PIONEERING A NEW PATH

Seniors blaze unique trails for their futures by remaining committed to their passion ANUJ SINGH Opinions Editor

ften, the path for high school students after they graduate is seen as linear. After receiving a high school diploma, students must pursue higher education in a traditional job as the only way to true happiness and success.

However, this narrow-minded view of after-highschool plans has caused numerous students to suppress their passion, and childhood dreams fade out of memory.

But this is not the case for everyone. Despite numerous challenges, senior Landon Kapsa has remained committed to his long-time vision to serve his country and has worked to ensure it can become a reality.

“My motivations for [continuing with my path] stem from my willingness and wanting to serve my country to the best of my ability. My inherent sense of duty is the primary reason I’ve wanted to go into the military for so long. I want to give back to the country that has given so much to me and that has gotten me to where I am today,” Kapsa said.

His hard work and dedication have paid off, as Kapsa has received numerous prestigious distinctions and nominations that have enabled him to take steps closer and closer to achieving his goal.

Specifically, one of Kapsa’s most treasured memories from this journey was receiving the honor of being nominated by US Senator Deb Fischer for the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point.

“After the [West Point nomination], I was called personally by both Senator Pete Ricketts and Representative Don Bacon. Those calls felt amazing to get, despite the fact that I was at a loss for words while on the phone,” Kapsa said. “In truth, those calls to me were almost like a wake-up call; they were signs that, against all expecta-

tions, the dream that I had worked so hard to pursue may actually come true.”

But even while pursuing a traditional four-year university education, students, like senior Graham Baijnauth, have been able to carve out uniquely personal paths for their futures.

“A fashion history museum archivist is a specific job and as a result, there isn’t a degree for it. A fashion history degree doesn’t exist either, so I plan to complete a textile history certificate alongside the museum sciences degree,” Baijnauth said.

Baijnauth had a unique inspiration for beginning their journey into this field, finding their passion from a pop culture moment.

“Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress to the 2022 MET Gala [inspired me to follow this path]. I strongly believe that instances like this should be stopped and that such iconic garments should be preserved and protected. [This incident] at the 2022 MET Gala was the thing that made me decide that I wanted to devote the rest of my life to making sure something like that never happens again,” Baijnauth said.

Furthermore, Baijnauth hopes that their involvement in this field will enable them to advocate for fashion’s recognition as a necessary and important branch of knowledge.

“The fact [is] that fashion is not viewed as a valid branch of history, yet it is an incredibly essential part of the way we visualize and interact with history. One of the first things that define a point in time is what is being worn, and it’s time we begin to recognize that,” Baijnauth said.

By exploring this field, Baijnauth has been able to unite two of their strongest passions, designing fashion

and exploring its history, while simultaneously constructing a stepping stone to their future aspirations of changing the world’s perception of fashion.

While remaining committed to what may not seem like a traditional job can be intimidating, there are many resources and people who are willing to help students every step of the way, including counselors here at MN. “Most of my students also come to see me with questions or for guidance throughout their journey at Millard North. I thoroughly enjoy sitting down with them and talking about their goals and aspirations,” counselor Abbie Sivinski said.

Besides speaking with counselors, there are numerous other options to explore alternate paths for students, including the annual Skilled Career Expo as well as exploring resources such as Naviance.

Both Kapsa and Baijnauth believe that by remaining steadfast in their commitment to their futures, they have forged paths for themselves that will benefit them in the future.

“The skills of leadership from [my plans] combined with the degree that I hope to earn I feel will translate to future success as leadership is an essential part to being successful in the US military and being an effective part of our armed forces, which is what I hope to become,” Kapsa said.

Above all, they encourage students to stay true to what they believe in and to pursue what they love because it is what will enable them to truly live their lives.

“Your life is what you make it. And it becomes so much more fun when you stop caring what other people think about you. Don’t let anyone tell you that your dreams and plans aren’t valid,” Baijnauth said. “Because everything will be okay in the end, and if it isn’t okay, it isn’t the end.”

IS COLLEGE THE RIGHT PATH FOR YOU? On top of a long high school education, jumping into 4 more years of college and many years of graduate school to follow that can be scary for students that have already done so much throughout their years from elementary to high school.

Social experiences are guaranteed in a diverse educational setting. Most colleges offer opportunities, have get-togethers, and host clubs dedicated to cultural, social, and religious groups to get to know and develop in their lives together.

Going to college can lead to expanded career opportunities.

Many professions in the modern world require at least a bachelor’s degree as a minimum qualification, so going to college opens up a wider range of career options and increases your chances of landing a job in fields that interest you.

College campuses offer networking opportunities including students, professors, and alumni. Building relationships with peers and mentors can lead to valuable career advancements later on.

Colleges often don’t offer full-ride or full-acess programs for everyone in need, and so students in difficult financial situations might choose to save their money and their credit scores by entering the workforce after graduation, and some may return to school with finances.

Perhaps most often, graduating students may find that their goals just don’t line up with a college education. Technological, trade, cosmetological, and other specialized educational institutes may offer more in-depth and valuable educations to students pursuing interests that deviate from regular college-offered degrees and educational programs.

Studying a trade is a dynamic and rewarding pathway for individuals after high school, providing hands-on experience and specialized skills that are in demand across vrious industries. Tradesmen have the opportunity for immediate entry into the workforce, competitive salaries, and lessened student debt.

Getting a job right out of high school is often a solid investment, as many students can save money for future schooling if they want to pursue it. Additionally, pursuing a profession from a young age can provide the graduating student valuable experience from an early age, allowing more time for progression up the ladder of employment.

For many, the end of high school is a time to relax. Some students may choose to take a year off to relax and decide their plans for the future on the beach. For some, a gap year can include volunteer work, or for the religious, missions to other countries are incredible opportunities to learn more.

“INSANE” TALENT

Insanity show band works diligently to reach show choir success TEJA SRIDHER Staff Writer

D etailed choreography? Check. Eloquent costumes?

Check. Impressive vocal arrangements and captivation of the overall audience? Check and check.

These are some of the many aspects that individuals in the judging panel and audience would be looking for in each show choir group. Whether it’s Infinity, Illumination, or Intensity, each group’s stunning choreography, costumes, and vocal arrangements have been widely recognized in each performance.

But at the same time, the individuals who aren’t directly involved in the singing and dancing aspect of the show may not be the first people you would think of when show choir is mentioned.

Talented and tight-knit, Insanity is the school’s showband. These performers travel with the show choirs for each competition.

Like the show

c h o i r s, the showband has made significant achievements this season.

They recently won the title of “Best Band” at the Gretna

Primetime show on Jan. 15th. The last time the band won this title was at the Waconia Star Power competition Feb. 2022.

“It felt unreal getting best band at our first competition. We were all very excited about it. [It felt like] all of our hard work [had] paid off,” synth player and sophomore Emma Schlick said.

Schlick believes that the strong sense of community with each performer is truly what makes them all so in-sync, on and off the stage.

“The community in show band is very tight-knit, especially

now t h a t we’ve had time to get used to each other. We work well together and are productive but still have lots of fun,” Schlick said.

The group organizes bi-weekly meetings every Monday and Thursday night in which they would rehearse with the choirs.

“During rehearsals, we typically work diligently to polish our music and occasionally do group bonding games to help us come together, not only in a musical sense, but also in a community sense,” drummer and senior Jack Reason said.

Despite the hard work, consistent effort, and allocated time set aside for these twicea-week rehearsals, the question arises whether the audience is really considering the band or just

Senior Ainsley Anderson, a trombonist, thinks that both groups are necessary and corresponding for both’s success.

“I think that people are always naturally going to pay more attention to the choir since they’re the ones on stage, but just like [how] the show choir can’t be successful without the band, the band can’t be successful without the show choir,” Anderson said. Playing alongside the show choirs has also created new opportunities and experiences of a lifetime for Insanity.

“Getting to perform with all the choir groups is a great opportunity for every band member to play a lot of music that we normally wouldn’t have the chance to. For myself, I know I wouldn’t be any good of a drummer if I didn’t have a show band to encourage me to practice, learn, and improve,” Reason said.

The appreciation for each other even extends communally with members of MNSC as both the show choirs and the show band agree that they have a mutualistic relationship when it comes to their combined success.

“Our show choir program is extremely lucky to have such a solid and talented group of musicians to back us up. The people in Insanity are super fun, supportive, and add a lot to this program,” junior Jennifer Bonge said.

“Their amount of work does not go unseen,” Having a strong show band as well as supportive show choirs seems to have made the both of the groups’ musical experience more enjoyable as a whole.

The show band has brought forth tremendous commitment and diligence this season, which has all translated into the progress they have been making. Insanity’s dedication and perseverance will continue to lead the way throughout the show choir competition season, towards infinitely more award ceremonies.

BOOSTING BRILLIANCE

Often behind-the-scenes, Mustang Booster Club makes a difference in the MN community

A factor in this flourishing equation of success is community support, integral to the prosperity of these teams. In particular, one organization that has gone above and beyond, often behind the scenes, is the Mustang Booster Club.

First created in 2011 by past administration to provide annual memberships and fundraisers for extra-curricular activities, the club offers three levels of membership to support an activity of your choice.

“The Booster Club has paid for sound systems, turf fields, uniforms, AEDs and other requests, and MN student organizations and sports teams can request funds through the Mustang Booster Club website,” MBC co-president Angie Frederick said.

With so many different ideas and necessities for the betterment of the school, the club is highly organized and has a motivated board of advisors ensuring their goals are met.

“We meet several times a month, usually on Wednesday nights, to discuss and try to find ways to get parents of all groups to get involved,” board member and activities Director Keith Maly said.

Due to the wide audience MBC manages to reach, the network has partnered with many different organizations to provide for activity needs.

“MBC has worked with several community businesses and partners to help raise dollars including Union Pizzeria, Swim Omaha, UBT, Spin Pizza and others,” A. and K. Frederick said.

By organizing events at these places, the club offers support while creating community bonding and strengthening activity engagement. “[Recently], the Booster Club worked with Union Pizza to hold a watch party for the boys’ basketball game that was played in Illinois,” Maly said.

Events like these are largely appreciated by all activities, but one of the programs that the Booster Club has helped most tremendously has been the boys and girls soccer teams. “[The club] is huge. Any time you get a bunch of parents and a bunch of supporters together, they can do so much to help, and any extra help we can get greatly impacts us,” head boys soccer coach Sandro DeAngelis said.

The extra resources the club can provide add to a list of motivation factors for students to participate in the activity.

“It’s enormous, not only for our program, but for every program… anytime we want to create something great it requires money and people. We are very lucky to have these resources in the MN community to create the memories students want to have,” DeAngelis said.

MBC doesn’t isn’t restriced to only activity funding. The organization provides essential equipment, and more for the general student population as well, offering a wide scope.

“They have purchased a new sound system for the auditorium. They organize the craft fair in the fall, and they find volunteers for After Putting Out Their Best Prom,” Maly said.

We also have volunteer opportunities which include fundraising and events,” MBC co-president Kurt Frederick said.

Before the pandemic, the club’s membership count was at a peak of 400 members, but the current membership count is at 120, due to COVID restrictions and hardships. Because of this, the club presidents encourage more people to join.

“We just need to continue to get the message out to people and attract more members because strength is in numbers,” Maly said.

As the club continues to grow, its efforts to improve MN will be even more impactful.

The already growing community will be able to develop more connections and expand their voice to bring positive change into our school.

ONE LAST DANCE

MNDT takes on the UDA National Championship, representing MN and Nebraska once again pool time while CECE VLIEGER Staff Writer drenaline rushes through their veins as the Millard North Dance Team approaches the Marley, the floor the girls take the stage on at the Universal Dance Association High School National Competition. The girls prepare to represent the MN blue, green, and silver and hopefully bring home another white, gleaming jacket.

MN’s dance program is set to a high standard of winning national titles. These 6x National Champions and 29x Nebraska State Champions strive to be the best of the best.

They have a legacy to uphold.

Senior Brooklyn Bratetic has poured her soul into dance since she could remember. Starting her freshman year, worked toward the goal of being the best team in the country. For her and the rest of the team, performing with their teammates at Nationals leaves a melancholy feeling in their hearts. “ My favorite part [of Nationals] is doing our last dance together of our jazz routine, waving to the crowd…. [There are always] tears in our eyes,” Bratetic said.

Although time and effort consumed trying to get their routine perfect is assumed, the girls couldn’t have done it without their coaches. Dance coach Andrea Feltz has been working with the girls to help them push themselves to the limit for Nationals.

“I always tell the girls to keep taking advantage of every second of practice, it’s never too late until we step on the final score for the last time,” Feltz said.

During the week, the team has practices up to 4 or 5 times per week, rehearsing from 6:15 to 7:30 AM. As the big date of Feb. 2 inches closer, the girls sometimes add extra practices during the week to make sure everything is crisp and well put together for their pieces.

“We put a lot of hard work in, on the floor, hoping to get to finals [to know] we did as much as we could do to get there, ” Bratetic said.

In addition to competing, the girls also have a schedule blocked off to relax and have fun. One thing senior Caitlin Gregg enjoys on the team’s second day in Florida is exploring Disney World as one big dance family.

“After dancing, on the second day, we go to the Disney after-party hosted just for the dance teams, which is really fun,” Gregg said. We also have at least 30 mins of

“All of us have pride in ourselves with not only attending Millard North but also being a part of this dance team because of the love we all have for each other,” junior MNDT dancer Ella Quick said.

“Bleeding blue” is a term often used to describe a display of MN pride. The dance team’s dedication to repping the school has rightfully earned this title, the girls have decided.

“To me, ‘bleeding blue’ means having so much pride in going to this school,” Quick said. “It’s the way my team and I represent Millard North,” Though this is the end of the long road for seniors, the Millard North Dance Team’s legacy lives on in the hearts of its team and the people who support it.

ADDRESSING THE UNSANITARY Cleaning up etiquette where no one is watching THE HOOFBEAT STAFF EDITORIAL icture this: you just took a mentally-depriving math exam, leaving you devoid of all feeling in your fingertips with three dull number 2 pencils in your backpack and dim hopes of at least an 80% in the grade book. All you have to do is FINALLY use the restroom during the passing period.

But you can’t, because some students before you had the same idea, except their bathroom activities included vaping, fist-fighting each other, and of course, getting worried administrators involved in what should have been your quick, stress-relieving bathroom break. On top of the stress of your math test, you can’t even lay eyes upon the porcelain that so often provides you comfort.

This story may sound odd to those who have never braved the bathrooms at the prime times for vapers. A bathroom is meant to serve the purpose of bowel relief, and yet, it rarely serves a purpose other than inducing more stress.

One often cannot find peace and quiet in a school restroom. Whether the entry of another student or the sounds of illicit activity are interrupting your bathroom break, there is rarely a calm moment in the bathrooms of MN. As a student there are multiple reasons to enter the bathroom, usually boiling down to hair checks, hand washing, and plain-old numbers one or two. It is the odd ones out that ruin the bathroom experience for us all.

According to assistant principal Matt Starks, many students choose the bathrooms for their mischief, with a false sense of security to be had in an unsupervised area.

“There’s an added level of comfort if these students are in the bathroom and they think they can get away with it,” Starks said.

When walking into a high school bathroom, there are a multitude of possible activities that are going on.

Whether there’s a line out the door for the stalls available, a student out front guarding the door for a group of fighting delinquents, or an entire friend group hanging out inside, high school bathrooms are a force to be reckoned with.

Are these bathrooms with ambient toilet-flushing noises really worthy of hosting your conversations? Can you even communicate the necessary gossip in such a smelly area? The students of MN need to band together and find better locations for these discussions. People hanging around the bathrooms at MN cause so much unnecessary discomfort in an already-bothersome space, so it is important that we can open these bathrooms up for comfort and not for delinquency and further policing.

“If there is excessive noise or an issue that we’ve been alerted to, we respond quickly to the bathrooms,” Starks said. “Our security guards can poke their heads in to look for prohibited items and make sure there’s not more than one student in each stall.”

I think they can be pretty dirty, but it’s alright. I also think it’s a bit weird sometimes when people aren’t very hygenic in the bathroom.

It is so loud in the bathroom in all periods of the day. It doesn’t really bother me, but I know it can be really loud for other people.

It is often that, when walking the halls, you might see students speed-walk out of a bathroom seconds after peering inside, and that’s only because of the smell half of the time. The bathrooms make students fear not for the status of the toilet, but for their school records instead. A large group of students passing a vape under the stalls can mean bad things for the students in the same bathroom, minding their own business. This scenario, luckily, doesn’t happen often, but the possibility can be scary enough to deter many of the bravest students from trying their hands at bathroom breaks.

This constant deterrence of other students means that more and more bathrooms aren’t used for their real purpose. Crowds of students stand against the walls, and whether a vape is passed around or not, the intimidation of seeing six guys just standing around the sinks can easily make things awkward enough to rid one of any bowel pressure that incited the need for a bathroom break in the first place.

Oh well, right? The bathrooms can just be hangout spots for delinquency and the rest of us are just going to be fine with it. I mean, I didn’t really need to use the bathroom anyway, I just felt like popping in at 8 in the morning to check the status of the friend groups that gab about their mornings in the bathroom, perhaps even catching them plotting their latest soap-throwing and vape-hitting acts of defiance.

Most of the time, it’s pretty civil. Sometimes, it can get a little crazy, and it’s like I’m just trying to go the bathroom, and I don’t want to be late.

I don’t really mind them, but I don’t usually like going to the bathrooms because there’s a lot of people and stuff going on in there.

People are gathered around celebrating while drinking champagne and having a SARAH ROBEY blast bringing Staff Writer in the new year.

But then what happens? For me, the return to normal work and school schedules has erased my holly-jolly feeling, replacing it with mixed emotions about the beginning months of the year.

Some people find these months the most productive while trying to complete New Year’s resolutions. This can include trying to spend less time on social media or maybe not leaving assignments until the last minute. If you are like me, these New Year’s resolutions have already gone as January turned into endless unproductive and tiring days.

One of these contributing factors is the lack of festive spirit after December’s holidays come to a stop. The holiday Starbucks cups have switched to the normal everyday ones with your normal coffee orders instead of a Peppermint Mocha.

The lights and decorations have been taken down, leaving the walls bare as it is too early for spring

decor. Radio stations have gone back to playing regular songs and family gatherings have passed with weeks until the next. All that is left from the holidays is the leftover snickerdoodles that will soon be gone.

Even a snow day isn’t enough to bring back the cheery feeling.

Not only does the not-so-merry feeling leave an unhappy mark, but the harsh winter weather can take a toll on people too. None of us are strangers to Nebraska winters, complete with freezing temperatures and blankets of snow covering the ground.

This year has been especially rough with almost two weeks of bitter cold, wind, and snow. Normally, I like a little snow, but this was too much. The added chore of shoveling snow off the driveway was a pain, only for it to be once again covered in snow. With inches and inches of snow, my brother and I faced the cold and annoying task several times throughout the day.

Snow and ice also make driving conditions dangerous. This can cause people to be nervous while they are driving.

According to the PR Newswire, 73% of drivers in America say they are anxious about driving in winter weather conditions such as snow, sleet, or ice.

For me, as a new driver with little winter driving experience, these conditions only make driving more difficult.

The roads have become less visible and slick which has made me nervous to drive. I got my first taste of driving on winter roads these last couple of weeks and slid a few times but, luckily, did not have any

problems. There have been times that I have felt uncomfortable driving, which has led to my mom once again dropping me off.

The weather also kept me inside going stir crazy.

With three snow days, the boredom and tiredness caused me to procrastinate on my e-learning assignments. Laying around on the couch in my pajamas while watching Netflix was a lot more appealing than doing my schoolwork.

In addition, for some people, the dark days can trigger feelings of the “winter blues.” The winter blues is not a medical diagnosis but describes the slump many people find themselves in during this time of year. It is usually more mild and clears up on its own as the seasons change.

A more severe form of this is called SAD (seasonal affective disorder). This disorder is a type of depression that occurs during certain seasons of the year mostly in fall or winter. Although there is no clear cause, shorter days and less sunlight are thought to be connected to a chemical change in the brain causing SAD. Although winter can be hard, there are still many things that can be enjoyed and looked forward to. Soon all of America’s TVs will be tuned in to watch the Super Bowl. Even if you aren’t a Chiefs, 49ers, or even a Taylor Swift fan, this event is always a fun time for friends and family. My family and friends and I will be eating chili and cinnamon rolls rooting for the Chiefs.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner and finally making an appearance in stores. Reds and pinks fill the aisles, bringing back a much-needed boost of holiday spirit.

I am looking forward to eating the delicious candy hearts and baking heart-shaped cookies for the holiday.

With a long winter ahead of us, we may fall into this never-ending cycle of unproductive and tiredness. Even though it is easy to let it take over us, we must try to push through and take a look on the bright side of things which will make this season a little more bearable.

Millard North High School has been such a place.

From the bustling hallways to the classrooms and sports fields, our school has played an important role in the lives of many families, helping to shape their futures and create lasting memories. Home sweet home indeed.

Two particular families, the Morgans and McIvors, went to MN— then the parents and now the kids. And yes, things have really changed.

Senior Josslyn Morgan longed to have similar experiences to those her parents shared as she listened to their stories.

“We used to be very good at football and win all the time. Now our focus has shifted more to basketball. The football games are more open and expressive than when you’re inside on the basketball court. It just seems that the culture of the football games that my parents would tell me about, I think I kind of missed out on that as a high school student,” Morgan said.

Senior Caleb McIvor felt that the school has become more competitive in terms of both students and programs. He believes that this has contributed to the overall enjoyment of the school.

“The programs are much bigger now. There are more kids involved. They’re also much more competitive. For example, marching band was way more competitive than when my dad was in [it]. Show choir wasn’t really competitive back then. It was more of just putting on a show for fun,” McIvor said.

“Looking back, Millard North did a great job of preparing me for my post-secondary plans. I probably didn’t appreciate it enough at the time, but now that I have children attending, and see all of the opportunities they have,

I can say that it was and is a great school,” K. Morgan said.

Josslyn followed in the footsteps of her mother by joining the theater program.

“When my mom was taking theater, it wasn’t quite as big. The sets weren’t as impressive. Whereas when I’m doing it, they and my grandparents will come and be so surprised by what we managed to put on,” Morgan said.

Dave and Kendra McIvor, parents of Caleb, graduated from MN in 1997. Both feel that it is a great school and offers a variety of opportunities due to its diversity.

“Millard North is a big school - it was big in the 90s and is bigger now. The variety of people and their backgrounds, beliefs, interests, talents, hobbies, etc. means there are opportunities for relationships to foster and grow and stay connected for a lifetime. Academics has always been a key focal point for Millard North, but more than that, the focus on students and the encouragement to experiment and succeed is even stronger,” D. and K. McIvor said.

Mick Morgan, Josslyn’s father, graduated from MN in 1997. He built some of his strongest bonds while going to school there.

“We [M. and K. Morgan] met each other at Millard North as we were both the MN band together. Many of my strongest friendships to this day I started while attending MNHS,” M. Morgan said.

K. Morgan had given an important piece of advice to her children before they started their education at this high school.

“To try it all. Take an engineering class. Take a business class. Take a programming class. Take a metalworking class. Take an art class. Take a foods class. Join a club. Join a few clubs! This is the time to explore and experience a variety of interests so that you are better prepared to make decisions about your future when you graduate,” K. Morgan said.

Both of these families share a special bond with MN. Being in some of the same programs and walking the same hallways as their parents, it has been interesting for the children to hear and experience some of the similar yet different things our school has to offer.

Longtime and former student faculty reflect on then-to-now GRACE EVERT Staff Writer sk any senior, and they can attest to the many changes that have taken place at MN since they were a freshman.

A new teacher, an addition to the building, or a new school policy are yearly modifications at any school. But how do these changes look in the eyes of longtime teachers or faculty who now teach at the school they once called home?

MN is home to many former student faculty and longtime teachers who have witnessed and helped shape the school and community into what it is today. From new wing additions to new AP class offerings, they have experienced it all firsthand.

One such Spanish teacher, Amy Roberts, graduated from MN in 1999.

“It has been pretty amazing to see the school with a new set of eyes and experiences. It has evolved a great deal in our student offerings and programs. Our student population is also far more diverse than in the late 90s,” Roberts said.

Chemistry teacher Daryl Jahn has taught at MN for 30 years and has been pivotal in developing the science department and course offerings.

“When I started, we had one AP science class, AP Biology. I pushed the district for about five years to add an AP Chemistry class. After that, we had an explosion in the number of AP classes we offered,” Jahn said.

Another longtime teacher, Julia Kolander, started the Latin program within Millard, which has been growing ever since. Latin is now offered at the AP and IB levels.

“I have always enjoyed the challenges of helping scholars find their best way to learn, and I still enjoy differentiating my lessons for all levels of scholars,” Kolander said.

These diverse offerings and passionate teachers have made an impact on the lives of countless students, and are the reason some return to teach.

“I teach US History. And yes, that’s the class I took in high school that made me want to be a teacher. My teacher was Mr. Eicher, who is now in the Hall of Fame for MNHS,” history teacher David Diehl who graduated from MN in 1999 said.

Roberts also said that her high school experience inspired her to teach. She now teaches classes similar to those she took in high school.

“MN was high on my list because I appreciated the rigor and expectations that were upheld during my time as a student. Returning to MN was still a difficult decision to make because I loved the people I worked with at my previous school,” Roberts said.

With passing time also comes the advancement in technology, which has greatly impacted the educational experience.

“When I started teaching, the internet was just starting out. In science, schools were just beginning to have computers that could have probeware to collect data for experiments, and graphing calculators did not exist yet.

All of my notes were handwritten and then projected on

the overhead machine. Today, I have equipment that rivals the equipment they are using in college labs,” Jahn said.

Of course, improving technology is a double-edged sword and has positively and negatively affected students. Millard now has a one-to-one student-to-device ratio, which is very different from the past.

“We used to have computer labs with massive desktop computers and many of us in my peer groups used pagers to communicate with landlines. I believe typing was a required course, and laptops, and email communication were just emerging!” Roberts said.

Along with technological shifts come building renovations and additions, as well as classroom restructuring.

“The building used to be divided into hallways by grades. The 2100s were for freshmen, the 1100s were for sophomores, the 2600s were for juniors, and the 1600s were for seniors. It was ‘the senior hallway’ and when we had spirit weeks each grade would decorate their hallway,” Diehl said.

Over time this setup shifted and departments are now located in the same wings. Three large renovations also took place, including moving the library and cafeteria, creating the Mustang Center, renovating the entrance, and adding the lecture halls.

“There have been many changes to the area around the school also. The addition of turf to the soccer field and baseball field. The building between the soccer field and baseball field, and the renovation of the softball area,” Jahn said.

Needless to say, all of these improved facilities have allowed students access to countless opportunities. However, despite all these changes, some aspects of MN have always stayed the same.

“Students have, in many ways, stayed the same. Even though they may have their unique differences, teenagers these days still have a difficult, scary world to navigate and they need caring, competent professional teachers to believe in them and push them to be their best. That hasn’t changed and I love that it’s the case,” Diehl said.

Jahn is completing his final year at MN before retiring in the spring and is grateful for the experience.

“30 years ago when I moved back to Nebraska, I could have taught at any metro school I wanted.

I chose to teach at Millard North and I am very happy and blessed to have made that decision. I love this school, I love what we do for students and I am very proud to have been a part of this school,” Jahn said.

Clearly, despite ups and downs, MN has always had amazing teachers who have inspired students to follow their dreams; leading some right back to their high school.

A TWIST ON TRADITION Bringing back prom court, with a few changes MAHDIS RIAZIKHAH Staff Writer I stood onstage, everyone clapping and smiling at me for being voted for prom royalty. I felt joyful about being recognized by my peers.

In 2016, it was an administrative choice to do away with prom royalty. The administration said it was causing insecurity and was a popularity contest.

Before, students were nominated by other students. Now, students will be asked if they would like to participate. A list will be e-mailed to Millard staff of the willing participants.

From there, teachers will pick their top junior or senior with the best “Mustang mindset” and always being ready, responsible, and respectable.

A pep rally will be held the week before prom, and students will vote for the chosen nominees.

“I think there is something special about being recognized by your teachers and peers for being an outstanding student. That doesn’t mean it’s about grades.

It’s really about character and how people treat people.

It feels good to be nominated by people because you are being seen, and you are being seen for the right reasons.

I wanted to get away from a popularity contest. It’s not

about that, it’s about kids with great hearts and a super Mustang mindset.” JCB sponsor Amy Roberts said.

One benefit of bringing back prom court and royalty is people will stay longer for prom and homecoming.

“As a prom sponsor, I want to see all the kids there and enjoying themselves through the entirety of the night and also alleviate a little concern if they are there and then go straight to after prom then we know they are going to be safe and accounted for and that’s a major plus for me,” Roberts said.

MN is working on a way to make prom and homecoming a fun time for students.

COMBATING CRUSH CULTURE Societal pressure on teen dating leads to harmful results

ands grasping the steering wheel, I turn onto Pacific Street. Quiet music sweeps over me, pulling at my torn heartstrings.

“Crush culture makes me wanna spill my guts out, I know what you’re doin’, trying to get me to pursue you,” cries out singer Conan Gray in his song “Crush

Culture”.

According to Song Tell, this song comments on our society’s unhealthy obsession with romantic love and the emotionally exhausting pressure to constantly pursue it.

The song also uncovers the negative consequences of engaging in crush culture: loneliness, lies, and manipulation.

“Oh, no, don’t look in their eyes, ‘cause that’s how they get you, kiss you then forget you, all they feedin’ you is beautiful lies,” the song continues.

I turn off the music and walk into the school building.

Heading to my history class, I can’t help but notice all of the couples, holding hands, hugging.

There is one undeniable fact about high s c h o o l ; there is a huge pressure to be in a relationship. But why?

This pressure stems from societal expectations, wanting self-affirmation, or a need to belong.

We think we have to be with someone to be happy.

But is that really true? Do we genuinely like this person or the idea of being with them? Or the aspect of being seen with someone?

The desire to fit in sometimes leads people to enter relationships without knowing much about the person.

What are their interests? Values? Life goals?

Are they packing a racquet and tennis balls into a bag, slinging it over their shoulder, and sprinting onto the courts, excited to get out and start hitting? Or are they turning on an XBOX and playing aimlessly for hours?

Do they take the time to talk things out, tell the truth, and show up at their partners’ important events? Or are

they always “busy” with something else, or “too tired”?

And then you come to the dreaded stage: the relationship comes to an end. You date this person, experience things together. Then, you break up. But you don’t.

It’s all still there. They’re still everywhere you turn. You can’t go to the places you used to go with them, you can’t do the things you used to do with them. The person continues to take over your life.

Crush culture has occupied such a vast portion of our minds. When we should be thinking about finding a job, staying on top of schoolwork, what we plan to do after high school, we are instead thinking about who got together with whom, our own exes, our friends’ exes, or are looking for someone to date.

But are high school relationships inherently bad?

According to The Sand Piper, dating can be a way to learn cooperation, socially appropriate behavior, manners, and interdependence. You also learn to compromise, empathize, and develop a meaningful and intimate connection.

In a healthy relationship, your partner can become an invaluable support system, helping you through the ups and downs of hard classes and college applications, and can be your shoulder to cry on, your safe space, and most of all, your best friend.

I n our big school, you can hear a wide variety of opinions on the pros and cons of high school dating. On one hand, you may hear that growing up in today’s difficult world alongside someone else is easier than taking it all on by yourself.

On the other hand, we make big decisions during these years that can rapidly change people’s lives and connections.

Besides, no one is completely independent in high school and you have to work around authority and parental permission. We are growing up but still aren’t grown up enough.

But everybody agrees: relationships change you.

They can cause you to drift away from your friends. At the same time, they can help you realize what is right or wrong for you as you enter adulthood.

In my opinion, the negatives of high school dating significantly outweigh the positives. Succumbing to the pressure decreases your mental stability, drains you emotionally, and often decreases self-confidence. I believe it’s important to be yourself and think about what you want, instead of trying to fit into a mold others created.

Navigating through the crossroads of education and technology

verywhere we look, we find ourselves captivated by the constant hum of fingers tapping on screens, illuminating our world.

Our phones, laptops, and tablets are more than just mere devices that provide and ARGYRENIA PIPINOS entertainment distractions but a Staff Writer gateway to a new way of education.

As I stand at the crossroads of traditional teaching methods and the digital age, I have come to find that technology has been a more inclusive and effective learning experience. I believe that it will allow the new generation of learners to be equipped with the skills and adaptability needed for their future and the challenges they will face.

As a student navigating through the 21st century, the skills required for success are evolving rapidly. The integration of technology in education is not just about preparing students like me for jobs but equipping us with the skills needed to navigate the challenges of tomorrow.

Digital literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability are all the things we strive to be and technology will help us do so.

According to the Institute of Education Sciences, the use of technology and digital content in classrooms in the

U.S. is at 89% through K-12th. Adaptive learning platforms, virtual classrooms, and interactive simulations are a breath of fresh air from a one-size-fits-all approach creating an environment where all students can flourish at their own pace, fostering a love for learning that extends beyond the traditional confines of education.

In addition to enhancing traditional learning methods, technology in education also fosters inclusivity. It provides personalized learning experiences, accommodating diverse learning styles and abilities. Students with different paces of understanding or specific needs can benefit from adaptive technologies. Technology can cater to students with disabilities, breaking down barriers and creating a more suitable educational landscape.

Graduation rates for kids with disabilities since technology has been integrated into schools have increased by 22%, according to the University of Texas. Providing one example of how technology in the classroom can help students with special needs excel.

In my personal experience, the integration of technology in education has been transformative. As a student, the shift towards digital learning platforms has allowed me to explore subjects in a more interactive and engaging manner. The use of adaptive learning tools has allowed me to find my pace of learning and style of understanding, making the learning process more effective.

This personalized approach has not only boosted my academic performance but has also made me feel like I can learn just like everyone else.

The National Center for Education Statistics stated that educational applications can improve academic per-

formance by 30% in math, science, reading, and languages, demonstrating how technology can improve education.

In our world, technology is always changing.

About 56 years ago the first immersive tools came out, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR).

They transform abstract concepts into interactive experiences beyond the limits of our everyday classrooms. VR and AR are two of the many resources that create an engaging environment that encourages active learning and participation.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 79% of educators reported improvements in student achievement when they integrated technology into their classrooms. Demonstrating the positive impact of using technology when learning.

One of the notable advantages of educational technology is the resources available at students’ fingertips. Online databases, e-books, and educational apps provide a vast amount of information beyond what traditional textbooks can offer. Which broadens the scope of knowledge but also encourages self-directed learning. Being able to explore topics of interest independently, allowed me to have a love for learning, and be more involved when it comes to teaching.

When fusing education and technology we can see a future where learning is not just confined to the classroom but can be taken into a boundless realm of possibilities. Embracing technology can pave the way for new learners and allow them to have confidence in their future where technology is used every day.

BATTLE OF THE BALMS

Reveiwing popular lip products: grail or fail?

and, perhaps most notably, painfully chapped lips.

In order to fend off this problem, I have tried numerous different products, from lip gloss to chapstick to lip oil.

In addition to my collection of the latter, I decided to try some of the most popular lip balms on the market today.

When assessing the quality of lip products, there are a few necessary characteristics to take into account, including value, application, appearance, and longevity.

One of the most well-known and popularly used lip balms is Aquaphor Lip Repair. One .35-ounce tube is just under 5 dollars. The affordability of this product is one of the first aspects that drew me to it.

Upon unscrewing the cap, I noticed a diagonal-shaped applicator, which made it possible to apply it without needing to use my fingers. However, the applicator was very stiff, so it was hard to fully and effectively spread it.

The ointment itself, however, provided a thick, non-sticky fluid coat and quick relief to dry lips. I felt the moisture immediately sink in. On another positive note, I did not need to reapply until 4 hours later.

As far as appearance goes, the Aquaphor created a shiny sheen- which lasted for about 3 hours- but it had no tint, which was one of the few downsides.

Next up was the tint specialty: the Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Plump.

One thing that I immediately loved about this product was the shiny, alluring packaging. It also has a diagonal

applicator complete with a pump on the bottom to push the product upwards when it gets low, similar to a push pop.

I love the pump applicator because it is much easier than squeezing a tube like you need to for most lip products.

I purchased the shade “mixed berries” in the .1 ounce size for 24 dollars at my local Sephora. For such a high price, I was excited to put it to the test.

I uncapped the container, pumped the product to the top, and began to apply it on my lips. The application, as expected, was easy and smooth, and the product itself melted into my lips. The process was quick as there was no need to rub it in because I was able to put it directly onto my lips. It felt only slightly sticky.

The color was also perfect. It gave my lips an amazing, dark red tint, natural but stylish with a subtle shimmer.

The downfall of this product, however, was its longevity. The shine only lasted for about an hour, and, after about an hour and a half, my lips were dry and in need of another application. An argument for the product is that only a little is needed to get the look desired, so, despite the need to reply so often, it does have a long shelf- or vanity- life.

Finally was the product with so much hype that it has been sold out on-and-off for months: Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm. I purchased the shade vanilla beige in the .5-ounce size for $24, also at Sephora.

At first glance, Summer Fridays won the packaging competition. Each flavor is associated with a different color with the same aesthetic word layout on the sleek tube and an unscrewable cap.

What was underneath the cap, however, is what impressed me most. To use the balm, the tube is

squeezed and the product is pushed out onto the rubber, diagonal applicator. This applicator is perfect because it is bendable and easy to spread the product across the lips. The consistency was slightly thinner than Aquaphor, but they spread about the same; fairly smooth but taking a little extra time to spread.

The balm gave a tinted and slightly glossy glow, which presented very naturally. Additionally, this appearance lasted for about 3 hours, and I did not have to reapply for about 3.5 hours.

One final bonus for the famed Summer Fridays was the smell. The vanilla scent was not too strong, but enough to pleasantly waft upwards while I applied the product.

The smell is a subtle touch, but pleasant nonetheless.

Each lip balm shone in its own way. Aquaphor has the best cost-to-product ratio of about 14 dollars per ounce in comparison to 240 dollars per ounce for Tarte and 48 dollars per ounce for Summer Fridays. It also is the most moisturizing and long-lasting, perfect for a base coat under other products or a simple cure for dry, cracked lips.

However, as far as application, Summer Fridays took the cake.

The bendy applicator made it easy to spread and add as much or little as I wanted.

The natural glowy appearance also lasted for a few hours, which is a necessity for anybody on the go or unable to reapply often.

Finally, the winner of appearance was Tarte. The sparkle and tint were perfect… for the short amount of time that they lasted.

The most well-rounded of them all was the Summer Fridays lip butter balm, which will definitely stay a part of my routine, in every season Monday-Sunday.

However, each product had a win in at least one category, making it possible to find the perfect fit for whatever type of look, last, or feel that one may desire.

Senior Aydin Larsen fights hard in MMA endeavors MATTHEW UM Staff Writer nyone who has ever seen the 1984 movie The Karate Kid or its successor series Cobra Kai knows that martial arts is no joke. Delving into this disciplined world is Senior Aydin Larsen, who has dedicated most of his life to mastering the art.

“I am involved in an art called Taijutsu that is a self defense class, and Jiu Jitsu,” Larsen said.

These are both different forms of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), with subtle differences to separate one from the other. “[Taijutsu] is a self defense class that also covers about 90% MMA pretty much and 10% self defense,” Larsen said.

Jiu Jitsu, on the other hand, is a form of Japanese wrestling. Taijutsu, in comparison, is a more umbrella term.

Larsen has been fighting for most of his life. He began his training at 4-years old and has been competing in Jiu Jitsu for 12 years.

“My parents got me into it because it’s a good way of self defense, and it’s a great way of [getting] me in shape,” Larsen said.

He currently holds a blue belt and competes in Jiu Jitsu, while also boasting a black belt in Taijutsu. He won the Gold Medal in the 2019 Kansas City Grappling Championship.

s I trudged through the biting cold, my fingers growing more numb with each step, I questioned my sanity.

With my breath visible in front of me, my mind raced with thoughts of whether anything could be worth enduring this cold. However, I courageously continued my trek with only one goal in mind: macaroni and cheese.

I was on a mission to find the best comfort-foodfast-food hybrid in Omaha, and my first stop was Panera Bread, located on 132nd and Center. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by a sleek and modern interior, with two ordering kiosks at the front. I punched in my order of a single cup of mac and cheese, which cost me roughly $11, and eagerly awaited my meal.

My food was served to me in a sleek white bowl sitting atop a matching plate, which also housed a thick slice of baguette. I carried it from the counter to my seat, excited to enjoy hot food on such a bitterly cold day.

The flavor of the macaroni was phenomenal. Many fast food restaurants struggle with the taste of their mac and cheese, perhaps assuming only little kids will order it so it doesn’t matter, but that was not the case here. Not only was the flavor rich, but the consistency was also perfect, striking the balance between too runny and too solid. The meal warmed not only my mouth as I ate it but also my heart, giving me a wholesome feeling reminiscent of coming inside to a warm meal after a cold day as a child.

Overall, I gave my experience at Panera an 8/10.

The food was delicious and the restaurant was clean. My only note was that the service could have been better, as the staff were mildly unprofessional and seemed reluctant to help their customers.

Leaving the establishment with a smiling face and a satisfied stomach, I looked forward to my next stop: Potbelly on 120th and Blondo. This interior had a slightly more rustic feel than Panera’s, making the atmosphere immediately more cozy and comfortable.

I approached the counter to place my order: broccoli cheddar soup, which only set me back about $5. This dish has been one of my favorites since early childhood, so I was excited to try it at a less popular restaurant and see how it stacked up against its more well-known counterparts.

Upon the first taste, the soup was perfectly balanced.

The flavor of the cheese complimented the broccoli well, and the combination of the two made for the perfect texture that was easy to eat.

However, as I continued to eat my meal, I found it becoming less and less enjoyable with each bite. Not only did the texture devolve into something that reminded me more of a goop than a soup, but the cheese eventually began to taste unappealing in my mouth.

Overall, I rated my Potbelly meal a 6/10. I would return if my options were limited, but in the grand scheme of restaurants, it’s nothing special.

With that somewhat disappointing experience over and done with, I set my sights on my last meal: Kentucky Fried Chicken on 180th and Center.

As I was in a rush to eat and make it back to school before sixth hour began, I decided to put the efficiency of this restaurant to the test by using the drive-thru. Thankfully, it passed with flying colors.

Upon rolling my window down, I was greeted by the friendly voice of the woman taking my order. She was incredibly polite and attentive, making sure each detail of my meal was to my liking. With her help, I settled on a 2 piece dark meat combo, with a side of mashed potatoes

and a biscuit, all for the low low price of $9.

The highlight of the meal was, without a doubt, the chicken. The meat fell effortlessly off the bone, and the flavor of both the meat and the breading was top-notch.

It needed no gravy or hot sauce to serve as assistance, as it held its own phenomenally.

Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the sides. The biscuit certainly wasn’t bad, but it was nothing to write home about. All that could be said about it was the fact that it was relatively flavorless, and the texture was thoroughly astonishing. However, I am willing to concede that it may have been better had I not opted for the drive-thru.

The potatoes were worse. While this may not come as a surprise considering I ordered mashed potatoes from a fast food restaurant, I was not convinced that I was actually eating potatoes.

The texture was pasty, and the flavor of both the potatoes and the gravy was off putting at best. If I were to return, I would sacrifice the “comfort food” feel for taste and opt for the french fries over the potatoes any day.

Regardless of these sub-par sides, I gave my experience at KFC a 7.5/10. The quality of the chicken and the cheery staff made me realize what an underrated fast food option the restaurant is and ensured my return.

Overall, it’s safe to say that the winner of this comfort foods competition is Panera. Perhaps the best part about the restaurant is that they have so many options to choose from, so everyone is sure to be able to find something they like. However, for those who are looking for a bit more bang for their buck, I eagerly recommend KFC. No matter which restaurant you visit, my only hope is that this article has given you some insight into the hearty fast food options around Omaha to help you make it through the winter.

T

he blue mat serves as the border for your control system. Stepping on the surface, your feet tread lightly on the cushioned mats. You zone in your opponent, tuning the rest of the world out. The whistle blows and all noise fades away. In a gripping effort you pin them down, their shoulders driven into the floor. The match is over.

Senior Chase Moore knows the grit and effort it takes to be a wrestler, having achieved 100 career wins on Jan. 4 during a dual against Papillion La Vista.

“It’s a big achievement for me,” Moore said. “I never really kept count of how many wins I had, and I knew that having 100 wins was always a big deal, but achieving it really makes me feel like I’m moving in the right direction.”

As a four-time varsity wrestler and two-time State Qualifier, Moore’s accomplishments on the mat are reflected in his ability to take charge.

“He’s just a tough wrestler, works really hard, and gets after his opponents,” head wrestling coach Scott Loveless said.

Loveless has been the head coach for 13 years, playing a pivotal role in Moore’s wrestling career.

“Coach Loveless has always pushed me and worked us the hardest,” Moore said. “As far as wrestling we’ve always been the people in the best shape and we’ve never really been the kids to get tired first.”

Assistant coach Tyson Chromy has observed the time and dedication Moore puts into the sport when it comes to staying in peak condition.

“He works out quite a bit in the off season so his continued effort brings him to another level,” Chromy said.

Moore’s focus all year round combined with his attitude has contributed to his triumphs.

“My favorite part about being one of Moore’s coaches is the positivity he brings to the wrestling room every day,” Chromy said.

Through hard work and dedication this team is climbing to the top.

Game after game they show they deserve their rank as they persist. These girls deserve the recognition for their talent and their bond. I guess you can say this really is the dream team.
