Kate Briscoe Geologica-Rockfaces

Capturing the Australian landscape is as difficult as harvesting raindrops. Many artists have attempted to tap that endless reservoir and, no matter how many images are forthcoming, the depths never seem to be completely plummeted. But every so often there are some crystalline images that cling to the surface of our own immediate, intimate catalogue of visual images as reminders of journeys or meditations on paths well-travelled. Over forty years of observing the Australian landscape, Kate Briscoe has traversed a physical and emotional landscape that forages below the gritty surfaces of Arnhem Land and The Kimberley. In doing so, not only has she explored the earthy surface of those stunning vistas but has also mined the alchemy that takes place when water and wind penetrate those extraordinary geological formations. The works in this exhibition embody the essential elements of earth, water and fire that have been the key elements that have shaped the landscapes of Australia. These are the landscapes that are subject to constant change and this artist has gained inspiration from many visits to the same places, the bodies of work from each journey develop and build into series. Geological shifts as profound as the history of the earth become the accompanists in that concert of compositions that transport vast exteriors to the interior of the studio. Elements as dry as the landscape, crevices as deep as the historical incisors from a time when earth movements shaped the contours of the land, form the basis for a series of rock faces. Those Rockfaces, as Kate Briscoe started naming them in 2006, create staggering pictorial statements that have the ability to capture those sensational geological shifts. These same statements also document an emotional path that took the artist to a deeper creative place. Was the Rockface more than a creative edifice? Were these pictorial platforms a range that needed to be scanned and scaled in order to ascend to the next craggy pinnacles? Landscape and realism stroll together with ease but the terrain stiffens with abstraction. It is that space where Kate Briscoe’s work reaches deep into an emotional experience, a place that is provided by the artist for the viewer to contemplate. It is this exploration that becomes the inspiration for so many of these carefully selected works that create a viewing platform for the artist and anyone who cares to walk with her through those liminal and transitional panoramas. - Nick Vickers
