Students look to develop PoliSci Club in fall

Rose State Student Senate has four newly-elected officers. As they prepare for the transition from one school year to another, a second group is working with professors to initiate a club with the hopes of collaborating and raising campus involvement among students.

Sonja Sparks and Deanna Williams, both political science majors, are working with other students and faculty to launch a Political Science club. Faculty sponsors for the club are expected to be Joseph Campbell and James Davenport, according to Williams.

PoliSci Club, officially slated for launch in fall 2017, plans to introduce students to the processes involved in politics, encourage political activism, spur campus contributions by students, connect political science majors with events and networking opportunities and even hold voter registration drives.

Sparks said the club would tentatively meet the first Wednesday and third Tuesday of each month “so that students with conflicting schedules could still be involved.” Williams added that a big hindrance for many people hoping to join clubs is the inability to commit because of scheduling issues.

Another desire for the group is to hold voter education seminars to inform voters of their rights in the voting booth, the limitations on voter identification and prohibitions on campaigning at the polls. Williams and Sparks think many people are under informed or misinformed about the voting process.

According to Williams, the club hopes to “step in with Student Senate and give information about what they’re doing and their bills” to students on campus who are unable to access it easily. They also want to increase

understanding about the role of Student Senate on campus and to be actively involved in the election process by hosting town halls and debates for the candidates.

Sparks and Williams shared concerns regarding awareness of Student Senate, citing a general lack of knowledge about the details of the organization. They hope to help provide clarity, accountability and transparency.

“There’s really too many gray areas for something that is designed to be the bridge between the students and the faculty,” Williams stated.

The collaboration between PoliSci Club and Student Senate would be mutually beneficial, as both clubs seek out student involvement in campus matters as part of their core purpose.

Adrianna Rogers, nursing major and newly elected Student Senate secretary, thinks that student participation and input is essential to the productivity of Student Senate.

“Personally, I would love to see Student Senate get more feedback from students on what they want to see on campus. Though [senate members] are allowed to present our own legislation, it is better to create legislation that appeals to more people on campus,” Rogers said.

Rogers and her fellow executive board members – President Kailey Kelpine, Vice-President Olyvia Nguyen and Treasurer Kaitlyn Burden – have a campus population of almost 10,000 students and more than 25 clubs and organizations to consider in the decisions they make.

From sending legislation to the college president for approval to fulfilling club funding requests, Rogers said if students utilize their voices Student Senate will work to make Rose State the best it can be as a campus.

“We are here to help and we are not a group that excludes people. We believe the more ideas and perspectives the better,” she added.

Intersectional Feminism

by Hana’ Ahmad-Coleman Staff Writer Feminism, women fighting for women’s rights. That is what many people think whenever they hear the word feminism. When it comes to topics like this, people begin to develop their own thoughts on what the definition should be.

Tara Hall, professor of sociology at Rose State, said her personal definition of feminism is equality for all genders. “A woman should have a choice of what she wants to do, so should a man,” she said. “The social stigma that is often there, if people blur the gender lines shouldn’t be.”

It is difficult to find a clear answer on what the definition of feminism is because it may have different meanings to different people. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, feminism is “the theory of political, economic, and social quality of the sexes.”

Intersectionality may be an unfamiliar term to many people. The term was coined in 1989 by legal scholar, Kimberlé Crenshaw. Intersectionality is “the theory that the overlap of various social identities, such as race, gender, sexuality and class, contributes to the specific type of systemic oppression and discrimination experienced by an individual.”

Not everyone is included in regard to social issues. Even though feminism is fighting for the equality of the sexes, people who are in minority groups can be marginalized. That is where inter sectionality comes in. Intersectionality includes everyone regardless of their background.

Differences and Similarities of Feminism Between the Generations Feminism has evolved over the years. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, there are three noted waves of feminism. The first wave, which began in the late 19th century, focused on issues like women’s suffrage and voting rights. The second wave, 1950s and 1960s, questioned issues like domestic violence and workplace inequality. The third wave, from the 1980s to the 1990s, focused on sexuality and gender. Throughout the generations, society’s views and even how women fight for equality, have changed. In an interview with Joy Ahmad, self proclaimed feminist and Del City High School counselor, she reminisced on feminism from her generation.

“In my generation of the ‘50s and ‘60s, women in general were fighting to be recognized as equal human beings rather than “property” of their husbands and/or fathers. New gener -

ations are aware that they have legal rights that did not exist in the earlier decades. So, protection of the law is definitely a hard-earned achievement,” she said.

Some of the same issues that women fought for in the 1960s are still being fought today. Although, there have been people who argue about the wage gap between genders, women still get paid less than men. A news release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that in the first quarter of 2017, the median weekly earning of full-time workers was $865. Women had 80.5 percent the weekly earning of men.

While women get paid less than men, there is another issue that remains unequal between genders. It’s the issue of unequal pay between white women and minority women. In that same news release, minority women made 145 dollars a week less than white women.

The differences between wage gaps do not reflect education, workforce experience, chosen industry or standardized test scores.

This raises the question of whether women who are out protesting the wage gap between genders are protesting the wage gap between white women and women of color. This is where the issue of white feminism comes in.

White Feminism White feminism is a term developed to describe feminism, that can excludes minorities, including women of color and its LGBTQ community.

Women who are part of white feminism, fight for the issues that tend to only benefit them.

Shawntal Brown, a women and gender studies and psychology major at the University of Oklahoma, said “Feminism for white women has always focused on the gender, political and economic equality and did not include racial equality within their agenda. Within women of color feminism, there has been a push for racial equality, economic equality and social equality.”

Minority feminism tends to be more inclusive than white feminism. With minority feminism, people from all walks of life are represented. For women in the LGBTQ community, white feminism does not benefit all women in that community.

“I think it gets pretty complex because people in the LGBTQ community are discriminated against on a daily basis … people in minority groups need feminism more than anything,” said Kailyn Harris, former Rose State Spectrum President. An example of white feminism in the women’s pride community is when Caitlyn Jenner received the Woman of the Year Award from Glamour. Many people were up-

set at the idea of Jenner receiving the award. Transgender people are a highly marginalized group in society.

Critics felt there were more deserving people, such as Laverne Cox who has done much for the trans community.

Minority women who are in the LGBTQ community tend to have a different experience than those who are white in the community. Sometimes women of color can feel underrepresented and overshadowed by the voices of their white counterparts. Another example of this is the Women’s March. The march was aimed to highlight the issues of human rights, healthcare and racial equality to name a few. While there were many people who fought and rallied at the march, there were women who were seen at the march just to take selfies and be a part of the cause.

“The Women’s March, from the black feminist perspective, was primarily white women gaining their social trophy and failing to understand the reality of women of color post-election because, as we know, over 52 percent of white women voted for Trump,” Brown said. “This was a great event, these same allies are not at Black Lives Matter marches, protesting against the immigration policies and any other social justice matter. This march is only a beginning for feminists and allies but there is always more that needs to be done to ensure true equality.”

Intersectionality Intersectionality is needed in any social issue. With feminism, the key is for all people, not just women, to be included. Feminism is more that just fighting for women’s rights, it is the fight for equality of all people. Men are equally important to the feminist movement. It is not a secret that men hold more political power. If women want to get their voices heard for the cause, men need to be on board as well. Sure, women can fight for their rights without men being a part of the fight, but strength comes in numbers.

“Men play a vital role in feminism,” Hall said, “there are benefits for women having rights.” “Unfortunately, where we are in society, women still have less power, less representation, and less control. To be quite honest we need men to get on board to make real progress.”

That is not the only reason inter sectionality is important. It makes feminists, and anyone involved with a social issue see people from a differ ent perspective. People have different life experiences. No two people are the same. “Feminists must look through the multi-dimensional eyes of other feminists in order to gain empathy and motivation to collaborate,” Ahmad said.

OK Sexual Education

In just the past few years, the United States experienced a syphilis epidemic, with Oklahoma reporting more than 70 cases in 2017. The county outbreak had many people questioning STDs - how they arise, how to get rid of them and how to look out for symptoms. It’s easy to avoid conversations about STDs and teen pregnancy, but it’s not so easy to avoid when you are face-to-face with a diagnosis or pregnancy.

The best way to prevent a diagnosis is education. Many people turn to the Internet as the fundamental resource for information on sex, but useful information and reliable sources can be hard to find. The Internet can be a useful resource but can also be the stem of misconceptions. Daily, people share falsified information and are victim to inaccurate websites. One of the most reliable ways to receive information regarding sexual education is through a sex-ed program or course in school.

The problem with this is that Oklahoma is lacking in sexual education, along with the prevention of teen pregnancy. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy stated that Oklahoma’s teen pregnancy rates are the second highest in the country. “When I was younger, I figured out the basics from biology books,” Rose State alumna Becca Stokes said. According to Stokes, her only sexual education was an STD talk in middle school.

She described her experience in high school in regards to sexual education to be “lacking.”

Noe Enriquez, biomedical engineering major at UCO, described his sexual education in grade school.

“In elementary school, they showed us a video and a diagram of a male and female anatomy. They also told us what would happen in puberty for males and females,” Enriquez said.

He continued to say he does not remember sex education in middle school or high school.

He does, however, remember that by the time his parents talked to him about the subject, he thought he had already learned everything about it from his friends. Later he realized he did not learn everything.

“I wasn’t ever taught how to put a condom on. Or what STDs are more common and what they feel like,” he said.

Many times schools are the only place people learn about sex. Parents might not feel comfortable speaking about the subject with their children, but not all kids have sex education in school. Those who do might remember the experience as being uncomfortable.

Despite the rates on sexual education in Oklahoma, the way it is taught has remained the same for years.

Teachers leading the lectures on the subject aren’t trained to teach sex education. The awkwardness and immaturity is mirrored by the students.

“My teachers could barely say the words ‘penis’ or ‘vagina’,” Stokes said.

Not properly teaching young people about sex results in early pregnancy. This doesn’t only affect the teens involved; it affects the lives of the children they bear. According to sociology professor Tara Kay Hall, “Low-income families

tend to have higher birth rates. There are many reasons for this, such as lack of education, lack of access to affordable birth control, lack of legitimate economic opportunities, etc.”

According to Teenshelter.org it is five times more likely for teens who already have a baby to have a second one. This means they have more children and less disposable income.

Growing up in poverty does not just mean lack of name brands and expensive gifts. It this also means they’re more likely to be arrested.

“We do see higher rates of crime in areas of high poverty. Some research suggests that those of lower social class might be more prone to commit street crime because of social circumstances,” Hall said.

Since it is considered a delicate subject, some schools send out permission slips for parents to consent to the lecture on sex. For the lecture, some schools choose to divide the males and females. “It’s really a maturity thing why they should be divided,” Enriquez said.

Oklahoma’s rates for teen pregnancy are high

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services showed that in Oklahoma births of 15 to 19-year-olds in comparison to the national range was 14.3 births higher per 1,000 teens. Massachusetts on the other hand, was 13.6 births per 1,000 teens lower than the national average.

According to advocatesforyouth.org, Massachusetts teaches abstinence only. But News 22 from Massachusetts stated there is a bill in the works. The bill will not require sex education to be taught, but those who do teach it will be “required to offer information on both contraceptives and abstinence, and to present age-appropriate, medically accurate information.”

Unfortunately, practicing abstinence is easier said than done. Despite coming from a religious household, Enriquez did not practice abstinence. Merriam Webster defines abstinence as “the fact or practice of restraining oneself from indulging in something.” To teens, however, the meaning of being abstinent from sex is up for interpretation. Many think they are abstinent while still engaging in behavior that has a risk of STDs. Only 3 percent of people remain abstinent until marriage, according to Abstinence Statistics.

Besides the approach chosen in teaching sex, schools forget to be inclusive of all students, including LGBT students. One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to the LGBT community is that they are consciously making a choice. Professor of Psychology Richard Wedemeyer said although it is tough to research the matter because of the vague meaning of the word ‘orientation’, “The body of current research informs us that sexual orientation is largely a product of genetics that direct the early prenatal hormonal environment. External

environmental factors play a role, but likely do not usually dominate. One thing is clear: one does not choose who one is attracted to.”

Sex education is lacking in many aspects.

It is also exclusive to heterosexual students.

According to PBS 3.5 percent of Americans identify as LGBT. This means in a school of 100 students, there are at least three students who will not benefit from the lecture, if there is one at all.

Having access to a class that not only talks comprehensively about sex but also teaches about the many attached subjects, like orientation and gender, may help many teens in preventing not only STDs and teen pregnancy but also suicide.

According to Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, studies have shown gay, lesbian and bisexual youth are more likely to attempt suicide than heterosexual ones. A study with 55 transgender students showed more than 13 had suicide attempts.

Not only is it important to properly teach about sex, it is also important to make certain tools accessible to those who are engaging in the act. NBC news says teens have sex for the first time at about 17 years old. No matter how often teens are told to wait, it is impossible to stop teens from engaging in sex.

Different people have different ideas on what is the best way to fix the issue. It is tough to agree on the topic. The truth is the solution might not be the same for everyone. An important area to focus on is to debunk the myths and to adjust to every student, with the mentality that we are all different people.

“Sex education is usually not comprehensive in the U.S., and so mythologies abound. In addition, free birth control is not omnipresent.

Where comprehensive sex education exists in this country and elsewhere, it yields lower unwanted pregnancy rates, lower STI rates, and a later age at which sex is begun,” Wedemeyer said.

Girls who are sexually active may choose not to get birth control because it may feel inaccessible to them or they may possibly be shamed.

Although it is not impossible to get birth control, it is definitely not an easy task to do alone.

Many girls may find it difficult to find the right person (someone who will not judge or discourage them) to ask for help. When teen girls begin taking birth control, many may perceive them as promiscuous.

This negative perception leads girls to not take the ideal steps when they're sexually active. In reality birth control can have many benefits for girls including regulating menstrual cycles, taming unbearable period cramps, getting rid of acne and many others. Sex education should be taught at school and at home.

If teens are taught about the benefits of birth control, they may be more open to considering it as a method of contraception.

“It’s more of a courage thing to get it [birth control]. Like when I was younger and thought about getting it. I was afraid to mention or ask since sex is looked down upon. I was afraid to let people know I was active or planning on being active, especially in a mexican household,” Cassandra Hernandez, Rose State psychology major said.

The Oklahoma City State Fair Park hosts a handful of events this summer. The annual OQHA Redbud Spectacular Horse Show will run from June 1-11. The Oklahoma Gun Show is on June 3 and June 4, along with Junk Utopia (vintage, junk, handmade and antiques show) and the Repticon Reptile & Exotic Animal Expo. The Indie Trunk Show and the International Dog Show will start on June 10 and the International Dog Show will continue through June 11. The R.K. Gun Show and the Mega Animal Adoption Fun Fest are on June 17 and 18, Take pART in the Fair is on June 22, the NRHA Derby is from June 25 - July 1 and the Oklahoma City Summer Classic dog show is from June 28-July 2. July is packed with enjoyable events, from the Oklahoma City Philharmonic “Red, White & Boom” orchestra performance and fireworks display on July 3 to the New World Comic Con on July 29. There will also be several horse shows, a jewelry show, a quilting show and a bridal show throughout the month of July. Most of these events are free of admission to the public. The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma has several special exhibits on display, as well as numerous educational collections of its own. Currently, the museum is partnered with the National Weather Center to display the National Weather Center Biennale, in which much of the art pieces focus on the beauty of weather. This exhibition will continue through June 19. The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is a popular destination for all ages, as there is quite a variety of exhibitions, including ones that will only be here through the summer. Another great place to take the family is the Sam Noble Museum, also located in Norman. One of its current special exhibits is Ugly Bugs! presentation, meant to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the ugly bug contest. There will be a display of largerthan-life photos of bugs from the competition, which is designed to spark the interests of young students in areas of microscopy and entomology. Lives lost: Factory Conditions of the major U.S. Importers

When people buy clothes it costs money, but the majority of the time that’s not all it costs.

A large amount of retailers are known for manufacturing merchandise in other countries, primarily countries like China and Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is the second largest ready-made garment exporter in the world.

Some of the factories in Bangladesh produce clothing for big name brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, H&M, Gap and Abercrombie & Fitch.

Factories excel in producing product for buyers but do not excel in producing fair wages or working conditions for employees.

This is prevalent considering the series of industrial disasters in Bangladesh throughout recent years. In November 2012, a textile factory fire broke out, resulting in 112 deaths because the factory did not have sufficient fire exits. This could have been prevented if the factory’s basic fire safety guidelines in the workplace were maintained. Five months later, in 2013, one of the world’s largest industrial tragedies was the Rana Plaza building collapse. The collapse was caused by structural issues and killed more than 1,000 people. Most recently, in September 2016, a factory boiler explosion. The explosion killed at least 23.

These working conditions proved not only to be dangerous, but fatal. After the collapse in 2013, Bangladesh experienced a large amount of international push to improve its worker safety.

The Rana Plaza building collapse immediately caught the attention of the United States and the European Union. As a result, the United States suspended trade benefits under the Generalized System of Preferences and created the Bangladesh Action Plan of 2013 to consider reinstatement of the GSP to Bangladesh. The GSP is a system of exemptions on tariffs from the general rules of the World Trade Organization. The action plan encouraged the Bangladeshi government to take action for improving worker’s safety reforms and working conditions in accordance with the EU’s Bangladesh-International Labor Organization.

The reforms laid out in the action plan are labor standards to improve working conditions

of employees in consultation with the ILO. The Department of Labor listed the requirements of the agreement online. To name a few, all factories are required to have inspections for building, fire and labor standards in consultation with the ILO and must provide safety training to employees in case of a disaster. The employees should also have access to an employee hotline to report any danger or violation of worker’s rights. If there are factories that are not compliant with the ILO standards, the factories could be closed or relocated.

The push to improve worker safety came not only from government policies, but also from retailers. Retailers work directly with union organizations to ensure factories are keeping up a fair workplace and to protect their brand.

The Bangladesh Worker Safety Alliance is an organization that works to improve the lives of employees by ensuring factory members maintain workplace standards similar to those laid out by the ILO. James Moriarty, Country Director of Bangladesh Worker Safety Alliance, explained how the Alliance’s members are a group made up of 29 apparel companies, retailers and brands. The majority of North American garment importers from Bangladesh are members of the Alliance, according to Moriarty. Moriarty also said in 2015 the Bangladesh labor laws were reformed to establish democratically-elected Safety Committees, and “specific requirements of Safety Committees were put in place with the Bangladesh Labour Rules of 2015, which require factories with 50 or more workers to form democratically-elected safety committees comprised equally of workers and management.” These are helpful to reform safety regulations, but do not address the low wages of workers.

All this push should result in drastic change for Bangladeshi workers, right? Well, the conditions have improved since 2013. Employees can have confidence in safer workplaces, at these those of which adhere to the standards listed. An article in the New York Times from February said that only 10 percent of factories have registered unions. This could mean many of them do not comply with international safety requirements.

Another factor that hasn’t been reformed since 2013 is the minimum wage for these workers. The minimum wage is 32 cents an hour. This is not enough for families to live

on and, as a result, labor activists and union members started protesting early December 2016 at the Windy Apparels Factory in Ashulia, a city just outside the capitol of Bangladesh.

The protest sparked a domino-effect and many other factory employees, union members and worker’s rights activists joined in protesting.

According to a letter addressed to North American retailers from the Worker’s Rights Consortium, a labor union organization, an estimated 1,500 workers were fired or suspended from their jobs due to the protests, and some of these factories filed criminal complaints under the 1974 Special Powers Act. Laura Gutierrez of the Worker’s Rights Consortium said the Special Powers Act allows for violation of the right to due process. Over a period of a few days, not only did some of the workers lose their jobs and face criminal charges, but 38 activists and union members were reported to be detained or were charged by the police later that month. At the time, it caused 59 factories to suspend production.

Today, the workers are no longer being detained. “All 38 union leaders and workers who are known to have been detained have now been released; however, none of the criminal complaints under which they were arrested have been withdrawn,” Gutierrez said.

The New York Times confirmed criminal complaints were filed against the same big name brand retailers.

There was plenty of international pressure to allow the detainees to be released, according to Gutierrez.

“However, the crisis is not over and we continue to urge brands to require their suppliers to withdraw all criminal complaints and offer of reinstatement to all workers who were suspended, terminated or pressured to resign following the wage protests,” she said.

The New York Times also said that Bangladesh is a “low-wage” country, meaning that they want to silence the workers to keep their labor cheap, since the garment industry accounts for 80 percent of the country’s foreign exports.

From the multiple industrial tragedies to the poor wages, these employees are stuck in this way of life. It’s up to the industry’s buyers to push for the protection of these workers and pursue repercussions when Bangladesh fails to comply with agreements.

Rose State’s Radiography and Medical Laboratory Technology programs just went through the process of reaccreditation and announced both programs were given the highest amount of years of reaccreditation they could receive.

“Ten years reaccreditation is the longest time that a program in this field can be reaccredited, so it is a huge honor to have received this,” Carlo Ledesma, professor and director of the Med Lab Technology program, said. Ledesma has been the director of the Med Lab Technology program since 2014. He is passionate about his job, the Med Lab program and education in general.

He has been trying to make as many positive changes as he can to make the program better and to help the students succeed.

“The process of preparing for the reaccreditation is a lengthy one because it is broken down into so many different parts,” Ledesma went on to explain. “In this par-

ticular instance, this is something that we have been working on since 2014 up until now. Collecting informational input from alumnae, staff and students is only one part of all the data and information that has to be gathered together for the reaccreditation process to be able to move forward.”

Each one of the seven medical/dental programs Rose offers has to go through a reaccreditation process every five to 10 years to ensure proper standards.

The process is one that generally takes a year or more, because not only does information need to be gathered together and reviewed, but also on-site evaluations happen in-between the reaccreditation time to make sure everything in the paperwork completed by the program seeking reaccreditation is actually being done by the faculty and staff.

Depending on the results of the on-site visit, certain things might need to be changed if they are not up to standard or if anything is viewed as a red flag.

For at least the last two years, both the Med Lab Tech program and the Radiogra-

phy program saw 100 percent success rates with their students passing both the program at Rose and the credential exams that allow for students to practice in the U.S. “The Radiologic Technology Program has been Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology accredited since 1974. The award of eight years continued accreditation is the highest awarded. This is the second time we have received the maximum length,” Jonnye Griffin, director of the Radiography Technology program, said.

Since 1974 when the programs began at Rose, up until this point, there has not been a time where any of the medical/dental programs at Rose have failed to recieve reaccreditation.

“Getting the reaccreditation is like getting a stamp of approval on our program.

Without that stamp of approval, we would not be able to keep these programs going here at Rose and that would mean medical students here would not be able to take the classes they need,” Dan Points, Dean of the Health Science Division, stated.

Iconic Image from Oklahoma City Bombing A sister’s account of a symbolic photo

April 18, 1995, was a day like any other for the people of Oklahoma City. In an apartment building located in downtown OKC a baby girl celebrated her first birthday with family members. She ate her birthday cake and opened the presents that she never got a chance to play with. Across the city, a firefighter arrives home from a long day of work and eats dinner with his wife and 2-year -old son.

These two families went on with their nights not knowing tomorrow would bring a day neither would ever forget.

April 19, 1995, began like every other day. The sun shined brightly as the people of OKC started their day. Little did they know that 9:01 a.m. would be the last normal minute of their day. At 9:02 a.m. a bomb exploded the Alfred P. Mur rah Federal Building, shaking the entire country. As first responders began to arrive and help the people trapped in the building, two ordinary citizens happened to capture a picture that would later become the symbol of the tragic event. The picture is of Chris Fields, one of the responding firefighters, cradling an already deceased baby girl that a police officer had pulled from the rubble. The baby girl in his arms was Baylee Almon, a child from the second floor daycare center in the Federal building. The picture was known to many across the country as a symbol but, to those two families, was a very gory photo that would haunt them for years to come.

Why America Viewed it as a Symbol?

Everywhere you look in America you see a symbol or logo of some sort.

Restaurants, brands, and even businesses have a symbol or logo to help people instantly recognize them. This is a very common pattern to the citizens of Amer ica. When the picture was released to the media by Time and Newsweek magazines, people across the country began immediately associating that photo with the event. This is how they would recognize what happened on April 19 for the rest of time. The picture became iconic as it was put on novelty items like T -shirts and belt buckles for people to buy as souvenirs. The gruesome image that portrayed a dead child and a saddened firefighter was no longer seen as such. Though, as America continued to view it as a symbol, other people across the world could see the violence it por trayed.

“Outside the United States, Porter’s photo featured in all British newspapers except the Sun, which believed the level of gore in the photo was unacceptable for the general reading public. The Independent printed it in black-and-white for the same reason. The Guardian, which shared the Sun’s convictions when the photo first appeared, printed it on the bombing’s first anniversary,” according to a blog post by Alex Selwyn Holmes.

What the Picture Represented The gory picture did hold a meaning.

The 1-year -old baby girl became a symbol of the innocence lost that day. Aren Almon-Kok, the mother of the baby, stated, “The picture became a symbol to us as well. Seeing it as a symbol became a coping mechanism. It would have been harder to cope and to grieve if I hadn’t.

It really portrays the innocence lost that day. It shows how everybody that died that day was somebody’s child.”

People from around the world saw it as a symbol of destruction and sadness. Before April 19, 1995, no picture of a recognizable deceased human being had ever been shared with the public.

It shocked the nation to see Baylee in that state which was another reason the public began to only see the picture as a symbol.

Was the Picture’s Impact a Good One? As the baby’s little sister, my opinion on the picture and its impact can vary. It has always been painful to see that iconic yet gory photo in my textbooks at school and to always be known as “America’s Angel’s little sister.” Although, I also think the impact the picture made was a good one. While that picture will always stand to remind my family of what we lost that day, it will always be a symbol of the history of our great state. I, for one, am proud of my big sister and how the horrible thing that happened to her also affected so many peoples’ lives in a good way. While she might have only been a year old at the time of the bombing her life is still celebrated and remembered 22 years after the bombing and 23 years after her birth. The question still stands thoughis the picture too gory? While my family and the firefighter’s family can agree that it is not something we like to look at, it brings us comfort knowing how the rest of the world sees it as a symbol and not the horrifically gory picture it is. It is evident that the iconic picture of the baby in the fireman’s arms from the OKC bombing has made a huge and positive impact in the world.

Sweat, swim, hit the gym: Rose State’s Wellness Center

The Aquatics Center provides open swim times for any Rose State student, faculty or staff.

rooms have daily-use lockers, lockers for rent, showers, restrooms and weight scales.

In addition to all of the resources available to Rose State students in the Aquatics Center, there are many services also available. These services include: open lap and open recreational swims, towel service, special events and workshops.

There are classes available for college credit: Beginning Swim, Intermediate Swim, Lifeguarding, W.S.I., Aquatic Fitness, Lifeguard Instructor and H2O Strength Training.

For students not looking to gain college credit, the Aquatics Center also offers classes such as: Water Aerobics, Low Intensity Water Aerobics, Aqua Dance, H2O Strength Training and Learn to Swim.

A few youth swim classes offered in the Aquatics Center are the: Raiders Swim Team and Learn to Swim classes including: Parent Tot, Pre-School, Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Junior Guard, Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor.

Students can become certified lifeguards at the Rose State Aquatics Center. Instruction and certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Oxygen Administration and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer is available for students seeking lifeguarding experience.

Summer is coming up soon, but that does not mean students should take a break from fitness. Finals leave students feeling drained and exhausted, but they can revitalize and energize before the hot summer days arrive. Students can build muscle in the weight room or do laps in the pool; either way, the Rose State Wellness and Aquatics Center is the place to work out. Students who have not already visited Rose State’s Wellness Center, should check it out. Head over to the Wellness Center to get in shape to sculpt the perfect beach body just in time for summer.

What is so great about the Wellness Center anyway? Well, for starters it is free for students at Rose State. Students paying for school can avoid paying a monthly gym membership fee. Rose State makes it easy to stay in shape by making it easier on students’ wallets.

Another reason students should take advantage of the Wellness Center is because there are so many features offered to students that other gyms might not have.

The Wellness Center is a great place to work out because there are so many different machines and kinds of workout equipment readily available for students.

From leg curl machines, treadmills and stationary bikes, to hand weights and weight benches, there is plenty of equipment to go around.

Diego Cedillos, Wellness Center staff and pre-medicine major, said, “We have tons of equipment here for students. There’s all kinds of weights and exercise machines here. The Wellness Center has more than fitness equipment. “We have the basketball court, heated pool and sauna, as well,” Cedillos said.

The Wellness Center also incorporates the Wellness Assessment Lab, which offers risk factors, body fat, flexibility, blood pressure, muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance screenings. The screenings are free for students enrolled at Rose State, and $15 for the public.

Students who have classes in the Wellness Center can store their items in a locker with a combination lock for the entire semester. Students who do not have classes there can still use a locker in the locker rooms, but they will have to supply their own lock.

Besides the storage security of the locker rooms, both the men’s and women’s locker rooms are protected by an automatic lock and I.D. scanner. Both locker rooms have showers and a restroom inside for convenience.

Another great resource at the Wellness Center, is the Aquatics Center, featuring a 25-meter, six-lane indoor heated swimming pool, a whirlpool, a sauna, four locker rooms and two family-unit dressing rooms.

The depth of the pool ranges from 4 feet at the shallow end to 13 feet, and it has a ramp for handicapped access. The locker

A Look at OKC’s growing comedy scene

by Tyray Yener Staff Writer Some of the most well known comics are featured at Looney Bin Comedy on North Rockwell Avenue in Oklahoma City on Wednesday nights.

Twitter amasses a huge discussion board as the regular attendees and comics alike anticipate the following week’s highlighted comic routines.

Crowds of recurring guests and those new to the art mingle before they are led to their reserved seats. Many who engage or observe the comedy scene in Oklahoma City have seen a transformation over the past several years. James Nghiem, mass communication adjunct professor at Rose State and long-time comedian, described the growth over the 10 years he has being doing comedy.

“When I first started, there would be a few comedians and you may know everyone by name.

Now there may be a room of people performing that night and you don’t know anyone, so it’s more impersonal,” he said.

Looney Bin Comedy Clubs are located in Little Rock, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Wichita. Also, Othello’s, ACM, Grease Trap and Speakeasy in Oklahoma City cater to the comedy scene. Lo-

Places such as the Ice Event Center and Grill are offering amateur nights on Saturdays and free admissions into open mics on Thursdays to invite the community to become more involved in the culture. Nghiem also indicted how comics build on their work and evolve over time, explaining what audiences typically look for in comics.

“Life experiences I think are what most people look for in a comic. People don’t like fake, and eventually everybody just kind of finds their niche in material used in their stand-ups,” he said.

The Zu Sports Grill is beginning to add to its atmosphere by incorporating open mic comedy routines into their business.

Matt Raney runs the online forum, Footlight Comedy. He promotes and on occasion coordinates events posted within the website.

“Compared to a few years back, there is definitely much more of an open door that businesses are willing to give in showcasing venues, such as comedy. There is really starting to be more outlets for comedians and poets in this region of the country to do gigs,” Raney said.

For those interested, the website provides the scheduling for comedy events going on around

Oklahoma City. However, with Footlight Comedy, it also offers guests the opportunity to make an appearance and sign up for their go at open mic comedy. In part, it can be suggestive to why comedy has grown within greater Oklahoma City, essentially due to the environment it’s hosted within. Many bars, lounges and restaurants already present the relaxed atmosphere for people to feel less pressured and become more active.

Comedy has grown in many ways over the past few years in Oklahoma City. Apparently, Oklahoma is getting attention from national comedians, like Lil Duval that are now passing through while doing cross-country touring.

The LMAO Comedy Show is set to be one of the biggest upcoming events in Oklahoma, especially beaconing upstart comedians with a now probable belief of also achieving a noted career. Hosted at the Hudiburg Chevrolet Center, audiences can expect special appearances by major names in comedy entertainment on March 11, 2018. Because of this trending growth, many comics can develop a name for themselves by the platform they choose.

Nghiem explained that apart from his teaching, he has a great devotion to comedy. “I first got into comedy because of my friends, now I do comedy about two or three times a week,” he said.

People start talking when they are babies. The age differs from person to person but babies start to use the early versions of “mom” and “dad” saying “mama” and “dada,” between 18 months and 2 years. The language starts shaping and babies start learning their native languages. As people grow up, some might add a couple of more languages to their lexicon.

There are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the world today; however, about 2,000 of those languages are not commonly spoken. Although the most popular spoken language is Mandarin Chinese and English is the international trade language. In non-English speaking countries, English is usually the second required language.

Learning another language is scary for many people, especially if one has not had the chance to experience another language at school or in the surrounding environment. In today’s world, second and even third languages are required for most students, but only a few of them learn the required languages and speak them fluently.

It is even harder to learn another language when you are older. Scientifically, younger people tend to learn a language more easily and correctly but it does not mean an older person cannot learn another language. In some cases, people need to learn foreign languages because of their business, or maybe just because they want to learn. Rose State has a program called ESL (English as a Second Language) and its main goal is to help students who are non-native English speakers.

English as a Second Language classes are available to Rose State students as well as the entire community.

Russian. When he came to the U.S., he wanted to be able to communicate with other people.

“He spoke no English, and he knew no sounds,” said Chris Knox, Rose State reading professor and director of CLICK (community in learning and critical knowledge) group.

Dogsomjav Damb and his daughter, Delgerdalai Dogsomjav, are two of the many foreign students who are currently enrolled in the ESL program.

Dogsomjav and Delgerdalai enrolled in the ESL program together and have been making progress toward becoming fluent in English.

“He was very diligent. He was 80 but really sharp.

His daughter told me when he left he would go home and he would practice,” Professor Knox added.

The linguistic differences often made it hard to learn English for the father and daughter. One of the differences Dogsomjav pointed out was, in Mongolian, there are not many different sounds for the letters in their language. “A” is “A” in Mongolian. However, in English, the letter “a” could be “A,” or “Ah.” Many words can be said differently in English. In Mongolian, a word can only be said one

way.

The ESL program is free and open to many non-native English speakers. “They come in and we test them. We test them on reading and grammar,” Knox said. RSC language professors work closely with the students. Some of the students might be fast track students, who need to learn basic communication skills, or they could be students who want to learn English. They have many students with different needs, so instead of a traditional textbook curriculum, the professors go from student to student to help them with what they need.

“It’s all individualized. Everyone is working on their own level. We let them choose what areas they want to work in. We have students from all over the world,” continued Knox.

“The program is also designed to help high school students who are preparing for future college admission and other members of the greater Oklahoma City community who simply wish to improve their English language skills,” according to rose. edu.

MLT places first at Quiz Bowl

Rose State’s Medical Laboratory Science and Technician program made a big win Friday, April 19 when they took home the championship title at the One Voice seminar at St. Francis Hospital. The seminar was sponsored by both the Oklahoma Society for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and Oklahoma Society of American Medical Technologists.

A total of eight statewide teams attended the seminar and took part in the competition, but despite the other strong competitors, Rose State came out on top.

“We had a Quiz Bowl and competed with other MLT programs and bachelor’s level Medical Laboratory Science programs all over Oklahoma,” Carlo Ledesma, Rose State professor and director of the Med Lab Technology program, said. “The last Quiz Bowl was held in 1996 and Rose State College MLT Program was the champion then and still is now,” he said.

First Community College professor awarded excellence in teaching Honor

Each year, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence honors five teachers in Oklahoma with a Medal for Excellence in Teaching at the Regional University/Community College.

This year marks the first time a community college professor won this award. Rose State Humanities Professor Antoinette Castillo received the honor. She will be honored May 20 at the foundation’s televised Academic Awards Banquet in Tulsa, where she will receive her Medal for Excellence in Teaching, a glass “Roots and Wings” sculpture, as well as $5,000.

“Professor Castillo’s passion for teaching is evident in the hours she spends conferencing with her many students (there is always a line out her door) and sharing best practices with her colleagues. She is tireless in her commitment to excellence and is a past recipient of Rose State’s Excellence in Teaching Award,” Dianne Krob, composition and humanities professor, said.

Castillo has been a professor at Rose State for more than 20 years.

“If I had to limit it to three words, I would say “student-centered,” “tireless,” and “dedicated,” said Claudia Buckmaster, Dean of Humanities, when describing Castillo. “I can’t stop at three. She is also compassionate, perceptive, intelligent and contem-

She has not only helped students as a professor, but also as a co-founder of the Rose State CLICK program, where students are able to receive specialized tutoring, mentoring, organizational supplies and support, degree advisement and assistance with campus resources. She also gives her time to teaching free English as a Second Language classes at Rose every Monday and Wednesday night.

“Professor Castillo believes in her students and serves as a resource to them. When I returned to college I doubted that I would even graduate with my associate degree, now I am at UCO working toward my bachelor’s and planning to continue through my master’s. She believed in me so much

that I saw the possibilities in my own life,” Elizabeth Tabak, a former student and current volunteer for ESL, said.

Castillo is also an administrator of Rose State’s writing program and, as such, she has helped to re-design Rose State’s writing instruction in order to help students save money on textbooks by creating online writing course materials for them to use.

“Professor Castillo has used her training, experience and leadership to turn the RSC writing program into a research-based program that takes into account the needs of all academic disciplines as well as incorporating the principles of transformative learning,” Buckmaster explained.

The awards ceremony will be televised statewide at 8 p.m. May 28 on OETA.

The Benefits of traveling

Wanderlust - a strong desire to travel - this simple word and its meaning can be impactful on people who dream to travel around the world. It is one of the things that every human should experience. People are caught up with their jobs, their studies and other priorities. People have reasons to keep them away from making their dreams come true.

Students forget about the lessons that come with real life experiences. Learning math or American history is important, but we learn every single day through our experiences.

One educational experience is traveling.

There are endless options to go out and make memories. Those adventures can be found in Oklahoma, out of the state or country. It is one’s job to choose and follow their dreams. It does not have to be expensive or extreme traveling but it will be beneficial for sure.

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then it turns you into a storyteller,” said Ibn Mattuta, a Moroccan traveler recognized as one of the greatest travelers of all time.

People never stop learning and experiencing new things. Experiences help us develop our knowledge every day. Traveling could be a different form of education. One learns things that cannot be learned in any other way or learns many things at the same time.

“Travel is one of the best teachers because experiences teach so much,” said Sherri Mussatto, English professor at Rose State.

People might not be aware of the options

around them. One of the great things about traveling is that there are several options to choose from and experience. Traveling does not have to be expensive and a trip does not have to be to Japan or somewhere far away.

“Traveling might not be the most economic form of activity for a student, but there are a lot of options available just for students. I believe a trip that’s worth the money should be planned thoroughly and you should stick to the plan. But at a young age people like to be more spontaneous, and traveling to a place they have been curious about for years might become the time of their lives and the memories they gain will definitely be worth the money,” said Idil Ozerklig, who has been in Barcelona and Amsterdam with the Education First crew for a cultural trip.

For starters, being a local tourist is the best option. A state can offer many things so traveling regionally is an inexpensive and exciting option. Few people look in their own backyard for adventure. We have access to the Internet with limitless sources. If people do research properly, they might come across interesting ideas within the state.

Camping is a different experience one can do with friends in the state or in neighboring states. Camping fees in national parks are usually around $20, though this number may differ from state to state. As an example, one can go hike in the Wichita Mountains and hike for free and camp in Doris Campground for $20.

“A person can see so many wonderful things in the United States and even within our own state or the surrounding states.

Even day trips and short weekend trips can

be full of great learning opportunities. There are so many wonderful museums and historical sites that are well worth our time to explore,” Mussatto added.

As people expand the scope of their travel, they might have to expand their budget too.

However, it does not mean that their trip has to be expensive. Travel blogs and travel experts show great ways to book inexpensive flights and accommodations inside or outside the country.

“I think traveling gives one a chance to escape from their ordinary lives and learn new things, places, meet with new people. It renovates the soul,” said Ayse Beril Heral, a student at Bilkent University and a candidate for the Erasmus European Exchange Program in Madrid, Spain.

Differences separate everyone from each other and traveling is a way to appreciate uniqueness. Traveling helps people to experience the world outside the box and teaches important lessons.

“I think it also makes us more responsible and aware. It lets us get out of our shells a bit,” Ozerklig continued.

Traveling affects everyone differently. It makes one miss home and appreciate the things that one has. It changes the way one looks at people and helps one to conquer fears in time.

“It has taught me simple things, like how to board a plane or train, how not to be shy when you need to ask for directions. But it also helped me widen my perspective on almost everything. It made me a less biased and a more conscious person,” Ozerklig added.

Hello 2017 Graduates!

It’s an exciting time to celebrate accomplishments and commemorate a life-changing achievement. The administration, faculty and staff of Rose State College want to congratulate you on your hard-earned success and upcoming graduation!

We are days away from the 2017 Commencement ceremony, and as each graduate walks across the stage, please reflect on how every step takes you closer to a new beginning. Earning that associate degree or certificate bridges the gap between hopes and the arrival of a new chapter in a life.

Many of you will proceed forward to earn a bachelor’s degree, while others will go out into the workforce.

For many, this journey has not been easy. Arriving to campus, nerves may have

fluttered like crazy butterflies, and the uneasiness of the road that lay ahead felt overwhelming. Financial hardships, working day jobs and trying to attend class at night with the question, “Can I even get through this?” swirling every semester. It might have felt like graduation was always out of reach.

However, it’s here – the finish line. You are well prepared for the next journey!

More and more students see the value of Rose State College’s quality education and our motto of Going Somewhere Starts Here. There will be well over 1,000 students conferred with degrees and or a certificate.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of all of these students, we now have the pleasure of hosting three separate commencement ceremonies on May 5, 2017. The Hudiburg Chevrolet Center on campus will be the site. Students graduating with Social

Sciences and Engineering & Sciences degrees will walk across the stage starting at 11 a.m. the Business & Information Technology and Health Sciences ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. Last but not least, Humanities will round out the day with commencement at 5 p.m. Please don’t forget that the college plans to live-stream all three ceremonies on the Rose State YouTube channel.

So family and friends unable to attend can still be a part of this memorable day.

Thank you for choosing Rose State College as the starting point for your journey of discovery. I look forward to seeing each of you at commencement to offer my personal congratulations on this defining milestone!

Major Spotlight: Geosciences

Geosciences is a major that involves many forms of earth sciences. These include studies of the geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and atmosphere. Since it has many types of studies, this major is classified as an all-inclusive major. This means that there are several career choices that can be pursued with this degree: Meteorology, petroleum engineering, archeology and geology are some of the career options one can choose to pursue with this degree.

The goal of having a geosciences associate degree here at Rose State is to prepare anyone interested in this major for future progressions. Anyone who is interested in this major may graduate with an associate degree or decide to transfer to a four-year school.

Perhaps they may even do both. Steve Carano, geosciences coordinator, Eric Johnson, professor of geology, and Nick Bastani, engineering and science division adviser, will be ready to help plan out the best academic

route for this major.

An associate degree in geosciences, like all majors, has requirements that need to be completed before advancing in this course.

To earn this degree, 63 credit hours are needed in total. There are also classes that must be passed in order to be ready for the next one. These classes may be available in day, evening and even online. According to Professor Johnson, courses may only be offered one semester per year. He also said there may be a chance of waiting a year if certain requirements are not met. Getting in contact with these professors and the adviser could help anyone in this major find the best plan of action.

“You can start with the basics, kind of figure out what you like what you don’t and there are a lot of different avenues you can branch out from there,” Johnson said. There are many opportunities out there with this major. Finding interesting courses can help you decide what direction you would like to take. Although many of these classes may easily be transferred to four-year universities, some may also be taken up as elective credits.

Bastani mentioned that oftentimes the

professors know a more on this major. “Although this may be true, each of our staff would have sufficient knowledge to help anyone interested in geosciences throughout the program,” Bastani said. “They will be able to plan details out on what is best for people taking part. Many careers may also be found with some hands-on training and understanding how the earth works.”

Geosciences includes weather and earth studies in a broad range of topics. Some parts may even help pave a path to one’s true interest. Certainly there are employers in the world looking for people with degrees in geosciences. The staff in this program at Rose State will help students reach the goal of being prepared for what may come after the program.

“There is a site that can be used to predict the wind, the jet stream and all the conditions going on that day with the forecast, so that they kind of have a general idea of where to retrieve all of your equipment once it comes back down,” Sandi Teel a professor from Carl Albert explained.

She is one of the members that is taking part in this project and helping to get everything ready to go.

“We also need to find a way to get the cameras to take the pictures themselves since there won’t be anyone up there to press the shutter and the pictures are another important part of this project. Ideally, there would be a camera facing towards the horizon, a camera looking down towards the ground and another camera looking up towards the balloon,” Teel went on to explain.

There is no solid date set for when the air balloon will be officially launching as it is dependent on the weather being stable enough so that the project will succeed, but the predicted dates for the launch are May 12 or 13.
