Changing campus landscape calls for extra tree care

When construction kicked off last February with the clearing of Duck Pond Field, campus arborists and landscapers removed a mangled pile of oak trees from the grounds where bonfires and tailgates once took place. The first severed trunks and dusted leaves served as a visible reminder that construction brings changes to both student and plant life.

Chris Erickson and Jordan Gragg, both International Society of Arboriculture certified arborists, specialize in managing around 3,400 trees and preserving App State’s Tree Campus USA university status. As the face of campus has changed with construction, so has their day-to-day tasks.

When campus construction started, Erickson, Gragg and their team of around 30 landscapers relocated several ginkgo trees from Stadium Lot. The group used air spading, a technique that clears the soil packed to the roots with compressed air, and successfully transplanted the trees to different spots around campus.

The Stadium Lot ginkgos are now seen across from Peacock, on Bodenheimer Drive and at Walker Hall.

Erickson explained relocation wasn’t the only challenge that arose with recent construction.

on campus — a white oak near Wey Hall.

“It’s probably 300 years old, and we fought pretty hard to make sure that it’s not impacted at all,” Erickson said.

The planned pathway guides pedestrians away from the tree’s trunk.

Construction workers will remove the old sidewalk to minimize hard surfaces near the tree. Erickson said these plans should benefit the white oak in the long term.

During construction, Erickson said he’s focused on “making sure it makes it through this.”

Temporarily, Erickson, Gragg and their team fenced off the tree, reminding those working and passing by to tread respectfully around it.

But, preservation and relocation is not always possible. The arborists weren’t able to relocate the large oak trees that once stood on Duck Pond Field.

“If we’re taking one down, it’s because we have to for safety or if we can’t help it, like for construction sometimes, we don’t have a say in that as much,” Erickson said.

Gragg said landscapers and volunteers will likely replace the removed trees during the biannual plantings the arborists facilitate in the fall and during Arbor Day in April. Hosting these events fulfills a piece of the yearly Tree Campus USA requirements, as listed by the Arbor Day Foundation.

If all requirements are met by the

school, like the presence of a tree advisory committee and service-learning events that engage the community with tree-planting, the Tree Campus USA distinction is renewed for another year. App State has held the title since 2014.

Erickson and Gragg’s jobs include the management and risk assessment of App State’s trees. To keep the threshold for risk of injury or property damage low across campus, the arborists practice preventative measures such as structural pruning and careful planning when it comes to choosing planting space and tree species.

“We’re thinking about all the things a tree might encounter, ice and snow — and slackliners,” Erickson said.

In the last four years, the arborists have focused on planting more native species capable of withstanding the elements. Sugar maples, red maples, hawthorns and sweet gums are just a handful of the native trees identifiable on App State’s campus. Erickson said he plans on planting more native species after construction finishes.

“I want to make sure that the trees that are getting planted around the dorms over there are quality from the start: good foundation, quality species, good selection,” Erickson said. “We’ve got to have a good foundation for the trees to grow for years and years.”

ICE rumors dispelled by Boone PD, frighten Latino community Emily Broyles | Associate News Editor Rumors that circulated social media regarding United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement operating in Boone were untrue and unfortunate, according to the Boone Police Department. For the Latino community, these rumors were stressful and frightening.

Andy Le Beau, captain of police operations, said the Boone Police Department notices this and is in regular contact with the Latino community.

Elizabeth Elias, a local Latina woman, credits the Boone Police Department for working with minorities, especially since it accepts identification from Project ID. Project ID is an orientation and identification drive for community members who cannot get a government issued ID, according to its website.

“If you get pulled over, you’re not going to be safe from a ticket, but at least the police is going to know who

you are and where you live,” Elias said.

Elias said with this resource, police can stray from making unnecessary arrests, which is one of the reasons why many Latinos are afraid of official figures.

“Especially in the Bamboo Road area (there) was this officer, people from the Latino community used to call him the racist police,” Elias said about a police officer in Boone about ten years ago. “He was just seeing a Latino driving, and he would just stop them right away.”

Elias said despite her past fear of police, she has had positive interactions with the Boone Police Department in recent years.

“They have been really helpful,” Elias said. “My family, we know that police are here to help, there’s some other people that (are) really scared of them.”

Elias said many Latinos fear law enforcement and often do not call the

police when they are needed because they are afraid of arrests as undocumented citizens.

The 287(g) program, a section of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, allows local law enforcement officers to push immigration law, which Latinos fear, Elias said.

Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman wrote in an email that his office has never participated in the 287(g) program.

“We do not have the resources to support the participation of a 287(g) program,” Hagaman wrote. “Most importantly, like all of our local partners, our call volume is very intense — we all are lucky enough just to hopefully move from call to call and render law enforcement services in a timely manner.”

Hagaman said the sheriff’s office is focused on addressing all community members’ needs.

“The demographics and diverse popula-

tions now dictate that we must move our mission from ‘typical’ law enforcement duties to a more socially engaged agency,” Hagaman wrote.

Hagaman defined “typical” law duties as traditional acts of arresting people.

Elias said local law enforcement officers have held meetings informing minorities of their rights. She said Latinos should go and learn laws that pertain to them so they won’t fear police.

“If they will know about their rights and what to do, it will be a totally different story,” Elias said. “On these rumors, they don’t know where to call, how to find out if it is true or not.”

Elias believes the rumor was created by someone not in the Latino community because the original message was typed in English. She thinks

move-in day police presence and latenight road construction triggered the rumors.

“People just start sending the message without figuring out if its true or not,” Elias said. “That was not right.”

Elias encourages Latinos to contact the Watauga Immigrant Justice Committee and local group Manos Latinos Unidos on Facebook with any concerns about immigration in the High Country.

App State Police Department named NC Law Enforcement Agency of the Year Anna Dollar | Reporter

The App State Police Department was named North Carolina Law Enforcement Agency of the Year by the North Carolina Police Executives Association in July.

“This is an inaugural award,” said Andy Stephenson, director of public safety and chief of university police. “We were nominated along with several other departments, and they chose us.”

The criteria for this recognition were innovation, engagement, collaboration and positive impact on policing in North Carolina, Stephenson said.

Stephenson credited his department's success to the support from Paul Forte, vice chancellor of

business affairs.

Forte said he supports the university police because of the way they “constantly want to improve,” so Forte, along with other outlets, helps them out financially the best that he can.

“We don’t have enough money to fund everything they do as fast as they need to do it,” Forte said.

“But, we have a long range plan of those that have the best bang for their buck.”

Money goes toward safety equipment, such as walkie-talkies and a new dispatch system.

The award does not have a financial reward, Stephenson said.

However, he said it provides recog-

nition.

“I thought that it was good publicity for our department,” Stephenson said.

Stephenson said this recognition highlighted the Appalachian Police Academy, a two year program where students receive an “advantage in criminal justice system careers.”

Stephenson said he has heard of students coming to App State mainly because of the police academy.

“Last year, it was the police academy, this year, it’s the award,” Forte said. “I’m looking forward to what the future holds.”

News From boards to bid day

A look at sorority recruitment Camryn Collier | Senior Reporter Boot-cut jeans, star earrings and big smiles were a staple last weekend at the Plemmons Student Union as Panhellenic recruitment started Aug. 23.

Macie Stafford, a freshman computer information systems major, waited outside the Solarium with group 15, watching the flurry of sorority women rush by, awaiting the first round of recruitment.

Stafford wore a light gray T-shirt with “Appalachian State Panhellenic Recruitment” on the front, the same shirt all potential new members, or PNMs, wore. Her pink highlighted hair was in two buns, and she wore purple lipstick, paired with a yellow jean skirt.

Excited and nervous, Stafford said she was most anxious to learn more about each sorority’s morals.

Sorority recruitment began earlier this year, with fall registration opening in early June. Normally, the

process starts mid-September, but began a few weeks earlier after Hurricane Florence delayed last year’s recruitment.

Senior exercise science major Ashlyn Lowder is the president of Alpha Phi Fraternity. She said an earlier recruitment is beneficial.

“Since (registration) is earlier now, the girls don’t have time to ask people what they think. Now it’s really them coming in with an open mind, which is how it should be,” Lowder said.

Along with Stafford, 510 other PNMs were split into 15 groups for the first round of fall recruitment, called “boards,” where they visit each of the 10 Panhellenic sororities in designated rooms in the student union.

The process started Aug. 17 with Meet the Greeks, a cookout on Sanford Mall that helped PNMs grow familiar with Greek life. PNMs then attended an orientation on Aug. 21 and

Aug. 30, 2019 22, where they received a “little black book” with information about the details of the recruitment process.

A few days after orientation, PNMs began their four rounds, broken up over two weekends, before receiving invitations or “bids” to join a sorority.

Through this process, PNMs and sororities narrow down their choices in a “numbers matching list,” senior management major and Kappa Delta Sorority president Rachael Beller said.

It is rare, she said, for a PNM to not receive a bid at all.

“We always tell girls to ‘trust the process,’” Beller said.

Generally, all 10 sororities have 30 to 45 open spots. An average of 50 women drop out over the process, Lowder said.

While most girls who go through recruitment receive a bid, it doesn’t always work out, a former sorority member said.

“I joined it, and they were so nice during the recruitment process.

But, after I got in, I felt that they were very unwelcoming and not that friendly,” she said. “I thought sorority girls were happy and would be excited for a new person and want to be

Communication studies major Kenedy Singletary is president of NPHC and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. “I’m an only child, and prior to college I never had anyone to call ‘sister.’ In April of 2018, I gained nine sisters. Joining a sorority has definitely greatly improved my college career and personal life,” Singletary wrote in

an email.

The NPHC intake process began Aug. 26, and anyone interested can fill out a form on AppSync, according to the App State NPHC website.

Junior childhood development major Faith Kernan, president of Alpha Delta Pi, shared her advice for PNMs going through the last stages of recruitment.

“With recruitment, I know it can be very scary and intimidating, but we’re just as nervous. We all want to impress the girls, but we want them to feel very welcomed and want them to love Greek life at App,” Kernan said.

“It’s something to be super excited about because it is just the beginning of an amazing journey.”

The first weekend of rounds brought smiles, excitement and more space buns from Stafford.

“I actually got three hours of sleep last night, so I’m jazzed,” she said.

Stafford said she is excited to continue going through recruitment and to find a sorority she can call “home.”

friends, but mostly they just stayed in their cliques and didn’t help me feel welcomed.”

The Panhellenic community works to get along with the entire Greek community through “panlove,” Beller said.

This community also includes three sororities in the National Pan-Hellenic Council, which are historically African American organizations. They use a process called Membership Intake, which involves a Meet the Greeks event and an informal

At this point, PNMs have narrowed down potential sororities to five. During Sisterhood Round, PNMs get a personal look into the sororities. Sororities showcase their friendship with songs and videos. This round is the most emotional, Beller said.

Considered the “big day,” all PNMs receive envelopes with an official invitation to a sorority that sees them fitting well in their organization. After that, the PNMs will “run home” and embrace their new sisters from the respective sorority on Sanford Mall.

Aug. 25: Philanthropy Round

Aug. 31: Preference Round

Each sorority has a specific national and local philanthropy it works with. For example, Kappa Delta often works with the local Girl Scouts chapter and Prevent Child Abuse in America, senior management major and Kappa Delta president Rachael Beller said.

During this round, sororities show PNMs the service work they do through presentations and speeches.

PNMs then go to their two top choices and learn more about the respective values. Sorority members share some of their favorite memories from years past and have more intimate conversations with the PNM. At the end of this round, PNMs make their final decisions on their top sororities.

Boone Pop Up provides creative space for local artists

Georgia Privott | Reporter Every five to six weeks, Hatchet Coffee transforms into a gallery of individuality and artistry. The walls and tables are decorated with handcrafted ceramics, intricate gold jewelry and upcycled vintage clothing.

In June 2018, local artist Megan Kelley created this museum of creativity known as Pop Up Boone.

A ceramic artist herself, Kelley began Pop Up Boone as a place to sell her work.

“I did a pop-up in Asheville two or three times and it hit me, like I could totally create this in Boone,” Kelley said.

The more things that you put out, the closer and faster you’re going to get the things that you want. crafts. Kelley said she wanted to make Boone’s pop-up different than Asheville’s with a more simplistic, elegant aesthetic and a close-knit vendor community.

“The first pop-up was meant to be a one and done thing, and it was during the summer, too, so it was strange that it was so successful,” Kelley said.

Kelley said her motto for keeping the pop-up going is to never stop creating.

“One of the best pieces of advice in terms of creativity is ‘iterate,’ which means, create something, and then create a new model of it, and then try it again and again,” Kelley said.

“The more things that you put out, the closer and faster you’re going to get the things that you want.”

The atmosphere Kelley created is unlike normal craft shows, where the vendor is face to face with the customers. Instead, customers are invited to explore tables of more than 70 vendors’ pieces.

“I wanted to create a space where community is being built. I want the vibe to always

be a celebration of creativity, both for the vendors and the customers,” Kelley said.

One vendor, senior communication sciences and disorders major Sarah Grace Hargrove, said Pop Up Boone gave her thrifting business a chance to grow.

“I really had this passion for a long time,” Hargrove said. “Pop-up has allowed me to come in as someone who didn’t know anything about advertising; I’ve been able to thrive here.”

Hargrove is the owner of Raining Sunshine Co., where she finds thrifted clothes and upcycles them.

Hargrove said ever since she was 8, she has remade clothes to fit her style.

“I wanted to look like Nancy Drew, and I had a lot of older sisters’ clothes that were too big for me, so I would fix them,” Hargrove said.

After the first Pop Up Boone, Hatchet contacted Kelley to offer a permanent space.

“One of the owners used to be a ceramic artist, and he has this passion for craft; he loved the idea of a pop up versus a craft show,” Kelley said.

As coffee lovers and artists alike explore the shop, they can make their own creations at the DIY zone, a table filled with watercolors and molds.

While painting with friends at the DIY zone, junior recreation management major Maddie Burdett said she comes to Pop Up Boone to get inspiration from other artists.

“I don’t always have the money to buy things, but it’s just a fun space,” Burdett said.

“It’s cool to see all the unique stuff that Boone has to offer.”

A year and 12 pop-ups later, Kelley said she will pass Pop Up Boone on to someone else.

“One of my core values in life is to be consistently challenged. I seek newness in the chaos and there are not enough new things happening in my life now,” Kelley said.

Whatever comes of Pop Up Boone, Kelley said she wants it to stay an outlet for people who want to try something new.

“If you really want to create something and you have an idea, No. 1 thing is to begin and keep trying,” Kelley said.

A&C Watauga High School student shares magic with Boone community Anna Muckenfuss | Video Editor Though most magicians never reveal their secrets, one local teen is starting to teach others in the community how to perform magic themselves.

Jackson Martin, a Watauga High School sophomore, said he knows how to perform over 100 magic and card tricks.

“I’ve always had a fascination with magic and enjoyed being able to fool other people,” Martin said. “I like giving people that feeling of not knowing what’s next. It’s really cool seeing their expressions.”

Martin hosted a camp for children on Aug. 1 to teach the magic that leaves audiences asking, “How did he do that?”

“If magicians didn’t reveal their tricks, then magic would be dead after the first magician,” Martin said.

After visiting four different magic shops in Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland while on family vacation, Martin said he has many new tricks to learn.

His favorite trick to perform is the “cup and balls” trick, which is a magic trick that uses misdirection to trick the audience into thinking the ball went through three cups.

“It’s the oldest magic trick in the history of magic,” Martin said. “It gets the best reactions because of the simplicity of it.”

Martin said no trick scares him, but some tricks are scarier for the audience.

“There are five bags and there’s one with a nail sticking up in it. It’s the most nerve-racking one because a nail could go through the back of my hand at any time,” Martin said.

Martin said he believes everybody cares about magic because of how intriguing it is, and he has never met anyone who said they did not like magic.

“People like getting fooled, especially when the impossible becomes possible,” Martin said. “I think magic really brings out the child in everybody.”

Martin plans to continue his magical career into adulthood. He said anyone who wants to become a magician should talk to older magicians.

“They are so well knowledged and can tell me things about magic that I didn’t know,” Martin said.

Martin plans to perform at the fall festival at Blowing Rock School Sept. 6.

Anti-hero 101:

App State professor teaches new honors first year seminar Marlen Cardenas | Reporter “I have practical experience with anti-heroes,” Jeff Lindsay, Honors College professor said. “I created one.”

Lindsay is a New York Times Co. bestselling author known for his Dexter book series, which inspired the Showtime/CBS series that ran for eight seasons. Lindsay is bringing his talents to his new honors first year seminar called, “The Anti-Hero in American Movies & TV.” Lindsay is a new professor, and his class is not trying to teach students something specific, but rather how to approach things, and that is something students will keep forever.

“I watched how (Dexter) was marketed and how it was put across. I watched what parts of it worked and what didn’t,” Lindsay said.

The seminar is discussion-based and teaches students analytical, expository and creative skills.

“Professor Lindsay is already one of my favorite professors,” freshman political science major Alexander Castillo said.

Castillo said he decided to take Lind-

say’s seminar because he is a film geek but was unaware of his professor’s popular background.

“I was shocked,” Castillo said. “I can't wait to see where this class takes me.”

Lindsay has taught classes before at Florida Gulf Coast University and enjoys giving back to his students. He said he has a lot of information he would like to pass on.

Jefford Vahlbusch, dean of the Honors College, said Lindsay’s seminar is an enriching and extraordinary opportunity for students.

“We are very excited to have him here, and it just makes all of us happy to really be finding ways within the Honors College to provide our students with exceptional opportunities,” Vahlbusch said. “We are always looking for great faculty from across the university from every department and every college.”

Even with Lindsay’s success, he doesn’t let it get to his head.

“I have three daughters, so I'm in no danger of thinking too much of myself,”

Lindsay said.

While Lindsay is a newcomer to App State, he is no stranger to the mountains. He attended Middlebury College in Vermont and got his bachelor’s degree in creative writing and literature.

“I got up to Middlebury, and everyone had rosy cheeks and they were walking around outside even though it was like 10 degrees, and smiling and shouting ‘Hey, how are ya? You’re gonna love it here, blah blah blah,’ and I just thought, ‘this is where I belong,’” Lindsay said. “I got that same kind of feeling here that it’s like a slightly larger version of Middlebury.”

Being an author won’t get in the way of teaching his seminar, except for missing a couple of classes for a book tour, Lindsay said.

“I have a new book that has been in the tubes forever,” Lindsay said. “It’s called ‘Just Watch Me,’ and it's a brand new anti-hero.”

“Just Watch Me” comes out Dec. 3.

Appalachian Theatre plans October opening Cameron Stuart | Reporter The Appalachian Theatre is opening its doors and lighting up downtown Boone in October with promises of uniting the community through various cultural events.

“It’s been a dream since 2007, when the theater closed, to get it reopened,” said Laura Kratt, executive director of the Appalachian Theatre. “It’s been a lively part of the community, the region, and having it closed was a real hardship for the people of Boone.”

The theater closed in 2007 as a movie theater because it was not a financially viable option at the time.

“Historical theaters in downtowns have been at the center point of economic developments for downtowns,” Kratt said. “You have so many businesses that are operating from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The theater does 5 p.m. to 12 a.m., so we’re filling in that gap of economic activity.”

In a study conducted by the Center for Economic Research and Policy Analysis, local spending by people attending theater

events was projected to put $3 million directly into the local economy.

Kratt said the theater will draw cultural tourists, tourists who are drawn to the culture and lifestyles of certain areas, who will spend twice as much money as other types of tourists.

Keith Martin, professor in the department of theatre and dance, and vice chair of the board of the Appalachian Theatre, said the theater will create 50 full-time jobs and other intangible benefits.

“It’s going to enrich the livability of Boone, quality of life and image for both residents and visitors; it’s going to extend our nightlife,” Martin said.

Martin said the theater will serve as a cornerstone for night and weekend events in the heart of Boone.

Parker Hallman, sophomore theatre education major and a member of the board of executives for the Appalachian Musical Theatre Club, said Boone can benefit from hav-

ing a public performance space that the community can use, apart from bars and coffee shops.

“App Theatre is a great space where hopefully club shows can one day perform on an actual stage where more members of the community will have access,” Hallman said.

The Appalachian Theatre was built in 1938 and operated for 70 years. The remodel is inspired by the original design.

Kratt said many historical buildings were lost, so having the opportunity to save and reinvent something to make it culturally relevant today is a real asset.

People can attend a variety of shows, including concerts, plays, dance events, lectures and film festivals.

“It’s been a long, hard job, but it should be very rewarding. The enthusiasm of the community has just been tremendous,” Kratt said.

Kratt said the theater is on schedule to open in October.

Maeve Sweeney This is my third year (of college). I skipped kindergarten, third grade and graduated a year early from high school, and then I’m graduating (from) here in three years.

My high school experience was pretty similar to the traditional high school experience. Like, I went to prom and stuff and all of that, but I think my parents definitely cared a lot about our education, and we read a lot of books, and I mean, I enjoyed it.

My sister graduated in three years from college, my brother skipped two grades and my little sister skipped one.

I think because I skipped the first two so young, it wasn’t a big deal. I just kind of fit in with those kids. And then when I graduated high school, it kind of felt like the class that I graduated with was my class anyway because I had classes with them throughout high school, so it just feels like I’m older than I am.

A&C Student starts club to mentor young musicians Christina Beals | A&C Editor An App State student wants to give underprivileged children a window into the world of music and take away the same financial barriers he faced as a young musician, but it goes beyond money: he hopes to provide the same mentorship he received.

Sophomore undecided major Sterling Wilson started the process of bringing a Musical Empowerment chapter to App State in early August.

Headquartered in Carrboro, Musical Empowerment is a nonprofit organization that nurtures meaningful relationships between collegiate volunteer music teachers and children in underserved communities through free, one-on-one music lessons, according to its website.

Wilson said he heard about Musical Empowerment through his former high school band director, who connected Wilson with the organization.

“I was telling him about my life goals and how I wanted to start a program where kids can get music lessons for free, because I feel like it just really holds some kids back,” Wilson said. “There are some children whose parents can afford to give them private lessons their whole life, and I simply wasn’t one of those kids.”

Wilson was in fifth grade when his music teacher chose him and five of his peers to perform a singing number with her, which a member of The A&T Four attended.

The A&T Four were a group of North Carolina A&T students who headed a sitin protest at segregated Woolworth’s Lunch Counter in Greensboro on Feb. 1, 1960.

“He tried getting in touch with my parents for two weeks. When he finally got in touch with them, he told them about how I had a gift for music, and that I should do something with it,” Wilson said. “That’s when my parents put me in band against my will in middle school, and I just completely fell in love with it.”

In seventh grade, Wilson decided to pursue his education at App State and become a band director.

When he was in high school, Wilson said he began to realize how difficult music school auditions are.

“I didn’t have anybody who could just help me out. Lessons were expensive, and my parents couldn’t really afford them,” Wilson said.

“I got interested in Musical Empowerment because Marty was helping me for free.

I just wanted to be a band director until I realized there’s so much more I can do to help people,” Wilson said.

Wilson is in the early stages of starting App State’s chapter, beginning with assembling his leadership team.

“As of now, I’ve only chosen my co-president. I haven’t chosen any of the other leadership positions, like treasurer, somebody to have direct relations with the schools that we’re working with and have direct relations with the parents of the students,” Wilson said.

Once he assigns leadership positions, Wilson said he will start a volunteer teacher application and interview process.

Volunteer teacher positions are not exclusive to music majors, Wilson said, but students must have three or more years of experience playing an instrument and must pass a background check.

“Once the teacher application process starts, I will try to start working with Hardin Park (Elementary School) and I’ll ask music teachers, ‘Do you think that there is a need for this here?’ And, any music teacher is going to say, ‘Yes’ to that,” Wilson said.

After talking to music programs at local schools, Wilson said he will work on advertising for money, instrument and practice location donations.

“We are hoping to start doing lessons by the springtime. It usually takes a year, but we’re really trying to fast-track it here at App,” Wilson said.

Through his Musical Empowerment chapter, Wilson said he hopes to teach children the importance of music education and mentorship.

“We’re here to just push the kids forward, and we’re here to lift them up and empower them,” Wilson said.

Build on the momentum from last year: App State is coming off another successful season, in which they went 11-2, got an Associated Press ranking for the first time in school history, won the Sun Belt Championship and won the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. They were one of the youngest teams in college football last year and return 10 offensive starters and six defensive starters. Despite a mostly new coaching staff, the Mountaineers are still very much the same team and shouldn’t try to make too many changes to their play style. It worked last year, and there’s no reason it shouldn’t work again this year.

Dan Davidson | Reporter After falling short in last year’s Sun Belt conference tournament championship, App State volleyball looks for redemption in 2019.

“We’ve been there twice in the five years that we’ve been in the Sun Belt, and I’m sick and tired of being second. I want to win it,” head coach Matt Ginipro said.

The Mountaineers enjoyed a 22win season in 2018, which led them to conquer the Sun Belt’s East Division and compete for a conference championship. Senior middle hitter Emma Longley was selected to the All-Sun Belt First Team, while junior libero Emma Reilly was awarded Second Team All-Sun Belt honors.

“All the work we put in last year got us that far, but it wasn’t enough,” Longley said. “We just have to keep getting after it every single day, and go even harder than we have in the past.”

While last year’s loss to Texas State in the championship was devastating, the team now looks to use it as motivation.

“We watched a video about motivation, and the person who was talking said someone had stolen their bike when they were a kid, and so the team came back with, ‘Texas State stole our bike, and we’ve got to get it back,’” Ginipro said.

Ginipro said he believes one of

the major strengths of the team this year is the chemistry and tight-knit relationships his players share.

“At the end of our preseason, we went off the mountain and got a lake house at Lake Hickory, and we’re all together in one house, all of us, staff included,” Ginipro said. “Those three days were huge. The chemistry is great.”

It’s easy for a team to look ahead to a potential championship rematch with Texas State, but Ginipro said he doesn’t think that’s such a good idea.

“We’ve got to be thinking about ETSU tomorrow,” Ginipro said.

“Then next week, we’ve got to think about Arizona, and Loyola Mary-

mount and Samford. If we keep doing that, what we want to happen will happen in the future.”

App opens the season against nationally-ranked Arizona in the Cactus Classic on Aug 30. The season-opening trip is somewhat of a homecoming for junior middle blocker Kara Spicer, who hails from Peoria, Arizona.

“I’m so excited. I can’t wait to see my family, my friends and compete in front of them,” Spicer said.

“It’s just really exciting having everyone come see where I’m from, what I came from and my upbringing, so I’m really excited.”

With three preseason All-Sun

Belt selections in Longley, Reilly and Spicer, several key returners and six newcomers, the Mountaineers have the talent and depth to compete for another shot at the Sun Belt crown this year. For Longley and senior libero Sydney Farthing, this year is the last chance at a title.

“It’s kind of bittersweet just because I never really thought that I would be a senior,” Longley said.

“I’m approaching it kind of like giving it my all. Not that I haven’t in the past, but it’s like a different type of approach. I’m excited for it, but I’m also wanting to go out giving it all I have.”

We just have to keep getting after it every single day, and go even harder than we have in the past.

This season marks 150 years of college football and 91 years of App State football. The Mountaineers have seen much transition since their inaugural 1928 season, changing conferences four times and head coaches 21 times.

But, in that time, they have claimed three division I-AA national championships and 21 conference titles, four since joining the Sun Belt.

With only eight seniors on this year’s roster and a first year head coach, some may think App State is due for a down year. But, the players returning bring back much of the talent that produced its championship and bowl-winning season in 2018, including Reese’s Senior Bowl watch list members linebackers Jordan Fehr and Akeem Davis-Gaither and offensive tackle Victor Johnson.

I believe new head coach Eliah Drinkwitz will be successful, as well. His resume speaks for itself, coaching high-producing offenses at Boise State and NC State. His 2018 Wolfpack finished No. 31 in the country in scoring, averaging 33.8 points per game.

Meanwhile, App State returns 16 of its 22 starters, including 10 of 11 on offense, tying them for tenth in the country in returning production. The returning offensive players were part of a squad that averaged 37.3 points per game, good for No. 16 in the nation and 25 slots ahead of the next best Sun Belt team.

With this in mind, I think the App State football team is poised to have one of its best seasons yet. One hurdle former head coach Scott Satterfield and his past squads could not overcome was defeating a “Power Five” opponent. Drinkwitz and his team could change that with a Sept. 21 road trip to Chapel Hill to take on the Tar Heels. If the Mountaineers can break the “Power Five” curse, we’ll know this team is truly special.

NFL rookies from App State fight for final roster spots Franklin Bogle | Reporter Though no Mountaineers were drafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, five signed free agent deals to compete for roster spots during the preseason.

Clifton Duck, the All-Sun Belt cornerback who left App State after his junior year, signed with the Chicago Bears. Star running back Jalin Moore and defensive lineman MyQuon Stout signed with the New York Jets, senior cornerback Tae Hayes signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and cornerback Austin Exford inked his deal with the Houston Texans.

So far this preseason, Duck has made the biggest impact for his team.

In his first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, Duck led all Bears players with six tackles. In his second game, he caught a goal line interception and returned it 62 yards against the New York Giants. His next game is Aug. 29 against the Tennessee Titans, in which he will see a lot of playing time.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy said he was watching the cornerback position closely, and even singled out Duck as a “guy we’re watching pretty closely” according to ChicagoBe-

Hayes has also made himself a tough cut for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Though the Jaguars are loaded at the cornerback position, Hayes has carved out a spot for himself in the presea-

son. PFF.com ranked Hayes at No. 20 on their “top 25 rookies through week three of the NFL preseason” list. In

his first game, he picked off former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley, then followed with four solo tackles in his second week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Former secondary teammate Exford has also played well, seeing the field in both of the Texans’ first two preseason games, recording six tackles overall. The Texans possess a great front seven but their secondary is consistently a weak spot, giving Exford a chance at making the final roster.

Moore, who finished his career at App State ranked sixth in program history with 3,570 rushing yards, has yet to carry the ball in the preseason for the Jets. New York is stacked at the running back position, but Moore is currently still on the roster.

His former Mountaineer and current Jets teammate Stout has recorded one tackle during the preseason thus far but should get more playing time in the final game in which free agents are given more opportunities to showcase their abilities.

Roster cuts are finalized by Aug. 31 at 4 p.m.

Athletics director calls 2018-19 “most successful year in APP STATE HISTORY” Silas Albright | Sports Editor App State athletics had a tremendously successful 2018-19. Football, wrestling, women’s cross country and women’s tennis brought home conference championships.

Football won its fourth straight bowl game. Women’s basketball won the Women’s Basketball Invitational Championship. Volleyball won the Sun Belt East Division. And baseball and softball both made the Sun Belt tournament for the first time.

“You can make a case that 201819 was the most successful year in Appalachian State history,” Director of Athletics Doug Gillin said.

Competing athletically isn’t the only thing Gillin is focused on. He said App State athletics has had 14 straight

semesters with an average GPA over 3.0, and they finished sixth in the country with over 10,000 community service hours last year.

“So, collectively, when I look at those three areas, it’s hard to debate that it was, if not, the most successful year in Appalachian State athletics academically, socially and competitively,” Gillin said. “It’s up there for debate with anybody that wants to debate the history of those three categories.”

Another topic for discussion within App State athletics is the various construction projects around campus.

“We are still on pace to have this open in phases starting in the fall of 2020,” Gillin said about the west end zone project in Kidd Brewer Stadium.

“Literally any day now, we’re really going to start seeing concrete and steel starting to take shape.”

Gillin also mentioned how he would like to eventually connect the east and west end zones of Kidd Brewer for more fan seating.

“I kind of keep my eye on 2022 when North Carolina comes in here.

What is that next phase between fall of ‘20 when we move in and fall of ‘22 when we know that UNC’s coming in here, and it’ll be pretty crowded?”

Gillin also provided an update on the Highway 105 construction project that will build new track and field and tennis facilities.

“We had to change architects, slowed us down a little bit, and so we’re

back on board with a new architect, got some new renderings and drawings,” Gillin said. “Hopefully, we’ll have the track done and the outdoor tennis done by summer to fall of next year. And then we’ll shift our attention to indoor tennis and softball.”

The construction on West Campus and the end zone project will continue throughout football season.

“We’ve known this is going to be happening for a long time now. Everything we’re saying is, ‘Arrive early and stay late,’” Gillin said.

The gates of The Rock will open two hours before kickoff this year and there will be added entertainment leading up to game time.

Aside from football, Gillin under-

stands how important it is to have a successful men’s basketball program and he hopes to take a step towards that in 2019-20.

“To continue to be relevant in the world of FBS college athletics, you’ve got to be good at basketball. You’ve got to at least be average in basketball,” Gillin said. “We’re going to give it all we’ve got to figure that out. That’ll start this year with (new men’s basketball head coach) Dustin (Kerns). We got the right coach; I know that for sure.”

After such a strong year in 201819, App State athletics is set to try to build off that in 2019-20.

Night Owl routes provide a necessary alternative to beeping Tommy Mozier | Opinion Editor The new AppalCart Night Owl service is long overdue.

After relying on an unofficial, student-run system of designated drivers, App State students and Boone residents can finally use a more consistent and safer way to travel at night on the weekends.

The Boone student beeper system benefits many students and members of the community, myself included, as an easy income supplement and a relatively safe way to get to and from parties, work, the grocery store or wherever the rider needs to go for only a couple of dollars.

Of course, there are obvious risks to getting into a stranger’s car. Although they are far between, reports of attempted sexual assault, harrassment and beepers driving under the influence periodically appear on the Boone Student Beeper Facebook page.

The online beeper community typically does a good job of identifying offenders and removing them from the group, but the system still relies on crowd-sourced enforcement. With no official way to report bad drivers, we have no way of knowing if other offenses go unreported. We can’t fire beepers for malpractice. We just have to trust the person driving us.

The beeper system grew out of the necessity for designated drivers in a college town. It’s not perfect but better than having more drunken drivers on the roads. However, the system will only endure as long as public transportation or ride-share companies do not fill the designated driver void in Boone.

AppalCart has shown it is willing to fill that void. The Night Owl bus routes will not replace beeping yet; they aren’t extensive enough. Until Uber, Lyft or another ride-share company has a significant presence in Boone, the system will endure. But, AppalCart has provided students with a much needed beeper alternative, should we choose to use it.

CEOs need to put

actions over

words

On Aug. 19, a group of some of the richest, most powerful people in the world came together to release a revolutionary, logical statement.

The Business Roundtable, a lobbying group that includes 192 of the highest-paid CEOs in the world, released a one-page statement ensuring companies “fundamental commitment to all of our stakeholders.” Yes, they even underlined “all” for emphasis. All but seven of the 192 members signed it.

It may seem obvious that a corporation should consider the needs of its stakeholders — customers, employees, suppliers and the communities the corporations reside in — while making decisions. But, since the late 1970s, corporations have only really cared about one group: those who own their stock.

This is called shareholder primacy, a theory that the goal of a corporation is to make the most money for its shareholders before considering the other people whom the corporation affects.

This mindset is destructive. Take Valeant Pharmaceuticals, for example. Instead of investing in expensive things, like the research and develop-

ment of new, more effective drugs, Valeant CEO Mike Pearson decided to buy other pharmaceutical companies to create monopolies on certain drugs and drastically raise prices.

One of the drugs, a treatment for people with a rare, life-threatening copper allergy, went from $30 per month to $20,000 per month. With no alternative, people handed over their life savings. All the while, Valeant’s stock soared.

A dramatic example, but shareholder primacy gives corporations excuses to pay employees too little, restrict benefits, price gouge, or create cheap, harmful products. It’s fine as long as shareholders make money.

The Business Roundtable, on the surface, challenges the elite consensus. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who chairs the roundtable, stated “major employers are investing in their workers and communities because they know it is the only way to be successful over the long term.”

Are CEOs finally responding to the rampant income inequality plaguing the U.S.? Not so fast. CEO pay has risen more than 900% since the 1980s, while average worker wages have only risen 12%, not keeping up with infla-

tion. Absent from the statement was any concrete pledge or support of a law that would help the group reach its expressed goal, for example, a $15 federal minimum wage.

CEOs appear worried that if a Democrat wins the presidency, the government will more tightly regulate corporations. Both Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts have stated they will take measures to ensure corporations take all stakeholders into account.

The statement seems more like a self-imposed punishment to lessen future punishments than a commitment to change. Except, the punishment is nothing more than an empty statement with no concrete promise to make things better.

It could be that the rich and powerful truly had a moral awakening and want to correct the economic mess they are largely responsible for. But, until corporations take decisive actions to raise worker pay, provide better benefits and better protect the people and environments they serve, no piece of paper is enough.

It’s time to be honest about

Conner Hughes | Reporter If you’re like me, anxious to consume the latest bit of political drama, you watch the Democratic Party debates.

After the June debate, you likely walked away with two conclusions: a feeling of cathartic fascination every time Marianne Williamson spoke and a genuine sense of awe at the performance of Kamala Harris.

Harris, the junior senator from California, viciously confronted Joe Biden about his past comments regarding working with segregationists and forced busing, saying, “I also believe — and it’s personal, it was hurtful — to hear you talk about two United States senators who built their reputations and careers on the segregation of race in this country. It was not only that, you also worked with them to oppose busing. There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bussed to school every day. That little girl was me.”

Harris blasted the Democratic frontrunner and heir apparent to the party. After the debate, all the talk was about the ascendance of Harris, how she might possibly crack the early polls showing Biden miles ahead of the rest of the field.

Then, a little-known representative from Hawaii was given the microphone in the second round of the Democratic debates, and all hell broke loose as Rep. Tulsi Gabbard shed light on Harris’ prosecutorial background.

“Kamala Harris says she’s proud of her record as a prosecutor and she’ll be a prosecutor president, but I’m deeply concerned about this record,” Gabbard said. “There are too many examples to cite, but she put

over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.”

Gabbard also accused Harris of blocking verdict-changing evidence and abusing the prison labor system.

Now, Gabbard’s motivation to move up in the polls should be considered in light of her comments regarding Harris.

Additionally, some of Gabbard’s evidence included actions taken by employees of California’s Department of Justice while under Harris’ tenure, not specifically actions Harris ordered. However, Gabbard was clearly right: there is so much more to mention about Harris’ past.

Harris, then the attorney general of California, used a program

that threatened parents with prosecution if children were missing school on a consistent basis. In 2010, when asked about the program, Harris laughed about threatening parents with jail time. According to a TheNation article, Harris fought against initial attempts at reforming California’s “Three Strikes” law, which gave life sentences after a third violation of the law if the first two violations were serious felonies — even if the third was drug possession or theft.

Harris, at best, has a mixed record as an attorney general. She touts her opposition to the death penalty but defended it in court in 2014. She also accelerated the testing of rape kits and mandated implicit bias training during her tenure.

The worst part of Harris’ record lies in the sword used on Biden regarding mandatory busing. During the debate, when Biden attempted to defend himself by stating that busing decisions were an issue he wanted addressed at the state and local level, Harris responded by saying that the federal government needs to step in when states fail to support their marginalized citizens, indicating she supported federally-mandated busing.

However, after the debate, when asked if she in fact supported federally-mandated busing, Harris spun an impressive position, saying, “I think of busing as being in the toolbox of what is available and what can be used for the goal of desegregating America’s schools.”

When asked what that meant, Harris said, “I believe that any tool that is in the toolbox should be considered by a school district.”

The senator could’ve just said

“no.” This is not the first time Harris has walked back a position taken on the debate stage. She also walked back support for eliminating private health insurance, blaming a misunderstanding of the question.

While Democrats are picking who to send to face Donald Trump in 2020, they should consider the entirety of the candidates’ resume and policy proposals, not just the convention-

al sound bites and “gotcha” moments.

In that process, Democrats should analyze if Harris holds the necessary burden of proof as a progressive, respectable antithesis to Trump. If not, perhaps it’s time to charge Harris with continuing her service in the Senate rather than the Oval Office.

Submissions should not exceed 100 words and must include the event title, date/time, location and cost, and a contact email, phone and/or URL. Announcements will be edited as needed and will run as space allows. Preference is given for events that are free or have a nominal cost.

Nonprofit children’s museum needs volunteers to assit with art projects, keep the space clean and safe, and interact with visiting families. Volunteers are required to complete a 30 minute training before their first shift and a background check will be run.

Want to lay out this paper? Have a flair for graphic design? Email editor@theappalachianonline.com to express interest! Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) preferred but not required. Opportunities available for student designers of all skill sets.
