I am delighted to present the ASEAN Culture House (ACH) Special Exhibition “Colors of Asia, Revisited – the Case of ASEAN and Korea.” Ever since its establishment in 1991, the Korea Foundation (KF) has carried out a variety of initiatives worldwide including the sponsorship of cultural events and exchange programs. These activities are aligned with our vision of connecting people and bridging the world, which is enshrined as the KF’s motto. The ACH, as one of the key outcomes of the 2014 ASEAN–ROK Commemorative Summit held in Busan, had its grand opening on September 1, 2017, with the Korea Foundation awarded the honor of operating this meaningful institution. The ACH is striving to become a lively platform to enhance Koreans’ understanding of the cultures and societies of ASEAN, while promoting mutual awareness and friendship between the peoples of ASEAN and Korea by fostering people–to–people, cultural and academic exchanges. In recent years, the peoples of Korea and ASEAN have grown ever closer. Indeed, the ASEAN region is now Korea’s number one travel destination, with around 6.4 million Koreans visiting one or more of the 10 ASEAN countries each year. The people of ASEAN too have increasingly ventured to our shores, with about 2.2 million visiting Korea over the same period. In order to nurture a peaceful and cooperative relationship between Korea and ASEAN, mutual understanding and continuous exchanges between our peoples are of key importance.

Complementing the designs of Mr. Salud are the works of Korean designer Mr. Jean Youn Lee. Visitors are sure to enjoy the way in which these two artists blend contemporary aesthetics with traditional elements as showcased in this exhibition. We understand this represents the first time that this particular collection is on display outside of the Philippines, representing a great honor for all of us at the ACH. I would like to express our most sincere gratitude to the two designers, Mr. Renee Salud and Mr. Jean Youn Lee, as well as to His Excellency Mr. Raul Hernandez and our guest curator Ms. Juri Cho for making this exhibition possible. I extend my appreciation also to the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, the NCCA, the Philippine Embassy in Korea, the National Museum of Singapore, National Heritage Board, Asian Civilizations Museum in Singapore and the many other institutions in ASEAN and Korea which contributed to the successful opening of “Colors of Asia, Revisited – the Case of ASEAN and Korea.” I sincerely hope that this exhibition will contribute to further enhancing mutual understanding between Korea and ASEAN.

In September last year, we witnessed the opening of the ASEAN Culture House. It is one of the concrete outcomes of the commitments made during the 2014 ASEAN–ROK Commemorative Summit and it has the distinction of being the first of its kind among the dialogue partners of ASEAN. Indeed, its establishment underscores much of South Korea’s desire to forge closer relations with its ASEAN friends. And with President Moon Jae–in’s new policy manifesto of elevating the relations of South Korea with its neighbors in the South, particularly ASEAN, we can expect the ACH to play a central role in expanding the already dynamic socio–cultural cooperation between our countries. This past year, we bore witness to the various activities which ACH undertook in pursuit of their mandate of enhancing Koreans’ understanding of the cultures and societies of ASEAN countries and promoting mutual awareness and friendship between the peoples of ASEAN and South Korea. For instance, the inaugural exhibition, the “ASEAN Ways of Life” permanent exhibition, shows the public a glimpse of the influences of various natural resources on the lives and cultures of the ASEAN people. In addition, the ACH has been active showcasing the different facets of ASEAN culture and tradition through culinary lessons, film screenings, musical festivals, special exhibitions, and other activities. Tonight, we are about to unveil a new exhibition that will showcase world–class creations of renowned fashion designers that utilize premier traditional textiles from South Korea and the ten ASEAN member states. Furthermore, what makes this exhibition particularly special for the Philippines is the fact that it will highlight the artistry of one of Philippines’ celebrated fashion designers, Mr. Renee Salud. It is with much pride to say that through this exhibition, we will be able to see that Mr. Salud has set the mark of indigenous ASEAN and Korean fabrics for international fashion standards through his masterful artistry and his focus on intricate masterpieces.

At this juncture, allow me to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the ASEAN Culture House for organizing this very meaningful special exhibition. Tonight, we will see how different cultures, when meshed together, can turn into something beautiful and remarkable. Indeed, culture can teach us that there is harmony in diversity. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of the team of the ASEAN Culture House. It is through their collective efforts that this exhibition was made possible. Let me also extend my gratitude to the Korea Foundation, led by Ambassador Sihyung Lee, and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their generous support to the ASEAN Culture House. Further, let me take this opportunity to congratulate Ambassador Seong–in Kim on his recent appointment as Korea Foundation’s Executive Vice President. In closing, let me say that the Philippines, along with the other ASEAN Member States, looks forward to collaborating closely with the ASEAN Culture House. Next year, as we celebrate 30 years of dialogue partnership between ASEAN and South Korea, it is my fervent hope that our relations will reach greater heights as we continue with initiatives that promote better understanding between our peoples. Thank you very much. Kamsahamnida.

The Colors of Asia, Revisited –The Case of ASEAN and Korea exhibition celebrates the first anniversary of the opening of ASEAN Culture House. Costumes from the ASEAN region and Korea will be displayed as “poems” composed of “lights and colors,” inspiring multi–layered interpretations and sentiments related to the history of costumes and textiles. By doing so, the exhibition aims to broaden cultural horizons beyond costumes. Renee Salud, one of the most famous fashion designers of the Philippines, created his collection with traditional textiles donated from different countries in the Asia–Pacific region. This exhibition predominantly presents those costumes of his collection that were made with textiles from the ASEAN region and Korea. The traditional textiles that represent each country are reinterpreted and reinvented in the hands of skilled designers into new silhouettes and aesthetics. We do not only exhibit carefully selected costumes, but along with them, we also display a video from a fashion show, archives, moving images and installations of textiles and lights to vividly convey the creation of this collection. In addition, the exhibition presents Korean designer Lee Jean Youn’s costumes and traditional textiles which started from basic elements, such as elegant lines, delicate textures and fine colors. Not satisfied with a mere reproduction of the past in modern times, he combines in them the new craftsmanship and methodology of contemporary haute couture fashion and international taste.

By exploring ASEAN costumes, their splendid colors, composition, and mode of wearing, the different proportions and styles compared to Korean clothing, as well as the layered approach are all providing interesting insights to us. However, the cultural history of the ASEAN region, its traditions and modernity, and its costumes – these three concepts have been consistently restructured over thousands of years, and are open to endless changes in production and consumption. Therefore, one should be careful not to regard ASEAN costumes merely as conventional traditions

or modernized fashion spectacle. Instead, one should examine the symbolism embedded in the geometric patterns embroidered on the surface of the colorful fabrics produced in the ASEAN region, and try to grasp their invisible historicity and contemporary culture. Though not readily apparent, threads and fabrics, traditional handicraft and the history of joint labor, the creativity of the nameless, and the ontological value of the clothes that went through several stages of cultural transformation represent important elements that make this exhibition particularly meaningful. Accordingly, this exhibition will ask new questions by following the intuition and interpretation of modern day artisans who are present in the form of designers, and tracing the points where the pedigree and heritage of images gather and scatter in their hands. Accordingly, this exhibition will ask new questions by following the intuition and interpretation of modern day artisans who are present in the form of designers, and tracing the points where the pedigree and heritage of images gather and scatter in their hands. Revisit, that is, the process of re–visiting, re–interpreting and re–imagining, does not require the existing collection to be displayed in the same way, but rather, becomes the most basic condition of cultural production that continues the journey of the exhibition. The surfaces and the undersides of fabrics, the history of making clothes, and the daring ways in which they were created all provide multi–layered devices to convey the intentions and interpretations of the producers to the audiences who are potential consumers. On the stage where the clothes are placed and hung, the audience enters into a space where they can imagine how the clothes were interpreted and made. They enter into the fullness of the colors that permeate the glow of the air and the heat of the earth.

Renee Salud

Designer's Greetings

First and foremost, I am glad that the collection from the fashion show “Colors of Asia–Pacific” and myself are part of this meaningful exhibition to celebrate the first anniversary of opening of the ASEAN Culture House. I would like to convey my sincere congratulations to the ACH and I wish this venue a bright future in the years ahead. It is my great honor and privilege to represent my people and our craft. The Philippines and the Republic of Korea stand side by side as bastions of high art, culture and tradition, and it is with this deep sense of gratitude that joined the opening ceremony of this exhibition. If you would kindly indulge me, I will humbly introduce myself. My name is Renee Salud, I am a Filipino fashion designer and cultural ambassador of my country. Since I was a young boy in a small town in the Southern Luzon province of Batangas, I have always had a keen eye for the sensibilities of my profession. When I moved to Manila in the – well, let’s just say, before the Beatles came to Manila, I enrolled in a fine arts program at one of the country’s premier universities. However, due to the financial constraints, I was forced to drop out of university and work to help support my family of eight siblings. I worked odd jobs – as a stocks person, buyer, sourcing person, et cetera, just to make ends meet. Though they were odd jobs, they were always within the industry I have always loved. Slowly but surely, I worked my way up the echelons of the fashion industry, dressing the likes of former Philippine first lady Ming Ramos and other members of the uppermost social strata. And yet, if you were to ask me what the secret to success is, you would be surprised to learn that my answer would not be ‘talent.’ Rather, I always say that the secret to my success is that I have always been faithful to my roots. From the very beginning, I endeavored to fuse modern styles with very traditional sensibilities. From the very inception of my career, I distinguished myself as a truly Filipino designer by refusing to simply echo and mimic the runways of Paris, Milan and New York. Instead, I

34

understood that in order to become successful, I had to be who I am and be faithful to what my culture represents. Thus, I have always used traditional Philippine fabrics such as indigenous materials like pineapple and banana fibers. I sourced through all four corners of my beautiful country in search of traditional Philippine weave patterns such as the Pinilian pattern of the Ilocos Region, the Bontoc weave of the Mountain Province, the Saputangan tapestry weave of the Yakans, the Mabal Tabih of the Blaans, the Bagobo Inabal of Bagobo and Manobo, or the T’nalak of the T’bolis, and some of these are on display here. I must admit that these weaves became my vehicles to success, a means to distinguish my craft from my contemporaries. And yet, the success has bestowed upon me the great and awesome responsibility of not simply showcasing these weaves but to also perpetuate them for prosperity. With the success comes the recognition that these weaves are beautiful and essentializing representations of my country and its peoples. Through these particular weaves, we can observe and sense and appreciate centuries of stories from the ASEAN region and the Republic of Korea that people from these countries have passed on from one generation to another. By showcasing them in this exhibition and by continuing to travel the world to present them on the world stage, I wish to do my part in not just preserving them, like a dying art, but to find new ways to use them in modern creations. What use would these fabrics have within the hallowed walls of museums. We need to embrace them, use them and recreate them for our children and their children. For through these textiles, we tell the story of our people. We pass on our wisdom to the next inhabitants of our proud nation. And through my creations, I stand before you in this exhibition as humble representative of that culture. Once again, I would like to convey my gratitude to the Korea Foundation and the ASEAN Culture House for their cooperation. I hope that cultural exchanges between Korea and ASEAN will become even livelier going forward.

Introduction

Renee Salud is both a fashion designer and cultural producer who is considered an icon of the Philippine fashion industry. He has made invaluable contributions to the development and promotion of the Philippine fashion industry, effectively launching it on the global market. A trailblazer for Philippine fashion, he actively uses materials in his shows to increase the presence of uniquely Philippine fashion on the global stage. This can be attributed to his affection for the Philippines. Salud has a strong sense of pride for traditional and unique Philippine fabrics, and reincorporates them in a more modern way, producing creations with distinctive colors. His fashion couture reflects influences from the Philippine’s cultures, particularly their unique and splendid colors and patterns, as well as traditional accessories from region all over the Philippine archipelago. Witnessing numerous technical developments in today’s fashion world, Renee Salud believes fusion to be the new trend. Accordingly, his creations are a fusion of classic and contemporary elements. According to his own words, his creations are “culturally hip.” As a result, his dresses aim timeless beauty, while at the same, they connect naturally to contemporary trends and reveal a beauty that goes beyond the Philippines, impressing people around the world. In all his fashion shows, Renee Salud tries new methods to seamlessly blend fabrics and embroidery, contrasting and bold colors and reinterpreting traditional Philippine attires. Salud’s designs, which feature beads and traditional fabrics, have been exhibited around the world, including in Tokyo, Taipei, Seville, at the Caribbean Expo and the Philippines.

For the last 40 years, the driving force behind his career in the fashion industry has been the passion and affection for his country. His vision is to continuously create new pieces using traditional elements, and he still draws motivation from the Philippines and its people. His idea of a “Philippine Tapestry” is the result of his vision and inspiration.

Flora and fauna found in traditional textiles from each region are extracted and magnified, to highlight the iconography and symbolism of the motifs. Land and aquatic animals, and plants, both real and mythological can be found in ASEAN textiles, some of which are similar to in Korean textile motifs, and others from completely different ecosystems, such as tropical plants. Subtle movements are added to the traditional motifs to strike a chord with the contemporary viewers.

Weaving Landscape

Weaving Landscape, consists of 5–channel videos and 5 light boxes covered with 5 pieces of textiles. Traditional South East Asian fabrics are categorized by the method of creation, and are edited in a modern light. Batik prints, embroidery, bead work, and dying as well as the vertical and horizontal elements of textile are reinterpreted as diagrams, and presented with a sense of speed. Most of the weaving is done by the female work force in most countries, and the animation with repetitive motion depict their hand movements. Korean traditional fabrics such as moshi (모시, ramie), and sambe (삼베, hemp) placed over light boxes are interspersed among the 5 videos, intermingling Korean and ASEAN textiles, as well as the authentic and reinterpreted textiles together.

Lee Jean Youn

Designer's Greetings

As a Korean designer, I am delighted to be a part of this special exhibition, “Colors of Asia, Revisited – the Case of ASEAN and Korea,” held in celebration of the first anniversary of the opening of the ASEAN Cultural House. It is indeed my honor to collaborate with the prestigious Philippine designer Renee Salud. It has long been my goal to elegantly capture the cautious beauty of Korean women in my designs. I tried to pay tribute to the image of a Korean woman resplendent in her hanbok with one hand on her jacket tie and the other resting gently at her side. It was the changing shadows cast by the light piercing the ivory hanji paper of a serene hanok home that inspired me in my work. Just as the subtle shifts in light play tricks with the shadows cast, I created numerous drapes and pin tucks of different lengths in silk organza. Light and color, the foundation of this exhibition, is the essence of my work. Though the light, shadow, color and layering of my work is different from Mr. Salud’s dress made of fine Korean gauze, our works coexist in perfect harmony. I believe this exhibition has been a wonderful opportunity to communicate with each other through the medium of fashion. Though there are countless ways to present fashion, nothing compares with seeing the garments worn in person, brought to life through motion. I hope to be a part of future projects cooperating and developing strong ties with designers from ASEAN countries. I wish to convey my deep gratitude to everyone at the Korea Foundation and the ASEAN Culture House for their contributions, and I offer my best wishes on the occasion of this first anniversary.

소개

Introduction

Fashion designer Lee Jean Youn, who reinterprets the beauty and sentiment of Korean traditions in a modern way, is recognized both at home and abroad as a designer of women’s wear. His principle motivation toward his works would fall into two elements: first, his active attitude to the limitations he encounters from time to time in the real world as a young designer and second, his continuous research and practice to use traditional Korean fabrics with a contemporary touch, find their roots and finally re–create them. While Lee was enrolled in his master’s degree course at Hong–Ik University, he created a new concept of “wearing denim for parties”, which made the fashion industry started paying attention to him. After winning the 2nd edition of the MANGO Fashion Award in 2009, he entered the European fashion world. He confidently entered the Paris haute couture scene as the youngest European Korean designer garnering considerable attention by the media. In 2010, he presented his unique wedding couture for S/S Collection, expressing his philosophy of life and death through the medium of weddings. Ever since, he has participated in subsequent haute couture shows.

He did not rest on these achievements but worked even harder to focus on reinterpreting Korean beauty in a modern sense. He crimped traditional silk organza to sew it into cloth, creating various clothes with different silhouettes. Above all, to articulate the beauty of Korea, he sought to express the appearance of the Korean Hanbok and Korean sentiments in a contemporary sense. As for the materials, he not only uses simple hemp cloth or delicate ramie cloth but also Changhoji, a traditional paper, to create his motifs, which gives a delicate and transparent feeling. Changhoji reflects the sounds of birds, winds and water and conveys a soft light, linked to mental healing. To visualize textures, warmth and shadows, he sews traditional fabrics in various techniques, producing new materials.

Ultimately, Lee Jean Youn’s work combines seemingly conflicting properties and emotions such as reflecting and concealing, softness and lightness, vagueness and roughness, and coolness and warmth. Lee Jean Youn’s rich collection, featuring feather– like wrinkles and flowing drapes, is reminiscent of beautiful marine birds and poetic images of modern artisans.
