“Anne” iversary

“Anniversary” has the meaning “year” embedded in it.

The word comes from the Latin “annus” which means “year” and “versus,” which means “to turn” So, an anniversary marks the turning of a year. That’s why it’s better to say we’re celebrating our 4th anniversary instead of our 4-year anniversary.

Interesting fact – you can drop the year reference when saying Happy x Anniversary if you included it when using the greeting as your norm. I know I did.

My anniversaries reference my personal milestones–and that is important to me. We all accomplish milestones in our own way, in our own time. Every obstacle you overcome in your journey becomes a milestone. An occasion for further triumph.

Birth, marriage, and death are important life anniversaries but there are so many others to honour: historic happenings, moments in a relationship, graduations, work anniversaries, the anniversary of a major health triumph or recovery, moving into a new house, conquering a fear, etc.

Any milestone, at whatever age and circumstance, is something to be proud of.

By the way, Anne is my middle name. My mother’s name is Anne. I have been estranged from her and my father since December 8th, 2013. This is an anniversary I always remember since it was the day I took back my own life and started living on my terms.
