We are nearing that time in the summer where we can begin to smell the school hamburger days. The summer conference is almost here, and we have a packed 2-day schedule. Click here to view the schedule and register for the conference. Our theme this year is Resilient Leadership: Better Than Ever. We will be conducting Beginning Administrator and New Superintendent Mentor training on Monday, July 26, before the general session that begins at 10:00 am. The AAA Governing Body meeting will be on Tuesday, July 27, at 4:00 pm. Be sure to look at the agenda on the Sched App so you can plan to participate in this informative and packed conference Dr. Mike Hernandez AAEA Executive Director

The AAEA staff has been working diligently to support you this summer.

We have conducted numerous training sessions across Arkansas, including legislative updates and Tier I. We enjoy getting to be with you at these training sessions because we hear about crucial issues and needs directly. For example, equalization funding has been a hot topic at these sessions as districts grapple with what to do with these funds. It is vital that there is communication with your staff to make sure that they understand how this money will be utilized, focusing on raising the average teacher salary in Arkansas as a whole. ARP ESSER is another topic that we get a great number of questions about. We have tried to relay questions to the ADE to ensure that correct information is shared. There have been many Zoom meetings for administrators to keep members up to date as things change at the federal level Health insurance has been another hot topic recently with the forecasted de cits in the state and public school employee programs. The legislature has provided an additional $35 million to the public employee fund to help reduce the de cit. Due to the Act 1004 of 2021, the duties of the State and Public-School Life and Health Insurance Board have been transferred to the State Board of Finance to further develop health and life insurance bene ts for State and Public School employees and retirees. The State Board of Finance has been reviewing recommendations and are determining rates, bene t changes and whether to seek additional funding for the program. The state is moving toward a record surplus and I think we would all appreciate the consideration of using these funds to support the school insurance program. Please make sure you stay engaged during the next few months as decisions are made that will affect school personnel.

Please remember to let us know if you have a beginning administrator (BAs) in your district. BAs include assistant principals, principals, curriculum administrators, and special education supervisors. Click here to view the commissioner's memo. Once you register your new administrator, she/he will need to register to attend the summer conference and a TESS Credentialing session. Ms. Lenett Thrasher is the program lead and will email all registered new administrators additional information on the training. The new administrators should plan to attend training Monday, July 26, 8:00 am, and participate in the rest of the conference. Perspective

New Year, New Focus

Happy New Year!

I love working in a profession where we have an opportunity to start fresh and new every scal year. It is also nice to get to celebrate a “new year” in both January (calendar year) and July (school year).

I am honored to serve in the role of AAEA President this year. As we head into the 2021-2022 school year, I hope each and every one of you takes a little time this summer for self-care – rest, relax, refresh – whether it be at home or away (isn’t it great that we can take vacations this summer?). My focus this year is going to be on traditions, transparency, and communications.

Traditions – we all have them and they provide such wonderful memories. I think about our family holiday traditions and they make me smile. What about our school traditions? This will be the theme of our district administrator’s retreat in July. School traditions provide memorable educational experiences for our students. It is critical that we, as leaders, intentionally plan for these experiences.

Students and families depend on us to prepare students for life, and isn’t life all about experiences? Our district will be honing in on all grade levels, kindergarten through twelfth grade, to ensure students are experiencing the traditions of our district and developing a true sense of Trojan pride.

Transparency and communication go hand in hand. As we plan for the upcoming year, it is critical that we communicate with all key stakeholders in a transparent way. The de nition of transparent is having thoughts, feelings, or motives that are easily perceived. Think about how we are perceived as administrators.

Unfortunately, perceptions are one's reality and perceptions can be good or bad. It is my goal to be clear, consistent, and positive in relaying all important information On behalf of the AAEA Board, I invite all of you to the 2021 AAEA Summer Conference.

This two day conference is a perfect opportunity to network and grow professionally. We look forward to reconnecting!

Award Winners Heather Williams, National Outstanding Assistant Principal Heather Williams, Assistant Principal at Warren Dupree Elementary in Jacksonville North Pulaski School District, was recently named National Outstanding Assistant Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Recipients of this award are practicing assistant principals with at least two years’ experience in the role who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and have set high standards for students, colleagues, parents and the community. “The assistant principal role is crucial to the success of the school community,” says NAESP Executive Director L. Earl Franks, Ed.D., CAE. “They have a direct impact on every aspect of school—collaborating with principals on school leadership, supporting faculty and staff, and creating a school climate that puts student learning, health, and safety first. Their passion for education and leadership shines through in everything they do. Congratulations to the 2021 class of National Outstanding Assistant Principals.” Ms. Williams will be recognized in July at the National Principal Conference of NAESP in Chicago.

5 Things You May Not Know About Disability Insurance

Owning a disability insurance policy may help you feel financially protected if you are unable to work due to a covered illness or injury. Whether you’re debating getting disability insurance or you’ve already signed up but are still a little fuzzy on the details, here are five things you may not know about disability insurance: You may or may not be able to keep your coverage after leaving your employer.

Disability insurance can be purchased as an individual policy directly through an insurance company, or as a group policy through your employer. If you have a group disability insurance policy, you may have a portability option. If your coverage is portable, you may be able to take all or a portion of your disability insurance coverage with you if you leave your employer. If your coverage is not portable, you will lose your policy upon termination of your employment.

You may have the option to choose your elimination period.

Disability insurance policies typically have elimination periods. An elimination period is the time between the date when you were unable to work and the date you will begin to receive benefits. Elimination periods can vary, with time periods anywhere from 0 days to 365 days. Sometimes your employer chooses the elimination period options for your benefits, while in many cases you have the option to choose what is best for your financial situation.

When considering your elimination period, think about how many sick days you have and how long you could go without a paycheck. Use that amount to determine which elimination period to choose. For example, if you know you have a solid bank of vacation time you could use, or you know your spouse’s salary could get you by for about a month, you may want to choose a 30-day elimination period. In many cases, a longer elimination period results in smaller premium payments than a shorter elimination period plan. Your premium may be different, but the benefit amount will be the same.

Your benefit period starts after your elimination period is over.

First, it’s important to understand how a disability claim timeline works. When you experience a covered injury or illness, your physician will determine how long you are unable to work. Let’s say that your physician states you cannot work for 8 weeks total. Your elimination period will start on the date you become disabled. Then, once your elimination period has passed, you will begin your benefit period. In this situation if you had a 14-day elimination period, your benefit period would be 6 weeks.

Your benefit amount may be affected by your benefit period.

When you have a monthly disability benefit, benefits are payable as a monthly rate and any period that is less than a full month will be prorated. Like in the example above, your benefit period may not equal exactly one month. For example, let’s say your benefit period starts on January 15. If your benefit period is 6 weeks long, it will end on February 25. You will receive one benefit payment for January 15-February 14, and another prorated amount for February 15-25. This timeline could vary based on when a claim is processed, as well as how your specific plan is designed.

Disability benefits don’t automatically increase with your salary.

Your disability benefits are based on your salary at the time you first enrolled. They will only increase to match your current salary when you request it – not automatically during enrollment every year. When your compensation changes, discuss this with your account manager at your enrollment to increase your benefit amount.

Brandie Williams, Superintendent of Trumann School District, says “Trumann is my hometown and I absolutely love leading #TeamTrumann each and every day. There is no greater reward than leading the district that helped to shape you.”

Superintendent Brandie Williams describes herself as a “true nerd” when it came to school growing up. She says, “I loved learning, meeting new people, making friends, participating in extracurricular activities, being a part of something bigger, and contributing to the school community – spreading school spirit. That felt ‘natural’ to me.” So, when it was time to start planning her future, there was no doubt about what she would do. “I knew I wanted to be a teacher.”

Brandie attended Arkansas State University and graduated with a bachelors degree in 2000. She began by teaching 4th grade in the Nettleton School District, but went on to work in various parts of the state throughout her career. She taught 3rd and 4th grade at Clarendon School District, 5th grade at Wynne School District, and at the England School District she held roles as a 6th grade teacher, instructional facilitator/federal programs coordinator, and elementary principal. “Each one of these districts holds a special place in my heart,” she says. “I developed friendships that have lasted a lifetime, I worked with passionate educators, and I gained an incredible amount of respect for those serving across the state.”

As she moved through her career, she still hoped to one day lead in her home district – Trumann – where she could be near family. Four years ago, that hope was fulfilled when she was hired as Assistant Superintendent of the Trumann School District. She became the district’s Superintendent last year. She says “I call it the ‘boomerang effect,’ when you land back where you started. My love for education started as a child in the Trumann School District, and I see it as a true blessing to be leading there now.”

Brandie believes that some people are just born to be educators, and describes the work as “not easy. It is not for the faint of heart. It is a commitment, well beyond 3:30pm in the afternoon. If someone is considering education and they feel like nothing else in life will make them happy, I think those are the ones that were born to serve as public educators.” For her part, Brandie can’t imagine doing anything outside of education, and says she would be either teaching in a classroom or leading as principal if she were not in her current role. “Education is my talent and my hobby. It’s where I feel I can contribute to the greater good, working to give students the best chance at becoming their best selves.” Her favorite part about her job is making connections with others and working with them to make the school experience better for kids. The most challenging part of her job is having enough time, saying “The demands, needs, deadlines, commitments, and goals are continually fighting for time. The day in the life of any educator is busy – filled with more than the clock allows. Each step from teacher to superintendent grows in responsibilities and time needed to meet the needs of those you are serving.”

The most significant change she has noticed over the course of her career is the focus on public educators and public schools to take on a growing number of responsibilities each year, stating “Public educators are trained to teach, with a focus on content, teaching strategies, developmental levels of learners, classroom management, etc., but more and more they are being called on to navigate safety/security of schools, mental health, specialized 5

She was passionate about students and providing them the high-quality educational experiences, and she was honest and lived a life of integrity.’”

learning needs, and societal/political demands that are continually in flux. While it is wonderful that public schools are readily accessible to students and families and can aid in addressing many of these impacts, the demands are causing great stress to educators.”

Brandie says others would describe her as someone who is “serious about the work.” She works hard and long hours and expects that out of those around her, with everyone striving towards continuous improvement in order to benefit students and families. She believes in public education and that it should serve all students well, but that it can only happen if everyone does their part.

Others may be surprised to know Brandie is married to a Baptist preacher. They have two girls, Emilie and Chloie, and a sheepadoodle puppy named Barkley. Her biggest hobby is supporting her daughters in their many activities: volleyball, basketball, softball, OM events, and Quiz Bowl Tournaments. What free time remains is spent with family, friends, and their church family. She also loves traveling and seeing various parts of the United States with her family. Her largest Bucket List item is to explore all 50 states before her girls both graduate from high school. “This past Spring Break we went out west and visited six states. We road-tripped 50 hours in 7 days and had a blast doing it!”

What are the goals you are still working toward?

My lifelong professional dream is to attain my doctorate and after retirement from K-12, spend time in higher education helping future administrators prepare for serving in the K-12 setting and/or working in some capacity at the state level aiding schools with specific needs.

Tell us about any awards or recognition you have received.

I have been a National Board Certified Educator since 2005 (recertifying in 2015). I am a Google Certified Level 1 and Level 2 Educator, as well as a Google Certified Trainer. I currently serve on the AAEA Board of Directors and the ArkASPA Board of Directors as ArkASPA Board President.

What have you done that you are most proud of?

During my time as an educator, my most proud moments were spent in a classroom setting with students, either as a teacher engaged in lessons or during observations and visits to classrooms as an administrator. Taking time to talk to students, spending time investing in them in the instructional setting, and engaging with them while they are participating in activities they love is my “happy place.”

What do you see as the biggest benefit of AAEA membership?

From my first day as principal, AAEA has been a source of strength and knowledge for me. I remember being “green” as a beginning administrator and soaking in every word from the leaders across the state that were presenting at various AAEA conferences/events. Over time, I felt more and more a part of the process and saw the impact of participating, growing in knowledge, the importance of taking part in the legislative process, and the responsibility in giving back to the AAEA community of learning. I find the AAEA to be critical to my continual growth, development, and involvement as an administrator in the state of Arkansas.

The question was, "Is a head football coach that also serves as the district athletic director considered an administrator under the ethical guidelines for school administrators?" The answer is "yes" if this person in his/her role as AD has district-wide purchasing authority.

Under the ethic rules, "administrator” means any superintendent, assistant superintendent or his/her equivalent, open-enrollment public charter school director, school district treasurer, business manager, or another individual responsible for entity-wide purchasing. The determining factor for being considered an “administrator” for the purposes of these regulations is the actual or implied authority of an individual to make purchases on behalf of the entire organization. This de nition excludes many building principals (whose purchasing authority is often limited to their own school) but could include athletic directors or others. Classi ed employees serving in food services, business/accounting, or support services may also be considered “administrators” when they exercise autonomous system-wide purchasing authority

Corner The Bene t of Re nding You During the school year it’s easy to get caught in the everyday routine of stress and over-extension that comes with maintaining a personal life and a career that, while rewarding, can be tiring. Summer break is the perfect time to mentally check out from work, letting go of the fast pace to place focus on putting yourself rst. By taking some “you time” each year, you set yourself up to approach the new school year with renewed focus and a grateful mindset.

5 Ways to “Re nd” You this Summer Break:

- Try something new or pick up an old hobby: try yoga, take a painting or pottery class, catch up on your golf game, join a book club, or simply spend more time enjoying your family and friends.

- Get some sleep. Sleeping at least 7 hours per night helps regulate your emotions, boosts your creativity, and supports healthy hormone levels. All great reasons to get more shut eye this summer!

- Get moving! Staying active this summer not only bene ts your mental health but will keep you in shape physically as you move into a more relaxed routine. Swimming, hiking, cycling, even going for a walk outside are all great ways to break a sweat – aim for getting active 3 to 4 times each week.

- Give back. If community service is important to you, summer break is the perfect time to get involved while you have some extra free time. You can support others in many ways, whether by volunteering with a local nonpro t or simply helping your neighbor with yard work.

Finally, as summer begins to wind down and the new school year draws near, take the time to re ect on the past year and set an intention for the next school year. Remind yourself of all the successes and lessons learned over the past year and re ect on ways to put those experiences to use over the next year!

Tools to Help You Hire the Best!

The AAEA Job Board is a calendar-year subscription that assists districts with the ever-increasing challenge of recruiting quality staff. It is a significant resource for educators, both in-state and out-of-state, seeking employment in Arkansas schools.

Over 165 school districts are participating in the program, which has been extremely helpful to schools and educators over the years. The site is used year-round and is accessed extensively during the second semester. It is not unusual to see over 400 jobs posted on the Job Board at one time. With an account, school districts may post unlimited job vacancies throughout the year.

Subscription renewals will be sent to superintendents this fall regarding 2021 renewal.
