Raymond E. Dann September 7, 1935 - February 26, 2022

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Megan; I am the granddaughter of Ray. I am also the daughter of Diane, one of Ray’s two daughters, Jenny & Diane.

I wanted to take a moment to remember a great man. He always lifted us up with his signature smile. He was a class act and dressed the part, looking sharp with those black rimmed glasses. You didn’t even have to know him, to understand he was a warm and compassionate person. So incredibly kind and generous, he was always there to extend a hand to those in need (or maybe even a loan lol). He always said “Everything’s going to be okay” and when he said it, somehow you just knew it was true. He really just wanted everyone to be happy. And when you were around him, how could you not be. He was known for his lighthearted humor; maybe it was an old Halloween mask or silly glasses in the middle of July to put a smile on your face. Or even changing his voice and talking like Donald Duck (and trust me, it was a good impression). He gave the best advice. And he was a great listener. And perhaps it’s because, he was just someone you could just look up to...

• A devoted husband, married for 57 years. • He was a volunteer at the fire department.

• A business man (He worked two jobs, he ran the store for almost 60 years as well as delivering mail for the Post Office.

• He served in the Army (where he worked on and flew helicopters). • He built houses and sold cars.

• And he was a man of faith. The kind of faith that was just ever present and never overbearing.

It was unwavering and deeply rooted. ...To put it simply...you could always count on him.

FAMILY MAN:

My Grandpa was a loving husband and father. He stood by his wife Glenna for over 5 decades; they even shared the same birthday. They devoted their lives to each other, and had three children, followed by four grandchildren. We have fond memories of the social get-togethers for friends and family they used to have at the house, like nice parties and family holiday dinners. Christmas and Thanksgiving were especially enjoyable. Times like that will surely be missed.

THE STORE:

Let’s talk about the store, Ray Dann’s Trading Post. The place that he dedicated so much of his life to. Now we all know the store could be a little, how do you say it, cluttered? LOL. But that man could find anything that you could ever need and he could fix it too! He was a jack of all trades. My Grandpa was a collector of almost everything, but especially coins, cars, guns and tires. Yep, tires... so, so, so many tires. The family actually lived above the store for several years before moving to the house in Hammondsport. He also owned a number of properties in Tyrone. Years ago, he had a store cat named Morris who he loved. The whole family, including the grandkids, learned math by counting change back to customers, we counted cans, bagged ice, made copies of keys and learned how to stock shelves. Skills which we all still use today.

HEALTH:

Health was very important to my Grandpa. I remember he would eat oatmeal with blueberries every morning. He would go swimming in the lake at first light before working two jobs and my Aunt Jenny recalls joining him often. He was very interested in holistic health and was always reading books and teaching us about which herbs we should be taking. Personally, I always found that to be fascinating, so we made that the main topic of our conversations regularly.

NATURE LOVER:

Raymond LOVED nature. You could look up and point to any cloud and he could tell you the name of it. He adored the sky and reminded us that rainbows were a sign from God. He liked to spend time hunting and fishing and was so pleased whenever he got the chance to get out on a boat; even happier when he took a sea plane with his daughters over Keuka Lake a couple years ago. Many of you might not know this, but when there was fishing competitions over by the store, they would bring the fish in to him and he would weigh them because he had scales at the store big enough. And sometimes they would even have to put two scales together to measure the weight of fish that big! I know he loved to be a part of stuff like that!

FUN MEMORIES:

Now let’s remember some FUN MEMORIES. Like family trips to Darien Lake, his fishing trips to Florida, having a beer at the carnival on the Fourth Of July, he loved Halloween and handing out candy at the store, Ski Club with his kids (we even believe he learned to ski at 40!) and doing things like taking his daughter, Diane, out to watch scary movies with her date

All I can tell you is, he will surely be missed and that Tyrone just won’t be the same. And if I am being honest, I am not really sure if any of us will be 100%. But, I bet I know what he would tell us all, and it’s that “EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OKAY” and you know what, I believe him... and I hope you do too.

WE LOVE YOU GRANDPA! THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU TAUGHT US. PLEASE WATCH OVER US ALL. AND CONTINUE TO SEND SIGNS BECAUSE WE ARE ALL WATCHING FOR THEM.

PULTENEY – Junior C. Gibson, 92, of Pulteney, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on Friday (March 18, 2022).

Born in Pulteney, N.Y. on December 30, 1929, he was the son of the late Edward and Dorothy (Cole) Gibson.

A graduate of Prattsburgh Central Schools he was a lifelong resident of Pulteney.

On November 25, 1948, he married Geraldine Preston, at the home of her parents on Neils Creek Road in Avoca. They then proceeded to have two sons and two daughters.

Throughout the years he was employed as a farmer, with the Town of Pulteney Highway Department, the Steuben County Highway Department, and ultimately retiring from the N.Y. State Department of Transportation in 1991. After retiring he continued with his passion of being an owner-operator of his vineyard.

He was a former firefighter with the Pulteney Fire Department for 64 years, where he was honored with receiving the Fireman of the year award. He also was a member of the Masons.

His hobbies included bowling, mowing the lawn, casino trips, playing euchre, and his morning trips to Keuka Corners, in Branchport, to visit with the guys and staff.

His loving family include his four children, Edward, Terry, Vicki, and Sherri; three grandchildren Samantha, Chris, and Stephanie; four great-grandchildren Jacob, Parker, Dominique, and Hunter; one great-great-grandchild Layana; one sister-in-law, Elaine; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by both parents Edward and Dorothy; his loving wife Geraldine; grandson Donald Cole Howe; siblings Joyce Gibson, Joan Putnam, Janice McAllister, and Jerry Gibson.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Friday (March 25, 2022) at the Bishop & DeSanto (formerly LaMarche) Funeral Home, 35 Main St., Hammondsport where a funeral and committal service will be held Saturday (March 26, 2022) at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. David S. Barnard officiating.

A celebration of life will take place later.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Pulteney Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 33, Pulteney, N.Y. 14843 or the Humane Society of Yates County, P.O. Box 12, Penn Yann, N.Y. 14527. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.

The Bishop & DeSanto (formerly LaMarche) Funeral Home, 35 Main St., Hammondsport is honored to assist Junior's family with the arrangements.

TOWN OF WHEELER

The Town of Wheeler is asking for bids or quotes for Mowing and Cleanup of the Wheeler Town Hall grounds and Seven (7) Town owned Cemeteries.

Bidder must show proof of Liability Insurance and be bonded.

Bidder must furnish and maintain their own equipment and fuel.

The Town of Wheeler will not be responsible for any equipment damaged by objects while mowing.

Bidder must mow at least twice a month or when needed from April 2022 thru October 2022.

Town of Wheeler is not responsible for any damage caused by the mowing crew.

The Wheeler Town Board has the right to accept or reject any or all bids in the best interest of the Town.
