Sometimes you need to take a leap of faith and follow your gut, so now we are presenting The Tipping Point, Amanda’s second ever solo exhibition. On one hand an emerging artist on the other hand it is her destiny. As a child of parents who are professional ceramicists, with a sister who is glass blower & jeweller, a brother who is a director / consultant for indigenous arts, an Uncle who is a curator, historian & writer, an Aunt who is also a curator/ director and much of her extended family in the performing arts, I guess this scientific researcher of agriculture and marine, a dive guide & instructor was always destined to make art. Spurred on by her husband Guy after he entered her work in a local art competition in 2020, Amanda Emmett has certainly arrived as a serious contender for being considered a significant Australian artist.

It was during late night session of scrolling through Instagram when I first came across Amanda Emmett’s work.
Could I really offer someone a solo exhibition whose work I had never seen in the flesh?

Who was the artist, why hadn’t I seen her work before?
Although only viewing her work on my phone I reached out to see if Amanda wanted to be included in our This is Planet Earth exhibition at our Federation Square gallery. She happily agreed and had planned to send down 3 works for the exhibition. Not long after that I had an unexpected opening in my Sorrento gallery calendar and my mind shifted directly to Amanda.
She had just recently had an exhibition in Cairns, and it was her richly detailed elements focusing on both the beautiful and disturbing, encouraging the viewer to appreciate the fragility of life on earth and question our impact on this fast-changing world, inspiring discussion, and innovative action that harnessed my attention.
In a world in transition, the fragility of the environment, our social behavior, what we consume and the pollution we create are dilemmas faced in mapping out a pathway of sustainable living and resilience.
Compelling us to linger, carefully considered details reveal the disturbing truths we often do not see but know. The repercussions of the choices we make, the reality we have created and where we are heading, inspiring us to consider positive changes for remedy and renewal.
Amanda grew up in a family of arts professionals encouraging her to explore what lies beneath the surface – to give feeling, form and function to abstract emotions and concepts.
