History of Halloween KyRee Fultz, Staff Halloween is one of the most popular holidays in the US. Kids look forward to dressing up as their favorite characters and going door to door knocking, hoping for their desired candy. Halloween takes place every year on October 31st; however, it is not a federal holiday meaning people do not get school or work off on that day. Halloween originated as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. This would soon evolve as later in the eighth century, Pope Gregory III decided to make November 1 as a time to honor all saints. This created a holiday known as “All Saints Day.” Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Eventually as time passed, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes, and eating treats that we see today.
