Ronald William Salyer

Penn Yan, NY: Ronald William Salyer, 89, of Penn Yan, NY, died on Friday, September 1, 2023 at Geneva General Hospital. He was born on August 22, 1934 the son of the late Jack Salyer and Mary Pickup (Edsall).

On December 23, 1952, he married his wife Jane in Burdett, NY.

Ron was an accountant and control manager at GLF Agway for 33 years, retiring in 1990. For his second career, Ron worked for the United Methodist Church and helped form the United Methodist Frontier Foundation.

Ron was a member of the Blu Point United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the NHPA, where he pitched in many tournaments locally and nationally. Ron loved woodworking, making ornaments and various wood objects for friends, family and the church. He made many frames for Jane’s cross stitch pieces. ey made a very creative pair. He also helped run the Once Again Shoppe.

He is survived by his daughter, Robin DeSantis of Port Crane, NY; son, Dean (Kirsten) Salyer of Angelica, NY; step sisters, Judy (Chris) Pohl of Silver Springs, MD and Jacqueline (Glenn) Prescott of Lawrence, KS; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren; He was predeceased by his wife, Jane; son-in-law, James DeSantis; and by his aunt and uncle who raised him, Clarence and Ada Halford. A celebration of his life will be held at the convenience of his family. Burial will be in Seamans Cemetery in Savona, NY. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to Blu Point United Methodist Church, PO Box 134, Blu Point, NY 14478. PENN YAN, NY: Jane (Dean) Salyer, age 89, of Penn Yan, NY died at home on Sunday, August 27th, 2023.

Jane was born in Montour Falls, NY on August 10th, 1934, the daughter of the late Mary and Beattie Dean. She graduated high school and married Ronald Salyer on December 23rd, 1952 in Burdett, NY. She was the bookkeeper for Agway Home Center in Baldwinsville, NY for 20 years. Jane was an avid Quilter and had taught quilting for 10 years and enjoyed sewing and embroidery. She was a member of the Blu Point United Methodist Church, where she participated in many Bible Study Classes, was a member of their Women's Group and help with church dinners and making communion bread.

Jane is survived by her husband of 70 years, Ronald Salyer; daughter, Robin DeSantis (Jim) of Port Crane, NY; son, Dean Salyer (Kirsten) of Angelica, NY; ve grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Edna Lambert and Linda Wager.

• Make copies of insurance cards and other important documents

STEP TWO: BUILT A KIT

• Gather supplies that will last for several days after a disa ster for everyone living in your home. Don’t forget to consider the unique needs each person or pet may have in case you have to evacuate quickly. Update your kits and supplies based on recommendations from FEMA at Ready.gov

• Check your disaster supply kit and replace stored food and w ater every three months.

STEP THREE: PREPARE FOR DISASTERS

• Identify what types of disasters are most likely to happen i n your area and learn how to prepare.

• Locate safe places in your home for each type of disaster.

• Identify emergency evacuation routes. • Sign up for local and state emergency alert systems.

STEP FOUR: CREATE A FAMILY EMERGENCY PLAN

• Meet with your family to discuss disasters and what to do in each situation.

• Assign responsibilities to each family member and plan to wo rk together as a team.

• Create a family evacuation plan and identify a meeting place outside of the home.

• Show each family member how and where to shut off utilities (water, gas, and electric).

POW/MIA Recognition Day is commemorated on the third Friday of every September, a date that's not associated with any particular war. In 1979, Congress and the president passed resolutions making it official after the families of the more than 2,500 Vietnam War POW/MIAs pushed for full accountability.

During the first POW/MIA Recognition Day commemoration, a ceremony was held at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., while the 1st Tactical Squadron from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia flew the missing man formation. Most ceremonies since then have been held at the Pentagon, and many smaller observances have cropped up across the nation and around the world on military installations.

The point of POW/MIA Recognition Day is to ensure that American remembers to stand behind those who serve and to make sure we do everything we can to account for those who have never returned.
