It’s a scientific fact: relationships improve health

By Monica Cissell As Spring arrives many of us are thinking about getting healthy through eating better and physical activity. Another key element to good health is socialization.

Well-connected older adults are less likely to die prematurely and more likely to have better immune systems, healthier eating habits and better coping mechanisms.

Many studies support this theory, but married couples are the most studied relationships.

According to National Institute of Health, marital relationships strongly impact many health outcomes including cardiovascular disease, chronic conditions, mobility and depression. These relationships can also influence health behaviors such as healthy eating, physical activity and disease management.

When individuals are in a relationship, they feel a sense of responsibility to the other person and tend to make choices that

protect their own health or the health of those they care about. Although relationships can be stressful at times, studies show that social supports may often reduce stress, heart rate, blood pressure and benefit overall health.

Friends provide support, advice, and reassurance that improves an individual’s ability to cope and mitigate stress. One study of heart attack patients found that the rate of reoccurring heart attacks for the patients studied nearly doubled in a six-month period for those patients living alone.

People who are isolated are twice as likely to die early.

According to the National Council on Aging, isolation is equivalent to drinking six or more alcoholic beverages a day or smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Today there are a variety of ways to stay socially engaged. There are various volunteer opportunities available through the RSVP

Volunteer Program including assisting non-profit organizations, mentoring, assisting people during disaster, Medicare counseling and working with Veterans.

Local senior centers, recreation centers, senior dining centers and exercise facilities offer a great place to make new friends and socialize.

When it comes to exercise, it’s never too late

It seems like we are all bombarded with advertisements to join fitness centers. Here are some common questions and answers involving exercise: 1.How much exercise is safe for aging seniors?

For moderate cardiovascular exercise (where you might notice taking a few breaks during sentences if you were having a brisk walk with a friend), up to 60 minutes a day, 5 days a week is fine. That might be a goal to work toward for some. For more vigorous exercise (intense enough that you wouldn’t feel like talking), 20 minutes per day, 5 days a week is plenty.

For moderate weight training, choose a weight you can lift 10-12 times without fatigue and perform 2-3 sets, 2 days a week. For vigorous weight training, choose a weight you can lift 6-7 times and and follow the same schedule. Work all major muscle groups.

2. I haven’t been active for a while.

Can I start exercising again?

Yes, you can. Start slow and build yourself up safely. Maybe you have been on vacation and want to start back up. Begin your workouts a little easier than you did when you left and build yourself back to the point you were at prior to vacation -- and then continue to improve.

3. Do I need a doctor’s clearance to exercise?

If you have been diagnosed with a heart, lung, metabolic condition (i.e. diabetes) or neuromuscular condition (i.e. Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis) you should talk to your doctor prior to

exercise. If you have been sedentary for a long time and have not been getting regular physical exams, it certainly couldn’t hurt to ask your doctor. Many fitness facilities will have a form to fill out for health history and decide if they feel you should talk to a doctor first.

4. Is it possible to get stronger even though I haven’t exercised in a long time?

Absolutely. It is never too late to work on gaining strength. There are plenty of seniors who begin an exercise program and build back strength they haven’t had for years. Never say it is too late to begin exercising. Even if you have not been active for years, you can see improvements in your physical abilities if you exercise safely.

5. Is it OK to take a break during exercise?

Wichita State University WSU has established the Center for Physical Activity and Aging exclusively seniors. Located at the Heskett Center, it offers personal fitness and water exercise classes. Drop by the center for more information.
