Greetings from Christ Church Dunstable!

Come T hou Long-expected Adverts A much-loved new Christmas tradition that has sprung up over the last few years is to watch the new Christmas adverts from major brands across the retail world. Whether this is Kevin the carrot from Aldi or the aesthetic beauty of the John Lewis adverts, although the giant Venus Flytrap may have changed that for some! One of 2023 adverts that has caused the biggest stir has been the M&S advert. It’s a very interesting advert as celebrities like Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Zawe Ashton give in to temptation and burn the Christmas cards and shred the Christmas crackers and hats, all while a cover of Meat Loaf’s song ‘I will do anything for love’ plays over the chaos. The closing message is ‘Love Thismas, not Thatmas’. Essentially, make Christmas whatever you want it to be. Naturally, this has garnered some reaction from those who didn’t like the message of the advert. As I considered the push back, it got me thinking about the whole scene in relation to the Christmas message of the Bible. If I took the things seen in the M&S advert, and torched them or threw them into the chipper, I wouldn’t actually have removed anything of what the TRUE Christmas is all about. Indeed, in some way to peel back a lot of the distraction of a modern Christmas to view the beauty of the Christmas story as it should be isn’t a bad thing. While we will never know what it was that Meat Loaf wouldn’t do for love, in the Christmas story we can see exactly the lengths that the God of the entire universe would go to out of love for his creation; that includes us. The Bible tells us in John 3:16,

“For God so loved the world that he sent his one and only son…” and we see this amazing act of love in detail written down by another Bible writer, Paul, who says in a letter to his friends in Philippi,

“have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death - even death on a cross!” The message of Christmas is that God, looking down and seeing our pain, our weakness, our need for a Saviour to repair the relationship between us and him - relationship that is broken because of our rejection of Him - decides to step out of the throne room of heaven and descends to live among us. Not in a palace where you might expect a King to live, but into a normal working-class family from a small village in Galilee. In love Jesus came down at Christmas so he might live like one of us. And in love Jesus went to the cross at Easter to bear the burden of guilt for all the wrongdoing and mistakes that leave us eternally separated us from our loving creator. The greatest gift ever is the gift of forgiveness and everlasting life which is now available to all who would come to Jesus in faith. This is the Thismas that Christians celebrate. Paper hats and tinsel is lovely but it’s the Thatmas that isn’t necessary. What is essential is that we are made right with God, through what Jesus has done. My favourite celebrity appearance in this year’s Christmas adverts is that of Rick Astley in the Sainsburys ad. And like in his most famous song, the eternal promise of Jesus at Christmas and Easter is that God is never going to give us up, and God will never let us down. Merry Christmas from your friends at Christ Church Dunstable.

Be Yourself, Be Amazing at PQA Luton The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts is delighted to bring PQA to Luton this Autumn. PQA Luton is a weekend performing arts academy based at Chiltern Academy, offering a range of fun and exciting classes every Saturday for children and young adults aged between 4-18 years old. PQA was founded by Pauline Quirke, with one main aim in mind: “When we opened our first Academy in 2007, our simple mission was to provide the very best in performing arts education. We’ve grown since then, but our mission hasn’t changed. By working with people who we believe to be outstanding in their field, we aim to bring the widest, most exciting experiences to our students in an environment that is both friendly and rewarding.”

Fun and creative classes Headed up Principal Jo Ambrose, PQA Luton offers a whole range of opportunities in theatre, music, dance and film making, through which young people can develop and grow. The performing arts is a wide and vibrant industry and students will learn important skills and make new friends every week through three core modules in Comedy & Drama, Film & Television and Musical Theatre. As Jo explains, “I’m so excited to bring my skills and experience in film and education to PQA Luton, to ensure the best earning environment for the next generation of young actors and filmmakers. Our fantastic team of teachers and assistants are dedicated to inspiring, engaging and motivating each one of our students. Whether they wish to gain confidence, make new friends, or pursue a career in the performing arts, we’re here to make it possible in three magical hours every week.”

Amazing opportunities await As well as many in-house productions and showcases, we offer amazing opportunities through which our PQA students can celebrate their hard work and incredible achievements. We give them the chance to see their own short film on the big screen at the cinema, where they get to walk down the red-carpet just like the Hollywood stars. Some films go on to be selected for a star-studded screening at the PQA Film Festivals. Another highlight is the chance to take part in a PQA West End performance. PQA Luton will join other academies from around the UK to come together and create a spectacular show at Her Majesty’s Theatre – the home of Phantom of the Opera. It’s truly amazing to see our students experience the thrill and buzz of taking to the stage in such a fantastic venue.

Join us for a free taster session We’d love to welcome your children along to see what they can achieve at PQA Luton this Autumn. We believe that the performing arts can have a huge, positive impact on the lives of young people. Through our ethos of ‘Be Yourself, Be Amazing’ our students have the confidence to put themselves out there, the creativity to think differently and the community to feel supported whilst doing so. Why not book a free taster today to come and experience the magic yourself?

PQA Luton takes place every Saturday at Chiltern Academy, Gypsy Lane, Luton, LU1 3JH. To find out more and sign up, visit: www.pqacademy.com/academies/luton/ or contact Principal Jo on 07868385893 or at jo.ambrose@pqacademy.com

The story of Boudicca (also called Boadicea) Before the Roman invasion in AD 43, the Celtic tribes had spread all over what is now Britain and jealously occupied (and defended) their own tribal areas. The Iceni occupied the area roughly recognised today as Norfolk - and the powerful Catuvellauni (whose capital was at Verlamion near present day Wheathampsted) occupied what are now Beds, Bucks, Cambs, Herts, and parts of Northants and Oxon - much acquired by conflict and warfare. In general, the Celts followed a pastoral, agricultural lifestyle and lived in simple houses in villages. But following the invasion, their peace was shattered. The Romans were harsh rulers and it was a case of submit or be severely punished. Most of the tribes realised they couldn’t win so agreed to toe the line - in other words they accepted the mantra “if you can’t beat them, join them”. The tribal chiefs agreed to keep their people under control and were given special priviledges as a reward. The tribe was then left alone to continue their lifestyle as before. But even so, there was still the occasional flare up here and there. In particular, the Druids (priests) were always a potential source of revolt since they had considerable influence over the majority of the population. Boudicca’s Rebellion Early in the Roman occupation, circa AD 60, there was serious trouble between the Romans and the Iceni. The Iceni King Prasutagus had earlier entered into an agreement with the Romans whereby the tribe behaved themselves, paid their dues, and were left alone. All was well until Prasutagus died and left his kingdom to be shared, as was the Celtic custom, between his queen, Boudicca, and their two daughters. He also tried to placate the Romans by leaving something of value to the Emperor Nero. But female inheritance was not recognised by the Romans. They demanded all the Iceni possessions whereby

14 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

Boudica objected, and for her rebellion, she was publicly flogged and her two 12 year old daughters were raped and tortured. The Romans felt that this would teach the Iceni (and others) a lesson so that there would be no further trouble. Unsurprisingly, the event left Boudicca seething with hatred and a desire for revenge. Immediately afterwards, in AD 61, the Druids in Mona (Anglesey) revolted, and the Romans felt they must quell this uprising or else there could be further insurrection. A large army was despatched north, under Caius Seutonius Paullinus, with the intention of sorting them out once and for all. But it meqant that he left only skeletal defences behind. This was Boudicca’s big chance and she joined forces with the neighbouring Trinovantes (of Suffolk) and marched on Camulodunum (the Roman capital, now Colchester) and razed it to the ground, killing anyone or anything remotely Roman and burning everything remaining. Terrible atrocities were committed, ie Boudicca was just as bad as the Romans when it came to brutality. An ash band in Colchester testifies to the city’s burning.

Snippets By Paul Heley The description of Boudicca given by Dio Cassius (a Roman historian) reads:“She was huge of frame, terrifying of aspect and with a harsh voice. A great mass of bright red hair fell to her knees and she wore a great twisted golden neclace and a tunic of many colours over which was a thick mantle fastened by a brooch. When she grasped a spear, she struck fear in all who watched her” Success bred success and she continued with an ever growing army and sacked and burnt Londinium (leaving an ash band) and then moved onto the Via Vitellina and sacked and burnt Verulamium (St Albans, and leaving yet another ash band). But when Paullinus heard of these sackings, he decided the Druids could wait for the moment. He turned round and retraced his steps south along the Via Vitellina collecting reinforcments en route. He eventually met Boudicca and her thousands of followers somewhere along the Watling Street - but exactly where is not known. There is no actual record of the battle or of how many were on either side - although it is strongly suggested that the British far outnumbered the Romans by something like 20:1. Not only were there thousands of Iceni fighting men (and many others from different tribes), there were also families of women and children crammed into cumbersome ox carts concentrated behind Boudicca and her army. They had come along to witness the battle and to enjoy the expected victory over the hated Romans. But although totally outnumbered, the Romans were better trained, better disciplined, better equipped and Paullinus was a master tactician who had chosen his spot very carefully. The Roman historian, Tacitus, has described the topography of the battlefield thus:“He (Paullinus) selected a position in a defile closed in behind by a wood; and having made sure that there was no enemy other than that in front (where there was open, flat ground unsuitable for ambushes), he drew up his legions in close order on the flanks while the cavalry was massed at the extremities of the wings” Unfortunately, this topographic description is rather vague but suggests a fairly narrow valley, blocked at one end and with hills either side opening out onto flat ground. Further descriptions

16 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

suggest that the Romans occupied the high ground and the valley sides and that they forced the British into the valley opening for hand to hand fighting. However, and tragically, the Celtic long sword, in the narrow confine and with the two armies literally shoulder to shoulder, proved unwieldy - and was no match for the short Roman stabbing sword. As the Britons were gradually forced back, so they were hampered by their families in the ox carts thereby preventing an orderly retreat. Consequently there was mass slaughter of men, women and children and tens of thousands of Britons were killed compared with comparitively few Romans. It was a complete massacre. It is further suggested that Boudicca and her daughters, rather than face capture, committed suicide by taking poison. It was another example of massive dreams coming to naught. Question : But where is the location for this final battle? Answer : Nobody knows for certain - the topographic description by Tacitus could satisfy a number of places. However, the general opinion is that the battleground must lie somewhere either on or very close to the Watling Street and not too far north. There are three main contenders :1) Venonis (ie High Cross at the junction of Watling Street with Fosse Way south of Hinckley - a suitable spot for Roman reinforcements from Lindum (Lincoln), for example?) 2) Mancetter just to the north by Atherstone 3) Cuttle Mill (two miles south of Towcester by Paulerspury - where the topography certainly fits) But nowhere has there been found any evidence of such a huge battle - no skeletons, no bones, no weapons. But some form of “negative evidence” in favour of Cuttle Mill is that Lactodorum (Towcester) was an important garrison but there is no evidence of its having been attacked - and there is no ash band. So perhaps the battle took place south of Lactodorum, ie before Boudicca could get there????? 4) Rather impertinently - and using similar negative evidence - is that the Dunstable MAS suggests a topographically suitable spot (which I believe to be highly debatable!) around Caddington turn south of Durocobrivis (Dunstable), ie between Verulamium (ash band) and Durocobrivis (no ash band). Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice!!

WIN TICKETS! TV favourite Ed Byrne brings his 'Best Reviewed Show at The Fringe' to Dunstable Grove Theatre on 14th February and we’ve got tickets to give away!

Is there no end to the man’s talents? A staple of revered panel show Mock the Week, Ed Byrne has also sledded down the side of a volcano for Dara and Ed’s Great Big Adventure, demonstrated his driving skills on Top Gear and proven himself to be quiz show dynamite on the likes of The Chase, The Hit List, Pointless and All-Star Family Fortunes. But for all his dalliances with the world of television light entertainment, Ed remains at heart one of the world’s truly great stand-up comedians. However, while he prepares to take his 14th show, Tragedy Plus Time, which was named ‘Best Reviewed Show’ at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, on a comprehensive UK tour, audiences need to ready themselves because Ed Byrne is heading into highly emotional new territory. We caught up with Ed to find out what we can expect...

and what’s really annoying is that the one person I would have asked for advice on that is the guy the show’s about. It’s like when you get dumped by someone and you’re heartbroken. The one person you’d usually want to talk to about it is the very person who dumped you. “I’ve spoken to people who worked with Paul, who was a comedy director, and they’ve said that his thing was, ‘you can be as emotional as you like and as serious as you like, but there has to be a joke’. So the idea of saying something purely for the emotional gut punch was off the table.”

“It’s something of a departure, and I’m slightly worried about that,”. “I’ve never really had the desire to write a show that had an overly serious element to it. I got a lot of five-star reviews on the last show [2019’s If I’m Honest], but some four-star ones that opined, ‘well it’s funny, but that’s all it is…’ As if that’s not enough these days. Frankly, just being funny is a furrow I’ve been happy to occupy. But this new show features some heart-wrenching, soul-bearing stuff.”

“Obviously I don’t want the whole thing to be an onslaught,” he says. “I said to the audience in one of the early previews, ‘yes, it is sad. But don’t worry because the show is funny. Because believe it or not, I’m actually quite good at this.’”

That much is indisputable. For Tragedy Plus Time, Ed bravely ventures into the world of grief and loss, a decision prompted by the passing of his younger brother Paul, aged just 44, in February 2022. Comedy that takes death as its cue is not unprecedented, but it’s a path that takes considerable creative courage to explore.

The genius of the show is that it takes the most difficult of subject matter and encourages the audience to laugh in its face in a way they would otherwise simply never do.

A Very Homemade Christmas

What better way to celebrate Christmas than by getting together with your friends and family to make handmade decorations? Not only is this an activity that will create lasting memories, but it will also give your home a unique look that cannot be bought in the shops. As the festive season approaches, many of us are looking for ways to bring the magic of Christmas into our homes. While shop-bought decorations can be beautiful, there’s something incredibly special about handmade additions that infuse a home with warmth and personality. DIY wreaths An iconic symbol of Christmas which sets a festive tone even before guests step inside. Begin with Fir tree branches, then add pinecones and ribbons for a touch of elegance. Integrate small ornaments or baubles that resonate with your personal style or theme. Use a wire frame as your foundation to provide both structure and ensure durability, then decide on its pride of place. Handcrafted ornaments Utilise versatile materials like malleable clay, rustic pieces of light bulb or repurposed light bulbs. Embellish with vivid paints, sparkling glitter or intricate decoupage patterns. Beyond just decoration, this crafting journey is a delightful bonding experience,

especially engaging for young children, making the end result truly special.

Upcycled decorations Embrace sustainability by giving old materials a second life. Those cherished sweaters, worn from years of use, can find a new purpose as snug pillow covers, adding a touch of nostalgia to your decor. Leftover wine corks can metamorphose into charming mini reindeer or whimsical Christmas trees.

Christmas scent Simmer a pot filled with water, rich cinnamon sticks, zesty orange slices, aromatic cloves and fresh pine needles, to envelop your home in a mesmerising olfactory experience. This natural concoction beautifully brings warmth and nostalgia to every corner.

Handmade stockings Craft personalised stockings for each family member. Whether hand-sewn using soft felt, hand-knitted using cosy yarn or simply reusing an old sock, the real magic comes when you add your own adornment. Embroidered names, shimmering sequins or other delightful embellishments create not just a decoration, but a keepsake filled that can be used again, year after year.

Homemade advent calendar Use small bags, quaint boxes or vintage envelopes as your daily vessels. Inside, tuck away delightful treats, heart-warming notes or tiny sentimental

patches, envision designs that resonate with the holiday spirit. From delicate snowflakes drizzling down to playful reindeer prancing about or the cheerful countenance of Santa Claus, these revamped pillows can instantly infuse any room with Christmas cheer. DIY snow globes Mason jars can be the canvas for your festive creativity. Simply fill them with water, a teaspoon of glycerine, glitter and miniature Christmas figurines before securing the lid tightly. When shaken, this handcrafted treasure unveils a swirling snowstorm and captivating Christmas scene.

Centrepieces and table decor Merge the soft glow of candles with the vibrant hue of cranberries and the rustic charm of pine branches. Enhance the ambiance further by folding napkins into festive motifs, and weaving ribbons and pinecones into your table settings, creating an enchanting table that’s both aesthetic and memorable. Festive throw pillows Breathe life into ordinary pillows, making them festive masterpieces. With the magic of fabric paint or the convenience of iron-on

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about why horrendous setbacks can ultimately become a blessing. As someone who’s spent a lifetime championing good design, I’m thrilled to see how the next wave of creativity is taking shape. The second half of this decade promises to be an exciting period, where we’ll witness a confluence of sustainability, eco-consciousness and a deepseated nostalgia for the old ways. The pendulum swings back and forth in design, but in the 2020s, it seems it might just rest at a harmonious middle ground for a while. The desire for sustainable design isn’t new, but as we forge deeper into the decade, it will be less of a trend and more of a necessity. In fact, I predict that we’ll see a greater integration of locally sourced materials. People will prize craftsmanship and durability over disposable fast furniture.

ever. There’s a sense of comfort and reassurance in what we already know. In response, we’ll likely see a resurgence of traditional craftsmanship, from skilled stonemasonry to intricate wood carving, bestowing rooms with a sense of permanence and history.

As part of this sustainable approach, designers will look to implement renewable resources, such as bamboo, hemp and recycled metals. Forget flatpack furniture – welcome back, hand-crafted chairs and family heirloom tables!

The shift back to classic styles will also manifest in the colour palette we choose for our interiors. Instead of stark whites and minimalistic hues, expect to see a resurgence of warm, earthy tones like sage greens, terracotta reds and sun-baked yellows.

In parallel with sustainability, eco-conscious choices will steer interior palettes and layouts. Indoor plants have already been gaining ground, but I predict the integration of more ‘living’ elements – like vertical gardens or even aquatic features.

These colours don’t just add visual appeal; they have a profound impact on our psychological well-being. They evoke a sense of comfort, warmth and stability, resonating with our innate desire for environments that feel like a sanctuary.

As the world grows more unpredictable, the allure of familiar, classic design styles is stronger than

Adaptive and flexible spaces will be key in future design, especially as homes continue to serve multiple functions like work, education and leisure. Prompted by recent global events, this multifunctionality isn’t a fleeting trend but a lasting shift. As we embrace sustainable practices, ecoconscious living and time-tested styles, we will create homes that are not just spaces to live in but sanctuaries that echo the principles we hold dear. The future looks not just stylish but also incredibly sensible.

Food For Thought

How does your household expenditure on groceries compare to the average UK household? The reality There’s no sugar-coating the truth, our household expenses have gone up significantly in recent years. This has created more food banks, countless initiatives to help families make their money go further and an awful lot of anxiety. The stats According to data from the Office of National Statistics, the average UK household now spends around £4,124 on groceries and £1,220 on food at restaurants and takeaways every year. As a result, British households spend 16% of their budgets on food and non-alcoholic drinks. Another 3% of budgets goes to alcohol.

are some simple tips which can help you spend less without sacrificing on quality or taste: 1. Plan your meals Start by creating a weekly or monthly meal plan. Make a list of the ingredients you need and stick to it when you go shopping. 2. Shop smart Look for sales, discounts, and vouchers when you shop for groceries and consider signing up for supermarket loyalty programmes. 3. Buy in bulk Purchase non-perishable items like rice, pasta, canned goods, and frozen vegetables in bulk.

The average weekly food cost – meaning food and non-alcoholic beverages - for the typical UK household is around £103, up around 18% from a year ago. Unsurprisingly, this varies from region to region. London and the South East spend around 10% more than the rest of the UK. Households in Northern Ireland spend the most: 13% more than average.

4. Seasonal and local produce Buy fruits and vegetables that are in season and grown locally. They are often fresher and less expensive than imported or out-of-season produce.

The lowest food bills are enjoyed by those in the North East (13% less than average) and Yorkshire (10% less than average).

6. Limit convenience foods Pre-packaged and convenience foods are convenient but expensive. Minimise their consumption and opt for homemade alternatives.

The typical weekly grocery expenditure in the UK stands at £35 per individual. When you factor in an additional £10 spent on dining out or ordering takeout, the average weekly food cost for one person totals £45. The option of cutting back Regardless of whether you find yourself above or below these averages, if you’re feeling the pinch, you’re probably looking at way to cut back. Here

24 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

5. Cook at home Eating out or ordering takeout can quickly drain your budget.

7. Reduce meat consumption Meat is typically one of the more expensive components of a meal. Consider incorporating more plant-based proteins like beans, lentils, and tofu into your diet. 8. Avoid impulse buys Stick to your shopping list and avoid impulse purchases.

Ingredients

Spiced Festive Biscuits Introduction

Rustle up a little festive cheer with these delectable and delicately spiced biscuits, ideal for hanging on your tree or just for brightening up your tea break.

Top Tips

• Turn your biscuits into tree decorations by making a hole into each one before baking, using a skewer then thread through ribbon once cooled. • This dough can be made ahead by placing in the freezer after having been wrapped in cling film to chill. Simply defrost and roll out to bake. • Pre-made icing or chocolate that is ready-to-melt in a tube is a great option for those who feel less confident using a piping bag.

Method

1. Gently warm the butter, sugar and golden syrup over a low heat until it has melted. Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl making a well in the centre to pour the wet

ingredients into. Mix until a workable dough forms. Once cooled, wrap the dough in cling film and place in the fridge for at least one hour to chill. 2. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas mark 5 and line two baking sheets with baking paper. Meanwhile, roll out the biscuit dough onto a lightly floured surface to around ½cm thick and cut out your biscuits using festive shapes of choice. Reroll leftover dough and cut until you have none left. Bake for 10-12 minutes until a golden brown.

For the biscuits 350g plain flour – plus extra for rolling 200g butter 175g dark brown sugar 1tbsp golden syrup 1tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 large egg ½tsp ground cinnamon ½tsp ground nutmeg ½tsp ground ginger For the decoration 100g white chocolate (melted) OR 100g icing sugar Sprinkles or silver baubles

3. Once cooled, preferably on wire racks, place either melted chocolate or icing sugar – that has been mixed with water to form a thick paste – into a piping bag and use to decorate the biscuits, adding baubles and other decorations while the icing is still wet. Let dry completely before hanging.

Top Tip

Decorated biscuits will last several days on a tree or up to a week in an airtight container.

Festive Foliage Whether you are an avid gardener or just someone who loves to embrace the spirit of Christmas, adding a few festive plants to your home can really elevate the festive mood. The festive season is all about lights, décor, joy and of course, warmth. While twinkling lights and decorative ornaments often steal the show, here are some alternatives to the familiar poinsettia this festive season. Christmas cactus It stands out distinctly from its desert relatives, offering a fresh and vibrant appeal tailored for indoor settings. Originating from the rainforests, this plant is well-suited for home interiors, shunning the typical arid conditions its name might suggest. As December draws near, the Christmas cactus unveils its captivating beauty, bursting into an array of splendid blooms. The cascading flowers, with their diverse palette of pinks, reds and pristine whites, stand in stark contrast to its dark green segmented stems. Amaryllis The amaryllis, a distinguished bulbous plant, stands tall with its slender stems that proudly bear large, eye-catching blooms. As Christmas nears,

the red amaryllis becomes a favourite, encapsulating the holiday’s vibrant spirit. However, its beauty doesn’t end there.

petite ornaments and weaving strands of twinkling lights. It’s a testament that festive grandeur can also come in smaller packages.

This versatile plant offers a delightful spectrum, from pristine whites and soft pinks to fiery oranges. With attentive nurturing and care, these bulbs can be coaxed into a recurring spectacle, gracing homes with their radiant blossoms annually.

Rosemary Often, when we think of festive decor, herbs might not immediately come to mind. Yet, rosemary, with its fragrant needles and potential for artful shaping, begs to differ. Many have adopted the practice of trimming rosemary into a conical silhouette, mirroring the iconic Christmas tree.

Norfolk Island Pine For those contending with limited space or perhaps living in smaller urban abodes, the prospect of housing a grand Christmas tree can seem daunting. Enter the Norfolk Island Pine, a perfect solution for such settings. While compact in stature, this delightful houseplant embodies the quintessential charm of its larger counterparts. Resembling a mini Christmas tree, its delicate branches prove ideal for draping with

28 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

Beyond mere aesthetics, this aromatic herb doubles in utility. Its pleasant scent enhances the festive ambiance, while its flavourful leaves stand ready

to elevate your Christmas culinary creations, marrying decoration with delightful gastronomy. Mistletoe and holly Mistletoe and holly, with their verdant leaves and vibrant berries, have etched their presence into the tradition of Christmas. Their historical and cultural significance transcends generations, evoking nostalgia and festive cheer. When you see mistletoe and holly, you know it can’t be any other time of year. Though caution is advised – especially given mistletoe’s potentially harmful berries – judicious use of these plants can be both safe and decorative. Even a simple, strategically-placed sprig can transform a space, infusing it with the joy of the season – and possibly even, a longed-for kiss!

Such flexibility ensures that whether you’re aiming for a muted, classic elegance or a bolder festive statement, cyclamen can seamlessly fit the bill. Caring for your Christmas plants Most Christmas plants prefer bright, indirect light. Keep them away from drafts, be it an open window or a heating system and water them as per their needs. Christmas plants not only add aesthetic appeal to your home but also bring in a slice of nature. By choosing the right plants and taking proper care of them, you can ensure that the joy they bring lasts long beyond the Christmas holidays.

Cyclamen Often celebrated for its understated elegance, the cyclamen effortlessly graces spaces with its intricate heart-shaped leaves and uniquely poised, upswept petals. A testament to nature’s artistry, its bloom palette sweeps from the purest of whites to the richest, velvety reds.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column

He’s a magnificent broadcaster, gifted gardener, brilliant author and all-round horticultural visionary. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about how to make sure you look after your health before you look after your garden.

The only noises you hear in the garden should be those of nature and the sounds of the garden tools

you’re using. The bending, kneeling and navigating through your precious flower beds and vegetable

patches present challenges – chiefly to your back and joints and if they’re clicking and you’re audibly saying “Ouch,” something is wrong. Unseen dangers – heart issues, strokes and even dementia – can keep us from our tranquil green sanctuaries, leaving them to overgrow and us in a disheartening catch-22 situation. I like to get fit to garden, and not just garden to get fit. A robust core helps you bend and lift without putting too much strain on your back. Try yoga or Pilates classes to develop these crucial muscles. As for those pesky calories, three hours of active gardening burns as much as an hour at the gym. Consider the therapeutic benefits of brewing a warming tea. Herbal

infusions such as lemon verbena and chamomile aren’t just delicious; they come packed with health advantages, such as soothing the nerves and promoting good digestion. Remember, the garden will only give what you can put into it, making your health the most vital seed you can sow.

Stepping In To The New Year You don’t need to hit the reset button on your fitness New Year resolutions if you maintain a balance throughout December. One refreshingly simple way to strike this equilibrium? Incorporate a daily walk into your routine. The festive allure of Christmas often brings with it the warmth of gatherings, indulgent feasts and the joyous spirit of the season. While the holiday magic envelops us, our health-conscious routines can sometimes take a back seat. Committing to a brisk 30-minute walk daily might seem humble, but its rewards are bountiful. Whether you’re braving the winter chill or soaking up some morning sunlight, this regimen can gift-wrap numerous health benefits for you. The benefits: Combatting the festive calories As the festive season rolls in, the pull of decadent Christmas puddings is undeniable. Yet, there’s good news for those with a sweet tooth: indulge in your

favourite festive treats without guilt, knowing that a brisk stroll can effectively balance those extra holiday calories. Heartfelt benefits A regular walking routine greatly enhances heart health. By consistently engaging in this simple exercise, you can not only strengthen the cardiovascular system but also significantly reduce the risk of serious conditions, including heart disease and strokes. Disease prevention Incorporating a daily walk into your routine serves as a protective barrier against various health challenges. This proactive step notably guards against major threats such as cancer and type 2 diabetes. Boosting immunity As winter unfolds, the risk of colds and flu intensifies. Engaging in regular walking activities strengthens and invigorates your immune system, transforming it into a formidable defence against these seasonal adversaries. Brain and mood boosters The cognitive and emotional rewards of walking are vast and undeniable. Regularly embracing this simple activity acts as a potent remedy:

Total Recall

Do you struggle to retain information? Whether you struggle to recall details from ten minutes or ten years ago, the following technique and tips will help improve your brain’s ability to recall information.

Mindfulness meditation By refining an awareness of our present moment, mindfulness offers a multifaceted approach to wellbeing. Not only does it act as a buffer against the stressors of daily life, but it also provides tangible benefits for memory enhancement and overall cognitive function. Teach someone else Teaching information facilitates a deeper comprehension of the subject. The act of verbalising and explaining concepts, whether to a real or imagined audience, reinforces our grasp on the material, enabling a more profound and lasting understanding of the topic at hand. Stay organised Making a habit of writing down tasks, coupled with the strategic use of organisational tools like calendars or digital apps and the practice of keeping a clutter-free workspace, collectively serve as effective strategies to significantly uplift memory capabilities. Active engagement Rather than simply absorbing information in a passive manner, take a proactive stance in your learning. Engage by asking pertinent questions, initiating discussions on various topics with peers and always strive to delve deeper, aiming for a more comprehensive and enriched understanding of the subject in question.

rests you may find a gradual deterioration in productivity and overall output quality. Physical exercise Engaging in consistent physical activity not only promotes better circulation throughout the entire body but also directs increased blood flow to the brain. This augmented circulation has been linked to improved cognitive capabilities. Sleep and eat well Sleep serves a purpose beyond mere relaxation and is fundamentally crucial for the brain’s process of memory consolidation. For optimal cognitive health and to reap these benefits, you need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. In addition, consuming foods abundant in antioxidants – such as blueberries – coupled with those high in omega-3 fatty acids, notably found in fish, offers numerous benefits. These nutrients are scientifically linked to bolstering brain functionality.

Visualisation techniques Utilising visualisation by forming mental pictures related to the information you wish to retain offers a practical approach. This technique transforms elusive or abstract ideas into more tangible, relatable constructs, thereby simplifying the process of memory retrieval and enhancing recall efficiency. Practice and repetition The method of periodically returning to and practicing specific data or skills, increasing the time between each session – termed as spaced repetition – stands as a premier strategy. This approach has consistently demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in strengthening memory and information retention.

Breaks and downtime – limit your distractions Research highlights the value of short breaks within prolonged tasks. Pauses are proven to sustain a uniform efficacy in performance. Without these

Leaf printing in Acrylic

I can’t resist using leaves this time of year. Collect some nice leaves with a good texture and spine. Dry them out under a heavy book ready for printing. You will need 3 acrylic colours (white, green, yellow) and black paper. Do a test piece first. Cover the textured side of the leaf in white paint and then press it into the paper with your hand, give it an even rub and gently pull off. Let this dry and try another one in white with a bit more water and overlay it slightly. Now do another print. Paint your leaf yellow and then add green on some areas and a bit of white. Print the leaf onto your page and see the colours blend. Play with this process and create a page full of beautiful leaves. If you have gold or silver add that to.

We have 3 full day workshops in 2024 all materials included Sat 27th Jan Urban Sketching workshop £60 Sat 17th Feb Mixed Media & experimental printing workshop £60 Sat 2nd March Exploring acrylics & mark making £60 Our next art course begins Wed 3rd April 2024 email drmooresartcourse@gmail.com or call 078 9661 9660

Looking Up! Bedfordshire’s Night Sky December 2023 & January 2024 See the Northern Lights from Bedfordshire: This winter offers us a rare opportunity to catch the aurora borealis (northern lights) from Bedfordshire. Normally seen from much more northerly latitudes this dazzling atmospheric phenomenon is governed by the flow of high energy particles emitted from our sun in the solar wind. The solar wind goes through roughly an 11-year cycle producing peaks and troughs in activity. At its peak the sun releases vast violent storms of energized particles that can occasionally funnel down Earth’s magnetic fields lines. When they do they enter our atmosphere at the north and south poles, and then push further towards Earth’s lower latitudes. Here they interact with nitrogen and oxygen molecules in our upper atmosphere, creating the coloured glows, beams and waves of light that we see as the northern lights. 2024 marks the latest peak in solar wind activity with the potential for several geomagnetic storms over the next few months, so keep looking northwards!

December and January see two impressive meteor showers burst into life. First up are the Geminids with their peak in activity on the night of 13 – 14 December. Look east after dark to catch upwards of 50 shooting stars an hour. Then be ready for a repeat performance on the night of 3 – 4 January with the Quadrantids. The Mind Rewind

In the words of the eternally youthful Cher, we all occasionally want to ‘turn back time’. Yet while such cosmological feats remain unavailable to us mere mortals, there are things we can do to slow down the ageing process and revitalise our brains.

1. Find purpose It has been proven that those who have purpose in their lives live longer. Injecting your everyday with drive in pursuit of achieving a goal – whether it’s a career objective, a personal development goal, or a commitment to a cause – is a profound and transformative journey that can lead to greater fulfilment, happiness, and a sense of direction. 2. Stay in touch Numerous studies have demonstrated a disturbing connection between social isolation and a myriad of adverse health outcomes. They show individuals who experience social isolation are at an increased risk of various health problems, including higher blood pressure, decreased resistance to infection, accelerated cognitive decline, and higher rates of depression, dementia, heart disease and cancer. So whether its attending a local coffee morning, making a weekly phone call to a faraway family member, or just chatting to your neighbour, social interaction is vital.

3. Expand your horizons Reading more books (or listening to them) is an excellent and easy way to boost our brains. A study conducted by the Yale University School of Public Health has revealed that individuals who engage in regular book reading tend to enjoy a longer lifespan, extending their lives by approximately two years when compared to those who do not read. 4. Get your beauty sleep Sleep is essential for our overall health, and lack of it leads to accelerated ageing of brain cells. Aim for at least six-and-a-half hours and if you’re struggling to hit this consider where the problems lie: perhaps your bedroom is too hot or drinking caffeine too late in the day is making you restless. 5. Take a cold shower Cold water encourages cell regeneration, promoting overall health and a longer life. Furthermore, it enhances blood circulation by alternating between constricting and dilating blood vessels, providing a workout for your heart and bolstering the vitality of your mitochondria - the energy generators within your cells. Consequently, cold water proves to be a remarkable overall health booster. 6. Move more Research conducted at the University of California has revealed that spending 10 hours per day in a seated position accelerates the aging of your cells, effectively advancing your ‘biological age’ by eight years. Conversely, aiming for 10,000 steps a day has been proven to reduce body fat and increase oxygen intake, meaning better heath gets closer with every step you take.
