I Hate Desks Alyssa Giugliano

I hate desks.

They’re quite odd, desks. I never found one that suited me.

They were always either too big. Or too small. Or the color was ugly. Or there was no basket for my books. Or the chair connected was too close to the actual desk. Or it was too far away.

But those are not nearly as important as The main reason I hate desks: They mean work.

And not artwork Or woodwork Or footwork

Or teamwork. Work work.

The worst kind: Independent, Worksheet-doing, Work. Ugh.

I grew up doing this kind of work At mannyyyyy different desks. But I figured the desk-work would eventually Stop. But it never did. And now I’m older And I’m wiser And I still hate desks, Even though I continue to work at them.

But I can’t help but wonder What the world would be like

Without desks.

Without worksheets And deadlines And tests.

Without wobbly legs

On uncomfortable chairs

Connected to too-far-away desks With no baskets for books.

Maybe there would be more artwork And woodwork And footwork And teamwork.

Maybe people would talk Instead of email Or text.

And maybe Just maybe People would stop Working to live And living to work

And just be.

And maybe they could even be happy. I know I would be.
