WESTFIELD — The ownership of Cannabis Connection, the city’s first recreational cannabis dispensary, is being transferred to a West Newbury limited liability company, according to the state’s Cannabis Control Commission.

On July 9, the CCC approved the proposed change of ownership that was submitted in early April by its now-former owners, Thomas Keenan, Curtis Gezotis, Marc Lichwan, and Joseph Keenan, according to a letter sent to the city’s Community Development Department.

The ownership of Cannabis Connection will transfer to Westfield Connection LLC, which will “assume ownership and control of the license entity upon effectuation of the transaction,” according to the letter sent by Thomas Keenan to the city.

With the CCC’s approval, the ownership change can now proceed.

According to the CCC and Secretary of State William Galvin, the agent for Westfield Connection LLC is Ann Tohill of West Newbury, who doesn’t appear to have any prior experience in the cannabis industry.

She did not return a phone call asking for a comment as of press time.

The city’s community development director, Peter Miller, said the host agreement that Cannabis Connection signed with the city in 2018 will be transferred to Westfield Connection LLC and does not need to be renegotiated.

Haven co-owner: dispensary should be open in two months

SOUTHWICK — Cannabis retailer Haven is only weeks away from opening, nearly two years after it was chosen by the Select Board as one of two dispensaries allowed to operate in town.

“We can’t wait to get it open,” said Mark S. Dupuis, who coowns the business with Brian Kuchachick. The business will open in the former Family Dollar building at 681 College Hwy. “I’m getting like 20 calls a day from people wanting to know when we’re opening. People are really excited,” Dupuis said on July 27, standing outside the dispensary, as contractors worked inside the 8,300-squarefoot building.

Inside the building, the walls have been framed with metal studs, the electrical wiring has been run, and the sprinkler systems have been installed.

“The drywall should be installed by the end of the week,” Dupuis said.

with cannabis distributors and has hired Southwick resident Michele Hildebrandt as the store’s general manager.

“She’ll be a great fit for us. She has a fundamental understanding

of the business,” Dupuis said of Hildebrandt.

He also said that customers should be prepared for a new experience when shopping.

“I have a lot of events planned

that we’ll be offering. But, I’m not announcing them just yet,” he said.

Haven, which operates under the corporate name Responsible and Compliant Southwick LLC, was one of two retailers offered an opportunity to open in town in September 2024. The other is Pioneer Valley Trading Co. The retailer was approved for a provisional license by the CCC last July, before it applied for and was approved for a special permit by the Planning Board, and before it secured a building permit.

The facility’s building plans were submitted to the CCC for an architectural review; approval came in late December.

Because one of Haven’s principals is a verified social equity applicant, Dupuis said the CCC recently awarded it a $200,000 grant from the Cannabis Social Equity Trust Fund.

While the business has yet to secure a license to offer medical marijuana, he and Kuchachick are still planning to offer it to customers with state-issued medical marijuana cards.

In April, Gov. Maura Healey signed new legislation that restructured the CCC and eased restrictions on medical marijuana retailers, such as eliminating the requirement that medical marijuana businesses grow and process the cannabis they sell, according to the governor’s office.

About 4,000 square feet in the rear of the building will be used for manufacturing and white labeling, which is packaging products for other cultivators. Dupuis said that this expands the dispensary’s selection for its customers.

The space will also include a restricted area of about 1,900 square feet for a vault and the manager’s office.

The only change to the building’s exterior will be the addition of a side door on its south side.

Dupuis said Kuchachick recently became affiliated with a 100,000-square-foot grow operation, which will factor into the products Haven offers.

The business will operate under the California-based Haven, which has over a dozen retail operations in Southern California and has expanded into Maine and Maryland.

Dupuis, who has no connection to Mark A. Dupuis, the owner of the now-closed Heka dispensary in Westfield, and Kuchachick will rely on the knowledge the parent company has developed over the last decade while operating medical and retail cannabis dispensaries.

The parent company will also handle the administrative side of the business, taking care of tax payments, accounting and legal services. the ownership change, Westfield Connection LLC still has several steps it must take before being licensed, including providing the agency with written operations plans and undergoing a review by the agency of the business’s location.

Public asked to stay off athletic fields during construction

WESTFIELD — Superintendent Stefan Czaporowski and Mayor Michael McCabe are asking the public to stay off the new athletic fields at Westfield High School while they are still under construction.

Czaporowski said the city asked the school district to get the word out due to the increase in trespassing at the site. He said that some people have pushed through the fencing and gates to use the track, causing concern and even some confrontations between members of the public and the general contractor’s staff.

“What’s happening is people are going in there. It’s an active construction site, and I don’t want anybody getting hurt,” Czaporowski said.

A similar message was sent by McCabe’s office, asking the public to respect the No Trespassing signs. “Although construction is progressing, the project has not yet been completed or accepted by the City and Westfield Public

Schools. Until that time, the site remains under the control of the contractor and is closed to the public,” the city said.

“Unauthorized access to the construction site presents safety and liability concerns and may damage the playing surface or other project components before installation is complete,” the city continued. “The area is posted No Trespassing, and those restrictions remain in effect until the project has been officially completed and opened.”

Christopher Rogers, director of operations and safety for Westfield Public Schools, said, at this time, no teams, coaches, players, or community members are permitted on the field for the safety of everyone involved and the protection of the new playing surface and surrounding infrastructure.

“We know everyone is eager to get out on the new field, and we share that excitement. However, entering the site before the project is complete could delay construction, damage the new facility, or create unnecessary safe-

Artists and local authors sought for ARToberFEST 2026

WESTFIELD — On Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., downtown Westfield will be filled with fine art, literature, live music and community during ARToberFEST 2026.

In preparation for the event, the call for artists, authors and street performers is officially out. Bill Westerlind, president of ArtWorks Westfield, which runs ARToberFEST, said artists and authors wishing to participate in the juried show should submit their applications.

“All our shows are juried shows. There are tons of craft shows and vendor shows; we’re trying to distinguish ourselves as fine artists and local authors.

We are attracting fine artists from around New England to Westfield to be in our shows.

That’s the space we’re operating in,” he said.

Westerlind said ARToberFEST attracts artists from all over New England and New York, the Pioneer Valley, Vermont, Connecticut and Westfield.

“Every year we get responses from a greater number of Westfield artists we didn’t know were out there.” Last year, 21 Westfield-based artists participated

in the show.

The deadline to apply is Sept.

2, and artists are notified no later than Sept. 7. “They should not wait that late, but get their applications ASAP,” he said. Applications and more information about the show are available at artworkswestfield.com.

ARToberFEST has the capacity to host 75 to 80 fine artists, fine artisans and authors. As of July 28, 100 applications have already been received. Westerlind said that, as a juried show, total exhibitor applications often exceed capacity. Local authors make up 10-15% of the show.

“We encourage folks to get applications in quickly to go through the curation and jurying process. That’s how we pick out the best quality and a good mix of different mediums, which is what makes the show very attractive,” Westerlind said.

“Many times we are showing the same artists that have been in our shows every single time, but between 25 and 45% are new to us. We’re constantly attracting new people and different types of work that add diversity to the show. Part of the attraction of all our exhibitions is never the same old, same old; always a different mix,” he added.

western side of Elm Street, from Arnold Street up to the Westfield Athenaeum. This year, there will also be six or seven artists on the Church Street walkway in the 10by-10 spaces.

Westerlind said there would also be street musicians playing, some amplified and some acoustic. “We’re looking for different performers, such as jugglers, people on stilts and actors in costume. We’re trying to mix it up,” he said.

“We want the art or literature to be the main player, and others to complement what we’re doing with the art. The merchants love it; all these people coming downtown into their cafes and restaurants. Many of them say that one day is their highest revenue day per year.”

Westerlind said ArtWorks also reaches out to the other art and cultural organizations in town to participate. Westfield on Weekends usually has an art show in the WOW Center at 105 Elm St., and the Westfield Athenaeum hosts activities for kids or a presentation in the Lang Auditorium.

“ArtWorks is an art and cultural organization. We know the arts drive the local economy and attract visitors, tourists and guests into the city. ArtoberFest is one of the largest downtown attrac-

tions. So many people tell us they wait all year for ARToberFEST.” “It’s a big win for the city; we like to think of ourselves not just for events and community experiences, but a rising tide lifting all boats for the city of Westfield,”

Board approves contract to valuate business personal property

SOUTHWICK — Southwick is looking to generate additional tax revenue to offset the town’s ever-increasing operating costs and the annual regional district school allocation.

This effort comes after the Select Board approved a contract with an outside consultant to conduct a personal property valuation.

“It’s going to pay for itself,” said Randy Austin, the town director of assessment, about the $26,300 contract the board approved with Real Estate Research Consultants to conduct the valuation.

Personal property in the commonwealth is defined as movable physical items that are not permanently attached to land or a building. Key examples include business equipment, like office

chairs, computers and machinery, and furnishings inside a second home or vacation cottage.

Those items are taxable and, too often, Austin said, “doesn’t always get the attention it needs.”

When he was appointed as assessment director last September and began examining the valuations of real property, he found that some of the valuations needed to be adjusted, primarily because of incomplete information on property cards.

After turning his attention to personal property, Austin said he became “concerned.”

He discovered several businesses in town that had claimed to be exempt from personal property taxes but were not.

Austin said the unpaid amount for one of the businesses was only a few hundred dollars, but that it wasn’t “fair to the people who are paying.”

When the town was determin-

ing the terms of the tax-increment financing agreement with WGI Inc. before it was approved at May’s Town Meeting, Austin said he had discovered that some of the machinery in the current facility hadn’t been defined as personal property.

After the discovery, he had the valuation done and billed the manufacturing company for $33,000, which it promptly paid, he said.

Before Austin was appointed here, he was an assessor in Greenfield and said its department conducted an inventory of businesses in that city and found 90 that weren’t being billed for personal property.

“We found 90 new businesses and generated an additional $240,000 in revenue for the city,” he said.

Real Estate Research Consultants has been contracted to analyze the town’s current tax

data and identify businesses that may not have been paying taxes on personal property or declaring the property exempt.

An example of an exemption is household furnishings and effects.

Other exemptions include farming utensils like hand tools and simple mechanical devices, and “tools of the trade” of a mechanic, according to the state’s Division of Local Services.

However, tractors, combines, balers, and the like are not exempt. Furnishings and effects for owners of second homes are also not exempt, according to the DLS. RRC will also conduct comprehensive street canvassing and review lists of the town’s new business certificates, according to its contract.

The company expects to examine and evaluate 300 business accounts throughout town and

conduct a review and valuation of wireless and cable systems and an appraisal of public utility equipment, such as utility poles and the wires hung on them.

Austin said there are depreciation schedules that reduce taxes levied on equipment over a period of years.

However, while the equipment’s depreciation schedule might end with it at a zero value, Austin said that for personal property purposes, it never goes below 30%.

He said for years, utility companies would value their poles and other equipment at zero and request an exemption. That practice stopped after a 2002 lawsuit filed against a utility company resulted in a decision finding that its equipment could be taxed at its net book value instead of its fair market value.

RRC will have the revaluation completed during fiscal 2027.

Town seeks contract with new resident notification service

SOUTHWICK — Because the town’s current resident notification service CodeRED remains “problematic” after a cyberattack late last year, Fire Chief Richard Stefanowicz is recommending the town switch to a different service.

“It’s been problematic,” said Stefanowicz when describing CodeRED’s software at the Select Board’s recent meeting. “[CodeRED] was in the process of upgrading their platform, and, in the same time frame, they had a significant cyberattack that forced them to really pretty much close all the functions that they had and kind of come up with a quick solution. And unfortunate-

ly, the quick solution was not a good one,” he said.

Because of those ongoing issues, Stefanowicz said he began looking at other providers and settled on a company called GOGov. “GOGov has a lot of wonderful features. And one of the biggest things is they do have simple notifications like [what] we utilize now, often referred to as reverse 911,” he said.

He said one of the more attractive features of the service is that it creates an app specific to the town or city where it’s being used.

“They create the app for you, [so] you don’t have to do anything, and they take it from there,” Stefanowicz said.

Notifications to residents

can come through the app, but it can also be used for two-way communication.

“You can pay bills on it. You can track meetings, you can track the calendar in the town, and it interfaces with the [town’s] web pages. So, for both the town’s Fire Department, Police Department, and the websites. [It does] whatever you want to do … there’s even some social media stuff as well,” Stefanowicz said.

GOGov could be implemented within 30 days, he added.

However, there is one challenge, according to Stefanowicz.

The contract with CodeRED automatically renewed in July.

what the ramifications are of that, should we decide to move sooner than later. So, we still have to wait on that one,” he said.

After a question from Select Board member Russ Anderson about the difference in cost between GOGov and CodeRED, Stefanowicz said GOGov is initially a little more than the $4,800 annual cost, but after requesting a price comparable to the town’s current service, “it came in around the same price.”

Anderson and Select Board member Douglas Moglin asked about the data that CodeRED has collected from town residents since 2019, when it was initially rolled out.

“They don’t own it. It’s our list.

But we would still need to get that list from them,” Stefanowicz said.

That prompted Select Board member Joseph Deedy to ask if residents’ data collected by GOGov would be secure.

Moglin told Deedy that it was

a good question. “[We need] to know they’re not going to rent or sell that data …they should have a duty to protect,” Moglin said.

Town resident and Finance Committee member David Methe also questioned who would own the data collected.

“They possess the data,” Stefanowicz said. “That’s why we want to get clarification on what that really means. What I think that means is they protect the data ... but I will get that in writing from them.”

The board held off on a final decision until they find out what GOGov does with the data.

According to its website, it does not share, sell or trade personal information with outside parties.

“Your information is securely stored and accessible only to authorized personnel within our company,” according to the GOGov website.

A rain date is set for Aug. 28 if any of the shows get rained out. “Last year, what we did is the band that was rained out couldn’t make it, so we will schedule another band,” he said.

“Everything we do is free to the community. There are no suggested donations, no ticket sales; we don’t pass the hat. We have a great bundle of sponsors,” Westerlind said. “Regardless, philosophically, we never wanted to set up a barrier to people enjoying the arts. We don’t want to shut people out.”

Families flock to Urban Wildlife Rehab’s 25th anniversary

WESTFIELD — A love of animals brought together 250 visitors, vendors and volunteers to the Summer Family Fun celebrating the 25th anniversary of Urban Wildlife Rehabilitation on June 26 in Stanley Park.

Tickets were sold out before the event, which showcased the work of area wildlife rehabilitators and organizations, according to Kathy Gaynor, president of UWR. During the event, several area organizations gave educational presentations from the stage of the Annex Pavillion at the park to the delight of the many children and adults present.

Emily Bouwer, director of animal care and Savannah Marcotte, director of learning and community outreach from Forest Park Zoo’s Wildlife on Wheels brought some of their animals with them, including Noel the

groundhog, Clover the opossum, Acorn the box turtle and Dottie the skunk. They said the Forest Park Zoo has transitioned to showcasing native animals who have been injured in the wild.

Marcotte said Noel is not a normal groundhog. Rehabbed by Gaynor, he was donated to the zoo after being diagnosed with a brain injury that left him off balance, but still friendly and not shy about eating -- his favorite activity. Gaynor said Noel is a great ambassador for the zoo.

Dottie the skunk was briefly someone’s pet, and too friendly to release into the wild. Her scent glands were removed, so she is not able to spray. Marcotte said skunks can live 8 to 12 years. She said at the zoo they give the animals a lot of love and attention as well as enrichment to keep them stimulated with puzzles and scents.

Bouwer told the attentive group seated at the stage that their box turtle Acorn is still a

baby at four years old, because the turtles can live up to 100 years. She said they are omnivores, eating lettuce, fruit and veges, leaves and worms.

Clover, the opossum at 1 ½ years has already outlived a possum’s normal life span of one year in the wild. Also omnivores, possums will eat anything including mice, bird eggs as well as fruit and vegetables. Marcotte said people are scared of possums due to a fear of rabies, but in reality their body temperatures are too low to carry rabies.

“They are more scared of us than we are of them,” she said.

After introducing the animals, the children were invited to come up quietly and meet them in person. Also presenting on the stage were Family Jungle Exotics and Berkshire County Turtle Rescue.

I started volunteering at Urban Wildlife Rehab, and just passed state exams to become a wildlife rehabilitator,” she said. Her plan is to rehab porcupines under the name Rise and Shine Porcupine.

Colapinto runs the online store Berkshires Boutique at berkshiresboutique.com where she sells Urban Wildlife t-shirts and other materials to benefit the organization. She also recently redesigned the UWR website.

Ray Palmer of “Ray of Amherst Makes Stuff” gives snake talks at nature centers, libraries and senior centers with her ambassador snakes -- Naga the corn snake, Inky the king snake and garter snakes Garrett and Gunther. She sells beaded bracelets in snake patterns on her website at roams.biz. Her ultimate goal is to become a wildlife rehabilitator, she said.

Tina Perreault started Mason’s Mission in 2019. Named after her dog Mason, she spreads awareness of the needs and welfare of animals, and helps area non-profit rescues by hosting events, the biggest of which is Christmas with Kane’s.

Nicoll Vincent owns For K-9’s and Felines, a grooming and natural pet food store for dogs and cats, which moved to 6 Coleman Ave. in Westfield a year ago.

Vincent said she is celebrating 21 years in business this July.

painted animals and other designs on children’s faces. Whip City Wildlife Sanctuary provided volunteers to run children’s games under a tent, and Saucy Mama provided food throughout the event.

The event also honored Dee Howe, who founded Urban Wildlife Rehabilitation in 2001 with the mission to provide compassionate care for injured, orphaned, and displaced wildlife while educating the public about peacefully coexisting with the wild neighbors around us.

“Dee was more than a wildlife rehabilitator. She was a fierce advocate for animals, a trusted mentor, and someone who inspired others through both her knowledge and her kindness,” Gaynor said.

Proceeds from the Summer Family Fun Event will benefit Urban Wildlife Rehabilitation Inc., a nonprofit that provides medical care, food, and shelter to injured, ill, and orphaned wildlife across Massachusetts until they are healthy enough to return to the wild.

UWR specializes in rehabilitating small mammals such as raccoons, squirrels, foxes, muskrats, opossums, skunks, and porcupines, and has locations in Springfield, Russell, Southwick, Monson and Westfield. For more information, go to urbanwildliferehab.org.

Easthampton resident writes book in honor of late son

EASTHAMPTON — The loss of his son from a chronic illness inspired an Easthampton man to find the beauty in the pain and put it into writing.

Easthampton resident Gary Nadeau wrote “I Love You Mostest” to highlight his son’s optimistic and mindful attitude, and hopefully give inspiration to others dealing with or grieving over similar experiences.

The memoir explores the bond between Nadeau and his son Brad as they confronted the challenges of “chronic illness, shattered dreams and unimaginable loss,” according to the book’s synopsis.

“My son went through a lot of health experiences, that’s what’s spelled out in the book, and as a young man at a very young age, he seemed to develop a really healthy sense of resilience and emotional intelligence,” said Nadeau. “Brad quite often would sit there and say, ‘you know what, I’m only here for a short time, so I’m making the best of it.’ He knew that he had a choice to make. He could be woe is me about it, or he could accept the way it is and that he’d live his life to the fullest every moment he could. And I believe because he chose that, that’s what gave him that charismatic personality that drew people in.”

Brad died in 2022 from chronic atrial and intestinal dysrhythmia at 25 years old. From a young age, he dealt with health struggles, but Nadeau said he somehow stayed consistently optimistic through it all. This special trait in Brad needed to be shared with the world, Nadeau thought.

“At the time, my son was somewhere around 20 years old, and I mentioned to him would you be willing to write a book together? He a lot of times would say, ‘We should do a podcast dad.

A lot of people could learn from the things we discuss and how we talk about stuff.’ Because Brad and I would talk a lot about philosophical, deep things and why people do what they do and how people react to things the way they react to, even though I myself struggle with emotional intelligence sometimes and am very reactionary,” Nadeau said, “That’s kind of one of the paths in the book, I actually learned a lot from my son.”

Aside from highlighting Brad’s resilience, Nadeau said that the book aims to be a guide for all who want to find light in the face of adversity. He said readers will discover valuable lessons about living in the present moment, embracing acceptance, and stubbornly holding onto hope, even when darkness seems overwhelming.

“This story may resonate strongly with families dealing with stress, caregiving, grief, and mental and emotional cop-

ing. I firmly believe this book will make a difference,” said Nadeau. “I promised him a legacy, and that’s when I really said I’m going to sit down and write a book about this.”

Nadeau explained that at 5 years old, Brad suffered a stroke and eventually was in and out of the hospital as doctors tried to identify the cause at hand.

Initially, doctors concluded that Brad was suffering from restrictive cardiomyopathy, and he was given a pacemaker because the illness causes stiffness to the heart. But years later, doctors ultimately found that Brad was suffering from a rare genetic disorder called chronic gastral and intestinal dysrhythmia.

The disorder affects the heart and the digestive system and impairs the rhythmic muscle contractions that propel food through the intestines, causing a digestive condition called intestinal pseudo-obstruction. The heart and digestive issues develop at the same time, usually by age 20. Eventually, the illness spread to impact Brad’s lungs before his passing.

“His stomach and intestine basically started to stiffen and stopped processing food and stopped working. So, he lost a lot of weight, ended up with constant chronic pain,” explained Nadeau.

The illness meant Brad needed to use parenteral nutrition, a medical treatment that delivers liquid nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream through an IV. While he could technically still eat on occasion, the use of parenteral nutrition became the main source of daily nutrition for Brad.

“Even though Brad had this situation where he’s told, ‘hey, you can’t eat for the rest of your life,’ he was still the type of person, if he came into a room with a group of people, you’d want to meet him because his personality was just so very strong, positive, upbeat,” said Nadeau. “He was a caring person. He wanted to help people. He wanted to care for people, and he just exuded that.

People just got to know him.

He was just a really charismatic young man, and even though he suffered more in his short life than most people I’ve ever known, he was still the happiest, most positive, upbeat guy you could ever meet.”

That sentiment on Brad’s life and experience is what eventually inspired Nadeau to write a book about his and his son’s experience living with the illness.

After Nadeau shared stories with family, friends, and community members in passing, many came to the same conclusion: he needed to share this story of resilience with the world.

Nadeau said he was amazed at his son’s resilience and ability to stay positive through episodes.

After one episode mentioned in the book, Brad told his father

how he was able to stay grounded through it all and still have a positive outlook on life.

“He said, ‘Actually, you taught me that dad. One of those times we were talking about stuff and you talked to me about learning about impermanence and what it’s about, and that one of the reasons that people suffer is because we don’t realize things are impermanent and we hang on to things that we want to keep which keeps us tight and we’re greedy we want to hold onto these things, so if we lose them then we suffer,’” Nadeau said.

Nadeau said Brad’s maturity and mindfulness throughout his struggles were always inspiring.

Through philosophical discussions with his son, Nadeau began learning more about himself as a father, an experience the book also addresses.

“I was still doing what I needed to do, but internally burying the anger that I had over the hand that life dealt my family, and in the second half of the book, I talk about how I developed a mindfulness practice and how that mindfulness practice helped me to deal with things better, the discussions that I would have with Bradley,” said Nadeau.

“I’m still to this day trying to work that mindset into my life to be able to use it on a regular basis. Because we talked about this stuff and he actually modeled it and showed it right in front of me, he kept it present for me.

He made it easier for me to stay present and be more mindful.”

As of press time, the book has over 50 five-star reviews on Amazon since it was published in April, indicating to Nadeau that people are resonating with the memoir. Nadeau said that the positive response confirms that writing this book was a worthwhile endeavor.

“My son, in the last few years of his life, all he ever wanted to do [was] help people. He went to Framingham State University because he wanted to become a dietitian, and his goal was to work at Boston Children’s Hospital to help individuals that were on PN [parental nutrition] like him, and because he understood that experience and thought he’d be a great asset to that kind of thing,” said Nadeau. “His story and the life that he lived was just monumental. It’s so special that people need to know about it because it will help them deal with a variety of things.”
