Dunstable Town Council Bringing The Christmas Magic This December in Dunstable

Christmas lights and Christmas trees are lighting up the town and shops are joining the festive feeling with their Christmas window displays. We have a Christmas window competition for the shops again this year with three overall winners. This December we also have Christmas Magic (11-13 December) - a three day event with a fantastic Christmas market to light up Middle Row and The Square. There will be over 32 stalls selling Christmas treats, hot food and mulled wine. Local crafts and stalls selling Christmas stocking fillers for all ages will be on display in Middle Row and The Square for your Christmas shopping experience. Join us on Friday 11th December from 4pm to 9pm for our first twilight Christmas market. Naughty and nice detector, music, Penguins, igloos, snow and plenty of selfie areas to take that perfect Christmas picture. There will be FREE parking on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th December in Ashton Square car park. Both Christmas markets (operating 10am - 4pm) will have plenty to offer with gifts and food and family

Christmas Magic. Ashton Square express will start at Middle Row, follow the stalls into The Square to watch the Clock tower chime to a magical Christmas experience. With more people staying home, criminals have had to find additional sources of income and, as a result, we have experienced a rise in theft from motor vehicles.

The same is also true of business premises, and we would advise that those not used overnight are also checked and secured, with valuables, including tools and equipment, stored away securely.

We advise never leaving valuables, or Christmas shopping, in your vehicle and keep any other possessions out of sight. Remove your sat nav and its holder, and wipe away any window suction marks, as these could indicate a sat nav is stored in your vehicle

This time of year is expensive for most people and the desire for a cheap deal is attractive; if a deal seems too good to be true, it usually is. If you are offered something that is well below the usual retail price, it could be stolen or counterfeit. Handling stolen or counterfeit goods is illegal, so ensure that you only shop with trusted retailers.

It is advisable not to leave tools or other materials in an unoccupied vehicle, or overnight, as works vehicles such as vans are commonly targeted by criminals Opportunist thieves are often tempted by an empty home on these darker evenings, so make sure your house looks lived in when you’re out. Highwaywomen Part III

Robbery With A Feminine Touch! Highwaywomen, as might be expected, were far less common than their male counterparts but, having said that, they were not unknown - and they could be just as barbaric in their own sweet way. Many women used their sexual charms to rob men, eg Ann Meders who masqueraded as “The German Princess”. She had an insatiable desire for money and the trappings of high society. She adopted highway robbery as a means to an end but was hanged in January 1673 aged 30 years. An unusual case concerns Margaret Matthews, born 1660. Her brother had taught her to shoot and to use a sword and she took to highway robbery when her bullying husband was away. On one occasion, under disguise, she robbed her own husband who turned out to be an abject coward. She eventually died of natural causes having never been caught (which was unusual). But in the main, they operated in conjunction with a male colleague - often as a husband and wife act. For example, Joan Philips had eloped with Edward Bracey in the late 1600s and Joan, being both beautiful and also a “sexual tease”, would lure some silly fellow to a rendezvous on a “promise” of good things to come. But, of course, Edward Bracey was not the promise expected and the fellow would

find himself sorely beaten and relieved of any money or items of value. Joan and Edward were arrested and hanged in the April of 1685. Another husband and wife team was James and Anne Wilson. She was described thus :- “Though but young, she can wheedle most cunningly, lie confoundedly, drink and smoke everlastingly, whore insatiably and brazen all her actions most impudently”. Sounds like the sort of girl to take home and introduce to granny! Her husband was a master of disguise and during the course of many robberies, they would cut the girths and bridles of those robbed and tie the victims to trees to be found and released if lucky - but if not, to die. They were both arrested, tried and executed in 1705. But there are two women whose stories have received considerable notoriety - and also considerable embellishment so that it is difficult to separate truth from myth. Mary Frith was born in London c. 1584 into a poor, but loving, family. However, she was always headstrong, disrespectful of authority, and someone who delighted to

flaunt the accepted manners and behaviour of the time. Because of this, she was known as “The Roaring Girl” and for many years she was a pickpocket who earned the nickname “Moll Cutpurse” because she would cut the purses of her victims without their knowing. She also became known in the London underworld as a fence - but one who would sell the stolen goods back to the original owners!

The end of the year is a traditional time for reflection though we might be forgiven for wanting to put 2020 behind us without the need to re-examine events! But far from wanting to forget it ever happened, there are certain aspects of the last 12 months that bear revisiting and prove that there are more positive things going on in the world than negative ones. The UK’s response to Covid-19 has had an unexpected upside: it has demonstrated that we have an amazing capacity for generosity and community spirit at times of severe crisis. Feel-good stories about neighbours helping neighbours, clapping for the NHS and carers, and the heart-warming campaign of Captain Sir Tom Moore regularly graced the headlines, giving us a sense that all was not lost even as we battened down the hatches for a second time. The nationwide and regional lockdowns placed a huge emphasis on local communities and the need for people to help each other, particularly the elderly and vulnerable. Caring for others has always been part of human nature but the pressures of modern life meant it often got pushed down the priorities list.

Being forced to stay at home means we’ve unilaterally developed a new habit of looking out for oneanother and its one we’re apparently keen to stick with. According to a recent survey 68% of UK adults want to continue helping others even after the current crisis has passed. It seems we’re getting used to being active members of our local communities. We’ve been discovering the joys of shopping locally, nodding at strangers even as we keep our distance on long walks, litter picking in the local park, shopping for elderly neighbours and offering up surplus loo rolls. Even during the pared-down VE celebrations in May many people set up picnic tables in their front gardens and drives, waving to each other and chatting from behind garden gates and privet hedges as they drank tea or quaffed a cocktail or two. Who can forget the images of people

singing on balconies in Italy? Or that over 750,000 people signed up to be an NHS volunteer? Or the hand drawings of rainbows in windows? This renewed sense of togetherness is a boost to our mental health, so its one that we should all work to nurture, not just for now but long into the future. Doing good gives us a rush, making us feel good in return, reducing our own stress and improving our wellbeing. As we head into the new year we should try to remember that despite all the panic and fear that this historic global pandemic has brought, despite the uncertainty and the disruption, this crisis has truly illuminated the best of humanity.We’ve witnessed a revolution of kindnessand communities coming together just when we needed it most. Don’t let it die.

Watch the Jupiter and Saturn Grand Conjunction:

21st December sees a magnificently rare celestial event where Jupiter and Saturn converge on almost the same point of sky, appearing at their closest to each other for nearly 400 years! To see the event you’ll need to be out on a high point in the Chiltern Hills with unobstructed views to your south-west. As darkness falls at about 4:30pm/5pm look low down in that direction for what appears to be a bright misshapen ‘star’. Use binoculars to separate that one ‘star’ into two planets, or a small telescope with a wide-angle lens for a surely breathtaking view!

Rediscover Orion: The constellation of

Orion once again graces our night sky this winter. Only visible for a few months each year, right now is a great time to reacquaint yourself with this magnificent star pattern. Many know the three stars in a line that together make Orion’s Belt. But can you identify his shoulders marked by the stars Betelgeuse and Bellatrix, and his feet by Rigel and Saiph?

Catch Some January Shooting Stars: As it gets dark on Sunday 3rd January look towards your north to see if you can spot any shooting stars from the Quadrantids Meteor Shower. Any streaks of light that you see should appear to come from the direction of the Plough. Expect a rate of maybe 15 - 20 shooting stars per hour early in the evening.

Textured Leaves & Objects

Get some leaves, holly, or any flat objects that can be drawn around. If using leaves dry them out so they are flat. Now create a light watercolour wash on your watercolour paper. I chose autumnal reds and oranges. While your wash is quite wet throw some table salt into the middle of your picture and surrounding area. Leave the paint/salt to dry and then gently rub the salt off so you get texture. Now place leaves or objects onto the paper and draw around them. Paint the background (the negative space) a lot darker than your leaves/objects. You might need a few washes of colour. Then leave the objects as they are or add a small amount of colour wash to them. Your background needs to be painted much darker than the foreground objects. Easy Mulled Wine Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 1 bottle dry red wine 2 (5cm) cinnamon sticks 1 dessertspoon whole cloves 1 dessertspoon whole allspice 1 large piece orange rind 1 large piece lemon rind 2-4 tablespoons demerara sugar

Don't bother with expensive wine, a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference!

Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bring to the boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your mouth as this will be hot!). Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the flavours infuse the wine. Strain your mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve at once, perhaps accompanied by mince pies or just enjoy by the fireside.

Layer the dry ingredients in a one litre jar, following the order above, from top, starting with the salt, baking powder and flour. Press each layer down before adding the next (wipe the inside of the jar after adding the cocoa). The amounts given should exactly fill a one litre jar. Add ribbon to decorate and remember to include a tag with the instructions.

Heat the oven to 180ยบC fan/Gas Mark 5. Line two baking sheets with nonstick baking paper. Sift the plain flour, mix in the bicarbonate of soda and ground ginger. Rub in butter with your fingers until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Then add the brown sugar, golden syrup and beaten egg. Mix with your hand to form a ball. Allow to rest for five minutes while you lightly crush the boiled sweets with the rolling pin. Flour your work surface and the rolling pin, and roll out the dough to the thickness of a pound coin. Using cutters such as Christmas trees, hearts and angels, cut out your biscuits. With a smaller cutter or just with a knife, cut a small round hole in the centre

If you want to hang the biscuits on the Christmas tree, use a straw to make a little hole near the top. Bake for 10-12 mins until golden. Leave to cool and harden on the baking sheets because they will be soft to begin with, and the melted sweets very hot. When cold and solid, thread ribbon through the little holes and tie.

Pour the cream into a saucepan and bring just up to the boil. Chop the chocolate into small pieces and place in a large bowl. Pour over the boiling cream, then stir until the chocolate and cream are well blended and smooth. Cool, then set aside in the fridge until the mixture is solid, about 2 hrs. Scoop out teaspoons of the mixture and roll into small walnut-size balls with your hands. Sprinkle the coconut onto a plate and roll the truffle in the coconut until evenly covered. Will keep in a cool place for 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
