he players on the court seem miles below the stands, and yet, all of their actions; every twitch of their hand throwing the ball back into another dribble, seem microscopically visible. All the sounds, whether it be the rhythmic thud of the basketball on the court floor or the frantic thud of students jumping up and down on the stands, all feels equally projected directly into your brain. It all comes together in a single feeling of belonging in something you love.

You’re a sports fan, and you don’t know how you could live without this. But for the past year, you’ve somehow managed to do just that. All thanks to a microscopic virus whose global population could fit inside a soda can: COVID-19.

This is a story seen around the country, including at MN, where spectator presence has either been severely cut due to COVID policies, or entirely halted.

In an Omaha World Herald article published on March 10, executive director of the NSAA, Jay Bellar, said his organization is discussing new regulations such as anti-bias education, supervision of student sections, and potential extended penalties to prevent incidents like these from occurring in Nebraska sports.

Most importantly, students being affected by these acts of racism should be given the opportunity to freely express their experiences and opinions on the impact of discrimination.

However, we should not leave this issue to marginalized communities. This issue is not just one for Black people to fight. Everyone must be actively anti-racist not just vaguely opposed to racism.

A school’s culture as a whole can benefit from conversation and education regarding instances of bigotry. Ultimately, consequences for individuals or groups who exhibit racism are necessary. However, the most important matter is to ensure that students of color and their well-being are always prioritized.

Prioritizing the needs of essential workers when it comes to minimum wage is essential

and tears into the services they provide for customers. The least we can do as a society to show them our appreciation is boosting their pay, so the working class can afford basic needs.

It’s clear that the current national minimum wage isn’t sustainable for most

workers.

Essential workers such as grocery store clerks and other service industry employees have always worked hard for little pay, but in the last year, they have continued their employment during a worldwide pandemic.

Many weren’t offered the opportunity to work from home like other corporate sector emplotyees were.

Instead, they continued showing up to work each day, putting their own health on the line, in order to put

food on their tables, even if those jobs didn’t financially provide enough to thrive day-to-day.

In 1938, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) established the national minimum wage at 25 cents per hour. Since then, the minimum wage has slowly progressed to its current rate of $7.25 per hour. A high school student, making just over seven dollars per hour may seem appealing; who doesn’t want extra money for gas, clothes, and food?

But the reality is, for adults trying to earn a livable wage, there is no way they can actually survive on this amount. If someone worked a minimum wage job full time, they would only earn just over $15,000 per year.

When considering the cost of housing, food, healthcare and other necessary living expenses, savings would be slim to none.

Consider this: for a family of four, the United States poverty line is $26,200 annually. So an adult with children working a minimum wage job would be $11,120 under the cut-off for living in poverty, making it impossible to be financially independent.

Even being single, the poverty line is $12,760 annually. So working a minimum wage job barely surpasses living in poverty. The federal minimum wage should be at least $15 per hour, giving workers the basic right to get necessities for themselves and their families. As

a country, we should value all workers as they are and show their importance by providing them with a livable wage.

Some claim that the minimum wage increase isn’t in everyone’s best interest and that it would only result in job loss, in addition to companies’ prices going up.

This is entirely untrue, however, as The Department of Labor data from the past eight decades shows that there is no relationship between job loss and wage increase.

The Senate recently rejected the chance to increase minimum wage through the COVID stimulus package. While it is encouraging to see that representatives recognize the need to address the financial needs of Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic, they need to see that people wouldn’t be struggling this much had they been earning enough to begin with.

As a high school student working a part time job, I earn over the minimum wage and am grateful for the opportunity to earn money for things such as extra spending funds and college tuition for the future. I don’t have to worry about paying my rent or buying food.

Unfortunately, many Americans face the reality of fully supporting themselves and others daily. The time for America to support its workers by providing them a livable wage is long overdue, and essential workers deserve better.

Except… movie nights look a bit different now. Microwave popcorn, a living room couch, and a newly released movie from HBO Max playing on the TV have become the new normal.

Movie theaters across the country are closed down due to the pandemic, causing all movies and television shows that were set to release or start production to be delayed significantly. Movies such as “A Quiet Place 2” and “Jurassic World: Dominion” were some of the most highly anticipated movies of 2020. John Krasinski who is the director of “A Quiet Place 2” wanted big box office numbers for the release, and the pandemic put a hold on it.

Specifically, Warner Bros. Pictures has decided to only release movies through streaming service, HBO Max. Once the pandemic restrictions lighten up, Warner Bros. is going to re-release all of their movies in theatres as well as leaving them on HBO Max. Disney has also decided on releasing their movies exclusively through Disney Plus. For example, the live action portrayal of “Mulan” was $30 on top of the subscription fee when it was released on the platform in September.

“Trolls World Tour” was one of the first movies to hit the market during the lockdown. It premiered April 10, 2020 and was available on Apple TV for $20. Despite the circumstances, “Trolls World Tour” generated

around 50 million dollars in its first weekend.

In light of films being released on streaming services and still making significant profits, audiences still find the quality of programs to be exceptional.

Viewing is still steady because many movies were highly anticipated, and now there’s no need to go out when the movies are accessible from home.

Additionally, many television shows were delayed or even cancelled all together. Netflix shows like “The Society” and “I Am Not Okay With This”, both originally renewed for second seasons, were cancelled.

Fans worldwide hope that the once cancelled shows will be able to make an appearance after the pandemic is over.

“We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID-19,” creator of “The Society” Christopher Keyser said.

Still, many shows were able to continue on with production and are taking serious safety measures.

“Riverdale” is one of them. The CW is releasing new episodes weekly and even renewed “Riverdale” for a sixth season amidst the pandemic. However, the show’s fourth season ended abruptly with an episode not intended to be the finale. After quarantining for 14 days the cast was able to begin shooting on Sept.

For students, living out their acting dreams is a priority after graduation ANNA PIPINOS Lifestyle Editor

A

lthough many of us once had the aspiration to become an actor or actress, only a few have continued to follow their dreams of being in the spotlight. Two of these rare individuals walk amongst us in our halls, seniors Cartney McGuigan and Wayne Hudson.

As the final days of their senior year continue to slowly tick away, McGuigan and Hudson have stayed hard at work, preparing themselves for the journey that awaits them.

“Once I had started high school, I had taken it upon myself to watch as many movies as possible and take classes that reflect my devotion to acting. I am also in ‘Mamma Mia!’at school right now, and I’m an intern at The Rose [Theater],” Hudson said.

Musical director Megan Swain has no doubt that Hudson’s countless hours of practicing, movie watching, and rehearsing have helped him further refine his acting talent.

“Wayne has had an incredible mastery for acting from a very young age. He has a feel for what messages need to be conveyed and knows how to go about doing it. Wayne’s charisma, his confidence, and eagerness to learn are all factors that set him apart from the rest,” Swain said.

After high school, both McGuigan and Hudson hope to pursue their dreams, but both want to go about it in different directions. McGuigan’s plan involves moving to Los Angeles to begin her acting career right away.

“I plan on moving to LA in September and not going to college, which scares me because I don’t know if not going to college is the best decision out there. I

am just going to try and see if it works out,” McGuigan said.

Although McGuigan is hesitant, Swain believes that her devotion to working hard and earning what she deserves will bring her success in the industry.

“I think Cartney has a wonderful sense of drive.

She will not stop until she has the answers, or has made improvement. She is quick to ask questions and find success in everything she does,” Swain said.

However, even with her concerns, McGuigan remains determined in pursuing her lifelong dream in the film industry, as it is a field that touches many hearts.

“The film industry obviously has some dark parts about it, but I also just love how people use it to benefit others by creating a handful of movies that have shown stories that may have never been told otherwise,” McGuigan said.

Like McGuigan, Hudson plans on moving to Los Angeles. However, before he travels to the City of Angels, he intends on studying acting at Columbia College in the fall.

And as fall approaches, the two have taken it upon themselves to begin to weigh their options regarding what types of movies or television shows they’d like to be a part of in the film industry.

“I have started to realize that theater is not my favorite, and I’m not capable of seeing myself continuing on with it. I believe that the way that film tells stories is better than the way theater does, as it feels more captivating,” McGuigan said.

With the fiery ambitions to pursue a job in the film industry, Hudson and McGuigan continue to daydream about the six simple words they hope to hear one day: “Take one. Ready, set, and action!”

Refelecting on what Endometriosis Month means to me

There’s a lot I wish I could tell

my younger self: do not get bangs, stop investing all my savings in DuctTape, and maybe spend less time planning my wedding with Zayn Malik. But if I had one thing Bridget Neville to tell 11-year-old Bridget, I’d want Front Page Editor her to know to trust in herself.

I am chronically ill. More than just a cold every now and then or the stomach flu once a year. It’s years spent bent over in pain, fainting, sobbing, just wanting an end to this pelvic aching.

When I was in sixth grade, my first period came with more pain than I could have imagined. I fainted, threw up, and had to miss school because of the intensity of my pain.

After telling my mom, I went to see a doctor. Immediately, I was met with uncertainty from this professional I was supposed to trust. They believed that my pain wasn’t there, or not there to the extent that I said it was.

As a socially awkward and all-around terrified 11-year-old, becoming an advocate for myself felt like the worst possible option. But my pain was too much for me to keep living without treatment, let alone validation that my pain exists. So, I began fighting for a diagnosis.

After years of being told that my pain is a product of my anxiety, I stopped believing in myself. I allowed my pain to continue without a second thought. I convinced myself that if my physicians don’t believe me, why should I believe myself ?

Six years went by, and my pain was getting worse.

I continued to miss school and my condition still wasn’t being taken seriously. Finally, in the fall of my senior year, I got the confirmation of my suspected diagnosis.

And this somehow scared me even more than the years

without a cause.

Being diagnosed, while validating, confirmed everything that I had feared for the past six years. This pain is real, it’s incurable, and it’s sticking with me for the rest of my life.

I have endometriosis. Endo-me-tree-oh-sis. A chronic pain condition resulting from the growth of endometrial tissue outside of the uterus. Because the excess tissue has no way to exit the body, it becomes trapped and causes excruciating pain. Other side effects include infertility, heavy and irregular menstrual cycles, and gastrointestinal issues.

Frequently, I romanticize what my life could have been. Of course what it could have been if I wasn’t born sick, but more frequently, what my life would have been like if I was listened to. If the medical world trusted me; if I could have trusted myself.

However, this isn’t just my struggle. Women’s pain isn’t being listened to. In fact, according to a 2008 Sage Journal study, physicians are more likely to interpret men’s symptoms as organic, and the same symptoms in women as psychological. And data from a SpeakEndo article states that although 1 in 10 people of menstruating age have endometriosis in the United States, it takes approximately 6 to 10 years to receive a diagnosis.

Every March is Endometriosis Awareness Month.

Thirty days spent validating the struggles of the people living with this condition. Thirty days to support and uplift people with not just Endometriosis, but all invisible illnesses, who have spent years being told that their claims are fabricated. Thirty days to learn how to advocate for yourself and others.

I am 1 in 10. One of the ten people in the United States living with endometriosis, living with constant, incurable, and sometimes debilitating pain. I am one of the ten people who has been ignored and belittled on the exam table, and I am one of the ten people who is choosing to continue fighting every day.

So, middle school Bridget. I wish you could have understood that what you’re feeling is real, despite seemingly everyone telling you that it isn’t. However, I think this experience has shaped you into the outspoken advocate you are. Don’t lose hope in yourself yet—but maybe stop waiting for Zayn Malik to marry you.

ENDOMETRIOSIS AWARENESS MONTH IS EVERY MONTH Ways to actively be an advocate for women with endometriosis

Educate Yourself:

One of the best ways to advocate for someone with endometriosis is to become knowledegable on the topic. This brings people one step closer to understanding.

Support Organizations:

There are many organizations that are currently supporting someone with endometriosis. Some include Endometriosis Foundation of America and Endometriosis Assosiation.

Social Media:

Help be a voice for the community. The spread of awareness is helped significantly when everyone is an active participant in spreading the word.

Be Mindful:

Realize that you will never be in the shoes of someone with endometriosis and that it is important to always be supportive through their struggles.

Unrealistic expectations cause negative mental health effects in students

of my tennis tournament, but along with the pressure that usually comes with a deciding point, half of me was distracted, thinking about how parents and Mahika Kanchanam my coach would feel if I lost this match.

Staff Writer Would I be living up to their expectations, their hopes for me? Considering others’ expectations isn’t always negative, perception is a natural sensation. However, this becomes a problem when we attach too much significance to those expectations.

Soon enough, I started noticing myself asking this question for almost everything: my grades, piano, dance.

My motivation to achieve something started to shift from “this is something I want to do” to “this is what people expect from me”. That fear of not living up to someone else’s hopes consumed me, and I started to chase the idea of pleasing others.

According to an article from “Psychology Today”, “By trying to please everyone, we end up pleasing no one—ourselves included.”

In reality, I felt really good about that tennis

match. I gave a good fight, and I did my best. However, the thought of not achieving what I believed others expected of me tore me down. It was the same with my academics. If we had harder tests, I wasn’t proud of my 85% because someone else thought I would’ve gotten 100%.

According to Manhattan Mental Health Counseling, the expectations of others can cause inner conflict because they are often—unrealistic, contradictory, and don’t fit what is right for you.

The expectations others have for you aren’t based on your abilities or goals but their imagination and experience. This often leads to unfair expectations that we’ll always fail.

Every individual will expect something different from you, so it’s important to understand that these expectations can often be contradictory and you can’t live up to all of them.

When it came to my mental health, the same sentiments lingered. At school, I was the nice kid. I always had a smile on my face and was full of positivity. I didn’t want people to think otherwise, so I bottled up my emotions. I started having sleepless nights, and I started to struggle with focusing on my school work.

Because my motivation was now driven by what others thought of me, I had a breaking point and fell into a dangerous cycle. I would procrastinate, cram everything in the end, and then feel guilty about it. I was no longer self-driven. The only thing that mattered was the perception that other had of me.

According to Manhattan Mental Health Counsel-

ing, the placement of unreasonable amount of importance to these expectations could also lead to anger, resentment, mental health issues, and indecisiveness.

As I started to realize what I was getting myself into, I tried to look for ways to get out of that cycle.

“Healthdirect” cites four ways to restore that motivation: remember why you wanted to set your goal in the first place, make sure you’re breaking your goal into smaller achievable goals, take a break when you need it, and find motivation from others who have similar goals as you do.

Setting smaller goals helps you better track your progress in order to keep yourself motivated. In addition, when you achieve a goal, you should make sure to reward yourself for your hard work.

Using some of these pointers, I was able to push my way back up. I stopped dancing in a class environment for a little bit, and just did it on my own because I loved it. I stopped playing in tennis tournaments and just played with a friend for fun.

Taking a break from a competitive environment helped me rediscover why I loved what I loved. This helped restore my motivation, and I started to live up to the expectations I had for myself.

The most important thing for me was recognizing what I had achieved and being proud of it regardless of how others felt about it. We should be working hard not so we can look perfect in the eyes of others, but for ourselves and our goals.

Live up to the expectations you set for yourself, not the expectations others set for you.

to redirect your thoughts. Post small reminders in your office, in your home, and anywhere you spend a significant amount of time.

Finding best noodles in honor of National Noodle Month AIDAN LEWALD Staff Writer s the days passed during Millard’s six-day break, I fueled up my 2009 Acura TL, Akira, made sure my bank account was not completely dry, and finally began to prepare my stomach for a very important endeavor.

As I drove on the snowy roads in the despicably low temperatures, I searched for one thing and one thing only: noodles, specifically the best noodle place in Omaha.

My first stop was Noodles and Company, a classic. As I entered the warm restaurant, I was immediately greeted by happy workers.

I ordered a regular-sized Wisconsin Mac and Cheese, the price being $6.25, plus tax and 20% tip.

As I sat on the bar stools, waiting for my to-go order to be delivered, I observed the familiar restaurant.

The modern atmosphere with dim lighting and the familiar earth tones brought a calming sensation as I waited for my noodles. The store was fairly empty, other than the occasional guest enjoying their noodles in the dining area.

As I’m scanning the restaurant, I hear a loud, yet calm “Aiden?” being called from the counter. As I checked my phone, I saw that it had only been four minutes since I had ordered.

The second I arrived back home and entered my household, I dug into my mac and cheese like I hadn’t eaten in decades.

The meal itself was delicious. With each bite, I was filled with deliciously melted cheese and perfectly cooked and seasoned noodles.

The comfortable childhood classic most definitely satisfied every ounce of hunger in my freezing body.

able to come the conclusion that this serving of noodles was absolutely perfect.

My second stop was Yoshi-Ya Ramen, a ramen shop in Flagship Commons.

After staring at the menu filled with scrumptious choices for several minutes, I purchased the most popular ramen they offer, the Tonkotsu Ramen.

This ramen had a base of chicken and pork broth, paired with park chashu, negi, corn, bacon rayu oil, and an ajitama egg.

The total came out to be $11 plus tax and tip. The wait time was slightly longer than Noodles and Company, coming out to be a total of nine minutes and 25 seconds.

The meal itself was extraordinary. Normally, I am not one to fully consume a large bowl of noodles, but I couldn’t help but lick this bowl clean.

The ramen was not too spicy, but it was not completely bland. It had the perfect mix of spices, along with cultural classics such as pork and ramen eggs.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this meal and already have plans to get my hands on another bowl soon—even if I do have to actually eat in the middle of a busy Flagship Commons instead of the comforts of my own home.

The third and final stop was Fazoli’s, where I got the infamous spaghetti with meat sauce paired with two delicious breadsticks.

This meal cost a total of $6.99 plus tax.

It took roughly five minutes to be given to me, which was surprisingly fast for a restaurant that was in the middle of their drive-thru dinner rush.

This meal was fairly mediocre compared to the first two, as it was fairly bland and had no distinct features.

Sadly, the best part of the meal was in fact not the noodles, but instead the buttery breadsticks from heaven.

However, the price and timeliness of the meal makes up for the somewhat average meal. If you’re looking for some mediocre pasta and revolutionary breadsticks, Fazoli’s is the place to go.

As my noodle adventure has come to an end, it is safe to say there are two very distinct winners here. If you are looking for the best possible noodles here in Omaha, the Noodles & Company and Yoshi-Ya Ramen are definitely the places to go.

The small light bulb moments led the author to create her novel, “Breaking the Ice.” Since her days of pencil grips and graphic erasers, Knutson has always expressed her love for the art of writing in any form. After four years, she now holds the position of president of the Writers’ Club and is in the progress of self-publishing three books.

Before eventually assuming the role as president of the Writer’s Club, Knutson first joined the club her freshman year. Since her initiation, Knutson has been deeply committed. “[She] always put 100% into the club, she enthusiastically shares what she is writing about [and] she creates activities for the club,” Writers Club Sponsor Chris Carroll said.

Her passion for writing took off in 6th grade after just dabbling in character development and co-writing her first story with her best friend, Arthur.

Annually, Knutson submits and performs a poem at the “Living the Dream” competition that’s sponsored by the City of Omaha and is held on Martin Luther King’s Day. She secured the first place spot in the song group and runner-up in the poem class at this year’s competition. The competition comes with cash prizes that Knutson plans to use towards college fees and costs.

Knutson’s realization that she wanted to be an author was triggered one morning while reading a story on the popular app Wattpad.

While reading through hundreds of creative stories Knutson was approached with a thought, why hasn’t anybody come up with an idea and given me a book that I want to read? From there, Knutson birthed the pseudonym K.A. Knutson, and now, just a few years later, Knutson is set to publish her novel on May 19th, 2021.

“They got me into the habit of asking myself why this relates to me,” Knutson said. “By doing that helped shape me by writing into a more complex style.”

She writes the story that she wants to read without regard for censorship. In her writing, Knutson talks about certain social issues covering social identity, sexuality, LGBTQ+, and personal growth while incorporating unique concepts and differentiating plots.

In her novel, “Breaking the Ice’’, a young boy struggles with keeping a secret from the world while discovering himself through his passion.

He struggles with identifying the difference between romantic relationships and companionship and has to navigate life in a house of eight kids, in a world of stereotypes and insensitivity.

London finds peace in his passion and harmony in his new friendship. The six-part disquisition covers multiple points of view and includes unique syntax to tell a complex story that everyday people live on a daily basis.

“I call it contemporary romance and sports,” Knutson said. “It’s a rare genre but combines my favorite categories into one.”

Behind the fictional character is her best friend, Arthur, who is the basis for London, the main character.

“He’s an inspiration with everything he’s been through and is actually the inspiration behind the main character,” Knutson said, She dedicates the novel to Arthur including a simple note on the beginning dedication page “has the right to be heard.”

Kaylee Knutson started by writing short stories with her best friend, Arthur, during her middle school years to self-publish her very own novel her senior year of high school. She uses inspiration for her writing style through the creative works of not only anime but also the creative reads on the app Wattpad.

Many teachers in her life have instilled tips to her process in order to better progress more complex and well-rounded stories. Her new novel, “Breaking the Ice”, is her first step to becoming a household name. By early May, Knutson is anticipating the pre-order and expects to officially release “Breaking the Ice.”

Knutson grew up being raised by her two loving moms in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin before moving to Omaha, Nebraska.

Like many other troubled writers, she is currently knee-deep in other works she is writing. When she isn’t writing, she’ll probably be watching anime. For example, you may find her wacthing Boku No Hero, Haikyuu!, and Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun! If not watching anime, Knutson will be reading, snuggling with her dog, playing video games, hanging with her friends, or just going to school.

The spring musical adapts to restrictions placed due to COVID-19 SNEHA SELVARAJ Staff Writer

M

oments before the musical begins, performers are usually rushing to get their hair done, sharing last minute snacks, and practicing vocal exercises together.

Senior Mia Vander Zwaag fondly reflects on a tradition called “Pass the Power” in which all the actors would stand in a circle holding hands, sharing what they wanted to accomplish before giving each other last minute hugs.

This tradition is not a possibility anymore.

Originally set to premiere in the fall, the school musical “Mamma Mia!” has had to adjust to a multitude of restrictions due to COVID-19.

The musical follows a woman preparing a wedding for her daughter, who secretly invites three men from her mother’s past. She hopes to meet her real father and have him escort her down the aisle on her big day.

To put on this performance, everyone involved in the musical feels they are going to have to step out of their comfort zones. While many of the students now have experience acting with masks on, singing is a whole new challenge. Everyone has to rely on their eyes to communicate the emotions that are now shielded by their masks.

“It has been strange singing with masks on. It changes the way that your voice projects and muffles your sound a lot,” Vander Zwaag said. “It’s also hard getting the right amount of air in if you are supposed to sing a high note or yell loud.”

It isn’t just the actors struggling to adjust. Other crew members and the set designers have also had to modify the way they work. Departments have become significantly smaller due to conflicts in schedules with spring sports and students learning from home.

As the chief of the make-up team, senior Bella Amato has taken on the challenge of doing students’ makeup with masks and distance. w

Make-up artists must consistently wash their hands, sanitize brushes, have wipes on them at all times, and keep masks on. In an effort to stop cross-contamination, the same artists are assigned to the same actors everytime.

To make masks less noticeable, the make-up department will be ordering skin-toned cloths and might possibly design them. Amato admits that while COVID restrictions have been an inconvenience, they have forced her team to be creative in new ways.

“This gave the department an extra push to make sure everyone was sanitary and everything in the theater department was clean,” Amato said. “I think it’s a really good wake-up call that we have these precautions always.”

Some groups like the props department haven’t seen significant changes in their roles but instead have struggled with the loss of social interaction that makes the theatre community a tight-knit group.

“One big change is that, as a crew, we don’t get to do much bonding due to the risk of spreading COVID,” senior Becca Humpus said. “It would be nice to hang out and get to know my new techies.”

Despite the difficulties, every department in the musical said they are just as determined to put on a high-quality performance to end the year. Their opening is scheduled for the last weekend of April, and they hope that COVID will be manageable enough to have larger, in-person performances.

Whether or not this happens, however, everyone involved is still excited to be a part of the musical.

“The process of putting together a show and incorporating everyone’s creative abilities is incredibly rewarding,” drama teacher Michelle Wiliamson said. “The success of our students putting together a professional looking production and learning about theatre, makes me so proud.”

t’s no secret, record-setting teams go through record-setting droughts. With returning seniors graduating, new freshmen, and a new season; the girls soccer team is looking to climb their way back up the mountain.

With spring sports officially starting March 1, head coach James Abueg is looking forward to kicking off the season.

“I’m excited, because we didn’t get to have a spring season last year. I’m [looking forward] to hit[tting] the ground running,” Abueg said.

As last year’s season abruptly ended after only five practices, the girls are looking forward to starting off strong.

“I intend to start fast with no brakes,” senior all position player Sena Ahovissi said. “With my sophomore season going 8-9 and not having one last year, we are more than ready and eager to get on the field again to compete.”

Abueg’s main focus for this season is not skill or play, but motivating his players and building team chemistry.

“The main motivation is playing for each other, wanting everyone to have success,” Abueg said. “That would be pushing each other hard at practice and us as coaches pushing them to be and want to be successful.”

While on-the-field chemistry is important, off-thefield friendship elevates the team to a new level.

“On the field chemistry is what makes a good team, a championship team,” assistant coach Aaron Harding said. “When teams have good chemistry and know each others playing styles, it makes the little thigns so much easier.”

The team began their journey to unity by attending pre-season conditioning and participating in indoor soccer.

“With preseason, we have conditioning where the girls can get closer and new incoming [players] can start to meet new people and interact more,” Ahovissi said.

“Indoor too gives us, the seniors, another chance to get to know our teammates and build that bond for the season.”

With returning players having worked together before, they are heading the program and leading the way for their younger teammates.

“I didn’t get to play my freshman season because of COVID,” sophomore outside back Bhavya Krishnan said. “Even though preseason conditioning and the one week of practice we had. I made great memories with my friends and teammates. The [returning players] are so welcoming and encouraging, [pushing us] to be better every time.”

Though these preseason activities are primarily soccer-focused, it helps them grow together as team dinners and game days are fast approaching.

“Team dinners are important because it gives us a space to bond outside of practice and without our coaches. They bring us closer and everyone loves them,” Ahovissi said.

With the base of their mountain built on their unity as a team, they are ready to begin their journey back to a state-caliber team.

“The biggest thing is climb[ing] the mountain. We won a state title in 2018, and then didn’t have a very good season in 2019,” Abueg said. “We got knocked off the top of the mountain, and this is the year we have to climb the mountain and make a statement.”

As emotions are high, the girls are ready to take on the season together, journeying back to summit.

Ultimately, losing the 2020 state championship game brought the Mustangs closer together and gave them the extra drive to finish their “unfinished business”. As underclassmen and coaching staff look to the future, the team will rely on the culture they’ve built this season.

Despite losing four out of five graduating starters to college basketball programs, the Mustangs are remaining positive. The team knows their success can continue if they rely on their skill, hard work, and most importantly, the relationships they’ve formed as a family.
