Pipeline protesting in OKC The Standing Rock Sioux tribe is protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline that was planned in 2014. The pipeline would transport as many as 570,000 barrels of crude oil daily from North Dakota to Illinois; however, the pipeline would be placed under the Missouri River, the primary drinking water source for the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration reported more than 3,300 leaks and ruptures since 2010, which is cause for concern surrounding the risk of the pipeline leaking. It would also run under sacred burial grounds. Proponents of the pipeline said preventative measures have been engineered to keep the pipeline from leaking into the river, according to Time Magazine. Construction of the pipeline continues, and protests are beginning to take place across the nation, including Oklahoma City, as individuals show their support for the Standing Rock Tribe.

Black Friday deals revealed

With Thanksgiving approaching, many overlook the traditions of the holidays in preparation for Black Friday.

Some stores will open earlier to allow customers to shop ‘till they drop.

Local retailers such as JCPenney’s will open Thanksgiving day at 3 p.m.

Kohl’s, Sears, Walmart, Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods will open at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Many stores have released the Black Friday ads early so shoppers can get an idea of what is to come. Printouts violate student’s rights?

The administration is relying on tacit approval to circumnavigate the law concerning social security numbers and names during the first few weeks of school.

Everyone has seen the large blue covers over computer printouts revealing students’ courses, their name and social security numbers.

Provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 make it unlawful to reveal a person’s social security number without his or her permission.

Joe Johnson, director of admissions, said everybody uses the same method for class schedules.

He said students’ names of the printout sheet will be omitted upon request. Dr. Mel Messer, director of admissions at OU, said OU prints only test scores and grades with the social security numbers. During add/drop the names and social security numbers are revealed to students along with their schedules for those who have misplaced the schedules during the summer.

Johnson inferred that students who sign an approval sheet to release their social security numbers and grades also give their permission for their names to be run in the fall printout.

First time students here have never signed a sheet giving permission to run their test grades.

This has not stopped the school from printing new students’ names and social security numbers with their schedules.

Do students give approval when they enroll in the school? Are their rights being violated every semester in spite of what the law says?

Last fall when informed about the practice, Dr. Joe Packnett, vice president of student affairs, said, “Class rosters now will be available in the Administration Building for students who have a need to check their schedules; however, this information will contain only the student’s name and schedule. There will be no other information included,” he said.

Packnett said this week, “Those students who wish their name be left out of the printout should contact the admissions office and their request will be honored.”

“In applying the balancing test in the Getman case, the Supreme Court considered the extent of the invasion of privacy and the public interest that would be served by disclosure, and whether the interest could be satisfied without the requested information in its efforts to accommodate both the right to privacy and the right to information.” (Page three, Freedom of Information Center Report, No. 371.)

The ORJC Policies and Procedures Manual should be amended to comply with the law in the cases of personal information. If the names of individuals were omitted from the printouts, then the law would be complied with, since the release of social security numbers only is not considered an invasion of privacy.

“I personally think that Thanksgiving is a holiday to be spent with family and stores opening up early are taking that precious time away. Companies who do this are basically saying family doesn’t matter, all that matters is making money.”

“I feel that stores shouldn’t be open on Thanksgiving because Thanksgiving is a day for family. If stores should be open, they should open in the morning Friday.”

“Depending on the individual’s situation, it could be beneficial for increasing income.”

Buffalo Chicken Dip

Seitan Pot Roast

Ingredients: 1 rotisserie chicken 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup of Frank’s Buffalo Sauce 1 cup of ranch dressing 8oz cream cheese

This Thanksgiving day recipe is a bit different, because this is a vegan adaptation of a classic Thanksgiving day dinner main course.

Step 1: Soften the cream cheese to make mixing easier.

Step 2: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Step 3: Shred the chicken and put into a mixing bowl along with the softened cream cheese, cheddar cheese, buffalo sauce and ranch.

Step 4: Place in oven for about 15 minutes Step 5: Enjoy!

Note: Ingredient measurements can be increased/decreased to liking. For example, buffalo sauce amount can increase if spiciness is a preference.

Elote Mexicano (Corn on the Cob Mexican Style) Ingredients: Corn Lime to taste Hot Chili Powder to taste Queso Fresco or Queso Cotija (finely grated) to taste Butter (optional) to taste Mayonnaise to taste Step 1: Cook corn and remove the husk (Add corn holders or a grill stick to end of the corn to make handling easier) Step 2: Brush butter and mayonnaise all over corn.

Step 3: Pour cheese and hot chili powder all over corn.

Step 4: Squeeze a small amount of lime on it, and it’s ready to eat.

No Bake Strawberry Cheesecake Ingredients: 1 graham cracker crust 1 box of Philadelphia Cream Cheese 1 tub of Cool Whip 1 tub of strawberry glaze 6 strawberries

Ingredients: 1 frozen banana ½ cup frozen berries ¼ cup of milk or water Step 1: Freeze banana and berries Step 2: Cut up your banana and add to blend

For the broth and vegetables: 4-5 carrots peeled and cut into half moons 2 parsnips peeled and cut into half moons 2 potatoes peeled and cut into 1 inch cubes 1 onion thinly sliced 4 cloves garlic crushed ¾ tsp thyme ¼ tsp liquid smoke 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 ½ cups vegetable broth ¼ cup white wine Salt and pepper to taste Mix all the dry ingredients together first, then add the ketchup and the 1 ¼ cups vegetable broth, making a dough that is slightly elastic so that it can be kneaded and formed into the desired shape.

Preheat a large saucepan over medium heat, add the garlic and onion with a slight amount of oil and sauté for three to five minutes before adding the carrots, parsnips and potatoes.

Cook for one to two minutes longer before placing the seitan in the middle with the vegetables arranged neatly around it, then add the soy sauce, vegetable broth, white wine and thyme.

Bring to a soft boil and then place a lid over the saucepan and turn the heat to low, allowing for the seitan to cook for 3-4 hours or until the roast is tender but no longer chewy or elastic.

Add desired amount of salt and pepper. This dish is now ready to be served.

Yule have a merry Christmas at this ghostly tale

BY KAT TABAK CIRCULATION MANAGER It is almost Christmastime again at Rose State, and as Christmas gets closer, Rose State Theatre will once again produce “A Christmas Carol.”

Theatre Professor Rick Nelson will direct and produce his adaption of the play.

“This is the second year in a row that RSC has done this production,” Nelson said. “There are 31 RSC students in the show plus eight additional children and guest actors.”

The story, written by Charles Dickens, is about a curmudgeonly old businessman, Ebeneezer Scrooge, who did not believe in Christmas spirit, showing kindness or giving charity to those around him.

However, when the spirit of his old business partner begins to haunt him, as well as the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future, Scrooge begins to have a change of heart and turns away from his cold, harsh, unkind ways.

“What a lot of people do not really think about or stop to consider is what made Scrooge into the person he is shown as being at the start of the play, because he [was not always] that way,” said Technical Director Martin Steger who will portray Scrooge on stage.

This is the second year Steger was cast as Ebeneezer Scrooge. As an actor, he is happy to play the role because he said he relates to his character.

This will be the final production from the Rose State Theatre department this semester. “A Christmas Carol” will open 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec.

2 and run Saturday, Dec. 3, as well as 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5. It will run again at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8 through Saturday, Dec. 10. The show will hold its final production at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11. All performances will be held in the Atkinson Theatre at Rose State.

Rose State students, faculty and staff receive free admission with an ID. General admission is $5 and $3 for non-RSC students.

The result of the election sparked emotional cords in many individuals across the nation, leading to multiple protests and riots. At least one person was shot and there have been videos that have surfaced depicting protesters burning the American flag. However, because the election was so controversial, there is reason to believe protests and riots would still be present if Clinton were President-Elect instead.

However, many politicians have publicly announced their support and encouraged protesters to give Trump a chance.

Trump will be inaugurated Jan. 20.

What is the Electoral College?

British writer G. K. Chesterton said, “Don’t ever take a fence down until you know the reason why it was put up.” A reasonable statement that still rings true today and should be applied to modern issues, in particular the Electoral College.

Over the past few election cycles, the Electoral College itself has gained more and more scrutiny from the public eye. A majority of this discontent comes from social media and people who clearly do not understand the workings of the Electoral College.

So let us shed some light on the matter by answering a few questions.

What exactly is the Electoral College and where does it come from?

As established in Article II of the Constitution, the members of the

Electoral College are voted for in November, and they vote for the President later that December.

Who’s in it?

The College is made up of 538 electorates sent from each state.

The number of electors is based upon the number of representatives and senators in Congress at that time. This means every state automatically gets two votes plus votes based on population. No matter how small the state they are guaranteed at least one population vote.

So I don’t vote for the president?

That’s right, you don’t. The aforementioned people that your state sent to represent you based on how you voted are the people who actually vote for the president.

How is this democracy?

Well, it’s not. One of the most common mistakes made about the

US government is its status as a democracy. When in fact, the government of the United States is a republic.

But isn’t it the same thing?!?

No, and another common mistake that was even made by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in Revenge Of The Sith. In a democracy everything is voted on by the people, while in a Democratic Republic we elect representatives to vote on our behalf for what they believe to be the best course of action for our nation.

Why even use the Electoral College? Why not make it a straight popular vote?

Think of it as another check and balance in the government. With a little study of history, it’s easy to see that pure democracy will cave in on itself over time. A popular way of explaining it.

Sooners tame Bears in Norman Cowboys light up scoreboard

by Austin Russell Staff Writer The Oklahoma Sooners have been on a huge roll the past few games and only continue to stand out and let people know who they are and what they are capable of. The Sooners took care of business this past Saturday when they defended their home field against the Baylor Bears. They knew they had to come into this game with the right mindset to win a football game, and that is exactly what they did.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield just keeps bringing his A-game in order for the Sooners to come out with a victory each and every game.

Mayfield had another great game this past weekend when he threw for 20-of-25 passes, 300 yards with one touchdown through the air and added one score on the ground as well.

The returning running back Joe Mixon made a comeback from being suspended last game, and he looked as good as usual. He had 14 carries for 124 yards including one touchdown. Running back Samaje Perine also come back but did not play many minutes because of the injury and coaches are slowly trying to get him back to 100 percent. Wide receiver Dede Westbrook came to play with four catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

The Sooners increased their record to 8-2 and are going to Morgantown, West Virginia to battle the Mountaineers and it will be a tough match up because of West Virginia’s record of 8-1. The Sooners will have to come ready to play like they have the last few games in order to increase their record and continue to move up in the rankings.

This past Saturday, the Oklahoma State Cowboys took on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Stillwater and came away with a nail-biting 45-44 win that keeps the Cowboys Big 12 Championship hopes alive. The Cowboys would quickly jump out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter, but the Red Raiders would come roaring back to tie the game at the half 28-28 after a 21-7 quarter of their own.

The second half would be more of the same as the Cowboys came out the gate strong to take the lead, but the Red Raiders would come back and score what looked to be the game tying touchdown run with 1:44 left in the game until kicker Clayton Hatfield missed the key extra point.

The Red Raiders were then forced to kick an onside kick in which the Cowboys would recover and run out the clock sealing the win. The Cowboys offense came up huge as they rolled up 605 yards of total offense and 27 first downs. Quarterback Mason Rudolph had a really strong performance going 20-28 for 395 yards and two touchdowns through the air and added another one on the ground.

Running back Justice Hill continued to make history as his 18-carry, 126-yard, one touchdown performance made him the first freshman running back in Cowboys history to have four 100yard rushing games.

Senior running back Chris Carson also had a solid game, adding in 73 yards and a touchdown run of his own. Wide receiver James Washington continued his strong play, hauling in six catches for 158 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Chris Lacey also had a strong game, snagging four catches for 100 yards.

The Cowboys defense will have to improve after allowing 518 yards and the offense will have to keep up their strong play if they want to come out on top against TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, this Saturday.

Club Sp tlight: American Indian Association

by Marshall Niles Staff Writer Oklahoma, the state in which the name derives from two Choctaw words “okla” and “humma,” meaning “red people.” Our state has a rich Native American history. Are you of Native American descent, or interested in Native American history? If so, you should check out the American Indian Association at Rose State College.

Club President Lisa Brown said anyone on campus can join the club whether or not they are Native.

Brown also stated the mission/purpose of the club is to “focus on the culture of Native American students, offer assistance to help students be successful, work with faculty members and administrators to help make RSC the Native American Studies Center of Oklahoma City, increase the enrollment of Native American students by actively recruiting Native Americans interested in higher education, work toward decreasing the attrition rate among

Native American students while attending RSC by offering tutors for those students in need of assistance and to provide a social environment for RSC Native American students and those interested in the Native American culture.”

Brown said the club’ thinks “we are stronger together. We all come from different tribes, and different history, but we are on the same path of wanting a better tomorrow for us, our family and our tribe.”

The American Indian Association was also involved in standing in solidarity with Standing Rock. They have gathered supplies and some of them have traveled there or are currently traveling.

Letters to the editor Meh Day Whey (Comanche for Hello) My name is Lisa Brown, I am part of the Comanche Nation and I am currently serving as the president of the American Indian Association (AIA). On October 10, 2016, CNN reported (CNN Article) the state of Vermont and the cities of Denver and Phoenix joined the growing list of places celebrating Native Americans on the federal holiday named for Christopher Columbus.

Since Columbus Day 2015, at least 14 communities in the United States have passed measures, designating the second Monday in October Indigenous Peoples Day. It was brought to my attention some individuals do not agree and statements such as “I do not get a month or a day to celebrate my heritage” or “why put our heritage all in one month or all on one day”. We would respectively disagree.

As we prepare to celebrate Native November-slang (August 3, 1990, President Bush declared the month of November as Native American Indian Heritage Month), this month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. We have a lot of activities in the works and we are excited to collaborate with the Hispanic and BSA Clubs as we bring Diversity Week to Rose State College.

At the recent Great Debates: Power, Politics, and People - The Oklahoma Budget Crisis: Who, What, & Why, the state’s s financial struggle was brought into question. A series of overtly qualified panelists showed support for the need to better our education funding situation and how that might be accomplished.

From what I gather, it currently seems that our only hope rests on the passing of State Question #779 in the upcoming November election and, if passed, would go into effect July 1, 2017.

The initiative aims to create a limited purpose reserve to increase funding for public education by means of an increased state sales and use tax. The money collected would allot 69.5% to common school districts, 19.25% to institutions under the OK State Regents for Higher Education, 3.25% to the OK Department of Career and Technology Education and 8% to the State Department of Education. The measure would also increase teacher salary by a minimum of $5,000 over the salaries pain in the year previous to the passing of this proposition.

In addition, the article requires annual audits of those funded in regards to their use of the money. This document prohibits the use of funds for increasing the salaries of superintendents or the addition of superintendent positions. Moreover, this money would not replace other funding for education. If determined that funding was replaced, Legislature would not be permitted to make any appropriations until the amount of replaced funding were returned.

As with many suggestions, this too has its downfalls, but I ask you - what other choice do we have. We’re in dire straits and it cannot be put off any longer.
