The Beginning of Thanksgiving by Raymond Ali, Staff

Thanksgiving is a national holiday that today is celebrated by many countries, including Japan, Canada, Germany, America and more. It started in 1621 with Native Americans and colonists coming together for an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged as one of the first thanksgiving celebrations. You may ask “what caused this holiday?” It was the first ever harvest, a great harvest, and it was a cause for a celebration. It originated from a Plymouth Plantation in 1621, but it had not become a national holiday until President Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving to praise our beneficent father who dwells in the heavens and to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. It is still celebrated today because it is a national holiday and people nowadays want to sit back and relax while enjoying the harvests with a feast. Even though Thanksgiving originated in the

Plymouth Village, Canada still celebrates it. As a matter of fact, they celebrated long before Europeans settled in North America. The only difference between Canada and America is that Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, and around the same part of the year in other places. Nowadays people often celebrate Thanksgiving in numerous ways. Why is it such a huge holiday and being strongly carried on to this day? Why is there an estimate of 46 million turkeys being eaten on Thanksgiving in just America? If one year

everyone cut back on turkey feasting, would something be missing? I think so. Thanksgiving is a time to bring family together from all around the world, a time to sit back and enjoy time together and feast on a Thanksgiving turkey and enjoy the little things.

What is Black Friday really? by Zion Trunell, Staff

The holiday season gets closer as people prepare for Thanksgiving and Christmas over the next couple of weeks. These holidays often bring feelings of joy and happiness. The holiday season also brings families and people closer together as many people usually give to those less fortunate. People become more generous and likely to be kind to each other. Despite the festivities of the holidays, there is one day that often disrupts the common cheer of the holiday spirit. This day is known as Black Friday. Black Friday is the day that many people give into their selfish desires, and succumb to the blackhearted feeling of greed that everyone has. Black Friday may as well be one of the most celebrated holiday in America, as it symbolizes true American capitalism. Huge corporations sell expensive

objects, such as TV, video games, cameras, etc for discount prices on this one Friday of the year. People rush to stores hours before they open just to be able to be the first in line for certain products such as Androids or Iphones for discounted prices. Due to successful marketing campaigns, Black Friday is one of the most biggest annual retail revenue accounting for about 30% of revenue made in the retail market. Black Friday has also been shrouded in controversy as it is often chaotic and violent as people topple each other in search for what they believe are great deals. The event alone has accounted for numerous deaths and injuries inflicted upon customers. Many people can become violent when they are stingy and greedy, as many shoppers have swindle others to get what they want. Fights

and shootings have often occurred on Black Friday as conflicts arise from shoppers fight over who gets to keep a product. Regardless of good deals and cheap prices, Black Friday has disrupted what the holidays were originally about. Thanksgiving is starting to feel rushed as many people are rushing to stores and malls to either work or participate in Black Friday. Black Friday allows those to spend money and receive luxury items that they wouldn’t be able to before, but the greed ruins the meaning of the holidays. So when society runs over each on Black Friday to get the best the deal, try to slow down and enjoy yourself. Remember that not getting on a headset or a Xbox one is not the end of the world.

Hope in the Face of Destruction by McKenna Morris, Staff

The beginning of October brought one of the worst tragedies California has ever faced in a blaze of smoke and destruction. Over twenty separate wildfires fueled and spread by high, unruly winds, burned across the Santa Rosa, Napa, Yuba, Lake, Solano, Mendocino, and Sonoma Counties, destroying valuable land and crops, destroying homes and businesses, and taking forty-two lives. Local residents have lost nearly everything - their houses, their schools, their possessions, their neighborhoods, and even their loved ones. The fires that started on October 8th have scorched more than 200,000 acres of California wine country, leveling over 8,900 structures and forcing 100,000 people to evacuate. Power has still not been restored to some neighborhoods, and hundreds of neighborhoods and businesses continue to struggle with limited cell service and a multitude of utilities. Those who return to their homes often are met with the remains

of a chimney with nothing but ashes surrounding it; numerous photographs of the charred remains of once-successful wineries and restaurants have surfaced, laying bare the magnitude of destruction these communities have experienced. Together, the fires have killed more people than any other California wildfire in recorded history. However, the communities, the state, and the country are coming together to face this catastrophe. Dozens of firefighters have been injured fighting these fires, and more continue to endeavor in monitoring and controlling the blazes. Several members of Congress have attended county meetings, promising federal assistance to those in need. According to U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the Environmental Protection Agency has assessed 740 properties for signs of hazardous material endangering the water supply, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has given out $6 million worth of insurance and assistance to displaced Californians. The

Add pumpkin to the marshmallows along with cinnamon and pumpkin spice. 4. Toss in rice Krispy cereal and stir. 5. Pour mix into 9x13 greased baking pan, cover with parchment paper and press into pan. 6. Allow to cool, and enjoy! Spice up your holiday season and start baking sweet treats!

Local Assistance Centers in Santa Rosa and Sonoma are open, offering services and information for residents impacted by the fires. There are also many opportunities for individuals to support the victims of the fires and those working to help them. State Senator Mike McGuire and the Redwood Credit Union have collaborated to create the North Bay Fire Relief Fund to assist fire victims and aid relief efforts. 100 percent of donations will go directly to support those affected. Northbayfiredonations.com is a searchable database that is updated daily with nonprofits, events, services and more supporting fire relief. The Napa and Sonoma County Fire Relief Campaign is collecting money that will go directly to those who deserve it most: the brave men and women fighting the fires. The funds will be distributed to organizations such as the Sonoma Valley and Fire Rescue Authority, Napa County Fire Department and Lake County Fire and Rescue. These websites and organizations are just the bare bones of the countless efforts of both local and nationwide businesses and associations to subsidize and morally support their fellow Americans. When Californians come together to help their neighbors, there’s nothing they can’t accomplish with love in their hearts.

Common Sense, Who Has It? by

Haven Ernst, Staff

Did you know that there's a day for common sense? It is called the National Common Sense Day. It is on November 4th and originates from a man named William Penn Adair Rogers, who once stated that “common sense ain’t common”. What is common sense? Common sense is having a good sense of judgement in practical moments. William Rogers grew up in Oologah, Cherokee nation, now known as Oklahoma. He was an actor, humorist, author, and pundit. He was also known as a cowboy in the Wild West. Rogers quit school in 1902 to travel with circuses and do “wild west” shows. He became known for his humor and lasso skills,

and he later graduated to Vaudeville and Broadway. The audiences loved him and his rope tricks. He performed in public for the first time on Broadway, playing a role in The Wall Street Girl. This also lead to another performance in 1916, when he participated in Ziegfeld Follies. Rogers also participated in many silent shows and mime acts. As well as being an actor, Rogers became known for his writing abilities and skills. He also had a special column in the Saturday Evening Post newspapers. His column consisted of the views of the issues from a small town's perspective on a moral level, all while recognizing the hard work of the working people. A few of his books are The

Cowboy Philosopher on Prohibition and There’s Not A Bathing Suit In Russia-those were also two of his best sellers. He also got the chance to work with a well known director from his time in 1930, John Ford. He got produced in a few of Ford's films, such as Doctor Bull and The SteamBoat Round The Bend. After they stopped filming in the last Ford's films in 1935, Rogers set a plan to explore Alaska. The plane carrying William Rogers crashed at Point Barrow, Alaska. Millions all over grieved for a very long time. In 1991, they made a film named The Will Rogers to celebrate William Rogers’ life and the humor and vibrant colors he brought to all nations worldwide. Later, that film won a Tony award for best directing and best musical awards. So that's how November 4th became National Common Sense Day. William Rogers did not die in vain; he died with such a soft spirited heart.

What is Popularity by Grace Vierra, Staff Popularity is the state of being liked, admired, or supported by many others. Popularity is a position that many people try to attain because who doesn't want to be fawned over by people? But what is popularity? Who declares one person is more popular than someone else? The answer to these questions is based on society, therefore popularity is a social construct. From the eyes of man, appearance and how cool you are defines how popular you become. There is a certain style of “popular kids” that is seemingly so admirable from the outside. Popular kids are the pretty people on campus, the people who have fun and party, the people who dress the cutest, the people who have all the friends, and the people that seem to have everything together. Being popular looks amazing from the outside and I’m sure it feels great to live in a popular state, but what is the point? Devoting time and energy to high school popularity will get you nowhere, I promise you. In Loving Memory of Covfefe by McKenna Morris, Staff

Social media has irrevocably changed how people view and interact with the world internationally. From entertainment to sports, people now have access to many different perspectives. By far, American politics have seen one of the greatest transformations since the advent of social media. Specifically, Twitter has long been a trendy outlet for Americans and the rest of the world to express their opinions, and, in the case of politicians, advance their political agendas. One of the most popular advocates of tweeting happens to be our new president, Mr. Donald J. Trump. Since the dawn of Twitter in 2009, President Trump has been an exceedingly active participant in the development of internet politics, although any evidence of maturity through these past eight years proves more difficult to determine. Using Twitter to announce important occurrences, dispute ‘fake news,’ speak his mind, lash out at critics, and provide his fan base with fuel, Trump has definitely made a name for himself on the world’s fourth most popular social network. Ranging from the integrity of global warming to the consumption of Diet Coke, the

subjects of his tweets have frequently sparked widespread conversation, particularly that of the critical variety. President Trump’s Twitter career is an interesting creature; one characterized by varying degrees of intelligence, arrogance, hilarity, and controversy through his years of business management, celebrity status, and now presidency. In May, President Trump made his greatest contribution to the English language when he coined the word ‘covfefe’. In a nowdeleted tweet, Trump wrote, “Despite the constant negative press covfefe”. This incomplete mistake bewildered the Internet, and countless people set out to discover its true meaning, speculating its evasive definition while most others sat back and enjoyed a good laugh. Trump himself later addressed the issue, laughing it off and challenging his followers to figure out what this iconic word was supposed to mean. Covfefe became so common that Words with Friends, a very popular mobile word game, added it to its dictionary of accepted words. Mr. Trump also uses Twitter to discuss important issues such as global warming.

Another less amusing sentiment of President Trump’s is his opposition to the existence of climate change: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing noncompetitive.” Regularly circulated by the president’s critics, this tweet, along with its companions “Give me clean, beautiful and healthy air - not the same old climate change (global warming) bull… I am tired of hearing this nonsense,” and “This very expensive GLOBAL WARMING bull… has got to stop. Our planet is freezing, record low temps, and our GW scientists are stuck in ice” make very clear that Trump does not believe in global warming. These tweets also demonstrate Trump using the discussion of an important global issue to target his political adversaries with Twitter as his battleground. No one is safe from Trump’s 140 character wrath, whether they be Hillary Clinton, The New York Times, Rand Paul, Megyn Kelly, Barack Obama, the electoral college, or any of the other 300+ people, places, and things our president has insulted on Twitter. He may fire off tweets with ambitious abandon, but his words are not forgotten; they linger in our brains, making our minds go rotten. President Trump may be a formidable opponent, but perhaps he’ll be taken more seriously once Merriam-Webster no longer has to spell-check his tweets.

Pluck Him From the Peach Tree by Tanner Mendoza, Staff On October 18th, billionaire Tom Steyer spent $10 million to begin an ad campaign in an attempt to impeach President Trump. Steyer is a former hedge fund manager for Goldman Sachs as well as a political activist and environmentalist. He is a mega-donor to the Democratic party spending over $75 million in the 2016 campaign to rally millennials to vote, which succeeded in registering roughly 750,000 new voters. Now, he has established stations in New York and California to broadcast his advertisement urging people and politicians to support his cause. Steyer has argued that President Donald Trump has brought the U.S. to the brink of nuclear war, obstructed justice in the FBI, taken money from foreign governments, is mentally unstable and has threatened to shut down news organizations that showed opposition to his decisions all as grounds for

impeachment. In the first issue stated, Steyer was referencing the threats between President Trump and North Korean Dictator Kim Jong Un, in which both had threatened the use of military force against one another. The obstructed justice in the FBI was referring to the termination of James Comey as FBI Director. Steyer stated this as his most important point for grounds for impeachment because evidence suggests that Donald Trump had fired the director out of a need to protect his personal interests and not for the good of the country. This is because Comey was told to drop the investigation of Michael Flynn, in which he continued and was fired because of it. Flynn was later found to be involved in the potentially illegal removal of a Turkish cleric from the U.S. which led to another former FBI director, Bob Mueller, continuing the Trump-Russia investigation and pressing

charges against former members of his election campaign. The removal of money from foreign governments was in reference to the lawsuit against President Trump from Maryland and District Columbia attorneys regarding the violations of the Emoluments Clause. The NeedtoImpeach campaign is currently gathering signatures for a petition to present to Congress, along with following further investigations involving Trump’s past relations with Russia. Part of Tom Steyer’s belief is that it is the duty of American citizen to voice his or her opinion and that there is no moral reason to remain silent about the political affairs of our country, regardless of your stance. Visit the NeedtoImpeach website for more information behind the campaign and its case against President Trump.

The Review: Middle Earth: Shadow of War by Christian Ajos, Staff

Warning: Spoilers for the Shadow Of War game! Do you like orcs? Do you like dragons? Do you like Lord of the Rings? Then, this is the game for you! Middle Earth: Shadow of War is an open world action role playing game. It was developed by Monolith Studios and published by Warner Bros. The game was released September 28, 2017 and begins directly after Shadow of Mordor. This game uses features from the previous game and has new features. Players still play as the protagonist of the series, Talion. The combat system in Shadow of War is the same as Shadow of Mordor. Another returning feature is the Nemesis System. This feature is solely unique to this game. In this feature, the player can hunt down captains of the Uruk-Hai army to either dominate them or eliminate them. When using this system, players must first find worms within the Uruk-Hai ranks and interrogate them. This feature gives the player an endless list of targets to hunt down. Shadow of War also contains new features that the previous game did not have. The new features include the siege system, the shop, and various other features. The siege system allows the player to take over forts. Taking

over forts allows the player to control a region in Mordor. However, the siege system also has a betrayal system which means that any Uruk you dominate can turn on you. Another feature is summoning. With summoning, Talion is able to summon allies to his side in battle. For example, imagine that you are attacking a fort and need aerial support. Talion can just summon a dragon to aid him and rain fire and death to his enemies. The shop system in the game allows the player to purchase new gear. The gear is rated by rarity with common being the lowest and legendary being the highest. The plot of Shadow of War continues

straight off the plot of Shadow of Mordor. Talion and the elf lord, Celebrimbor, forge a http://www.dlcompare.com:8042/upload/cache/game_tetiere/u pload/gameimage/file/35646.jpeg

new Ring of Power to combat Sauron and his forces. New characters are introduced such as Shelob and Eltariel. These characters provide the player with missions which ultimately lead to the end of the game. The plot contains many plot twists. My favorite plot twist was when Celebrimbor betrayed Talion after Talion realized that Celebrimbor knew that the Rings of Power were corrupting the human kings. The main antagonist of the game is the eponymous antagonist of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, the Dark Lord Sauron. He is the lieutenant of the first Dark Lord, Morgoth. Sauron is a fallen Maiar and the creator of the One Ring. Sauron is the person manipulating the events of the game. One of the best scenes was when Talion was finally freed from Sauron’s control after he wore a Ring of Power. This secret ending is received after completing all objectives within the game itself. This alone will take hours upon hours of your time. Middle Earth: Shadow of War receives a 8.4/10. As someone who has played the first game, this game completes the circle. I personally recommend this game to any fan of Lord of the Rings.
