Viewpoint How to Plan in Uncertain Times?

Administrators like for things to be organized and planned out to every last detail when hosting an event. When I was a superintendent, I always wanted events to look organized and professional. It would upset me if I pulled into parking lot to attend an open house, parent teacher conference, ballgame, etc., and see the grass hadn’t been mowed, trash around campus, sound systems hadn’t been tested, not enough people to work various stations, etc. Even as the Executive Director, I want things to be smooth and the services to our members to be friendly. I want our members to come to a conference and know that it will be professional, and the material will be of high quality and valuable. I really think that is normal for any school administrator.

Now we have COVID-19 and our world has been turned upside down! For people who a re o rg a n i z e d a n d d e t a i l oriented as school

administrators, this has been an earth-shattering time.

We cannot plan to open school as we have for decades because we do not know what rules we will be under on August 13.

How can we prepare? How can we plan? How can we assure we will be in school and be able to run our school buses? How are we going to feed all of our kids? How can we assure kids will be taught even if they are not on campus? The questions go on and on….the answers remain silent.

These are difficult times for school leaders, but your parents, employees and kids expect you to lead. They are also concerned about what August may bring, but of course they are not the ones responsible. The responsibility for operating schools in a safe and effective manner ultimately falls on the school leader. Am I making you feel any better?

So, what are school leaders supposed to do during these times? You got it….lead. You have to stay current with the guidance being issued by the Governor and Arkansas Department of Health. You have to network with other school leaders to see what they are doing, planning and discussing. These conversations with other school leaders are invaluable to assist you with your own planning. You will have to plan for multiple scenarios to start the year so you can implement a plan at whatever phase we are in come August. You have to be ready to change those plans during the year if we have another outbreak. We have to be nimbler than we’ve ever had to be in education. And the bottom line is that you have changed more in the last two months than we have changed in the past 20 years.

Think of everything you have done over the past two months. Everything that went great as well as areas where we would do things differently. Think of the hours of setting up curriculum plans, lessons and guidance, food services changes, policy changes, Zoom meetings, etc.

Your world has changed, and you have handled it

remarkably well. You may not feel like you are leading, but you are, and you are doing a great job.

So, where do we go from here?

Your parents, kids, employees, and community are looking for you to guide them in a changing world. Education has to look different than it has in the past. Parents and kids will want more choices for their education, and we have to find a way to provide that choice. Some of our employees will want to p ro v i d e i n s t r u c t i o n i n a different manner.

We can make those opportunities available or we can try to replace them.

We have to think outside the box like never before. We cannot wait around until someone tells us what we need to do….that isn’t leading.

We need to move forward with what we think is best for our kids and staff….if we need to ask for forgiveness later, then we can.

However, you are doing a great job so keep up the good work and let’s get ready to have the best year ever!

I prepared for the school year being more grateful for things like family and friends and all those who support educators and what we do.

I was grateful for improvements in student achievement from the previous year and for those that worked so hard to make it happen.

During the fall semester, I remember specifically being thankful for all the opportunities I was given to support kids and their activities, otherwise known as supervision or duty. I am also extremely grateful for all those who spend nights away from families to do the same.

r. Jared Cleveland was destined to work in service to people. Just exactly how wasn’t clear at first.

“Consider failure as the next step to success and never lose focus on what is best for the children.”

“My father was an attorney, and I thought I wanted to practice law just like him,” Jared said. “He always served those around him and took great to care and council everyone that needed him even if they had no way to pay for his service.”

After a conversation with his dad at the end of a tour of a law school, Jared decided that a legal career wasn’t for him. He found another influence in his mom, Leona.

“My mother, Leona Cleveland, is a career educator and administrator,” said Jared. “I watched her serve daily and realized she was always happiest when she was s e r v i n g c h i l d re n , e s p e c i a l l y t h o s e t h a t w e re disadvantaged.”

Dr. Jared A. Cleveland, Deputy Superintendent, Springdale School District, says to be successful as an educational administrator you must be a constant learner and keep joy in your heart.

In 1995, Jared landed his first job in education in the Magazine School District as a social studies teacher and basketball coach. Eight years later, he assumed a principalship then the superintendency in the district before moving on to the Lavaca School District two years later. He served as the superintendent at Lavaca for seven years before being hired by the Arkansas Department of Education in 2012 where he worked as the Assistant Commissioner of Fiscal and Administrative Services. The following year, he joined the Springdale School District as Deputy Superintendent.

“I love being a part of a team of like-minded, caring adults striving to shape and mold future generations,” he states. “Being the person that helps filter applications, interview, and offer opportunities to join our team is tremendously rewarding.”

What challenges Jared the most is the concern he has for his students. “The most difficult and emotional challenge for me is responding appropriately to and working with child protective services, law enforcement, our staff, and impacted families when a child's health, safety, and well being have been compromised due to some sort of abuse,” Jared admits. “Those situations are heart wrenching for all involved.”

In fact, Jared hopes to leave his profession with a legacy of caring. “I would like to be remembered as man of great faith with a servant's heart,” he said. “I strive to model how to teach minds to think, hearts to care, and hands to serve.”

How would your coworkers describe you?

“Many people in our office call me the ‘People Whisperer.’ I believe it is because I want to authentically connect with everyone that needs support from the central office or me personally.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Mr. Tony Wood gave me the simplest professional advice when I served in the ADE. He said on multiple occasions to live by a ‘Do-Right’ rule and do not compromise, because if you do, the slope is slippery, and the fall is hard. I share that advice with others around me often.”

What major changes have you seen in education during your career?

“The technology age has blossomed from 1995 to today. Email was considered a fad, and the internet was not available throughout the state. Today, we have more technological capability in our hands with cellular phones than what NASA used to get astronauts to the moon and back. All kinds of information, positive and negative, is at our fingertips every second of the day and night. Decoding and filtering what is real and not real is now the challenge. Humans are more connected than ever through various social media platforms, yet more disconnected from the human experience of treating others with kindness and respect.”

What might other administrators be surprised to know about you?

“I truly love to work outside doing physical construction projects and running heavy equipment on our small farm. I find it relaxing to cut firewood, mow hay, and feed our cows.”

What’s something that amazes you?

“I am amazed that I have been married for 27 years to date and have three outstanding sons with only one left in our home. Truly, I am amazed at how quickly my life is passing by, but I am thankful.”

What do you enjoy doing during your time off?

“I enjoy spending quality time with my family which includes outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, and water sports.”

If you weren't in your current position, what would you being doing?

“With my professional life dedicated to public education, I expect I would be serving in another capacity to improve the student and faculty experience within a school district, or I would likely serve in public office at the state level.”

What are the goals you are still working toward?

I greatly desire to be a superintendent again sometime in the future. Until an opportunity and fit arises for me, I will remain focused on the academic, fiscal, human resource, and facility needs in the Springdale School District.

During the spring and early summer "hiring season" for school districts we get questions from superintendents or principals such as, "I want to recommend my spouse's 2nd cousin for a position in our district. Is this allowable under the ethics laws?' The answer to this specific question is "yes, this hire would be allowed under the ethics laws/rules."

Ethics laws regarding hiring family members typically apply to school board members.

Lakeside Principal Darin Landry Receives 2020 AASSP Award Praised for leading several innovations in his profession, Darin Landry, principal at Lakeside High School in Hot Springs, has r e c e i v e d t h e 2 0 2 0 P r i n c i p a l o f t h e Ye a r Award from the Arkansas Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP).

Shawn Cook, superintendent for the Lakeside School District in Hot Springs, commends Landry on his efforts to be approachable. "Landry builds relationships with all the students," Cook said. "I am in the high school daily, and I observe him talking with the students and calling them by name," said Cook. "He works very hard to keep students in school."

During his tenure as educational administrator, Landry has also implemented several projects such as the Lakeside Legacy Program, which allows students to obtain an Associate Degree from National Park College while still in high school.

The secondary principal selected as AASSP Principal of the Year will have the opportunity to represent Arkansas at the National Association of Secondary School Principals Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, July 7-9, 2020.

At the conference, state principals of the year will engage with school leaders from across the country, gain recognition before a national audience, and benefit from complete access to NASSP's premier professional development offerings.

To retain students, Landry found that resources, not traditional punishment, were the most effective way to graduation. "While serving as the high school assistant principal, I recognized the impact expulsion was making

Bentonville Principal Eric Hipp Receives 2020 AAMLA Award Cited for his commitment to his students' long term success, Eric Hipp, principal at Ruth Hale Barker Middle School in Bentonville, received the Arkansas Association of Middle Level Administrators (AAMLA) 2020 Administrator of the Year.

"We leave no gray areas when it comes to defining what it takes to love a child well," said Hipp.

Along with the state recognition, this award also designates Hipp as a Distinguished Principal in the National Association of Elementary School Principal’s (NAESP) National Distinguished Principal ® (NDP) program, which honors outstanding elementary and middle-level principals.

“Eric not only inspires his teachers to provide high quality academic instruction, he is responsible for leading a culture that promotes development of the whole child to include civic engagement, social and emotional health, and career development,” said Debbie Jones, superintendent, Bentonville School District.

Hipp believes that the middle school years are a critical time for students.

"During a child's middle school years, I firmly believe they either knowingly or subconsciously decide how successful or unsuccessful they will be as a student moving forward," he said. "If we don't personally know our students and have a plan in place to meet them where they're at as a human and as a learner with acceptance and understanding, we can only win a short-term battle."

Springdale Principal Justin C. Swope Receives 2020 AAESP Award Praised for his innovation in improving school performance and making school culture a priority, Justin C. Swope, principal, Lee Elementary in the Springdale School District, has been selected as the Arkansas Association of Elementary School Principals (AAESP) 2020 Elementary School Principal of the Year.

"We start with the beliefs that 'all students can learn' and 'building relationships.' This drives our vision of all learners growing and our mission of personalized teaching and learning," said Swope.

The AAESP annually recognizes an Arkansas elementary principal for their professional and community efforts.

This award also designates Swope as a Distinguished Principal in the National Association of Elementary School Principal’s (NAESP) National Distinguished Principal ® (NDP) program, which honors outstanding elementary and middle-level principals who ensure that America's children acquire a sound foundation for lifelong learning and achievement.

During Swope's tenure as principal at Lee Elementary, the school has been designated in the top 10% of schools in Arkansas for academic growth, named as a "Beating the Odds" school by the University of Arkansas' Office for Educational Policy, and counted in the top five schools in the Northwest Arkansas region for literacy content growth.

Swope said that one component of his success includes sharing decision making in his school. "My leadership team consists of representatives from every major certified team in our building in addition to classified representation," he said.

"As a school principal, Justin has transformed his school into an innovative professional learning community," said Maribel Childress, assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction, and PK-5 in the Springdale School District.

"His school exhibits a collaborative culture, not just among the educators, but also with parents and the community."

In a collaborative effort to make sure all of our membership stays informed during this challenging time, the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators (AAEA) and the Arkansas School Boards Association (ASBA), has scheduled a virtual Joint Leadership Conference.

We believe this will provide a valuable professional development opportunity for school board members, superintendents, and others to share up-todate information and ideas from other practitioners. We encourage administrators and board members to virtually attend this event at your home or office. In those situations where attendees need access to technical equipment at school locations we encourage following proper social distance protocols.

WHEN: The Virtual Joint Leadership Conference will be held Wednesday, June 24th. It will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude by 11:45.

TRAINING HOURS: Conference attendees will earn three hours of training credit .

REGISTRATION: Registration is $150 per person, for AAEA or ASBA members.

The Arkansas Association of School Business Officials (AASBO) has scheduled nine sessions of certification classes for July 7-9 at the Arkansas PBS Studio on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Plan on attending the classes and learn valuable information and updates in public school finance as well as meeting and networking with other school business officials from throughout the state.

The six classes scheduled on July 7-8 will provide twelve (12) hours of credit towards the Initial Tier 1 12-hour training as required by Act 730 for new business managers. If you are a new business manager or if your district has a new business manager, then this is required training for this position. REGISTRATION WILL BE OPEN SOON! AASBO is also offering three elective courses on July 9 to accommodate those who were not able to complete initial CASBO certification or CASBO certification renewal due to the postponement of the April CASBO classes caused by the COVID19 pandemic. * There will be a limited number of on-site seats to adhere to the best practices of social distancing at the time of the event.

If you are unable to attend on-site in Conway, the CASBO classes will be “live streamed” as an alternative option. To “live stream” the CASBO classes you must create an account through the NEW Arkansas PBS Learn LMS. Important note: This is a new LMS - all participants will need to create a new account to access CASBO trainings.
