Anna Marie Sherwood Anna Marie Sherwood

CAMPBELL, NY: Anna Marie Sherwood of Campbell, New York passed away on November 15th, 2022. Anna was born on March 6th, 1927 to Floyd and Ida (Havens) Austin, Sr. of Campbell, New York. She attended and graduated from Campbell Central School. Anna worked at Merchandise Mart in Campbell, at Newberry's in Corning, then as a secretary at GLF/Agway in Campbell. Anna attended Elmira School for Cosmetology, and opened her own beauty shop at her home, bringing joy and humor to her clients, until she retired at 65. Anna married Paul Wade Sherwood on July 3rd, 1948 at the Presbyterian Church in Campbell. ey had two children, Paula Ann Sherwood, born December 2nd, 1949 and Jackie W. Sherwood, born December 7th,1950, who died shortly following his birth. Anna was very patriotic and was a past president of the Robert N. Austin American Legion Auxiliary. Anna was a strong, ercely independent woman who was an inspiration to all who knew her. She had a big heart and would go to bat for everyone she loved. She was dedicated to her family and took time to travel to visit and see her great-grandchildren across the country for their concerts, graduations, performances, and other special events—or just to eat pickles. She also loved spending time with her brothers, sisters, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and their children making cookies, going on Halloween hunts, holding their babies, and more. She has le her family with many special memories that they hold in their hearts. Anna was a creative soul who enjoyed writing poetry as well as arts and cra s. She took oil and watercolor painting classes in her 60s and knit, crocheted, and loved to sew throughout her lifetime. She made delicious fudge, fruitcake, cookies and other treats, especially for Christmas. She enjoyed a nice glass of wine or a good winery tour and could really cut the rug at a wedding or family event. She also enjoyed shopping, looking at antique glass, and playing the lottery. Her favorite show to watch was the Lawrence Welk show, and she continued to enjoy reruns of it throughout her life. Anna was also a tough competitor in card and board games, always playing to win and laughing no matter the outcome.

When thinking about Anna, her family will always remember her sense of humor. Whether cracking people up at family events, putting on a funny costume, or just sharing a joke, laughing with those she loved was one of Anna’s favorite things. roughout her life, she passed her joys and love of laughter along to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was also known for her sense of adventure. In her younger years, she rode snowmobile, enjoyed bowling, swing dance, big band at outdoor concerts, and shows at the theater. She also enjoyed new adventures right into her 90s, visiting Mount Rushmore and the Badlands on a roadtrip and watching My Fair Lady in New York City, to name a few.

Anna is survived by her brothers David (Dorothy) Austin, William (Josephine) Austin, Douglas Austin, and Floyd Austin, Jr., sister-in-law Ellie Austin; daughter Paula (Peter) Andrews; granddaughter April (William) Malphurs; grandson Marcus (Felicia) Smith; great-grandchildren Shannon Rao, Erin Smith, Sophia Rao, Trey Smith, and Raenika Smith; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Anna’s life will be held at the VFW at 281 Baker Street in Corning, New York from 2:00PM to 4:00PM on Sunday June 4th. e family asks that you wear Anna’s favorite color, green, in her honor at this celebration. As requested by Anna, there will be no funeral service.

Elaine Howell Elaine Howell

SAVONA, NY: Elaine

Howell 60, of Savona passed unexpectedly on April 29, 2023. She was the daughter of Elwood T. Hilligus and Joyce Eaves, born on May 1, 1962 in the town of Urbana.

Her dedication to her work ethic had her in the bakery business for the majority of her 45+ working years. Elaine was the hardest working woman you’ve ever met. Starting with babysitting at the age of 13, followed by the old pizza shop in Hammondsport, where she grew up. She started at P&C Foods in 1980, and spent over 30 years at various locations and in many departments. Her favorite department was the bakery, where she had a deep love for her work and she spent the greater part of her career at P&C and nishing as the Bakery Manager at Tops Markets. During the early years of her professional career she worked full and part-time, all while being the best mother anyone could want and providing for her two children as a single mother.

Elaine loved to shop as much as she liked to keep busy. She frequented Mac’s Dairy Bar, Oak Hill and Dutch Kuntry, o en with family and friends and penny shopping at the local DG’s. Spending time with her family was always on her to-do list. Her love of family was a trait she possessed beginning in her childhood, always making sure everything and everyone was taken care of and thought about. Elaine had a deep a ection for animals, especially her furry son Kenseth, and grandpup Olive. Taking care of her “babies”, the hummingbirds, was her favorite time of year and she always watched for visiting cardinals. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Richard; her best friend and daughter Kaylie Nichols (Eric Zurlick); her sons, Kyle Nichols (Jennifer Catron), Kavan Howell (Taylor Dillon), and Tristan Howell; sisters, Carolyn Hilligus (Steve), Marcia Guiles, Deb DeCamp (Roger), Kari Adams (Todd) and Amy Farrand (Steve); brothers, Brian Hilligus (Mary), Richard Eaves (Lisa), Bruce Hilligus (Kelli), Gus Hilligus, and om Tebo (Mary); her mother and father-in-law, Peg and Tom Tebo; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Pam Turner. Mom was one of the best humans to grace everyone’s world as well as the best Mother, wife, sister, friend, cornhole champion and smack talker.

To know her was to love her. And in the words of her idol, Dolly Parton, “I Will Always Love You”.

Elaine was always helping those in need and paying it forward. She had a long time devotion and respect for animals and our country’s Veterans. In lieu of owers, donations in her name can be made to your local SPCA or Veteran related association.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 from 1:00PM to 6:00PM at White Tail Ridge Farm, 9311 West Road, Savona, New York.

e Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home, 35 Main Street, Hammondsport is honored to assist Elaine’s family with the arrangements.

Online condolences or remembrances of Elaine are welcome on the Facebook page of Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home or at www.bishopanddesanto.com

ANNUAL DRINKING WATER QUALITY REPORT FOR 2022

PRATTSBURGH WATER DISTRICT

PO Box 427, Prattsburgh, NY 14873 (Public Water Supply ID#5001217)

INTRODUCTION:

To comply with State regulations, Prattsburgh Water District, will be annually issuing a report describing the quality of your drinking water. The purpose of this report is to raise your understanding of drinking water and awareness of the need to protect our drinking water sources. Last year, your tap water met all State drinking water health standards. We are proud to report that our system did not violate a maximum contaminant level or any other water quality standard. This report provides an overview of last year’s water quality. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to State standards.

If you have any questions about this report or concerning your drinking water, please contact Chris Underhill, Water Maintenance, 607-522-3738. We want you to be informed about your drinking water. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled town board meetings. The meetings are held 3rd Monday of every month, 6:30PM at the Town Hall, except May and September when they are held in Ingleside

WHERE DOES OUR WATER COME FROM?

In general, the sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activities. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: microbial contaminants; inorganic contaminants; pesticides and herbicides; organic chemical contaminants; and radioactive contaminants. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the State and the EPA prescribe regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. The State Health Department’s and the FDA’s regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Our water system serves approximately 850 people through 270 service connections. Our water source is groundwater drawn from two 86-95 foot deep-drilled wells, which are located on County Route 75. The water is chlorinated and ltered for iron and manganese prior to distribution. The water is then pumped through the distribution system to a 400,000 gallon tank o Reservoir Road where it is gravity ow back to the service connections

A source water assessment summary will be included when the data is available from the NYS Department of Health.

ARE THERE CONTAMINANTS IN OUR DRINKING WATER?

As the State regulations require, we routinely test your drinking water for numerous contaminants. These contaminants include: total coliform, turbidity, inorganic compounds, nitrate, nitrite, lead and copper, volatile organic compounds, total trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, radiological and synthetic organic compounds. The table presented depicts which compounds were detected in your drinking water. The State allows us to test for some contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants do not change frequently. Some of our data, though representative, are more than one year old.

It should be noted that all drinking water, including bottled drinking water, may be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health e ects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) or the New York State Health Department at (607) 324-8371.

NOTES:

1. - The level presented represents the 90th percentile of the 10 sites tested. A percentile is a value on a scale of 100 that indicates the percent of a distribution that is equal to or below it. The 90th percentile is equal to or greater than 90% of the copper values detected at your water system. In this case, ten samples were collected at your water system and the 90th percentile value was 0.49 MG/L, highest value; and 0.32 MG/L was the second highest level. The action level for copper was not exceeded at any of the sites listed.

2. - The level presented represents the 90th percentile of the 10 sites tested. A percentile is a value on a scale of 100 that indicates the percent of a distribution that is equal to or below it. The 90th percentile is equal to or greater than 90% of the lead values detected at your water system. In this case, ten samples were collected at your water system and the 90th percentile value was 4.7 UG/L, highest value; and 3.3 UG/L was the second highest level. The action level for lead was not exceeded at any of the sites listed.

3. - This level represents the highest locational running annual average calculated from data collected.

DEFINITIONS:

Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible.

Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety.

Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL): The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants.

Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level Goal (MRDLG): The level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs do not re ect the bene ts of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contamination.

Action Level (AL): The concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements which a water system must follow.

Treatment Technique (TT): A required process intended to reduce the level of a contaminant in drinking water.

Non-Detects (ND): Laboratory analysis indicates that the constituent is not present.

Milligrams per liter (mg/l): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one million parts of liquid (parts per million - ppm).

Micrograms per liter (UG/L): Corresponds to one part of liquid in one billion parts of liquid (parts per billion - ppb).

WHAT DOES THIS INFORMATION MEAN?

As you can see by the table, our system had no violations. We have learned through our testing that some contaminants have been detected; however, these contaminants were detected below the level allowed by New York State. It should be noted that the action level for lead was not exceeded. We are required to present the following information on lead in drinking water: If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women, infants, and young children. It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than at other homes in the community as a result of materials used in your home’s plumbing Prattsburgh municipal Utilities is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by ushing your tap for 30 seconds to two minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791) or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

IS OUR WATER SYSTEM MEETING OTHER RULES THAT GOVERN OPERATIONS?

During 2022, our system was in compliance with applicable State drinking water operating, monitoring and reporting requirements. We are required to monitor your drinking water for speci c contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not your drinking water meets health standards. During 2020, we did not monitor or test for iron, manganese, and therefore cannot be sure of the quality of your drinking water during that time.

DO I NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS?

Although our drinking water met or exceeded state and federal regulations, some people may be more vulnerable to disease causing microorganisms or pathogens in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice from their health care provider about their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial pathogens are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

of drilling wastes; Discharge from metal refineries; Erosion/Natural Deposits

WHY SAVE WATER & HOW TO AVOID WASTING IT?

Although our system has an adequate amount of water to meet present and future demands, there are a number of reasons why it is important to conserve water:

• Saving water saves energy and some of the costs associated with both of these necessities of life;

• Saving water reduces the cost of energy required to pump

water and the need to construct costly new wells, pumping systems and water towers; and

• Saving water lessens the strain on the water system during a dry spell or drought, helping to avoid severe water use restrictions so that essential re ghting needs are met.

You can play a role in conserving water by becoming conscious of the amount of water your household is using, and by looking for ways to use less whenever you can. It is not hard to conserve water. Conservation tips include:

• Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle, regardless of how many dishes are loaded. So get a run for your money and load it to capacity.

• Turn o the tap when brushing your teeth.

• Check every faucet in your home for leaks. Just a slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day. Fix it and you can save almost 6,000 gallons per year.

• Check your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, watch for a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from one of these otherwise invisible toilet leaks. Fix it and you save more than 30,000 gallons a year.

CLOSING:

Thank you for allowing us to continue to provide your family with quality drinking water this year. In order to maintain a safe and dependable water supply we sometimes need to make improvements that will bene t all of our customers. The costs of these improvements may be re ected in the rate structure. Rate adjustments may be necessary in order to address these improvements. We ask that all our customers help us protect our water sources, which are the heart of our community. Please call our o ce if you have questions.

May, marked officially as Military Appreciation Month, is a special month for both those in and out of the military. Not only do we pause on Memorial Day to remember the sacrifice and service of those who gave all, but the month also holds several other military anniversaries and events, including Military Spouse Appreciation Day and Armed Forces day.

Join Military.com as we honor the service and sacrifice of members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, Space Force and National Guard as well as the contribution of their spouses.

Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to ensure the nation was given the chance to publicly show their appreciation for troops past and present.

WHAT IS MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH

Each year the president makes a proclamation, reminding Americans of the important role the U.S. Armed Forces have played in the history and development of our country. May was chosen because it has many individual days marked to note our military's achievements, including Loyalty Day, established in 1921, Victory in Europe (VE) Day commemorating the end of WWII in Europe in 1945, Children of Fallen Patriots Day and the anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden.

Military Appreciation Day

Many locations also celebrate a specific Military Appreciation Day. Although not a nationally recognized holiday, areas use the day to hold parties and picnics in honor of their local active duty, Guard, Reserve and military veteran communities. Local businesses may offer discounts, while local sports teams may give free entrance to military families and veterans.
