William Clive Fries, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 7th, 2024 at Bampa’s House in Corning, NY. e son of the late Clair and Fannie Fries of Hammondsport, NY. Bill was born May 29th, 1937 at his home in Hammondsport, New York. He graduated from Hammondsport Central School in 1956 and married his high school sweetheart, Linda Carol Oplinger, August 24, 1957.
Bill followed in his father’s footsteps in the early 60’s, working alongside him in e Fries Electric Business; that later became e Fries and Son Electric Business with his second son- Joe ‘Onion’. In October of 1964, faced with the necessity of putting food on the table and providing health care for his family, Bill decided to supplement his income by driving a school bus for Hammondsport Central School. Little did he think that 58 years later he would still be driving a bus for Hammondsport Central School– and along the same route for the rst 38 years.
When asked about driving a bus, there is one day that remains vivid in his memory. “On September 11, 1990, my bus, loaded with kindergarten through 6th graders, became totally engulfed in ames coming down Germania Hill. With the help of the older children, the bus was completely evacuated within seconds and with no injuries. “We were all carrying angels on our shoulders that day.”
Bill was inducted into the HCS Hall of Fame; an honor he is very proud of. He nished driving a bus for HCS and for the Mennonite community in 2021. Bill is also a past recipient of the Steuben County Fire ghter of the year award. Bill was a staple of the Hammondsport community, always driving through town with a smile, sitting at the Crooked Lake Ice Cream Company with his ‘cronies’ and just a kind, grateful, respectful man. He genuinely enjoyed any interaction he had whether with the kids on his bus or the community at large. Hammondsport lost a beautiful man, who had a heart of gold.
Bill is survived by his sister, Bonnie (Ronnie) Schmidl of Penn Yan; his children, William (Barbara) Fries Sr of Hammondsport, Brad (Anthony Mendiola) Fries of San Jose CA, Randy (Debbie) Fries of Kendall, Molly (Sebastian) Leon of Tucson AZ; ve grandchildren, William Fries Jr, Derek (Rose Otano) Baroody, Kalyn (Stephen) Veley, Lindsey Fries, Tyler (Matt Kowalski) Baroody; ve great-grandchildren, Stephen, Laykin, Haligyn, Jayden, Kayden and his companion Jeannie Stanton of Richmond VA.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Fries; his parents, Clair and Fannie Fries; his son, Joe ‘Onion’ Fries; his brother, Ronald Fries; and his sisters, Judy Lewis, Shirley Frize, Nancy Watson, and Sally Strzepek.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 1st, 2024 at the Hammondsport Fire Department, 8521 State Route 54, Hammondsport, NY at 1:00PM. Dennis J. Smith, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2024, in his home in Watkins Glen, NY, with Leslie, his loving wife of 50 years, by his side. Born on December 23, 1953, in Hornell, NY, Dennis lived a life lled with love, happiness, and joy. While raising a family and working, he and his wife also enjoyed raising and showing Shetland Sheepdogs for over 40 years.
Dennis earned his Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Alfred State, and then began his engineering career at Sear Brown in Elmira, NY, where he worked for many years. He then moved to Tetra Tech, Inc in Ithaca, NY where he excelled as a Senior Electrical Engineer and became highly respected for his work on projects spanning multiple continents. His knowledge and skills were sought a er by numerous partners within the eld.
roughout his life, Dennis was an active member of several clubs. He was a member and past president of the Finger Lakes Kennel Club, and Central NY Shetland Sheepdog Club, and a member of the Elmira Kennel Club, and the American Shetland Sheepdog Association. Dennis also served as an area coordinator for the Guiding Eyes for the Blind, and an instructor for the Schuyler County Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Dog Pack. Additionally, Dennis was a past member of the Dundee Flying Club, holding a pilot's license, and where he and his family enjoyed many y-in breakfasts on Memorial and Labor Days.
Dennis was an active family man, and dear friend to many. His charming and joking personality shone through in all interactions, and his big smile and laugh were contagious. His commitment to those he loved was evident, and he cherished his marriage to Leslie. His mischievous eye twinkle will be missed, but will remain in memories.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife Leslie; sons Jeremy Smith (Cheyenne Wells) of Savona, NY and Bradley Smith (Bethany Brown), of Watkins Glen, NY; brother Roger (Joanne) Smith of Apalachin, NY, sister Diane (Robert) Davison of Cocoa Beach, FL, and grandchildren Amanda, Emily, Zoey, Emma, Kimberly, Liam, and Ewan. He is predeceased by parents Dean and Margaret Smith, and brother Duane Smith.
A visitation and memorial service to honor Dennis J. Smith's life will be held on Saturday May 4th, 2024 at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home in Watkins Glen, NY. e visitation will begin at 11:00 AM followed by the memorial service at 1:00 PM.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that a public hearing of the qualified voters of the Prattsburgh Central School District, Steuben and Yates Counties, Prattsburgh, New York will be held in Room 301 in said District on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 6:00PM Eastern DST for the presentation of the budget. Resolved that the Board of Education of the Prattsburgh Central School District is hereby authorized to undertake certain capital improvements consisting of addition to, and construction and reconstruction of the Main School Building and facilities, site and athletic field improvements and the acquisition of certain original furnishings, equipment, and apparatus and other incidental improvements required in connection there with for such construction and school use, all at an estimated maximum aggregate cost of $22,200,000; and to appropriate and expend from the existing capital reserve fund $1,000,000 for such costs, and that the balance of such cost, or so much thereof as may be necessary, shall be raised by the levy of a tax to be collected in annual installments, with such tax to be offset by state aid available therefor; and, in anticipation of such tax, debt obligations of the school district as may be necessary not to exceed $21,200,000 shall be issued.
4. Shall the Board of Education of the Prattsburgh Central School District be authorized to levy taxes annually in the amount of $90,380 on behalf of the Prattsburg Free Library to provide public library service and pay over such funds to the Prattsburg Free Library Board of Trustees?

Such form may include a driver’s license, a non-driver identification card, a utility bill, or a voter registration card. The Director of Music will oversee all musical aspects of the fall theater production of Between the Lines. Responsibilities include casting performers with the directors, teaching music, warmups, rehearsing singers, operating the computerized music tracks, and conducting the cast during performances. The Director of Music will be expected to work with students for three to four rehearsals per week, including weekday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Performance dates are November 22-24, 2024. VOTE FOR BOARD MEMBERS:
Petitions nominating candidates for the office of member of the Board of Education must be filed with the Clerk of the District between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM not later than April 22, 2024. The following vacancy is to be filled:
One five-year term ending June 30, 2024
• Each petition must be addressed to the Clerk of the District, be signed by at least 25 qualified voters of the District, shall state the residence of each signer, and the name and address of the candidate. Vacancies upon the Board shall not be considered separate specific offices. The individuals receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected to the vacancy. The following propositions shall be voted upon at the same time as the vote upon the appropriation of monies for the coming school year and for Board members:
PROPOSITION II – BUSES
Shall the following resolution be adopted to wit: Resolved that the Board of Education of the Bath Central School District is hereby authorized to undertake the acquisition of one (1) wheelchair bus and three (3) 72-passenger school buses, all at the estimated maximum aggregate cost of $748,842, less trade-in value, if any, and that such costs, or so much thereof as may be necessary, shall be raised by the levy of tax to be collected in annual installments; and, in anticipation of such tax, debt obligations of the school district as may be necessary not to exceed $748,842 shall be issued, or the School District may enter into an installment purchase contract if the Board of Education determines that it is in the best interest of the School District to finance the purchase in that method.
ADDITIONAL PROPOSITIONS - Any proposition that is required to be included for vote shall be submitted in writing by means of a petition signed by at least 25 qualified voters, stating the residence of each signer, which proposition shall be filed with the Board of Education not later than 30 days before the date of the election as set forth in this notice unless a greater number of days is required by statute. Any proposition shall be rejected by the Board of Education if the purpose of the proposition is not within the powers of the voters or where the expenditure of monies is required for the proposition, and such proposition fails to include the necessary specific appropriation.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS - AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that applications for early mail and absentee ballots will be obtainable and are returnable no earlier than April 21, 2024 between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday through Friday, except holidays, from the District Clerk. Completed applications for early mail and absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk at least seven (7) days prior to the vote if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, May 14, 2024; or the day before the election, if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter, May 20, 2024. Early mail and absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk no later than 5:00 PM on May 21, 2024
A list of all persons to whom early mail and absentee ballots shall have been issued will be available in the office of the District Clerk from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. prevailing time on each of the five (5) days prior to the day of the election, except weekends, up to the day set for the election. Any qualified voter may challenge the acceptance of the ballot of any person on such list, by making his/her challenge and reasons therefore known to the Inspector of Election before the close of the polls. A challenge against an early mail ballot cannot be based on the reason that the voter should have obtained or applied for an absentee ballot.
The Education Law makes special provisions for absentee voting by “permanently disabled” voters of the District and any questions regarding these rights should be directed to the Clerk of the Board.
The Education Law also makes special provisions for absentee voting for “military” voters of the District. Specifically, the law provides a unique procedure for “military ballots” in school district votes. Whereas early mail and absentee ballot applications and early mail and absentee ballots must be received by the voter by mail or in person, a military voter may elect to receive his/her absentee ballot application and absentee ballot by mail, email or facsimile. The military voter must, however, return his/her original military ballot application and military ballot by mail or in person. The Clerk of the Board shall transmit the military voter’s military ballot in accordance with the military voter’s preferred method of transmission not later than 25 days before the vote, April 26, 2024. The Clerk of the Board must then receive the military voter’s military ballot by mail or in person not later than 5:00 p.m. on the day of the vote.
