Examining a year of change through a first-year lens

From a hurricane to a new chancellor, this year has been one for the history books of App State. These abnormal occurrences impacted the freshman class, whose perspective on college life shifted over the 2024-25 school year.

Anika Pallaigar, a freshman psychology major, came into App State with feelings of both homesickness and wonder.

“Wow, college is like what it shows in ‘Pitch Perfect,’” she said, referring to the first time she stepped onto Sanford Mall.

Pallaigar chose App State because of its “low-key environment” and psychology program but discovered a community she could fit into.

“Just knowing one person is enough to know a whole bunch of people,” Pallaigar said.

The student body community around App State is a key feature of the university, and many students experience it within their first year.

This fall, however, the freshman class, along with the rest of App State, had to put their semester on hold. For three weeks, App State suspended campus operations, and many students

went home after Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina. October is considered a very important time for both the Boone community and first-year students, and the break ruptured the Boone population’s flow, said Andrew Lail, a first-year seminar professor.

Noah Cunningham, a freshman computer science major, related the shutdown from Hurricane Helene to the COVID-19 shutdown of 2020. Cunningham stayed in Mountaineer Hall during the extended break caused by Helene and described the campus as a “ghost town” due to the lack of people there.

For Cunningham, the social aspect of App State was what drove him to apply and attend. He said it was the type of people that drew him to Boone.

However, Cunningham said the hurricane impacted him on a limited scale. He was in an isolated state for a week during his fall break on campus and found himself more motivated than ever to make friends once students started returning.

“The hurricane taught me to get out of my comfort zone,” Cunningham said.

He said the hurricane did little to impact his academic year but it pushed

him to create a community for himself.

The three-week break due to Helene did not cause much of a negative academic impact on Lail’s class of first-year students, he said. The break provided time for students to adjust to the college environment, and many teachers — including himself — were accommodating.

However, the hurricane itself left a lasting emotional impact on many students, Lail said. The destruction Helene caused to both the environment and the Boone area struck many students, freshman or otherwise.

“How do you focus on school if you’re having to go home and pick up the pieces?” Lail asked.

After the fall semester ended and spring started, freshmen were keen to get back into their rhythm, Lail said. He described the spring semester as a time for first-year students to gain momentum into college life and figure themselves out.

From fall to spring, each semester is a different experience, Lail said. He said students in the fall are still figuring out their social life and academic work balance while navigating the unfamiliar campus.

“There is something so special about fall the freshman year,” Lail said.

Lail has been teaching at App State for around four years, focusing his first-year seminar class on social justice issues.

“I see the full process of freshman year,” Lail said.

Pallaigar and Cunningham both discovered their friend groups during the spring semester and rely on their social lives to push themselves.

As a season of change and growth, the spring allows students to expand upon their interests and community involvement.

“It’s really cool watching freshmen grow,” Lail said.

Walking the same halls: Nursing graduate finds purpose where brother died

As graduating App State students prepare to say goodbye to Boone, one senior nursing major finds herself beginning her career in the same place where she experienced a significant loss.

In January, Kirsten Hafkey was offered a new graduate position as a registered nurse at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist medical center —

the same hospital where her brother died a year prior.

Espen Hafkey, a 2021 App State psychology graduate, died on Feb. 17, 2024, of a fentanyl overdose.

On Feb. 11, 2024, Kirsten Hafkey received a call from her mother saying her brother had gone into cardiac arrest and was taken to the intensive care unit at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. She said she didn’t know how severe the situation was, but she traveled to Winston-Salem the next morning.

A few days later, the family learned he would not recover.

Espen Hafkey, born in December 1997, faced mental health challenges in recent years. Kirsten Hafkey has memories of sharing inside jokes and laughing with her brother.

Espen Hafkey loved music and was a passionate guitarist and drummer. Following his death, the Hafkey family partnered with the Arts Council of Winston-Salem & Forsyth County to accept donations in his honor for the Arts-in-Education Fund, which has served more than 31,000 students.

“That was such an integral part of his life, and that’s something that brought him more joy than anything,” Kirsten Hafkey said.

Kirsten Hafkey returned to classes and clinicals just days after her brother’s death and received support from her colleagues and instructors.

Alessandra Densham, a senior nursing major, first met Kirsten Hafkey in fall 2023. Densham said Kirsten Hafkey missed clinical one Friday, and she later learned what happened to her brother.

“I really just tried to treat her as normally as possible, and I made it clear to her that I was there to support her and if she wanted to talk about stuff, I’m here to talk to her,” Densham said.

Densham said the nursing program is fast-paced, making it difficult to take breaks to cope with losses, but their clinical instructor was highly supportive during the semester of her brother’s death.

Angie Koontz, a clinical instructor in the Department of Nursing, said she and Kirsten Hafkey developed a close bond during her time as her instructor.

“We don’t have to say anything to each other. All it takes is a smile, we just know how the other one feels,” Koontz wrote in an email. “We have this amazing, unbreakable bond.”

Another one of Kirsten Hafkey’s close friends, senior nursing major Madeline Keefer, said she felt connected to Kirsten Hafkey through shared experiences with personal loss. Keefer said she admired her resilience and how she continued to excel in her program despite the challenges she faced.

“She showed up to every single class, she showed up to every single clinical, and was fully present with patients,” Keefer said. Kirsten Hafkey began an externship at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in the summer of 2024. She was later hired as a part-time nurse’s aide before accepting the new graduate position working as a registered nurse in the Neurosciences ICU.

“It was really difficult, just like walking the same halls that I walked when he was a patient there, and I still sometimes kind of get brought back to that time,” Kirsten Hafkey said.

Having experienced the nursepatient relationship from a different perspective, she gained a deeper understanding of patients’ needs. While she is still navigating the grieving process, Kirsten Hafkey said she has become a stronger nurse and has grown more appreciative of her career path.

She is still inspired by the nurses who took care of her brother and plans to let her experience guide her nursing care for patients.

“When I’m caring for a patient who’s really sick, or just in a difficult situation, I’m like, this is my purpose, this is why I was meant to be in this situation,” Kirsten Hafkey said.

She highlighted the importance of addiction awareness and the growing presence of fentanyl in society. She said it’s important to look out for one another and ensure people have access to resources that can help.

“I’m grateful to be able to use something so devastating to help others. I think it would make Espen proud!” she wrote.

A year with Norris: Chancellor reflects on first term, shares goals for future

Just two weeks after she was named interim chancellor of App State in April 2024, Heather Norris decided to kick off her leadership position by throwing a pizza party for the student body.

Sanford Mall was crowded with students waiting in line for free pizza, with a particularly long line formed by those waiting to receive balloon animals.

Norris was officially named chancellor of App State effective March 1. She said during her first month as chancellor, she focused on reestablishing relationships, boosting morale with the App State community and reaching out to community partners to have productive conversations with them.

This latest achievement in Norris’ career was a long time in the making. According to her App State biography, Norris started working for App State in 2003 as an assistant professor in the Walker College of Business’ Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance. She served as the assistant dean for undergraduate programs, associate dean for undergraduate programs and administration, senior associate dean, acting dean and interim dean from 2005-15.

In 2016, she was appointed dean of the Walker College of Business and was appointed interim provost and executive vice chancellor in February 2020 and “assumed full responsibilities” in May 2021, according to her online biography. What some might not know, Norris

Norris said she would tell her younger self to take calculated risks, always think about the future and “be confident and bold.”

She would describe her leadership style as a servant leader, taking care to help others around her achieve success. She said she strives to ensure students, faculty and staff have support and the required resources to achieve their goals and success, all while allowing for the opportunity for personal connections within the university. Norris said this creates a sense of community, whether that entails walking around campus or eating meals with her leadership team in the dining hall.

She believes many people are surprised to learn that over 21,000 students attend App State. She said this may be due to the culture and commitment to care from faculty members who work one-on-one with students.

“It’s one of the things that brought me here, and keeps me here,” she said.

Being chancellor, however, does not come without challenges. When Hurricane Helene struck Boone in late September, Norris, who was serving as interim chancellor, described the storm as a “crisis of epic proportions.”

“We had to get creative with that, but we persevered,” she said. “We made sure we were pushing out information and receiving information.”

By having emergency preparedness exercises set in place, App State, under Norris’ leadership, was able to offer resources to the community by continuing to house students in residence halls, provide free meals to students and the community in the dining hall and open their doors to the American Red Cross and offer resources to students through the Disaster Resource Hub.

“We learned a lot through caring about our community and having conversations,” she said.

As for her plans regarding App State’s future, Norris said she remains committed to offering both academic and programs outside of the classroom that allow students to achieve success.

She said programs such as the Hickory campus and Project Kitty Hawk are helping provide high-quality education to North Carolinians.

“For me, it just goes back to student success. You probably will hear me say that a lot, because that really is at the core of why I do what I do each and every day,” Norris said. “It’s why I first wanted to go into higher education, because I care about students and their success.”

As provost, Norris said she worked with JJ Brown, the vice chancellor of student affairs, to establish a student advisory committee made up of

students from different academic colleges. She said this allows her to better connect with the student body. Norris ended her first semester as chancellor the same way she started her first semester as interim: by throwing a pizza party on April 28.

“I want to do a lot of that celebrating with you, but I also want to hear, ‘What are the things we can improve? How can we help more, what can we do better?’” she said.

“So I appreciate the open dialogue and the opportunities to have those conversations through those student leaders and those groups.”

Graduates face uncertainty in career outlooks per Trump administration

Since President Donald Trump’s inauguration, executive orders and policy changes have affected numerous job sectors. From hiring freezes and budget cuts to limitations, as the class of 2025 prepares to enter the workforce, those with plans to enter impacted fields are now faced with uncertainty.

The Appalachian spoke with May graduates who are either planning to enter a now changing field or once had plans in doing so.

Education

According to U.S. News & World Report, education is the second most popular major at App State as of 2023. However, the field faces uncertainty under the Trump administration. On March 20, Trump signed an executive order which aims

so it’s “not a new concept” to her. However, the Trump administration has her worried going forward.

Horvath, who has been student teaching since January, teaches middle school history and fears potential changes to the curriculum.

“I definitely do worry that moving forward there’ll be some new regulations within the Department of Education being dismantled and all that stuff that’ll prohibit me from being able to tell my kids about history as it has happened,” Horvath said.

At the start of his second term, Trump signed the Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12

Schooling executive order, which aims to restrict schools from teaching topics such as racism, white privilege, among others, while also promoting patriotism.

Horvath said new policies on topics like immigration are also affecting students, noting that some have asked whether or not U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would show up to the classroom.

“There’s nothing you can tell a 12-year-old that will comfort them when they’re worried about that kind of thing,” Horvath said.

“They’re kids; they shouldn’t have to worry about that.”

As changes continue, Horvath said she tries to be careful when teaching current issues and be as nonpartisan as possible. However, she doesn’t want to be so nonpartisan that children impacted by the administration can’t come to her.

Although hopeful she and her friends will find jobs amid the teacher shortage, there is no telling what those jobs will look like.

“The overwhelming fear is not, ‘Will I be able to get a job?’ or, ‘Will I be

able to have a secure job?’” Horvath said. “Instead, ‘Will I be able to do my job the way I know it needs to be done?’”

by numerous outlets from around the world.

Murns said restricting any kind of media is a bias “in and of itself” and covering only what Trump and the administration wants to show is an “unrealistic version of history.”

“It’s scary people out there don’t want us to know the truth,” Murns said.

Although the news media industry faces restrictions and censorship, Murns, who remains passionate about the industry, said “I will not sacrifice my morals.”

Nonprofit Work

Nonprofits have felt the Trump administration’s impacts in multiple facets.

Journalism

In 2017, Trump called the news media the “enemy of the American People,” in a post on X. In 2025, his administration is taking new steps to control and restrict the media.

Ella Murns is a senior communications studies major who is going to the University of Georgia for a master’s degree in journalism. She said she has a lot of anxiety and has been “questioning a lot recently.”

“I’m terrified of the future of the media,” Murns said.

Before Trump took office, her outlook toward the career was more optimistic. Since then, much has changed.

Journalists across the country are being met with limitations on what they cover. In late February, the White House announced it would only allow a rotation of select news outlets to be a part of the press pool.

On April 8, U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden ordered the White House to lift the restrictions on AP, according to Reuters, amid lawsuits between AP and the Trump administration.

On April 15, the administration said three major wire outlets, including The Associated Press, would have limited spots in the press pool. AP’s wire service articles are published

One graduate student receiving a master’s in public administration with a concentration in nonprofit

“So hiring new positions when you don’t know if you’re going to have the grant funding to continue to fund those positions is not something, like a risk, that a lot of nonprofits are able to take right now.”

Sanders said six months ago she definitely saw herself working for a nonprofit. Now, she has had to pivot her job search and is looking into for-profit organizations and consultation work “rather than just doing what I would like to do,” given the competition in the market.

Several nonprofits fall under agencies in the government. With thousands of government jobs being cut, any job under an agency is at risk.

“The federal government for the longest time had the reputation of being kind of the safe field to get a job in,” the graduate student said.

This is no longer the case.

Environmental Sciences

“Science is not really a thing this administration likes at all,” senior environmental geology major Cait Kinnamon said.

In his second term, Trump has enforced thousands of federal layoffs, and the Environmental Protection Agency plans to lay off thousands more scientists and cut scientific research funding for scientists, universities and more.

Kinnamon said if a scientist or institution disagrees with the administration about issues like climate change or diversity, equity and inclusion, it is an “agree or you’re not gonna get your funding” situation.

Kinnamon, who will be attending graduate school, said many places she would have applied to for graduate school no longer receive scientific funding. Though she said she will be in school for a few more years, after that, “it’s gonna get really interesting.”

“Any research field is definitely gonna suffer,” Kinnamon said.

In April, Trump signed two executive orders which aim to boost coal mining. Though mineral, oil and gas industries are seemingly protected, the same cannot be said for other areas.

Sam Mowen is a senior environmental geology major who worked for the U.S. Forest Service in the past — an agency she had plans to work for that has been notably impacted by layoffs.

“I have credits that allow me to apply for internal jobs, and they don’t matter anymore,” Mowen said. “That was mostly the jobs that I had applied to.”

She said she feels discouraged about graduation because, despite her passion toward the environment and what she does, the industry is not supported by the current administration. When she found out the jobs she had applied for were eliminated, for her it was “starting at square one again.”

Although “nobody is certain” on what will happen in her field, Mowen reminds herself that “the current administration is not forever.”

Social work

“After graduation I wanted to either work for or develop an organization designed to support LGBTQ+ youth as well as go into the mental health field,” graduate social

work student Olivia Weaver wrote.

“With the Trump administration, I don’t feel like that’s possible right now because of policies regarding this population.”

Under the Trump administration, several moves have been made regarding the LGTBQ+ community such as restricting gender-affirming care for youth, eliminating funding for health research, removing LGBTQ+ protections for students and more, all of which are “isolating a vulnerable population,” Weaver wrote.

Though some policies such as the “Don’t Say Gay” bills — bills restricting discussion surrounding LGBTQ+ topics in classrooms — were created and passed in states prior to the current administration, Weaver wrote, “The Trump Administration is essentially making discrimination legal for this.”

“Adults, such as social workers and educators, are not allowed to discuss issues concerning being in the LGBTQ+ community,” she wrote.

In some instances, such as in North Carolina, administrators and educators are to notify a child’s guardians if they wish to go by a different name or pronouns or disclose their sexual orientation. She worries this may increase mental health struggles and homelessness among youth.

“While many educators do not wish to break their students’ trust or make their home life more unsafe than it already may be, they do not have much of a choice in situations such as this,” Weaver wrote.

Farmers market returns for first season since Hurricane Helene

After reconstruction efforts from Hurricane Helene, local farmers were back at the Watauga County Farmers’ Market April 5. The market holds its annual spring opening every April with vendors from all over Western North Carolina.

“A lot of our vendors are still in recovery from the hurricane,” said Michelle Dineen, the market director. “They need the community’s support now more than ever.”

Six months ago, farmers in the Western North Carolina area were devastated by Hurricane Helene and many struggled to continue producing and selling their goods, facing destruction of property, a reduction of crops and general loss due to the storm.

Ever since its first season over 50 years ago, the market has operated

from 8 a.m. until noon each Saturday morning, from April to November.

The market was nearing the end of its 2024 season when everything halted.

The market, according to Federal Emergency Management Agency regulations, had to quickly move from its main location, Daniel Boone Park, to the parking lot of Leon Levine Hall in the weeks after Helene’s landfall.

The new location along with the wreckage following the hurricane caused many farmers to miss out on income, Dineen said.

The market’s sudden pause last season was a loss for local attendees, but a necessity for the well-being and continuity of the market, especially farmers and harvesters of local products who rely on weather, climate and local farmers markets to make a profit.

At this year’s opening, there were over 60 vendors, many of which had to drop out of the 2024 season. There is expected to be a greater push toward local farmers and shop owners this year due to a rise in community engagement since Helene, Dineen said.

“There’s both a community and culture within the vendors, we know each other and have relationships,” said James Wilkes, a computer science professor at App State and a honey bee farmer.

Wilkes has been operating his stand, Faith Mountain Farm, for 20 years and has seen the market mature over the years. He sells a variety of honey, granola, baked goods, vegetables and cut flowers.

“This is a very robust, mature market in terms of quality,” Wilkes said.

Another popular vendor from the market is Fermenti, a fermented food and goods company based in Asheville and Marshall with farms in both locations.

Started by Meg and Lars Chamberlain, the pair has been fermenting and selling their own jarred and packaged products since 2017. Fermenti offers products such as kimchi, sauerkraut, fermented lemons and salsa. They also offer a variety of salts and seasonings for food to make at home.

Fermenti’s Marshall farm suffered significant damages from Helene and their production facilities lost several batches of product, resulting in immense production and financial losses. Despite their losses, Meg Chamberlain said the support the company received from the

community of Boone was truly lifechanging.

“We have a deep gratitude towards the Boone community,” Meg Chamberlain said. “The support was exactly what we needed when we needed it.”

Avery Hughes, owner of High Country Fungi, has been working with the market for five years and sells mushroom products alongside his partner.

For a lot of local vendors, the biggest month for sales is October, Hughes said. With the impact of Helene, a lot of the diverse market stalls had to roll back which caused them to lose money. Many of these vendors, Hughes said, are still working to bounce back from the storm.

Hughes described the community of the market as “very tight-knit, especially post-Helene.”

From left, owner of Faith Mountain Farms James Wilkes and his daughter sell honey, baked goods, flowers and vegetables at the Watauga County Farmers’ Market on April 5. Photo by Jackson Hornback

“It’s been reaching out to folks and folks reaching out to us and helping in any way we could,” Hughes said.

There has been a noticeable shift toward local vendors post-Helene, Hughes said. Many people are buying local goods now more than ever since it builds up the community. This shift has created a sense of solidarity among the buyers and sellers of the market, Hughes said.

“Hopefully with the impact that Helene had locally that people will realize the importance of local food,” Hughes said.

Devin Lacey, owner of Booze and Bouquets Flower Farm and Floral Design, said he has a deep appreciation for the Boone community and wants to continue to sell his products at the Watauga County Farmers’ Market for as long as he can.

Booze and Bouquets is a local florist company with plots located in Watauga and Caldwell counties. Although their business mainly caters toward weddings, the company has been a vendor ever since joining the market’s 2012 season.

An App State alum, Lacey fell in love with all things horticulture in the Watauga area and cultivated a space in Boone where people can buy local flora at an affordable price, a price that has not changed in the past six years.

“It’s about spreading joy and seeing people walk away happy with my product,” Lacey said.

Lacey said he is thankful to report that while his floral plots sustained water damage and plants fell over during the hurricane, no other critical damage was done.

“I feel very lucky to have scathed by with very minimal damage, compared to most,” Lacey said.

While plenty of stands have vendors trying to sell products to customers, not all booths sell products, such as the Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture’s stand.

BRWIA is a nonprofit organization that assists all locals in sustainably accessing quality produce in Boone and the surrounding areas.

BRWIA also offers its Double Up Food Bucks program, a food-based incentive that “doubles the value of federal nutrition benefits spent at farmers’ markets,” according to BRWIA’s website.

The program’s coordinator, Sydney Blume, emphasized the importance of a program like this existing in Boone, and how it not only connects people to ethical produce consumption, but also with local farmers and growers.

“People often see local food as this luxury, and we really don’t want that to be the case,” Blume said. “We think that farmers market food should be more accessible to everyone, and this is one way we can get closer to doing that.”

Blume said the BRWIA staff prepared for the hurricane’s impact before Helene, and open communication and utilizing teamwork with staff and local farmers was the key to success in the future of the Double Up Food Bucks program.

“We are reflecting on, and so grateful for the networks that we had in place in order to respond more rapidly,” Blume said.

Going the distance: graduate student breaks records for App State

In June of 2024, graduate student distance runner Ethan Turner emailed men’s distance coach Brad Herbster in hopes of a tryout. In his own words, the tryout was the worst he had ever run.

Fast forward 10 months, and Turner has not only broken records but set himself up to qualify for postseason running in his lone Division I season.

While he was born in England, Turner and his family have lived in Boone since he was in high school. He was initially drawn to soccer rather than running but found his true passion midway through his high school years.

“I did soccer in the fall and track in the spring, but I thought I’d have a better chance at being a varsity athlete running track,” Turner said. “My first time running was just a great atmosphere. Teammates were great to be around and I learned a lot of from them.”

Even though he’s lived in the High Country, attending App State as a graduate student has given Turner a different outlook on the area.

“I’ve been able to settle in pretty easily,” Turner said. “I’ve been enjoying my grad program which I’ll finish up this summer, and it’s just a good place to live.”

After he graduated from Watauga High School, Turner went on to UNC-Chapel Hill for his bachelor’s degree in statistics. Both of his parents, Michael and Catherine Turner, are history instructors at App State, so education has always been Ethan Turner’s priority.

Ethan Turner joined UNC’s running club and continued to find passion in running. The running club at UNC is similar to club sports at App State; they practice two to four times a week and compete against other schools’ clubs, but athletes are not associated with the NCAA.

“I was very pleased that he was able to find an outlet, find people that he wanted to run with and get himself up and motivated,” Catherine Turner said. “Being a part of a club team is not the same as being a part of the team here. You know, having a coach

and someone who looks after you. He put a lot of it on himself.”

During Ethan Turner’s time in the running club at UNC, he met Josh Marson, his future roommate and president of the running club. Ethan Turner and Marson immediately hit it off and became great friends during their time together.

“He’s super goofy. Like, within the first two weeks of meeting him, he had a nickname for everyone on the team,” Marson said. “He would go on Strava and make posts about us and I just found it super funny. My nickname was Life Coach Josh, which I guess was because I was giving a lot of life coach advice at the time, but it was cool seeing what story you’d appear in in the next Strava post.”

Strava is a running and cycling app that allows you to track your longdistance trips while also making posts like Instagram to connect with your friends.

Running in the club team at UNC allowed Ethan Turner to find a lot of success. He became a two-time National Intercollegiate Running Club Association All-American, 2024 NIRCA 5K Outdoor National Meet runner-up and played a part in the club’s NIRCA Southeast Regional Cross Country title in 2023.

“He’s one of those guys where you watch the way he runs and the way he trains, and you think to yourself, ‘There’s got to be more for this guy,’” Marson said. “I have, in no means, any experience in coaching, no experience with knowing what a good runner looks like, but there’s something about Ethan that gives people the idea that he can do something special.”

The drive Marson saw in Ethan Turner caused him to push Turner to try out for a Division I program. Ethan Turner eventually reached out to the coach at App State via email to try and get a tryout and, a couple of weeks later, he was in Boone for a workout.

“Before I even trained with the team, I ran the first cross country meet unattached,” Ethan Turner said. “It was embarrassing, and I thought I had no chance, but I guess they saw something, and I’m here now.”

Ethan Turner made the most of his lone year at App State, finishing No. 10 at the Sun Belt Championships in the fall and capping off that semester with a ninth-place finish at the Firetower Project Run 8k in Boone. Turner’s second semester kicked off to a phenomenal start as he placed first in both the Virginia Tech Invitational and the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge in the 3000-meter races.

Turner’s 8:21.76 broke a school record in the 3000-meter by nearly seven seconds. The original time of 8:28.70 was marked back in 1998.

“He didn’t tell us he broke the record, we found out ourselves,” Michael Turner said. “He’s not a very self-promoting type of person. We are very proud but not very surprised because he works very, very hard at everything he does. Sometimes, I think he’s got a screw loose the way he gets laser focused.”

Past the meets and races, Ethan Turner knows that every time he puts on Black and Gold, he’s representing much more than himself.

“Being given a spot, then being given the opportunity to progress and a spot on a team and meeting some really great people, it’s a source of pride,” Ethan Turner said.

Sejal Neas’ time in the circle comes to a close

Senior pitcher Sejal Neas almost decided to never put on the Mountaineer uniform. Neas grew up wanting to play basketball and volleyball, until her love for pitching took over.

“I struggled to find my place in softball when I first started, but then when I was like 10, I started pitching and I was like, this is my thing,” Neas said.

Even after discovering her passion for softball, she did not see App State as her future home. Neas grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee, and spent time visiting her family’s cabin in Linville which she said created negative feelings about the area. However, she grew to love it.

“I didn’t wanna come to App State,” Neas said. “It’s too cold, too gross and too rainy. Which is funny, because I can’t get away from it now.”

Even with the transfer portal as an option, Neas never considered jumping ship and decided to ride out her four-year collegiate career with the Mountaineers.

“I have a bunch of sisters on the team, and I couldn’t imagine myself pitching at another place ever,” Neas said. “App is just a special place with special people.”

Before her time in Boone, she played high school softball at Science Hill High School, where she was a two-way player. Neas’ high school career was full of strikeouts and home runs. However, she would choose to pitch full-time at the next level.

Neas found instant success in her role, despite the initial shock of playing college ball.

“I remember my first Sun Belt game was against ULM, and I was like, ‘OMG, this is no joke,’” Neas said.

The Mountaineers defeated the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 6-3 in 2022. Neas faced 5 batters, striking out 1 and allowing 0 runs, recording the save.

Neas saw action 26 times as a freshman and recorded 40 strikeouts and a 3.01 ERA.

As a sophomore in 2023, Neas recorded her first win against a ranked opponent, beating No. 23 Louisiana 5-3 in Lafayette. The victory came after they lost the first two games of the series by a combined score of 12-0.

Neas started the game on the mound and went on to pitch the first 6 innings.

“We’d already lost two games in the series, what the heck do we have to lose? So we just went out and played so free, it was so much fun,” Neas said.

Capitalizing on this win, Neas recorded 59 strikeouts in her sophomore season.

She took a big leap in her junior season, recording 116 strikeouts, the sixth most in program history.

Neas said her philosophy for pitching is very simple: “Just come out acting like you’re the best one out there.”

The confidence she and the coaching staff have in her helps Neas to compete at the highest level.

The coaching staff added Alex Ibarra as the pitching coach before the 2025 season. Ibarra and Neas learned to work together throughout the season.

One of the things they worked on was Neas’ development of the rise ball. The rise ball uses backspin, forcing the ball to travel upward, as the name suggests. Neas was predominantly a drop ball pitcher, which uses topspin and causes the ball to fall.

“I think the coolest thing is her development of the rise ball that she had this year,” Ibarra said.

He understands the challenge of trying to develop a new pitch as a senior with a new coach. Despite recording the most strikeouts of her career as a junior, Ibarra still suggested adding it.

Looking back on her development of the pitch, Ibarra applauded her ability to stay focused and conquer the rise ball, adding it to her arsenal.

As Neas’ time on the mound comes to a close, those around her reflect on her time at App State.

“It’s been a pleasure working with Sejal,” Ibarra said. “She had to overcome a lot working with a new pitching coach.”

Ibarra also admires the way Neas carries herself on the mound.

“She’s feisty. I know she wants to win, and I know that comes out on the field,” Ibarra said. “She is always looking to get people out as fast as possible, which is really good.”

Neas’ presence is not only felt on the field. Junior pitcher Sophie Moshos transferred to App State at the beginning of the 2025 season and said Neas made her feel welcome.

“She’s definitely been a role model for me on and off the field, and I’ve looked up to her since I’ve gotten here,” Moshos said.

Neas is known to joke around when it is not game time, maintaining a good environment and keeping the bullpen on their toes.

“She cracks a lot of jokes that I just don’t expect,” Ibarra said. “Sometimes that kind of catches me off guard, but she is really funny.”

Moshos couldn’t agree more.

“She keeps things fun and she always makes us laugh,” Moshos said.

Neas will graduate in May with a degree in exercise science. With her time wearing Black and Gold coming to a close, she isn’t taking anything for granted.

“I’m trying to be in the moment, just soak up every single bit of my senior year,” Neas said.

Mountaineer freshmen shine early in college careers

Standout freshmen are staples of college sports, and App State had no shortage of them this year. Three of these freshmen have stood out during this time, but they each had different paths to the High Country.

Stephan Monchery: Wrestling, Heavyweight

Stephan Monchery wasn’t originally supposed to go to App State. The New York native was committed to the University of Buffalo, but he decommitted when they underwent a coaching change. App State was looking for a heavyweight, and it turned out to be a good fit, so Monchery committed.

Monchery wasn’t guaranteed to be a starter for the

Mountaineers, and he wasn’t for the first duel of the year against NC State. Despite this, he eventually earned the role and proceeded to blow everyone’s expectations out of the water.

Monchery went 19-11 on the season and 7-1 in Southern Conference duels, playing a key part in the Mountaineers winning a share of the regular season conference championship.

His role only became more important in the conference tournament. Monchery ran the table and won the final with a clutch reversal to seal a conference championship for himself and the team, the only Mountaineer to win an individual conference title at the

Leah Gore: Softball, Catcher

Leah Gore has been coming to the High Country for years. Her family has a condominium in Blowing Rock, and she came up here many times when she was younger.

“When I came on my visit, it just kind of felt like home,” Gore said.

Head softball coach Whitney Jones got to know Gore at a game before she came to Boone and liked her competitive spirit.

“I remember after the game talking to Leah and she was like, ‘Yeah she just got me on that changeup,’” Jones said.

Gore brought this competitive spirit with her to Boone and put a

Monchery also sealed a berth to the NCAA Tournament, where he lost both his matches but showed great promise in qualifying.

“Part of what makes him successful is he doesn’t get too high or too low,” head coach JohnMark Bentley said. “He’s just got a very even-keeled personality.”

Monchery’s goals for the future are simple.

“I want to make it back to the NCAA Tournament and AllAmerican,” Monchery said.

Tyler Lichtenberger: Baseball, Shortstop

Tyler Lichtenberger committed to App State before he stepped foot on campus.

His friend, freshman utility player Riley Luft, had told Lichtenberger good things about the university and coaching staff, so he reached out.

“It just clicked right away,” Lichtenberger said. “I was like, a couple of phone calls with coach Smith and I committed on the spot right when I got my offer.”

Lichtenberger struggled with the transition to college at first as he likes to have a routine, but he credits the coaches with creating a “family environment,” which made his transition easier.

He didn’t expect to start coming into the season, but he got an opportunity and made the most of it.

As of April 27, Lichtenberger led the team in hits and batting average, hitting 2 homers, 32 RBIs and posting a .955 on-base plus slugging.

This has been enough to earn himself national recognition, including

being named Second Team Freshman All-American by Perfect Game alongside his high school teammate James Litman, a pitcher for Florida Atlantic.

Despite this, he’s still focused on improving, especially on defense. To remind himself of this, he keeps a social media post criticizing his defense as the lock screen on his phone.

lot of pressure on herself, but the transition was challenging, and she didn’t necessarily play against the best high school competition.

Despite this, Jones knew Gore would have a chance to carve out a role in her first year.

“We had some conversations in the winter that a lot of freshmen weren’t gonna get to be freshmen this year,” Jones said. “We were gonna need people to kind of come in and fill in some roles, and Leah accepted that challenge.”

Gore has stepped up to that challenge and as of April 27 has 45 hits with 8 homers and 30 RBIs while posting a batting average of .304 and

on-base plus slugging of .888.

This is despite Gore moving to left field for a large portion of the season, away from her natural position at catcher.

This start makes Jones think there are big things for Gore in the future.

“The future is so bright, I mean you’re literally a freshman and you’ve gotten so much experience and you’ve had so much success already,” Jones said. “So just to keep building off that is like really exciting for her, for our program and just the future of App State softball.”

Leah’s Lens: Another day, another presidential disappointment

Within recent months of his second term, President Donald Trump and his administration have revoked over 1,500 student and faculty visas, one of which belonging to an App State student.

While none of Trump’s heinous decisions seem too surprising at this point, they are still despicable.

According to the New York Times, the Trump Administration has since restored the legality of many student visas, though a Department of Homeland Security official said students could still have their status terminated in the future.

The revocation of visas in and of itself is morally and politically wrong — to strip someone of their education crosses yet another line. But, as Trump has proven time and time again, education is the least of his priorities.

International students play an incredibly important role in the United States higher education program, accounting for 1.1 million college and university students across the country, according to The Associated Press. They contribute to the job market and the overall economy, promote diversity and inclusion, aid in research advancements and provide countless other benefits to the U.S. education system.

Though the U.S. has its fair share of problems, it has been ranked No. 1 in education for multiple years in a row by U.S. News & World Report, making it a prime location for international students to learn in a way they may not be able to otherwise.

Not only do international students benefit from the education opportunities in the U.S., international student programs also provide U.S. students opportunities to experience diversity and expand their horizons. At a predominantly white institution such as App State, the diversity, intellect and ideas that international students bring are a key ingredient in a rich campus life.

Trump has already shown his

disregard for diversity by abolishing diversity, equity and inclusion programs nationwide and even threatening to stop funding public universities if they refuse to pull DEI initiatives.

Trump doubled down specifically on international students involved in pro-Palestine protests and movements on college and university campuses, defending it with the extreme claim that these individuals were all “pro-Hamas.” He has even gone so far as to revoke green cards from student protestors — a gross misuse of his power.

Throughout the first few months of his presidency, Trump and his administration have made one thing clear — their priorities are ridiculously off base.

A prime example of this is Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, stating she would not take reporters seriously who include pronouns in their email signatures. Pair this with Trump’s executive order essentially saying gender identity is invalid, and you’ve got the first of millions in a cacophony of close-minded, ignorant takes.

Regardless of the Trump administration’s ulterior motives and utter disregard for those who aren’t straight, white men, there is still hope for the country. There were thousands of “Hands Off!” protests across the nation, including one in Boone with over 1,400 participants protesting Trump, Elon Musk and their attempts at dictatorship.

It is an extremely uncertain time in the nation, especially for those who are at risk of being kicked out of their homes out of pure racism and spite. It can be difficult to see the bright side during times like this, but one thing remains abundantly clear: nobody is going down without a fight.

Whether it is Bernie Sanders making a surprise appearance at Coachella, Cory Booker’s recordbreaking Senate speech or multiple Democratic political leaders speaking out against Trump’s regime, it is clear nobody has given up, and more importantly, nobody will.

When it comes to writing stories, I unintentionally write up until the deadline. I intentionally finished writing this piece at 4:27 a.m. the day of deadline with tears in my eyes. I held off as long as possible to write this piece — my final piece for The Appalachian ever.

Walking into the newsroom freshman year in August 2021, I knew I wanted to be a reporter. I was ready to learn about and serve my community. Who would have thought that joining The Appalachian would become my most rewarding experience?

Since then, I’ve served as Editor-inChief for two years, interviewed and met amazing people, written hundreds of articles and edited thousands more, seen the creation of the first-ever Hispanic Heritage Month

Who would have thought? Rediscovering myself

Editor’s note: This column contains mention of overdose and drug use.

Ihada good friend named Nick — I called him Nikki. He had a wide smile and a hearty laugh that I can’t hear in my head anymore. I listen to old videos to hear it now. Nick died in 2022 from an overdose after being accepted to UNC-Wilmington. He is part of the reason I am who I am today.

I began using drugs at the age of 15 and by the time I reached my senior year of high school, it had ripped through my meticulously scheduled life plan. In my passions, friendships, family and academics, I stripped myself of the ability to care. App State was the only college I was accepted into, and at that moment, facing so many rejections, I felt like I had completely given up.

special section, helped plan a 90th anniversary event and more. I found my place and my passion.

And how could I leave out the election nights, long and delirious PDF nights, crying-laughing moments and, of course, the infamous UNO matches?

None of those experiences would be possible without my amazing support system, family, friends and team. Though I can’t list every name of who has played a role in keeping me or this paper going, you know who you are. Thank you. I love you more than words can express.

To my former editors, I’m grateful for your guidance. To my amazing Ed Board(s), staff members and advisers, thank you for sticking with me and for your hard and incredible work. It’s been a pleasure working with you all.

Never stop doing what you do, as your work and dedication to the community does not go unnoticed.

For those who supported me and The Appalachian over the years, thank you. Please continue to support student journalism. They do it all for you.

Who would have thought that leaving this paper and community would be so difficult? Thank you for allowing me to serve you.

And as I did so often when looking through the morgue, I looked through the names of those who came before me and got inspired. I hope someone one day will do the same when they see my name in the paper.

But I got sober. I forced myself to care again, even though I lacked the dopamine to physically feel it. I put myself out there over and over again, joining the orchestra, taking ballet classes and meeting new people. Finally, I found The Appalachian.

It was in this newsroom, surrounded by these people, that I found myself again. It was here that I felt endless support.

It was through countless interviews with locals, police officers, protestors, students, professors and more that I rediscovered the power of having a passion and really, truly caring about something.

Journalism, the power of storytelling, is my newfound calling. To all the people who helped me discover it — inside and outside the newsroom — I am forever grateful.

To Nikki, I think about you every day. You were the person that pushed

me to come to App State, to college in general. I miss you. Every time I am scared to put myself out there, I emulate you: your compassion, spunk and endless enthusiasm. Wherever you are, I hope I made you proud.

How an alpaca took over my college life

Ifell in love with this organization on a chilly March day, trudging back to my freshman dorm after a midafternoon class. I was thinking about taking a cozy midday nap when a sudden realization jolted me awake — the newspapers had been released that day. As I crossed the skywalk, I spotted the newsstand at the end and made a beeline for it.

At first glance, I stopped in my tracks and said out loud, “Is that an alpaca?!”

It sure was. And not just any alpaca — it was the subject of

I swung open the newsstand door and pulled out the fresh top copy. I was so excited, I dropped my bags

and asked a stranger in the hallway to take a photo of me holding the paper. I immediately shared it with my whole family.

From that moment on, every Thursday evening in the newsroom felt electric. I looked forward to our weekly meetings with a sense of purpose and belonging I hadn’t felt anywhere else.

Over the past two years, I’ve had the honor of serving on the editorial board as Distribution Manager, Associate Visual Managing Editor and eventually Visual Managing Editor. Each title came with new lessons, new late nights and new reasons to become more passionate about the wonderful world of student journalism.

I’m endlessly grateful — not just

Closing the lens

When I first walked into The Appalachian’s newsroom my freshman year, I took one look at how crowded it was and immediately walked back out. A year later, I put on a brave face and tried again. I made it in that time and never looked back.

When I walked into the newsroom, I made a beeline straight for the opinion desk.

I became Associate Opinion Editor my second semester with The Appalachian, working alongside and learning everything from Nadine Jallal, one of my favorite people to date. I stepped into the Opinion Editor role a year later, channeling my inner Nadine and hoping for the best.

To say it has been smooth sailing would be a lie, and, as one can tell fairly quickly from my columns, I am

Purpose

When I first came to App State in the fall of 2022, I was as much running away from my own mistakes and regrets as I was running toward some ill-defined goal that didn’t really suit me.

I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do with my life, and I felt completely and utterly purposeless.

It only took a month after I started for me to realize that I’d made a mistake and needed a change. It was then I decided to give journalism a try — that’s turned out to be one of the best choices I’ve ever made.

I’d always wanted to be involved with sports, but honestly, I’d never had the talent or drive to be an athlete and I’d long since given up on it. Joining the sports desk was the best way for me to get involved in something I love,

not one to hide the truth.

I’ve gotten my fair share of hate and even a four-page handwritten letter from an old man telling me all the ways my stance on abortion was wrong (with an attached reading to help prove his point). However, these things just make one thing abundantly clear — I’ve done my job quite well.

As I embark on the next chapter of my life, a PhD in chemistry at Wake Forest University, I hold each lesson learned and each memory made close to my heart, knowing that I would not be who I am today without The Appalachian. In a time as uncertain as this, I leave you with one piece of advice: never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot say. Stand up, speak up and remain steadfast in your values — it is imperative.

So, with a million more thank

and I dove in headfirst.

I’ve had the privilege of covering several memorable games both as a reporter and editor, and those occasions are some of my favorite memories in Boone.

Beyond the work, the people I’ve met have become some of my best friends and that’s not something I expected when I walked into my first full staff meeting in the fall of 2023.

All of the things that I’ve experienced at App State and The Appalachian during my time here have changed me so much.

I can’t say I don’t have regrets about my time here, but they’re outweighed by the good the people I’ve met have done in my life and I hope that they feel the same about me.

And now at the end of this chapter

yous in mind, a heavy heart and an extensive list of remaining opinions, I close my lens … but only for now. Onto you, Allie.

of my life, I realize that for the first time in all my 21 years of life, this place and these people finally gave me some sort of purpose.

Being an actuarial science major who is used to working on complex mathematical formulas, finance concepts and endless spreadsheets, I never imagined that the newsroom would become the place where I’d feel most at home.

As a sophomore searching for a deeper sense of community and belonging, joining The Appalachian never crossed my mind — that was, until my close friend, Kayla Masterman, introduced me to a brand-new role on the Editorial Board: Translations Editor. In that moment, something clicked. It felt as though the position had been crafted specifically for me.

Taking on this role allowed me not only to embrace and enhance my

native language at a predominately white institution, but also to give back meaningfully to the community that has so deeply shaped my college experience. Being part of the first Spanish-language news content in the area became more than just a responsibility; it became a passion and an honor.

I quickly found myself captivated by the vibrant culture of room 235.

Laughter filled icebreakers during our weekly meetings, sips of coffee from the trusty baby pink Keurig on sleepy mornings and those peaceful midday naps on the worn-in newsroom couch will forever be some of my most cherished college memories.

community within The Appalachian that gave me an unmatched sense of purpose.

Being surrounded daily by individuals so deeply committed, passionate and sincere has continually inspired me to strive for growth. As I move forward, the experience I’ve gained in this newsroom will stay with me as a constant reminder to always seek out the places, and people, that inspire the best in myself.

I proudly leave this position, excited and optimistic about the continued growth and bright future of the Translations Desk.

A picture-perfect journey

Ibought my first camera, a Canon Rebel T5, when I was in seventh grade. I had saved up birthday and Christmas money for years to afford it. I remember my mom driving me to the store and standing with me as the Target employee unlocked the display case for a 12-year-old. That moment marked the beginning of my journey with photography. Photography quickly became my emotional outlet. I would take photos of everything, and since I did not know how to download them to my computer, I made sure to print each one.

I kept this passion alive all through high school and into college. During my sophomore year of college, I met Ashton Woodruff, a photographer for The Appalachian, and my

However, it’s the genuine friendships and the nurturing predecessor.

Ashton encouraged me to join the paper, and when I finally did in September of my junior year, I realized photojournalism was my true calling. Through this experience, I’ve grown not only as a photojournalist but also as a person. The friendships I’ve formed through this organization are some of the most important in my life. This year, especially, would not have been possible without the support of my amazing colleagues.

I want to thank my incredible leaders — Jenna Guzman, Ethan Batchelor, Kaitlyn Close, Siri Patterson and Vivian Parks — for helping me through every crash out. To my visual family, Kayla (mother) Masterman and my siblings Rian Hughes, Chloe Pound, Emily Simpson, Gabe Plitt

and Sully Styles, for keeping me motivated and inspired. To the entire Ed Board and the photo desk for the laughs and late nights.

As I graduate and begin my journey into a Master of Arts at UNC-Chapel Hill, I know this organization will always hold a special place in my heart and I am forever grateful for my Appalachian baddies.

Ihaven’t been with The Appalachian very long. A little over two years ago I attended my first meeting, a general interest meeting. I was a nervous sophomore with no idea what I really wanted to do with my life.

However, this is not a story where The Appalachian magically fixed all of that. I will say that at that meeting, I was struck with such awe and reverence for the staff of this paper — for their capabilities, their knowledge and their kindness — and with a profound feeling that I could never live up to that standard. That meeting was in the Spring of 2023, and I didn’t return to The Appalachian until the Fall of 2024.

I was going through a lot then, and that feeling of inadequacy had nothing to do with the paper itself. Now, I am graduating college, which I wasn’t sure

I’d ever do, as Associate Multimedia Editor.

That admiration for the paper, and especially the people who make it possible, has never once waned, and my respect for them grows every single day. I am so grateful to them for welcoming me with open arms and helping me achieve things I didn’t know were possible.

I regret that I didn’t get that extra year and a half to work alongside these fantastic reporters and even more lovely people, but I am so thankful for the time that I have gotten with them.

I’ve grown so much and done so much, in too many ways to list here, and I truly owe that to the most important metric of my time here, the friends I’ve made (the real Appalachian was the friends we made along the way)!

The (Real) Appalachian @theappalachian signing off

InAugust of 2023, I texted a friend of mine, “I think I’m gonna go to a meeting for The Appalachian tn. The marketing desk sounds interesting, so I’m gonna go and see.”

As a sophomore advertising major, I was honestly just looking to add to my resume. Little did sophomore year Nora know she would be writing a farewell column as the Digital Marketing Director of The Appalachian nearly two years later.

My goal for the position was to integrate social media to be a more personal and engaging space where we could tell people’s stories while also giving the community content that they enjoyed. Something I’ll always

So, thank you to everyone who made this year the best one yet. I’ll miss you all.

be proud of is creating the TikTok account for The Appalachian to be able to engage with wider audiences and connect with more App State students.

As I sit here reflecting on my time with The Appalachian, I think of how immersive and unique this experience has been. From wanting nearly no involvement to working on the social media for hours on end, and from knowing one single person to working with some of the best people I’ve met in my college career. There’s so many experiences that molded my college career and being part of The Appalachian is definitely one of them.

I couldn’t end this farewell without

a special shout-out to the person who has molded my experience with The Appalachian the most. Emily Escobedo Ramirez has been an absolute joy to work alongside. She has always been there for me, whether that meant advice on what to do, an incoming crash out or when a debrief was needed.

I don’t know what’s next to come for @theappalachain, but what I do know is that I’ll be following (and liking and commenting) every step of the way.
