Time and Time Again: Jumping Over Gravity
This body of works has its conceptual origins that trace back over years of making: cosmology, architecture, grids, organic, geometric . . . Some pieces fall into the category of ‘slow art’ taking years to finish whilst others produced more recently capturing qualities of both spontaneity and restraint. In this way, each piece is part of an unfolding narrative, a character, a player of threedimensional form a special substance in the very thick of things.
Having worked predominately in the field of abstract sculpture for some time, I’m beholden to a giant continuum with cultural roots embedded in ancient civilizations. For me, this genera offers tremendous scope for variability, creativity and the unknown. Not knowing precisely where I’m going adds to the blend of freeform, chance, uncertainty and contemplation. A certain mystery prevails. A sensibility, a spirit which sometimes surprises me where I end up. - Dan Wollmering
Dan Wollmering was born in St Paul, Minnesota and raised on a family farm near the Mississippi river-town of Hastings. After completing a BA (Visual Arts) St John’s University, he immigrated to Australia and commenced his extensive art & craft teaching career at: High School, State Teachers College, Richmond TAFE, Gippsland Institute, Chisholm Institute and finally culminated as Coordinator of Sculpture & extended media, Monash University. Throughout, has held 30 solo and work in over 80 group exhibitions in Australia and overseas. Securing public commissions and work in collections: Regional Galleries, Corporations and Universities, his work has focused on abstraction, creating sculptures in steel, bronze and wood. Completing an MA at RMIT and a PhD at Deakin University, his research interests include: popular culture, woodcraft, cosmology, ‘sculpitecture’, minimalism, rural architecture and synergies created between ambiguity and precision.
