SPRINGFIELD — More than 50 people, including the mayor, city and state officials, representatives from Helix Human Services and other supporters of children in crisis, gathered on the steps of City Hall the morning of April 9 to renew Springfield’s commitment to preventing and helping heal the effects of child abuse. In recognition of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the ceremony included a proclamation from the mayor and remarks by child abuse advocates, capped by the raising of the National Child Abuse Prevention Month flag over City Hall. The design on the flag, depicting children as blue silhouettes on a red background, shows a missing middle child representing those lost to violence. Mayor Domenic Sarno opened the ceremony by acknowledging the 160-year history of Helix — formerly the Children’s Study Home — and its tireless commitment to working with children and families in times of crisis. “All the dedicated individuals that work at Helix, you’re doing angel’s work,” Sarno said. “Your efforts help these young people, young children, be able to move forward in a positive fashion that they can and will succeed.” Reading from the proclamation, Sarno acknowledged the horrors of abuse and neglect and their effects on children, challenging child welfare professionals, law enforcement, businesses, families and the community to work together to better protect children from abuse. “I urge all our citizens to increase their participation in the efforts to prevent child abuse, thereby strengthening the communities
