Our School System is Outdated Greg Santos, Design Editor “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” - Albert Einstein. Our current education system has set many inquisitive minds up for failure. Each student has a different strength and the modern-day school doesn’t expose them to enough opportunities for success. The misconception of getting perfect grades and scoring well on tests has left students terrified and unsure of what to do with the rest of their life. We need reform, or else more will discover themselves wasting undiscovered potential. School does not set kids up for the real world. Their knowledge of essential education has been the same, dating back to more than a century ago. Most schools require multiple years of subjects such as math, science, and history. However, there needs to be more of an emphasis on mental health, social interaction, finance, hygiene, etiquette, parenting, time management, etc. To give perspective, instead of learning intense mathematical equations that almost all students will never use in their adulthood, they should be learning about how the money system works. Instead of leaving high school with self-sufficiency and preparation for how the world genuinely works, we learn how to do y=mx+b and how the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
