1,000 more than Holmes.

Duke has recorded a sell out for every single basketball game they’ve played this season, meaning that all 9,314 seats were filled, and that includes games against little-known schools like Siena and Bryant.

Appalachian State on the other hand hasn’t had a sell out in the Holmes Convocation Center since 2000, when UNC Chapel Hill came to Boone for the first ever game at Holmes.

While it is ridiculous to even begin to compare Appalachian State and Duke’s basketball programs, it isn’t ridiculous to use Duke as the shining example of attendance, especially in comparison to a school whose average attendance at home games has only been above the conference average one time since the 2004-05 season, with that lone occurrence coming in 2007-08 campaign.

A lot of people will point towards the programs lack of recent success as the main reason for the low attendance, but the program experienced five winning seasons during the last decade, including a 25-8 campaign during the 2006-07 season, good for the highest win total in school history. Appalachian State actually won the regular season conference title four times during the last decade — the 02-03,06-07,07-08 and 09-10 seasons.

While the on-court product has dropped off recently, with the program not recording a winning season since the 2010-11 campaign, it still doesn’t explain the overall poor attendance since the turn of the century.

The move to the Sun Belt Conference, along with a poor record the past two seasons, might explain the recent decline in attendance, but it still doesn’t account for the overall trend that has developed in the last 15 years.

College basketball teams rely on the home crowd to produce the coveted home court advantage and to help bring the energy. There’s a reason that teams like Kansas and Duke rarely lose home games, and it definitely goes beyond talent.

Players and coaches are aware of this, and they know how hard it is to win on the road compared to at home, but for Appalachian State, playing at Holmes might as well be like playing on the road with the lack of crowd noise and energy.

Houston Fancher, now an assistant under Mark Price at UNC Charlotte, was the head coach of the Mountaineers for nine seasons from 2000-09. Fancher acknowledged the difficulty of playing in what feels like an empty gym, and how his players suffered because of it.

“We had to create our own atmosphere at home and you should never have to do that in your own gym,” Fancher said. “I remember a couple times coming out to warm up and it felt like my wife and our friends were the Houston Fancher only ones there.”

When current head coach Jim Fox first arrived in Boone in the spring of 2014, improving attendance was one of his goals.

“For the people in Boone, the season ticket holders, the alums, the boosters, everyone listening on the radio and everyone watching on App State TV, I need your help,” Fox said during his introductory press conference nearly two years ago. “I need you all to get behind us. I want to be the mayor of Boone by the time September rolls around.”

Needless to say that never happened, as the average attendance for home games during Fox’s first season was a paltry 1,130, more than 1400 less than the Sun Belt average.

Despite his team going 12-17 and being ineligible for postseason play, the blame can’t all be put on Fox, just like it can’t all be put on Fancher during his time here, or former coaches Buzz Peterson and Jason Capel.

The one group of people who can share the blame are the students. At Appalachian State University, any student with a valid AppCard is able to receive free admission into any home sporting event, and get their choice of seats at places like the Holmes Center.

While alumni aren’t exactly coming out in droves themselves, it is the students who are expected to cheer the loudest, show the most support and be at all the games. In a town with little to offer recreationally in the winter and a school with a beautiful gym that doesn’t have a bad seat in the entire building, where is everyone?

Some students will say that they don’t want to go watch a losing program, and while that may be the case, the team isn’t ever going to get any better without the support of the school’s students. Fox admitted to as much during his introductory press conference.

“I need the students,” Fox said. “I want to get out to the cafeteria and go to the fraternity houses. I want to go to the sorority houses. I want to meet as many people as possible. I want to get those students excited about our program. I told our players that I need them to get out there and get people excited about our program.”

It takes more than talent and coaching to build a winning program. Good recruits don’t want to come play in an empty gym, and players might not always give their all when there’s no one to see them do it. But that’s the case when the only noises to be found in the gym are echoes.

"I remember a couple times coming out to warm up and it felt like my wife and our friends were the only ones there."

A NEW ERA OF APP STATE CLUB LACROSSE

ou can forget what you’ve heard about college-level club lacrosse – the laid back, penny-wearing “bros” who are more excited for the after party than playing the game itself – because App State’s club lacrosse team is turning those stereotypes on their head in preparation for this season.

“It’s about having fun and playing lacrosse still, but it’s no more ‘We’re doing it because we love the sport but couldn’t play varsity,’” team president Grant Simpkins said. “It’s about winning.”

And while a stark change in culture is taking place within the ranks of this season’s team, it hasn’t always been that way, despite a similar cast of characters.

“My freshman and sophomore years were a complete mess,” Simpkins said.

“We’d have 15 guys at most at practices, some would come to games and we’d lose every game by what seemed like 30 goals.”

Simpkins' previous three years with the team have been defined by relative mediocrity. They’ve never even won their conference, the South Eastern Lacrosse Conference, let alone made the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association playoffs.

“It wasn’t even in the picture,” Simpkins said. “We’d come into the beginning of every fall and would be like ‘Alright, we’ve got a lot of talent, let’s do it,’ and then chaos would ensue over the next four months.”

But like success, failure also leaves clues. Prior to the arrival of head coach Angelo Acitelli among the team’s coaching ranks last season, there seemed to be a lack of focused direction.

Aside from the spotty attendance by teammates, practices were typically drawn while those who did show up were warming up. They wanted to compete, but lacked discipline — a component crucial to success in any team, regardless of sport.

Seeking to turn the tide on a team with extreme talent but little success, Acitelli, a former Division I defender at Bellarmine University in Kentucky, spent the offseason assessing his coaching strategies and seeking advice on ways to improve his team.

“After struggling with intensity last season, I actually sought advice from some college football coaches and a high school math teacher,” Acitelli said. “It turns out we couldn't achieve intensity because we were essentially trying too hard. You have to set the tone early with high speed drills, but still allow the players to be themselves and goof off from time to time.”

In addition to the outside help, Acitelli sought to surround himself with competent coaches who would buy into his defensive-minded coaching style.

He named Jordan Collier, a defenseman with whom Acitelli was familiar with from a former high-school level lacrosse club, the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. “A screw up happened on a man-down situation, and it’s easy to happen because you’re a man down and you’re playing zone, dealing with 6 guys against 5 on defense,” Collier said. “They literally just huddled up, I didn’t even walk over there or say anything because I knew what was happening and could hear what was being said, and it was the right stuff. It’s cool to see that.”

A year ago, this was a team that could barely get players to show up to games.

Now, following the weekend of their first game of the season, an 11-6 victory over Wofford on Super Bowl Sunday, the team bears little resemblance to the mediocrity of old.

“Everyone’s recognized that we’ve been good [in the past].” Simpkins said.

“I’ve had coaches approach me after games and tell us that we’ve been good, but we would just self-destruct when we faced face challenges. [If] we got down one goal in a game two years ago, the game was over. I just don’t see that happening with this team.”

And while the tell-tale signs of looming success are beginning to reveal themselves, the coaching staff knows their work is only just beginning. A full season against opponents such as Davidson and College of Charleston, among others, will provide a benchmark to measure their growth against.

“Culture takes time,” Collier said.

“You don’t just develop it overnight. You may put together a mission statement in one night, but to actually implement that and make it part of your values and culture as a team takes time.”

tepping onto the court at the empty Holmes Convocation Center, the voices of the App State men’s basketball team coaches can be heard over the pounding of the basketball and squeaking of sneakers.

After practice Lawson sat down for an interview.

“I’m tired,” Lawson said.

The 6-foot-8-inch, 237 pound forward had a right to be tired. Lawson, who is tied for the most shots blocked in the Sun Belt conference, didn't take the straightest path to where he finds himself today. After sitting out the entire 2013-14 season due to transfer rules, a result of his departure from Purdue University, Lawson described the 2014-15 season as himself getting back into the swing of things.

This season the power forward has doubled his production in nearly every category. Although his per game averages of 4.6 points and 3.5 rebounds are not mind-boggling numbers, Lawson has never cared as much about how many points a night he scores.

The Reidsville, North Carolina, native has earned his lunch money in a different way: by providing timely energy with emphatic rejections.

“Thats what I've been doing ever since middle school on up,” Lawson said. “I've always loved to block shots. I feel like it gets the crowd into to it and the players into it.”

Three quarters of the way through the season, Lawson has already eclipsed his block totals from the previous season with 39 blocked shots compared to 28

last season.

Though all defensive possessions do not end in blocked shots, Lawson's mere presence in the paint is enough to alter opposing players shot process.

“When they see me they're like ‘Should I throw it as high as I can?’” Lawson said. “Making them change up their shots in so many ways is helping my team.”

Lawson's athleticism and shot blocking ability was a huge draw for recruiters out of high school. According to App State Athletics, the dynamic big man led Northern Guilford to a North Carolina 3A state title in 2009 before helping lead Oak Ridge Military Academy to a 33-6 record. While attending Oak Ridge, Lawson posted an average of 14.5 points, 12.4 rebounds and 5.5 blocks per game as a junior. His game changing, two-way ability drew scholarship offers from Georgetown, Ole Miss, Seton Hall, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, but Lawson ultimately opted to sign with Purdue.

In the 3-point basketball culture of today's game, the prospect of an explosive big man who defends and plays with his back to the basket is an exciting one.

However, to borrow the Spiderman cliche, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Lawson's greatest strength coming out of high school was his athletic prowess, his high motor and an innate swagger about his game. Those qualities waned during his time in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Lawson never found his stride with the Boilermakers, averaging 2.3 points, 2.05 rebounds and only 11 minutes of action per game over his two seasons. The most telling stat, however, is the .65 blocks per game Lawson averaged during his time at Purdue. The man known above all else as a defensive enforcer was averaging less than a block a game. It was time for a change.

“I transferred to get closer to home,” Lawson said.

The 2 hour and 18 minute drive to Boone from Lawson's home in Reidsville, coupled with Lawson's reunion with App State players and former high

school teammates, Mike Neal, Jay Canty and Michael Obacha, made this a homecoming for the former Boilermaker.

After his transfer season, Lawson stepped right back into his role as shot blocking extraordinary.

During the 2014-15 season Lawson led the Mountaineers in blocked shots with 28 and his minute production increased to 13.1 minutes a game. Lawson is up to 15 minutes per game this season, and head coach Jim Fox has seen the value in the team's shot blocker.

“Having somebody who has the knack or instinct to block shots is something that helps our defense tremendously,” Fox said. “When Jacob puts his mind to it and commits to giving us that energy he is a heck of a player.”

Similarly, other players have seen his increased production and ability as a real asset to the Mountaineer’s success this season.

“His shot blocking and rim protection gives teams something to worry about,” sophomore forward Griffin Kinney said. "When Jacob plays well the team thrives off of it. When Jacob can produce stats all around like point, rebounds and blocks, it really gets the team going and it also gets the crowd going.”

The Mountaineers are 4-2 when Lawson blocks over three shots a game, and with their No. 44 ranked defense in 3-point field goal percentage in the country, it is imperative that when the opposing teams three ball fails, Lawson is waiting in the middle.

Lawson's emergence as a shot blocking force has been a silver lining in an otherwise disappointing season for the Mountaineers. There are many factors determining whether the Mountaineers can turn their season around, and whether it will happen is yet to be known. However, there are factors to the App’s season that are set in stone. If an opposing player drives down the lane looking to finish, waiting for them is the long outstretched arm of the Sun Belt's co-leading shot blocking menace ready to throw that ball into the rafters.

INDIE IS A BAD WORD

T

he Witness" is a game that puts players on a carefully crafted and beautifully rendered island with hundreds of thoughtful, intricate puzzles.

The game takes upward of 40 hours to complete, a long game by any measure.

Then why is it called an indie game?

“Call of Duty” is a game series that features recycled gameplay, swift campaigns and stale plot progression that can be completed in an afternoon.

Then why is it called an AAA game?

An indie game is defined as a game with little funding, a small team, an online-only release or a combination of the three. An AAA game, on the other hand, is described as being a big blockbuster production, similar in scope to movies in a theater.

These descriptions, though, are woefully outdated.

Before the 2000s, video games of commercial success were created by teams of people working on advanced computers over the course of years. The degree of difficulty in programming and computer engineering required to make games economically viable kept many people out of the industry, isolating ideas from the public.

In the last 10 years, however, the power of personal computing and the licensing of game engines has provided a software framework that removes the significant programming knowledge barrier to make games. Now, anyone with a computer and a passion can make their own game.

These new games were small in scope and not very impressive. They were called indie in reference to indie bands and movies that fill the same role of a smaller, more

“Minecraft” is the perfect example of an indie game.

Created by one man with simple textures, basic physics and rudimentary crafting mechanics, the game was hardly impressive. It was certainly a game that would have gone unnoticed 30 years ago.

But because Minecraft was able to be sold over the internet, it began to gain popularity and thus, bring in more money.

This money was used to improve and expand the gameplay mechanics and crafting elements – eventually becoming the game that Microsoft acquired the rights to for $2.5 billion.

For comparison, Disney bought the rights to Star Wars for $4 billion.

This overnight success isn’t typical of

an indie game, but shows the potential power of those deals.

The reason Minecraft is so popular is because it is so different from traditional AAA games. It offers something that no big name developer or publisher would dare create.

This is the true strength of indie games: the ability to create unique experiences that AAA games cannot deliver. This is why they have become rapidly popular in the last few years. Indie developers can get their games out to market without having to pay the traditional fees of publishers, and as a result indie games can be made more technically impressive and larger in scale.

This escalation of scale in indie games is what gives us “The Witness” and “Life is Strange,” games that are quite possibly the

best ones of the year. These games make players feel emotionally moved and deeply engaged much more than “Call of Duty,” yet are dubbed “indie.”

How can something so special be compared to those simple publicly made games that first coined the term? It is simply unjust.

Indie games are not just here to stay, but to thrive. As the differences between indie and AAA go away, so too will the differentiation between the words.

A term that was once lovingly given to aspiring game developers is now branded on projects to diminish their prestige. This needs to stop.

WE NEED COMMISSIONS FOR REDISTRICTING

T

his year was supposed to be the year when all the voter suppression efforts put in place by Republican policymakers came into effect.

This would be the first year that the new voter ID requirements went into effect, and it would be the second presidential election in which North Carolina was divided into the districts approved by Republican lawmakers.

Thankfully, some of this seems to be unraveling, at least for the moment. While the battle over the voter ID laws is still awaiting decision, a federal court has already struck down the districts approved by Republicans in 2010.

In the decision from the three-judge panel, Judge Roger Gregory said what has been obvious to most observers for some time: that North Carolina’s districts were drawn in ways that packed black voters into one district to minimize their voting power.

The court held the districts unconstitutional as “racial gerrymanders,” and ordered the legislature to put new district maps in place prior to the March 15 primaries.

Of course, there is always the chance that such a decision will be appealed, but for moment it is satisfying to see justice be done.

For years, observers have pointed to some of North Carolina’s oddly shaped districts as evidence of gerrymandering. North Carolina has three of the top 10 most gerrymandered districts in the nation, according to a 2014 Washington Post analysis.

The ruling is an important step, but it does not solve the real problem. Even with this ruling, the legislature will still have the job of redrawing districts.

Instead, we should work toward a system where political interests are taken out of this process. Voting, and especially the ability of citizens to have a meaningful effect on elections, is too important to be left to politicians.

Winning elections gives parties control over many things, but the fundamental right to vote should not be one of them.

Among the alternatives to the current system, the best option would be some form of independent commission that is responsible for drawing the new maps.

Six states have some form of commission for redistricting. While North Carolina was working hard to hold the title of most gerrymandered state in the nation, California was doing something different when it established a voting

commission which consisted of Republican, Democratic and unaffiliated voters who were to decide the district.

No scheme is perfect, but the one in California has apparently worked pretty well. A 2013 report by the League of Women Voters found that, while time constraints and limited resources were an issue, the process was more fair and transparent overall.

Of course, North Carolina will not likely adopt such a system, at least anytime soon. California’s system came about through that state’s initiative process, something our state does not have.

And I don’t see this general assembly, or even a more Democratic general assembly, moving in that direction.

That is, however, the direction we should be heading in. Drawing districts that satisfy the legal and social requirements is hard and there will likely be problems with whatever system we institute. In any case, voters will have recourse to the courts to settle controversies.

With that said, an independent commission marks a necessary shift in the way we draw districts.

Redistricting should not just be subject to the whims of politicians who have interests in the stakes. It should be about ensuring equality of representation and voter power, and independent commissions offer us a better way to achieve those goals.
