GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

I

HERE WE ARE ALREADY IN NOVEMBER!

I am not sure where the time goes, but it sure flies by quickly. As I reflect on the summer and fall, I am once again amazed at all the activities and events that happen across the province. We saw another very successful series of Junior Shows with significant increases in participants. These are always the highlight of my summer with the enthusiasm and energy these young people bring with them. For many, it is their first time in the show ring and it always amazes me to see how much these young show people grow and learn over the summer when we see them again at the county shows later in the year. This summer also saw the return of the Inter-County Dairy Youth Judging Competition. It has been four years since this event was held and it came back strong. You can read more about this event further into The Link as well as the report from the Ontario Team that travelled to Madison to compete in the US National Judging Competition. Another provincial judging school was held in conjunction with the Summer Show in Lindsay which saw several international and out of province judges participate in addition to our own provincial judges. And of course, the full run of County Holstein Shows kept us busy through to October. Rounding out the month was the Ontario Dairy Youth Award winners’ trip to Alberta to tour farms and attend the Westerner Dairy Showcase. Now we are gearing up for the TD Classic 4-H Dairy Show at the Royal Winter Fair and the All Ontario Awards. Not to mention a winter full of Club AGM’s, Provincial Convention in London and the National Holstein Convention in Hamilton. It is busy to say the least but what makes it fun and interesting is all the people we meet along the way and the committee members and industry partners we get to work with for all of these events. This industry is like no other. The passion, the dedication, the camaraderie, and genuine love of the Holstein community is something to be proud of. Nothing we do at the branch would be possible without the long list of volunteers and partners that all come together to make these events possible. This includes all the local Holstein Club volunteers that organize your twilight meetings, breeders’ cups and county shows, golf tournaments, banquets, AGM’s….the list goes on. Next time you see a club director, show volunteer, provincial director, or industry sponsor please remember to pass along your thanks – without them we would not have the programs we all enjoy.

I hope you all can find a few minutes this fall to pause and reflect on everything you have to be grateful for and to appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this great Holstein community.

Once again, I say to all of you THANK YOU – I look forward to many more opportunities to work together and offer amazing programs and events that help develop future leaders and showcase the many talents of Ontario producers.

Welcome to Olivia Dunn Marketing & Communications Coordinator The team at Holstein Ontario is excited to welcome Olivia Dunn as the new Marketing and Communications Coordinator. Her love of agriculture began at a young age with stories from her grandparent’s dairy farm, Hughjosa Holsteins in Springvale. Formally educated at Conestoga College in Communications and Public Relations, she comes to us with a strong background in marketing, social media and communications. Olivia is eager to dive into her role at Holstein Ontario and deepen her understanding of the dairy industry. Putting together this issue of The Link has been one of her first tasks with the team and she is “thankful that I get to work with this talented and supportive team every day. I am excited to learn and grow within Holstein Ontario.” In her free time, Olivia enjoys spending every moment she can in nature, whether it’s cycling on a trail, or just exploring the beautiful Paris Ontario, where she lives with her partner Russell and her cat Max.

MOLLY MACMILLAN Molly MacMillan, Data and Information Specialist, left the branch in August. She was very involved in many programs and events across the province: A friendly face at many county and regional shows, the wizard behind all the reports in the Link magazine, the All-Ontario Competition, the Heart of the Herd awards and the creator of our new website. She has certainly left her mark on the branch and she will be missed by all of us at the office. We wish her much success in her new position as Education and Extension Specialist at Holstein Canada.

Shelley Barfoot-O’Neill Branch & Event Support Admin Born and raised on Kenarbara Farms in Northern Grey County, Shelley was actively involved in working on her family’s purebred Holstein farm along with her parents Ken and Barb Barfoot, who were very involved in Holstein activities, showing, as well as the 4-H program in Grey County. After attending the University of Guelph Diploma program, she worked at the Holstein Journal, working with wonderful mentors, and continuing her passion for the Holstein Breed. Shelley has been involved in the Not-for-Profit Sector for over 35 years, mostly in membership and program delivery. Shelley and her husband Brian reside near Kleinburg, where Brian has worked for Quality Holsteins for over 37 years. They have two sons, Adam, daughter in law Liz, and Shea, who are very involved in 4-H, showing and agriculture. They are proud grandparents to 7 grandsons and are kept busy with their activities including 4-H. Shelley has been a 4-H leader for over 30 years, volunteering on many local and regional committees, including the TD Classic and RAWF Jr Sheep Show, Inter County Judging and The Grey County 4-H Showdown. Besides her passion for 4-H and dairy cattle, she enjoys spending time with her Jack Russell, Kody and cheering on her favourite sports teams.

Tom and Kris of Mistyglen Creamery attended the Business Achievement Awards hosted by the London Chamber of Commerce. We’re proud to announce that Mistyglen Creamery won the award in the Agribusiness category. This resulted in Kris giving an acceptance speech while Tom tried not to look too uncomfortable in front of nearly 1200 people.

NIAGARA DINNER AT THE DAIRY SPIRIT OF 4-H WINNERS Spirit of 4-H Joanna Kapteyn of the Wiarton 4-H Dairy Club is presented with the 2023 Spirit of 4-H award by Grey County Holstein Club President Nathan Magwood recently. “Joanna is the person who puts others ahead of herself, making sure everyone works together and has fun while getting the job done. She is currently a grade 5 teacher just finishing her first year and she uses the lessons she has learned in 4-H and with animals to teach her students the importance of not only agriculture but also dedication, hard work, determination and goals.

Welcome Caleb Gordon VanNieuwenhuizen! Born at 7:18am on September 4th, 2023 weighing 7lbs 4oz, and 20.5” long. Caleb is the first child of Amanda Comfort and her husband Brandon VanNieuwenhuizen. Amanda is very active on her family’s Brookturn Holstein Farm in the Niagara Region and works currently for Holstein Canada as a Field Representative.

We live in an era where more and more consumers want to understand where their food comes from and how it is grown. Niagara Dinner at the Dairy has proven to provide concise on-farm information. In the 9 years that we have invited the public to a local dairy farm, over 15,000 consumers have come to visit to see how their milk is produced! Attendees got a wagon ride to the farm where tour guides took them through the barn where they could see the animals and learn about what cows eat, our vet supplies, healthy milk products with the Canadian milk symbol, our milkhouse and TMR, genomics and a station where they could feed and pet some baby calves. Each group got a turn in the milking parlour, learning how cows are milked, and even put the milker on a cow if they wanted! After leaving the barn, they received a meal of hamburgers or hotdogs, chocolate milk and ice cream! SUBMITTED BY

tanton Bros. Limited at Ilderton, ON, is a global leader in producing elite, deep-pedigreed, high genomic, profitable Holstein genetics. Owned and operated by Laurie and Sandy Stanton and their four adult children – twins Jim and Jeff, Greg and Amy – and their families, Stanton Farms has won two Holstein Canada Master Breeder Shields while breeding a host of high-ranking animals on Canada’s Lifetime Performance Index (LPI) lists. On November 6 & 7, the Stanton family are being honoured as the “Breeder of Distinction” at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON. Five embryos from this respected herd will be won by a lucky Classic participant in a draw the final afternoon.

Five generations of Stantons have been involved in this family operation which over the years has used the prefixes Stantons, Stanbro, Twilite and Beaupark. The herd was originally established in southwestern Ontario in the 1930s by Laurie Stanton’s grandfather and great-uncle.

Laurie took over the operation in the 1970s. In 2006, he and his family moved to their current location at Ilderton where the herd presently numbers close to 3000 head. They milk 1000 cows 3X/day in a double-30 herringbone parlour. The milk cows are fed a TMR of corn silage, haylage, brewers grain, canola, distillers grain, ground corn and supplement. Thirty full and part-time employees (including family) work on this large, progressive farm.

The drive and passion to always be on the leading edge of genetics has propelled the Stantons to the forefront of Canada’s Holstein business.

As Laurie once said, “We never take our foot off the gas, ever!” Early adopters of genomics, they genomic test all their calves. Cow families have always been at the heart of their breeding program accomplishments. Investments in numerous high profile cow families, where

they often acquired several members of those families to heighten their chance of success, laid the foundation for the Stantons’ herd. The use of IVF and conventional ET has helped them to reproduce their best genetics even faster.

While the Stantons still add the occasional new animal to their herd, today it is those tried-and-true cow families that they have worked with for generations that continue to flourish. The results speak for themselves. The Stantons consistently place multiple high-ranking cows and bulls on Canada’s Top 100 GLPI Lists. Countless bulls in A.I. units carry their prefix, bulls who not only sire daughters that excel in large commercial herd settings, but also have the type and style to win at shows. In August 2021, the Stantons had 13 homebred proven bulls in the Top 100 GLPI Bull List alone. These same homebred A.I. bulls are used heavily by the Stantons in their own herd to advance and promote their genetics.

Sher-Est Rudolph Stress-ET VG-86 49*, a Rudolph from Sher-Est Thor Soup VG-88-USA-DOM-GMD 1*, established one of their most impactful families. Purchased as a calf in 1997, Stress had over 20 sons in A.I., 15 of these earning Superior Production awards. She had 25 VG daughters and had the most daughters in the top 1000 LPI Cow List 13 times. Her daughter, Stantons Sherice VG-85-2YR 26*, was the dam of two Class Extra sons, Steady and Dundas. Another branch of the Soup family produced the esteemed brood cow, Stantons Freddie Cameo EX-91-3E 62*, who made 95,126 kg milk lifetime, had numerous sons in A.I., and nine EX and 36 VG daughters including Stantons Shamrock Coco Chanel EX-90 6*. A newly proven great-grandson of Coco Chanel’s at Semex, Stantons Cockpit, who descends from 12 generations of VG/EX maternal dams, debuted at number 22 on the August

2023 GLPI Bull List with +3527 GLPI. Another deeply ingrained family here is the Wabash-Way Emilyann-ET VG-88-2YR-USA-DOM 47* line. Emilyann’s great-granddaughter, Stantons McCutchen 1174 Agree VG-88 15*, completes 14 generations of VG/EX. An outstanding bull mother, Agree has had as many as seven proven sons in the Top 100 GLPI Bull List at one time. Her most popular, and highest-ranking son is Stantons Alligator-ET VG. This Semex owned bull has sired many show winners, including the Junior Champion at the 2022 Royal Winter Fair and World Dairy Expo. “I can still remember coming into our calf barn and seeing those first Alligator calves. They always looked like they were on the money that day,” recalls Jeff. “And we loved our first milking Alligators, still do. They have been great cows for us,” adds Jim. EastGen donated 25 doses of sexed Alligator semen to four different fund-raising events this year and raised $47,000 for three worthy causes, including the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund.

While the Stantons may never have anticipated breeding bulls who would have much impact in the “showring”, bulls like Alligator, Stantons High Octane EX-93-ST (McCutchen X Ms Chassity OBS ClaireET VG-87-2YR 24*) and Stantons Chief-ET (High Octane X Rockymountain Uno Cheyanne VG-85-2YR 14*) are doing just that! High Octane sired the Reserve Grand Champion at the Royal last year, and Chief sired the Reserve Intermediate Champion at this year’s Ontario Summer Show along with another milking class winner. “These bulls can make show cows, yet they can sire extremely useful cows for a commercial operation. They check off all the boxes and validate what we have always tried to do in our own herd which is to put value on great cows and cow families and breed good profitable cows,” say the Stantons.

“While our philosophy on breeding cows has never changed, and we still want profitable, trouble-free cows with strength, good udders, and good feet and legs, now we prefer them ‘without horns’,” says Jeff. Why Polled? “Lots of reasons,” states Jim. “Nobody likes dehorning calves.

committed to “environmental sustainability”, utilizing state-of-the-art technology and practices to lower the carbon footprint on their 2000acre farm where they grow corn, alfalfa, Italian ryegrass and canning peas. An early pioneer in agricultural-based renewable energy, the Stantons installed one of Canada’s first on-farm anaerobic digestion systems for biogas production in 2006. They built a second digester in 2021.

They have a permit to process 60,000 tons of organic waste every year.

All of the farm’s manure, plus community-based food/organic waste that otherwise would have gone to landfills, goes through their digesters. The solids that come out of the digesters are put through an aerobic composter and then used for animal bedding, while the liquid is http://barngirls.smugmug.com utilized as organic fertilizer on their fields. Their second digester produces renewable natural gas which goes into Enbridge’s natural gas pipeline system to heat 1300 homes in Ilderton.

WORLD DAIRY EXPO JUDGING COMPETITION Our Ontario Dairy Youth Judging Team made their way to Freeport, Illinois on Thursday September 28th and started their day off on Friday by joining up with 4-H, college and university teams from Kentucky, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Missouri and Ohio for some practice judging. These classes generated much discussion amongst our team members and gave them a great opportunity to prepare and practice their reasons. Saturday included a visit to the National Dairy Shrine Museum where they were greeted at the door by 96-year-old Arthur Nesbitt - the voice of World Dairy Expo for many years. Among the dairy related items on display, they could check out the photos of champion cows of all breeds, dating back to the first champion Holstein cow from 1906 who hailed from Tillsonburg, Ontario! Amazing to see how the breed has changed over the years.

There were 20 teams representing their state with Ontario being the only Canadian team invited to participate in the 4-H competition. In total, there were 78 youth participating in the competition.

Congratulations to team member Chloe Grabell for being our top team member for overall placings and overall reasons with a combined score of 680 which included three perfect placings scores. Top individual of the competition went to Natalie Clemson of Minnesota with a combined score of 712 points.

Our Ontario team combined score for placings and reasons was 1995 with the top team overall going to Minnesota with a score of 2106.

BRIAN BETTS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Brian Betts of Flesherton, Ontario, was an accomplished dairy producer and exceptional leader in Agriculture both locally and nationally. Brian’s leadership helped drive producer run organizations to collaborate more fully and reduce duplication. This led to greater efficiency which in turn ensures greater sustainability for the producer owned companies.

Initiatives to develop rural youth and support for 4H were always prioritized under Brian’s leadership. Brian’s selfless service to the community and compassion for people had a very positive impact on many individuals. This scholarship will be awarded to individuals that best display leadership and selfless service for the betterment of their community.

Outstanding Dairy Women Service Award “WE RISE BY LIFTING OTHERS”

GRANT BARKEY BLACKSTOCK, ON Grant is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program with a Major in Animal Science at the University of Guelph. On his family’s dairy, Altona Lea Farms, his responsibilities range from dehorning calves to mixing TMR and field work. Grant is very passionate about genetics and show cattle and has most recently been working as a fitter. He was also influential as the Student Federation of the OAC Class of 2026 Representative and as Logistics Assistant for the College Classic Heifer Sale and its return after a 20+ year hiatus. Following the completion of his undergraduate degree, Grant aspires to travel to New Zealand or Australia for work as a herdsman before returning to Blackstock to potentially take over the family farm.

The purpose of this award is to recognize the efforts and highlight the work and accomplishments of Ontario women who have devoted their lives to serve, promote and enhance the dairy industry. Through their dedication, they have helped to inspire others with their passion. Contributions may be made through their own family farms, within the 4-H program, local breed association, provincial committees or boards, national board or through formal work, which all working together helps to promote and preserve the dairy farm and industry in Ontario.

LEXI JOHNSTON LISTOWEL, ON Lexi is entering her 4th year in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Program with a Major in Animal Science at the University of Guelph. She was raised on her family’s dairy and grain farm, Maplevue Farms, where she started milking cows at a young age. Fast forward to today, Lexi is actively working on a business plan with her family to see how the addition of an on-farm processing plant and retail store would affect their operation. She also looks forward to the final year of her degree as the President of College Royal and is excited to lead an executive team of over 100 people to a successful 14-day event for its 100th anniversary.

Samantha Hildbrand – Fulfilling Dreams

TAKING A SHOWSTRING TO A HOLSTEIN SHOW BY YOURSELF TAKES A LOT OF WORK AND DETERMINATION. BUT THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT 20-YEAR-OLD SAMANTHA HILDBRAND OF ST. ALBERT, ON, DID THIS YEAR, FULFILLING A DREAM TO HAVE HER OWN STRING OF HOMEBRED ANIMALS AT THE SHOWS FROM HER FAMILY’S ROSENHILL FARM INC. HERD.

Samantha’s passion for showing and breeding Holsteins began early. Her parents, André and Judith Hildbrand, grew up on small dairy farms in Switzerland and met in Canada. Samantha’s father and grandparents bought their Eastern Ontario farm in 1997 after immigrating to Canada. The family started with 80 cows and were milking 90 in their tie-stall barn before the transition. In 2017, André and Judith built a new free-stall barn and put in three A4 Lely robots on their now 700-acre (650 workable) farm. Today the Hildbrands milk 135 cows with the herd averaging 42 litres/cow/day with 4.2% fat and having a classification breakdown of 9 ME, 8 EX, 67 VG and 45 GP. The Rosenhill herd has ranked among Canada’s best managed herds by Lactanet for many years and was Canada’s Top Managed Robot Herd in 2020 and 2021 and Ontario’s Best Managed Herd in 2020.

The third of four children, Samantha has always been involved on the farm helping with chores, feeding calves, etc. “Our entire family loves Red & White Holsteins,” she remarks. “A third of our herd is R&W and most of the rest Red Carrier. Three-fourths of our calves in the calf barn are R&W. Thirty percent of our herd traces to a cow my Dad bought in 2001, Granduc Frosty VG-87 7*, a granddaughter of Cloverlands Skylar Cherry-Red VG-87-DOM 12*.”

Samantha caught the “show bug” at a young age. “I can remember training my pony as if it was my 4-H calf when my sisters were training their 4-H animals,” she recalls. “I joined 4-H as soon as I could and loved doing everything myself. I have been fitting my 4-H animals for as long as I can remember. This is my 11th year in 4-H. The 4-H Dairy Club has fueled my love for cows. I don’t know where I would be if my parents never decided to involve me and my siblings in 4-H.”

She continues. “My passion for cows has just gotten bigger as the years of showing cattle has gone on and I have learned to organize everything to go to a show by myself. I have always wanted to have my own string of homebred animals at the shows.” Samantha’s strong work ethic, tenacity and stubbornness to get what she wants, even when people tell her no, enabled her to realize her dream this year. In June, Samantha took six heifers to the Maxville Holstein Show, two Black & White and four R&W, and all but one homebred. She chose, cared, trained, clipped and prepared each one for the showring.

“My 4-H heifer, Rosenhill Brayden Cali Red, was Champion R&W. She is out of an EX Lucky PP-Red dam that goes back to Yursden Kite Caramac-Red EX-92-USA 5*, 2006 All-American and World Dairy Expo R&W Grand Champion. We also won the R&W Junior Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners,” she smiles. “For the rest of the year, I took the four R&W animals to shows in the area with good results including first Junior Breeder’s Herd and Junior Premier Breeder at the Eastern Ontario Invitational Show in Spencerville, and then second Junior Breeder’s Herd at Navan Holstein Show and Carleton/Russell County Show.” In October, Samantha took three R&W heifers to the Eastern Ontario/Western Quebec Championship Show in Metcalfe where she was pleased with her placings in this large, competitive show. “I put a lot of work into taking care of these heifers and getting them ready for the shows,” she says. “I am very proud of how these heifers developed this year.

The results were much better than I could have ever imagined. The hard work definitely paid off, but I could not have done it without the help of friends to show some of the heifers or help get them ready when I was busy in the ring.”

Samantha is a talented showperson as well. In 2022, she was Champion Showperson at the Eastern Ontario/Western Quebec 4-H Championship Show with her calf Rosenhill Picasso Ceaser. This year has been even more memorable with Samantha winning Champion Showperson and Overall Champion at the EastGen Showcase, Champion Showperson at Maxville, and first Senior Showperson at the Summer Spotlight Junior Dairy Show with Rosenhill Brayden Cali. “What I like about showmanship is that even if you don’t have the nicest heifer you can still work and train your heifer as much as you can and do good in showmanship,” she adds.

This year Samantha will be making her fourth trip to the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in November. “I always enjoy going to the Classic for the experience and then seeing the other competitions apart from the Classic like the horse, beef, goat and sheep shows,” she says. “Last year, we sold 7 our first homebred R&W heifer at the Royal, Rosenhill Illustrator Cleo, to Vector Genetics. I also worked with Pierre Boulet’s Pierstein showstring at the Royal. This year I plan to show my three homebred Heidi von Ah, St. Albert. “I learned a lot there and gained more R&W heifers at the Royal’s open show.” confidence in doing fieldwork as well,” she notes. CONNOR VELTHUIS OSGOODE, ON Connor grew up on his family farm, Velthuis Farms, where he was constantly involved in the daily operations. He is now studying towards his diploma in Farm Management and Technology (FMT) at the Macdonald Campus of McGill near Montreal. Connor is heavily involved in his school community, acting as President of the FMT Class of 2024, where he is the voice of the student body, the fundraising event organizer, and the FMT student representative on the Campus’ Student Society. In April 2023, Connor was a member of the FMT team that participated in the Dairy Challenge Academy in Saratoga Springs, New York. Connor is looking forward to returning to the family farm after graduation, where he wants to focus on animal nutrition and crop management.

DANI KARN WOODSTOCK, ON Dani is currently in her 2nd year at the University of Guelph, working towards her Bachelor of Commerce degree in Food and Agricultural Business. Dani is the 6th generation on her family’s dairy and cash crop farm, Karnvilla Holsteins and Jerseys. In 2017, Dani purchased her first jersey calf, later registering her own prefix, Karnelle Jerseys, in 2020. To date, she has grown the herd from 1 to 12 animals. In addition to her numerous achievements within 4-H, Dani was also selected as Team Pitcher on the U19 Women’s Softball team at the Canada Summer Games in 2022. After university, she plans to continue as an Oxford dairy producer, focusing on breeding cows for production and type.

JULIA DEKLEIN MOSSLEY, ON Julia is currently enrolled in her 4th year of Sport Psychology at Laurentian University in Sudbury, ON. Growing up on the farm, her key responsibilities were cropland preparation, facility maintenance, and dairy heifer care.

She has always been actively involved in Middlesex County 4-H, her community, and her school. At university, Julia is a member of the varsity curling team and has had the opportunity to compete at a national level. She was honoured to receive the Coach’s Award in 2022 and 2023. Upon completion of her degree, Julia hopes to continue her studies at the University of Ottawa for a Master of Human Kinetics – Concentration in Intervention and Consultation.

MEGAN ATKINSON WOODSTOCK, ON Megan is enrolled in her 2nd year at the University of Guelph, studying towards her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a Major in Animal Science. Although she wasn’t raised on a farm, it was her initial participation in Oxford County 4-H that piqued her interest in agriculture and the dairy industry. After borrowing calves from Karnview Farms for the first few years, Megan was excited to purchase her first calf with them in 2020. It was then that she registered her own prefix – At-Holme Holsteins. This year, Megan is looking forward to acting as the OAC Class of 2026 Representative for the Dairy Science Club, as well as working with her peers to rebuild the U of G Judging Club. In the future, she plans to complete a Masters in Ruminant Nutrition, followed by obtaining a career in dairy nutrition.

NICOLE DANEN TAVISTOCK, ON Nicole is entering her 2nd year in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program at the University of Guelph. In addition to working on the family farm, she has enjoyed working at B-W Feed & Supply, where she has had the opportunity to learn more about the feed industry and create lasting relationships with local farmers. Nicole is no stranger to being involved in her community, which shows through her active participation in Oxford County 4-H and her role as Social Media and Newsletter Representative on the Oxford Junior Farmers Executive. During the upcoming school year, she is excited to be the Female Sports Representative for her class and looks forward to being involved in the rebuild of the U of G Judging Club. Nicole’s ultimate goal for the future is to return to the family farm after a few years of experience in different aspects of the agriculture industry.

ROBERT GOODWILL OWEN SOUND, ON After pursuing a comprehensive study of business management at Toronto Metropolitan University for two years, Robert’s desire to be closer to his family’s dairy motivated him to enroll in the business program at Georgian College in Barrie. On the farm, Robert has many responsibilities, some of which include milking, calf care and medication administration. Recently, Robert has become a shareholder in the GayLea Foods Cooperative, and hopes to one day become a member on the board. He is very proud of his community and enjoys actively contributing through his involvement in 4-H, where he can typically be found mentoring younger members. Upon completion of his studies, Robert aspires to work alongside his family and eventually take over operations at the farm.

SAMANTHA HILDBRAND ST-ALBERT, ON Samantha is entering her 3rd year in Farm Management Technology at the Macdonald Campus of McGill near Montreal. On the family farm, Rosenhill Holsteins, Samantha’s focus is selecting bulls that suit the breeding program and introducing new genetics to the herd. She enjoys being involved in Russell County 4-H, and in addition to her achievements within the association, Samantha was selected as one of the Holstein Canada Young Leader Education Award winners for 2022. In the future, her goal is to co-manage the family farm with her younger brother and continue to pursue genetics that will improve production and conformation within their herd.

LAUREN HOONAARD EXETER, ON Lauren is enrolled in her 3rd year at the University of Guelph in the Bachelor of Commerce program, majoring in Food and Agricultural Business. Lauren grew up working on her family’s dairy farm in Exeter but work with a local greenhouse, Hensall Co-operative, and BASF has proven very interesting. At university, Lauren has served as the Secretary for the OAC Class of 2025 Executive as well as the Registration and Social Media Director for the annual OAC Leadership Conference. This year, she looks forward to taking on the role of Communications Director for the Student Federation of the OAC. After completion of her undergraduate degree, Lauren hopes to work in agronomy, field crop sales or vegetable production. She also plans to take over the farm’s book work and potentially manage the cropping operations.

2023 INTER-COUNTY DAIRY INTER-COUNTY JUDGING COMPETITION RETURNS!

A

An amazing day was had at the 31st Inter-County Dairy Youth Judging Competition held on July 19th, 2023 at the Paris Fairgrounds.

After a three-year hiatus, the competition returned with some updates and new features - the competition was open to all youth ages 9-21, Novice and Junior categories followed a workshop-style educational format to encourage learning and skill building, and a Premier County trophy was introduced in honour of Bert Stewart who was the founder of this event and longtime supporter of this youth competition.

The objectives of the program are to develop decision-making and communication skills; to teach participants how to evaluate dairy cattle; to provide competition beyond the local level and to develop future judges. Skills learned at youth programs such as this empower them to become leaders of tomorrow.

A new committee of volunteers worked hard to get everything organized under the guidance of longtime supporter Murray Reissner. Holstein Ontario would like to thank all of the committee members for taking on the challenge of resurrecting the competition and making it such a great success.

Participants judged and gave reasons for both milking cow and heifer classes, including Holstein, Jersey, Guernsey, Milking Shorthorn and Ayrshires. There was also a quiz covering the manual On with the Show. The top 4 senior participants represented Ontario by competing at the US National 4-H Judging Competition in early October at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.

Congratulations to all participants for your enthusiasm and willingness to try something new. For many, it was their first time at this event and we hope to see them all back again next year. Stay tuned for a date and location for the 2024 event.

2023 COMPETITION GUIDELINES This competition is effective for the 2023 Show Season and is open for members of Ontario exclusively. Animal must be a Registered Holstein, 75% purity or higher.

To be eligible, animals must achieve at minimal one (1) of the qualifying show placings (as outlined below) while owned by or in partnership with an Ontario member. Qualifying show placings include the following: • First (1) or second (2) prize at an Ontario County Show, OR • Top five (5) at an Ontario Regional Show, including Ontario Spring Discovery, Maxville Holstein Show, Ontario Summer Show, EOWQ Championship Show, and Autumn Opportunity, OR • Top eight (8) Ontario-owned placings at the 2023 National Black & White Holstein Show or Red & White Holstein Show at the Royal Winter Fair.

Only one entry for Junior Breeder’s Herd per exhibitor. Multiple entries per exhibitor may be submitted for Breeder’s Herd, but each herd must be comprised of three (3) separate animals and must qualify separately as per the requirements above.

In the Breeder’s Herd and Junior Herd classes, only one substitute will be allowed per herd.

Senior animals (cow classes) must qualify while in milking form, including Milking Yearlings, and only show placings while in milking form will be considered relevant.

Summer calves may qualify via a Junior Calf Class, but only if a Summer Calf Class is not available at the qualifying show. Production cows may qualify via a Mature Cow Class, but only if a Production Class is not available AND Production Qualifications of 70,000 KGs are met at the qualifying show. *Placings at shows outside of Ontario must be provided, but are not considered qualifying shows.

Only results from valid show classes, as recognized by Holstein Canada, will be eligible to be included.

RED & WHITE CLASSES

• Animal must have been shown at any recognized Branch Holstein show to qualify for entry.

4-H CLASSES

• You must be a member of a 4-H Dairy Calf Club.

• You must have shown your project at your club achievement day, or in situations where a non-show achievement day took place, you completed all requirements for your 4-H club.

• Entry form must show calf’s actual placing in the class, as well as 4-H placing in the class.

• 4-H Members must lead their own calf in at least two (2) Holstein Ontario recognized shows but the animal need only qualify in one (1) show to be eligible: • Calf placed 1st or 2nd 4-H Calf (in its class) at a Holstein Ontario County Show.

• Calf placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd 4-H Calf at Ontario Spring Discovery, Maxville Holstein Show, Ontario Summer Show, EOWQ Championship Show, Autumn Opportunity Show or an Official 4-H Show with 75 or more 4-H members participating in the show. ENTRIES

Owners must submit an official entry via Assist Expo for each animal they wish to enter. Go to https://www.assistexpo.ca/all-ontario-holstein-competition to enter by November 20, 2023. Note: Each entry for each class requires a photo (see photo requirements below). A fee of $50 per entry ($25 for 4-H) applies and can be used towards a 2024 ad in The Link. PHOTO REQUIREMENTS

Your entry must be accompanied by a professionally-taken 5x7 side-shot photo taken in the current show season. Photos must show the stage of lactation the cow was in when she competed. A Senior Yearling may be entered in both the milking & non-milking class but a picture must be provided in both milking and non-milking form. Exhibitors must submit three (3) individual pictures of the members of your Breeder’s Herd and Junior Breeder’s Herd. Group shots will not be accepted.

Digitally manipulated photos will not be accepted.

SELECTION

All qualifying entries received by the deadline will be submitted to a panel of 18 judges who will place their top six in each category. Points will be assigned as follows: 1st (9 points), 2nd (6 points), 3rd (4 points), 4th (3 points), 5th (2 points), and 6th (1 point). Judges who bred or owned the animal at any point in it’s lifetime will be blocked from judging that animal in the competition. Additionally, 12 randomly-selected voting results will be compiled from the 18 sets of results to determine the All-Ontario winner for each class. Top placing animals will be recognized as All-Ontario, Reserve All-Ontario, and Honourable Mention All-Ontario respectively, followed by 3 nominated animals (4 in the case of a tie). Prior to voting, an effort will be made to allow each entrant 24 hours to review the accuracy of their entry via a live link, as well as view others in the class.

Entrants will be notified of the final results via email. Results will be published in the Winter 2024 issue of The Link Magazine. Presentation of awards will be made at the Holstein Ontario AGM and Convention in February. Results will not be considered official and cannot be published by any other company until after presentations are made.
