ABOUT THE PLAY SETTING Chamberlain, a small town in Western Maine. The present.
Carrie White is a shy, awkward senior at Chamberlain High, the target of her classmates’ cruelty at school and of her mother’s fierce religious control at home. After a humiliating incident in the girls’ locker room, Carrie begins to discover that she has a strange and growing power of her own. One classmate, Sue Snell, regrets her part in the bullying and asks her boyfriend, Tommy Ross, to take Carrie to the senior prom. Another, Chris Hargensen, has been barred from the prom for what she did, and is planning something very different with her boyfriend, Billy Nolan. Across one spring, Carrie reaches for an ordinary life, while her mother, Margaret, fears what that life will cost her. The story is framed by an interrogation. In the aftermath of prom night, Sue is questioned about what happened, and the evening unfolds through her memory.
CONTENT ADVISORY Carrie depicts bullying, religious and parental abuse, violence, and stage blood, and includes strong language.

FROM THE DIRECTOR What an experience this was. It’s a lot directing a show for your first time, let alone a musical, and double casting. This space lends a lot to experience if you let it, though. I had the opportunity to have my hands in every part of the show. From the obvious acting and blocking choices, to planning and building set pieces. Costumes, props, sounds, lights: there are a million and one things to be doing on any given day leading up to the show. I wasn’t in it alone, though. Madison Kelly was an absolute rockstar to work with. She had my back at every turn, and I would not have been able to bring this show together without her. The real joy of it all, though, was working with this cast. I’ve had the chance to get to know and be a part of so many wonderful people’s lives. Their excitement and energy around this production is what kept me coming in every day, through the chaos of it all. Thank you to the Rose State Theatre Department for trusting me to bring this show to life. Thank you to the cast for believing in my vision, for not being afraid to speak up when I was a little too ambitious, and for refreshing my love for this craft every day. Last but certainly not least, thank you to my amazing fiancé Abigail for supporting my dream and staying up late every night to spend what little time we could together.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS STEPHEN KING N OV E L
Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine, in 1947, and has set much of his work in the small towns of his home state. Carrie, published in 1974, was his first novel. He famously threw the early pages in the trash; his wife, Tabitha, pulled them out and urged him to finish it. Its success launched one of the most widely read careers in American fiction, including The Shining, It, Misery, and The Stand.
LAWRENCE D. COHEN B O O K
Lawrence D. Cohen wrote the screenplay for Brian De Palma’s 1976 film of Carrie, his first produced screenplay. He went on to adapt more horror for the screen, including Ghost Story (1981) and the 1990 television adaptation of King’s It. With his collaborators he spent decades with this story, writing the book for both the 1988 musical and its 2012 revision.
MICHAEL GORE M U S I C
Composer Michael Gore won two Academy Awards for the 1980 film Fame: Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for “Fame,” written with Dean Pitchford. He also received an Oscar nomination for his score for Terms of Endearment.
DEAN PITCHFORD LY R I C S
Lyricist and screenwriter Dean Pitchford shared the Academy Award for the song “Fame” with Michael Gore. He wrote the screenplay and song lyrics for Footloose (1984), earning Oscar nominations for “Footloose” and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy.”
CARRIE · RSC THEATRE 17
FROM PAGE TO STAGE 1974
Doubleday publishes Carrie, Stephen King’s first novel, told through news clippings, testimony, and a fictional inquiry into the events of prom night.
1976
Brian De Palma’s film, written by Lawrence D. Cohen, stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie and Piper Laurie as Margaret. Both were nominated for Academy Awards.
1988
The musical premieres in a co-production with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, then moves to Broadway’s Virginia Theatre. It closes after 16 previews and five performances, at a cost of about $8 million, and becomes the most famous flop in Broadway history. A book about Broadway failures takes its title from it: Not Since Carrie.
2012
Cohen, Gore, and Pitchford reworked the show almost entirely for an Off-Broadway revival at MCC Theater, directed by Stafford Arima, with Molly Ranson as Carrie and Marin Mazzie as Margaret. The new version trades the original’s spectacle for psychological drama and adds the interrogation frame you’ll see tonight.
2013 – today
The revised Carrie becomes available for licensing and quickly turns into a favorite of high school and college theatres, where its story of a teenager pushed too far lands with particular force.
