깊은 물 속의 두 친구 A Tale of Two Underwater Friends

아주 먼 옛날, 라오스에는 아름다운 빛깔의 물이 가득한 커다란 호수가 있었어요. 태양빛이 반짝이는 호수는 푸른 상록수 나무숲으로 둘러싸여 있었고, 신비한 식물과 동물이 함께 사는 아름다운 곳이었어요.

Once upon a time in Laos, there was a humongous lake filled with water of many different colors.

This sunlight-gleaming lake was surrounded by a dense forest of evergreen trees.

It was a beautiful place where many magical plants and creatures lived in harmony.

이 호수 밑바닥에는 ‘숫토’와 ‘수완’ 두 명의 용왕과 그들이 각각 이끄는 왕국이 있었어요. 둘은 서로를 도우며 사이좋게 지내는 좋은 친구였답니다.

At the bottom of the lake were two kingdoms, each led by a naga king.

The two naga kings, Suttho and Suwan, were very good friends.

어느 날, 숫토가 부하들과 함께 숲으로 사냥을 나가 코끼리를 한 마리 잡았어요.

One day, Suttho and his men went hunting in the woods and caught an elephant.

돌아와서는 잡은 고기의 반을 그의 친구 수완에게 나누어 주었지요. 수완은 선물을 받아 크게 기뻐하며 숫토에게 감사편지를 보냈어요.

Suttho divided the meat and gave half to his friend, Suwan.

Suwan was delighted and expressed his appreciation with a letter.

그 후 어느 봄날, 이번에는 수완이 병사들을 이끌고 사냥을 나가 고슴도치를 한 마리 잡았어요.

Then on one spring day, Suwan and his men went hunting and caught a porcupine.

수완 역시 고기를 동등하게 반으로 나누고, 아름답다고 생각한 고슴도치 털과 함께 숫토에게 보냈어요.

Suwan, too, divided the meat exactly in half and sent it to his friend, together with spines of the animal, which he had found beautiful.

“아니, 이렇게 길고 두꺼운 털이라면 세상에서 가장 큰 동물을 잡은 것이 틀림없는데, 어째서 고기는 이렇게 조금만 보낸단 말인가!” 숫토는 크게 화를 내며 선물을 돌려보냈어요.

“With spines as long and thick as these, Suwan clearly caught the biggest animal in the world, but only this much meat?

How could he possibly do this to me?”

Suttho was outraged and sent the gift back.

수완은 크게 당황했어요. “나의 친구 숫토는 왜 그렇게 화가 난 걸까? 고기를 공평하게 나누어 마음을 담아 선물했건만……”

Suwan was confused.

“What could have upset him so? Though a small amount, I divided up the meat fair and square and dedicated it to him with sincerity…”

다음 날 아침, 수완은 부하들을 이끌고 숫토를 만나러 갔어요. 숫토는 여전히 화가 나있었고 냉정하게 말을 꺼냈어요.

The next morning, Suwan paid a visit to Suttho.

Suttho was still angry and spoke with asperity,

“수완, 나는 우리가 진정한 친구라고 생각했네만, 자네는 아니었나 보오.” “친구여, 절대 그렇지 않네. 나는 자네를 신뢰하고 사랑하네. 맹세할 수 있어.”

“Suwan, I always thought we were true friends, but I guess you don’t feel the same way.”

“My dear friend, that’s certainly not true. I love you with all my heart and trust you absolutely.”

하지만 수완의 말은 숫토를 더욱 분노하게 했어요. “나는 내가 코끼리를 잡았을 때, 자네에게 똑같이 반을 나누어 주었네. 헌데 자네는 어찌하였는가? 코끼리보다 훨씬 큰 동물을 잡았음에도 겨우 손바닥만큼의 양만 보내지 않았는가?”

However, Suwan’s words angered Suttho even more.

“When I caught an elephant, I gave you an equal share.

But you? Even though you caught an animal much larger than an elephant, you sent me only a palm size portion of the meat!”

그때, 수완은 문제가 무엇인지 깨달았어요. “내 말을 들어보게나, 친구. 자네는 고슴도치를 본 적이 없는 듯하오. 동물의 크기는 털의 길이나 두께로 판단이 불가능하네. 코끼리는 몸집이 크지만 털이 매우 짧고 얇지 않은가. 고슴도치라는 동물은 털이 코끼리보다 훨씬 길고 두껍기는 하나, 몸집은 겨우 오리와 비슷하다네.” 하지만 아무리 설명하려 해도 고슴도치를 본 적이 없는 숫토는 믿지 않았고 수완은 오해를 풀지 못한 채 자신의 궁으로 돌아왔어요.

That moment, Suwan realized the problem.

“My dear friend, please listen to me. I don’t think that you’ve ever seen a porcupine.

The size of an animal cannot be determined by the length or thickness of its hair.

Although an elephant is huge in size, its hair is quite short and thin.

A porcupine’s spine is much longer and thicker than the hair of an elephant, yet the size of its body is just similar to a duck.”

But no matter how hard Suwan tried to explain, Suttho did not believe him.

Suwan had to return to his kingdom, leaving the misunderstanding unresolved.

며칠이 지나도록 화를 참지 못한 숫토는 군대를 이끌고 물을 휘저으며 수완의 왕국을 공격했어요. 수완은 맞서 싸웠고 순식간에 큰 혼란이 일어났어요. 호수는 진흙투성이가 되었고 주변 숲도 흐리고 흐려졌어요.

Days had passed, but Suttho was unable to boil his anger away.

Finally, he led his army and attacked Suwan’s kingdom.

Suwan fought back, and soon there was chaos.

The lake became a swirling vortex of mud, and the forest was barely visible.

전쟁은 오랫동안 계속되었어요. 크고 작은 모든 동물들은 두려움에 떨었고, 태양과 달은 더 이상 보이지 않게 되었어요.

The war continued for a long time. Animals, both big and small, trembled with fear, and the Sun and Moon were no longer to be seen.

보다 못한 신들의 왕이 중재에 나섰어요. 숫토와 수완을 위협할 초자연적인 힘으로 주문을 걸어 싸움을 멈추게 하였지요.

Unable to bear the sight any longer, the king of the gods jumped in.

He cast a spell with supernatural powers to stop the fighting between the two friends.

또한, 혼란을 일으킨 벌로 두 개의 강을 만들어 따로 살 것을 명령했어요. 명령에 따라 숫토는 동남쪽 방향으로 메콩강을 만들고, 수완은 서남쪽 방향으로 난강을 만들어 멀찍이 떨어졌답니다.

The god punished them for their deeds, ordering them to build two rivers from the lake and live separately.

Suttho was responsible for making the Mekong River in the southeast direction while Suwan was to build the Nan River in the southwest direction.

이후 두 용왕은 화해를 하고 다시 친구가 되었지만, 두 강에 흐르는 물은 처음 생겨나게 된 전쟁을 아직 잊지 않고 있다고 해요. 그래서 지금까지 라오스에서는 메콩강과 난강의 물을 함께 담아 섞이게 하면 그릇에 금이 가거나 깨져버린다는 이야기가 전해지고 있답니다.

Though the two naga kings became friends again, the waters of the two rivers have not forgotten the war that led to their creation. In fact, the Lao people say that the water from the Mekong and Nan rivers cannot mix in the same vessel, for it will crack or even burst.
