아세안문화원의 2019년 사진 및 영상 공모전 “한국 속의 아세안, 아세안 속의 한 국”의 성공적인 개최와 우수작 전시 <공감하는 시선>의 개막을 매우 기쁘게 생각 합니다. 올해는 1989년 한국과 아세안이 대화관계를 수립한 지 30년이 되는 해이

기에, 한국과 아세안의 활발한 교류의 현장을 담아내는 이번 공모전이 더욱 의미 깊게 다가옵니다.

한국국제교류재단은 1991년 창립 이래 다양한 분야의 교류 사업을 통해 한국과 아세안의 유대를 강화해 오고 있습니다. 특히, 2017년부터는 한-아세안 쌍방향 문

화·학술·인적 교류 플랫폼인 아세안문화원을 운영해오며 한국과 아세안의 협력 증진을 위해 노력하고 있습니다. 이번 공모전 역시 ‘다 함께 잘사는 혁신적 포용국 가’라는 우리 정부의 국정 비전 아래 최고의 파트너 국가로 지목된 아세안과 우리 국 민의 상호이해를 강화하기 위한 기획 사업으로 추진되었습니다.

세계에서 가장 젊고 역동적인 공동체인 아세안의 청년들은 K-pop으로 대표되는 한국의 대중문화를 즐기고 있으며, 최근 한국을 방문하는 동남아 출신의 여행객도

점차 증가하는 추세입니다. 우리 국민 역시 아름다운 자연환경과 우수한 문화유산,

다양한 식문화를 지닌 아세안을 단골 여행지로 삼아 꾸준히 방문하고 있습니다. 이 렇게 문화적으로 친밀해질수록 한국과 아세안은 이웃을 넘어 친구가 되고, 더욱 견 고한 협력 관계를 구축해갈 수 있으리라 믿습니다.

다양한 민족, 종교, 이념이 조화롭게 공존하는 아세안 국가들의 포용성과 개방성

은 21세기 세계화 시대를 살아가는 우리 모두가 배워야 할 소중한 가치입니다. 이 번 전시에 소개할 우수작 사진과 영상에서도 이러한 조화, 관용, 소통의 모습들이 잘 드러납니다.

Foreword

I am thrilled to celebrate the successful hosting of the photo and video contest â&#x20AC;&#x153;ASEAN in Korea, Korea in ASEANâ&#x20AC;? and the opening of the special exhibition ASEAN Gaze, which features the awardwinning works of the forenamed contest. What makes this exhibition even more meaningful is that it depicts vivid scenes of cultural exchanges between ASEAN and Korea in celebration of the 30th anniversary of official dialogue.

Ever since its founding in 1991, the Korea Foundation (KF) has contributed to enhancing mutual understanding between Korea and ASEAN through public diplomacy projects in various fields. The KF has strived particularly earnest to promote closer cooperation between ASEAN and Korea through the operation of ASEAN Culture House (ACH), which has served as an interactive platform for exchanges between ASEAN and Korea since its establishment in September 2017.

Young people in ASEAN, the youngest and most dynamic global community, enjoy Korean popular culture in the form of K-pop: visitors to Korea from Southeast Asian countries has increased continuously in recent years. Similarly, Korean visitors frequent

ASEAN regions for their beautiful landscapes, superb cultural heritages, and diverse culinary cultures. I am certain that the culturally closer we become, ASEAN and Korea can be friends in the truest sense, and our relationship can grow even more firmly intertwined.

The capacity and openness of the ASEAN countries, each of which are characterized by a harmonious coexistence of various ethnic groups, religions, and political ideologies, are the most precious virtues that we must all learn amidst an ever-globalized 21st-century society.

The award-winning photos and videos featured at the exhibition, as you will soon see, clearly show us everyday examples of harmony, tolerance, and communication.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to those who sent submissions to the contest from all over the world as well as those who worked tirelessly for the success of the contest and this exhibition. I hope that this small but significant endeavor can help maintain the beautiful friendship of ASEAN and Korea that is based on profound mutual understanding and trust.

전시개요

아세안문화원은 2019년 한-아세안 대화관계 수립 30주년을 기념해 사진 및 영상

공모전 “한국 속의 아세안, 아세안 속의 한국”을 개최했습니다. 동명의 사진 공모 전이 작년 5월 최초로 진행된 바 있으며, 이번 공모전은 그 두 번째 프로젝트로 기존 의 사진 부문에 영상 부문을 더해 보다 확대된 규모로 추진되었습니다.

그 결과 총 41일의 공모기간(2019.1.28~3.10) 동안 전 세계의 참여자들로부터 853점의 사진과 75편의 영상이 접수되었습니다. 특히 올해 공모전에는 우리 국민

들뿐만 아니라 아세안 각국 국민들의 참여도 대폭 증가해 한국과 아세안의 쌍방향 교류라는 공모전 취지를 충실히 뒷받침하는 결과를 얻을 수 있었습니다.

모든 출품작들에는 한국과 아세안 각국의 일상과 여행에서 발견된 매력과 멋, 그리

고 다양한 상호교류의 현장이 생생히 담겨 있었습니다. 그 중 각계 전문가들의 면 밀한 심사를 통과한 사진과 영상 각 부문별 수상작은 총 12점이 선정되었으며, 이 번 우수작 전시 <공감하는 시선>에는 수상작과 특별상(입선)을 포함한 사진 78점, 영상 10편을 선보입니다.

선정된 작품들은 1 어린이 / 2 여성 / 3 일과 삶 / 4 여행과 소통이라는 네 가지 주

제로 분류되었으며, 각 전시에는 작품과 함께 제출된 참여자의 사진/영상 에세이

도 함께 소개됩니다. 각 영상과 사진들은 지리적으로 떨어져있고, 서로 다른 언어 를 쓰는 사람들 간에도 얼마든지 공감과 소통이 가능하다는 점을 보여줍니다. 긴

장과 대립이 아닌 상호존중과 신뢰가 담긴 사진과 영상 속 장면들을 통해 아름답 고 견고하게 구축되어 가고 있는 한국과 아세안의 관계를 확인해보시기 바랍니다.

Introduction

The ASEAN Culture House hosted a photo and video contest entitled “ASEAN in Korea, Korea in ASEAN” in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of dialogue relations between Korea and ASEAN. This contest was preceded by a photo contest of the same title that was held in May 2018: the former is an expanded version of the latter, with a video component added to the existing photo component.

A total of 853 photos and 75 videos were submitted by participants from around the world during the 41 days (January 28 ~ March 10, 2019) that the contest was held. This outpouring of submissions faithfully reflects the contest’s objects—bilateral exchange between Korea and ASEAN—and is also noteworthy for a sharp increase in submissions from both Koreans and ASEAN citizens.

All works featured in the exhibition vividly show the charm and beauty of daily life and travel in Korea and ASEAN countries as well as sites of diverse mutual exchange. A total of 12 works were selected to receive awards via detailed screening by experts in various fields. Sympathetic Gaze, the exhibition of award-winning works, features all 78 photos and 10 videos that received awards in this contest (including submission awards).

Selected works were classified into four categories: 1 Children / 2 Women / 3 Work and Life / 4 Travel and Communication. Each submitted work is accompanied by essays written by the creator. The videos and photographs show that profound interaction and communication is possible even among people who are separated geographically and use very different languages.

Through the filmed images, which embody respect for fellow man instead of tension or conflict, we hope that visitors can witness the beautiful and strong friendship that is being built up between Korea and ASEAN.

찬 모습입니다. 아이들과 어른들이 교환하는 시선 속에는 위계와 긴장이 아 닌 신뢰와 친근함이 담겨 있습니다. 낯선 사람들과도 편견 없이 친구가 되는 어린이들의 모습에서 한국과 아세안이 가꿔나갈 우정의 참된 모습을 발견할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Jeong-Hwan Bang, a key contributor to the establishment of Children’s Day in Korea, once said, “Children are people who are ‘newer’ than adults by one generation. Do not look down on their willpower.”

In order to ensure that children, who are the leaders of our future, may grow as well-rounded persons having healthy mind and body, Korea and 10 countries in ASEAN define the elementary education of children as compulsory and make international cooperative endeavors to provide as many educational opportunities as possible according to the capabilities of elementary-aged children. The children in these photos are cheerful and have expressive features. The “look” exchanged between children and adults does not contain hierarchy and tension but rather trust and friendliness. It is our hope that viewers can see the true friendship between Korea and ASEAN from the faces of the children, who are able to make friends with strangers without any prejudice.

Boarding the “ASEAN Train” All Together!

사진은 미얀마 바간지역의 ‘짜욱딴’이라는 마을을 방문했을 때 찍은 것 입니다. 휴대폰도, 컴퓨터도, 변변한 놀이터도 없는 짜욱딴 마을 아이들 에게 유일한 놀이는 바로 마을 공터에서 하는 기차놀이입니다. 앞 사람의 어깨에 손을 얹고 뛰어다니는 것만으로도 즐거워하는 아이들의 모습을 보며, 저 또한 어릴 적 놀이터에서 기차놀이를 하며 뛰어놀았던 추억이 떠올랐어요. 미얀마는 한국과 많은 것이 닮은 나라입니다. 서로의 어깨에 손을 올려 하나의 기차로 달려가는 아이들처럼, 한국과 미얀마의 관계 또한 ‘아세안’ 이라는 한 기차를 타고 밝은 미래로 ‘함께’ 나아갔으면 좋겠습니다.

This picture was taken when I visited the town of Kyauktan in Bagan, Myanmar. The only way for children to play in Kyauktan, which does not have mobile phones, PCs, or even a playground, is “Choo-Choo Train” at a vacant lot. Watching the children, who were happy just to have their hands on the shoulders of the child in front while running here and there, I was reminded of my own games of Choo-Choo Train as a child at the neighborhood playground. Myanmar is a country that is very similar to Korea. Like the children who move together as one train by putting their hands on each other’s shoulders, I hope the relationship between Korea and Myanmar moves forward toward a bright future together on the same train—ASEAN.

라오스 루앙프라방 몽족 마을에서 만난 아이들의 사진입니다. 몽족 Hmong people 은 중국의 소수민족 묘족과 같은 혈통으로 베트남, 라오스, 태국 등지에 흩어져 살아가는 민족입니다. 이런 몽족이 사는 마을에서 만난 소녀들은 낯선 사람인 저를 반기며 밝게 웃어주었습니다. 그리고는 손을 모으고 인사를 해주었는데요. 동방예의지국인 한국에 사는 내게 이런 인사는 뭔가 강한 환대의 기분을 느끼게 해주었습니다. 아이들의 인사 덕분에 라오스가 더욱 가깝게 다가왔습니다.

The Hmong people share a genetic connection with the Miao people, an ethnic minority of China that also is scattered throughout Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Girls at the Hmong town welcomed me, a stranger, with big smiles. They then gathered their hands in a traditional greeting gesture, which looked even more beautiful to someone who comes from “the country of courteous people in the East.” Thanks to these children, I gained a very personal experience of Laos.

캄보디아 초등학교에서 봉사활동 중 미술시간에 살고 싶은 집을 주제로 자유롭게 그림을 그리는 시간이 있었어요. 한 아이가 언젠가 본 적이 있었 는지 집 옆에 태극기를 그리고 있더라고요. 조금은 틀린 태극기였지만, 아이의 마음도 그림도 너무 아름다웠답니다.

During a volunteer activity at an elementary school in Cambodia, there was an art class in which children were asked to draw the house that they want to live in, with no restrictions on format. One boy was drawing a Korean flag next to the house, doing his best to recreate the former from memory. The shape was not technically correct, but his efforts and the result of such efforts are—as you can see—incredibly beautiful.

올해 초에 저는 2주 동안 베트남으로 해외봉사를 다녀왔습니다. 이 사진은 시골마을 ‘구찌’의 고아원에서 촬영한 것인데요. 문화교류 프로그램으로 한복 종이접기를 진행했습니다. 한복 종이접기를 하기 전에는 아이들과 교감하지 못할까봐, 커뮤니케이션이 되지 않을까봐 여러 가지로 많은 걱정을 했는데요. 하지만 제 걱정이 무색 하게도 아이들은 처음 본 제게 마음의 문을 열어주었고, 언어의 장벽은 별 거 아니라는 듯이 대화를 시도하였습니다. 곧 있으면 한국으로 돌아갈, 낯선 저에게 기꺼이 정서적 교감을 허락해 준 아이들의 대담한 용기에 진한 감동과 고마움을 느꼈습니다. 종이접기로 문화교류를 하며, 아세안 이라는 국가 공동체에 속한 사람 대 사람으로 아이들을 만나고 유대감을 나눌 수 있었습니다. 활짝 웃고 있는 아이들을 보며, 지속적인 봉사활동을 통해 많은 아세안 국가의 아이들과 사랑을 경험하며 살아가는 사람이 되겠다는 다짐을 하게 된 시간이었습니다.

Early this year, I volunteered overseas service in Vietnam for 2 weeks. This picture was taken at an orphanage in ‘Cu Chi’, a countryside village. As a kind of cultural e exchange program, I had them to make Hanbok by paperfolding. Before doing the paperfolding, I were so worried if I could not commune with the children and could not communicate with them. But, my worries were in vain and they opened their mind to me who was a stranger to them. They also tried to communicate with me like never thinking of any language barrier. I was touched by their courages by allowing me to have the , a stranger the emotional commune with pleasure. Also, I felt the thank to them. Exchanging the culture with these children by paperfolding, I could meet them as person-to-person affiliated to national community of ASEAN and could share the fellowship. Seeing the children with big smiles, I made a decision to become a person who experiences the love with children in ASEAN countries through continuous volunteer services.

무더운 여름날 캄보디아 봉사 중 아이들과 함께 비눗방울 놀이를 무지개 빛 색색가지의 비눗방울을 만들어 보고, 터뜨려도 보고, 그 속에 비친 친구들 모습도 봅니다. 아이들은 하나씩 나눠준 목걸이 비눗방울 놀잇감이 너무나 소중해서 아끼고 아껴 집에 가서 부모님께 보여주기도 합니다. 행여 흘리기라도 하면 그보다 슬플 일이 없을 것 같네요. 땀이 흐르는 줄도 모르고 같이 놀았던 그때, 아이들이 즐거워하던 모습이 그립습니다.

On a hot summer day while I was in Cambodia for volunteer work, I blew rainbow-colored bubbles for the children, who immensely enjoyed popping the bubbles, while I enjoyed watching them enjoy themselves.

The children loved the “necklace bubbles” that we gave them, proudly showed them to their parents. If they lose them, I think it would be the saddest thing in the world. I think often about that day, which was full of heat, sweat, and having fun.

미얀마에서 유치원 선생님으로 5개월 동안 봉사활동을 한 대학생입니다. “모밍 세야 모밍 선생님 ~!!”이라고 항상 소리치며 저를 졸래졸래 따라 다니던 한 아이가 있었습니다. 제가 다른 선생님들보다 더 잘 놀아주고 안아줘서인지 유치원 아이들이 많이 따르고 좋아했는데요. 일을 하러 걸어가는 길에 또 한 아이가 선생님을 부르며 멀리서부터 뛰어 왔어요. 저는 아이를 번쩍 들어 안아주었는데요. 그 모습이 사진으로 남았습니다. 선생님의 표정을 그대로 따라하는 아이. 서로를 좋아하는 만큼 표정도 똑같죠?

I am a university student who served as a kindergarten teacher in Myanmar for five months as part of an educational volunteer program. There was one girl who constantly trotted along after me, yelling, “Moming Seya~!! (Moming teacher)” Many of the other children seemed to like me as well, as I spent more time playing with them than most of the other teachers.

When I was walking to work, a child ran toward me while still a long way off, excitedly calling me. I hugged the child by lifting her up. That moment is captured by the above picture: a child copying the facial expression of the teacher. Perhaps the fact that our faces look the same is because we like one another?

캄보디아의 씨엠립에 위치한 정원 180명 정도의 작은 초등학교를 방문했습니다. 학생들에게 간단한 위생 교육을 하고, 동요나 별다른 놀이 문화가 없는 이곳 아이들에게 한국의 동요와 놀이 문화를 전파하는 등 봉사를 하기 위해서였죠. 거대한 소도 한 점으로 밖에 보이지 않는 넓은 대지. 하지만 아이들에게 허용된 공간은 학교의 작은 운동장뿐인 환경. 아이들은 이곳에서 낯선이의 방문을 신기한 눈으로 바라보며, 우리를 환영해주었습니다. 어색했던 시간도 잠시, 아이들은 금새 저희 일행과 하나가 되고, 저희가 준비한 놀이를 함께 하며 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다. 가장 행복한 아이들. 하루종일 지치지도 않고 줄넘기를 하며 놉니다.

We visited a small elementary school of 180 students located in Siem Leap, Cambodia.

The purpose of the visit was volunteer social work, such as basic hygiene education for students and teaching Korean children’s songs and recreational culture to students who mostly do not have access to these things.

The wideness of the land made even very large cattle look like dotted points. However, the only space allowed to the students is a small playground—an environment that does not meet their needs. The students regarded us strangers with curiosity and gave us a warm welcome.

They were shy at first, but they soon got along with the strange people from Korea and enjoyed the activities we prepared beforehand.

The students seemed to always be happy. They jumped rope all day without being tired.

The expressions on their faces while jump roping looked like those of angels.

사진은 우리나라에 거주하는 아세안국가 출신 다문화가족의 자녀들입니다. 모두 함께 스스럼없이 친구가 되어 놀이를 통해 우애를 다지는 모습이에요. 저는 이런 평화로운 모습을 통해 국적에 차별을 두지 않고 동등한 기회와 복지를 제공하는 우리나라의 다문화적 포용성을 표현 하고 싶었습니다. 또한 우리나라가 아세안 국가 간의 교류에 앞장서는 모습을 사진으로 홍보하며, 아세안을 보다 폭넓은 시각에서 바라보게 하고 싶었어요.

The above picture shows the children of ASEAN multicultural families that reside in Korea. They promote their friendship through play, as children do throughout the world.

I would like to think that this photo shows Korea’s willingness to embrace cultures other than its own and provide equal opportunities and welfare without discrimination of nationality. Also, I would like to show through this picture that Korea is a leader of international exchange among ASEAN countries and that ASEAN has various member countries, some of which we know very little about.

맹그로브 나무는 아열대나 열대 해변의 습지에서 자라는 나무로 동남아시아, 남태평양, 호주, 인도 근해, 아프리카, 아메리카에 분포하고 있습니다. 맹그로브 숲은 열대우림보다 5배 많은 탄소 저장고로 이들의 서식지가 파괴되면, 지구 환경 또한 파괴될 수밖에 없습니다. 따라서 세계 곳곳에서 맹그로브숲 조성 사업이 펼쳐지고 있습니다. 작년, 사진 봉사원으로 함께한 ‘맹그로브 조성 사업’은 베트남 시골에 있는 작은 도시 짜빈성에서 진행 되었습니다. 맹그로브 숲 조성 일정 외에도 베트남 짜빈성에 있는 작은 초등학교에 방문하는 일정이 있었는데요. 사진은 봉사자들이 한국에서부터 준비해 간 작은 선물을 받고 기쁨을 표현하는 아이들의 모습입니다.

Mangrove trees are found throughout Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, Australia, offshore India, Africa, and the Americas in wetlands in subtropical/tropical beaches.

Mangrove forests are a type of reservoir that contains five times more carbon than tropical rain forests. If such a habitat is destroyed, the Earth’s environment would also collapse. This is why projects to revive mangroves are taking place throughout the world today. The “Mangrove Forest Creating Project,” which I joined as a volunteer photographer last year, was developed in Tra Vihn Province, a small city in a countryside of Vietnam. In addition to the itinerary for planting mangrove forests, we visited a small elementary school in Tra Vihn Province. The above picture shows children who are overjoyed to receive small gifts prepared by the volunteers in Korea.

캄보디아 수도에서 자가용으로 2 시간 정도 떨어진 곳에 위치한, 제가 2 년 동안 근무했던 따께오주의 한 초등학교입니다. 캄보디아의 초등학교 정규 수업에는 예체능 수업이 없어서 아이들은 미술, 음악, 체육 수업을 받아본 적이 없습니다. 그래서 저는 보건교사였지만, 여러 책자와 인터넷의 도움을 받아 어설프 지만 예체능 수업을 하기 시작했습니다. 그중에서도 아이들이 가장 좋아 하던 수업은 미술 수업이었어요. 아이들이 너무 신나해서 진행하기가 정말 힘들었지만, 수업을 하고 나면 보람도 그만큼 컸답니다. 수수깡 하나와 색종이 한 장이면 만들 수 있는 작은 작품이지만, 바람개비를 들고 여기 저기 뛰어다니는 아이들의 모습을 보니 그 이상의 가치가 있었습니다. 나중에 시간이 흐르면 아이들은 이 기억을 잊어가겠지만, 언젠가 문득 ‘우리들과 잘 놀아주던 한국인 선생님’을 떠올리며 저를 기억해주었으면 좋겠어요.

This is an elementary school in Ta Keo, which is located a two hours’ drive from the capital of Cambodia by car. I worked at this school for two years. Most elementary schools in Cambodia do not have art, music, or physical education classes: the students at this school were no exception.

I was hired to be the school nurse, but I began to teach art, music, and physical education with the help of various books and the Internet for the benefit of the students. Their most favorite class by far was art. It was no easy task to teach subjects I was not professionally train in. But after these classes, I think it was myself rather than the students who felt the most satisfaction. “Pinwheel” was a very simple art class project made with one cellophane straw and one sheet of colored paper. While watching the students run around with their pinwheels, however, I realized that it was more to them than that.

Later, after time passes, they will forget this day. But I hope someday they may perhaps suddenly remember the “Korean teacher who played with us.”

필리핀 클락에 있는 마르코스 빌리지에서 한 아이와 만국 어린이의 공통 언어, 빠또, 빠또, 삐! 가위,바위,보 를 하며 놀았습니다. 그 외에 재미있는 놀이들을 하며 아이들과 더 가까워질 수 있었어요. 비록 자라온 지역과 환경은 다르지만 우리는 한마음으로 재미있게 놀면서 서로 친해질 수 있었습니다. 필리핀 아이들의 순수한 미소를 보니 마음이 따뜻해졌습니다. 우리가 그들의 문화도 알아가고 서로 교감할 수 있음에 매우 기쁩니다.

In Marcos village, Clark, the Philippines, we played 빠또, 빠또, 삐! (Rock, Scissors, Paper),

a common play for the global children with one child. We could be more closer with children by doing some fun plays. Though we have experienced different region and environment, we could play fun and get along with these children.

We felt so good when seeing the pure smiles of Filipino children. It was so happy for us to get to know their culture and to share our feeling with them.

필리핀 클락에 있는 마르코스 빌리지, 필리핀 아이들이 한국의 전통 놀이인 딱지치기를 하고 있습니다. 세 명의 필리핀 아이들이 동시에 딱지를 치고 있는 모습이에요. 쉬운 규칙으로 필리핀 아이들이 쉽게 참여할 수 있었고, 직접 딱지를 만들어보는 시간도 있어서 서로 교제하는 즐거운 시간이었 습니다. 아이들은 어느새 딱지치기에 빠져 승부욕에 불타더군요. 나중에는 우리의 도움 없이 서로 게임을 하며 우리나라 문화에 자연스럽게 스며들었습니다.

Marcos village in Clark, the Philippines. The above picture shows Filipino children who were playing Ddakjichigi, a Korean traditional play. You can see three Filipino children play this game at the same time in the above picture.

The play has very simple rules and so, those children could easily joined this play. They also had the time to make Ddakji by themselves and spent pleasant time for each other.

Children liked this play so much and got to have very strong competitive spirits. Later, they played this game without our help and accepted Korean culture naturally accordingly.

저는 미얀마 양곤에 있는 흘라잉따야지역 공립유치원에서 교육봉사를 했습니다. 어느 미술 수업시간에 아이들과 함께 자신의 한글 이름이 적힌 이름표를 꾸며보는 수업을 했는데요. 아이들은 이름표 꾸미기 수업에 매우 큰 흥미를 보이며, 색연필 등으로 이름표를 꾸미는 데 열심이었답니다. 사진 속 아이의 얼굴에 발라져 있는 것은 ‘따나카’라고 불리는 미얀마의 전통 화장품인데요. 덥고 습한 미얀마에서 피부를 보호하기 위해 바르는 것이에요. 따나카를 바르면 피부가 시원해지는 느낌을 받는답니다.

I participated in an educational volunteer project at a public kindergarten in the Hlaing Thar Yar region of Yangon, Myanmar. One day in art class, I made the students decorate their name cards with their Korean names. They showed great interest in the decoration assignment and proceeded to decorate their name cards with color pencils, even if it was not easy! The colored markings on the child’s face in the above photo is a type of traditional cosmetics in Myanmar called “thanaka.” The purpose of thanaka is to protect the skin from the hot and wet weather of Myanmar.

When applying thanaka, you can feel your skin instantly cool down.

사진은 인도네시아 발리의 뭉구 마을에서 인도네시아의 전통 악기인 가믈란을 연주하는 어린 소년을 바라보는 모습입니다. 발리에서는 마을 내에서 빈번하게 열리는 제사를 위해 전문 음악가뿐만 아니라 이렇게 어린 나이의 아이들도 마을 회관에 와서 전통 악기를 자연스럽게 접하고 연주한다고 합니다. 한국에서 전통음악을 음악전문학교에서만 전공해 온 저에게 이 발리 소년의 가믈란 연주는 전통 음악의 본질에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 계기가 되었습니다. 무대를 위한 전통음악이 아닌 일상에서 즐길 수 있는 전통음악이 한국에서도 자리 잡을 수 있길 바라봅니다.

The above picture shows a boy playing the gamelan, a traditional Indonesian instrument, at Munggu Village in Bali, Indonesia. In Bali, children as well as professional musicians play their traditional instruments for the ancestral rites frequently held in the village.

Having majored in traditional Korean music in Korea, seeing this Balinese boy playing the gamelan was an opportunity to think about the nature of traditional music in general.

I hope that traditional Korean music can become an integral part of everyday life in Korea as well as something that is performed on a stage.

In ASEAN countries, the social status of women is relatively high, with low levels of sexual discrimination. In such societies, women are active in the workplace while also having equal decision-making rights in the home as men. This results in the creation of an equal relationship between men and women. In particular, many Southeast Asian countries have vibrant communities of ethnic minorities that each have a unique traditional culture, many of which are matriarchal.

The photos in this exhibition show the power of female enterprisers in ASEAN countries and as well as the physical and inner beauty of Korean women. These works show the hope of women in Korea and ASEAN countries in the 21st century and their ability to support one other’s lives through active exchanges and solidarity.

사진은 강원도 화천에서 열리는 ‘산천어 축제’의 외국인 전용 낚시터에서 인도네시아 여성 3명이 산천어를 잡고 환호하는 모습입니다. 산천어 축제는 우리나라의 대표적인 겨울 축제로 외국인들도 많이 참여하고 있는데요. 추운 날씨에도 산천어를 잡는 재미에 푹 빠져 즐기는 모습이 너무 즐거워 보였습니다. 저는 축제에서 만난 그들의 행복한 순간을 오래 남기고 싶었어요. 사진 촬영 허가를 받고 찍은 사진을 메일로 보내 주었더니, 좋은 추억을 남겨줘서 고맙다는 인사도 받았네요. 인도네시아는 더운 나라이다보니 얼음을 깨서 낚시를 하는 ‘얼음낚시’가 인상적이라고 하더라고요.

This photo shows three Indonesian women shouting with joy after catching a trout at a foreigners’ fishing hole at a trout festival held in Hwacheon, Gangwon-do. The trout festival is one of the most representative winter festivals in Korea that is also attended by many foreigners. Foreign tourists enjoyed catching trout despite the cold weather. Their happiness with something so simple will remain with me for a long time.

After receiving permission to take a picture, I sent the women the photo via email.

I received a gracious reply thanking me for the good memory. As Indonesia is a country that is always hot, they said that they were thrilled to be able to go ice fishing.

2018년 9월 김해 김수로 왕릉에 있는 아름다운 능소화가 필 무렵, 한국 여행 중에 왕릉을 찾은 인도네시아 여성분을 만났습니다. 언어가 달라 대화는 할 수 없었지만, 그녀는 눈빛과 몸짓으로 한국의 아름다움을 충분히 표현해 주었습니다. 사진 촬영을 해도 되느냐고 양해를 구하니 흔쾌히 허락을 해주더 군요. 덕분에 멋진 사진을 찍을 수 있었습니다. 한국의 고택 속 외국인의 모습은 또 다른 느낌을 주었습니다. 사진으로 생활을 하고 있는 저로서도 김수로 왕릉에서의 인도네시아 여성분은 너무나 아름답게 보였답니다.

When the beautiful trumpet creepers at the Royal Tomb of King Suro in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do bloomed in September 2018, I met an Indonesian girl who was visiting the tomb during a tour of Korea. Due to language difference, I was unable to speak with her, but she fully expressed her appreciation of the beauty of Korea with her eyes and body gestures.

I managed to ask if I could take her picture, which she graciously allowed. After receiving permission, I was able to capture a wonderful moment. The juxtaposition of a foreigner with traditional Korean architecture is unusual and fascinating. Even for me, who takes pictures for a living and is used to seeing beauty, this Indonesian girl at the Royal Tomb of King Suro was breathtaking.

사진을 취미 삼아 찍는 중에 매년 열리는 동네 낙엽축제를 방문 했습니다. 송정제방길은 서울시에서 지정한 단풍명소 중 한 곳으로 가을을 담기 좋은 한적하고 예쁜 길이이에요. 작년 11월 10일 제 4회 낙엽축제에는 많은 국내외 관광객들이 방문했는데요. 한 태국여성이 흩날리는 낙엽 속에 분홍빛 전통의상을 입고 종이우산을 들고 포즈를 취하는 모습이 너무 아름다웠습니다. 허락을 구하고 포즈를 취해주는 그녀를 사진에 담아 보았어요. 송정제방길에서 이국적인 풍경이 더해지는 순간이었답니다.

I enjoy taking pictures as a hobby. While attending the annual Maple Festival held at my town, I took this picture of the embankment path in Songjeong-dong. It is a quiet and beautiful path for taking fall pictures and was designated as the one of Korea’s most beautiful maple attractions by Seoul Metropolitan Government. The 4th Maple Festival, which was held on November 10, 2018, was visited by many locals and foreign tourists.

One Thai woman posed for this picture wearing a traditional pink costume and holding a paper umbrella against the fluttering maple leaves. The beauty of this picture is entirely thanks to the subject, who generously gave me permission to feature her. The exotic view of the embankment path only adds to the beauty.

서울에 대한 나의 인상은 “사랑과 세련된 문화의 도시”인데 이 사진에서는 그 사실을 보여 주려했습니다. 사진에서는 처음으로 한복을 입고 경복궁의 문화 체험을 즐기고 있는 내 모습이 나와 있습니다. 궁전 여러 곳을 돌아 다니면서 한국의 역사와 한국 사람들이 고대에 어떻게 살아왔는지를 느꼈습니다. 서울에서 보낸 시간은 매우 즐거웠습니다. 경복궁뿐만 아니라

N 서울 타워, 강원도 남이섬, 쁘띠 프랑스 마을, 롯데 월드, 강남, 인사동, 홍대를 방문했습니다. 나는 비빔밥, 자장면, 불고기, 삼겹살, 김밥, 족발 등 한국 음식을 먹어보려 노력했다.(좋아한다!) 내가 좋아한 음식은 짜장면 인데 ‘까만 콩 국수’라고 부르기도 합니다. 가격이 저렴할 뿐 아니라 식욕을 돋구는 부드러운 국수와 특별한 소스가 좋습니다. 언젠가 또 다시 방문하고 싶습니다!

My impression of Seoul is “a city of love and sophisticated culture,” as I tried to show in this photo. It shows me wearing a hanbok for the first time ever to enjoy the cultural experience of Gyeongbokgung Palace. Walking from palace to palace, I felt their strong connection to the history of Korea and how Korean people lived in ancient times. The time that I spent in Seoul was very enjoyable: I visited not only Gyeongbokgung Palace but also N Seoul Tower, Nami Island (in Gangwon-do), Petite France Village, Lotte World, Gangnam, Insadong and Hongdae. I also tried (and loved!) many Korean foods, including bibimbap, jajangmyeon, bulgogi, samgyeopsal, kimbab and jokbal, My favorite was jajangmyeon, what people call “black bean noodles,” not just because it is affordable but also because of the appetizing soft noodles and special sauce. I wish to visit again someday!

여행을 좋아하는 두 명의 아름다운 인도네시아 소녀들은 넓은 한울 공원 에서 한복을 입고 감정을 표현하려고 합니다. 한복은 외국인들 사이에서 점점 인기가 높아지고 있습니다. 한복의 아름다움은 해외에서도 인정되었 습니다. 이복희 한복 디자이너는 “한복은 한국인의 문화와 라이프 스타일의 일부이며, 한국인이 아닌 사람들과 쉽게 공유하고 감상할 수 있다.” 라고 말했습니다. 한국에 온다면 한복을 입어봐야 합니다.

Hanbok increasingly popular among foreigners, the beauty of Hanbok has been recognized outside of Korea as well. Lee Young Hee, Hanbok designer said that “Hanbok is an element of Korean culture and lifestyle that can easily be shared and appreciated with non-Koreans”.Once we come to Korea we should use the Korean traditional clothes.

군입대 전 동남아 일주를 계획했습니다. 사진은 첫 번째 나라 베트남에서 찍은 사진입니다. 하노이는 베트남의 수도로 아직까지도 전통적인 모습을 많이 간직하고 있는데요. 그중에서 근대화의 대표 건물인 롱비엔다리는 아직까지도 큰 매력을 간직하고 있었습니다. 우리나라와 달리 롱비엔 다리에서는 열차가 지나가는 시간을 피해 선로 위에서 사진을 찍을 수 있습니다. 한국 전통 관광지에서 한복을 입고 사진을 찍는 사람들을 보면 참 아름답다고 느끼곤 했는데요. 제가 롱비엔 다리를 방문했을 때는 베트남 전통의상인 아오자이를 입은 여성분들을 볼 수 있었습니다. 베트남을 상징하는 옷인 아오자이와 건축물 롱비엔 다리가 만들어낸 아름다운 모습을 사진으로 담아봤습니다.

I planned a trip to multiple Southeast Asian countries before joining the army. The above picture was taken at Vietnam, the first country I visited. Hanoi is a capital of Vietnam and still has many traditional items of infrastructure. Of them, Long Bien Bridge is a representative structure of modernization that is still a major tourist attraction. Unlike in Korea, at Long Bien Bridge, people can take pictures at the railroad any time except for the times when trains actually pass through.

I always thought it was so beautiful when people took pictures wearing hanbok (Korean traditional costume) at traditional tourist attractions in Korea. When I visited Long Bien Bridge, I could see women in aosai, the Vietnamese traditional costume. This photo shows the beauty of both traditional Vietnamese clothing and architecture.

태국 담넌사두억 수상 시장은 좁은 수로를 따라 수많은 점포들이 거미줄 처럼 연결된 유명한 수상시장입니다. 원래는 이곳 주민들의 생필품을 사고팔던 시장이었는데, 지금은 관광객을 위한 다양한 태국 전통 상품을 판매하는 곳이 되었습니다. 그러다보니 수상시장에 가면 태국 사람은 보기 어렵고, 대부분 전세계에서 몰려온 관광객입니다. 작은 보트를 타고 수로를 이곳저곳 돌아다니면서 점포를 구경하는 재미가 좋은 곳입니다. 관광객을 상대로 먹을거리를 파는 상인도 많은데, 할머니가 바나나 몇 개를 보트에 싣고 팔러 다니는 모습이 정겨운 풍경이었습니다.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in Thailand is the one which is globally famous and so many shops are connected like spider web along the narrow waterway. Originally it was a market selling & buying the daily necessity of native residents but now it becomes a hot place to sell Thai traditional goods for tourists.

So, when you visit the floating market, you can hardly see Thai people but can see foreign tourists from the all over the world. This place is good for looking around along the waterway with a small boat. There were so many merchants to sell selling foods to tourists and the feature that one elder old woman loaded some bananas and sold them was affectionate.

라오스의 루앙프라방에서도 1시간 정도 떨어진 몽족 마을. 그곳에서 만난 할머니는 줄을 거두는 일을 하고 계셨습니다. 옆에 누가 지나가는지 조차 모른 채 일에 열중하고 계셨지요. 한참을 신기한 듯 구경 하고 있자니 마치 한국 시골 할아버지 할머니들이 소를 이용해 밭을 가는 모습과 비슷해 보였어요. 말은 통하지 않았지만, 우리나라 시골에서 많이 볼 법한 모습을 라오스에서 보고 있자니 아세안의 문화는 하나로 통하는 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다.

At a Hmong town, which is one hour away from Luang Prabang, Laos, I met an elderly woman who was winding up ropes. She did her work without taking note of anyone passing by. I looked on for a long time, because the sight was so oddly similar with the way in which old Koreans in the countryside plow fields using cattle.

We could not communicate with each other. But I did realize from the similarity of the woman’s appearance with elderly people in my home country that ASEAN cultures have many similarities with Korean culture that I have yet to learn.

먼 나라이면서도 가까운듯한 베트남 여행에서 그들의 생활이 궁굼해 찾아 간 곳은 베트남의 남부 무이네였습니다. 그곳 항구에서 새벽을 여는 여인들의 삶을 보면서 베트남 여인들의 부지런함을 볼 수 있었어요. 고달픈 일을 마치고 잠시 휴식을 취하는 여인들의 모습을 나름대로 카메라에 담아 보았습니다.

In a tour to Vietnam, which is far away geographically but close in mind, the place I visited due to curiosity about the daily life of the Vietnamese was Mui Ne, a southern area in Vietnam. I got a sense of the diligence of Vietnamese women while watching them working at a port in the earliest hours of morning. I took this picture of the women, who were taking a brief rest from their arduous labor.

하노이 여행 중 찍은 사진입니다. 여성이 장대를 어깨에 걸치고 여러 물건 들을 팔러 다니는 모습이 신기했습니다. 베트남 여성 박물관에 방문하며 알게 된 사실이었는데, 역사적으로 베트남은 여성들이 적극적인 사회활동을 해온 나라였습니다. 한국에는 없는 여성사 박물관이 존재한다는 사실도 놀라웠습니다. 또한 현재 베트남 경제의 여성 고용율, 여성의 지위 등 여러 수치들이 비교적 높은 수준을 보이고 있다는 것과 베트남의 경제발전에 여성들이 큰 이바지를 했다는 사실이 정말 재미있더라고요. 이런 사실을 알고 길거리에서 물건을 팔고 다니는 여성들을 보니 지난

30년 간 베트남의 경제 성장률이 10배나 증가했다는 사실이 확 와닿았 습니다. 아마 베트남 여성들이 경제력을 갖추고, 베트남이 빠르게 성장할 수 있었던 이유는 사진 속 어머니들과 같이 근면한 사람들이 많기 때문이 아닐까 싶습니다. 앞으로의 베트남이 더욱 기대됩니다!

The above picture was taken during a tour in Hanoi. It was amazing to me that a woman was selling various items all hanging from a single pole on her shoulder. I later learned at the Vietnamese Women’s Museum that, historically, Vietnamese women have actively participated in social activities. The existence itself of the Vietnamese Women’s Museum was amazing (something that Korea does not yet have). Also, it was interesting to see that various figures, such as the current female employment rate and status of women, are relatively high and that Vietnamese women contributed significantly to the economic development of Vietnam.

Afterward, whenever I saw Vietnamese women selling items on the streets, I suddenly realized that economic growth in Vietnam has increased 10-fold over the past 30 years. I think the reason is that Vietnamese women have economic power, and that Vietnam has grown rapidly due to the efforts of so many diligent people like the woman in the picture.

I have high expectations for the future growth of Vietnam!

인도네시아 인구의 대다수는 무슬림입니다. 한국을 여행 하는 도중 예배 장소를 찾고 할랄 음식을 먹기 어렵습니다. 그러나 한국에는 이슬람 문화를 접할 수 있는 지역인 이태원이 있습니다. 친구와 나는 1976년 개관 한 이태원 서울 중앙 모스크에 갔습니다. 그 곳은 1976년 오픈 했으며, 이태원 용산 지구 한남동에 있으며 영어, 아랍어, 한국어를 가르칩니다. 지하철이태원 역,지하철 6호선, 3번 출구 로 찾아 갈 수 있습니다. 이태원 소방서 앞에서 우회전하여 보광 초등학교 교차점에서 좌회전 후

100m 직진하면 됩니다. 여행하는 도중 우리는 많은 할랄 레스토랑을 보았고, 아시아 국가에서 온 많은 관광객을 만났습니다. 또한 한국에서 휴가를 보내고 있는 많은 말레이시아 사람들도 만났습니다. 우리는 회교 사원을 배경으로 함께 사진을 찍었는데, 한국식 “사랑” 표시를 하고 사진을 찍었습니다.

The majority of the Indonesian population is Muslim. When traveling in Korea, we find it difficult to find places of worship and eat halal food. But there is one area in Korea that is very Muslim-friendly: Itaewon. My friend and I went there to Seoul Central Mosque in Itaewon, which opened in 1976. It is located in Hannam-dong in Itaewon’s Yongsan district and holds lectures in English, Arabic, and Korean. You can go there by subway (Itaewon Station, subway line 6, exit 3). Take a right before the Itaewon Fire Station, take a left at the Bogwang Elementary School intersection, and then go straight for another 100 meters. Throughout our trip, we saw many halal restaurants and met many tourists from ASEAN countries. We met with a group of Malaysians who were also on vacation in Korea. We took pictures together with the mosque in the background while making the popular Korean “love” sign.

Two Korean women take a rest on a stone stool during a long trip around this famous historical tourist location in Penang, Malaysia. It is Kek Lok Si Temple, which is located at the top of a mountain. Kek Lok Si is the largest temple in Malaysia and also a key destination for pilgrimages from Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and other countries in Southeast Asia. There, you can see gifts given to Malaysian heads of state by the Manchu Emperor Kwang Xi and Empress Cixi of the Qing Dynasty.

남이섬으로 나들이를 갔다가 우연히 만나 사진을 찍어주게 된 인도네시아 친구입니다. 그녀는 다른 인도네시아 친구들과 한국 여행을 와서 남이섬 관광을 하는 중이었는데요. 친구들이 함께 사진을 찍어도 한 명이 빠져야 하는 상황이 조금 안타까워 제가 용기를 내게 되었습니다. 어설픈 영어로 소통하며 제 DSLR 카메라로 사진을 찍어주었는데요. 이메일로 사진을 보내준다고 하니, 무척 고맙다는 인사와 더불어 우리는 바로 친구가 되었습니다. 단체사진을 찍은 후에는 제 카메라로 인도네시아 친구들의 개인 사진도 찍어주었는데요. 출품한 사진은 여러 포즈를 취한 사진 중 하나입니다. 남이섬에서의 만남 얼마 후 저는 이메일로 사진을 보내주었고, 인도네시아 친구는 고맙다며 답장을 보내주었습니다. “제가 사진을 찍어줄까요? ”라는 말은 누구나 쉽게 할 수 있는 말입니다. 단지 그 대상이 외국인이었을 때 망설여지는 거겠죠. 진심을 가지고 용기를 내어 다가갔을 때 서로를 향한 경계심은 의외로 쉽게 허물어지고 친구가 될 수 있음을 알게 된 시간이었습니다.

The above photo shows a young Indonesia woman of whom I took a picture by accident when I went on a trip to Nami Island. She was traveling Nami Island as part of a trip to Korea with her Indonesian friends. I summoned up the courage to ask to take a picture, seeing that they were having a hard time taking a photo all together. I communicated as best as I could with my broken English and took a picture with my DSLR camera. I said that I would send the picture via email, for which they thanked me profusely. Soon, we were all friends. After taking a group picture, I took individual shots of each member.

The above picture is an example of this. A few days after this chance encounter, I sent all of the photos via email, for which I received a thank-you letter. “Do you mind if I take a picture?” This is something that anyone can easily say. But most people hesitate when the other person is a foreigner.

I learned that when I approach people with sincerity (and courage!), wariness is easily replaced by goodwill that transcends national borders.

한국에 관광을 온 캄보디아 친구들이 서울의 유명 관광지인 삼청동을 관광하며 사진을 찍는 모습입니다. 삼청동 감고당길에는 ‘WE ARE

YOUNG’이라는 이름의 벽화가 있는데요. 노부부가 입맞춤을 하며 행복한 미소를 짓는 표정의 작품입니다. 그 앞에서 사진 찍는 모습이 재밌어 보여 정중히 양해를 구한 후 사진을 찍었습니다. 그중 한 친구는 멋진 포즈를 취하며 즐거워하고 또 한 친구는 수줍어하면서도 웃으며 재밌어 하는 모습을 촬영했습니다. 서로 말은 통하지 않아도 찍고 찍히며 추억도 쌓고 즐거운 촬영시간이었습니다.

The picture shows that two girls who came to Korea for sightseeing from Cambodia took their pictures by touring Samcheong-dong, a famous touring tourist site in Seoul. At Gamgodang-gil (street) in Samcheong-dong, there is a mural named ‘WE ARE YOUNG’.

This work shows one old couple kisses and expresses a happy smile. The feature that two girls took pictures in front of such mural was seemed so interesting to me. So, I asked them if I could take their picture politely and then took it.

One of the girls, one took a nice pose with pleasure and another one was smiling and shy.

Those features was were taken by me. We could not communicate each other verbally but took the pictures pleasantly with some memories.

이 사진은 현재 내가 가르치고 있는 학교에서 열린 행사를 찍은 사진입니다. 한국 학교와의 교류 프로그램에 참여하면서 학생들과 경험을 공유하고 싶었습니다. 우리 학교는 접근이 많이 제한된 작은 마을에 위치하고 있습 니다. 나는 학생들의 시야를 열어주어 세상이 넓고 다양한 곳이라는 것을 알리고 싶었습니다. 현재 그들이 한국에 갈 수 없기 때문에 나는 한국 주간을 주최하여 학생들에게 한국을 “가져와 보여 주었습니다”. 그들은 흥분하여 그야말로 기뻐 날뛰었습니다! 나는 학생들에게 그들이 지구촌 시민임을 보여주고 싶었습니다.

This photo was taken during an event held at the school where I am currently teaching.

Having participated in an exchange program with a Korean school, I wanted to share my experience with my students. My school is located in a small village, where access is quite limited. I wanted to open my students’ eyes and let them know that the world is a wide and diverse place. Since it is not currently possible for them to go to Korea, I “brought” Korea to my students by hosting Korea Week. They were so excited that they literally jumped for joy! I wanted to show my students that they are citizens of a global village.

서울 광화문에서 태국 전통무용단이 아름다운 태국 춤을 한국에 소개하는 모습입니다. 태국 전통춤의 특징은 부드럽고 느리고 우아하다고 합니다. 태국인들은 아름다운 꽃이 많이 피고 농산물이 풍부하여 사람들이 서두르지 않으며 자연에 순응하며 살아서 춤과 문화에도 그런 특징이 있다고 합니다. 본 작품은 태국 전통춤의 부드럽고 우아한 춤사위를 담았습니다. 특히 무희들의 표정이 참 밝고 의상과 손동작 모습도 아름답습니다.

The above picture shows the feature that Thai traditional dance group introduced their beautiful Thai dance to Korea at Gwanghwamun, Seoul. The Characteristics of Thai traditional dance are smooth, slow, and elegant. As many beautiful flowers bloom and there are so many farm agricultural products in Thailand, Thai people do not hurry and live by adapting to the nature. Their dance and culture reflect such characteristics.

This work contains so smooth and elegant dancing steps of Thai traditional dance. In particular, the Expressions of dancers are bright and their costumes and had movements are also beautiful.

저는 배낭여행자의 성지라는 태국을 항상 마음에 담아 왔습니다. 그러던 중 아세안 사진공모전 공고가 올라왔고 한치의 망설임 없이 배낭 하나 메고 태국의 방콕으로 향했습니다. 무거운 배낭에, 더운 태국의 2월 날씨는 몸에 열이 많은 제게 어쩌면 힘든 여행길을 알리는 신호였을지도 모릅니다. 달궈진 몸을 이끌고 카메라를 손에 감고 카오산 로드에 있는 상점들을 지나치고 있었습니다. 2시간 쯤 걸었을까요. 많이 지쳐 물을 마시러 들어간 상점 거울에 비친 제 얼굴은 인상을 쓰고 있더군요. 물을 한 잔 마시고 나오는 길에 태국 전통 의상을 입으신 분들이 밝게 미소를 지은 채 춤을 추고 있는 모습을 발견했습니다. 덕분에 지친 몸과 마음에 활기를 얻었고 중요한 것을 깨달았습니다. ‘덥다고 인상 쓰지 말자. 추운 나라에서는 추운 것이 당연하며, 더운 나라에서 더운 것도 당연하다. 이 햇빛을 받아들이자.’ 이분들의 미소 덕분에 저는 남은 여행을 미소를 지으며 마무리 할 수 있었습니다.

Thailand, which is known as a mecca for backpackers, has a special place in my memories. After seeing a notice for the ASEAN Photography Contest one day, I left for Thailand with one backpack without any hesitation.

With the Thai weather (which is hot even in February) and heaviness of the backpack, I realized that my trip would not be an easy one (I tire easily from hot weather!).

After drinking a glass of water, I found some people in traditional Thai costumes who were dancing, all with bright smiles. This made me realize that there were things that are more important than feeling hot and tired. I told myself not to frown because it’s hot, and that in a country with cold weather, feeling cold is natural, while in a country with hot weather, feeling hot is also natural. Thanks to the smiles of the Thai people in the above photo, I was able to embark on the rest of my Thai trip with a renewed sense of purpose.

이 사진은 대구 가톨릭 대학교 Daegu Catholic University 가 개최 한 국제 축제에서 찍은 것으로, DCU의 유학생들은 자신의 나라에서 온 제품과 식품을 판매했습니다. 학생들은 또한 전통 노래와 춤 공연을 했습니다. 이 사진에서 몇몇 베트남 학생들은 순수하고 우아함을 상징하는 아름다운 베트남 의상 “아오자이”와 베트남 사람의 일상 생활을 나타내는 “논라” 라는 원추형 모자를 입고 춤을 추었습니다.

This photo was taken at an international festival held by Daegu Catholic University, in which the international students at DCU sold products and foods from their native countries. Students also gave performances of traditional songs and dances. In this photo, several Vietnamese students perform a dance dressed in the beautiful Vietnamese “ao jai,” which symbolizes purity and elegance, and conical hats called “non la,” which represent the daily life of the Vietnamese.

태국에서 놀러온 어여쁜 두 친구들입니다! 한국에서 가장 아름다운 곳을 소개해 주기 위해 경복궁을 지나 북촌한옥마을에 왔습니다. 아름답게 한복을 차려입으니 한옥마을과 너무나 잘 어울렸습니다. 마침 미세먼지도 없어 파란하늘과 함께 마을을 구경할 수 있었어요. 서울의 랜드마크 남산 타워를 중심으로 멋진 인생샷을 담아주었습니다. ‘사랑해요 한국’ 포즈 입니다! 외국인 친구는 나중에는 꼭 가족들과 함께 한국에 방문하고 싶다고 합니다.

In order to introduce the most beautiful places in Korea to two young Thai women, we went to Bukchon Hanok Village after dropping by Gyeongbokgung Palace. They look beautiful in hanbok, matching perfectly with their traditional Korean surroundings. On that day, we were lucky to have no fine dust, allowing us to take time to truly explore Seoul. The best photo from the day shows N Seoul Tower, a landmark in Seoul, in the center. Their pose means “I Love Korea!” The girls said they wish to visit Korea again with their families.

나는 다른 나라의 전통의상에 매료되어 있습니다. 흔히 전통의상은 한 국가의 정체성을 표현하며, 개인의 사회적 지위를 나타냅니다. 이런 이유로 나는 역사 영화나 드라마들을 즐겨보는데 항상 한국에 대한 홍보를 효과 적으로 잘합니다. 한국을 방문했을 때 저는 한복을 입어보고 민속촌을 가 보았습니다. 이 사진은 2018년 10월 한국 민속촌에서 한복을 입고 찍은 사진입니다.

I am fascinated with the traditional clothing of other countries. Traditional clothing expresses the identity of a nation and also often indicates an individual’s social status.

This is why I love watching historical movies and dramas, in which Korea always does a great job promoting their culture. When I visited Korea, I made sure to experience hanbok and folk village. This photo is of me wearing hanbok at Korea Folk Village that was taken in October 2018.

On a Wedding Day for a New Bride

한국으로 시집 와서 여러 사정으로 결혼식을 올리지 못하고 살고 있는 다문화가정을 대상으로 영주시 여성단체협회에서는 2013년 부터 결혼식을 올려주고 있는데요. 경북 영주시 선비촌에서 다문화 동거부부 합동 전통 혼례식을 실시하고 있어요. 전통혼례는 색동옷을 입고 청사초롱을 밝히는 초롱동이를 앞세우고 가마를 탄 신랑·신부 입장으로 시작되는데요. 혼례 절차는 전안례-친영례-관세례교배례-합근례 순으로 진행됩니다. 위 사진은 한국의 전통혼례식에 참석하기 위하여 전통혼례복 차림으로 가마를 타고 활짝 웃는 새색시의 모습을 촬영한 것입니다.

The Women’s Association of the city of Yeongju has held wedding ceremonies since 2013 for multicultural couples who were unable to hold weddings due to various reasons.

Seonbichon (Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do) hosts traditional joint wedding ceremonies for multicultural couples.

The traditional Korean wedding ceremony begins with the entrance of the bridegroom and bride riding on gama (traditional Korean sedan chair) led by a child in colorful clothes holding cheongsachorong (traditional Korean lantern). The order of a traditional wedding is as follows: Jeonanrye – Chinyoungrye – Gwanserye – Gyobaerye – Hapgeunrye.

필리핀에서 온 여자분의 전통결혼식 현장입니다. 신랑에게는 초등학생 아이들을 있었는데요. 아이들의 친구들이 하객이 되어 서로 축하해주고 있는 모습입니다. 이제는 다문화가정도 무척 많아지고 다문화 가정 아이 들도 많아지는데 좀 더 다양성을 존중하는 사회가 되길 바라는 마음입니다. 그리고 전통혼례도 사람들이 많이 올렸으면 하는 생각도 들었답니다. 두 분 행복하세요!

This picture shows a site where Korean traditional wedding ceremony of a woman from the Philippines. The bridegroom had children attending the elementary school and their friends celebrated the wedding ceremony as guests. Nowadays, you can see so many multicultural families and their children. So I hope that the Korean society would respect these diversity better. Also, I wish more and more people would prefer the Korean traditional wedding ceremony more. (The Happy wedding for both bride and bridegroom!)

베트남, 필리핀, 태국 등 다문화 가정의 어머님들이 한국어도 배우고 여러 가지 프로그램을 배우는 센터에서 아이들과 함께 소풍을 나와 즐기는 모습을 사진에 담았습니다. 한가족처럼 지낸다고 하시면서 모두 함께 점프를 하는데, 다문화가정의 희망을 보는 듯 했습니다. 이제 우리나라에도 많은 다문화가정이 있습니다. 편견을 가지지 않고, 서로 배려하고 같은 민족으로 봐주면서 살아가는 사회가 되길 바라는 마음에 공모전에 참가합니다.

I took the picture of mothers of multi-cultural families from Vietnam, Philippines, and Thailand enjoying the picnic with their children together with the people from the center where theses mothers learn Korean and various programs. They said they were getting along well like one family and then, all mothers jumped. I saw the hope of multicultural family, I thought. Now, Korea also has so many multicultural family. With the hope that Korean society would not have any prejudice for them and consider them as the same people, I participated to in this contest.

필리핀 출신의 대학생들은 한국과 필리핀의 유명한 간식으로 한국 문화에 대한 관심을 공유합니다. 학교 구내 식당에서 한국 음식을 판매하기 때문에 한국 음식이 이제는 학생들의 일상 생활에서 일부가 되었습니다. 학생들은 좋은 음식 이상의 것을 공유합니다 : 그들은 또한 흥미 진진한 이야기를 나누고 한국에서의 모험에 대한 뜻 깊은 기억을 되살립니다. 두 나라가 천 마일 이상 떨어져 있지만 학생들은 여전히 필리핀에서도 한국을 맛볼 수 있습니다. 음식과 이야기를 통해 아시아 국가에서 유대감을 형성하고 우정을 쌓으며 한국을 경험할 수 있습니다.

University students from the Philippines bond over their shared interest in Korean culture with famous snacks from both Korea and the Philippines. Since Korean food is sold at the school cafeteria, it has now become a part of the students’ daily lives.

The students share more than just good food: they also share exciting stories and relive meaningful memories of the adventures they had in Korea. Although the two countries are more than a thousand of miles apart, students are still able to get a taste of Korea even in the Philippines. Through food and through stories they are able to bond, build friendships, and experience Korea in an ASEAN country.

이 장면은 LED 장미 정원을 중심으로 동대문 디자인 플라자에 비춘 아름 다운 야간 조명을 담았다. 남산 타워를 바라 보면서 이 놀라운 경관과 구조를 동시에 볼 수 있었던 것은 놀라운 순간이었다. 밤에는 엄청난 추위와 싸워야 했지만 산책할 만한 가치가 있었습니다. 처음으로 서울을 방문한다면 반드시 가야 할 곳입니다. 다음번에도 정말 가고 싶다는 마음이 들 것입니다.

This shot took place in Dongdaemun Design Plaza around the ever-known LED rose garden, lighting up beautifully at night. Looking towards the Namsan Tower, it was a jawdropping moment to get to see these amazing landscape and structure simultaneously.

While fighting with the extreme cold at night, it was worth the walk. Definitely a must-go place when in Seoul for first-timers, it will make you feel like coming back next time, really.

In Korea, approximately 18 percent of total land mass is farmland. In each country in ASEAN (excluding Singapore), this figure rises to over 30 percent. Abundance of farmland, mild temperatures, and high levels of precipitation have contributed to the development of agriculture in ASEAN countries. In addition, ASEAN countries have diverse culinary cultures and beautiful nature environments that have thus far contributed significantly to the development of tourism. The photos in this exhibition show the faces of people in ASEAN countries who work in diverse occupations and lead diligent lives. The hard-working nature of people in ASEAN countries is closely connected to their religions, which permeate Southeast Asia. ASEAN countries in which multiple religions coexist actively host various religious events and festivals. The features of the people in the photos embody the harmony between work, leisure, and religion and give viewers a chance to reflect on the nature of true happiness.

Welcome! First Time in Myanmar

사진 속 포즈는 무엇을 하는 모습으로 보이나요? 치마를 입고 쪼리를 신은 발. 그리고 알 수 없는 제스처와 꼭 쥐고 있는 지폐들. 참 궁금증을 유발하는 사진인데요. 아주 멋스러운 춤을 추고 있는 듯한 저 포즈의 사진은 바로 미얀마 버스차장의 모습입니다. 저 모습은 제가 미얀마에 도착하고 처음으로 마주한 전통의상 론지를 입은 현지인의 모습입니다. 한국방송프로그램 ‘어서와. 한국은 처음이지’ 라는 프로그램 이름처럼 미얀마에 처음 온 저를 반갑게 맞이해주는 듯한 느낌이었습니다. 미얀마를 검색해보면 화려한 사원들, 저렴한 물가 등 관광을 위한 글과 사진뿐이었는데, 그보다도 저는 미얀마 사람들에게 감동받은 부분들이 많았어요.

K드라마 열풍으로 인해 능숙하게 “안녕하세요”를 하며 먼저 다가오는 사람들. 그리고 친절한 배려심들 덕분에 더 재미있는 미얀마 여행이었던 것 같습니다.

The picture shows a local person dress in a longy, a traditional costume of Myanmar which I saw for the first time in Myanmar. I almost felt like a participant in the Korean entertainment program Welcome First Time In Korea? When I searched Myanmar online, there were only posts and photos for sightseeing, such as temples and cheap prices. But once I physically arrived in Myanmar, there were so many fascinating things about this country.

Due to K-Drama fever, people often approached me first, saying “An-nyeong-ha-seyo (Hello).” Thanks to the kindness of the Myanmar people, I had a wonderful time in Myanmar.

말레이시아 페낭힐은 해발 830m 높이의 언덕입니다. 정상에서는 페낭섬 전체를 조망할 수 있으며, 페낭섬에서 가장 높은 곳으로 꼽히지요. 페낭힐을 올라가기 위해서는 ‘후니쿨라’라는 케이블카를 타고 이동하는 것이 좋은데요. 후니쿨라는 관광 목적 뿐 아니라 페낭 힐로 화물을 이송할 때도 중요 교통수단으로 사용된답니다. 45도 경사의 언덕을 올라가는 케이블카는 울창한 대나무 숲속을 약 30분간 지나는데요. 올라가는 길에는 다양한 식물뿐만 아니라 원숭이 무리들도 볼 수 있습니다. 페낭힐에는 하이킹 코스도 발달해 있는데요. 그래선지 외국인들도 이 케이블카를 많이 이용합니다. 여러 나라의 사람들을 실은 케이블카는 바람을 가르며 페낭힐을 향해 달립니다. 모두가 즐거운 표정이네요.

Penang Hill in Malaysia is a hill with a height of 830 meters. At the hill’s peak, you can see the entire island of Penang. The peak is also the highest place in the Island.

In order to go up Penang Hill, it is recommended to take a cable car known as “Funicula.”

Funicula is used mainly for transporting freight to Penang Hill as well as for tours.

The cable car in the photo is going up the 45-degree hill slope past a dense bamboo forest, which it did for about 30 minutes. While going up, you can see groups of monkeys as well as various plants.

There is also a hiking course in Penang Hill, but most people (including foreign tourists) tend to use the cable car. The cable car, having been loaded with people from many countries, moves up to Penang Hill while cutting through the winds. Everybody seems so happy.

쌀쌀한 토요일 아침에 두 명의 태국 남자가 향남 마을 경기도 화성시 의 발안 지구에서 맛있는 한국 간식을 발견합니다. 커다란 만두를 먹은 후, 남자들은 노점에서 구입한 맛있는 한국 디저트를 집으로 가져오기로 했습니다. 화성의 발안 뒷골목에서는 다양한 동남아 음식과 함께 전통적인 한국 음식도 팔고 있습니다.

베트남 호이안, 누구나 한 번씩 가는 올드타운에서 사진을 찍기 위해 배를 타려고 기다리며 찍었던 사진입니다. 사진 속 할아버지는 바로 그 배를 운행하시는 분이셨습니다. 손님을 태우기 위해 관광객들에게 이리저리 바쁘게 호객행위를 하다가, 결국 지치셨는지 수염을 쓰다듬으며 쉬고 계셨습니다. 무엇보다 제가 이 사진을 통해 표현하고 싶었던 것은, 세월과 그에서 나오는 여유로움입니다. 이 사진을 통해 바쁜 일상 속에서 벗어나 조금의 여유를 갖기를 희망해봅니다.

The above picture was taken when I was waiting for a boat to visit the old town in Hoi An, Vietnam where any tourist would visit once for taking the pictures. The old man in the picture was the one who paddled the boat. He called tourists for boat riding here and there and finally he got tired and rested patting his beard. What I wanted to express in this picture was time and relaxation from it. I hope everyone could have a little more time avoiding so busy daily life seeing this picture.

저는 베트남에 교환학생으로 갔습니다. 학기 시작하기 전, 저는 글로만 접했던 베트남을 직접 눈으로 보고 싶어 밖으로 나섰습니다. 세계 어느 나라나 그들의 문화와 의식주를 한 번에 보고, 경험할 수 있는 곳이 시장 이잖아요. 저 또한 베트남 시장으로 갔죠. 시장에는 많은 오토바이와 사람들로 북적 였습니다. 물론 이런 풍경은 베트남을 찾은 사람이라면 어디 서나 흔하게 볼 수 있다고 생각할지도 모르겠어요. 하지만 여기서 저는 그들의 ‘부지런함’ 을 발견하게 되었습니다. 베트남 역사에는 <디엔비엔푸 전투>라는 유명한 전투가 있습니다. 프랑스 식민지였던 당시 프랑스군의 보급로를 차단한 전투였습니다. 험난한 산에 대포를 끌고 가 적의 예상을 뒤엎었던 전투로도 유명합니다. 이 전투에서는 베트남 군인 외에도 국민들도 그 대포를 옮기고 길을 닦았다고 해요. 밤낮을 가리지 않고 후손들에게 자유와 더 나은 세상을 주기 위해 부지런히 움직였던 베트남인들의 모습을 이 시장에서 찾아볼 수 있었어요.실제로 베트남 사람들은 대부분 새벽 5시에 일과를 시작한다고 합니다. 긴 세월이 흘러도 부지런함을 잃지 않는 그들의 모습이 경이롭게 보였습니다.

I used to be an exchange student in Vietnam. Before the start of the new semester, I went out into the city to see for myself what daily life is like in Vietnam, which I had only read about in books. For me, the market is always the best place to see and experience local culture and the necessities of life when visiting foreign countries. Naturally, the first place I went was a Vietnamese market. At the market, there were so many bikes and people, which is probably what most visitors think when in Vietnam. But I found that the hard-working ethic of the Vietnamese people was just as striking. The Battle of Dien Bien Phu was a battle that occurred while Vietnam was a colony of France that blocked the supply route of the French army. It is also famous for going against the enemy’s expectations in that troops carried cannons up Vietnam’s rocky mountains.

In this battle, citizens carried cannons and paved roads—doing their part for the war alongside soldiers. At the market, I saw in the hard-working Vietnamese merchants the persistence of a previous generation of Vietnamese for freedom and the desire to hand down a better world to their descendants. The Vietnamese are famous for starting their work day at 5:00 am. Such diligence, which is just as true today as it was hundreds of years ago, is extraordinary to me.

베트남 다낭, 호이안의 야경을 담은 사진입니다. 거리에 걸려있는 아름 다운 조명들과 바쁘게 움직이는 사람들의 모습이 어우러진 것이 너무 인상 깊어서 근처 카페 옥상에 올라 사진을 찍었습니다. 현대적인 건물이 많고 발전되어 있는 다낭 시내와 달리 호이안은 전통 적인 모습이 많이 남아있는데, 그 모습을 사진을 통해 볼 수 있습니다. 다낭의 전통 적인 모습을 중심으로 멀리 현대적인 모습도 함께 보이도록 촬영했어요. 현재 많은 옛 것들, 우리의 전통이 점점 사라지고 있는데요. 이 사진을 통해 많은 사람들이 아름다운 전통의 모습을 지켜나가자는 마음을 한 번 되새겨 봤으면 좋겠습니다.

The above picture shows a nighttime view of Da Nang and Hoi An, Vietnam. I took this picture by going up to the roof of a nearby cafe because the harmony between the beautiful street lights and fast- moving people was so impressive.

Unlike downtown Da Nang, which has many modern buildings and shows evidence of significant urban development, Hoi An still has many traditional features. This is apparent in the above picture, which I took from far away to juxtapose modern features with a focus on traditional features.

Nowadays, many old things and traditions are gradually disappearing. I hope that with the above picture, many people can be reminded of the importance of protecting tradition.

미얀마 여행 중 우연히 현지인들의 큰 축제를 함께하게 되었습니다. 현지인들이 말해주는 축제 이름은 보름달 축제인 것 같았어요. 그 날이 보름달이 휘영청 밝은 날이었거든요. 보름달이 떠오르자 부락민들이 각자 만든 열기구들을 갖고 약속된 사원의 넓은 마당으로 모였어요. 부락의 순서에 따라 준비해 온 열기구들에 불을 붙여 날리면서 소원을 염원하는 행사가 열렸습니다. 남녀노소 모두 한 자리에 모여 열기구를 날리면서 노래하고 춤추며 축제를 즐기는 모습에서, 건강과 풍년을 바라는 마음을 엿볼 수 있었습니다.

During a trip to Myanmar, I accidentally ended up joining a big local festival. The name of the festival, which locals said was the “Full Moon Festival,” perfectly embodied the bright and shining full moon of that night.

As the full moon rose, villagers gathered to a wide yard of a temple, each with a hot air balloon prepared in advance. According to the age-old order of festivities, they lit the hot-air balloons and made wishes while watching them rise into the night sky. From the features of the hot air balloons and people singing, dancing, and enjoying the festival in one place, I could see how fervently everyone hoped for health and a rich harvest.

트레킹 코스로 유명한 미얀마의 껄로 Kalaw 지역 사람들은 해마다 불꽃 놀이 축제를 즐깁니다. 그것도 아주 대담하고 열정적으로 말이죠. 우리가 저만치 떨어져서 불꽃놀이를 구경한다면, 그들은 불꽃이 떨어지는 바로 그 아래에서 제대로 즐긴답니다. 폭죽이 여기저기서 폭발하고 있는 그 때, 열정적인 그들의 모습을 담고 싶어서 저도 폭죽 속으로 뛰어들었습니다.

People in the Kalaw region of Myanmar, which is famous for trekking, enjoy a fireworks festival each year. The festival is full of a bold and passionate energy. While most people watch the fireworks from a distance, the people of Myanmar enjoy them from right underneath.

With firecrackers exploding here and there, I rushed into the fray, because I wanted to take a picture of people at their most passionate.

천국의 맛, 지옥의 냄새. 두리안은 말레이시아, 태국, 인도네시아, 필리핀 등 아세안 지역 일대에서 재배되는 ‘과일의 왕’입니다. 풍부하고 달콤한 맛과는 달리 지독한 악취 때문에 두리안을 소지한 사람은 싱가포르의 대중교통을 이용할 수 없고, 태국 등에선 호텔 입실이 불가능합니다. 이러한 금지령 탓에 자칫하면 두리안이 냉대 받는 존재라고 오해할 수 있지만, 실상은 아세안인들로부터 사랑받는 수출 효자상품입니다. 뉴욕이 “큰 사과”로 불리는 것을 본떠 인도네시아 자카르타에는 “큰 두리안”이라는 애칭이 붙었고, 말레이시아와 인도네시아의 전설에는 두리안이 흔히 등장하며, 싱가포르의 맥도날드에서는 두리안이 들어간 맥플러리 맥도날드의 시그니쳐 아이스크림 를 파는 등 두리안이 아세안의 정체성을 이루는 중요한 가닥임은

자명해보입니다. 싱가포르의 거리를 걷다가 멀리서부터 풍겨오는 고약한 냄새에 이것이 나의 인생 첫 두리안과의 조우임을 알 수 있었습니다. 냄새는 지독하나 맛은 환상적인 그 반전 매력에 나 또한 매혹되어, 심야에도 발길이 끊이지 않던 두리안 가게를 매일 들르곤 했습니다. 인생이란 마치 두리안 같은 것이 아닐까, 하는 진부한 비유가 떠오릅니다.

Taste of heaven and smell of hell. Durian with such nickname is a ‘king of fruit’ grown in the whole area in ASEAN countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Unlike the rich and sweet taste, due to the deadly smell, those having the durian cannot use public transportations in Singapore and cannot enter into the hotels in Thailand. Due to the such prohibition order, you may think durian is disliked but actually, it is the best item in export and is beloved from people in ASEAN countries. Copying that New York is called as “Big Apple”, the nickname of “Big Durian” was made in Jakarta, Indonesia and in the myths in Malaysia and Indonesia, durian is often found. Even in McDonald in Singapore, McFlurry with durian (signature ice cream of McDonald) is sold. So, it is clear that durian is the important one consisting the identities of ASEAN countries. I smelled something so bad from the distance while I was walking a street in Singapore and I realized this was the first time I smelled durian in my life. Its smell was so bad but the taste was fantastic. So, I was attracted to this fruit and I dropped by a durian shop which was full of people to buy durian even at midnight. I hit upon a trite metaphor that the life may be like a durian.

미얀마는 국민의 대다수가 불교를 믿는 나라로 불교문화가 생활 곳곳 깊게 자리잡고 있습니다. 스님은 미얀마 남성들이 가장 선호하는 직업 인데, 단계별 시험을 통과하면 담마차리야 법 사 로 대학 졸업과 같은 자격을 얻고 사회에서도 우대를 받습니다. 우선 스님이 되려면 삭발 출 가 의식을 하고 사미승 예비스님이 되어야 합니다. 하지만, 고아원에서 생활하는 아이들은 경제적 문제로 인해 출가 의식을 할 수 없습니다. 그래서 한국에서 봉사를 간 스님들이 직접 아이들을 도와주어 꿈을 이룰 수 있게 삭발 출가 의식을 도와주십니다. 스님들은 삭발의식 뿐만 아니라 우물을 파서 식수 문제를 해결해 주거나, 쌀과 같은 식량을 후원하여 실질적인 문제를 해결해주시기도 합니다.

In Myanmar, most people believe in Buddhism and Buddhist Culture is deeply settled to everywhere in Myanmar. The monk is the most preferred job by Myanmarese men and when passing the test step by step, that person can obtain the qualification like university graduation as Buddhist priest and can receive the better treatment from the society.

First, in order to be a monk, you have to make a tonsure (entering the Buddhist priesthood) ritual and to be prospective ordinand (candidate monk). But, children living at orphanage cannot make such tonsure ritual due to the economic problem.

So, Korean monks who volunteer the service at Myanmar help these children to make such tonsure ritual which is their dream. These Korean monks solve the drinking water problem by digging a well as well as help the tonsure ritual. Otherwise, they solve the actual problem by sponsoring the foodstuffs like the rice.

새벽 6 시부터 시작되는 라오스 루앙프라방 스님들의 딱밧 의식을 경험 해보기 위해 새벽 5시에 일어났습니다. 1인당 3불을 내면 스님들이 발우를 들고 지나가는 길목에다 쪼그리고 앉을 수 있는 의자, 방석, 돗자리와 함께 라오스식 찹쌀밥 khao lam 인 카오냐오 khao niew 를 담아 놓은 대나무로 만든 밥그릇을 하나씩 주는데요. 스님들이 발우를 내밀면 초밥크기로 꽉 쥐어 만들어 놓은 찹쌀밥을 발우 안에다 한 덩이씩 넣어주거나 과자같은 간식이나 현금을 넣어주면 됩니다.

I woke up at 5:00 am in order to experience the “ritual of monks” in Luang Prabang, Laos (the procedure begins at 6:00 am). Each person pays three dollars, after which you take one chair to sit at the street corner where monks pass holding a large bowl, one sitting cushion, one mat, and one rice bowl made of bamboo containing khao niew, which is Laos-style boiled glutinous rice (khao lam). When monks hold out their large bowls, you have to put in one lump of boiled glutinous rice which has already been portioned into sushi-like sizes, snacks (e.g. cookies), or cash.

현재 국내에서 유통되는 냉이의 80% 이상은 충남 홍성에서 나는 냉이입니다. 신동리, 궁리, 장곡리 마을엔 겨울밭 일이 바쁘기만 합니다. 농사가 다 그렇듯이 냉이 재배 또한 홍성의 인력만으로는 감당하지 못해 외국인력에 많이 의존하고 있는 실정이에요. 홍성에서는 냉이캐기 하는 외국인 여성이 40여명 정도 된다고 합니다. 대부분은 베트남에서 한국으로 시집을 온 여성들이라고 해요. 사진으로 보면 얼굴이 많이 가려져 구분이 힘들지만, 우리의 식탁을 위해 함께 일하는 모습은 고맙고, 정겹고 그렇습니다.

More than 80 percent of the shepherd’s purse sold in Korea is picked from Hongseong, Chungchungnam-do. The towns of Sindong-ri, Gung-ri, and Janggok-ri are extremely busy each winter due to field work. Like all other types of farming, the cultivation of shepherd’s purse is also dependent on the labor of foreigners, as the work that needs to be done cannot be done by Hongseong natives alone.

In Hongseong, there are 40 women from foreign countries who pick shepherd’s purse.

Most of them came to Korea from Vietnam as marriage immigrants. It is difficult to point them out in this picture, but this does not change the fact that their labor is essential to our society and economy.

사진 속 풍경은 요즘 우리나라에서는 쉽게 볼 수 없는 풍경입니다. 소 두 마리가 나란히 논을 갈고 있습니다. 소를 모는 농부는 고단하듯 웃음기가 없습니다. 기계 문명이 아직 닿지 않은 이곳이 낙원인 줄 알고 있었는데, 고단한 농부의 모습에 가슴이 싸해져 옵니다. 갈려진 논 속에서 놀라서 튀어나오는 개구리는 오리들의 훌륭한 식사거리가 되고 있습니다. 오리는 만찬을 즐기건만 소와 농부는 고단한 모습이 역력합니다. 이제 우리는 볼 수 없는 저 광경을 이역만리에서 사진으로 담아보았습니다.

The picture shows a scene that is not easy to witness in Korea. Two cattle are plowing a rice field. The farmer who is driving the cattle is not smiling, most likely because he is tired. I thought this place, which has not yet been affected by machines, was a paradise, but the face of the tired farmer made me think otherwise. Frogs jumping out from the plowed rice field became excellent (and unexpected) meals for the ducks. The ducks enjoy their meal, but the cattle and farmer seemed very tired. It was a unique experience for me to take a picture of something that used to be common in Korea in a country that is far away.

미얀마 여행 중 일주일 동안 면도를 하지 않고 있던 상황이었는데, 바간의 마을에서 이발관을 발견했습니다. 마침 현지인들의 생활을 직접 체험해보고 싶은 마음도 생겨서 이발관에 모여 있던 주민들에게 면도를 하게 해달라고 부탁했습니다. 10분 정도 뒤에 동네주민들이 이발관 주인을 불러왔는데, 그 사람을 보자 마자. ‘앗! 나다!!!’ 라는 생각이 들었습니다. 서로가 서로의 닮음을 바로 알아보았습니다. 나이도 비슷해 제가 먼저 ‘친구’를 하자고 말했죠. 온 동네 주민들이 지켜보는 가운데 면도를 했는데, 비용을 지불하려고 하니 지인이 한사코 받으려고 하지 않았습니다. 저는 그냥갈 수가 없어 사진을 찍어주고, 포토프린트로 인화하여 선물을 해주고 왔습니다. 사실 면도할 때 그 친구가 긴장을 하며 손을 많이 떨기도 하고, 면도날이 무뎌서 얼굴에 생채기도 나고 많이 따끔했었어요. 그래도 웃으며 기분 좋게 받은 행복한 면도였습니다. 이발사는 왼쪽에서 두 번째 남자입니다.

While traveling in Myanmar, I had not shaved for a week. I found a barbershop at a town in Bagan. At the time, I wanted to experience local life and asked residents the location of the barbershop. After about 10 minutes, they called over the shop’s owner, who I immediately realized looks a lot like me!

We immediately recognized our similar appearance and soon learned that we are also similar in age. I suggested that we become “friends.” I was shaved while all of the residents looked on. I tried to pay for the shave, but the shop owner would not hear of it.

Instead of payment, I took a picture of the owner and printed it out with a photo printer as a gift. While shaving, the owner seemed to be nervous—I could feel his hands shake.

Also, the razor blade was a bit dull, resulting in a small prick on my face. But it was the best shave I ever received. The barber is the second person from the left.

필리핀 어느 섬에 도착해서 여행중이었는데, 저 멀리서 기타소리가 들려 왔습니다. 가까이 다가가서 보니 나이 지긋하신 할아버지가 홀로 노래를 부르며 연주를 하고 계셨어요. 그 모습이 신기해 한참을 보고 있었는데, 나를 위해 연주를 해주신다고 하더라고요. 덕분에 할아버지의 연주를 한참을 듣고 이야기를 나누었어요. 어떨떨했지만 할아버지는 남을 위해 연주를 하는 걸 좋아하시는 듯 보였어요. 뜻하지 않은 나만의 작은 음악회가 되었던 그날의 사진입니다.

I was traveling after arriving to some island in the Philippines and I heard a guitar sound far away. I approached to there and found an old man was playing a guitar and singing alone. I watched it for a while as it was so curious, and he said he played it for me. Thanks to him, I listened to his play for a long time and I talked with him. I was somewhat puzzled but it seemed that he liked to play a guitar for others. The picture shows that day when a small concert only for me was held unexpectedly.

People from around the world choose ASEAN countries as most-preferred travel destinations for their beautiful nature, magnificent cultural heritages, and hospitality of locals. The travel destinations visited most frequently by Koreans are also almost entirely ASEAN countries with the exception of China and Japan, which have geographical proximity with Korea. Over 300,000 Koreans have already immigrated to ASEAN countries. All of this is accompanied by a steady recent increase of tourists from ASEAN countries to Korea.

Korean culture is now well-recognized by citizens of ASEAN countries in the form of “K-Pop,” “K-Beauty,” and “K-Food.” The exhibited photos show Koreans and people in ASEAN countries learning, sharing, and experiencing each others’ cultures. They show an active willingness to tolerate differences and learn coexistence through travel and exchanges.

Bukhansan Mountain is one of the most beautiful places in Seoul, which we visited in July 2015. At the time, we did not bring enough food and water, because we thought it would be an easy and short excursion. We were very lucky in that we met many friendly Koreans. Mr. Kim and his friend gave us food and directions for reaching Baekundae Peak (836 MASL). Thank you very much, South Korea! We will always remember your natural beauty and hospitality.

I am k-pop fan and Korean culture, have traveled for miles just to watch my idol perform even though the idol only performed some songs. Super Junior idols Donghae and Eunhyuk came to Indonesia as guest stars on the station’s birthday program like fresh air for us ELF, Super Junior fans, and other k-pop fans to be able to watch our favorite k-pop idols appear live. The song that was aelivered made us drift, of course when the idol was very happy to see our enthusiasm.

사진은 2019년 1월 27일 AFC 아시아축구연맹 U-23 챔피언십 결승전 직후 하노이의 모습이에요. 많은 사람들이 거리를 나와 국기를 흔들며 베트남의 결승전 진출을 기념하고 있는 모습이랍니다. 이 경기에서 베트남은 아쉽게 준우승을 했지만, 모두가 값진 은메달에 큰 찬사를 보냈지요. 이 경기는 베트남 축구의 저력을 보여준 첫 번째 경기였으며, 베트남인들 에게 박항서 감독의 이름을 각인시킨 의미있는 경기가 되었어요. 빨간 물결 속에서 간혹 하얀 태극기가 보이기도 했는데요. 한국인 감독에게 보내는 베트남인들의 사랑이 느껴지기도 했어요. 승리보다 값진 패배를 응원하는 베트남인들의 열정이 돋보이는 하노이의 모습이랍니다.

The above photo shows a street in Hanoi immediately after the final match in the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) U-23 Championship on January 27, 2019. Many Vietnamese gathered in the streets and waved their national flag to celebrate the country’s reaching of the final match. In this match, Vietnam lost and won a silver medal.

But all Vietnamese citizens applauded this outcome.

This match was the first to show the potential of Vietnamese soccer and was also meaningful in that it left a lasting impression on the Vietnamese people of Coach HangSeo Park. Within the waves of red, I could see several Korean flags.

I could also feel the love of the Vietnamese for the coach from Korea. The photo shows the passion of the Vietnamese in Hanoi cheering for a “loss” that is more valuable than any victory.

고된 업무를 마감하고 직장동료와 소주 한 잔 하며 누군가 던진 ‘여행 한 번 가자’라는 말에 경비 마련을 위한 통장 입금을 시작한지 2 년. 드디어 베트남으로 여행을 떠났습니다. 우리나라 국민에게 상당히 호의적이던 따뜻한 베트남. 많은 경험과 체험으로 한층 가까운 나라로 여겨지던 여행의 마지막 날 저녁식사 시간부터 스즈키컵 4강 경기가 시작 되었요. 호안끼엠 주변 광장에서 우리는 16년 전 대한민국 4강신화의 주역 박항서 감독이 현재 베트남 축구를 새롭게 부흥시키고 있는 현장에서 한 목소리로 응원을 했습니다. 이렇듯 베트남 사람들과 한국 사람들이 서로 아픈 과거를 잊고 오늘처럼 한목소리로 격려하며 행복했으면 합니다.

Two years passed since I started saving a travel fund with several colleagues. Once, while enjoying soju, someone said “Let’s go somewhere,” which ended up in us going to Vietnam on a package tour. Vietnam is a familiar country to Koreans that shares many national experiences with Korea. On the last day of the tour, the semi-final of the AFF Suzuki Cup started around dinner time. At the plaza near Hoan Kiem Lake, we loudly cheered on the Vietnam soccer team at the very place where Korean Coach Hang-Seo Park, who was one of coaches for the legendary semi-final of the Korean soccer team in the 2002 World Cup held 16 years ago, revived the Vietnam soccer team. I hope the Vietnamese people and Koreans have many more opportunities to forget their painful pasts while cheering together for a common cause.

작년 여름 인도네시아로 해외 교육 봉사활동을 갔을 때였습니다. SMK

Mahaputra 학생들과 처음 만나는 자리에서 우리는 서로의 문화를 나누었는 데요. 사물놀이, K-pop 등을 공연하며 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다. 이 사진은 그때의 모습을 찍은 거예요. 인도네시아 학생들이 전통 의상을 입고 화려한 춤을 보여주고 있을 때, 사물놀이 공연을 한 학생들이 나와서 그들의 춤사위를 함께 따라 추었답 니다. 반대로 우리가 사물놀이 공연을 할 때는 인도네시아 학생들이 장단에 맞춰 춤을 추기도 했어요. 춤 덕분에 모두가 하나되는 순간이었죠. ‘어떤 문화든 함께 즐기고 향유한다면 문화의 국경은 애초 없는 것이 아닐까?’ 라는 생각이 들었습니다. 사진을 보며, 저와 같은 생각이신가요?

This photo was taken while I was participating in an overseas educational volunteer project last summer in Indonesia. At the place where we first met with SMK Mahaputra students, we shared our cultures with each other. We had a wonderful time performing Udjo, Samulnori (Korean traditional percussion quartet), and K-Pop dances, during which the above photo was taken.

The Indonesian students are performing an elaborate dance while wearing traditional costumes as the Korean students who performed Samulnori come to the center and imitate the Indonesian students’ movements. When we performed Samulnori, the Indonesian students also danced to the rhythms. It was a moment in which everyone “became one” through dance.

If we can enjoy and share cultures together in this way, there may be no need for cultural divisions in the first place. After seeing this photo, do you agree?

This photo was taken in Jakarta, Indonesia. A stunning Samulnori performance was held in celebration of the 2018 Asian Games 2018. The fact that we were able to wear traditional Korean clothes for the occasion as well as play traditional Korean music was an unforgettable experience. It was exhausting, but we are very grateful to have had a chance that we may never get again. Everyone enjoyed and love Korea.

2018년 5월 19일 수원시에서 열리는 부처님 오신날 축제. 한국에서는 음력으로 부처님의 생일을 기념합니다. 전 세계 곳곳에서는 부처님의 탄생일을 기념하는 축제는 연등행사로 알려져 있습니다. 이 축제에서는 미얀마, 태국, 베트남, 캄보디아 등 많은 국가에서 한국에 일하러 온 사람 들이 일반 사람과 함께 연등행사에 참가 합니다 또한 많은 참가자들은 절에 조금씩 돈을 시주하고 연등을 걸어 놓습니다. 사람들은 연등에 자신의 이름을 적어, 마음속의 소원을 빕니다.

The city of Suwon in South Korea held a Buddha’s birthday festival on May 19, 2018.

In Korea, Buddha’s birthday is celebrated according to the lunar calendar. In most countries, Buddha’s Birthday is known as the “festival of lanterns.” In the festival in Suwon, people of many nationalities (such as Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia) who are currently working in Korea joined their Korean neighbors to parade through the city with magnificent lantern displays. Many participants also made small donations to hang their own paper lanterns in the temple complex. Participants wrote their names on their lantern and one cherished wish.

올해 3월 방콕 짜투짝 공원을 구경하던 중에 태극기가 그려져 있는 책을 들고 있는 학생을 보았습니다. 혹시 하는 마음에 국적을 물어보니 남학생은 한국 국적이었고, 여학생은 태국 사람이었어요. 고등학교 3학년인 둘은 중학생 시절 알게 되었고,지금은 다른 학교에 다닌 다고 했어요. 알고 보니 태국 거주 4년차라는 한국인 남학생이 태국 여학생 에게 한국어를 가르치는 중이었답니다. 친절하게 한국어를 가르쳐주는 남학생. 두 학생은 공부하는 내내 서로 티격태격하면서도 뭐가 그리 재미 있는지 웃음꽃이 활짝 피었답니다. 국적만 다를 뿐 가장 친한 친구사이 라는 두 학생의 모습이 너무나 순수해 보여 부러웠답니다. 둘의 우정이 변치 않기를 바랍니다.

When at Chatuchak Park in Bangkok this March, I saw two students holding a book with a drawing of the Korean flag. I asked their nationalities: the boy is Korean, and girl is Thai.

The students, who were in their third year of high school, got to know each other when they were in middle school, after which they went to different high schools. This photo shows the Korean boy, who has lived in Thailand for four years, teaching Korean to his Thai friend. The students alternately engaged in mock arguments and burst out laughing.

They said they were best friends despite their different nationalities. I envied the purity of their relationship and hope that they remain close even as adults.

사진은 경기도 파주시에 있는 말레이시아교입니다. 1960년대.일제강점기 에서 벗어난 뒤 얼마 되지 않은 당시 한국 경제는 아세안 국가보다 힘들 었다고 합니다. 이 다리는 말레이시아 정부의 자금으로 건설했다고 하네요. 한국 속의 아세안을 보여주는 또 다른 모습이 아닐까 합니다.

The above picture shows a “Malaysian bridge” in Paju, Gyeonggi-do. In the 1960s, the Korean economy was much worse than that of ASEAN countries, as it has not been long since Korea was liberated from Japanese colonial rule. This bridge was built with funds from the Malaysian government. It is an important example in Korea of our friendship with ASEAN.

떡 라이스 케익 은 설날 음력설 먹는 음식 중 하나인데, 자카르타의 한국 문화원에서는 경단과 조랭이 떡으로 2018 년 설날 음력설 을 기념했습니다. 약 100 명의 참가자를 그룹으로 나눈 다음 만드는 방법을 짧게 보여 준 후, 각 그룹에 경단과 조랭이떡 만들기 경연을 실시했습니다. 그 결과 승자는 한국 문화원에서 준 기념품을 받았습니다.

As “tteok,” or rice cakes, is one of the main foods eaten during Seol (Lunar New Year), the Korean Cultural Center in Jakarta celebrated Seollal (Lunar New Year day) in 2018 by making gyeongdan and joraengi tteok. Approximately 100 participants were divided into groups during the session, with each group asked to make gyeongdan and joraengi tteok after watching a short demonstration on how to make each type. The results were entered into a competition, where the winner received some souvenirs from the Korean Cultural Center.

Cultural Night 이라는 행사를 할 때의 모습(2016.9월) 대한민국, 캄보디아, 인도네시아, 말레이시아, 싱가포르, 태국 등 각 국 출신 학생들이 전통 복장을 입고 전통음식을 나누어 먹으며 과거와 현재, 그리고 미래를 이야기 하는 시간이었습니다. 비슷한 듯 하지만 다른, 서로 연결되어 있으면서도 자신만의 특성을 고수한 ASEAN 각 국의 전통을 느끼고, ASEAN으로서 함께 미래를 그리는 친구이자 동지, 선의의 경쟁자로서의 현재를 알아갈 수 있는 시간이었습니다. 나에게 NUS에서 보낸 2년은, 한국과 지리적으로 가깝지만 잘 몰랐던 동남아시아의 중요성을 피부로 느낄 수 있었던 소중한 시간이자 모두 한 데 어울려 즐겁게 공부하고 놀 수 있었던 행복한 시간이 었습니다. 이 사진 한 장이 보여주고 있는 것처럼!

The Cultural Night. The above picture shows the feature when holding an event of Cultural Night at National University of Singapore (NUS), a university in Singapore (September of 2016). At that time, students from Korea, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand wore their traditional costumes for each, shared their own traditional foods, and talked about past, present, and future. That was the time we could feel the traditions of each country in ASEAN which seemed similar but different and adhered to own unique characteristics even though such characteristics were connected each other. Also, we could get to know the presents of each other as friends, colleagues, and competitors with good will dreaming the future together as ASEAN people. To me, two years in NUS were so precious time which I felt the significance of Southeast Asia that is close geographically with Korea and were so happy time which I studied and played with foreign friends together. 서대문구에 있는 봉원사 경내에는 많은 연꽃이 심어져 있어 매년 연꽃이 피는 시기에 맞춰 연꽃축제를 개최하는데요. 이 연꽃축제장에 베트남 불교 신자가 방문하여 봉원사 스님으로부터 축제의 유래 등에 대하여 설명을 들은 후 합장하며 담소하고 있습니다. 연꽃축제장에 들러 사찰 경내에 독특 하게 조성된 연꽃밭을 배경으로 사진 촬영을 하기위해 들렀다가 베트남 여인과 봉원사 스님이 불교를 주제로 교류하는 장면을 담았습니다.

Within the precincts in Bongwonsa (temple), Seodaemun-gu, so many lotuses are planted and along with the time of lotus blooming, the lotus festival is held annually. Two Buddhists from Vietnam visited this lotus festival site and after hearing the explanation about the origin of festival from a monk in Bongwonsa (temple), they put their hands together and talked to each other. I visited this festival site for taking the pictures with the background of lotus field which was uniquely made within the precincts and then, took the above feature that Vietnamese women exchanged the Buddhism with a monk of Bongwonsa (temple).

인공섬 바로 옆 반포 공원에서 열린 필리핀 독립 기념일 축하 행사는 아침 일찍 성스러운 미사와 함께 시작되었으며 연설, 간단한 퍼레이드, 오락 및 공연, 재미있는 경품 추첨 행사가 늦은 오후까지 계속되었습니다. 이 퍼레이드에는 여러 필리핀 단체가 참가해 Igorot 의상, Santa Cruzan 가운, 다채로운 Masskara, Ati-Atihan 및 Kadayawan 의상을 선보였습니다. 나는 Masskara 복장을 한 참가자들과 함께 사진을 찍고 싶었지만 여기 저기 재미있는 곳을 둘러 보느라 사진 찍는 것을 잊었습니다. 또한 이 축제를 통해 매년 6월 12일에 우리의 민족적 색채를 표시하지만 이 행사에서 상징하는 자유가 공짜로 주어지지 않는다는 것을 잊지 말아야 합니다. 선조들의 삶을 희생해 얻어진 자유입니다. 6월 12 일이 아니라 언제나 기억해야 할 것이지만, 매 순간 우리는 필리핀 사람이라고 생각합니다.

The celebration of Philippines Independence Day, which was held at Banpo Park just next to the man-made floating islands, kicked off with a Holy Mass early in the morning and continued on until late afternoon with speeches, a short parade, entertainment and performances, and a raffle of fun prizes. The parade featured several Filipino organizations, including participants wearing Igorot costumes, Santa Cruzan gowns, as well as colorful Masskara, Ati-Atihan and Kadayawan costumes. I wanted to take a photo with the Masskara costumed-participants, but forgot about it with all the fun around!

Also, while we wave and display our national colors every year on June 12 through this festival, we should not forget that the freedom that it symbolizes was not handed to us for free. It is a freedom that was paid for with the lives of those who came before us— something that we should always remember, not just on June 12, but every moment we identify ourselves as Filipino.

많은 한국 사람들이 라오스에 와서 불교 사원을 방문하고 라오스의 자연 환경을 즐기며 메콩 강에서 석양을 봅니다. 한국인 관광객들은 보통 비엔 티안을 방문한 후 방비엥과 루앙프라방까지 육로 여행을 합니다. 라오족 관광객들은 한국을 방문 할 때 의례히 눈, 전통 문화, 벚꽃 나무를 보고,

K-화장품 쇼핑을 합니다. 거제도의 윈디 힐, 통영의 동피낭 벽화 마을, 여수의 오동도, 광한루원, 전주 한옥 마을을 방문하는 것도 좋아합니다.

Many Korean people come to Laos to visit Buddhist temples, enjoy Laos’ natural environment and and view the sunset at the Mekong River. Korean tourists usually visit Vientiane and then travel overland to Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang. Lao tourists also have a typical routine for when they visit South Korea, which includes an experience with snow, traditional culture, cherry blossom trees and shopping for K-cosmetics. They also enjoy visiting Windy Hill In Geoje Island, Dongpirang Mural Village in Tongyeong, Odongdo Island in Yeosu, Gwanghalluwon Garden and JeonJu Hanok Village.

처음 보는 장면은 아니었습니다.나에게 한국 태권도 공연을 보는 것은 항상 새로운 경험입니다. 이 사진은 2017년 뜨거운 여름날에 부산 국제 모임 행사에서 찍은 사진입니다. 나는 인도네시아 부스에 대한 이벤트 문서를 담당하고 있었는데 무대 앞에 앉아 공연을 보고 사진을 찍는 것이 제일 좋았습니다. 행사 중 동아 대학교 태권도팀의 태권도 공연이 가장 볼만 했습니다. 그들의 동작은 놀랄 만 했으며 그 중 가장 멋진 것은 ‘공중 차기’ 동작 이었습니다. 순식간에 공중을 날아서 송판을 강하게 발로 차 부수는 것 입니다.

It was not the first time watching Korean Taekwondo Performance for me, but it always be such a new experience watching me smerizing performance of Taekwondo. This photo was taken in 2017 in Busan Global Gathering event on hot summer day. I was charge as event document ever of our Indonesian booth and one of my favorite job is sitting in front of the stage, watch performance and take some photograph.

The Taekwondo Performance from Dong Eui University Taekwondo Demo Team is one worth to be watched back then. They did amazing kind of Taekwondo move and one of them osticonable move was ‘The Sky Kick’ move performance. Jumping to the air quickly then do a strong kick to broke the target board.

At an event called “Global Field Day,” the international students of DCU played games, including a sack race and Pull the Rope. It was really fun and very energizing. 한 여자 아이가 좋아하는 한국 드라마를 보면서 한국드라마에서 자주 볼 수 있는 라면과 다른 음식을 먹고 있습니다. 한국 드라마는 특히 인도네시아 사회 및 기타 아시아 국가에서 가장 인기 있고 가장 쉽게 접할 수 있는 오락이 되었습니다. 해외에서 한국 드라마의 인기가 높아지면서 음식과 같이 한국 문화의 여러 면을 성공적으로 홍보할 수 있는 중요한 수단이 되었습니다.

A girl is eating ramyeon and some other foods that she often sees in Korean dramas (K-drama) while watching a favorite K-drama. Korean drama has become one of the most popular and easily-accessed forms of entertainment, especially for Indonesian society and other ASEAN countries. The increasing popularity of Korean dramas abroad is a key method of successfully promoting various aspects of Korean culture, such as food.

태국 음식은 전 세계 어느 나라에서나 맛볼 수 있는 인기 있는 음식입니다. 우리 가족이 태국 여행을 하면서 꼭 해보고 싶었던 것이 태국 전통음식을 직접 체험하면서 만드는 것이었는데요. 여행을 떠나기 전 미리 예약을 하고 간 방콕의 태국 전통음식 실습장에서 양꿍과 팟타이를 만들어 보았습니다. 친절한 강사님이 하나하나 자세 하게 실연으로 보여주면서 가르쳐주었는데요. 저희 가족 말고도 홍콩에서 온 가족들과 함께 재미있게 음식을 만들어 보았습니다. 시장에서 장도 보고 음식도 만들어 보면서 태국에 대한 이해를 조금 더 높일 수 있었어요.

Thai foods are popular and can usually be found in any country in the world. What my family wanted to do during a trip to Thailand was to experience cooking traditional Thai foods.

At the institution we reserved in advance before leaving for the trip, we learned to make Tom Yum Goong and pad thai. The instructor (who was very friendly and patient) taught us how to make each dish through a personal demonstration. We learned together with a family from Hong Kong. I came to understand Thailand better while buying the ingredients for the food from the market and the actual cooking process.

올겨울 태국으로 여행을 갔어요. 사진은 한국어로 진행하는 투어로 아유 타야 지역을 여행했을 때 찍은 것 입니다. 배를 타고 이동하는 도중에 태국이 노을이 아름답기로 유명한 나라임을 보여주듯, 노을 지는 모습이 너무 아름다웠어요. 한국에서는 배를 타고 이렇게 아름다운 노을을 보기가 힘들기에 모두가 사진을 찍느라 열심이었죠. 저는 이렇게 태국의 아름다움을 찍고 있는 한국 여행객들을 사진으로 담았는데요. 태국이라는 공간과 그 공간을 담는 한국 관광객의 모습에서 한국과 아세안이 어우러지는 모습을 볼 수 있었습니다.

This winter, I traveled to Thailand. The above picture shows the Ayutthaya region, which we visited during a tour with a Korean guide. While traveling by boat, we learned why Thailand is famous for its beautiful sunsets. As it is hard to see such beautiful sunsets from a boat in Korea, all of the tourists from Korea took pictures.

I, on the other hand, took a picture of the Korean tourists who were taking pictures of Thailand’s beauty. I could see the harmony between Korea and ASEAN from the inclusion of Koreans in a Thai space.

Annyeonghaseyo! I was so happy in this photo. This photo was taken at Ihwa Mural Village in Jongno-gu, Seoul. I was mesmerized by the murals in the village: I could see how the village became so famous. I really enjoyed roaming around Ihwa Mural Village while taking too many photo breaks. This village shows the creativity and cooperative spirit of Koreans. This is definitely a must-visit spot in Seoul. Kamsahamnida! Happy travels!

술만 취하면 ‘뀌년~ 뀌년~’ 인생 중 가장 행복했던 시간이 베트남에서 참전용사로 지낸 36개월이라던 아빠가 떠나시고, 나도 모르는 이끌림에 하노이 한국국제학교에 지원하여 교사로 지낸지 3년째. 어쩌면 내 인생 중 가장 행복했던 시간도 혹시 이곳 베트남에서의 지금 이 순간일까요? 두 딸과 아들, 남편과 함께 뀌년을 찾았습니다. 가족들과 함께 베트남 구석구석 느끼며, 알아가며 이제는 저 또한 아빠 같은 이 나라를 사랑하지 않을 수 없었습니다. ‘콤싸오 괜찮아요 ’ 문화가 싫다가도, 콤싸오 문화가 나도 살기 편한. 어쩌면 남들을 의식하지 않고 그냥 내 방식대로 살 수 있는 나라가 베트남 같습니다. 불가능할 듯한데 가능하고, 가능한데 불가능한 이곳 베트남. 쎄마니오토바이 같은 날새로 빠른 젊음, 패기. 남들을 의식하지 않고 사는 용기. 새벽 5시면 모두가 일어나는 부지런함. 어마무시한 장례문화. 세숫대야에 음식을 해먹는 융통성, 그리고 그들의 미소. 아직도 베트남에 대해 알아가고 싶어요. 사진은 우연히 들른 참파 유적지에서 남편과 아들이 찍어준 저와 딸입니다. 낯선 모녀 여행객의 모습이 담겼네요. 뀌년에서~

Whenever inebriated, my father always said, “Qui Nhon~ Qui Nhon.” After my father, who always said that the happiest time of his life was the 36 months he spent stationed in Vietnam, passed away, I visited Qui Nhon together with my two daughters, son, and husband. As I experienced various places in Vietnam with my family, I could not help but fall in love with the country, like my father had. I used to hate the “khong sao (it’s alright)” culture, but I’m beginning to think that such culture may be a better way for me to live. I also think that Vietnam embodies this mindset very well. In Vietnam, there is a notion that impossible things can become possible and that things that are possible may actually be impossible. Young people on their fast-moving xe máy (bike) symbolize courage that does not worry excessively about what others think. I want to learn more about a culture in which “diligence” means waking up at 5:00 am and that has a tremendous funeral culture, flexibility that permits cooking with a washbowl, and people who seem to always be smiling. The above is a picture of me and my daughter taken by my husband at a historic site of the Champa Dynasty, where we dropped by without having planned to. The picture shows a strange mother & daughter tourist duo at Qui Nhon.

옛날부터 우리나라는 식사자리에 많은 의미를 두었습니다. 정성스레 음식을 만들어 맛있게 먹고, 서로 담소를 나누며 식사시간을 보내곤 했지요. 식사를 하며 사람들은 정情 을 나누었어요. 현재 우리나라는 아세안 국가들과 많은 교류를 하고 있는데요, 특히 젊은 세대의 교류가 활발한 편입니다. 아세안 국가의 청년들은 한국으로 유학을 많이 오는 편인데요, 이들 청년들과 한국의 청년들이 국경을 넘는 우정을 나누고 있지요. 그 중에서 한국인과 인도네시아인의 국경을 넘은 우정을 영상으로 소개합니다. 한국으로 유학 온 인도네시아 학생 데위는 언어의 장벽에 막혀 적응에 어려움을 겪고 있었어요. 그러던 중 우연히 여주라는 한국 학생을 만나게 되죠. 따뜻한 마음에는 차이가 없음을 알게 된 둘은 친해지고, 덕분에 데위는 한국생활 적응이 한결 쉬워졌답니다. 데위는 감사한 마음을 담아 고국의 음식을 만들어 친구들과 함께 나누어 먹었어요. 데위와 여주의 관계처럼 한국과 아세안의 시민 모두가 따뜻한 정情 을 나누며 하나가 되기를 바라는 마음으로 이 영상을 만들게 되었답니다.

Koreans have traditionally stress the importance of the dinner meal. Foods are prepared based on love for one’s family, which are relished by family members, who enjoy animated conversation during the meal that shows the strength of their love for one another.

Currently, Korea is engaged in active exchanges with ASEAN countries. In particular, exchanges are most active among the young generation, as can be seen from youths in ASEAN countries going to Korea for university. My video shows the friendship between a Korean and Indonesian that far transcends cultural differences.

Dewi, an Indonesian student who came to Korea for study abroad, had difficulty in adjusting to Korea due to the language barrier. Dewi then meets Yeo-Ju, a Korean student, by chance. They become friends, and the relationship enables Dewi to adapt to life in Korea. As a show of appreciation for her Korean friend, Dewi cooks an Indonesian meal to share. I created this video with the hope that all citizens in Korea and ASEAN countries can enjoy tightly-knit international relations, just like the friendship between Dewi and Yeo-Ju.

베트남 여행 중 우연히 마을 잔치에 초대받은 적이 있었습니다. 사람들이 한 부부에게 선물을 주고 절을 받는 모습이 결혼식 폐백 같기도 하고, 아이가 있는 것을 보면 돌잔치인가 싶기도 했죠. 무슨 이유였든 잔치는 무척 흥겨웠어요. 상을 가득 채운 맛깔스러운 음식과 너나없이 주고받는 술잔들. 처음에는 어른과 청년이 나뉘어 각자의 자리에서 잔치를 즐겼지만, 시간이 흐르자 모두 함께 어깨 춤을 들썩이며 흥을 나누는 자리가 되더군요. 이 모든 모습이 어린 시절 경험했던 우리네 마을 잔치와 같았답니다. 무엇보다도 낯선 이방인인 내게 스스럼없이 술잔과 미소를 건네는 그들의 모습 에서 베트남 사람의 진한 정이 느껴졌어요. 보통 한국인을 ‘정(情)’의 민족이라고 하잖아요. 그런데, 한 베트남 마을 사람들이 내게 전해준 정은 그런 우리가 느끼 기에도 충분히 따뜻했답니다. 함께 정을 나누는 민족. 어쩌면 우리는 아주 가까운 사이가 아닐까요?

When I was traveling in Vietnam, I was given an impromptu invitation to a village feast, which seemed to be wedding feast based on how people gave presents to one particular couple. Although I’m still not sure what type of event it was, it was definitely an exciting experience! The table was covered with delicious foods and wine glasses. At first, the elders and youths associated mostly among themselves at their seats. But as time passed, everyone started dancing and enjoying the feast together. It reminded me of similar occasions in my childhood home.

Everyone was friendly to me, a complete stranger, as I felt from the frequent toasts offered. People say Koreans have “jeong” (loosely translated as “mutual affection”): my trip to Vietnam showed me that the sharing of affection and goodwill may not be limited to Koreans.

The Reason Why Vietnamese Girls Love Korea

안녕하세요. 저는 베트남에 거주하고 있는 영화학도입니다. 저는 지난 1월 부터 베트남 현지 사람들과 문화교류를 활발히 하고 있었는데요. 그 중 베트남 내 한국에 대한 관심이 어느 정도인지 구체적으로 궁금해졌습니다. 그래서 저는 하노이 외국어대학교의의 한국어학과에 방문하여 학생들에게 ‘한국어를 전공한 이유’, ‘한국에 대한 이미지’, ‘좋아하는 한국문화’라는 질문을 했습니다. 20여 명의 학생들이 인터뷰에 응해주고, 심지어 제 영상에 베트남어 자막을 만들어주기도 했어요. 덕분에 저는 그 친구들과 더욱 친해질 수 있었습니다. 영상에는 학생들이 이야기하는 한국어를 전공한 이유와 칠판을 가득 채운 한국 가수, 그리고 한국어로 된 그들만의 구호가 담겼는데요. 직접 영상을 만들며 베트남의 젊은 세대들이 갖는 한국에 대한 관심이 정말 크다는 것을 느낄 수 있었어요. 제가 인터뷰한 학생들은 주로 1~2학년이었음에도 한국어 능력이 수준급인 것이 놀라웠고, 제게는 아세안 속 한국에 대한 자부심이 생겼습니다. 앞으로도 한-베 문화교류에 앞장서겠습니다

Hello! I am a film studies student living in Vietnam. Since last January, I have been learning about local Vietnamese culture. One day, I became curious about how Vietnamese people view Korea. I visited the Korean Department of Hanoi Foreign Language University to ask students some questions, such as reasons for majoring in Korean, images of Korea, and favorite parts of Korean culture. About 20 students responded to the interviews and happily volunteered to write Vietnamese subtitles for this video. Needless to say, I quickly became close with the students.

The video shows the reasons why Vietnamese students major in Korean. I think the reason is most simple embodied in the writing of Korean slogans for Korean singers on the chalkboard. Throughout filming, I could feel that the young generation of Vietnam has many thoughts about Korea.

I was also struck by excellent Korean speaking skills of the interviewees, even though they were mostly freshmen and sophomores. It made me realize that Korea has a higher standing in ASEAN countries than we imagined. In the future, I hope to assume a more active role in cultural exchange between Korea and Vietnam.

Inevitable differences add even more spellbinding charm to each of these 12 nations. Despite the contrasts, there is respect and efforts to harmonize these differences.

파란색, 노란색, 빨간색. 우리는 이 3가지 색을 일상생활에서 볼 수 있는 색상조합의 주요 원천으로 알고 있습니다. 이 세 가지 색상은 밝기, 평온함, 그리고 가장 중요하게는 삶의 다양한 색조와 색상의 아름다움을 표현합니다. 저는 이 색상들에 관심을 두고 비디오 작업의 중심 테마로 삼았습니다. 이 작업은 한국과 필리핀의 경이로운 거리 풍경을 통해 양국이 파랑, 노랑, 빨강색들을 자신의 문화에 어떻게 적용하고 있는지를 관찰한 것입니다. 이러한 것들을 통해서 우리는 각자의 고유성에도 불구하고 유사성이 얼마나 강한지도 볼 수 있습니다. 화합은 역동적인 기본색에서 뿐만 아니라 양국의 평등성을 통해 발생합니다. 한국의 영향력은 이제 필리핀 사람들의 삶에 크게 작용하고 있습니다. 또한 필리핀 국기와 한국의 삼색 태극기에 나타 나는 파랑, 노랑, 빨강은 국가의 정치적 정체성을 의미하기도 합니다.

Blue, yellow, and red. Everyone knows these as the primary sources of any color combination that we see in our everyday lives. The three colors bring out the brightness, calmness, and most importantly the beauty of life’s varied shades and hues. I focused on these colors and made them the central theme of the video. Featuring the wondrous streets and sceneries of both South Korea and the Philippines, the video is an observation of how both nations incorporate blues, yellows, and reds into their cultures. It is through these that we can see how, despite the existence of uniqueness, there is a strong connection in their similarities. Unity arises not only through the vibrant primary colors but also the parallelisms of both countries, wherein the Korean influence is now heavily integrated in the lives of Filipinos. Blue, yellow and red also signify the countries’ political identities, appearing in the Philippine flag and Korea’s tricolored taegeukgi.

저희는 미얀마에서 5개월간 유치원 선생님으로 봉사활동을 한 대학생들입니다. 한국으로 돌아가기 전 마지막으로 아이들의 부모님을 초청해 학예회를 진행했어요. 우리가 고른 음악은 ‘상어 가족’. 아빠 상어 뚜루뚜루루... 엄마 상어 뚜루뚜루루... 빌보드차트에 오를 정도로 세계적으로 유명해진 ‘상어가족’은 미얀마의 어린 아이들도 가장 좋아하는 동요랍니다. 한국에서 온 선생님들과 함께 아이들은 부모님께 상어가족 춤을 선보였는데요. 평소에는 막춤을 출 정도로 좋아하는 동요이지만, 부모님 앞이어선지 바짝 긴장한 아이들이 귀엽기만 하네요.

We are university students in Korea who did volunteer work in Myanmar for five months as kindergarten teachers. Before returning to Korea, students performed a play for their parents. Our choice for the play’s theme was “Shark Family,” an animated song that is popular not only in Korea but worldwide. Daddy shark doo doo doo doo doo..., mommy shark doo doo doo doo doo.... “Shark Family,” which was even recently included in the Billboard Hot 100, is a children’s song that our students in Myanmar instantly loved. In the video, the children perform the “Shark Family” dance together with their Korean teachers for their parents. They liked the song so much that they frequently broke out into impromptu performances during the day, but they got nervous about performing in front of others!

저는 홍대에서 한류를 가장 확실히 경험했습니다. 거의 대부분의 상점 에서는 K- pop 히트 곡들이 흘러나왔습니다. 또한 주변거리에선 많은 댄스 쇼와 라이브 음악공연이 있었습니다. 그들 행사 중 댄스 쇼에 참여 하기도 했습니다. 저는 조금 수줍어했지만 정말 즐거웠고 잊을 수없는 경험이었습니다. 잠깐이었지만 한국문화의 일부가 된 것처럼 느껴졌고, 내 자신이 누구인지 알 수 있었습니다. 한국에 감사드립니다. 한국을 그리워 할 것입니다.

I had my strongest experience of the Korean Hallyu wave in Hongdae. Almost every shop there plays K-pop hits. There were also many dance shows and live music performances.

I participated in one of the dances. I felt a little shy, but it was very fun and definitely an unforgettable experiences. I felt like I became a part of Korean culture, if only for a short while, and that I was accepted for who I am. Thank you Korea! I will miss you!

많은 사람들이 여가와 휴식을 위해 여행을 떠납니다. 잠시라도 현실에서 벗어 나고 싶은 사람들은 해외여행을 꿈꾸죠. 문화체육관광부의 2017년 조사에 따르면, 해외여행자수가 증가세에 있으며, 그 중 ‘여가 및 휴가’ 목적이 88 % 를 차지한다고 해요. 반면, 해외여행을 떠나지 못하는 이유로는 ‘여가 시간 및 마음의 여유 부족’이라는 이유를 댄 사람이 50%나 되었다고 합니다. 시간적 여유의 부족 등 현실적인 이유로 사람들은 해외여행을 떠나도 우리나라 주변의 가까운 여행지를 많이 찾는 것 같습니다. 아세안 문화 특유의 여유와 힐링을 누리며 자신을 다시 채워 돌아가는 여행객들을 많이 봤어요. ‘아세안 문화를 통해 힐링하라!’ 제 영상의 콘셉트입니다. 제가 만든 영상에는 한국에서 찾아볼 수 있는 아세안의 일상이 담겨 있습니다. 라탄으로 만든 공예품과 휴양지에서 자주 볼 수 있는 수경식물들, 베트남에서 유명한 코코넛 커피와 싱가포르와 말레이시아에서 자주 먹는 카야잼, 태국의 풍경이 담긴 마그넷 등을 소재로 펼쳐지는 영상을 보며, 사람들이 아세안의 여유를 함께 느끼기를 바랐어요. 제 영상을 보고 아세안을 다녀온 사람들이 그때의 기억을 되살려 마음속의 상처와 스트레스를치유했으면좋겠습니다.쉽게접하고 가장 떠나기 쉬운 우리 이웃 나라들의 풍경. 잘 찾아보면 우리 주변에도 많답니다.

Most people travel for leisure and to relax. Those who wish to avoid the roughness of reality (even for a short period of time) wish to go overseas. According to a survey

by Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2017, the number of Korean travelers to foreign countries has increased, with 88 percent listing their reason for travel as “leisure and rest.” Fifty percent of respondents named “insufficient leisure time and too much work” as the reason for not travelling to foreign countries. Due to harshly realistic reasons, such as insufficient time, Koreans usually travel to the closest neighboring countries. But I saw that many Korean travelers truly enjoyed the relaxation and rejuvenation of their experiences in ASEAN countries, which eventually became the concept of my video (“Healing through ASEAN cultures!”) This video shows the daily lives of people in ASEAN countries that most Koreans are unable to see for themselves. I hope it shows Korean viewers the relaxing experience of ASEAN countries through the rattan handicrafts, hydroponic plants (which are common in most destinations), coconut coffee (which is famous in Vietnam), Kaya jam (which is popular in Singapore and Malaysia), and magnets of Thai landscapes. I also hope those who have already visited ASEAN countries can relieve the stresses of daily life by being reminded of their travels through my video of the landscapes of countries that are actually quite geographically accessible from Korea.

‘Makan lah’는 말레이어로 ‘먹어라’라는 뜻입니다. 저와 제 친구들이 살고 있는 말레이시아는 다양한 문화와 인종이 공존하는 곳이며, 새로운 변화의 지역이기도 합니다. 요즘 시대에는 어느 나라에서든 다양한 인종과 문화가 공존할 텐데요. ‘아세한 속의 한국. 한국 속의 아세안’ 이라는 제목처럼 말레이시아 국제 학교에 재학중인 저와 제 친구들은 그런 어울림으로 함께 지내고 있어요. 영상을 만들 때 우리는 음식을 통해 각기 다른 문화를 흥미롭게 접하고 또 이해해가며 어우러지는 모습을 담고 싶었습니다. 음식에는 행복함을 주고, 함께 나누 면서 끈끈한 정을 느끼게 해주는 힘이 있기 때문입니다. 저희도 이 영상을 만들면서 각기 다른 모습의 친구들과 그 친구들의 문화가 담긴 음식들을 공유했는데요. 그 과정 속에서 너무나 즐거운 경험과 함께하는 기쁨을 느꼈습니다. 이런 저희와 같은 마음으로 많은 이들이 공감하는 영상이길 바랍니다.

“Makan lah” is a Malay phrase that means “eat it.” Malaysia, where my friends and I live and attend the International School of Malaysia, is a country where various cultures and races coexist. It is also a country that is constantly changing. Like the title of this exhibition (“Korea in ASEAN, ASEAN in Korea”), my friends and I have multiple nationalities but get along really well!

When creating this video, we wanted to highlight the experience of accessing a different culture especially through food, which has the power to make people happy and bond with one another. The video shows the ethnic diversity of my group of friends as well as the diversity of culture. Filming was fulfilling and enjoyable for everyone involved. I hope this video shows as many people as possible that bonds of friendship are both ordinary and remarkable.

가믈란은 전 세계적으로 유명한 인도네시아의 전통 악기입니다. 이 비디오는

2017년부터 한국에서 가믈란을 가르치고 있는 인도네시아의 가믈란 교사 Sugiarto에 관한 이야기입니다. Sugiarto는 한국에서 가장 높은 건물 롯데 월드타워에서 가믈란 공연을 하였고, 한국의 국회에서도 공연을 하였습니다.

Sugiarto는 현재 서울예술대학의 월드뮤직 프로그램에서 가믈란을 가르 치고 있습니다. 그는 K-팝이 인도네시아에서 잘 알려진 것처럼 인도네시아 문화의 중요한 부분인 가믈란을 한국 사람들에게 더 잘 알려주기를 원합니다.

This video is about Sugiarto, an Indonesian gamelan teacher who has been teaching gamelan in Korea since 2017. Gamelan is a set of traditional Indonesian musical instruments that is famous worldwide. Sugiarto was the first person to give a gamelan performance at Lotte World Tower, the highest building in Korea. He has also presented gamelan at Korea’s National Assembly. Sugiarto now teaches gamelan in the World Music Program at Seoul Institute of the Arts. He wants to promote gamelan, an important part of Indonesian culture, better known to the South Korean people, just as K-pop is well-known in Indonesia.
