Welcome to the RSC. Our first season as Co-Artistic Directors is now underway and we are so excited to see people coming through the doors to experience the Company’s work.
Our mission is to bring stories to life – on our stages, in classrooms, in communities and in the virtual sphere. Shakespeare is our touchstone, and from the moment the Memorial Theatre became the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1961, stories by other writers have stood shoulder to shoulder with Shakespeare in our theatres, sometimes in delicate conversation, sometimes in fierce contention. As well as plays by Shakespeare, this season offers brand new plays, a Restoration comedy, a retelling of a classic fairy tale and a story from one of Shakespeare’s contemporaries.
If you can, do spend an hour or so in the beautiful surroundings of the Swan Gardens enjoying our compact and joyful new version of As You Like It in The Holloway Garden Theatre. This much-loved outdoor theatre will also be home to the latest production from RSC Next Generation –The Two Gentlemen of Verona – as well as offerings from other companies who’ve travelled from near and far to share their stories.
On your visit, you’ll find a cafe on the river, a restaurant on the roof, Susie’s Bar in The Other Place, our free exhibition The Play’s The Thing showcasing objects from our almost 150 years of theatre making, as well as hundreds of events in unexpected places. As we celebrate other art forms and reach across borders, you’ll also be able to enjoy visiting productions from Northern Ballet and from the Uzhhorod Theatre of Ukraine.

1770s London, where the aristocracy’s morals have plunged lower than the necklines on the women’s gowns. The vicious Lady Sneerwell enjoys ruining reputations for pleasure, and her latest target is the young bachelor Charles Surface — why should this pretentious little rake inherit his uncle’s fortune? Together with Charles’ conniving brother Joseph, Sneerwell orchestrates an elaborate scheme of intrigue and infidelity that’s sure to ruffle all the right feathers — hopefully.
After Shakespeare but long before Bridgerton, there was The School for Scandal, Sheridan’s brilliantly biting comedy of manners in five acts. This new production — styled to the nines with period flair — promises an exuberant feast of big wigs and even bigger laughs.
Tinuke Craig, Artistic Associate at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, directs. Recent work includes Jitney (The Old Vic for Headlong), The Color Purple (Leicester Curve) and Crave (Chichester).

A forest, several disguises and a lot of love poetry later, will they find their way back to each other? Love at first sight isn’t quite as straightforward as you might think...
Feel the wind through the trees of the Forest of Arden as you enjoy As You Like It in our outdoor venue, The Holloway Garden Theatre. At just 1 hour 20 minutes long, this edited version is a great first introduction to Shakespeare, or just a lovely way to see his timeless comedy in the glorious surroundings of the Swan Theatre Gardens.

Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world, or so they say.
When an orphaned young woman is taken in by some local do-gooders, she is expected to be seen and not heard. Dazzled by a pair of beautiful shoes, she sees the chance to do and be so much more, but soon her feet betray her, taking her to places she does not wish to go.
This Christmas, get up close to the magic as playwright Nancy Harris brings Hans Christian Andersen’s dark fairy tale into the 21st century in the intimate surroundings of the Swan Theatre.
Directed by Kimberley Rampersad (Associate Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival, Canada) in her RSC debut, The Red Shoes is both a magical story and cautionary tale of pride, vanity and how we all deserve to dance how we wish to dance.

wayward is this foolish love...’
One friend wants to see the world, whilst the other stays home: for a girl. Soon the two friends are brought together again in the court of Milan, where one will quickly forget his love back home and betray the other – all in the name of love, or jealousy. The Duke of Milan’s daughter, the focus of the friends' love, will not have her mind changed by the plots and plans and when the girl from back home shows up disguised, these two young “gentlemen” have to face the music.
A fresh air approach to Shakespeare’s early romantic comedy – where first loves, betrayal and a dog all collide in music and mayhem.
This production is created and performed by the RSC Next Generation Act Young Company, made up of 24 young people aged 13-18 from across England. They are supported by behind-the-scenes creatives drawn from our Next Generation Direct and Backstage programmes.
Next Generation is our talent development programme for young theatre makers across England recruited through the RSC Associate Schools Programme. We work in long term partnership with Next Generation company members to support them to develop skills for life and work

When Russia invaded Ukraine, thousands of people found refuge in the small town of Uzhhorod in western Ukraine. Local Director Vyacheslav Yehorov saw the parallels between the refugees’ experience and the themes of King Lear, and involved them in the creation of his play.
The result is a compelling new production threaded through with a haunting sense of loss.
King Lear is performed in Ukrainian without surtitles.

Conference is a programme of creative and participatory events reflecting the messiness of agreement, negotiation and hope that collided at COP3 in Kyoto – when in a moment of miraculous unanimity the world stood together.
