2 100 Rules for Living in Boone

Boone is a special place. Maybe you already know that and that’s why you chose to come to Appalachian, or maybe you’ll discover the magic during your first year here. Either way, you need to know a few things to survive your first year in Boone and your first year of college. Here are a list of 100 rules for life in Boone and at App, crowdsourced from sections 103 and 104 of COM 2600: Introduction to Journalism from spring semester 2014. Read below, and heed the wisdom of your predecessors. As you go through your first year, tweet us your tips @TheAppalachian with hashtag #BooneTips, and maybe you’ll see them in next year’s guide.

1. Own a pair of Chacos.

2. Wear whatever you want, wherever you want, whenever you want.

3. You will get snow in April. Don’t be surprised.

4. Spring break is not spring break. It’s still winter.

5. Correct anybody who pronounces Appal-ahchian as Appa-lay-chian.

6. Just because you own a four-wheel drive, doesn’t mean you know how to drive in the snow.

7. Los or Dos: You have to pick one.

8. The mall is not a mall. It’s Panera Bread and a used game store.

9. Everything is within walking distance.

10. If you are wearing a lanyard, you are a freshman.

11. Always check your email before class, because it could be canceled because of snow.

12. But don’t expect snow to cancel class.

13. Football game day is a holiday.

14. There are no seats in the library during exams.

15. The second floor of the library is not for doing homework.

16. It takes longer to build stairs for Chapell-Wilson than it does to build a Waffle House.

17. Life lesson: If it’s free, take it. Food, T-shirts, rides, pens.

18. Maybe not drinks though.

19. Trying to drive somewhere on King St.? Top off your gas tank and bring a snack.

20. Always make sure you remember when Stick Boy’s free cookie/free coffee giveaway is.

21. During move-in week, don’t expect to find hangers at Wal-Mart.

22. Rivers Street is a speed trap.

23. The only way you’ll get tan in Boone is in a tanning bed.

24. Don’t wear a bikini on Sanford Mall.

25. Slack-lining is a thing.

26. ENO-ing (hammocking) is also a thing.

27. You will more than likely lose your App Card at some point.

28. No-Shave November is a year-round thing.

29. It will always be Central Dining Hall.

30. You will hate Florida drivers.

31. The Blue Ridge Parkway is the definition of taking the scenic route.

32. Your car might break on the hill by The Cottages.

33. Expect to go without showering for two days

at least once while you’re here.

34. You can’t always tell the difference between homeless people and students.

35. There are no black barbershops in Boone.

36. If you haven’t had a cookie from Appalachia Cookie Company, you haven’t lived.

37. Order the “Ron Swanson” from Appalachia Cookie Company: Chocolate chip, maple, bourbon and bacon cookie.

38. Go sledding on Suicide Hill.

39. And be prepared to go to the hospital afterward.

40. Get a pair of Bean boots for the winter.

41. You should never have a hard time finding where to eat breakfast off campus.

42. Jimmy John’s will always deliver, no matter the weather.

43. Volunteering is easy here. Visit the ACT office for information.

44. If you want ice cream, go to Blowing Rock and get Kilwin’s.

45. Go to Haikido.

46. Only if you get shrimp sauce, though.

47. Save the expensive restaurants for when your parents are visiting.

48. Howard’s Knob is accessible even if the gate is closed, if you’re dedicated enough.

49. People climbing in trees is normal.

50. Seatbelt tickets are real here.

51. Shoes are optional.

52. Ignore the forecast.

53. Own at least one flannel shirt.

54. The construction on 321 will never end.

55. Coffee is your friend during exam week.

56. Buy an ice scraper.

57. Leggings are an everyday outfit. They’re just jeans.

58. Remember when we beat Michigan?

59. Tailgating starts at 9 a.m., no matter what time the game actually starts.

60. You must own a yellow scarf and a black dress.

61. Don’t expect air conditioning when it gets warm.

62. Wear layers.

63. Sanford Hall will always be hot. So will Walker.

64. During the winter, you will fall on the ice at least once… a week.

65. Learn all the trails.

66. You have to get the picture on Rough Ridge.

67. You have to Instagram at least one sunset.

68. If your Chacos haven’t smelled, you’re doing it wrong.

69. Cascades: Rice & beans.

70. Understand where the cheapest meal is each day.

71. Phil’s gas station is your friend.

72. No one reads on Reading Day. It’s on Saturday.

73. Church parking lots do not hold any mercy.

74. If your parents ask where to go, the answer is Dan’l Boone Inn Restaurant.

75. Cook-Out is heaven at 2 a.m.

76. Don’t cause problems for the locals.

77. Be as stressed out as possible when it’s time to sign up for classes.

78. Prepare to spend a whole day waiting on books.

79. The walk up to Mountaineer is no joke.

80. The Living Learning Community (LLC) kind of looks like Hogwarts.

81. The walk to the Quinn is your workout.

82. Every day is leg day at App. 83. Parking tickets are common here. Expect to receive one, or more.

84. Appalachian is hot, hot, hot!

85. Don’t expect to find parking on King Street.

86. You will lock yourself out of your freshman dorm at least once.

87. Don’t buy all your groceries at The Market, unless you have leftover Monopoly money.

88. Need to de-stress? Visit the cat room at the Humane Society.

89. Keep wishing there was a Target in Boone.

Maybe your wish will come true.

90. It won’t.

91. Bring your AppCard everywhere.

92. Georgia Southern will never be as good as us at anything.

93. Make fun of Western whenever you can.

94. We have awesome P.E. classes.

95. Learn to snowboard. Or ski. Or try.

96. Go to the movies for $1 on campus.

97. There’s no wind direction in wind.

98. Summertime is 60 degrees.

99. You’ll have snow days… and then more.

100. If you can get through the maze of Anne Belk Hall, you can get through life.

3 App State Bucket List

1. Get a picture with Yosef.

He’s usually walking through the stands at football games, and the best way to get his attention is to go all out in gold and black attire. The more spirited you are, the better.

2. See campus from Howard’s Knob State Park.

If you’ve ever wondered what App would look like if you could see it all from above, this is your chance. It’s almost like looking down on a real life map.

3. Hammock on Sanford Mall.

This is a must for de-stressing between classes.

4. Hike Rough Ridge.

Get a picture sitting on the edge of the rock that will make your parents cringe.

5. Get involved! Join a club or organization.

Appalachian offers more than 300, with something for almost everyone. You can search a full directory of university sponsored organizations at clubconnect.appstate.edu.

6. Sled down Suicide Hill behind Walker Hall on a snow day.

Try not to let it live up to its name.

7. Go swimming in a waterfall.

Trash Can Falls is a popular spot, a short 20-minute drive from campus.

8. Wear Chacos.

Don’t be ashamed. Your feet will thank you.

9. See a show at Legends.

Appalachian Popular Programming Society, or APPS, hosts dozens of events and concerts every semester. If you want to get a feel for the culture of the High Country, try an act with folk or bluegrass influences.

10. Volunteer in Boone.

There are countless organizations that give out community

service hours to students that can easily be located by walking into the Appalachian and the Community Together, or ACT, office, located on the first floor of the student union.

11. Go kayaking or canoeing.

The New River and Watauga River both run through Boone. You can go on a trip with Outdoor Programs or visit a local outpost and rent boats for the day.

12. Go to a 1st Friday art crawl for a taste of Boone culture.

Head to King Street every first Friday of the month (except January) for local art, music, food and more.

13. Walk across the swinging bridge at the top of Grandfather Mountain.

It’s not as scary as it looks and the view is incredible.

14. Take a skiing or snowboarding lesson.

Appalachian Ski Mountain is the closest to campus and offers student discounts on certain nights in the winter. (You can even take a course on either as a P.E. credit) 15. Pull an all-nighter in the library.

Whether you enjoy this or not, it’s a college right of passage. Belk library is now open 24/5 and has a coffee shop conveniently located on the first floor.

16. Eat breakfast for dinner in the dining hall.

Thursday nights mean the best food you will ever eat in Roess Dining Hall. Look for the Appalachian “A” waffles downstairs in Sanford Commons.

17. Tailgate outside of The Rock.

Get the whole college football experience by staking out a tailgate spot before a game, complete with cornhole and grilled hot dogs.

18. Master the art of layering in the winter and fall.

You may think you’re prepared, but chances are, you’re not. The secret to surviving the High Country’s wild weather is wearing more layers than you ever imagined.

19. Express Yosef.

Participate in an open mic night in Crossroads or take a free painting class at Turchin center.

So you’ve run out of underwear: How to do laundry in a dorm

by Stephanie Sansoucy Community Outreach Director My first time ended with a phone call to my dad and some troubled housekeeping staff, but it doesn’t have to be that way for everyone.

There will come a time when you will have to do your first load of laundry in your new dorm. If you’re like me, you’ll need some help.

Otherwise, you might put your dirty clothes and detergent into a dryer, turn it on and then learn your lesson the hard way.

That is exactly what I did: Put my clothes in the wrong machine and watched my first attempt at being an adult splash blue liquid all over the door of a dryer. I didn’t know that the washers were the top-loading machines, and I most certainly didn’t pay attention when the AppCard scanner asked if I just wanted to pay for one dry cycle (why would I need more than one?).

Since the dryer incident of 2012, I’ve learned some tips about dorm laundry that I will now share with you.

1. The washers are usually top loading and are numbered starting with one. Dryers are usually front loading and start with higher numbers.

2. If you subscribe to the #YOLO school of thought and would not like to sort your clothes into whites and colors, avoid any repercussions of your risky choice and wash your mosh pit of clothes on the “white” setting. This will cut down on the risk of your colors bleeding together, but there are no guarantees. So be safe, sort your loads into whites, darks and colors.

3. Always pour your detergent

into a cap or measuring cup before pouring it into the washer. You don’t want to be “that guy or girl” who floods the laundry room with suds.

4. Before turning on the dryer, use a tissue or used dryer sheet to clean the lint screen in order to prevent it from catching fire. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, the lint screen is located at the bottom of the opening to the dryer. You lift up the screen and a gross mix of hair and lint will be caught in it. This can be removed by simply wiping the fuzz off the screen.

5. Cut dryer sheets in half to save money.

6. Do not leave your clothes in a washer or a dryer. People will take them out and put them on the folding table if you’re lucky. However, I’ve seen my fair share of clothes dumped on the floor. Especially on a Sunday night when everyone remembers they have no clean underwear for class the next day.

7. If you do find yourself in a situation where you need to remove someone’s clothing from a machine, give him or her a courtesy 5-10 minutes before removing clothes.

If you want good karma, fold the clothes on a nearby table.

When in doubt, call your trusted expert in domestic affairs. For me, this was my dad only because he got a kick out of it, and I didn’t want to shame my own mother. In the event of a mishap, whether that be flooding your residence hall’s laundry room or putting detergent in a dryer, let a residence assistant know so they can better assist you.

What does the Counseling Center have to offer you?

by Nicole Caporaso News Reporter College can sometimes feel extremely overwhelming. If this is the case for you, there is no shame in visiting the Counseling Center.

It can be something small, or, in the event of feelings of depression, relationship issues, suicidal thoughts, stress, loneliness, substance abuse, grief and loss, roommate conflicts and anxiety, it can be serious.

The Counseling and Psychological Services Center, located right above the post office in the Miles Annas Student Services building, offers as-

sistance to students in various ways.

The counselors offer independent counseling sessions of about 50 minutes once per week, for up to 10 weeks. This short-term counseling is a chance for students to talk about personal problems confidentially with an expert. Appointments can be made or there are walk-in hours that vary depending on the day, but run on a first-come, first-serve basis.

There is also group counseling, which, unlike independent counseling, allows students to attend indefinitely. There are groups centered around several topics, including a transgender therapy group, body im-

age group, sexual trauma survivors, mindfulness group, gay, lesbian and bisexual group, ADD/ADHD group and a stress management group.

Other counseling offered is couples/family counseling and major and career counseling. Major and career counseling is done by the Peer Career Center in Plemmons Student Union through a partnership with the Counseling and Psychological Services Center.

While walk-ins run on a firstcome, first-serve basis, if there happens to be an emergency, such as a life-threatening situation or trauma, a student can walk into the counsel-

ing center any time during operating hours and receive help immediately if the student mentions that it is an emergency.

If a student needs help in the case of an emergency after operating hours, by contacting the university police, a student will be put in contact with a counselor, if needed, on a 24/7 basis.

Other services include alcohol and drug programs that include recovery meetings and intervention help.

On the Counseling Center’s website, there is also online screening available for depression, alcohol and eating disorders.

Why you shouldn’t turn a blind eye to App State sports

by Cory Spiers Sports Editor Let’s start by stating the obvious: App State football is wildly popular.

The legacy that the Mountaineers paved under Jerry Moore in the Southern Conference in the 2000s is what most people associate with Appalachian.

However, neglecting App State’s other sports in the name of football would be a true disservice to yourself in your time at Appalachian.

This is because, while perhaps not as popular, App State’s other sports are home to a collection of very fine student athletes who, like the football team, give their all for their school in every game they play.

Even better, these other sports generally take place during the week and can offer much needed study breaks when school life begins to stress you out.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams are both talented squads with great players and even better coaches.

Women’s head coach, Darcie Vincent, accepts nothing but hard work, and has the ladies playing tremendous basketball. The squad went 13-16 last season, but lost only four times in 11 tries at home.

The ladies are always ready to defend their home court and seeing the players buy into Vincent’s system is a sight to see.

The men’s basketball team, having parted ways with head coach Jason Capel after a 9-21 campaign last season, begins an exciting new era with the

enthusiastic and charismatic Jim Fox as head coach.

Fox served as an assistant at Davidson for 13 years, during which time the Wildcats went 288-131. Fox has some intriguing pieces to work with and will have some interesting matchups with unfamiliar Sun Belt foes next season.

The baseball and softball teams are always fun to follow and go see live.

The baseball stadium, while quite a hike from most everything else on campus, is a beautiful place to catch a ballgame and head coach Billy Jones always has his squad ready to play.

Despite a slow start this past season, the baseball team rallied to finish 2134 and were above .500 at home with an 11-7 mark.

The softball team, which went undefeated at home during the 2011-12 campaign, was slowed down a bit this season as it went 19-32 overall and just 5-9 at home. However, the girls are always passionate and willing to put on a good show in front of the home fans at the softball stadium, located right behind Kidd Brewer Stadium.

In addition to these sports, everything else App State has to offer is certainly worth checking out during your time here.

Whether it’s soccer, wrestling, volleyball, golf, tennis, field hockey or track and field, you will always find athletes who take pride in their school and want to win for you and Appalachian.

The bottom line – support all of the Mountaineer athletes. In the end, you’ll be glad you did.

How to attend your first App State football game

by Cory Spiers Sports Editor So, you’ve settled on Appalachian State for college, and chances are you’ve heard a lot about the football team.

The Mountaineers, led by Jerry Moore when the team still participated in Southern Conference play, won three-consecutive FCS National Championships from 2005-07 and left a lasting impact on the 2007 season with a road victory over the fifth-ranked Michigan Wolverines.

I’m here to tell you, going to a game isn’t all that hard. However, there are a few key things to keep in mind before you head to The Rock.

Get a large group together Games are always more fun when you have a few buddies with you.

Whether it’s some people from the floor of your residence hall, or some folks visiting from out of town, few things are a better good time for a group than an App State football game. Assemble your friends and get pumped up for the game.

Tailgate If you don’t have a spot, just stay in the residence hall and have some soda and listen to whatever music pumps you up for the game. Do it.

When you head to the stadium for the game, make sure to leave pretty early. The student section fills up very quickly, so if you want prime location in the bleachers, or any location at all, you should plan to arrive at least a couple hours before the scheduled kickoff time.

Arriving early will ensure you get a spot, but remember to dress smart.

Dress appropriately Sure, there are the brave souls who decide to wear no shirt to games

File Photo | The Appalachian played in freezing temperatures, but if you choose comfort over audacity, you should always check the weather before the game and come bundled up and prepared for anything.

The first couple games of the year are generally very pleasant and mild, with temperatures usually reaching between 50 and 65 degrees, but once October begins to grow old, things change drastically.

Basically, prepare for the cold. It’s always better to have too many layers and be forced to remove them than to be cold and not enjoy the game.

In addition to the cold, keep in mind that it can start raining at seemingly any time in Boone. And with the cold, that means snow can creep up, too. It never hurts to bring a rain jacket to the game and maybe some warm, waterproof shoes or boots.

Be loud Above all, enjoy the game. The Rock is a truly special place to catch a football game, and to have the chance to do so for free every Saturday is an incredible gift. Cherish and respect it by kindly donating your voice to the cause.

Nestled in the mountains of the west side of campus, you have likely never experienced such an atmosphere. The stadium is also small enough to give off an intimate vibe to the game, but large enough to house enough App State fans to make things very difficult for the opposition.

There are snacks and drinks available at the game, but do yourself a favor and don’t miss a second of the action, particularly in your first game.

With App State’s move up to the big boy FBS beginning this season, there’s never been a more exciting time to witness App State football in person.

So bundle up, nourish yourself before the game and get ready to get loud. Ensuring folks hear you in Charlotte is the final step in making sure your App State football experience is remembered forever.

How to have a good time in Boone’s nightlife

Being underage and trying to navigate the college nightlife scene can be difficult, but there are plenty of places freshmen can still have a good time out in Boone.

Some bars in Boone, such as Parthenon Cafe on Highway 321, let in under-aged students marked with black Xs on both hands before 10 p.m.

If you’d rather sing than dance, Galileo’s on West King St. has karaoke every Friday night. They also hold trivia nights on Mondays and sometimes feature local bands.

Black Cat, a burrito joint located on South Depot St., is another popular venue for local artists, featuring live music on the third Friday of every month.

How to get back home without a car

by Nicole Caporaso News Reporter A lot of students on campus don’t have a car, whether it be because of the pricey cost of parking spaces and gas or simply because they don’t think they need to have it here at Appalachian.

Quite possibly the biggest worry of a student without a car is how to get home.

There are actually quite a few ways that are pretty simple.

Find someone driving home that lives close to you.

Ask your friends how they’re getting home, find a friend of a friend that lives near you who is driving home. Post on the Appalachian State Facebook page for your class and ask if anyone will be driving to your area. Make sure to say that you will help chip in for gas money, that will usually make someone more inclined to allow you to tag along for the ride.

Take the bus.

An awesome thing about our uni-

versity is that they offer daily, round trip bus routes. The tickets are all for reasonable prices, students with a valid ID even get a discount. Buses leave Appalachian every day, going to Lenoir, Newton-Conover, Lincolnton, Gastonia, Charlotte, Wilkesboro, Hamptonville, Winston-Salem and Greensboro. If you don’t live exactly in one of those cities, choose the one closest to your home and have someone pick you up.

Use Zimride.

App State is very eco-friendly and

part of its sustainability initiative has partnered up with Zimride. Zimride is a website that will connect you with other people that are traveling the same way. You can log into Zimride using your Appalachian email address and create your profile. You simply post where and when you want a ride and you will be matched with another student who has spare seats in their car.

How to deal with a bad roommate

One of the biggest adjustments in coming to college as a freshman is sharing a small dorm room with someone 24/7.

It can be especially tricky if you have never previously met this person, you’re not quite sure how this person behaves or what they like and don’t like.

Of course, I’ve heard roommate success stories in which the two roommates become best friends and live happily ever after. However, I have more often heard horror stories about roommates who constantly fight or don’t talk to each other at all.

If you aren’t the biggest fan of

Sign the roommate agreement at the beginning of the year and if necessary, write up your own.

Print out the roommate agreement that University Housing has created. It lays out the rules, such as what time each of you would like to turn out the lights on a weekday or if it’s okay to talk on the phone while your roommate is studying or sleeping. If you don’t feel like it covers enough, write your own roommate contract and nicely ask your roommate to take a look at it.

If there is an issue you would like to discuss with

your roommate, communicate in person.

Communication via technology can be easily misconstrued and interpreted in a way not intended.

If your roommate does something you don’t like, such as leave their stuff on your side of the room or play music at 3 a.m., tell them in person that it has created a problem.

Have someone mediate.

If you feel that you absolutely cannot talk to your roommate in a reasonable manner, have someone mediate a discussion. Ask a neutral party such as your resident assistant.

Choose your battles wisely.

It’s natural for someone you’re living with to get on your nerves sometimes, but if you are bothered by your roommate at all times, you shouldn’t make it known. Telling your roommate that you hate every little thing they do can just lead to an extremely hostile environment when the two of you are in the room, and that won’t help anything. Don’t nitpick, only bring up the important issues.

Last resort: Room change.

University Housing does not allow room changes during the first two weeks of the fall and spring semesters. But, if the situation is irreconcilable, see your resident director for instruction on moving to a new room.
