Thank You Veterans! Luzerne County’s Veterans Affairs Office exists to honor veterans by helping them access a wide range of federal, state, and county benefits. The office assists with disability compensation claims for veterans who were injured or developed chronic illnesses during active duty. It also provides guidance on Aid and Attendance benefits, which help wartime veterans and surviving spouses pay for significant medical expenses such as assisted living or in‑home care. The Luzerne County Veteran Affairs has offices in Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton to assist you. For more information, go to

Additional services address health, housing, and daily living needs. Veterans can receive assistance enrolling in VA health care, and those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness are directed to specialized coordinators at the VA hospital. Bridging the Distance: Innovative Transportation Solutions The Luzerne County Transportation Authority (LCTA) welcomes new clients to its Senior Shared Ride Program.Seniors receive reduced‑fare transportation based on trip distance. The reduced rate was made possible through funding provided by the 65+ Lottery Program and the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Program. Co‑pays are determined by mileage, with rates increasing in tiers as trip distance grows. Rides are available Monday through Saturday, and appointments may be scheduled up to two weeks in advance. Next‑day rides must be requested before noon on the previous business day. Riders may bring no more than three grocery bags. Call the Luzerne County Transportation Authority officer at (570) 288-9356 or visit the LCTA website at https://www.lctabus.com/ for additional details. The LCTA also administers the Medical Assistance Transportation Program (MATP), which provides free transportation for Medical Assistance (Medicaid) recipients who need to travel to covered medical services. Eligible riders must have an active Medical Assistance card, live in Luzerne County, and be traveling to a Medicaid‑approved provider. MATP is not an emergency service. MATP offers several transportation options depending on the rider’s needs and location. LCTA may provide paratransit vehicles, accessible vans, or arrange for mass transit when appropriate. Riders who can use their own vehicle (or someone else’s) may receive mileage reimbursement at 12 cents per mile, plus parking and tolls with receipts.
The program operates Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aides may accompany riders under certain conditions, and children under 18 may be accompanied by a parent or guardian at no cost.

The Luzerne/ Wyoming Counties Mature Worker Program, also known as the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), is designed to help adults aged 55 and older reenter the workforce by providing job training and employment support. The program serves residents of Luzerne and Wyoming counties who meet federal low‑income guidelines. Because demand is high, applicants may experience a waiting period before a training slot becomes available. SCSEP positions are intended as a stepping stone rather than permanent employment, helping participants build skills and confidence that lead to better‑paying jobs. Participants receive on‑the‑job training at government or nonprofit agencies for 20 hours per week and are paid minimum wage for training time, approved classes, and program meetings. Training is tailored to each individual’s needs and may include clerical work, computer skills, social services, or assisting at senior nutrition sites. The program also offers assessments, testing, counseling, and referrals for additional classroom training when appropriate. Employers benefit as well, by gaining access to motivated trainees who are developing relevant skills through the program. Overall, SCSEP provides a structured pathway for mature workers to refresh their abilities, gain practical experience, and connect with employers seeking their skill sets. It supports both personal development and community service, helping older adults transition back into meaningful employment.
