Justice Henry J. Scudder Justice Henry J.
BATH, NY: It is with profound sadness and deep loss that we share the news of the death on November 18, 2022 of Justice Henry J. Scudder. Born to Gilbert and Irene (Joint) Scudder on April 3, 1945.
Henry, known to most as Hank, graduated from Campbell Central School, Stetson University and the University of Tennessee School of Law. He began his legal career in Bath, NY with Pete Gledhill and proudly served as the 1st Assis tant District Attorney in Steuben County, which whetted his appetite for politics. In 1981 he was elected Surrogate’s Court Judge, and was assigned to preside over County Court, Family Court and Supreme Court until 1997 when he was elected as a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. In 1999 he was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Fourth Department, where he served until his retirement in 2017. It was his great honor to be appointed as the Presiding Justice of that Court; a position of great respon sibility that he performed with dedication and distinction for many years. At the time of his retirement, he had served on the bench for over 35 years and had devoted his career to the law for over 45 years.
He was a focused and dedicated lawyer and judge, but he also loved the game of golf, country music, Keuka Lake, the Yankees and the Boston Celtics. Following his retirement, he became a full time armchair athlete and remained an avid reader.
He was predeceased by his parents. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Barbara (Keefer) Scudder, his daughter Ashleigh (Michael) James, his granddaughter Lilliana, his sister Judy (Richard) McEntyre, niece Marin Casey, nephew Marske McEntyre and several cousins, friends, and colleagues in the legal community. He is also survived by his business partner, EW Beckman Jr. and his former law partner, John McCarthy, Esq.
The family received friends at the Bond Davis Funeral Home on Sunday, November 27 from 2-5 pm, and a Memorial Service was held at the First Presbyterian Church, 6 E. Morris St., Bath, on Monday, November 28 at 1:00. The family provided flowers. Memorial donations may still be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or the Finger Lakes SPCA, 72 Cameron St., Bath, NY 14810.
