Living Off the Grid Trisha Tran, Staff

In our current society, a popular dream is to be famous and surrounded by people. However, there is a group of individuals who want to do the exact opposite. Seemingly a completely isolating and dangerous desire, many adventurers and sustainability advocates have turned to live away from the masses and that trend continues to grow. Under the name “off-the-grid living”, these nature-lovers have dedicated themselves to living with limited to no modern technology, separated from society, and being self-sufficient. These people find themselves populating the rural outskirts of the U.S. and across the globe in regions, such as Australia, Italy, and other parts of Europe. The motivations span from pure personal curiosity to environmental statements and reveal the reality that off-the-gridliving is not as intimidating as you may think. The phrase “off-the-grid living” is derived from the process of electricity being distributed in a grid. The lifestyle itself has a wide spectrum with some implementing self-generated electricity and others completely avoiding any current technology altogether.
