Robert D. Aho

BATH, NEW YORK: rRobert D. Aho, A life-long resident of Bath, he was born June 16, 1945, the only child of Fred & Betty Aho, at Spencer Hospital in Meadville, PA. He grew up in Conneautville, PA and Graduated from Conneaut Valley High, class of 1963. He graduated from Lock Haven State College in 1969 with a BS in Secondary Education, Social Studies and graduated from Oswego State Universi ty with a major in Industrial Arts.

Bob married his high school sweetheart, Judith Reppert, in 1967 and they celebrated 55 years in August. He is survived by his wife, Judith, son Eric Hoffman-Aho of Bath, daughter Johanna Joy (Jeremy) Swift of Bath, five wonderful grandchil dren, Broghan (Jon) Marencic of Harrisburg, PA, Erica (Caleb) Alley of the US Air Force in Japan, Gretta Hoffman-Aho, Miriam Hoffman-Aho, and grandson Quentin Hoffman-Aho all of Lewisburg, PA, family friend Tommy Lieb and several special friends, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bob taught at Petersburg High School in Petersburg, PA, Campbell-Savona School and retired after thirty years of teaching in 2002, where he taught Industrial Arts & Photography at Haverling, in Bath, NY. He was class advisor for the Haverling Class of 1980. In his thirty years of teaching, he taught more than 3000 students, most of them went on to careers in the trades skills he taught them. In 1978 he received the NY Industrial Arts Association Teacher of the Year Award. For 28 years, Bob was the Bath School Printer. He left Haverling for three years, in 1990, to set up the Steuben-Allegany's Graphic Arts Program and organized their BOCES Printing Service.

Bob was a Boy Scout Volunteer and had been involved with scouting since the age of 10, until his death. As a child, he was a member of Pack and later Troop 210 in Conneautville, PA. As an adult, he was a Cub Master of Pack 57 in Bath, holding that position for over 25 years. He was a member of the Thunder bird District Committee and served many years as the District Camping Chairman. He chaired the Thunderbirds Raft Regatta for 25 years. As a scout Volunteer, Bob received the District Award in 2007, three Thank You Awards and the Scouting Silver Beaver Award in 2003. He was awarded the William D. Boyce Award in 2013 and the Order of the Arrows Vigil Award in 2014. Bob was a part of the Camp Gorton Family for more than 30 years and was known to scouters as "BobAho." In 2013, Bob received the Camp Gorton Service Award. He trained and supported Camp Gorton's Handicraft Staff for more then 20 years. He taught hundreds of scout's wood working and rocketry. His wood working skills are on display at Camp Gorton, where he built 140 dining hall benches, many pieces of yard furniture and many of the green and yellow signs. Bob also loved to make clocks and many other items for family and friends and has gifted more than 100 clocks to many friends.

For many years, Bob was a Lay Pastor in the United Methodist Church. He served the Manor Hill, Mooresville, Ennisville and Wesley Chapel Churches in Central PA Conference UMC, the Pennelville, Plarmo and Caudgnoy Churches in Northern NY Conference UMC, the Kanona-Wheeler Churches and the Rathbone and Cameron Mills Churches in Central NY Conference UMC. From 1972-1978, Bob was part of the Team that designed and built Bath's Centenary United Methodist Church Building. He was most proud to have been a part of that. After the new church was built, he was Chairman of the Building Committee for 10 years.

Bob & Judy also owned Evergreen Printing, that was located in Bath, from 1990-1997. Besides scouting and working in his woodshop at home, Bob loved to work on his family genealogy and was very proud of the Finnish and English ancestry.

In lieu of flowers, you may make a donations to the Centenary United Methodist Church, Bath, NY or the Boy Scouts of America in Bob's Memory.

Calling hours are being observed on Saturday October 8, 2022 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at the Cente nary United Methodist Church in Bath with his Service to follow at 2:00pm with Rev. LeAnne Zeck Officiating. A luncheon will follow in the Fellowship Hall.

On Sunday, September 18th, 2022, Gayle VanderVeer of Bath, NY, passed away at the age of 66.

Gayle was born on April 28th, 1956, in Wellsville, NY to Allie Mae Grimaldi and Milford York. She graduated from Savona Central School District and received an associate degree from Corning Community College.

On March 5th, 1977, she married Michael VanderVeer and made a home in Bath, NY for 45 years.

She worked at Bradford Central School for many years, where she was known as "Mrs. V."

Gayle enjoyed hunting, shing, and gardening. She is survived by her loving husband, Mike; along with her mother and stepfather, Allie and John Grimaldi; her siblings Anna Divens, Joe (Karen) York, John Grimaldi, and Beth (Bill) Tompkins; as well as her in-laws Je (Ann) VanderVeer, and Mary Beth VanderVeer; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gayle was predeceased by her father, Milford York, and her brother, Jesse York.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Harold R. Donelson

CANISTEO, NEW YORK: Harold R. Donel son, Sr., 87, of Cty. Rte. 31 Milwaukee Rd. passed away Monday morning Sept. 19, 2022 at the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home, where he had resided since March of 2021, surrounded by the comfort and love of his family.

Harold was born January 3, 1935 in the town of Tuscarora to the late Earl L. and Carrie (Straite) Donelson. On December 25, 1953 in Canisteo, he married the former Helen L. Pearl who survives.

Harold had attended Jasper Central School and had worked as the manager of the metal fabrica tion shop at Mercury Aircraft in Hammondsport retiring after 34 years of service. A very devout Christian man, Harold was a member of the Waneta Lake Baptist Chapel where he was a deacon, trustee and usher. He later attended the Adrian Baptist Church where he also was trustee and usher.

In addition to his wife Helen, Harold is survived by a daughter Gloria (Philip) Warren of Dundee, daughter-in-law Mary Donelson of Copperas Cove, TX. 7 Grandchildren, Richard Warren, Carrie (Paul) Hopkins, James Michener, Richard Michener, Stacey Donelson, Shane Putman, and Sarah Putman. 9 Great Grandchil dren, Alexandria, Julia, Alex, Emily, Matthew, Cailyn, Anna, Mason and Calli.

He is also survived by a brother Carl (Shirley) Donelson of Montour Falls and a sister, Patricia Magee of California

He was predeceased by a daughter Caroline Donelson, a son Harold R. Donelson, Jr. grand son Brandon Putman, a brother Earl Donelson, Jr. and a sister Dorothy Quinn.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022 at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo where funeral and committal services will take place immedi ately following calling hours at 3:00 pm. Burial will be in the Gulley Cemetery in the town of Jasper at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in Harold's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

BATH, NY: Richard L. Drain, Sr., 85, of Bath, NY, passed away on Septem ber 10, 2022, with his beloved wife by his side. Dick was born on Decem ber 9, 1936 to Carl and Mildred (Coykendall) Drain. The youngest of five children, he grew up in Livonia, NY. He graduated from Livonia High School in 1954 as an Eagle Scout and in 2003, he was inducted into the Livonia Sports Hall of Fame for his participation in football, basketball, baseball and track. He attended Syracuse University, but his love for music brought his studies to Ithaca College, where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education. Dick and his high school sweetheart, Eleanor Jamison, were married on August 1, 1959. They moved to Bath, NY for his first teaching job where they officially became the “Drains from Bath.” After teaching at the elementary level for a short time, Dick moved on to Haverling (Bath) Jr/Sr High School to become the junior high band director, a position he held until he retired in 1991. While there, he was a major contributor to the success of the Haverling Big Blue Marching Band alongside Luther Hoffman, Jim Meckley and Sam Watson. He was always thankful for the support and commitment of the students and their families, as well as the community, whose contributions were vital to the Big Blue’s impressive accomplishments.

Music was a huge part of Dick’s life. He was the director of the St. Mary’s Church choir for many years, was a member of the faculty at Bristol Hills Music Camp for close to two decades, played in countless pit orchestras for high school musicals and was the driving force in bringing famous Big Band orchestras to Haverling’s stage. He was a bass player for well over 50 years, most notably in the Carlton Dartt Trio, also known as the “Three of Us,” with Carlton and Ron Higgins. He was a founding member of the Southern Tier All Star Jazz Band in 1983, a 17 piece Big Band that is still together and playing gigs after almost 40 years.

Dick was an avid woodworker, making beautiful furniture, remodeling interior and exterior spaces, building toys for his grandchildren and anything else he or his family could imagine. He was definitely a perfectionist, going above and beyond in terms of detail. He was never finished until his work lived up to his precise standards.

Dick’s greatest love of all was his family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ele; their children, Richard L. (Deborah) Drain, Jr. of Hammondsport, Jennifer (Randy Carlberg) Drain of Bath, Amy (Erik) Weber of Livonia; their cherished grandchildren, Cameron and Colin Drain, Audrey and Adrienne Weber and Emmaleigh Carlberg; his brother William (Dolores) Drain of Geneseo, his nieces and nephews, cousins, caretakers and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters and their spouses, Betty (Corb) Webster, Shirley (Bill) VanDerMeid and Beverly (Bill) Deats; and his grand son, Austin Andrew Weber.

Friends are invited to call from 4:00 PM 7:00 PM on Friday, September 30, 2022, at Bond Davis Funeral Home, 107 East Steuben Street, Bath, NY. Dick’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service at 10:00 AM on October 1, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 32 East Morris Street, Bath, NY. A reception will follow. Private burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Geneva Street, Bath, New York.

Savona, NY: Harvey Homer Holmes (Homer), age 66, passed away on ursday, September 22, 2022 at the Bath V.A.M.C. He was born in Bath, NY March 4, 1956 to Audrey (Corbitt) Holmes and Francis Holmes. Harvey graduated from Savona High School, Class of 1975, and was on the wrestling team in high school. He was a US Navy Veteran. Harvey worked as a welder at Clark's Specialty in Bath, NY. He was an avid hunter and sherman and enjoyed riding horse back. He was a member, and the Sergeant at Arms at the Campbell American Legion Post 1279. Harvey loved spending time with his family, his dog Matty and being part of the community.

Homer was predeceaded by his parents and his brother, Alan Holmes as well as his stepfather, Robert Mills. He is survived by his daughters; Jennifer (Michael) Hargrave and Angela (Jason) Smith; grandchildren, Ethan, Damien, Grace, Owen, Natasha, Geo rey and Greggery, sisters, Teri (Spike) Winnie, Suzie (Rick) omas, Chris Lewis (Chris Wallace) and Kim Jessup; brothers, Francis (Melissa VanGelder) Holmes and Carl (Carol) Holmes and many nieces and nephews.
