32 Richard Ave. on Feb. 1 at approximately 1 a.m., according to a Pennsylvania State Police report.

Once inside, an altercation occurred between the two men and the six individuals inside the house at the time. McDaniel and Nelley began threatening the group with a pellet gun and a knife in an attempt to acquire money and drugs.

While continuing to argue with the victims, local police arrived, causing the two men to flee the premises.

Although handled primarily by the state police, the SU campus police gave assistance as well as the Shippensburg Police Department.

McDaniel and Nelley were charged with several counts, including robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, simple assault, terroristic threats and unlawful restraint.

Both men were taken into custody and held in the Cumberland County Prison in lieu of $139,000 bail.

As January transitions into February, Shippensburg University students and faculty are preparing to pick up their picket signs and join a nationwide protest.

Students and faculty will meet in front of Horton Hall on Feb. 9 at 3:30 p.m. before beginning their trek to the Ceddia Union Building (CUB) amphitheater.

Upon arrival, students and faculty will be invited to speak before the gathered crowd to share their thoughts or words of encouragement.

The march is scheduled to go until 5 p.m.

According to a promotional poster issued by the Women’s Center, the intention of the march is to “support the rights of all marginalized people, march in solidarity, listen to stories shared and unify our campus community.”

Kelsey Roman, interim director of SU’s Women’s Center, developed the idea of hosting a women’s march at SU following the occurrence of similar marches throughout the country in the days following President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

SU’s Women’s March is sponsored by the Women’s Center and is open to all students and faculty, as well as the Shippensburg community.

All students, faculty and members of the Shippensburg community are welcome to attend. Anyone who wishes to speak at the march should send an email to armelendez@ship. edu.

“We had the vigil. We had the march. Now we need an action plan,” Jefferson said to the crowd. “We will always be stronger together.”

University senior begins Scheduling updates internship semester

When the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties rallied at the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg last fall, it did not prevent a strike. What the faculty did do was show their strength in numbers and a determination to strike.

But a group of people yelling and waving signs does more than send a message to others. It strengthens the group from within. The unity that is inherently necessary for a rally or march to succeed is something that feeds off of itself. People can let out their frustrations, but also inspire each other to do more for their cause.

Police Briefs Hit and run accident in the C-7 parking lot

Skyler M. Allen of Greencastle, Pennsylvania, reported damage to her 2016 Honda Civic to university police. The vehicle had been parked in a commuter parking lot.

Allen noticed damage to the right rear quarter panel of the vehicle on Jan. 31. She reported the damage to her vehicle occurred while parked in the C-7 commuter lot.

No damage estimate is available at this time.

Harley Hall residents charged with underage drinking Alexis K. Hammons and Maria I. Briggs, both 19, of Harley Hall were charged with underage drinking in connection with an incident that occurred in the G-1 parking lot.

A university police officer was on patrol in the parking lot on Friday when he observed the two women walking through the parking lot, appearing to be intoxicated. The officer stopped both females and found that both were showing signs of intoxication.

Hammons and Briggs both admitted to consuming alcohol and portable breath tests confirmed the presence of alcohol in their systems.

After being medically evaluated, both individuals were released and citations were later filed charging Hammons and Briggs with underage drinking.

Non-student visitor charged with underage drinking and providing false identification to law enforcement Rachel Nicole Hite, 20, of Montgomery, Pennsylvania, was charged with underage drinking and false identification to law enforcement in connection with an incident that occurred in the G-1 parking lot.

Hite and a male companion were stopped by university police officers on Sunday for being in possession of alcohol on university property.

Hite was found to be intoxicated by officers at the scene, and during the investigation was discovered to have provided the officers with false information regarding her identity and date of birth.

After discovering Hite’s correct information, university police charged her with false identification to law enforcement in addition to underage drinking.

Non-student visitor charged with underage drinking Tyra A. Edwards, 18, of Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, was charged with underage drinking in connection with an incident that occurred in the lobby of Seavers Hall.

University police arrived at the residence hall on Sunday to assist residence hall staff with an intoxicated female who was “violently vomiting.”

Officers at the scene identified the individual as Edwards.

Due to her condition, an ambulance was dispatched to the residence hall to transport Edwards to the Chambersburg Hospital for evaluation and treatment for a possible alcohol overdose.

A citation was filed charging Edwards with underage drinking.

Non-student visitor charged with underage drinking Nathan Lynn Brenize, 20, of Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania, was charged with underage drinking in connection with an incident that occurred outside of Shippen Hall on Sunday.

Brenize was observed by university police to be walking along the sidewalk outside the building when he fell into the nearby bushes.

The officer stopped Brenize and found him to be showing signs of intoxication. The officer gave him a portable breath test which showed positive signs of alcohol consumption.

Brenize was transported to and released at his residence in Bard Meadows. A citation was filed charging him with underage drinking.

SU becomes most magical place on earth Sofia Perzan

Asst. Ship Life Editor Shippensburg University students took a virtual adventure to the most magical place on earth Thursday evening as they participated in Disney Trivia Night.

The Activities Program Board (APB) hosted trivia night in the Ceddia Union Building multipurpose room (MPR). Students flooded the MPR and grouped themselves into teams at the tables that were organized around the room.

Tables were decorated with colorful tablecloths along with colorful balloons.

As students entered the MPR, donations were made to the SU choir and madrigal singers. Raffles were sold to help raise money for the groups’ upcoming Orlando trip.

–Anna Middleton, SU student The 30-plus teams consisted of about eight to 10 people, and their team names were given to them as it corresponded with their remote control. The remote control connected to the trivia questions for the teams to brainstorm together and pick their answer.

There were four rounds of 20 questions challenging students’ knowledge on a variety of Disney topics from movies to shows to Disney World trivia.

A question was given with four potential answers and answers would slowly disappear as the time was running out.

While the clock was ticking, fewer points were awarded the longer it took each group to answer.

After each answer, the scoreboard automatically moved up the team with the most points.

At the end of each round, the top team would qualify for the finals.

Music from Disney movies such as “Frozen” and “Beauty and the Beast” played on the intercom while students belted out the lyrics.

There were also tunes from the older Disney television shows such as “That’s So Raven” and “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.”

“It was unbelievable how many people were passionate about Disney Trivia and how much I even learned myself,” freshman Tiffany Muthler said.

Throughout the rounds, $10 cash giveaways were presented for random winners of activities such as bringing up a shoelace first and finding a piece of gum for the speaker.

There were also $25 gift card giveaways to the raffle ticket winners. Gift cards were for name brand clothing stores as well as Starbucks and Amazon.

Shippensburg Warlocks bring Quidditch to life Yvette Betancourt Ship Life Editor

Many Harry Potter fans grew up fantasizing what life would be like to attend the prestigious Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Or they dreamed of playing the famous sport of quidditch.

At Shippensburg University, the dream to play a quidditch game can become a reality, minus the flying.

Founded in the fall of 2010 by Christopher Kostick, the quidditch club gives students a chance to build friendships, leadership skills and bond over the well-known book series, said club president Ali Laughman.

“I wanted to meet people as a freshman in college. Also, it’s the only fun way I could think of to get some exercise and take a break from school,” said Caitlin Silva, the club’s secretary.

Because of the absence of flying, SU’s quidditch team is more similar to rugby, dodgeball and tag. However, the club strives to stick with the same principles as the sport from Harry Potter to provide a similar atmosphere, Laughman said.

Players are equipped with a PVC pipe covered in electrical tape and bandanas for coordinating player’s positions. Positions are keepers, seekers, chasers and beaters. Players will also have jerseys to signify the team on

which they are playing.

Chasers must make their way from one end of the quidditch pitch to the other with the quaffle (primary ball), avoiding players from the opposing team, known as beaters. Beaters are equipped with dodgeballs to throw at their opposition, aiming to force them to drop the quaffle. Keepers are similar to goalies, in which their main goal is to make sure the opposing team cannot score.

Meanwhile, seekers are in search of the coveted golden snitch, worth 50 points, often a third-party dressed in primarily yellow.

After the snitch is caught, the game ends and the scores are tallied.

The quidditch teams play in tournaments against other participating teams such as, Dickinson College, Juniata College and occasionally Kutztown University. During scrimmages players will unite with teams from other colleges.

“We provide a place for people who may not have the best athletic ability,” Laughman said. “It’s also a gender-friendly sport with a gender rule which ensures that teams are balanced so men and women can work together.”

Recipe of the week: Zucchini and Yellow Squash Casserole Maddie Walsh Staff Writer

With spring break racing to meet us, the struggle to reveal a beach-ready body while fighting chill-induced junk food cravings is evident. After a long day of trekking across the tundra that has become our campus, all anyone really wants is to binge on pizza while Edward Scissor-handing two bags of Doritos. But worry not beach-bound Raiders, because this zucchini and yellow squash casserole is sure to satisfy your appetite without getting in the way of those soon-to-be sculpted abs.

Ingredients: 1 large zucchini squash 1/2 sweet onion 1/4 cup grated parmesan Salt and pepper to taste Cutting board

1 large yellow squash 1/4 cup butter 1 cup marinara sauce baking dish

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Cut the zucchini and squash into long thin slices before thinly slicing half of the sweet onion.

3. Lightly grease the baking dish with nonstick spray and layer the squash, zucchini and onion in the dish.

4. Spoon marinara sauce, sprinkle parmesan cheese and add slices of butter in between the veggies while also adding dashes of salt and pepper to taste.

5. Continue this layering process until you have used all ingredients, or until dish is filled.

6. Place covered baking dish into the oven for 20–30 minutes.

A Raider’s View: driving under the influence Raider Muse

Staff Columnist Imagine you’re at a party. The music is loud and it feels like there is a million people there, plus you. Someone offers you a drink, and you feel pressured to take it.

You drink it too fast because you have no idea how quickly alcohol can affect your state of mind. After a while, you feel the urge to go home.

You think you are fine to drive.

Don’t.

Every year, approximately 1,700 college students die in car accidents because of drunk driving.

About 600,000 more college students are injured while under the influence, according to West Virginia University’s Student’s Center of Health.

This sobering fact should be an awakening to the amount of harm that drinking and driving can do to you and others.

According to Shippensburg University Campus Safety & Security/Fire Statistics, in 2015 there were six cases of university students driving under the influence, 10 cases of public

drunkenness and 115 arrests made because of liquor law violations.

Driving drunk has more consequences than you may think.

Fines in Pennsylvania can reach up to $300 on your first offense, $2,500 on your second and $5,000 on your third, according to dui.drivinglaws. org.

After the second offense, you could also have your license suspended for up to a year.

So, the next time someone offers you a drink, remember that drinking and driving is an offense that can take your life, or the life of people in the car and on the road.

If you know you will be drinking that night, find a friend or a designated driver to ensure you get home safely.

Another alternative is to be responsible with alcohol and be aware of how much you drink, and never take drinks from strangers.

Slater of the week: Logan Wein Sylvia McMullen

Asst. PR Director Sophomore Logan Wein is a Shippensburg University student from South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. A communication/ journalism major and an international studies minor, Wein is an active student who balances school work with leadership positions in many campus organizations.

Wein joined The Slate staff in spring 2016 as an assistant public relations director. Since starting his position, Wein has created flyers, programs and social media posts to advertise events for The Slate. Wein and other staff members are also planning the

upcoming Slate and WSYC 60th anniversary celebration, which is set to occur at the end of April.

Recently, Wein started a Campus Crew to support the apparel brand Love Your Melon. By partnering with nonprofit organizations, Love Your Melon donates profits to support pediatric cancer research, hoping to one day find a cure for the disease.

Having experience with MiniThon in high school inspired Wein to continue raising awareness for pediatric cancer.

“It’s just another way for me to give back to those who don’t have the same opportunities as me,” said Wein.

“I’m excited for my crew to grow so we can do events for kids with cancer,” Wein said. “I want

my crew to love it.”

Wein also fills many roles in SU’s Student Government. As a representative for the Class of 2019, Wein voices the desires of his fellow classmates in student government decisions. Wein serves on the public relations committee as well, and helps plan events such as Homecoming Student Government sponsored dinners. As Ceddia Union Building Committee Chair, Wein also reports to the CUB with ideas and insights from students.

Between school work and leadership positions, Wein likes spending time with friends. He enjoys photography and shoots both portraits and scenery. Wein also enjoys skiing and traveling, and hopes to one day visit Aus-

Women’s basketball keeps rolling against Golden Bears • Win streak improves to 13, second-longest under Kristy Trn • The Raiders are currently shooting 47.7 percent from the field - 5th in Division II • The Raiders return to action Wednesday against Lock Haven

Blair Garrett Asst. Sports Editor The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team surged past the Kutztown University Golden Bears in the second half of Wednesday’s matchup, 71–53.

Both teams struggled to find their respective offenses at the beginning of the game. A few miscues on both ends kept the score neck-and-neck.

SU started the game strong defensively, limiting three of the Golden Bears’ starters to just two total points in the first quarter.

SU’s Steph Knauer took over in the second, lighting up Kutztown with 12 of her 20 points. The Golden Bears had no answer for Knauer, who shot nearly 90 percent from the

field. Knauer’s dominant play gave the Raiders a slight lead at halftime, but more importantly, it gave SU some momentum breaking into the third.

Spreading the ball around the floor has been the team’s bread and butter this season. The message at the half was to get back to that style of play.

“Our main goal coming out of halftime was just to execute our offense better against their 1-3-1 zone,” head coach Kristy Trn said.

With the Golden Bears keying in on Knauer, lanes for the rest of the Raiders’ offense opened up. Haley Scullion and Logan Snyder facilitated the offense all night, threading passes down low and back out to the perimeter through the Golden Bears’ defense. Scullion and Snyder totaled 10 assists on the night.

“You’ve got to give a lot of credit to Haley Scullion. She came off the bench and helped execute our offense very well,” Trn said. “She has been a consistent defensive spark plug for us as well, so I think that sort of got things in a different mindset for the girls, and then things just started to click.”

Shippensburg then doubled Kutztown’s point output in the third, dropping 25 against KU’s struggling defense.

The Raiders held a 22-point lead at the end of the third quarter. Large leads have become commonplace this season, as SU has won all of its last 12 games by 10 points or more.

With a comfortable lead led by Shippensburg’s senior core, the Raiders’ role players were able to come into the game to close out the victory.

Under Trn’s 18-year tenure, this has been Shippensburg’s second-longest win streak. After starting the year 5–5, the Raiders have caught fire.

“They’ve played phenomenal,” Trn said. “I’m very proud of how they’ve responded to the struggles that we had earlier on in the season. They certainly didn’t quit, and they have done a very good job of coming together as a team on the floor and off the floor.”

The team now has a three-game lead in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division with just five regular-season games remaining.

SU’s win over Kutztown secured a seed in the PSAC tournament for the team. With just a handful of games left, the Raiders now have an oppor-

tunity to clinch the top spot in the East.

The Raiders hit the road to Nelson Field House on Saturday for the final matchup of the season against the Huskies of Bloomsburg University.

Once again, bench contributions ignited the Raiders with Saturday’s star being Victoria Blackburn. Shippenburg blitzed the Huskies 82–56.

Both Blackburn and Lauren Gold teamed up to drop 31 points, striking outside the 3-line early and often with eight 3-pointers against Bloomsburg.

The Raiders’ win marks their 13th in a row, one shy of tying SU’s best win streak under coach Trn. SU hits the court again Wednesday against Lock Haven University.

William Whisler Sports Editor The third chapter in a bitter rivalry came to an end, with the Shippensburg University men’s basketball team (18–2, 14–2 PSAC) falling at Heiges Field House to Kutztown University (17–2, 13–2 PSAC), 81– 75.

The loss marked SU’s second on the season, and came at the hands of the No. 10 Golden Bears. The Raiders fell behind by as much as 17 points, but a strong second-half push brought SU within four points.

“I’m proud that the guys kept competing and they didn’t give up,” SU head coach Chris Fite said.

“That was one thing to take away from tonight. In saying that, it’s disappointing. It was a tremendous opportunity we had and it didn’t feel like we had the energy that was nec-

essary in a game like that,” Fite continued.

The Raiders had no answer for Kutztown’s Ethan Ridgeway, who scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds and eight assists.

Kutztown’s Dan Cuevas had 18 points and eight rebounds.

Dustin Sleva tied his career-high with 28 points in the game. He also pulled in seven rebounds.

Abe Massaley scored 17 points and added four assists, while Clay Conner added a season-high 10 points off the bench.

The Raiders have now lost backto-back games after starting the year with 18 consecutive wins. The Raiders defense has been an issue, as opponents have shot more than 50 percent from the field in back-toback games.

“We’ve got to defend better,” Fite said. “The last two games, the teams have shot better than 50 percent,

and you’re not going to beat many teams in this league if you can’t stop them. That is something that we’ve hung our hat on all year long — was our ability to defend and stop teams.

And that’s kind of left us the last few games.”

The back-to-back losses left the Raiders facing uncharted territory going into its matchup against Bloomsburg University on Feb. 4 at Nelson Field House.

But SU rebounded in a huge way, knocking off the rival Huskies 84–59 behind an outstanding day from Sleva who scored 28 points and hauled in 18 rebounds.

Despite leading by six at the half, the Raiders took over the game in the final 20 minutes. SU hit four-consecutive 3-pointers out of the locker room — three of which were off the sharp-shooting Justin McCarthur.

McCarthur and Sleva dominated in the second half, scoring a com-

bined 36 points in the frame to seal the win. Sleva scored 10 points in an 18–4 SU run that put the Raiders up 23 points with 9:54 left to play.

With his 28 points Saturday, Sleva has scored 20 or more points in five of his last seven games. McCarthur also set a new career high with 26 points. 20 of those points came in the second half.

The Raiders also improved defensively, limiting Bloomsburg to just more than 35 percent shooting in the game. The mark was the second-lowest shooting percentage allowed to a PSAC team by SU this season. Their highest mark came when it held West Chester University to just more than 23 percent shooting on Jan. 11.

SU finished the night shooting just moer than 54 percent from the field, including 58.6 percent in the second half.

The Raiders, now 19–2, 15–2 in the PSAC, prepare to host Lock Ha-

ven University on Wednesday night at Heiges Field House. SU won the first meeting against the Bald Eagles with an 86–70 road win at Thomas Field House. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Wrestling wins two of three on Alumni Day Nate Powles Asst. Sports Editor

The Shippensburg University wrestling team returned home Saturday after a lengthy road trip to take on Wheeling Jesuit University, West Liberty University and Long Island University Post (LIU Post).

SU came to Heiges Field House missing several key wrestlers because of various injuries. One of those missing was Evan Ramos, who is nationally ranked in the 197-pound weight class.

Saturday was Alumni Day, and many former members of the SU wrestling team came to the meet.

More than 25 alumni were in attendance, including Chris Barrick and Bill Corman.

Barrick led the Raiders in pins in the ’07–’08 season with nine. Corman served as both SU’s wrestling coach and athletic director during his tenure that spanned from the 1950s to the mid-1980s.

Twenty-three of Corman’s 26 wrestling teams had winning records.

Two of those teams were nationally ranked in NCAA Division I. Unfortunately, SU was not able to channel Corman’s winning presence at the beginning of the day.

The team started off poorly, dropping its match against Wheeling Jesuit by a score of 37–4.

The Raiders then rebounded versus West Liberty (20-19) and LIU Post (26-19) to end their day.

Wheeling Jesuit is currently ranked No. 2 in Super Region I and No. 8 in Division II and cruised to victory over SU. The Raiders only won one bout during the match which came from junior Mike Springer who earned a major decision.

SU forfeited two bouts to Wheeling Jesuit because of various injuries. The Raiders also only gave up one pin in the match. The rest of its losses came by decisions, including a couple of major decisions.

SU’s next match against West Liberty had a very controversial ending.

The two teams were tied, 19–19, at the end of the match, so the officials needed to look at the overall point scores to break the tie.

The Raiders had the advantage in

overall points with a score of 38–33, so SU was awarded the victory.

Junior Dustin Steffenino opened the match for the Raiders and came away with a 3–1 decision to capture the early lead. Steffenino won twoof-three bouts on the day.

Springer then pinned his opponent just more than a minute into the bout to give the Raiders the advantage midway through the match.

Springer won 13-of-14 matches since the beginning of 2017. He also leads the team in pins with nine for the season. His overall record improved to 18–6 after his three wins on Saturday.

Junior Cody Blankenship also contributed to SU’s win with a major decision at the 157-pound weight class.

His 13–0 victory was a large reason the Raiders secured the tiebreaker at the end of the match.

The Raiders were down 16–19 heading into the final bout of the match, so it came down to freshman Derek Berberick. Berberick recorded an 8–2 decision in his heavyweight bout, which tied the match at 19.

The officials went through two other criteria for the tiebreaker, but they had to resort to the third, which was the overall point total. The other two criteria were the number of bouts won and how many six-point victories each had (pin or forfeit).

Both teams had five victories and both had one six-point victory apiece, so the officials were forced to use the third criteria, which ultimately gave the Raiders the win.

The loss dropped West Liberty to 1–13 on the season.

SU’s final opponent of the day was LIU Post, which also had a few injuries. There were five total bouts that were forfeited, including a double forfeit. SU forfeited two bouts at 141 and 197 pounds and LIU Post forfeited two at 149 and 184 pounds. The double forfeit was at 174 pounds.

The Raiders grabbed the momentum immediately. Steffenino opened the match with a technical fall just less than five minutes into the bout.

Freshman Cole Rush dropped the following match, conceding a major decision at 133 pounds. The score was 5–4 in favor of the Raiders after the first two bouts.

feits by both teams. Springer picked up his third win of the day with a pin victory to give SU a 17–10 lead.

Freshman Ryan Narber followed up Springer’s win with one of his own. LIU Post did not come close again.

Following forfeits from both teams, the final bout of the match did

not have much weight in terms of the points. The Raiders were up 26–16, and it was now mathematically impossible for LIU Post to win.

Nevertheless, the match went on, and Berberick dropped the bout. At one point in the fight, Berberick’s opponent, James Louison, seemed to get cut at the top of his head and

needed to be bandaged up before continuing.

That bout ended the day for the Raiders, who improved their overall record to 12–12.

SU will travel to the University of Pitt-Johnstown to fight the No. 11 Mountain Cats on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Hunt and Shupp stand out at meet Catherine Amoriello Managing Editor

The Shippensburg University men’s and women’s track-and-field teams traveled to Susquehanna University on Friday evening in the hopes of gaining more Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times and marks.

Sarah Hunt exceeded expectations when she shattered her own record in the long jump with a mark of 20 feet and 1/2 inch. The impressive jump automatically qualified her for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships and places her No. 1 among the NCAA Division II competition. Hunt also excelled on the track, winning the 60-meter dash final with a time of 7.8 seconds.

Danielle Sciremammano also had a nice showing in the long jump with a new personal record of 18 feet and 7 inches. The mark earned her second place at the meet as well as an NCAA-Provisional qualification.

On the track, Cirsten Kelly took first in the 400-meter race, breaking the 60-second barrier with a time of 59.39 seconds.

On the field, Paige Shirk came out on top in the weight throw with a winning mark of 51 feet and 6 1/2 inches.

Bryan Pearson and Alec Rideout represented SU well on the field with two first-place finishes. Pearson won the weight throw event with a mark of 53 feet and 4 1/4 inches while Rideout took shot put with a mark of

51 feet and 11 1/4 inches. For Rideout the mark was NCAA-Provisional worthy.

There were a total of 14 women and seven men who had PSAC-qualifying events.

The SU track-and-field squad will split next week to compete in both the Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston and the Bucknell Tune-Up meet.

Softball opens season with power in North Carolina Nate Powles Asst. Sports Editor The Shippensburg University softball team traveled to North Carolina for a weekend tournament to open its season, finishing with a record of 4–1.

SU’s opponents were the University of North Carolina (UNC) Pembroke, Winston-Salem State University and West Virginia State University.

The team played two games on Friday, beating UNC-Pembroke (7– 3) and Winston-Salem State (10–0).

The game against Winston-Salem was ended in the fifth inning when SU increased its lead.

One of the standouts of the day was freshman Emily Zaring who hit a home run in her first collegiate atbat. She ended the first day of the season going 5-for-6 with six RBIs. On Saturday, the team took on West Virginia State and Winston-Salem State.

Once again, the Raiders showed off their offensive power, winning the games by scores of 5–0 and 10–2, respectively. There were several players with multiple hits on the day.

After going 4-for-7 with two steals

on Friday, junior Chloe Collins had a great second day, going 5-for-8 with two more steals and four RBIs. She also pitched her first career complete-game shutout on the mound.

Zaring also had a strong follow-up to her debut, earning three more RBIs to give her nine through four games.

The Raiders were behind in their second game against Winstom-Salem going into the fifth inning, but an offensive explosion put them in the lead.

The team scored nine runs in three innings to go from down 2–1 to up 10–2, which was the final score.

After stealing eight bases the previous day, the Raiders added seven more to their total Saturday. They had 33 in all of last season.

Junior Macy Luck had a decent day with two hits, one RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases.

SU wrapped up its weekend against UNC-Pembroke on Sunday, but dropped the game by a score of 6–1. It was the Raiders’ first loss of the season.

UNC-Pembroke’s pitcher, Abbey Walters, threw a complete game with four strikeouts, only allowing one run. She also contributed on offense with a three-run home run in

the third inning, which was more than enough for UNC-Pembroke.

The Raiders’ offense was unable to get momentum for the first time over the weekend. They racked up six hits against Walters, which was more than she had given up in her previous two games combined, but they were unable to bring those players in to score.

Collins and Tara Bicko were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Collins went 2-1 on the mound while also batting .556 with six RBIs. Bicko hit .333 with two RBIs. The team will travel to Myrtle Beach in two weeks.

The recruiting trail reached one of its last stops last week as the Shippensburg University football team released its first list of committed recruits during National Signing Day on Wednesday.

The list included 18 high school seniors who signed a national letter of intent or an institutional letter to solidify their spot on the Red Raiders’ roster.

National Signing Day is the first day that teams can officially add players to their respective rosters.

It also marks a turning point in the offseason, as teams can devote more attention to the upcoming 2017 campaign.

Last year, the Red Raiders finished 7–4, with a 4–3 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division. The team had lofty goals of winning the PSAC title in both 2015 and 2016, but ulti-

mately fell short in both years.

In 2015, the Red Raiders controlled the PSAC East Division heading into their final game versus Kutztown University, but lost it on the road.

In 2016, SU finished in third place in the PSAC East after losing close games to rivals Bloomsburg University, Kutztown and West Chester University.

With a new class in place, the Red Raider coaches can now breathe a little easier and assess who is going to help get them over the hump in 2017 to capture a PSAC title.

SU alumnus Kuhn and Saints agree to one-year extension William Whisler Sports Editor The chants of “KUUUUHHHHNN” will ring out for at least one more season in New Orleans.

According to NOLA.com, the Saints resigned Shippensburg University standout John Kuhn to a one-year extension.

The contract is for the veteran minimum, and includes an $80,000 signing bonus.

This year, Kuhn enters his 12th season in the NFL, and his second with the Saints. Kuhn previously played eight seasons with the Green Bay Packers before the Packers decided to part ways with the former Red Raider in favor of Aaron Ripkowski.

Kuhn had 18 carries for 37 yards and four touchdowns last season with the Saints. He also caught 16 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. Over the course of his NFL career, Kuhn has rushed for 656 yards on 216 carries, and has caught 98 passes for

642 yards and nine touchdowns.

Kuhn’s year was a productive one.

The former Packer joined the Saints in August when the team needed an injury replacement for Austin Johnson, but Kuhn’s five touchdowns turned his part-time blocking role and short-yardage rushing game into a valuable commodity for the team.

Kuhn has been selected to four Pro Bowls and has hoisted the Lombardi Trophy twice in his career, once with the Steelers in 2006 and again with the Packers in 2011.

At SU, Kuhn compiled 4,685 rushing yards, 53 touchdowns, 5,300 all-purpose yards and 26 games with at least 100 yards rushing. All of his achievements set Red Raider records. In 2003, Kuhn won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Offensive Player of the Year Award, and he was a three-time PSAC Western Division First Team selection.

SU keeps door open to all, rejects travel ban

SU’s Interim President Barbara Lyman sent a message to the community, saying SU welcomes all people. Lyman said the White House’s travel ban does not directly affect students.

Immigrants and refugees are welcome at Shippensburg University, regardless of where they come from or what their religion is.

Three days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order restricting travel to the United States from seven countries, SU Interim President Barbara Lyman issued a message to the community.

Lyman said SU welcomes everyone. The Slate agrees with Lyman, supports her choice to send a message to the community and disavows Trump’s executive order “Protecting the nation from foreign terrorists and entry into the United States.”

We do not see immigrants and refugees from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Yemen and Somalia as a threat to the SU community. We believe we are safe and the strict vetting process in place for immigrants and refugees is sufficient.

The threat of terrorism and violence is real, and Trump’s executive order has good intentions. The problem is that it does more harm to America than it does good. It effectively divides people, hurts diplomatic relationships and excludes Muslims from the American community.

We are a country of immigrants, a beacon for refu-

gees and a haven for rejects. The fabric of this nation was woven by people of all strides. To deny entry to a person based on where they were born is to deny our own right to be Americans.

Trump’s action was not a response to terrorism, but a reaction to fear. By excluding millions of people, most of whom are Muslim, Americans will not learn and understand foreign cultures. We will begin to fear the people from these seven countries and anyone who is Muslim.

If this country continues to give into fear it will lose its friends and allies abroad. We will no longer trust or be trusted by the good men and women in these seven countries who also want to combat terrorism.

While America may pull down an iron curtain over the Middle East and live in fear, we hope SU does not follow. We hope the campus remains a place to share ideas and cultures. We hope we can continue to learn from each other and explore our differences. We hope we can work together to maintain our security and way of life.

If we are to deny anything, let it be fear.

Let’s take the good with the bad about Donald Trump: On the positive side, he has rendered utterly useless those clocks the news networks like to put up as part of their screen clutter.

They count down the seconds till some major event occurs, days or even weeks away. But even when President Trump declares when he’s going to announce some big decision, that can change the moment he needs to deflect attention from a mess. In other words, his schedule is no schedule.

That’s terrific, because these idiot clocks had been procreating like they needed a sex-education class.

Since his inauguration, Trump and Stephen Bannon, his chief strategist -who really is the alt-right hemisphere of Trump’s brain -- have repeatedly stepped in it, rushing through a series of executive orders based on his campaign promises. None fouled the infant presidency like the stench from his hastily concocted immigration policy, which managed to be inhumane, anti-Muslim and ineffective all at the same time. In other words, it was an impetuous mess, wreaking total havoc and causing an explosion of outrage.

Besides being cruel and bigoted, the executive order was an enforcement disaster because almost no one had been consulted. Interestingly, the president just recently acknowledged that such coordination is useful. Speaking to a Christian Broadcasting Network interviewer about his upcoming Supreme Court nomination, he described approvingly “the vetting -- they call it the vet-

ting process and the vetting process is very, very strong.”

So Donald Trump comprehends the concept of vetting. There had been strong evidence to the contrary: His entire slam-bang flurry of executive orders did not seem to benefit from any of the careful analysis that usually accompanies such momentous decisions -- Were they even doable? Had anyone given serious thought to their consequences?

He began with his promised gutting of health care. Even Trump’s fellow Republicans are worried that their years of posturing might become reality. Tom MacArthur of New Jersey spoke of the millions of people with pre-existing conditions covered under Obamacare and warned his fellow Republicans in their supposedly secret meeting, “We’re telling those people that we’re not going to pull the rug out from under them, and if we do this too fast, we are in fact going to pull the rug out from under them.”

Then it was onward and downward.

His dictate to get That Wall built and his outright nastiness to Mexico has so antagonized the citizens south of the border that he could turn the country into another Cuba.

Now he has handed down an abominable decree barring visas for people traveling from several Muslim countries -- particularly Syrian refugees -and favoring Christians.

Predictably, his Supreme Court announcement was moved up. What better distraction from one snit storm than to come up with another? So far, all he’s really succeeded in doing is to create chaos and turn our country into an international pariah. To many around the world, America the Beautiful has turned into America the Ugly.

Maybe the news networks can show the Doomsday Clock. The keepers of it say that the Donald Trump presidency has moved us substantially closer to world annihilation. ‘America’s Got Talent’ group coming to Luhrs Marissa Merkt A&E Editor

The H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center is getting ready for a show that will be done in complete darkness.

On Wednesday the iLuminate dance group will bring its glow-inthe-dark suits and endless energy to Shippensburg. iLuminate first caught the nation’s attention after appearing on Season 6 of “America’s Got Talent” in 2011. While on the show the group was called “the best new act in America” and ended up placing third after jazz singer Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. and shadow dancers group Silhouettes.

Since the show, iLuminate has been performing worldwide in places like Hong Kong and Egypt. Recently, the group started touring in the United States again. iLuminate presents a story of romance and adventure displayed through various high-powered dance styles with the aid of light. Dancers move like robots in synchronism.

Each performer flashes across the stage and then disappears into darkness. Some even appear to fly in the air, as performers in black lift them.

Miral Kotb founded iLuminate in 2009 to combine her two interests of dance and software engineering.

iLuminate dance group is gearing up for a night of bright lights and high energy performance.

She developed customized wireless lighting programs to accommodate dance routines. Kotb’s technology has been used in performances by Grammy-winning performers like Christina Aguilera and The Black Eyed Peas. In addition, iLuminate performed on several television shows and appeared off-Broadway, on a smaller stages.

iLuminate is passionate about educating children on how dance and technology can come together. The group provides week-long workshops in Central Asia and New Zealand for grade school children to gain behindthe-scenes insight on how performances work.

SU paints way to Cupani’s artistic future Molly Foster

Asst. A&E Editor Spending five to six hours a day in the basement of Huber Art Center tapping into her artistic side, art must pulsate through the veins of senior art major Alessandra Cupani.

Coming from a family of artists, it may be safe to say this is the case for Cupani.

The art exhibition by Cupani, “Portraits: A Concept,” is currently featured in Huber Art Center’s Brindle Art Gallery. The exhibition will remain open to the public through Thursday during gallery hours, and features six oil painting portraits — only a portion of Cupani’s entire 18-piece portrait collection.

“This isn’t my first exhibition,” Cupani said. Her artwork has been shown in galleries five times since she started her education at Shippensburg University. One of those galleries was her senior showcase this past December.

Although she has had her artwork under the scrutiny of the public on multiple occasions, the sense of vulnerability that accompanies putting her work out there is something that Cupani has yet to overcome.

“It’s intimidating to show my work to someone who has no insight on why I constructed my pieces the way I did,” Cupani said. “I think that ev-

Alice Neel, an American visual artist from Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, is Cupani’s primary visual muse for her artwork. Cupani admires Neel’s disregard of realistic proportions and convention, and her inventive approaches and techniques. Hyperrealism is a style that Cupani enjoys

incorporating in her work, as well.

Each portrait is subjective and unconventional in the sense that it is not a lifelike image of an individual.

But, at the same time, it is detailed enough to be an identifiable person.

Cupani’s artwork does branch away from Neel’s. Cupani discretely integrates underlying themes into her artwork that are significant to her. She also finds artistic vision in situations and emotions that she was

exposed to in her personal life.

“My sister got really sick a year ago,” Cupani said, “and I tried to create these portraits in a way that personified how her physicality was an entirely different image than the image that she saw when she looked in the mirror.”

Cupani thinks the theme portrayed in her collection is important for college students in particular to keep in mind. She also encourages them to strive to come to terms with their self-image, as it is a reoccurring problem that many struggle with.

“I hope to have my works communicate how one feels [the] inside, rather than what is reflected on the outside — whether it be age, disability or any other external factor,” Cupani said.

Art has played a significant part in Cupani’s life since she was a young girl, and has only amplified as she got older.

“My dad was an oil painter,” Cupani said. “So I grew up with art.

When we went out to eat when I was younger, I would always doodle on napkins. I was always doodling or doing something artsy.”

However, with time, creativity and a soon-to-be degree in art, her doodles have transformed into masterpieces.

“I’ve definitely grown as an artist since I first started here at Ship,” Cupani said. “I learned that your

work ethic really does translate into a smoother process and an amplified final project.”

Cupani is excited to see what art leads her to after graduation and hopes to continue to expand her knowledge in art with graduate studies.

“I’ve applied to some grad schools such as Pratt Institute of Art in NYC, Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and IUP to further my studies in art and oil painting and absorb and apply the new knowledge and techniques that I will learn along the way.”

Two worlds collided Friday night for one common love — art.

Shippensburg Arts Programming and Education’s (SHAPE) Gallery welcomed its new Reinventing Traditions exhibit featuring digital collage artist John P. Wise and glass blower Mike Peluso.

As visitors filtered in, Beatles music played in the background providing a liberating mood. The gallery was enveloped with multiple digital collages on its walls. passed. Some of the glass creations looked as if they were folding over in a floppy fashion, which is done by spinning the hot glass.

Peluso has been recognized as one of the up-and-coming glass artists on the East Coast. He operates a soft glass and flameworking studio in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and gives individualized lessons. Peluso’s work has been featured at SHAPE Gallery during the Give the Gift of Art exhibit and SHAPE’s annual Christmas party in December, where he did a live demonstration.

Peluso invests a lot of time and care into each piece that he makes.

He strives to make every customer satisfied.

“In life, the recycling of material, the destruction and the creation of forms creates a balance in nature,”

Peluso said in the SHAPE brochure.

“In order to achieve this balance and happiness within my own life, there must be an exchange of energy between the large picture and the artist.”

Wise has used his creative talent across a vast field of careers which include graphic designing, furniture building and picture framing — a job he served for the White House.

Eventually, he turned to creating abstract images through a combination of scans, graphic elements, paint and photographs. Wise creates traditional formats presented in a contemporary medium. He participates in multiple one-man shows across the Maryland region.

The exhibit will remain on display at SHAPE Gallery until Feb. 23.
