Club Spotlight: Student Senate

The Student Senate is a way to be a part of the college and community. Student Senate President Sarah Stewart stated, “the Student Senate works to bridge the gap between our students and our administration.

We help students, on and off campus, make the changes and improvements they wish to see and experience here at Rose State.”

Student Senate welcomes people who want change and have ideas on how to implement that change.

“Our meetings are always open [for students] to sit in and listen and to even contribute to the process. We are involved in several community service events throughout the year. We try our best to connect with students and our community. Anyone one can run for a seat and we strongly encourage it. Student Senate is a great way to make connections and really make a difference here at Rose State College,” Stewart said.

The Student Senate meets every Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Student Center, right outside of the Hub. Students interested in joining the Senate or interested in making a 10/10/16 difference can contact Stewart at sarah-stewart@raider.rose.edu or at (405) 596-2045.

45th Presidential Inauguration “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” With these words, Donald J. Trump took the oath of office to formally become the 45th President of the United States of America Jan. 20, 2017. Celebrations took place from Thursday, Jan. 19 to Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017. Trump maintained his campaign platform when he gave his inaugural speech.

“Today, we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another, or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C., and giving it back to you, the people,” he said.

A total of nine main events took place in the 58th Inaugural Ceremony: Morning Worship Service, Procession to the Capitol, Vice President’s Swearing-in Ceremony, President’s Swearing-in Ceremony, Inaugural Address, Departure of Outgoing President, Inaugural Luncheon, Inaugural Parade and Inaugural Ball.

The National Anthem was sung by Jackie Evancho, a 16-year-old singer who has gained success and fame after her appearance on “America’s Got Talent.” It was a difficult time for the Trump team to find a big-name performer such as Beyonce who had performed at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration in 2009, since many of the big-name artists did not

Inauguration Day was not the first official performance by Evancho. She had also performed for Obama in 2010 at the Lighting of the National Christmas Tree.

She became the youngest performer who performed on Inauguration Day. The head of state of the US has been a president since 1789. It was the year when George Washington was elected and inaugurated as president of the United States of America. He was inaugurated for the first time on April 30, 1789, and for the

second time on March 4, 1793. Subsequent inaugurations were held on March 4 until the second inauguration of President Franklin Roosevelt on Jan. 20, 1937.

Trump reiterated his dedication to America coming first during his decision-making.

“We assembled here today are issuing a new decree … from this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward, it’s going to be only America First.

America first!,” Trump said.

As of noon Jan. 20 Trump officially began his presidency.

Make the smart choice when choosing a smartwatch Technology constantly evolves. Every year we have hundreds of new gadgets surface. Not only are devices emerging, but also technological advancements are constantly being made. Apple, Samsung and other popular tech companies release updated versions for many of their devices yearly.

Smartwatches have been around for a long time. The standards for considering a watch “smart” have changed with technology. The first smartwatches were considered smart because of their ability to act as a calculator. Now smartwatches are basically phones worn on the wrist.

Apple did not release the first smartwatch. Samsung and Sony had models of watches that had many capabilities of the modern smart watch.

Since then, we have had companies emerge, profiting only from smartwatches like Fitbit, Garmin, Pebble and Misfit.

There is a wide variety of watches and they are all made to cater to a specific purpose, finding the right watch may not be easy.

Many watches are marketed as activity trackers to appeal to people interested in maintaining their health. For people who are looking to obtain healthier habits and are less interested in the phone capabilities of watches, Fitbit and Garmin watches may be a perfect fit. Fitbit sells many versions, ranging from the simple Alta tracker, which does not have a display, to the Blaze, that is touch screen and receives notifications from smartphones. Fitbit and Garmin

trackers are able to keep track of steps, calories burned, stairs climbed and distance traveled.

Depending on the model, the watch may have additional features like a heart sensor, which will keep track of heartbeats per minute and sleep tracking to know how long you slept and describe the quality of your sleep. Also most of these will be either waterproof or water resistant. The price range for the trackers are anywhere from $80-230.

On the other hand, people who are looking for quick access to their smart phone and notifications can opt for a watch like the Fitbit Blaze and Surge, Samsung Gear, Fossil smartwatches or the Apple Watch.

These watches have the same capabilities of the trackers: tracking steps, calories, stairs and distance but also allow you to text or call from the watch itself without having to pull out the phone. They also allow access to certain apps that are compatible like Instagram and may also be water resistant. Of course, the features depend on the brand and model.

Style of the watches vary. The Apple Watch features a rectangular face and about a 35-36 mm band width. The size of the screen comes in 42mm and 38mm. The watch has one button and a gear on the side to scroll. The operating system for the watch is Apple. The iWatch is only compatible with Apple devices. Apple Watch owner Mina Onan said, “ I am not sure if it is really worth buying if you are not an active person.”

Samsung Gear features a circular display

which is about 33mm. The watch also has two buttons and a turning gear that circles the watch face. The Samsung watch will work with other Android devices and Apple.

“My old smartwatch[Gear S2] now works with my iPhone. Well it doesn’t actually work as well as most people would want but it’s now pairable which is a start. I like the Apple watch more than the Samsung one,” said RSC student Quincy Runnels.

Fossil has a wide variety of smartwatches that differ in design. Most include at least one button or gear. They are round in design and have the classic watch style.

The size of the watches vary, but they have up to 42mm in case size. Although the operating system is Android, Fossil watches are compatible with Apple devices as well.

Fitbit and Garmin trackers mostly feature small displays on the most basic versions of the watches. The Fitbit Blaze is about 40mm. The Fitbit Blaze smoothly operates with Android, Apple and Windows devices.

Tax season: Web sources to maximize returns Gallup Incorporated conducted a poll on the opinion of the American tax payer. The poll asked, “Do you regard the income tax which you will have to pay this year as fair?” 50% said, yes( fair), 47% said no(not fair) and 3% had no opinion. “If you make money then it benefits you to pay, because you’ll get a lot more of that money back as a refund,” said Oklahoma Tax Commission,Communications Division Director Paula Ross.

Either way, preparing taxes by one’s self can be grueling, so the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers what it calls IRS Free File.

Inside of Free File there are a number of ways to file for free: Turbo Tax, H&R Block and Tax Slayer. Just remember to read the fine print to see what adjusted gross income applies.

According to Ross, online filing software assists the prepper by correcting mistakes.

Students who pay college tuition with no Financial Aid or scholarships may qualify for a tax exemption.

“They’ll calculate the math, if you type something in that doesn’t make sense it’ll flag it and you’ll look and make sure you have the correct information in it.”

IRS.gov will assist with file preparation for free over the phone. In Oklahoma there are four offices that are available to help; however, an appointment must be made prior to asking for help.

Outside of the IRS there are many ways to

file, in some cases there is the one person in the family or group that does everyone’s taxes, some go to a brick and mortar location and pay for accuracy while others are confused as to why others are so anxious to do taxes since they have never filed in their life. “When your income is not at a high level, they’ll let you file for free,” said Ross.

No matter which option, filing taxes can be easy and it is always vital.

Valentine’s Day Dessert Recipe

Chocolate-covered strawberries Ingredients: A box of strawberries 2 plain chocolate bars. (The flavor is your preference. You can use white, dark or milk chocolate bar) A tray Parchment paper Heat your chocolates in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Make sure to keep an eyes on them, otherwise they could boil and you will end up with a big mess.

When your chocolate is melted, dip your strawberries half way down into chocolate and place it on a tray with parchment paper. Put them in the refrigerator for an hour. After an hour the chocolates will be ready to eat!

Paul-less Clippers rout Thunder

Major Spotlight: General Studies

By Andrew Smith Multimedia Editor General Studies, or as it is known now, Liberal Arts, is one of the many majors available to students at Rose State College. If a student doesn’t know what career field they want to go into and are not sure what classes to take, then they may be offered this particular degree path by their adviser.

So what is Liberal Arts? It can be summarized as a shotgun approach to college that allows students to try multiple classes from a multitude of other majors. The curriculum begins with 34 hours of general credits. After that, students will take 28 hours of classes from at least four different majors. The office that oversees the students enrolled in this program is located in the Fine Arts Building.

Cathy Pulver, a former student who returned for an accounting degree recalled her

struggles with possessing a Liberal Arts degree alone. “There’s not much you can do with it. For the most part you need a degree that has to do with your career field,” she said.

She works at the Oklahoma Municipal League as the current accountant while she is currently working toward the degree and will complete it in the near future. Pulver is not allowed the official title and pay of an accountant until she possesses a degree in accounting.

A Liberal Arts degree is best used for someone who wants to continue going to school for at least a bachelor’s degree, but is unsure of a specific career path. Students should keep in mind that this particular degree is a stepping stone, not a jumping off point. The “Academic” page of the RSC website states, “Students are prepared to work on a bachelor’s degree in multiple disciplines, and they leave the program with a plan for their future.”

Of course the central colors for the holiday are shades of red and pink, but burgundy is a great alternative to the bright colors. There is no need for an outfit that is entirely red or pink. Accents of the festive colors can be added to any outfit for the special occasion.

Matte red lipstick is a great touch to makeup and any outfit. To achieve a cute and chic look at the same time, a mini red skirt with black tights would do the trick. If the planned outfit is entirely black then add a pair of burgundy booties for a touch of color.
