MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR! We are happy to welcome Blair and Jamie Nelson back to the Amelia Island Plantation! We first met Blair and Jamie in 2017 at a mutual friend's Spyglass villa. As you will see in their comments below, the Nelsons discovered the Amelia Island Plantation through their close friends who work at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. After helping the Nelsons sell their Marsh View Villa, our job was to help them find the perfect single-family-home. We are happy to announce that Blair and Jamie are the new proud owners of 111 Sea Marsh Road. Help us welcome them back to AIP! Can you tell our readers a little about your background? Where are you from? What is your educational and professional background? Your family? Jamie was raised in New York, went to the University of Pennsylvania for undergrad and Cornell for graduate school, where she earned an MBA. Her career has been dedicated to health care information technology and she is currently Senior Vice President and Chief Information officer at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Blair was raised in New Jersey and graduated from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Blair has worked nearly all of his career in the wealth management sector at Citi Group, where is his currently a Senior Vice President in New York City. Jamie and Blair have a combined family of four children, ages 21 to 29, and two dogchildren, Sam and Gigi.
MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR! How did you discover the Amelia Island Plantation? How do you plan to use your Plantation property? Jamie was introduced to Amelia Island Plantation by a colleague, Stephanie Goldberg, who has been a plantation property owner for many years. Almost immediately, Jamie and Blair set out looking for a home, and for several years owned a Marsh View Villa. Wanting something larger that could accommodate family and friends, they have recently purchased a beautiful home on Sea Marsh Road. Other areas they considered were coastal North and South Carolina, but Amelia Island offered the best in terms of natural beauty and a relaxed lifestyle. The proximity to the Jacksonville airport was a big plus. Jamie and Blair will be using their home part-time, while they are both working full-time in NYC. But this is their ‘forever home’ and they will become full-time residents in the future. They also own a home in New Paltz, New York in the Hudson Valley, which serves as a beautiful retreat in the Shawangunk Ridge. What hobbies or activities do you enjoy? Where is your favorite place to travel? Are there any activities or organizations you are excited to get involved with on Amelia Island? Jamie and Blair love the outdoors. They are avid golfers, love to hike, kayak, and bike ride. No wonder Amelia Island Plantation was their choice! They recently joined the Amelia Island Club and are looking forward to meeting new friends and enjoying all that the new facilities have to offer. How was your experience with the Miller Group? Exceptional, in a word.
PLEASE HELP US WELCOME JAMIE AND BLAIR TO THEIR NEW HOME AT AMELIA ISLAND PLANTATION!
FLORIDA GEORGIA For 51 weeks of the year, Amelia Island is evenly divided between University of Florida and University of Georgia fans. But the Georgia invasion comes a few days before the Gators and the Bulldogs battle at TIAA Bank Field the last Saturday of October or the first Saturday of November, as will be the case this year. It’s not as dramatic as pirates storming the waterfront at the end of Centre Street during the Shrimp Festival in May, but it’s still significant and it’s an invasion that merchants, business owners, hotel operators, vacation rental owners, and golf course professionals welcome with open arms. Here come the Dawgs - fans that is, with wallets open and spirits high. Educated guesses are that Georgia fans account for about 80 percent of the tourism Amelia Island experiences the week of the game. Most arrive in town beginning Wednesday or Thursday, fill up lodging from time-worn beachfront motels to the amenity-rich Ritz-Calrton and the Omni Amelia Island Plantation and proceed to eat, drink, shop and play golf. And as good as business gets before kickoff Saturday, Fernandina area merchants - even some of those who are Gator fans - hope for a Bulldog victory. If Georgia wins, the bulldog faithful come back after the game and party all night, spending more money. If they lose, they have a tendency to go back to their hotel rooms and then leave town the next day. The island makes an effort to be neutral. The same number of Florida and Georgia flags are hoisted on the waterfront at the end of Centre Street. Stores stock equal amounts of Florida and Georgia merchandise - even ornaments sold at Christmas on the River. For those readers who are unfamiliar with the Florida Georgia rivalry game, this all may seem a bit hyperbolic. It's just another college football game, right? Wrong. This rivalry is special.
FLORIDA GEORGIA For starters, the game is hosted at a neutral site with an equal number of tickets allotted to each school. The stadium is divided in half with a sea of orange and blue on one side and a sea of red and black on the other. The 50/50 split makes this one of the most exciting atmospheres in sports. Adding to this atmosphere is the pregame (and postgame) festivities which have earned this rivalry its infamous nickname, The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Although this nickname is no longer officially used, it's an accurate description of the tailgating scene surrounding the stadium. But it isn't just cocktails being served at this outdoor party. Some of the most delicious examples of tailgate cuisine can be found here, including a few favorite dishes served by our fellow Plantation property owners: Woo Hoo Chili by Nina Johnson (Georgia), Feta and Apple Spread by Nancy Jones (Georgia), Smoked Oyster Cheese Dip by Judy Pillans (Florida), and Corn Cucumber Salad by Kathy Miller (Tennessee fan who's forced to support Florida to keep the family peace). Anyone who cannot attend the game can still enjoy these dishes at home. All of the recipes (and more) can be found on Kathy Miller's website: www.KathyMillerTime.com.
Another way to join the festivities is to go to downtown Fernandina Beach on Friday evening (October 1st). You can start with a drink at the Palace Saloon or the Decantery and the head to your favorite downtown restaurant. But be warned...if you wear orange and blue, you will most likely experience at least one Georgia fan barking at you! Whether you are a Florida fan, a Georgia fan, or completely neutral, it's easy to see how our community benefits from this special college football rivalry. It has become an Amelia Island tradition and another reason we are honored to call this beautiful paradise home!
