RSC student headed to power-lifting world championship in Las Vegas

RSC student Jermaine Lyles recently competed in power-lifting competitions and succeeded in breaking records this year. Although he is new to the sport, Lyles displayed remarkable talent and determination.

How long have you been powerlifting?

What encourages you to keep lifting?

How many competitions have you participated in?

When is the world competition and what are your plans for the future?

J.L.: I began power-lifting in April this year. I had recently lost my job and the owner of the Pelican restaurant encouraged me to participate in bodybuilding and lifting competitions.

J.L.: My children motivate me to be my best. I am also motivated by those who did not believe in me. It pushes me to work harder.

My motto is, “Dream to rise and live to see the heights.”

J.L.: I have only competed in two so far. In July, I participated in Dallas and broke Oklahoma’s dead-lift record by dead-lifting 473 pounds.

J.L.: It will take place November in Vegas. I plan to compete and break all the records I can while doing so. I also want to represent the United States in the next Olympic games.

Important FAFSA changes students should know

by Kat Tabak Circulation Manager Financial aid made several important changes this October.

In the past, when it was time for students to apply for their financial aid, they would have to wait until the first of the year to submit the application for the upcoming fall semester and then for the next year’s spring semester. That is no longer a concern. As of Oct. 1, students can now submit their 2017-2018 financial aid applications.

“By having the FAFSA available earlier, students will be able to complete their federal aid applications in the same time-frame as their college admissions applications,” said Steven Daffer, head of the RSC Financial Aid office.

“With these new changes taking place, students and their families will have more time to resolve any income verification requirements or supplemental requests from financial aid offices,” Daffer said.

These changes also mean that students will be able to find out their financial aid eligibility sooner, which means they can make better decisions as far as which colleges or universities may work for them.

Another benefit of the change is that tax information will be easier to fill out since students will be using the tax returns from the previous year on their financial aid application.

This means students who are filing financial aid will not have to wait for tax returns to be filed or return in order for them to fill out this information on the application. This decreases the risk of complications occurring for students submitting their applications in a timely manner if the only thing holding them up is the tax return paperwork.

Club Sp tlight: Medical Lab Tech Club

Do you enjoy squinting into a microscope? Does the thought of searching for squiggly bacteria make you giddy? Are you interested in problem solving? If so, you might be interested in the field of Medical Laboratory Technology.

The Medical Laboratory Technology Club at Rose State College is a club that allows students to meet with others who share their interest.

Shawnda Hall, president of the club, said anyone can be involved in the club. According to Hall, the impact of the club on campus is “to try to get more students involved in the medical lab setting.” The mission of the MLT club is “to inform people of the impact of the lab on the medical setting,” Hall stated.

Medical laboratory technology is a rapidly expanding healthcare field.

A medical laboratory technician plays an increasingly important role in health care delivery. The MLT Club will provide an opportunity to create relationships with others in the field.

The club is involved in community service and will hold a coat drive and a food drive and a veterans display to talk about different vaccines and give free hot chocolate to veterans.

The club meets twice a month, every other Friday between 11 a.m. to noon in the Health Sciences building in the MLT Lab. Those who are in this field of study or have an interest in the field of Medical Laboratory Technology can join. Any questions about this club should be directed to Hall at shawnda-hall@raider.rose.edu or at 2058331.

The skinny on high-quality H2O

by Michelle Rojano Assistant Editor Most people have heard that we must drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. In reality, there is no way to set a general standard for everyone because the amount of water a person must drink depends on many variables. Despite that, drinking eight glasses a day can be a good start to drinking the appropriate amount of water daily, but how much does this cost?

A gallon of bottled water can cost anywhere from a $1.50 to $3. Although, according to Daniel Ratcliff, Rose State professor of environmental science, tap water is considered safer because it is regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, while bottled water is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, which has significantly fewer requirements and regulations than the EPA. Water is one of the most basic of necessities for all living creatures. Humans use water for almost everything, from drinking to maintaining hygiene, cleaning and, yes, defecating.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the average person uses 80 to 100 gallons a day. It is impossible to go a day without water and still be a healthy, hygienic being. This is why it is important to be informed of the processes involved with drinking and wastewater. Not only will people be able to know the chemicals that are entering their bodies and the quality of water being provided, but, hopefully, we will also be able to conserve and protect the resources we have.

According to the Oklahoma Comprehensive Water Plan, the water demand will increase dramatically by 2060. Finding ways to better treat and conserve water will ensure there is more than enough clean water available in the future without a dramatic increase in cost.

Currently, the money consumers are charged by the water company depends on how many gallons are used in a month and also includes fees for trash, wastewater and drinking water treatment. A full breakdown of the rates and fees can be found at okc.gov.

Everyone wants access to clean water. The process of getting healthy drinking water in our homes is extensive and expensive.

The responsibility of providing clean water into the homes of residents falls on the individual cities. Oklahoma’s municipalities divide the water resources. One of the biggest drinking water providers in the state of Oklahoma is Lake Thunderbird. Oklahoma City, Norman and Midwest City are a few of the cities extracting water from lake.

They have an agreement amongst each other regarding the amount of water they can use from the lake, and they also have backup water sources. The Garber-Wellington Aquifer is Midwest City’s backup water source. The source is used if there is a shortage in Lake Thunderbird or a drought.

The responsibility of providing clean water into the homes of res-

idents falls on the individual cities. Oklahoma’s municipalities divide the water resources. Many companies play a big part treating water and getting it into your sink.

Companies like Blue-White Industries sell filters used in the cleaning of water. They are the companies from which municipalities buy products from to clean water. There are various chemicals besides chlorine used in treating water like ammonium carbonate and many others.

Brenntag is a company that sells chemicals to clean the water. The company not only provides chemicals, they are also experts who know how to treat water in certain situations, whether it is to get rid of dirt or algae.

Belzonna is a company that specializes in materials that coat water tanks, pipes and filters. The main purpose of the material is to prevent contamination and erosion. Some of their materials can withstand highly toxic fluids and also materials that is safe for drinking water vs material specially for waste water. They make sure the appropriate coating is used, depending on the liquid being held within and the purpose of it.

Hach is a worldwide company specializing in providing materials to test water. They have expensive equipment that provides quick and effective methods that test water for not only pH, but also many dangerous chemicals popularly found in untreated water.

Oklahoma’s State Department of Environmental Quality employs scientists who are responsible for testing the water.

Their main focus is checking water for parasites and viruses that filters and water testers are unable to detect or clean.

Sage, on the other hand, is a company that focuses on testing water that has already been treated after being wastewater. The company uses organisms to make sure the water is being properly cleaned and has a safe pH and chemical percentages.

Treated wastewater is dumped into lakes and rivers, which could potentially pose a threat to wildlife that relies on these water sources for survival.

Keeping these percentages balanced helps animals that live in the lakes or rivers where wastewater from being negatively affected.

When the smaller organisms, like algae and fish are dying due to wastewater, the entire environment is at risk

by Austin Russell Staff Writer It was another great day for some soccer at Rose State when the men’s and women’s teams took on Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. Both teams put forth great effort and put on a show for the fans.

The women’s game was a close one all throughout the first and second half. There were plenty of shots on goal in the first half including one by #2 Stephanie Waitsccott, three shots on goal by #4, two shots from #17 Jordan Hendren and one more from #23 Vanessa McGee. The score at the end of the first half was 0-0. To start off the second half, the Lady Raiders continued to keep up the tempo and try to score to put their team in the lead. Two more shots on goal from #9 Shelby McGill with two shots, two from #7 Aspen Blood and one from #5 Reagan Robertson kept the Raiders in the game. The ladies fought hard and took the game into two overtimes, but the final score turned out to be a 0-0 tie.

The men’s game started off nice in the first half and continued to improve in the second. The Raiders started off with a bang with two shots on goal by #7 Quinton Carey, and an impressive goal from #23 Roberto Arroyo, with 8:58 left in the first half. The score at the end of the first half showed the Raiders on top being 1-0. The second half started off strong for the Raiders when they kept the momentum up and tried their very best to win the game. There were more shots on goal, two from #3 Vinicius Sanchez, one from #18 Chris Moore, two shots from striker #9 Aboubakr Diallo, and one very impressive header from #5 Dillion Loftis to increase the score 2-0, with 8:01 left in the game. The Raiders ended up on top with huge win over NEO for their last home game of the season.

Bedlam: The ultimate sibling rivalry by jonathan Goudeau Sports Editor Bedlam is quickly upon us.

On Dec. 3, the annual Bedlam game takes place in the confines of Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, where 84,000 fans will flock to what is always a great game. While the game is not for a little over a month, it is shaping up be a similar matchup like last year where the Big 12 Championship was on the line. For the Sooners, who won last year’s meeting 58-23 in Stillwater, and new on to win the Big 12, their path is simple but challenging: keep winning.

For the Cowboys, it is not as simple as they have already lost one conference game and will need to win out and receive some help to have a shot to win the Big 12. This Saturday’s match-up with West Virginia will tell if they are on the right track. While there might be similar stakes aside from bragging rights, there will also be noticeable differences this time in Norman. For the Sooners, they will have the services of star quarterback Baker Mayfield. The last time the Sooners played in Norman they were led by then back-up Cody Thomas, who has since quit football to focus on baseball, who started for the injured Trevor Knight who has also since departed.

A familiar face will be running back Samaje Perine, who carried the team on his 234-pound back until an ankle injury knocked him and the Sooners out of the game. Many recall the Sooners were forced to put in Alex Ross, who has since transferred to Missouri, as running back and all the momentum was lost. Unlike then the Sooner now have a nice 1-2 punch in Perine and sophomore sensation Joe Mixon.

We have already seen what Mixon can do in Perine’s absence so the Sooners should be in good hands if Perine gets injured. A lot has changed for the Cowboys as well. Coming into this game back in 2014 they were 5-6 and needed a win to get to a bowl game. They were also starting

a young quarterback by the name of Mason Rudolph who was coming off of an impressive game against Baylor the week before. However, a key player from that Cowboys team has departed.

Do-everything running back/ wide receiver/return man Tyreek Hill, who is now playing for the Kansas City Chiefs after finishing his career at second division North Alabama after getting kicked off the team for domestic violence. Hill, who turned down offers from the likes of Alabama among other top schools, etched his name into Bedlam history by returning a punt late in the fourth quarter for the game-tying touchdown.

While this Hill is gone, might another Hill take his spot? Justice Hill, perhaps? The freshman running back has already had three 100-yard games and is improving every week. While things are different there are similar questions to be asked.

If forced to punt late in the fourth quarter, will Sooner coach Bob Stoops instruct punter, Austin Seibert, to punt out-of-bounds or risk a repeat of 2014 by punting to dangerous Cowboys return man Jalen McClesky? If forced to punt like they did back in 2012, would the Cowboys punt to dangerous return man Mixon like they did when they punted to former Sooner wide receiver Justin Brown who returned it for a touchdown that sparked the comeback? Might another Penn State transfer receiver like Brown have a good game?

The Sooners have one in Geno Lewis. Will there be an overtime in Norman for the third year in a row? All those questions and more will be answered when the Sooners and Cowboys square off in the 2016 edition of Bedlam in front of 84,000 screaming fans in Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

One thing is for sure, Dec. 3, save the date - it looks to be a good one.

This past Saturday, the Oklahoma State Cowboys took on the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kansas, and came away with a hard fought 44-20 win. The game was a lot closer than the score indicates as the game was close up until late fourth quarter. The Jayhawks gave it their all but, in the end, two Montell Cozart interceptions did them in.

The Jayhawks rolled up 454 yards of offense led by Cozart who finished with 250 passing yards on 24-40 passing with one touchdown and two interceptions. Jayhawk running back Ke’aun Kinner finished his impressive day with 14 carries for 145 yards and the Jayhawks also received strong play from wide receiver’s LaQuivonte Gonzalez and Steven Sims Jr. who combined for 15 catches 196 yards and one touchdown.

The Jayhawk defense also sacked Cowboy quarterback Mason Rudolph five times. Rudolph overcame the sacks to finish his day 16-24 for 220 yards and one touchdown. Running back Justice Hill had a very impressive record-setting day as his 22 carry, 162 yards, one touchdown game made him the third true freshman running back in Cowboy history to have three 100-yard rushing games.

Another Cowboy record was broken as kicker Ben Grogan broke Dan Bailey’s career scoring record. Star wide receiver James Washington had a rough game, hauling in just one catch for nine yards as the Jayhawks double-teamed him all game. The Jayhawks came into the game leading the nation in turnovers and that trend continued today.

The Cowboys recorded two interceptions, the first by defensive tackle DeQuinton Osborne who returned it to the Kansas 1-yard line where running back Rennie Childs would punch it in for the score on the next play.

The second interception was a crazy one as safety Jordan Sterns picked off a tipped pass and returned it 21 yards only to, for some reason, lateral the ball to defensive tackle Vincent Taylor, who ran 14 yards before he lateraled the ball to defensive end Jarrell Owens, who then ran 29 yards before being tackled by Gonzalez at the Kansas 16yard line.

Sooner boom or bust?

The Oklahoma Sooners are on a roll, increasing their record to 4-2 after defeating Kansas State. The Sooners started off a little rough but have not given up and continue to keep their heads high. OU was thought to have a tough match up against Kansas State but the Sooners took care of business and got the job done.

Oklahoma came out ready to fight and make a statement on their home field. Quarterback Baker Mayfield played an outstanding game with 25-31 pass completions for 346 yards and threw four touchdown passes and only one interception for the game. Joe Mixon took over the run game with 19 carries for 88 yards due to starting running back Samaje Perine going out due to an injury, and will be out for the next two games. Dede Westbrook once again led the Sooners with nine catches for 184 yards and including three touchdowns to help the Sooners lead to another victory against Kansas State with the final score being 38-17.

OU goes on the road to Lubbock, Texas for their next game against Texas Tech and should be an intense battle. Everyone knows that Baker Mayfield came from Tech to join the Sooners and he is always excited to play against his former team. The Sooners will have to come ready to play in order to keep this win streak alive and continue to come out fired up and get the job done early instead of later.

Montreal’s pit bull ban goes south

by Cassandra Hernandez Photo Editor Many dog lovers vouch for their pets as their children or as some say “fur babies.” Recently, there has been a lot of talk about the new ban in Montreal, Québec, occurring after a 55-year-old woman was fatally attacked by a pit bull in her own backyard. The victim was Christiane Vadnais, and her family has been pushing the ban since the incident. They reported that banning “pit bulltype dogs” would prevent further issues likewise to this happening.

It might seem extreme to some but it is not anything new. Pit bulls have been banned before, and continue to be banned. The specific law name is Breed-Specific legislation (BSL) which is enforced in 30-plus states in the United States. Montreal’s neighboring province Ontario has had this ban in place since 2005.

Different states have their own specifications. BSL isn’t only a ban, it can be restrictions for breeds who are seen as “dangerous,” which means pit bulls are not the only breeds being targeted. In the case for Montreal, they state in their proposition that any “pit bull-type dog” would fall into the ban, which is quite vague. Those being informed of this for the first time are outraged.

An animal welfare site released information of the ban in Montreal. They mentioned that all pit bulls were to

be euthanized. In reality, people who already owned these dogs would have to pay a permit to own them, get them registered and micro-chipped by law.

If they were to go out on walks with the dogs, they would have to muzzle them and keep them on a very short leash. This ban also would prohibit people from further adopting a “pit bull-type dog,” meaning any left in shelters would be euthanized. Criminal background checks are also being required for pit/pit mix owners in Montreal.

The SPCA humane society took the city to court. Many animal activists spoke up about the issue and have caused many people on social media to create petitions and raise awareness. The Montreal Pit Bull Ban was suspended for an undetermined amount of time by Judge Louis Gouin the day it was to go into full effect.

The judge suspended it to give himself time to look over SPCA’s requests, which includes them cutting off all of their services for other dogs if the ban is approved. Due to the suspension, pit bulls and pit type-dogs can still be adopted and muzzles are not required in the meantime.

Oklahoma currently has no BSL set in place.

Happy Veterans’ Day! RSC Vets reflect on their time in the military

by Hana Ahmad-Coleman Staff Writer Lance Newbold, current Rose State College Director of Veteran Services and Academic Advisement, and former Rose State student, Brittany Graham, give insight into their time in the military.

When did you enlist into the military? What branch did you choose and why?

L.N.: “I joined in 1985. I picked the U.S Army for a couple of reasons. One, my uncle had served in the army. Two, my best friend was going into the army through Army ROTC at the University of Northern Iowa. Three, the army was all over the globe and there was all kinds of different places that I could go to.”

B.G.: “I chose to enlist after taking a leave of absence from university in May of 2011 … I chose to enlist in the U.S Air Force partly because of my military family, but mainly because I needed to get away.

Aviation always fascinated me so Air Force it was.”

Did you travel while in the service? If so, where?

What were your first days in service like?

What does it mean to you to be a military veteran?

L.N.: “My first overseas assignment was in Korea.

From Korea and a short amount of time in the states, I went to Germany the first [deployment] then I was in Kuwait for seven months. Then I went back to Fort Hood and from Fort Hood I went to England.

Then from England, back to Germany. And while we were in Germany, we went to Iraq and back to Germany then back to the States.”

L.N.: “I left Des Moines, Iowa, in the middle of the day and flew to Philadelphia and then got on a bus ... I don’t really know what time [I] actually arrived in Fort Dix, New Jersey, but it was dark, it seemed like the middle of the night, it was very disorienting. Um, and I remember the drill sergeant coming on board the bus and yelling for us to get off the bus. At that point you realize you’re a long way from home.”

L.N.: “Some of the things that stick out to me mostly about being a veteran is I know when I look back upon my time in uniform, I knew every day I put on that uniform that I was making a difference. That I was doing something important. Being a veteran means you served alongside some of the greatest men and women this country produces … There’s a bond that goes with having gone through similar experiences.”

B.G.: “I did get to travel quite a bit. First to Texas and Washington state for training, then being stationed in Oklahoma. I’ve also had temporary duty assignments in Georgia, Arizona, California, Canada, and I “deployed” to Curaçao.”

Clowns have taken over the media over the past four months, with reports of dangerous, weapon-bearing individuals dressed in clown costumes surfacing all over the nation. Clown portrayed by Jackson Parker, theatre major.

Early Hallow’s Eve: Clowns overtaking the media

These clowns were reportedly trying to coax local kids into the woods with offers of candy and money. Fortunately, the children who saw these clowns declined the offer and told their parents who then informed the police. When the police went to investigate, the clowns were nowhere to be found.

Sadly, this is not the first set of clown sightings in modern history.

In 1981, Boston locals started seeing clowns with weapons trying to lure children into black, windowless vans. A cryptozoologist coined the phrase “phantom clowns.”

Soon after Boston, the so-called phantom started showing up all over the U.S., and over time, reports died down.

Unlike the phantom clowns of Boston, who were only seen by children, today’s clowns have been spotted by people of all ages, ranging from middle school students all the way up to senior citizens. This new clown problem has steadily grown and spread out over time as assumed copycats have taken up the job of scaring other neighborhoods. It appears that this stunt has jumped the pond and is now plaguing parts of the United Kingdom as well.

Things turned violent

in Columbus, Ohio, when claims of a clown chasing children with a knife surfaced. A boy was walking to his bus stop one school morning when he turned a corner and saw a clown with a knife in the street.

The clown chased the boy down the street. When police arrived the clown was gone and there were no witnesses to corroborate the boy’s story. Therefore, many people think that this phantom clown case and others are hoaxes or inappropriate joke at best.

Unfortunately, another “joke” went too far. Christian Torres, age 16, a student at Reading High School in Pennsylvania, was brutally stabbed to death by a man in a clown mask in late September.

Even with this foreboding and tragic turn of events, it would be wise to remember that a majority of these sightings have been distasteful practical jokes. But for those who are still scared, there is some good news.

There’s been at least two accounts of men dressing up like bats and stealing the spotlight from the clowns. That’s right, real-life Batmen are taking up the caped crusader’s mantle to fight off this new clown threat.

So to every child (or adult) who has been scared by these Joker wanna-bes, you can sleep soundly tonight knowing that Batman is on the case.

Cooler weather means three things: layering, hot chocolate and the desire to stay in bed all day long. This winter season, trapeze dresses, blanket scarves and boots are the biggest trends so far. Unfortunately, Oklahoma’s temperatures are not dropping significantly enough for layers and long sleeves. Puffer vests over a short sleeve will keep you cool enough until fall temperatures find you.

Spending time with family and friends on Thanksgiving offers the opportunity to merge the holiday and colder trends together. Light blues, gray, mustard and emerald green are among the list of colors trending this fall.

According to Pantone, the color palette is a unity of strength, confidence and complexity, with the blues leading the way. Earth tones are continuing to steal the show, with deep pinks and warm taupes continuing through this season.

OU student congress gives OK to gay group Emotions ranging from anger and disbelief to pure joy flashed across the University of Oklahoma campus last week after the student congress granted recognition to the Gay People’s Union in a 26-14 vote.

Those emotions are not likely to quickly subside on the controversy.

OU’s new president, Dr. William S. Banowsky, told the congress on Sept. 27 that he was against recognition of gays.

“This is not an emotional issue with me, it isn’t a moral issue either. I just don’t think it is good for the university,” Banowsky reportedly told the congress.

Apparently the congress, after lengthy consideration, saw a difference between the GPU and the Gay Activist Alliance. The GAA has fought for recognition for the past three years.

They have been repeatedly turned down by the congress and lost a student referendum and state court battle.

GPU’s president, Lynn-Philip Book, told the congress that GU is devoted to the cultural exchange between gays and “straights,” whereas GAA wants the attainment of civil rights.

In spite of the differences of the two groups, Congress Chairman Chuck Springer told reporters that every member of the GPU is also a member of the GAA. Book appeared before the student congress and made a lengthy plea for GPU’s recognition.

He presented a petition and a group of letters written by faculty and staff members urging congress to grant recognition to the gays.

Book reportedly told the congress that Banowsky’s opposition is a moral one but there is a clear separation of church and state and noted that OU is a state supported institution.

GPU faculty sponsor, Dorothy Foster, told the congress that denial of recognition of gays reminded her of the McCarthy era.

“I am disappointed that the regents will not

allow for an atmosphere of free debate on this campus,” she said.

Anger and disbelief at the congress’ action was expected from many campus’ factions and it wasn’t long in coming.

The student newspaper, The Oklahoma Daily, blasted the action in a rare front page editorial.

Editor J. Andy Rieger charged the 26 who voted for recognition had “turned out the lights and pulled the plug on a university striving for increased funding, academic excellence and to reign a state reputation as a leader in educational pursuits.”

Rieger continued, “Legally, Congress was correct in voting for such a group. But like marijuana and murder, homosexuality is still against the law. However, from a moral standpoint the congressmen were wrong - dead wrong.”
