Greetings from Christ Church Dunstable! People love a good scare, don’t they? Halloween is a testament to how we relish something a bit creepy - dressing up, decorating houses and gardens with spiderwebs and severed limbs. Growing up, I had a vivid imagination. I would love hearing scary stories by day, but at night my imagination would replay the story and I would become very afraid, checking under the bed, and keeping the lights on. Stories involving aliens and monsters can be great when they’re not causing nightmares but, while they can be put back on the fiction shelf, not all evil tales can. To me, the scariest of all the horror stories are the ones based on actual events. Knowing the evil real people are capable of, or that such an event actually occurred is next-level terrifying.
Jesus wasn’t a decaying corpse roaming the earth once more. Fully alive, he interacted with those around him, speaking to them, eating with them.
The doctor and Bible author Luke says in Acts 1:3, ‘After his suffering, he presented himself to them [his followers] and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive.’ If the zombies are coming you need to run, hide or fight – they’re out to drain your life away. But in Jesus’s resurrection, we see a Saviour who wants to give life rather than take it. Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen to him, that he would die and that he would rise again. But why did Jesus die and rise again? And what’s that got to do with us?
THIS IS THE SCARY BIT OF OUR TRUE STORY...
And yet my favourite book is both true and filled with stories that would be at home in the horror section: reanimated skeletons, giants, sea-monsters, demon possession, spikes through heads; the list goes on. But surprisingly, you won’t find this book next to a Stephen King novel in the library. The book I’m talking about is the Bible. Scary stuff, right? Central to the Bible is the bloody death of Jesus Christ, followed by a hurried burial as night closes in. Then suddenly on the third day, in the dark tomb where his body should be rotting, Jesus’s chest rises as he draws breath, and his heart begins to beat. The executed Jesus moves, sits up and walks out of the tomb.
The Bible tells us that because of our sin, we are the walking dead. Physically alive, we eat and sleep and go to work, but inside we’re spiritually dead because of the evil lurking in our hearts. Like zombies, we’re not properly alive – we’re missing something vital to our humanity: our connection to God. Jesus, God’s Son, came to earth to bring us spiritual life. By bearing the just and rightful punishment for our sins, he took our wrongdoing to the grave and then, beating death itself, he rose-up from the dead, proving he really is the giver of life. This life is offered to you too. Jesus can breathe spiritual life into you, not just for now but for eternity as well.
Zombies are all over horror films and games, but that isn’t what we’re talking about when we talk about Jesus. Zombies are the ‘undead’ but Jesus isn’t ‘undead’ but ‘re-alive’ - resurrected to life again.

Exciting New Play Area Opens At Kingsbury Recreation Ground In Dunstable Dunstable Town Council is proud to announce the opening of its brand-new play area at Kingsbury Recreation Ground. It offers an array of exciting equipment for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy. This much-anticipated redevelopment of the play area will be a focal point for the local community. Located in Kingsbury Recreation Ground, just off Luton Road, the new playground features slides, swings, multiplay units, play panels and climbing challenges, encouraging physical activity and imaginative exploration. There is inclusive play equipment that caters to individuals of all abilities including an accessible seesaw and roundabout. There are also designated picnic spots and seating areas. The opening of the Kingsbury Recreation Ground Play Area marks a significant milestone in Dunstable Town Council’s efforts to provide quality recreational opportunities for residents. Cllr Liz Jones, Dunstable Town Mayor said: “I am really pleased to see the re-development of the play area. The inclusive play equipment that has been installed alongside many other pieces of equipment provides the opportunity for all to come together and enjoy outdoor play. It’s been lovely to have visited over the opening weekend to see how much it is being enjoyed and to have received such positive feedback.” Kingsbury Recreation Ground will also get the addition of a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) at the end of September 2023. This will provide further recreational opportunities as requested by the local community. This will be the first MUGA invested by Dunstable Town Counci.

Help Shape Local Maternity Care Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP) is a NHS working group of women and their families, commissioners and providers (midwives and doctors) working together with the aim of reviewing and improving local maternity care. As your local MVP we are actively seeking input from women that come from a wide range of backgrounds to share their insight. We know that it is only when we hear directly from those who give birth, that can we truly understand the challenges and experiences of parents who are accessing maternity care. We host a number of events for parents, those who are expecting a baby, and people who are planning for pregnancy. We also work with other local organisations such as Flying Start and Healthwatch to deliver workshops and coproduce initiatives in the area. We share best practice with other areas, examine and review the latest evidence-based midwifery and obstetric research, as well as local and national developments, to ensure that local women and their families have access to the best quality maternity services. This handsome boy is Nathaniel, a GSD who was born in June 2020. He is friendly and affectionate, but needs to gain a little confidence. We are working on 1QY y, Beds LU6 Eaton Bra Road, his lead manners Harling s, nel Ken ing cue & Rehom Res n ow Appled as he tends to be rather strong and his new owner will need to commit to carry on with his training. Nathaniel needs an active, outdoorsy family who enjoy good walks. He has a heart murmur which is not causing him any problems at present, but he may need to be monitored. Nathaniel could probably live with another dog pending introductions, but not cats or other small pets. Children 7 years plus.

Durocobrivis
In my last article, I left a hangover question asking what does the name of the staging post Durocobrivis mean ; what was its purpose ; and what was it like as a place? I’ll attempt an answer.
The name is thought to be a romanised version of the original celtic name given to this spot prior to the coming of the Romans. And it is suggested that this original name might have been - there is much conjecture and controversy – Dwrycoedbrefi (or something like that). The great bone of contention, and the cause of considerable argument over the years, is what does Dwr-y-coed-brefi mean? The nearest celtic language we hope might give us a clue is Welsh. And if the Roman name be broken down into syllables, then we start with Dwr (pronounced “dour”) which means “water”. But where’s the water in Dunstable? We have no river, and the only nearby water is the source of the river Ouzel at Well Head, or the source of the river Lea at Leagrave, or the source of the river Ver at Kensworth Lynch. The nearest, and most likely candidate, must surely be the springs at Well Head which, in the time we’re talking about, would have been gushing strongly unlike the flimsy trickle seen today due to so much water having been extracted from a much depleted aquifer in recent years. The second syllable Y (little more than a grunt) simply means “the”; and Coed (pronounced “koyd”) means “wood” (or “forest”). But what does Brefi mean? However, the first three syllables alone could give us “water in the wood” and could well refer to the springs at Well Head which, at the time, would have been surrounded by dense woodland. This translation could be further supported by the suggestion (nothing is certain) that the original crossing of a north-south track with the east-west Neolithic Icknield Way was at the top of West Street - not at the present day crossroads. This possibility arises from the idea that this original north-south track (later evolving into the Watling Street) came over the top of Dunstable Downs, dropped down to the crossing, and continued along Green Lane past Maiden Bower, ie it favoured higher ground rather than the valley later chosen by the Romans. All this means that Dwrycoedbrefi could have been

an early settlement close to Maiden Bower (for ritual purposes?) and for the water at Well Head. There’s another twist in that the final “word”, brefi, might have been “brafis” which means “nice” in Welsh. But an f in Welsh is pronounced as v, so brefi is really brevi and brafis is effectively bravis. So, perhaps, the original name might have been Dwrycoedbrafis (meaning “nice water in the wood”). The Romans - always struggling with a strange language but trying to stay close to any original name if possible - called it Durocobrivis. This isn’t too far away! And, at least, it’s a possibility! There have also been many other suggestions but the truth is: nobody really knows - nor can they ever be sure. Another interpretation - which gives a very different translation - is that Dwr should be Drws (pronounced “droos” and meaning “door” or “entrance”); and that brefi should be bryf (pronounced “breave” and meaning “prey animal”). So Durocobrivis becomes Drws-y-coedbryf and translates to “entrance to a wood with prey animals”. Totally different - but nothing to do with water. But if this questionable solution were not enough, another huge spanner has been thrown into the works over the meaning of the next staging post along Via Vitellina, namely Magiovinium (at Fenny Stratford). The meaning of Fenny Stratford (“street crossing over water”) and its position as a crossing over the river Ouzel - ie a bridge (or a ford) - doesn’t really match the Roman name, since Magio means “big” or “great” and Vinium means “market”. So we have the suggestion that there was a big market in Roman times where Fenny Stratford is now. But this isn’t borne out either by history or by archaeology. However, it could describe what Durocobrivis was all about because it’s known that the original Roman staging post grew with time into quite a thriving little town with an important market. So does this mean that someone, a long time ago, dropped a colossal clanger and got the two names mixed up such that Dunstable should have been Magiovinium and Fenny Statford should have been Durocobrivis? Shall we ever know the truth? I doubt it - the names are much too established for them to be changed now.

Totternhoe Villa And what was Durocobrivis like as a little town? I remember, years ago, wondering if it were anything grand like Verulanium (St Albans) and asked someone. His answer was “sheds and shacks, dear boy - sheds and shacks”. A quote found later said “It was a town, not of elegant apartments and togas, but of simple accommodation and hob nailed boots”. So - nothing grand here! Its original purpose was that it was built for an army on the move. It provided food and tented accommodation, repair facilities for equipment, medical and vet facilities and, later, a small trading centre for local villagers, a market for everyday commodities, and places for “entertainment” (bars and brothels). The Mansio was its most important civic building and stood roughly where the Priory Church stands today. But as the years passed, Durocobrivis grew increasingly prosperous and important. It became a principal trading centre for Romans, for Romans and the locals, and for the local villages in the vicinity. There was, however, somewhere pretty grand in the area. It was the home of a very important someone who lived in an impressive villa 2 miles

away at Totternhoe (in the field opposite the church). The house was 220ft X 200ft, built in the “courtyard” style and had all the latest “mod cons” (sewerage, heating, running water), accommodation for servants and was, clearly, the residence of some well appointed and wealthy local official. But who, and what was he? Was he the local overseer of Durocobrivis? Or was he a governmental area official? Was he a genuine Roman or was he an example of a RomanoBritish local boy made good? The villa is dated 4th century, ie well into the Roman occupation of Britain. By this time, the initial battles and conflicts between Romans and British were largely a thing of the past and the Romano-British were well established in the seats of government, learning, the military, the judiciary, and various other positions of authority. But this cosy fraternity was hard won and in the beginning of Roman rule in Britannia, a certain British lady - the Queen of the Iceni tribe - had caused a monumental panic. Read on!

the Christmas rose. This is a true gem in the winter garden. Its delicate blossoms defy the frost, providing soft hues of pink, white, and purple. Paired with snowdrops, they create a delightful contrast against the snow.
Winter’s embrace can be a time of profound beauty in the garden. Though many fear its chill, I find solace in the simple elegance it offers. And while to some it may seem like a barren season, in truth it’s actually brimming with opportunities for garden enthusiasts.
Another favourite of mine is witch hazel, which offers fragrant, spider-like blooms that ignite the cold landscape with shades of yellow, orange, and red. The lovely fragrance is an unexpected treat on a crisp winter’s day.
Speaking personally, it’s also that time of the year when some of my most cherished varieties appear and thrive against what is a rather plainer canvas than we are perhaps used to. One of the first plants that springs to mind is the hellebore, otherwise known as
Then there’s winter jasmine, with its bright yellow flowers, supplying a ray of sunshine on even the gloomiest of days. Trained against a wall, it creates a tapestry of hope. As far as winter shrubs and trees, these sturdy sentinels provide structure and drama to the winter landscape, so it’s definitely worth investing in some, with the fiery stems of something like the dogwood acting like brush strokes against the winter canvas. Whether red, orange or yellow, they shine luminously, especially when backlit by the low winter sun. Next, with its holly-like foliage and clusters of bright yellow flowers, mahonia adds texture and fragrance. A beacon for pollinators, it proves that gardens can be ecological havens even in winter.

I also adore the evergreen shrub skimmia, which produces attractive red berries and fragrant white flowers in winter. Its resilience makes it a great addition for winter interest. Hopefully these resilient, beautiful growers have given you an idea of what nature can still provide, even in the very coldest of conditions. My advice is to look on winter gardens as embracing the cold, rather than surrendering to it. The flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees are celebrating life in their unique way, shining with a grace and beauty all of their own.

Big Sky Landscape in Charcoal Use an A5 piece of cartridge paper (landscape). Get a piece of compressed charcoal and rub it onto a piece of tissue. In circular motions rub the tissue paper all over the paper to create a light grey background that gets lighter at the bottom. Create the horizon line at the bottom with a ruler and charcoal stick. Use the padded part of your finger to blur the horizon line. Use a good clean rubber to create white clouds by rubbing out the background and blur the edges with your finger. Use directional mark making. Add more charcoal directly onto the background to get darker clouds and rub with your finger to blend. Now rub out above and below the horizon line to get lighter tones. Draw your trees, buildings, and land in charcoal. Leave white areas below the horizon line to suggest water. Why not buy a day workshop as a Xmas gift token for friends or family? Looking Up! Bedfordshire’s Night Sky October & November 2023 See the 28 October Partial Lunar Eclipse: On the evening of Saturday 28th October a small chunk of the Full Hunter’s Moon plunges into darkness as a partial lunar eclipse unfolds in the sky above Bedfordshire. The visual spectacle begins in earnest at about 8:35pm with Earth’s umbral shadow creeping up on to the underside of the moon. Over the following 40 minutes watch as the moon’s surface at its lower edge grows ever darker in Earth’s shadow. Time of greatest eclipse for Bedfordshire is at approximately 9:15pm, after which the shadow begins to recede, eventually sliding off the lower right of the moon at just before 9:55pm. The bright object to the lower left of the moon that night is Jupiter.
Catch Jupiter at its Closest to Earth for 2023: Just a few days after the lunar eclipse Jupiter reaches opposition on the night of 2nd - 3rd November. This is when Earth and Jupiter are closest together for the year, that distance still being a whopping 595 million kilometres. At opposition Jupiter appears at its brightest in the sky for the year, and also at its biggest apparent size in binoculars and telescopes.
