October, More Than a Month of Pumpkins

The month of October has its view of being a month of haunted houses, pumpkins, trick or treating and hay rides. October also has a role in altering events that have shaped the world as we know it. This month gave birth to some of the greatest entrepreneurs, such as Ray Kroc born on October 5th, 1902 (the mastermind of McDonald's franchise), Pablo Picasso born on October 25th and the richest man alive today, Bill Gates born on October 28th. These men have changed our perspective and view on technology and the arts (culinary included).

This month also holds dates that are saddening to recall; dates that remain in the minds and hearts of the people trapped in time. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 on October 8th, the San Francisco earthquake that shook the Candlestick Stadium on October 17, 1989 and the infamous Black Thursday of October 29th that led the United States into a devastating snowball of disaster. This month has so many key roles from defining the freedom of the new world to giving us people who have changed our civilization, and all the way to solemn days of remembrance that we hold as a blueprint to never return.

Plea of the Pumpkin +by Hannah Faith Villareal, Editor-in-Chief Pumpkins have existed since the dawn of time as a native squash of North America. It comes from the long lineage of the squash plant with ribbed skin, a lovely orange complexion, a variety of sizes and to an extent, even shape. However, this wonderful squash has fallen victim to the “hunting season” during October and November.

First they are captured before being chosen to either become hollowed out to have their corpses be put on display for human entertainment, or to be ripped open mercilessly for the nutrients they hold inside in order to transform into the human delicacy known as pumpkin pie, and a new innovation, the pumpkin spice latte. Turkeys fear only November, pumpkins have to fear both November and October.

This pitiful squash was chosen to be the ultimate squash sacrifice for autumn while their cousins (the acorn, the butternut, the

kabocha, the delicata, and the calabaza) all get to live a life free from massmurder. They are mocked by their relatives for being the accursed ones that must be slain in large quantities each year. Families are torn apart. Lives are lost.

I write on behalf of the pumpkins, spare them! Let their cousins feel their pain. Let the other squash have their turn. Down with the tradition of orange jack-o-lanterns! Down with the tradition of a singular squash

Festive Attire

Have you ever been present or seen a national holiday where people dress up as fictional or goofy figures? What is the reason for dressing up? Putting on costumes has been a human tradition since the dawn of time. We use costumes for endless reasons and these are several examples: One reason for dressing up in costumes is because of religious traditions. Religion has been a part of human tradition just as long as costumes have. They dress up as one of their idols or gods and use that costume as a type of celebration for their knowledge or experience within that religion or belief. You

can find these religious festivals everywhere around the world. One of the most practiced and well known costume festival is held in Mexico for the “Day of the Dead”. This tradition is held to honor and reconnect with dead loved ones. Thousands of people around the world celebrate this with food, festivities, and, of course, costumes.

Another reason for wearing different costumes is because of national holiday. Holidays are no game and usually taken very seriously especially in America. On known dates such as October 31 and December 25, everyone participates

“Only time can tell” is such a misguided phrase. The future is wide and wavering.

Let’s face it the unknown is terrifying. Anxiety about what could happen or what won’t happen is alive in every one of us, but what if time wasn’t the only thing that could tell?

What if you could take a dip into the future?

Yes, I’m talking about fortune telling. As Halloween approaches, everyday normal people feel more comfortable to come out of their average, boring, safe self and venture out into the magical and mystical world of spirits and magic.

So, what’s a fortuneteller anyway? And what could they possibly tell me about me?

Let’s start here: fortune tellers don’t necessarily pertain to a person with a crystal

ball- they don’t even have to pertain to a person at all. Fortune tellers can be in many forms and shapes, they range from advice to keep in mind for your future to extremes of foretelling events. Everybody at least once in their lifetime has encountered a fortune telling, whether it be as simple as a fortune cookie at a Chinese restaurant. There are, of course, more extreme tellers that many of us have never encountered before, of those include, tasseography, tarot cards, crystallomancy, and chiromancy. From these you can be told about your future and what it might behold. Fortune tellings cannot directly tell you explicitly what will happen, but it can provide hints or feelings toward future events to come. Most psychics work

Halloween, a holiday where little children travel the streets in the dark of the night in search of candy from strangers, has hidden dangers under the enthusiasm of scares and horrors. Be cautious parents of the festivities of this holiday.

Children are going from a variety of houses for candy, which may or may not have been tampered with. There are many online tutorials that teach their audiences to discretely inject hot sauces or illegal substances into all types of candies. With these tampered sweets, they give them to children as an idea of a “prank”. There have

One of the most common candy choices during this time is candy corn. The fun size bite is yellow, orange, and white and is a usually a triangle shaped candy.

Spiral Candy Forests

by Haven Ernst, Staff We all have that one house around the block that hands out fruits or veggies for Halloween. That’s no fun. Don't be the lame healthy parents on Halloween. The whole point of trick or treating is to get FREE CANDY, NOT FRUITS OR VEGGIES. We could get those from Halloween is the one holiday where candy corn seems to exist, but no one seems to be handing it out to trick or treaters. Why is that? No one has the answer.

Every year kids go our parents or guardians any day, but Halloween is the one time in a year that we get free candy that our parents or guardians don't have to buy for us.

I see, you see, we all see candy. Halloween is the one night in the whole year that we get to express ourselves without actually being ourselves. Don't ruin someone's fun night with some healthy food. We get to dress up as someone we aren't, and hand out candy we may not particularly like. Halloween: Behind the Scenes

by Jordan Ritchie, Staff Halloween is known as a holiday dedicated to our dearly departed, where we get into the ghostly spirit and hang up skeletons and cobwebs, go on crazy shopping sprees at those lovely stores that only open for about two months a year. But in the years since it first began, when was it established that dressing like a provocative pirate will honor the dead? I assume it was around the time it became a tradition to display decorated squash outside our houses, right? And why do we allow kids to knock on the doors of all the houses in the neighborhood and ask for food? “Don't take candy from strangers, kids!...unless if you show up at their house in the middle of the night and you're dressed up as Spider-Man, then it's fine.” I assure you, there is a reason for every twisted thing we do on this beloved holiday. Let's go behind the scenes of Halloween…

The origins of Halloween date back to over 2,000 years ago when the Celts would take part in an ancient festival called Samhain. The Celts celebrated their new year on November 1st—which marked the end of summer and the beginning of a dark, morbid, winter—and believed that on the night before, October 31st, the barrier between the worlds of the living and the dead would become basically non-existent, allowing the dead to once again walk the Earth. The Celtic priests would light sacred bonfires to

sacrifice animals and crops to their gods, and the people would dress up as ghosts and demons to camouflage themselves as the real phantoms. And so, trick-or-treating came about when this festival evolved in the 16th century. The people would dress in their costumes and go house-tohouse singing songs in exchange for food. If they were unlucky enough to pass a demon, walking through the streets, they could go undetected, seeing as they looked just like them.

Soon, the night of the Samhain festival became known as All-hallows Eve, and soon enough… Halloween.

Some might wonder why during the Halloween season, orange and black are our choice colors. Orange represents Fall harvest, pumpkins, autumn leaves, and campfires. Black represents the dark night, spiders, witches’ hats, and cauldrons. They are opposites, representing the switch from a lively Autumn season to a dark winter.

One very popular tradition we still honor is the displaying of Jack O’ Lanterns outside our houses. This tradition originated from an old Irish legend about a man named Jack, who took much pleasure in playing terrible pranks on everyone, including the Devil. Jack blackmailed the Devil into promising to not send him to Hell when he died. Reluctantly,

the Devil gave in and promised not to take Jack’s soul. Years later, Jack finally died, and he approached the gates of heaven, but because of the life he lived, he was denied his passage to Heaven. So Jack went down to Hell, but the Devil kept his promise and didn't allow him in either, so Jack was forced to wander alone in the dark forever. So the Devil tossed him an ember and a turnip, and Jack hollowed it out and placed the ember inside, using it as a lantern to guide him. On Halloween, the Irish would hollow out turnips and light them to ward off evil spirits and Stingy Jack. When Irish immigrants in America discovered that pumpkins were a better alternative to turnips, they began using them instead. They soon became known as Jack O’ Lanterns.

Hopefully, after reading this we can all see this beloved holiday in a refreshing fun way.

The Celebration of Life

October is here and with this month comes the festivities of one of our favorite holidays: Halloween. However, in specifically central and southern Mexico along with other Latin American cultures, this means the time to remember and celebrate those who have died with a spirited festival: Día de los Muertos. This tradition is a melding of Aztec and Catholic beliefs that date back almost 3,000 years ago. It begins on November 1, Día de los Angelitos, when family and friends remember children who have died. In order to be good hosts and not offend the dead, there is an observably

joyous attitude to this holiday. On this day, families leave out toys, candies, and atole, a sweet masa drink, for returning souls of the children to play with and eat.

November 2 is known as Día de los Muertos. It is believed that on this day, those who have died as adults return to Earth for one day to visit their friends and family.

Vibrant marigolds and papel picado are placed at altars (called ofrescas) along with candles, tequila, pan de muerto, and other foods to guide spirits home and greet them as they complete their spiritual journey.

One legend also tells of someone found hanging on the It’s a Small World ride and the animatronics coming to life, moving after park hours, since the death of this little boy.

Whether or not these areas are actually haunted or are just the subject of wild imaginations, no one can really know for sure, except by going there yourself. Enter the attractions at your own risk, if you dare.

Halloween Spooky Scary Urban Legends

As the month of October progresses, themes of monster and ghouls become commonplace because of Halloween. The most common origin of these monsters creatures come from and are influenced by popular urban legends. These types of stories thrive on people’s deepest fear and from people’s wonder of the mythical and mysterious. These urban legends can range from tales of unexplained murders to mysterious disappearances.

One of the most popular and well known urban legends is Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary is a disturbed soul that inflicts pain and suffering upon those who attempt to summon her. Mary was a young girl that was described as having great beauty, but a terrible accident had left her disfigured.

People started to avoid her because of her disfigurement, and she feared that she would

lose her mind if she saw her own reflection.

One night, Mary decided to look at her reflection in one of the rooms in her house.

The young girl saw her face and panicked and screamed. Mary, wanting to obtain her reflection before the accident, leapt into mirror to find it, vowing to disfigure anyone looking for her. This old legend has played part in popular society as it was common for children at sleepovers to tell this tale and try to summon Bloody Mary in the bathroom mirrors. Many interpretations have been made of the meaning behind the Bloody Mary legend, but most, however, have been attributed to a child’s overactive imagination.

A legend that hits a little closer to home is the Legend of the Turnbull Canyon in California. This canyon is a 49,000 acres rock formation that is sandwiched between the

Puente Hills. This canyon has been attributed to many deaths and disappearances. It also doesn't help that Native Americans called it “Hutong” because of the slaughter of Natives during settlers attempts to assimilate the Indians by “converting” them to Christianity.

These disturbed souls apparently reside in the canyon and attack the poor souls that are foolish enough to come near. One of the most noted happinings is the crash of a plane and the deaths of all the passengers in the early 50’s or the college kids that burned to death due to high voltage in the 60’s. This is especially concerning as all power in the area has been cut off. Regardless, Turnbull Canyon has caused the death of hundreds.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in the United States (breastcancer.org).

Considering that the population of women in the U.S. is around 130 million, this means about 12 percent of them will develop this cancer at some point in their life. Though these odds are harsh enough, many women avoid getting checked for breast cancer.

There is a stigma around the idea of cancer in one's breasts that cause women to feel ashamed of getting checked. Breast cancer is a life threatening illness, that when not treated, will get out of control and become terminal. Early diagnosis is key to preventing this disease from absolute destruction.

Women who are too embarrassed to get periodic check-ups will increase the chances of the cancer growing if they do have cancer.

The stigma develops when people avoid talking about the subject because it's a cancer of the breasts.

Breasts have been an object of suppression for centuries. Breasts are exclusive to women and in the patriarchal history of our society, women are inferior and lessimportant. A breast cancer specialist, Larry Norton of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, says, "I remember in the '80s when I couldn't say the word 'breast' in a public meeting, if there were men in the audience, I had to say 'mammary gland.” Giving attention to female problems has never been a factor in the history of America. For example, nobody feels comfortable referring to women’s periods in public because it is a condition of women. In the eyes of the judgemental public overrun by patriarchism, it shouldn’t be talked about, adding to the stigma and encouraging shame amongst women in speaking of natural conditions.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and it's important that we recognize cancer as a disease, just as the flu, and avoid adding to the negative aura by using it in a shameful manner. Rather, we should be supportive and encouraging women who are getting checked or who have been diagnosed. We should be openly speaking about it regardless of who is in the room, and regardless of if anyone will feel uncomfortable. The first step to solving a problem is recognizing it, and, if we keep shaming women for something they can't control, they will not be able to be treated if they have the cancer.

Time for us to stop the stigma and treat breast cancer for the illness it is.

NBA’s Most Monstrous Teams

As the NBA season has begun, it’s going to be a rather interesting season, or that’s what some people think. Last year’s conference championship between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warrior ended in a completely lopsided battle as the Warriors easily breezed through for the title.

With the new addition of Kevin Durant and Zaza Pachulia, the Cavaliers inevitable defeat was set as their first game was on its way.

Due to the Warrior’s dominating performance in the championship finals, other teams race to develop a superteam to stand a chance of dethroning the Warriors.

The OKC Thunder, Houston Rockets, and Boston Celtics have all acquired more members to enhance their team. Since the Thunder have now acquired their big three star players-Carmelo Anthony, Paul George, and Russell Westbrook-will their combined efforts knock the Warriors out of the finals so they can face the Cavaliers?

Although the Cavalier have developed one of the most stacked rosters, will they be able to reach the conference finals again this year? I believe they will have an easier path to the finals than the Warriors because the migration of some NBA All-Stars to the West Conference. The Cavaliers have nothing to worry about as their only challenge is the Washington Wizards in playoffs because of their newly acquired teammates that will be dominating the East. This newly formed superteam consists of Dwyane Wade, Derrick Rose and Isiah Thomas. This “Warrior Scare” as I call it, has forced many teams to build the biggest, scariest superteam, making many players leave their teams just to join a winning team.

However, some players have stayed faithful to their team. The Spurs, for example, have not been desperately looking for new star players and have remained with their old winning roster, giving them a

chance to defeat any super teams that come in their way. The Spurs’ fearsome determination along with the combined efforts from the players and coach is going to be a difficult obstacle to overcome in the Western Conference Playoffs. They stayed loyal to their players, unlike the Celtics that heartlessly traded Isaiah Thomas for Kyrie Irving in the offseason. Isaiah Thomas played his heart out during playoffs last year through his hip injury and the loss of his sister in a car crash. Despite his emotions, he dropped 33 points the first playoff game the day right after he found out his sister had died. His efforts and passion for the organization seemly wasn’t enough for the Danny Ainge, the general manager for the Celtics, and he was shipped away with Jae Crowder and Ante Zizic to Cleveland. This inexcusable trade is one of the many effects the Warriors had on the NBA.

Until Dawn is an interactive drama/horror survival game that came out for the PS4 on August 25, 2015. This game, developed by Supermassive Games, was published by Sony for PS3 in 2014 and reintroduced for PS4 in 2015. This game takes place in the mountains of Western Canada. It tells the tale of a group of teenagers coming back to the Blackwood Mountain Cabin after the one year anniversary of the death of two of their friends.

Until Dawn is set up like any interactive game. For those who don’t know, an interactive game is a game in which the game proceeds like a movie with the only difference being that the choice you make influences other elements of the story such as the relationships with other characters.

Basically, it is a choose your own adventure story. Until Dawn takes full advantage of the new features that come with the PS4. One such feature is the gyroscope function which in the game requires the player to make their controller as still as possible. This adds some depth into the game as you, the player, are trying to remain motionless in real life with

the game character remains motionless with you. A unique feature of the game is the Butterfly Effect which means that any action or choice the player makes in the game will have consequences later down the road. The Butterfly Effect creates multiple endings within the game and erases the line between the right and wrong choice. I personally think that this makes the game more realistic. It is that moral dilemma that it imposes among players. It is possible to save all eight characters, though that in itself is very difficult to achieve. Another feature of the game is its psychoanalysis feature. It shares this feature with other horror games. This feature allows the game to conform to the player’s fears.

Moving on from the features to the game itself, Until Dawn is a unique piece of work.

The setting of the game may be a bit cliche seeing as how it is in a cabin in the woods.

However, the realism makes up for this. The amount of detail that went into modeling each person and the environment is amazing. It literally looks like they modeled each individual needle on the pine. It is also

historically accurate. Many people tend to overlook the fact that the antagonist of the game is the sister of one of the characters.

She is a wendigo. A wendigo is a cannibal spirit that possesses a person after they have resorted to cannibalism to survive. Its weakness is fire. These key points of the myth are covered by the game. The characters of the game will either grow on you or make you choose wrong choices.

Whatever the effect is on the player, the characters are very unique and lifelike considering that there rigs were used as their appearance in the game.

For the rating, I think this game receives 8.9/10. This game is one of the most realistic, interactive games I have ever played. This game is a must have for anyone who wants to manipulate the outcome of a horror movie made to lash out at your deepest fear
