This grant is the largest of its kind that the cyber security program has received from the National Security Agency in the program’s history.

Cyber security program receives large grant gram has increased to 220 declared majors in cyber and/or digital forensics. An increase of 13.4 percent from Fall 2015.

“Rose State is working for additional grant funding to expand the program opportunity next year from three students to possibly seven,” Dewey said.

“I have always had a fascination for all things electronic. Cyber Security was a natural way for me to pursue this fascination and turn it into a career,” Magar said.

Magar also discussed how he has received opportunities at RSC that he would not have gotten at other institutions. He said RSC’s Cyber Security program has provided an excellent foundation on which he can continue his education and taught him to think outside the box.

“I have not only received a quality education, but I have grown as a person.”

by Rya underwood Online Editor Rose State College received a $117,000 grant to support the education and training of three students pursuing a degree in cyber security.

The three scholarship recipients include David Magar, Colton Sutton and Kasey Mills.

Funded by the National Security Agency, the grant will be supervised by Rose State’s Cyber Security Program Director Ken Dewey.

“The grant is the first of its kind and serves as a great stepping stone for future grants,” Dewey said.

The opportunity provides students with funding for tuition, fees, books and includes a stipend of $22,500 for each student, and supplies for the college. Once educational requirements are completed for Rose State, students will transfer to the University of Tulsa where they will receive their bachelor’s degree in computer science or information technology. Upon graduation, students will serve with a federal agency for three years.

According to Dewey, there has been a rapid growth in the program this fall and said this could be due to the quality of instruction, demand in the field and availability of classes. Student enrollment for the Rose State pro-

Dental Hygiene program offers $5 children’s dental cleanings

The Dental Hygiene clinic at RSC is currently searching for young patients for their children’s clinic.

Children between the ages of 3-12 can be scheduled by parents or guardians from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 10 or 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 14 for a dental assessment at the children’s clinic at RSC. “For the small $5 fee, each child will be provided an oral health assessment, teeth cleaning, topical fluoride treatment and preventive patient education,” Robin Graham, director of the dental hygiene program, said.

Graham is responsible for the push to get children patients for the

kids’ clinic in order to give students more hands-on learning.

“These services can be offered at a reduced fee because dental hygiene students provide the services in a learning environment,” Graham said.

Licensed dentists and dental hygienists provide supervision during all clinical procedures to ensure that all procedures go well.

The dental hygiene clinic is located in the Allied Dental Education Building near the Health and Environmental Science building on Boeing Drive.

College sleepiness: Risks of all-nighters

by Rya Underwood Online Editor Have you been feeling sleepy lately? Maybe finding it hard to concentrate on your school work or even stay awake during class?

Between midterms, finals and daily classwork, college can sometimes become overwhelming. College students are known to run on little-tono sleep nearly all the time. It is also common for students to pick up a coffee instead of lying down and catching up on some much-needed ZZZ’s. But what is this lack of sleep really doing?

The average young adult, ages 18 to 25, needs seven to nine hours of sleep per night. However, college students require more sleep than the average young adult. Stanford University Professor William Dement, M.D., Ph.D, reported college students need at least eight hours of sleep nightly.

College students might need more sleep than the average young adult, but they are actually getting less sleep. According to the University Health Center, “On average, most college students get 6 to 6.9 hours of sleep per night, and the college years are notoriously sleep-deprived due to an overload of activities.”

These statistics are proven accurate at RSC’s campus.

“I’m usually awake for 20 hours each day, and with all sorts of things I’m involved in, I sometimes just do not make time for sleep,” RSC student Elias Martinez said.

These statistics probably do not come off as a huge surprise to most, but the impact sleep deprivation has on daily routine may be a bit more

surprising.

“I wouldn’t go to school some days, and I was snappy with people and irritable,” Dereka Clark, Langston University student, responded when asked how a lack of sleep affected her daily activities.

Sleep loss can result in weaker immune systems, causing illness, weight gain and obesity, increased levels of stress, mental health issues, decreased GPA and many other problems.

“When I’m sleep deprived I tend to be kind of jittery and on-edge, and I have a really hard time focusing on one thing for more than a few seconds,” Ben Holland, an OU student, said. “It just adds a whole new layer of stress on top of the already stressful experience of trying to pass classes and work and all that.”

Scientists have proved that depending on a sleep-deprived brain can be dangerous, according to the BBC. The brain acts erratically when it has not had enough sleep. The brain will act with normal functionality for a duration of time while sleep deprived, but it will periodically have moments of slow responses.

During which, the brain decreases in attention and visual processing.

“The researchers found that a sleep-deprived brain can normally process simple visuals, like flashing checkerboards. However, the ‘higher visual areas’ -those responsible for making sense of what we see - didn’t function well,” BBC reported.

Imagine a student driving a car after taking their last final, unable to concentrate or visually process surroundings properly.

Quality sleep is essential to help avoid such risks.

Sleep deprivation is much more serious than what meets the eye.

At first thought, it may not sound like a very risky problem, but the questions start to rise and the danger behind sleep deprivation unfolds.

Imagine a doctor about to perform a serious surgery. One mistake and the patient’s condition could worsen or their life could be at stake.

Imagine a student driving a car after taking their last final, unable to concentrate or visually process surroundings properly. Quality sleep is essential to help avoid such risks. Sleep deprivation is much more serious than what meets the eye.

There are many obvious signs of sleep deprivation. Some of these include concentration loss, clumsiness or simply being incapable of staying awake. But it is also important to recognize signs of sleep deprivation that are not so obvious.

Acting out of impulse is often a sign of sleep loss. The prefrontal cortex of the brain associated with judgment and impulse control and can be affected by lack of sleep.

“An arm and a leg” or “Between a rock and a hard place.” Sleep loss affects the frontal lobe, which is associated with speech and creativity. Making complex speaking more difficult, people often fall on catch phrases when sleep deprived.

Sleep deprivation munchies. Eating more is also a common sign of sleep deprivation that is often overlooked. The leptin and ghrelin hormones are shifted when a person doesn’t get enough sleep. Leptin tells

the body when it should stop eating, and ghrelin tells the body when to eat. When suffering from a lack of sleep, ghrelin increases and leptin decreases, convincing the body to eat more.

Drowsiness. One of the most common signs of sleep deprivation is drowsiness. While it is an obvious sign, it is often misunderstood. Many people think drowsiness is one of the first signs of sleep deprivation. In actuality, drowsiness is the final sign before crashing.

So if sleep deprivation creates so many issues, why do college students continue to lack sleep?

“For some people, like me, the future that I’ve planned rides entirely on obtaining a degree. I can’t get that degree if I put off classes or assignments because I’m mentally or physically drained from exhaustion,” said Kayla Lee, a RSC student.

Though students might be staying up all hours of the night to finish homework and study for exams, it could hinder their grades more than helping them.

Starting a healthy sleep schedule can improve a lot of issues associated with sleep deprivation.

“Only party on weekends and be in bed by [midnight] at the latest,” Clark said.

Managing a sleep schedule may be difficult at first, but it will help with daily performances, which pays off in the long run.

by Kat Tabak Circulation Manager There are two new faces joining the RSC campus as part of the Special Services staff.

Davidson Monroe is Rose State College’s new part-time internship counselor. He is a temporary staff member with the Special Services team, which is located in the Student Service Building.

“Counseling is not just for ‘crazy’ people,” Monroe said.

As a counselor who became involved in order to give back to the community, Davidson works hard to connect with students on the RSC campus who need counseling services and gives them his time and support.

“Stress is never fun, but if we can make it funny then it might not seem so bad,” he said.

He started his internship this semester and is going to be staying through May of next year.

He is located on the second floor of the Student Service Building, Room 111, and the phone number to schedule appointments is 7337373.

Carly, a fully-trained therapy dog, is the second new face that is

joining the RSC as a member of the Special Services staff. At a little over a year and a half old, she is the extra gentle, fluffy, emotional support that students might find themselves needing when they go for counseling.

A therapy dog is different from a service animal in that both the therapy dog and their owner go through the same training. They work as a team, while a service animal is trained to be an ‘extension’ of their owner as it were, a therapy dog is trained to work together as a team with its owner.

As Joanne Stafford’s personal assistant, she is usually always with her in her office.

“When she is on campus working as a therapy dog, she understands that she is here to serve them, not me. Her job is to serve as a stress-reducer for students and staff. People are invited to pet or sit with her,” Stafford said.

RSC students dominate stage in ‘Bye Bye Birdie’

by Kelsey Morgan Editor-in-Chief RSC’s theatre, music and music theatre departments will collaborate in a production of the well-known musical “Bye Bye Birdie,” which hits the stage Oct. 21-23 at the Hudiburg Chevrolet Performing Arts Center.

“Bye Bye Birdie” is about rockstar Conrad Birdie visiting small-town Sweet Apple, Ohio, after being selected in the draft. There, Birdie will guest star on a popular TV show for his farewell performance. Inspired by Elvis Presley being drafted into the army in 1957, “Bye Bye Birdie” is filled with music that will take attendees back to the heart of rock ‘n’ roll.

“It’s a classic show that’s hilarious but talks about social issues of the time without getting too heavy,” RSC student Mckenna Leewright said.

Leewright is a music theatre major playing Kim McAfee, a 15-yearold girl who was chosen to kiss Birdie after his farewell performance, despite the obvious jealousy from her boyfriend.

“I remember being 15 and thinking I was all grown up and ready for the world, and I wasn’t,” Leewright said. “I relate with her energy and attitude throughout the show.”

Leewright is one of several RSC students cast in this production.

This show is relying heavily on RSC faculty behind the scenes as well as the students on the stage. Professor of Theatre Rick Nelson is the producer and Dr. Tracey Gregg-Boothby, music professor, is the musical director and conductor for the orchestra. Technical Director Martin Steger is assisting with the building of the set.

“We have several students participating in stagecraft class and theatre production [students] helping to build the set,” Nelson said.

“We are also using high-definition projection in this show, and we are designing projections to use as backdrops for some of the scenes in the show.”

Amy Nevius, theatre dance instructor, is choreographing the show.

Guest Director Jenny Rottmayer, who played Ado Annie in RSC’s production of “Oklahoma!” last fall and Jo March in “Little Women” during the spring semester, is responsible for staging the production.

“I’m so excited to get to showcase the training I’ve received from [my professors]. Representing them, our program and the school means the world to me,” Leewright said.

General admission tickets are $25 and $19 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased at the Civic Center Music Hall box office by calling 297-2264.

Oklahoma football: Season outlook

The Oklahoma State Cowboys have finished their non-conference slate with a 2-1 record with impressive wins over Southeast Louisiana and Pittsburgh. The team’s lone-loss came to Central Michigan on a heartbreaking Hail Mary pass and later al touchdown that critics say should not have counted.

The Cowboys offense has looked strong so far this season, with the combination of quarterback Mason Rudolph to wide receiver James Washington which looks as strong as ever, especially last week when the duo hooked up for 296 yards and two scores.

The run game, a problem last year, has been solid so far for the Cowboys as they take on a running back by committee approach.

Senior running back Chris Carson has been the Cowboys leading rusher in two of the first three games, showing the power and ability talked about when he came out of junior college last year. Rennie Childs led against Pittsburgh, as Carson missed with a hand injury and finished with a strong 101-yard, two score day.

True freshman running back Justice Hill has also looked good. The defense was not as impressive, surrendering long drives to both Central Michigan and Pittsburgh with the run defense being a huge problem against Pitt, giving 290 yards.

The Cowboys will need to keep up the strong offensive play and improve on the defensive side against Baylor in Waco, Texas, if they want to compete for a Big 12 Championship.

The Sooners started the season with high hopes and a world of momentum coming off a shockingly strong season last year that saw them win the Big 12 and make the college football playoffs.

Unfortunately, this season has been the worst case scenario for the Sooners as they have gone 1-2 with losses against ranked teams Houston and Ohio State, with their lone win being against lowly Louisiana Monroe.

The defense has been a huge problem, especially in the secondary where they rank 113th in the country in pass defense. They have not been able to find a suitable replacement for all-Big 12 cor nerback and NFL draft pick, Zach Sanchez, as they have used about four to five different corners in just three games alone.

The defensive line has not been much help as they lack a pass rush on the outside and are dealing with injuries and suspensions that have left the defensive tackles with virtually little to no depth, which has not helped the situation. The offense has not been much better either.

The offensive line has struggled to consistently block in both the run and pass game and the injury to starting guard Cody Ford this past Saturday has not helped. The passing game is lacking a true No. 1 go-to receiver, a void left by the Sooners second all-time leading receiver Sterling Shepard. Sophomore Mark Andrews, who was a red zone specialist last year, has done his best to step up as he had huge games against both Houston

The run game, when provided blocking has not been bad, with sophomore running back, Joe Mixon, leading the way, showing the ability to both catch and run. Sooner hero quarterback Baker Mayfield has had his struggles this year as well, but the lack of blocking and consistent receiver play has not helped him either, leading him to force things in or der to make a play.

The Sooners have a much-needed bye week this week before going on the road next Saturday to take on TCU in the Big 12 opener where they will look to get back on track.

The OKC Dodgers hosted the first two play-off games at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The Dodgers played the Nashville Sounds, losing 7-2 Oct. 7 and winning 5-2 Oct. 8. The Dodgers’ season came to an end after losing to the El Paso Chihuahuas 3-4 Sept. 17.

without having to pay for their own space. Innovation Station will offer memberships to people to come in and use the facilities for a much cheaper price.

Innovation Station offers more than just a co-working environment, it offers a variety of training programs. The programs that Innovation Station creates will have open enrollment to the public. However, if someone has something he or she wants to learn about specifically, Innovation Station will set up a registration for it, and if there are enough enrollees they will have a class for it.

Lego Serious Play is one of the many workshops offered, giving Innovation Station a unique touch. During the serious play, a series of questions are asked. The person then has to create a response in Legos and explain each part of what he or she built.

“It’s getting people to tap into their creativity and think about things in a different way and maybe solve business problems and communicate in different ways that they maybe wouldn’t have done otherwise,” Engelbrecht said.

Innovation Station utilizes the Meetup application as well as their website at www.innovationstationokc.com for meetings and training programs.

RSC@OKC Innovation Station officially opened its doors Thursday, Sept. 22.

Located in central downtown Oklahoma City, Innovation Station offers a variety of opportunities and resources.

The open floor plan is designed to operate as a co-working environment, allowing people to use the space for personal work in a public atmosphere.

A glass wall separates the main workspace from an additional room.

This area provides a classroom setting designated for conferences and training courses. In addition, Innovation Station has a secluded office for anyone who needs space for a private meeting or just feels more comfortable working in a remote environment.

“We don’t supply a lot of technologies because most people have their own to use. We do have a MacBook and an iMac desktop computer,” Innovation Station Director Dr. Misty Engelbrecht said.

Although Innovation Station only has two of its own computers, Tinker Federal Credit Union loaned three computers to the business for people who do not have their own. In addition, TFCU has played a major financial part of making Innovation Station come to life.

Club Sp tlight

The Breakfast Club: RSC Style

by Marshall Niles Staff Writer Come on down, bring your grub, and join The Breakfast Club. (No, not the movie, though it was an ‘80s pop culture classic.) This Breakfast Club is located in the Clubhouse of The Village at RSC and is open to the public.

“We get together on some mornings and just eat breakfast. It’s really more of a social thing to just kind of hangout. We really just want to just get more students engaged and involved,” Greyson Wolf, president of the Breakfast Club, said.

“So we’re just trying to get people out there, start their morning off right and have fun.”

The club is currently using food donations from members to supply the food for meetings, but Wolf said the club may begin organizing fundraisers.

“Right now we’re kind of just running off of people bringing stuff. If you show up, maybe bring something to share,” Wolf said.

So grab some donuts, maybe some fruit or juice and head over to the Clubhouse from 8-9:30 a.m. every other Tuesday. The next club breakfast will

The 2016 Heritage Day took place Sept. 10 at the Atkinson Community Center. Heritage Day is modeled after a time where families would gather at the home of Midwest City founder W. P. “Bill” and Rubye Atkinson for a day to ride Shetland ponies.

This family-friendly event offered attendees face-painting, pony rides, a petting zoo, musical entertainment, arts and crafts and an historic home tour of the Atkinson Center.
