Solar powered roads pave way to the future

Could cement and asphalt be outdated? Julie and Scott Brusaw think so.

Founders of Solar Roadways, the Brusaws began working on a project back in 2006 that could spring road construction into the future - solar-powered roadway panels.

They were awarded a contract from the Federal Road and Highway Administration to build two prototypes, which were finished in 2014.

This technology is said to be used for roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, playgrounds and any other recreational surface that traditionally uses asphalt or concrete.

The solar panels are made with new tempered glass material that meets the requirements and weight standards for roadways. Additionally, each solar panel is made with as much recycled material as possible.

Instead of the traditional square shape of a solar panel, solar roadways use a hexagon-shaped panel aligned in a honeycomb pattern to form the road.

Because each panel is an individual unit, if one is damaged it can be quickly replaced, unlike traditional roadways, where maintenance can take hours to complete.

However, RSC’s Daniel Ratcliff, professor of environmental science, said this is not the most efficient way of implementing this technology.

“They’re trying to hype it up,” Ratcliff said.

The panels also have a temperature control feature to stay above freezing, preventing ice from forming on the roadway.

“Where they’re going to have more benefit is from the safety aspect in wintertime.”

These panels produce clean energy, which could significantly lower societal dependence on fossil fuels. They are self-sufficient and can run on their own, with minimal maintenance, immediately after installation.

After 10 years of designing and testing, the Brusaws are entering the field test stage.

The field test will take place in Missouri on one of the most famous stretches of road in America, the one and only Route 66. The Missouri Department of Transportation plans to put in a 12-by-20 stretch of solar panels on the historic highway.

If the solar panels perform similarly in the field as they did in the lab tests, this could be a big step in implementing efficient renewable energy sources. But, beyond the field test stage, these panels could cost more than they are truly worth.

“There’s nothing for free. There will be an enormous amount of cost to put these in roads,” Ratcliff said. “They will have a negative return of investment.”

• Located in Rooms 215-217 of the Child Development Center, the Tutoring Center is a resource for students who need help with most general education classes such as English, social sciences, math and science.

Students are allowed four hours a week in one-on-one tutoring, with appointments available in 30-minute or hour-long installments.

Students can sign-up for a tutor at any time through rose.mywconline.com or visit the tutoring center for assistance.

Tutoring sessions can be scheduled between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday though Friday as tutors are available and appointments can be scheduled up to four weeks in advance.

The STEM Lab, another service of the Tutoring Center, can be found in Room 201 of the Engineering building. Open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays, students can stop in to study for their science and math classes and receive one-on-one assistance from the lab assistants.

Students also have access to 24/7 online tutoring services through tutor.com, which is accessible through D2L and provides assistance with the same classes available through the Tutoring Center and more.

• Along with the Tutoring Center, the Humanities Division offers assistance with essays, grammar and other reading and composition questions through their Reading and Writing Labs located in Rooms 117 and 137 of the Humanities Building.

Students have access to one-on-one assistance with professors and lab assistants as well as access to software such as Merit Software for grammar and vocabulary assistance.

• The Student Success Center in the Student Services Building, Room 100 exists to help connect students with campus resources to help them succeed.

Each semester they offer Student Success Workshops that cover topics that address a wide variety of student issues such as study groups, math anxiety and even tips for budgeting success. Workshops frequently feature drawings for prizes and free lunches.

The center also offers such services as study skills assistance, learning style assessments and academic advisement.

College is often seen by incoming students as an extension of high school. This perception can leave students unprepared for the challenging differences that both college coursework and instructors provide students.

Thankfully, RSC provides students with a wide variety of services and resources that can both reduce student stress and help guarantee academic success.

Services such as the Student Success Center located in the Student Services Building are often overlooked by students as a resource to overcome academic stumbling blocks.

• The Library not only provides students with a quiet place to study, it also features a computer lab, a reference and a circulation desk and more than 40 online databases students can use for research for class assignments.

For students less savvy on research skills, the library technical assistants and staff are available to help students navigate online databases, search the circulation and reference collections for relevant materials and provide students guidance on reliable and scholarly resources.

“We are always willing to help students find the resources they are looking for. We may not have all the answers, but we try our best to find them,” said Melissa Huffman, director of library resources and services.

While undergoing a significant renovation, the LRC has been relocated to the University Center until Spring 2016.

• The counseling services offered by the Office of Special Services and Student Outreach is another valuable resource available for both students and faculty. Located in Room 101 of the Student Services Building, the counseling services are designed to allow students to discuss concerns, anxieties or any other issues in a safe and confidential environment.

• For students that require special accommodations for classes, testing or housing, the Office of Disability Services located in the Child Development Center, Room 109 can help ensure that these needs are met.

For accommodations, students are required to bring documentation of a disability or medical condition, such as an individualized educational plan or medical documentation.

“It needs to have something that says what the student’s disability is and preferably how the disability affects daily life,” said Adaptive Technology Specialist Elizabeth Tabak.

“We received a beautiful ’57 Chevy from a generous donor who wanted to give us a unique way to raise funds for student scholarships,” Mikeman said.

The expansion of the event is keeping in line with the Foundation’s goal of drawing greater community involvement in the event for the upcoming 75th anniversary and as a way to increase RSC’s own involvement in the community.

The event originally began in May 2015 as a way to honor the memory of Midwest City’s founder W.P. “Bill” Atkinson and his wife Rubye Atkinson.

The Atkinsons hosted events at their pony barn that would include the whole community, with Shetland pony rides serving as the highlight for the local children.

In celebration of Midwest City’s 74th anniversary, the RSC Foundation will host its second annual Heritage Day 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Sept. 10 at the Atkinson Heritage Center.

Last year, more than 200 community members participated in the western-themed event that featured pony rides, historical reenactments, a petting zoo and other family-friendly activities.

In addition to last year’s activities, this year’s event will include food trucks, tables promoting local businesses and organizations and other activities geared at increasing community involvement, according to the Foundation.

“This year the family-friendly event has grown, and we are wanting to share all the exciting opportunities Midwest City has to offer,” said Cindy Mikeman, executive director of the Foundation and Resource Development.

Table registration requires a $25 fee and provides community members with two chairs and a table for use under a large covered tent designated for that purpose.

Tables are permitted to sell goods, distribute promotional materials and free samples and perform demonstrations and other activities, but bake sales are restricted due to regulations within the state’s health code.

The event will also feature the conclusion of the Foundation’s 1957 Chevrolet Fundraising Raffle. The event has been ongoing since last semester as

Update on LRC: Renovation near completion

A little more than a year after closing for renovation, the campus’ Learning Resources Center is entering the final stages of the drywalling process and is expected to be operational by early spring semester.

Featuring an 8,000 square foot expansion, the new additions will include a cafe, group study rooms and other collaborative work spaces as well as quiet areas for study and research.

“It will be a great space for our students, faculty, staff and guests to study, collaborate, read or relax,” said Chris Meyer, dean of the LRC. While logistics are still being worked out, one of the hopes for the new LRC will be to allow students the opportunity to access study and social areas early in the morning when other services are still closed.

The completed structure will also be more compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and include features more accessible for disabled students, such as an elevator on each side of the LRC and family restrooms for students who might require assistance.

The college’s Tutoring Center will be located on the second floor and will feature an increased area for tutoring sessions as well as house the STEM Lab, the rebranded version of the Math Lab. “There will be plenty of space for us to spread out, and we’ll be able to accommodate more tutors and, therefore, more students as well,” said Tutoring Center Supervisor Liz Nalagan.

The return to the LRC will also see the Tutoring Center changing its hours of operation from the currently curtailed 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday-Friday to 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.

- 5 p.m. on Fridays and 3-8 p.m. on Sundays.

Another significant change is the relocation of the Office of Special Services and Student Outreach from Room 101 of the Student Services Building to the first floor of the LRC. “We’re excited the move will bring together the major programs of Special Services and Student Outreach, personal counseling as well as Disability Services into the same office suite,” said Joanne Stafford, director of Special Services and Student Outreach.

The new office will feature a waiting room with greater privacy and an additional office that can be used for a counseling intern and group counseling sessions, according to Stafford.

Closed since June 2015, the LRC was the most extensive renovation project made possible by a $22 million bond approved for structural updates in 2013 by Midwest City and Del City. For the duration of the renovation, the LRC’s services were relocated to the University Center, the former Child Development Laboratory, the Business Division building and elsewhere across campus.

“We appreciate the patience and support of all the college staff to help us move to our present locations, and the ideas and patience of the students in helping plan the renovation and putting up with the inconvenience of shifting our services to all parts of campus,” Meyer said.

Initially predicted to be completed during the Fall 2016 semester, the discovery of water damage to the original structure extended the remodeling process.

With a tentative completion date sometime early next semester, Meyers said finishing touches are likely to still be made into the semester as well.

Webb says RSC to rise above budget cuts

by Christian Tabak Assistant Editor The impact of the college’s budget cuts and revenue deficits were an overarching theme for the fall semester’s Convocation. RSC President Jeanie Webb and Executive Vice President Kent Lashley touched on these and other aspects of the state of the budget at their addresses during the three-day event.

Webb encouraged faculty and staff to remain positive for the future at her opening address held on Aug. 17 at the H.B. Atkinson Theatre.

Opening with singer-songwriter Andra Day’s inspiring “Rise Up” playing in the background, she went on to emphasize that RSC was on the path to rising above the difficulties of the past year.

“We will rise up and we have to have motivation and we have to stay positive, because that’s who we are,” she said.

Webb went on to say that RSC would not only rise, but that she wholeheartedly believes that the college would become the top community college in the nation.

With enrollment up by 7 percent, high attendance for the campus’ Snapshot orientation and the LRC on track to be finished in the spring, Webb underlined the important role the community has played in supporting the college.

She then went on to detail how the state’s billion dollar budget shortfall has had a dramatic impact on the college’s financial situation. The state’s higher education budget was cut by 16 percent and RSC’s share of the cut was more than $3.2 million.

“Anyway you slice it, it has been a very frustrating year,” Webb said.

“We would have to go back to the ‘80s to find less funding from the state.”

In response, the college was forced to cut 40 positions, cut several programs and increase tuition and fees by a staggering 12.9 percent.

Despite these measures, the college’s budget continues to sit at a $1.7 million deficit.

Presenting alongside Ray Blanke, senior director of Fiscal Services, Lashley’s budget update presentation hosted Aug. 18 at the Professional Training Center took a different approach for the topic.

Opening with Star Wars’ infamous “Imperial March,” both acknowledged that the past year’s tough decisions had caused them and other key financial decision makers to appear in an antagonistic light.

Lashley discussed was the move to increase tuition rates by more than 12 percent. In dollar value, the amount is a $9.16 increase per credit hour. Several fees were also increased and a new security fee was introduced as well.

One of the fees highlighted by Blanke was the increase for the student facility fee, which he said was increased in the hopes of raising more than $500,000 for other capital projects across campus.

Despite the college’s initiatives to increase funding, Lashley emphasized that the campus administration and the regents continue to recognize RSC as a non-profit entity.

“We are a mission-oriented, service-minded institution, so every budget Ray builds really should have a zero net result,” Lashley said.

He reiterated that the college’s enrollment numbers are up for the second semester in a row and that RSC continues to remain one of the most affordable colleges in the state even in spite of the tuition increases.

Campus clubs offer fellowship for every interest

What can benefit others, benefit yourself and enhance your field of study all at the same time? One of RSC’s various clubs could be the answer. Are you a whiz with numbers? Science cat got your tongue? The STEM club, short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics may be just the club for you.

“Our STEM club members are actively engaged in outreach activities to inspire K-12 students to be interested in STEM. We had members help with MyMachine this past spring, and the club is forming a Robotics Team and Drone Team for both competition and outreach purposes,” said Steven Fowler, coordinator of engineering and science.

Thought of school quickly approaching leaving you breathless?

Club Inspirare is for people interested in the profession of respiratory care.

“We participated in a lot of community events to promote the school and our club. More impor-

tantly, to support our respiratory profession,” said Club Adviser Rebecca Knox.

Is your calling for investing in the lives of children ages K-12?

The TEACH club served the community last year, collecting backpacks and school supplies to donate to local schools. The club offers tours of OU and UCO, teacher preparation programs and the opportunity to meet with educators of local schools.

For those looking for camaraderie with those who share similar interests and support your chosen path, there are a various number of clubs where you can become involved.

RSC is home to not only a large number of people beginning their journey through college, but also offers a large number of clubs supporting students and community.
