Architects have the creative flair and technical capabilities to master lighting design, writes Felix Mara

A

rchitects are good at choosing attractive, well-engineered or crafted light fittings and, understandably, they usually have a keener instinct for light fittings that are compatible with their design vision than electrical engineers. They are also well positioned to visualise the lit quality of the spaces and volumes they design and a good technical education should prepare them to consider lighting levels, energy consumption, glare and other aspects of lighting performance. True, the subject has become more complex, but there are also more – and better – digital tools available to assist them. Some, such as Eva Jiřičná, even have skills and experience that rival those of accomplished lighting designers.

In an ideal world, the architectural and lighting concept would be conceived as one, rather than in sequence, with architects sometimes pleasantly bemused when they are presented with proposals to bathe their creations in violet, orange or green light.

Although lighting is the focus of this issue, the sub-theme is drama. In one sense of the word, drama is the purpose group of our main case study (page 28), David Hughes Architects’ Park Theatre, a retrofit

of a North London office building. This is design for drama. Some of the finer points of the field are discussed in our overview of lighting specification and design by the project’s architectural lighting designer, Dominic Meyrick of Hoare Lea, who explains Hughes’ unusual decision to provide natural overhead light in the performance spaces. The Park Theatre also has elements of design as theatre, with imaginative lighting of the foyers, bars, facade and auditorium seating. Our other case studies, however – both of which are located overseas – are more singular essays in design as theatre.

First, in Istanbul, Turkish practice Salon Architects’ unlikely starting point was the refurbishment of an office building’s interior for a law firm (page 42). In many ways this is a logical design exercise, with coded finishes and thoughtful planning, but the use of contrasting lighting and materials is also very striking. Second, an apartment interior in Rome’s Via Veneto, glamorised

by Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, the House of Dust (page 50) serves as an ideal springboard for fanciful lighting effects and architectural narrative – its designer Antonino Cardillo does not disappoint.

U

ptake of energy efficiency measures under the government’s flagship Green Deal remain woefully low as the scheme continues to struggle.

With just 13,000 homes a month being assessed, it could take 160 years to survey all the homes in the UK. Figures released by the Department of Energy and Climate Change show that 72,210 Green Deal assessments were completed during the first seven months of the scheme. However, the number of assessments taking place dropped by 559 from July to August.

WSP director David Symons said: ‘[There] isn’t anywhere near enough scale to make [the Green Deal] the transformative programme it could be. The government needs to up the ante to make this scheme a success, something we all want to happen.’

Only a dozen homes have completed the process and had energy efficiency measures installed.

The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) has renewed its call for incentives – such as stamp duty and council tax – to boost the scheme.

John Alker, director of policy and communications at UK-GBC, said: ‘Green Deal numbers are edging in the right direction but the scheme still needs a shot in the arm. If ever there was a time for the treasury to bring forward tax incentives to encourage energy efficiency, it is now. With winter approaching, and people beginning to switch on their heating, this is the ideal opportunity to help households protect themselves against rising fuel bills.’

MVHR failings cause NHBC to rewrite technical standards

Problems with MVHR (mechanical ventilation heat recovery) systems which are now commonplace in a quarter of all new homes, have caused the NHBC to introduce a new set of standards for their proper installation.

New research from the NHBC Foundation based on ten new homes built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6 in Slough found that there had been problems with all the installations. Nine of the units were re-commissioned and one was replaced after approximately one year of occupation. As a result of these failings the NHBC has announced it is introducing a new standard for MVHR to be included in the 2014 NHBC standards.

Paul Cribbens, standards manager at NHBC, said: ‘MVHR systems can offer significant benefits and increasing numbers of house builders use them as a practical and cost-effective way to meet ventilation and energy efficiency requirements. But these systems must be correctly designed and installed or design performance can be greatly reduced.’ Laura Mark

‘I don’t particularly like light fittings’, says lighting designer Paul Nulty

W

here have you come from?

I was director at Light Bureau for 11 years. I left in 2011, to set up my own practice: Paul Nulty Lighting Design. Our first job was for Kurt Geiger’s HQ.

What is your approach to lighting design? We don’t have a house style. I don’t particularly like light fittings. It should be about the approach and the effect of light. You don’t have a visual space without lighting. I always say if someone comments on the light source, we’ve not done it right.

How do you work with architects?

It is important that we collaborate and work with the architects on a scheme. Without this collaboration it will always look like the lighting was added on at the end. We need to get onto jobs earlier to allow this to happen. Often we don’t get involved in a project until too far down the line.

What are you working on?

We’re working on two palaces in Doha. In London one of our current projects is a 24-hour restaurant on Great Russell Street. This is an amazing project.

Capturing light is really important in a building which will be open for 24 hours.

How is energy efficiency incorporated into your lighting designs?

When looking at energy efficiency, people often confuse quantity of light with quality.

We do a lot of energy studies for clients – not very glamorous but they are very important. We’ve been working with TK Maxx to reduce the energy consumption of its stores by 20 per cent.

How do your projects in the UK differ from the work you do abroad?

In this country the attitude about how we use light is more thoughtful. In the Middle East you have to be more careful about design. The quality of finish is not as good there, so you have to design cleverly.

What are your top three lighting projects?

The Hoover Building by Imagination – not a particularly technical project but its use of coloured light was ground breaking – and the Nike World Store by BDP. Also Speirs + Major’s back catalogue.

sset management, repairs and maintenance, retrofit, sustainability and the supply of affordable homes are among the subjects to be discussed at Homes 2013, an annual seminar and exhibition taking place at ExCel London in November.

The seminar programme put together for this year’s event features speakers such as: Andrew Eagles, managing director of Sustainable Homes; Michael Newey, group chief executive of Broadland Housing; Jeremy Kape, director of property investment at Affinity Sutton; and Nicholas Doyle, project director at Places for People.

Specification is the guardian of quality, ensuring clients get value for money and what they paid for, explains Nick Schumann

D

esigners are in the business of creativity, followed by information production in a predetermined format, to a set quality level. Construction information is complex and has to be aligned with detailed contractual terms, in order to see the client’s investment realised to the satisfaction of all.

Specifications are crucial to this whole process as they represent, in a construction contract, what the client is buying. That is what a specification is: a contractual description of all the constituent parts of a building, such that when they are assembled a prime asset of a predetermined appearance, functionality and quality results.

In an ideal world the specification would include precise details of every single building element by name, component part, supplier, etc. all having been pre-tested and prototyped such that there are no surprises – we wish.

Specifications in the modern world have to be clever and intuitive, and as such there is no such thing as a standard specification, and certainly very few buildings of any scale or inclusive of any project-specific manufacturing process can be specified by the press of a button, or simply the collection of a list of manufacturers and products.

Even if that were possible, European regulations for the procurement of public buildings do not allow the naming of products and in many other parts of the world clients insist on listing at least three products and manufacturers for every element, which for natural materials or those of particular aesthetic appearance creates quite a challenge for the designer.

Time is the other factor to be considered; there is never enough time and getting a building on site as soon as possible is very important to most clients because they want their investment to start generating income or carry out their function for political reasons as soon as possible. The Cost-Quality-Time conundrum is now more critical than ever, so it is just as important for the specification to deal with elements

that have not been fully designed at the time of appointing the contractor, as it is dealing with those elements that have been fully designed.

In a design and build scenario, this is even more critical because nothing will be fully designed when the contractor is appointed, and the only defence the client and designer has against reduced quality is the specification included in the construction contract. Contractors are committed to complete the building on time and on budget, which during the construction process drives everything, but post-handover quality becomes the most important factor for success, as it is permanent, whereas time and cost are temporary and can be quickly forgotten.

The specification is therefore the guardian of quality, seeking to ensure clients get value for money and what they paid for. You wouldn’t accept a new car without the alloy wheels you ordered, just because the dealer said it was the only way they could meet the delivery date – and by the way, the price stays the same. The same should apply to buildings no matter how complex they happen to be.

So, some tips: 1. Understand the form of procurement and produce your specifications to suit.

2. Do not ignore elements that are yet to be designed in detail, rather provide the QS and tenderers with the best descriptions, visual requirements and performance criteria so that the QS can prepare an accurate, compliant, tender price.

3. If you are being novated to the contractor post-contract, remember that you will have to deliver the final detailed design based on your requirements, so make sure that they are achievable.

Lighting entertainment buildings ‘Hoare Lea Lighting’s theatre work falls into the two categories – heritage and contemporary,’ says partner Dominic Meyrick. ‘Heritage projects typically involve theatrical palaces which provided an escape for audiences and, with their opulent interiors and striking period facades, these temples of entertainment are strictly protected and often need to be lit in a period manner or taken back to the originally envisaged lighting – which has frequently been replaced by poor-quality mid-20th century refurbishments.’

In these projects, lighting designers and architects usually stay true to the original architects’ choice of materials and what Meyrick calls the ‘lit impression’, reinstating glamour, glitz and colour, using modern technology and expertise.

‘This is particularly true of auditoria, where the “oh and ah” of the first impression involves artificial lighting interacting with plush interior colours, gilding and architectural detail,’ says Meyrick. ‘Modern technology has come to the rescue of many “hard-to-get-to” built-in lighting features, with innovations such as fibreoptics and, more recently, the emergence of small LEDs with long lamp life and low power consumption.’

Foyers have also benefited from the leap in lighting technology over the past 15-20 years. However, they are under pressure from requirements to accommodate point-of-sale merchandise stands and upgraded bar areas. subtlety and less bling than is customary in other contexts.

‘In terms of new technologies, the real winner has been external facades,’ says Meyrick. The large, difficult-to-maintain and energy-hungry luminaires of the past have been replaced by new lighting sources, while sophisticated lighting controls achieve spectacular night-time effects. Ernest Schaufelberg’s Fortune Theatre in London’s West End, restored

by Foster Wilson Architects with John Muir and Hoare Lea Lighting is a good example. High-quality CGIs that accurately simulate the lighting of these facades are instrumental in gaining planning consent.

Meyrick argues that, although contemporary theatres like the Park Theatre (see page 28) are idiomatically different, their external lighting is governed by aims similar to those of their historic counterparts – to enhance their theatricality, add drama and colour, pick out architectural features and draw in people.

However, contemporary theatres’ interior lighting design is different. Auditoria are generally less opulent. Nevertheless, these are creative spaces and lighting gives them distinctive personalities. These ‘everyman’ auditoria have great sight lines from all locations and lighting that illuminate the space rather than transporting visitors to another world, which is now the exclusive remit of the stage itself.’

The old taboo of allowing daylight into the auditorium has been challenged, for example at the Park Theatre, where the rooflights provide a different working space during the day, improve environmental performance and bring actors and stagehands into contact with daylight.

Because modern theatres are often located within multipurpose buildings housing cafés, libraries and sports facilities, foyers can have a variety of functions and their lighting includes many product types, such as track, spot and pendant fittings so they can be adapted to multiple community uses.

‘In theatre design, LEDs really come into their own,’ says Meyrick. Colour-changing LEDs, supplied by NJO Technology for example, make it easier to change the way spaces feel, enhancing performance facilities, potentially adding an extra dimension to an immersive experience, while offering long lamp life and being low maintenance.

Innovations in LED emergency output and compact drivers and batteries have also had an impact. Available now is small, low-cost, non-maintained emergency lighting that gives full output immediately – essential in entertainment venues, where people may not know the layout.

‘We specified Mackwell’s LED emergency luminaire for the Park Theatre,’ says Meyrick. ‘This meant we didn’t have to go down the traditional route of central battery/tungsten pygmy downlights, which was the norm in many theatres over the past 25 years.’

Lighting technology applications Five years is a long time in office interiors.

Lighting designer GIA Equation’s proposals for the fast-track refurbishment of Bennetts Associates’ 5 New Street Square office development in the City of London, itself completed in 2008, involved upgrading the lighting and replacing the ceiling for a more contemporary feel.

The original lighting proposal included 1 x 21W DALI 900mm louvred airhandling luminaires in continuous lines, providing an average illuminance of 400 lux. After luminaires were mocked up at GIA Equation’s offices, a 1350 x 300mm WILA 2 x 28W replacement tile was set up with Avic air-handling luminaires on a 3.9m chequer-board layout.

Conical deglaring microprism optics were used. As WILA explains, these reduce direct and reflected lamp glare by 40 per cent compared with louvred luminaires.

The average illuminance is now 500 lux and the installed electrical load is 1.67W/m2/100 lux. These figures include >>

Manufacturers’ catalogues needn’t always be the starting point for lighting design. BDP worked with bespoke lighting manufacturer Architectural Lighting Works to revitalise the atrium of Liverpool’s 1986 Exchange Station office development.

Clusters of four uplighters in cradles, conceived by BDP project designer Jasper Sanders as modern interpretations of chandeliers, provide high-level ambient lighting, supplemented at lower levels with task and spot lighting. The cradles are suspended above the concourse from existing trusses. Each comprises a pair of circular Siteco mirror reflectors mounted above four narrow distribution compact projector lamps. general emission. It is designed to produce a concentrated 25-degree light cone as well as general low-glare illumination with 50-degree cones using highly efficient lenses. The unit’s dimensions are minimal and its limited cone concentrates light on horizontal surfaces. It is also adept for accent lighting, picking out objects in windows and on shelves that are silhouetted against darker walls. IGuzzini’s iN30 system now incorporates LEDs, also offering reduced dimensions, careful control of light distribution and easy installation in continuous lines. It is particularly suited to workspaces with monitors where glare can be a problem.

Collingwood Lighting’s dimmable fire rated Halers H5 500 Trimless LED downlight is designed for seamless integration into plaster-finished ceilings.

The LED module is fitted after the housing has been plastered into the ceiling, achieving a minimalist aesthetic by eliminating the need for a bezel. This is the latest addition to the Halers LED range, and is available in neutral white and warm white. The H5 500 Trimless is Part L compliant and, according to Collingwood, produces 80 per cent more light than standard halogen fittings and 40 per cent more than standard GU10 LEDs operating at 8.5W. With a 38-degree beam angle and an IP65 rating, it is suitable for use in bathrooms as well as other types of space.

For external applications, the upgraded RAMA LED, designed by Gonzalo Milá and available from Santa & Cole, now incorporates LED technology. The fitting’s body is extruded recycled aluminium with anodised finish. Columns are grey-painted hot-galvanized steel or anodised aluminium and can support several fittings.

IGuzzini’s UFO is an urban streetlight designed to resemble a luminous leaf, with soft glare-free light distribution and reduced light pollution. The square geometry of the panels, available in large or small sizes, provides flexibility by allowing them to be

combined with different arm configurations, on one or both sides of the pole. LED sources along the profile of the lamp body provide soft, homogenous lighting for the urban version. The street lighting version, with intelligent electronic programming, features three types of high-performance symmetric and asymmetric optics.

Also by IGuzzini, the Lun Up is a direct light luminaire that can be recessed into the ground, floor or wall for use with monochromatic LED power and signalling RGB light sources. Because of its small size, it almost disappears into the landscape by day. Its quadrant shape can be used to form semicircles, full circles, three-quarter circles and sinuous free shapes. Naturally, it is a good choice for lighting circular surfaces.

ark Theatre wanted an outstanding, welcoming and friendly venue, within an old office building, providing: two playhouses (a 200-seat main house and a flexible 80-100 seat studio space); a café/bar, a multi-function rehearsal space, dressing rooms and all the back-of-house facilities needed for the theatre to run successfully.

The existing building was extended and converted, with original materials exposed and kept where possible to show the historic fabric. The entire building was privately financed through developing and selling three upper floor flats, donations, fund raising and philanthropic grants. This required discipline in the design and specification and we worked tirelessly with the client team to ensure every penny counted.

We wanted as much natural light as possible on the long thin site. Rooflights and glazing are used throughout for front of house areas, main circulation spaces, offices, dressing rooms and the large ‘shop front’ bay window. Both auditoria feature large rooflights, which are blacked out for performances. ith the limited construction budget, the materials choices for Park Theatre had to be simple and cost effective. We had developed a ‘found space’ refurbishment aesthetic, keeping and exposing natural materials wherever possible. To complement this, we used materials such as ply and exposed brick where we could, and industrial exposed fittings such as galvanised conduit.

Daylight and light fittings were essential to reinforce the theatre’s friendly atmosphere so luminaires were chosen for simplicity, quality of light and cost-effectiveness.

ctHb LaW Office interiOr, istanbuL saLOn arcHitects t his is a refurbished space in an office building, structured within a repetitive standard construction grid. The interior challenges this rigid grid to create tension between the rectilinear and non-rectilinear.

The corridor is a transitional zone between lawyers and the clients, a longitudinal space dividing service areas from offices. The colours and materials distinguish the surfaces by their use. As the dark grey zone identifies the service functions, the wooden surfaces cover storage spaces.

The slim, linear ceiling lighting guides visitors between the spaces, which are organised hierarchically according to use.

Lighting fixtures align with the tectonic of the design language. Depending on the viewers’ perception, the folded metal plate is a horizontal line or a non-orthographic object, like the mathematical concepts of referential relationships and covariance.

All the forms are meaningful in dynamic perspective, not just from certain angles.

This is hard to represent in two dimensional media – it needs to be experienced spatially.

Inside a conventional orthogonal office structure, the space represents the inherent qualities of law institutions through its non-linear yet unbiased and strong tectonics. The tensions between the orthodox rectangular volumes and oblique surfaces, along with the contrast between cold and warm materials, also embodies the occupant’s intrinsic professional values.

sing Classical proportions and architectural elements, on a conceptual level this house is a celebration of dust. The proportions of the living room are governed by the golden ratio. A light grey base supports a ceiling of rustic plaster, the colour of bare earth. My inspirations were primordial caverns, Renaissance grottos, the nymphaea of Rome’s Villa Doria Pamphilj and the faintly Liberty facades in the streets off the Via Veneto.

The spaces of the House of Dust form a balanced sequence of compressions and dilations. On the walls, passages and windows appear, now dug out of the base, now like the textured surfaces of baguettes. A series of arches, abstracted memories of Trecento Italian painting, disguise doors and cupboards. Among these, one studded with a pink glass doorknob introduces intimate rooms, which are distinguished by the palest pink on the walls which evokes dawns and flowers, the colour of beauty, the colour of beauty that dies.

Someone has observed that my spaces impose silence and others that my houses look like bunkers, inside which light separates and dilates architectural components. In a way, light permeates a building just as air does our bodies and I could say that architecture inhales light.

Architecture is the interpretation of light, which it mediates. If music is sound, architecture is light and a building is not the outcome but the instrument that creates it. And if light is the raw material of architecture, reverberation, as in music, measures its distances. Light, when it encounters a solid material changing its nature and form, reverberates on other surfaces in a game of divisions until it decays into darkness. But not all buildings ‘listen’ to the light: only opaque material is pushed into that iridescent web that we call architecture.

As the cost of LED lamps is coming down, their popularity and specification for retrofits is picking up, says Laura Mark

T

his year Marks & Spencer replaced the interior lighting in 170 of its stores with LEDs as part of a move to reduce the energy usage in its shops, offices and warehouses by 35Â per cent per square foot by 2015. It is just one of many retailers that have acknowledged the benefits of using LED lighting systems to reduce energy use.

Compared with compact fluorescent light fittings, LEDs offer significant energy and cost savings.

For most applications, cost has previously been an obstacle for using LEDs, but as these are beginning to drop and the subsequent benefits are becoming more widely acknowledged, the use of LED lamps is gradually increasing.

There are three different types of LED light fittings: those in which the LED is permanently embedded into the housing, those in which the LED is a cassette, and those in which the LED is a lamp or bulb that is intended to be retrofitted into

existing light fittings. It is this last group of lamps or bulbs upon which this product matrix focuses.

One of the most significant benefits of LED lamps is their long lifetimes – typically, they last up to 15 times longer than conventional light sources. These longer lifespans reduce the need for re-lamping, which not only saves costs on maintenance, but also reduces the amount of disruption that is caused when this needs to be done.

LEDs are often criticised for the quality of white light they produce. There is currently no industry standard for the production of white LEDs and it is not really possible to guarantee a uniformity in the whiteness of light output produced by different manufacturers. However, that said, the quality and variety of LED light fittings has increased significantly in recent years and, as demand for lowenergy lighting increases, so will the developments in LED technology.

hen you consider that, on average, the UK population spends 80 per cent of their lives in enclosed spaces, it’s clear that indoor air quality is of vital importance. Research shows it is one of the top three considerations for architects and building occupants during the design and specification stages of a project, particularly for education and healthcare environments.

However, achieving good indoor air quality can prove to be a challenge for specifiers. Increasing regulation, such as the upcoming Building Regulations Part L that will focus on improving thermal efficiency and making buildings more airtight, can make it harder to disperse pollutants from internal spaces effectively.

Some pollutants found in our living and working environments can have a negative impact on the health and wellbeing of building occupants, according to University of Bristol researchers. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), for instance, are chemicals emitted as gases into the atmosphere from sources such as new furnishings and cleaning products; in high doses, they can contribute to health issues.

Formaldehyde, a common VOC, has been linked to an increased risk of headaches, lethargy, reduced concentration, asthma attacks and allergic reactions by the World Health Organization. It is therefore essential for specifiers to consider ways to tackle this

Work wonders: a preview of the BCO’s new guide to lighting and two concepts for workplace illumination

he lighting in the majority of UK offices is neither particularly innovative nor energy efficient. That was the consensus when The AJ and sister title Lighting conducted a straw poll of an audience of architects, lighting consultants, facilities managers and developers at the start of their recent panel discussion: ‘Designing the Workspace of the Future’.

This view was shared by all four of the guest speakers at the event. Over the course of the next hour, they proceeded to challenge the office-lighting paradigm with a series of thought-provoking presentations and a robust discussion with the audience.

The White Collar Factory The event, which was organised with the help of GE Lighting, began with a joint presentation by Stephen Taylor from architectural practice AHMM and Nick MacLiammoir from lighting consultancy Arup. They spoke about their work with developer Derwent on the White Collar Factory office concept.

Stephen Taylor said the concept, which is due to be built at Silicon Roundabout in London’s Shoreditch, was informed by historic buildings and, in particular, warehouses that had been built at the turn of the previous century.

‘What we’ve learned from a lot of these buildings is they have a natural robustness to change, they have a natural volume to them,’ he said. ‘So we decided to take those principles and develop an idea of how we can turn that into a new building.’

Taylor argued that the White Collar Factory was about eradicating suspended ceilings, lifting the space, lifting the volume and creating height – all of which would allow more daylight onto narrower floorplates.

‘For us, it’s about creating a shell that is flexible and robust to change, which means this building can change over time as standards change,’ he said. ‘We talk about

the Part L improvements and the new BCO [British Council for Offices] guides coming through. We have 4m floor-to-floor heights, 3.5m floor to ceilings, and we remove the ceiling to expose the services and plan those services.’

Flexibility, but also a fidelity to the warehouse aesthetic, were therefore key considerations for Nick MacLiammoir’s lighting treatment of the space. ‘[The project] had the normal design drivers for a Category A office development – cost,

efficiency and light quality – but, adding to that, one of our chief concerns is the quality of the space,’ he said.

‘As Steve was saying, we are very much focused on the industrial aesthetic. That influences our choice of luminaires and the look of the space, so it’s not just about functional performance.’

MacLiammoir argued that his lighting scheme attempted to bridge the gap between a Category A and Category B fit-out. ‘We include in the space a variety of

luminaire types. Now, typically in a Category A fit-out, there’s one luminaire type,’ he said. ‘There’s much more flexibility for the tenant coming in – it’s easier to change – and it’s easier for the landlord.

Effectively, the space is easier to sell because of the flexibility. There’s a potential win there just in terms of less change means less waste.

‘The lighting’s built up from layers of light so within the general lighting is an array of linear luminaries, not that different

from a standard office except it’s all suspended, all visible. The circulation routes have pendants, again an industrial feel but with differentiating zones – these can be moved around to suit the needs of a particular tenant.’

He went on to argue that the flexibility and industrial aesthetic would be perfectly suited to the new generation of tabletbased technology workers, who were beginning to populate the Shoreditch area.

where this sort of building is something they can walk into and in which they immediately feel comfortable,’ he said.

Lighting for the task In the next presentation of the evening, Cundall Light4’s Andrew Bissell talked about BS EN 12464 and argued that it provided architects, designers and engineers with an opportunity ‘to create better-quality spaces, but save energy at the same time’.

Bissell explained how the guide wanted to move office lighting away from uniform light levels that are as high as 500 or even 750 lux, and bring a greater emphasis to lighting for the task.

‘The benefit [with uniform office lighting], of course, is you don’t have to engage with the client,’ he said. ‘But actually this is a very inefficient way to design, and also it creates very bland spaces.’

Drawing on the example of his lighting scheme for the office refurbishment of 6 Chapel Place in London, Bissell told the audience to ‘stop thinking about the space as one big working plane and start looking at the individual elements within it’.

‘What they’re saying [in BS EN 12464] is: if you’ve chosen 500 lux for your task area, your immediate surrounding area should be 300 lux – one step lower. So what we’ve got there is a desk that’s lit from 300–500 lux. And also what’s interesting is they’re not asking for 0.8 uniformity, we are saying that the task area is 0.6 and the immediate area outside that is 0.4. And the reason for that is because we understand the eye can cope with that, the eye can deal with that level of variation.’

BCO guide preview The presentations concluded with a preview of the BCO’s new lighting guide by its author Iain Trent, senior project engineer with UK’s biggest commercial developer Land Securities. Trent admitted that the guide, which was due to be published at the end of September, had been difficult to

Spread the word produce because of a lack of alignment between the different standards and a lack of research about office lighting. He said the guide was timely given the ever-more onerous energy requirements, recently published standards such as BS EN 12464 and changes in technology.

‘I think we are going to see LEDs hitting the office-lighting market in the next 12 months if they haven’t already,’ he said.

Trent explained the three sections to the guide. ‘The first section focuses on daylight and energy. The key messages here are that developers need to employ daylighting specialists at the very early stages of the project, within the planning team,’ he said.

The second section of the guide, he added, would focus on criteria for comfort and performance: ‘Now I’ll get on my soapbox – and this has to be said probably more for the electrical engineers than the lighting designers – 500 lux on a working plane across the open-plan office is not >>

required by BS EN 12464, it is not required

by SLL [the Society of Light and Lighting] and it is not required by the BCO. Spread the word.

‘There are a number of criteria that were introduced relating to providing good, comfortable, general office lighting. These are cylindrical illuminance, modelling ratios and target illumination levels for walls and ceilings,’ he said. ‘Equally, you can’t ignore the task. The task is still an important part of lighting design. The standards and the BCO guide carry on with this concept of task lighting, immediate surround and background lighting. So we support this alternative approach.’

Trent added that speculative office developments made more-nuanced lighting schemes more difficult to achieve but said: ‘You can, however, provide good-quality general background lighting that provides the blank canvas for the fit-out lighting. The Category B lighting will then meet those standards – that’s

what we’re looking to try to achieve with the Category A lighting.’

He said the guide’s third part would offer further practical advice for lighting Category A and Category B fit-outs, as well as the third recognised stage of BCO development: the shell and core.

To conclude, Trent made a rallying call to the assembled audience: ‘The challenge for the lighting world is to take the messages you’ve heard from the people who have just spoken and that are in the guide, to take the latest standards and to educate developers, educate agents and educate the engineers.

‘The guide has the backing of the BCO so it’s a fairly powerful tool to allow you to do that, but these are the key messages: use daylight effectively; use artificial lighting only where and when it is needed, through careful design and automatic controls; light the workspace predominantly for people to communicate with each other; and, finally, light the task as and where required.’

his is the first year of the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC) awards to promote and recognise excellence among UK acoustic consultants.

The awards judges were looking for examples of work that displays innovation as well as originality in acoustic design or approach to a project. Work must have been undertaken in the last two years and the consultancy must be operating in the UK, although the project may be elsewhere.

For this inaugural year, the award categories were: • architectural acoustics – most innovative integration of an architectural acoustics solution (sponsored by Ecophon) • environmental acoustics – best application of environmental noise measurement data (sponsored by Bruel & Kjaer) • sound insulation design – most innovative sound insulation improvement solution( sponsored by Robust Details Ltd).

Sixteen entries were reduced to a shortlist of nine across the three categories. All those entrants were requested to make a brief presentation on their project to the ANC conference held immediately before the awards ceremony. An award (sponsored

by IAC) was made for the best presentation by one of the shortlisted projects, which was determined by delegates attending the conference.

The judging panels were made up of representatives from other professions, academics, consultants and other interest groups.

ANC chairman Phil Dunbavin said “these awards demonstrate the range and quality of the work undertaken by acoustic consultancies. I am particularly impressed by the innovation shown and care given to ensuring the client and all those affected by the projects were involved in the process.”

This project is a rare combination of acoustic research and development in a type of building that is little understood. The seamless incorporation of the acoustic work into Hopkins Architects’ elegant design is a consideration, as is its cost-effectiveness.

There is no acoustic criterion for openplan libraries, so the design process involved complex 3D computer modelling of the whole building as a single, open-plan space.

‘Silent’, ‘quiet’ and ‘social’ areas were identified and acoustic separation ensured.

Several acoustic criteria were considered.

Bespoke acoustically absorbent timber finishes were used for the stairs and light wells, and a largely modular solution for the open-plan areas. Noise was transmitted along book stacks, so bespoke bookshelves with acoustic absorption were designed.

The judges agreed that for technical innovation this entry deserves the award.

The treatment of the stairs and the bookcases was inspired. Integration at all stages was very good.

COMMENDED ARCHITECTURAL ACOUSTICS MANCHESTER TOWN HALL

In a series of entries dominated by education buildings, the judges were pleased to find this project which involved the restoration of a unique, listed building which is also the UK’s third-busiest library.

It was well planned and displayed good integration. They particularly liked the use of loudspeakers activated by visitors in the music library.

This project showed the benefits to clients of appointing an acoustic consultant in a technical advisory role. The consultant persuaded the client to change what they wanted to obtain a better result and the judges applauded this proactive approach.

Large atria and multipurpose learning areas were made to work acoustically with input from consultants at the appropriate stage.

Crossrail had stringent criteria for noise re-radiated from tunnel construction. The challenge was to implement vibration modelling for trains in the tunnel so that noise levels above ground were acceptable.

The project represents the first rigorous method of determining noise and vibration emanating from trains in a Crossrail tunnel at properties above it, with detailed validation to meet an ISO standard.

Modelling and measurements were used to predict groundborne noise. This data was used to validate the noise and vibration model, and to determine noise and vibration at recording studios and other sensitive properties above ground. The model was refined by measuring very low levels of vibration from the tunnel railway.

The judges felt the care taken to ensure residents and businesses were not affected was significant. It was a difficult project as tunnel noise had to be isolated from the underground trains running nearby.

HIGHLY COMMENDED ENVIRONMENTAL ACOUSTICS EUROPEAN NOISE DIRECTIVE ACTION PLAN

This project shows a British acoustics consultancy can compete internationally to win, design and project manage a largescale environmental noise control project. It exhibits technical ability, practical and political skills and working with ventilation and thermal disciplines. It has the widest application, being the first major END action plan to be implemented, improving acoustic comfort to some 2,400 people.

The judges were impressed by the levels of engagement and the methodology, which involved over 990 building assessments.

There was impressive project management and a multidisciplinary solution.

High levels of acoustic privacy were needed in an old timber-frame building. There was an onerous client brief, tight budgets and works had to be completed over the summer holiday. The client brief – ‘raised voices to be unintelligible in adjacent spaces’ – was subjective.

The first challenge was to understand the acoustic implications of the building’s use as a wellbeing centre. The next was to draw up an acoustics design specification. On-site measurements showed extensive work and a background noise masking system would be needed; there were concerns about the latter.

A bespoke design for the noise-masking system was developed. There was no ceiling void, so the loudspeaker driver unit was fixed to a partition void lining; this acted as a resonance board to keep sound even.

The judges were impressed by the attention given to the client’s needs. A standard approach combined with noise generation was innovative in an unusual way.

COMMENDED SOUND INSULATION DESIGN PARK HOUSE, LONDON

This is one of the most complicated vibration isolation buildings ever constructed. The acoustic performance of the fully glazed curtain wall system is exceptional, providing suitable internal conditions even though the north façade of the building overlooks Oxford Street.

The judges felt this was innovative due to the nature of the buildings and that a clever approach had been adopted.

The entry was a fascinating piece of work that demonstrated that the required sound insulation standards can be achieved despite continuous curtain walling being in place.

aha Hadid Architects’ Heydar Aliyev Centre accommodates a range of facilities, including an auditorium, a multi-purpose hall and a museum.

These are connected by lofty, large-span foyers which, along with the building shell, are continuous with external spaces and surfaces. The configuration and detailed design of luminaires and lamps, developed with Maurice Brill Lighting Design, are completely integrated with the architecture and reinforce its powerful double curved geometry.

The lighting trough shown here forms a continuous channel at the foot of the

meandering foyer walls. Continuous luminaires on the trough’s splayed face throw light onto the foyer’s skimmed and painted walls, which comprise double layers of 6mm Lindner-Flex Board.

Light is directed by luminaire covers with acrylic top layers and linear spread lenses. The T5 high-efficiency fluorescents overlap in double runs to avoid shadow gaps between lamps. This is complemented by additional ambient lighting integrated into helical stair hand railing, plus balustrade uplights adjacent to steps and recessed light features in ceilings.
