February 3 – March 5, 2023

Our vision is to provide high-quality, museum-based art education to students of all ages in Billings and the surrounding region. The YAM education team develops its own art curriculum, aligned with state and national art education standards for our K–12 students. Every lesson is inspired by works from our permanent collection or current temporary exhibitions. We also work with local professional teaching artists to bring a wide variety of techniques and mediums to our adult learners.

Arts education can be a driver of innovative thinking and elevated problem-solving skills. It helps students with the development of fine motor skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and fosters imagination. Arts experiences boost critical thinking, teaching students to take the time to be more careful and thorough in how they observe the world. Yearly programming includes monthly classes for children and adult learners, tours and studio lessons for a variety of groups including K–12 classes, college classes/groups, community clubs, tourism groups, and work outings, two summer camps as well as free programming including FAM at the YAM, YAM Teens, and Connections at the Art Museum in association with the Alzheimer’s Association Montana Chapter. We have long standing partnerships with six different school districts resulting in eight different shows in the YAM’s Young Artists’ gallery. Through our outreach programs, we connect with those who cannot come to the museum by taking art classes to the Montana Women’s Prison, Billings Clinic Youth Partial Hospitalization Program, South Side 316 after school program, and more.

Dear Friends of the Yellowstone Art Museum,

Welcome to the 55th Annual Art Auction at the YAM! This year will continue the museum’s tradition of honoring the work of talented artists with an exhibition, as well as one-of-a-kind events to celebrate the arts in Montana.

Our festivities begin with an Opening Reception and Artist Celebration during the Downtown Billings First Friday on February 3. This is our first ever “Night at the Speakeasy.” Along with a first look at the auction artworks, artists and attendees will enjoy a lively night of music and dancing. I hope you join us for this kick-off!

Throughout the month of February, I invite you to visit the galleries often and enjoy the artwork of regional and national artists. The auction will include works by established and celebrated artists, as well as emerging artists new to this event. At 6 PM on Thursday nights you can connect directly with artists from the auction in the YAM galleries — February 9 meet Larry Bean, February 16 meet Jodi Lightner, and February 23 meet Jon Lodge.

New this year, on Friday, March 3, the YAM will host our first Monster Drawing Rally! This event will be part live art-making performance, part art-bazaar, and part live auction. Artists will create original works from start-to-finish in front of a live audience. Attendees can bid on the artworks right after they are created. It is an exciting opportunity to watch artists in action!

For this year’s auction, bidding will take place online until the closing weekend. Participants near and far can access the user-friendly online platform by visiting the YAM’s website until Thursday, March 2.

Final bidding will take place during the closing night on Saturday, March 4. This night for artists, friends, and patrons will include in-gallery bidding on all auction items, quick finish artists creating artworks on-site, and an opportunity to bid on exclusive packages including memorable travel, unique dining experiences, and live performances. Tickets are available at the museum, or through our website. Don’t miss this final celebration!

Everyone at the YAM thanks the artists who contributed their time and talent to support this key fundraising effort. We could not host this without their generosity!

We also thank our charitable sponsors who make this auction possible. We are grateful to their enthusiasm for the arts in Billings.

Most of all, thank YOU for helping us make this another extraordinary event for the YAM! I hope you bid often — and high! — this month to support our work all year long.

Cheers,

Yellowstone Art Auction 55 2
